How We Remember, Honouring Heros: International Fire Fighters' Day 2024

As the world gears up to commemorate International Fire Fighters' Day on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, it's a poignant moment to reflect on the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of firefighters worldwide. This day serves as a reminder of the crucial role these courageous men and women play in keeping our communities safe, often risking their own lives in the line of duty. The history of International Fire Fighters' Day traces back to a tragic incident that occurred on December 2, 1998, in Linton, Australia. On that fateful day, a group of firefighters from the Geelong West Fire Brigade set out to refill their tanker with water. However, fate had a cruel twist in store for them. A sudden and violent wind change engulfed their truck in flames, claiming the lives of five brave souls: Garry Vredeveldt, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong. The devastating loss of these firefighters shook not only their local community but also resonated deeply with people around the globe. In the aftermath of this tragedy, the idea of International Fire Fighters' Day was born, as a way to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the line of duty and to express gratitude to firefighters everywhere for their selfless service. Since its inception, International Fire Fighters' Day has become an annual event observed by countries worldwide. It serves as an opportunity for communities to come together and show appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of firefighters. From organizing parades and memorial services to conducting fire safety workshops and fundraisers, various activities are held to commemorate this day and raise awareness about the challenges faced by firefighters. The significance of International Fire Fighters' Day goes beyond mere recognition; it also highlights the need for ongoing support and resources to ensure the safety and well-being of firefighters. These brave individuals confront numerous hazards and challenges daily, from battling blazing infernos and rescuing trapped civilians to providing emergency medical assistance in times of crisis. Their job demands not only physical strength and courage but also mental resilience and unwavering commitment. In recent years, the role of firefighters has become even more critical in the face of escalating natural disasters, such as wildfires, hurricanes, and floods, exacerbated by climate change. Firefighters often find themselves on the front lines, risking their lives to protect lives, property, and the environment from the ravages of these disasters. As we mark International Fire Fighters' Day in 2024, let us take a moment to honor the legacy of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to express our gratitude to all firefighters who continue to serve with courage, dedication, and valor. Their unwavering commitment to duty exemplifies the highest ideals of heroism and inspires us to work towards building safer and more resilient communities for all. Gaza war: Rafah incursion would put hundreds of thousands of lives at risk, says UN aid agency

The United Nations humanitarian aid agency says hundreds of thousands of people would be at imminent risk of death if Israel carries out a military assault in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The city has become critical for humanitarian aid and is highly concentrated with displaced Palestinians. Leaders internationally have urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be cautious about any incursion into Rafah , where seven people mostly children were killed overnight in an Israeli airstrike. On Thursday, United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said any U.S. response to such an incursion would be up to President Joe Biden, but that currently, conditions are not favorable to any kind of operation. Turkey's trade minister said Friday that its new trade ban on Israel was in response to the deterioration and aggravation of the situation in Rafah. The Israel-Hamas war has driven around 80% of Gazas population of 2.3 million from their homes, caused vast destruction in several towns and cities, and pushed northern Gazato the brink of famine. The death toll in Gaza has soared to more than 34,500 people, according to local health officials, and the territorys entire population has been driven into a humanitarian catastrophe. Netanyahu vows to invade Rafah 'with or without a deal' as cease-fire talks with Hamas continue The war began Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked southern Israel, abducting about 250 people and killing around 1,200, mostly civilians. Israel says militantsstill hold around 100 hostagesand the remains of more than 30 others. Dozens of people demonstrated Thursday night outside Israels military headquarters in Tel Aviv, demanding a deal to release the hostages. Meanwhile,Hamassaid it would send a delegation to Cairo as soon as possible tokeep working on cease-fire talks. A leaked truce proposalhints at compromises by both sidesafter months of talks languishing in a stalemate. Across the United States, tent encampments and demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war havespread across university campuses. More than 2,000 protesters have been arrested over the past two weeks as students rally against the wars death toll andcall for universities to separate themselvesfrom any companies that are advancing Israels military efforts in Gaza. Where have all the wine bargains gone? | Fiona Beckett on drink

Value for money is harder to find these days, but here are a few pointers While we all hunker down in the winter, these warmer days and lighter nights are an invitation to be more sociable, and to just drop in on family and friends, outstay our welcome and drink all their wine. Which used to be OK(ish) when a decent bottle of wine cost between 5 and 10, but is less acceptable now when, unless its on special offer, it will more often than not set you back more than 10. Nowadays, Im constantly doing double takes when I check the price of a wine Ive tried within recent memory and find that the price has increased by at least 25%. Tescos own-label red vermouth , for example, was 5.75 just over 18 months ago, and now its 8 which is still reasonable, but its hard to see why its shot up so much. Shrubs offer resilience and reliability: here are 10 that will thrive in your garden

As climate change brings volatile weather patterns, the shrub too often ignored in favour of fashionable perennials is making a comeback Somewhere along the line we have lost sight of the humble shrub. Its downfall could be in part attributed to our continuing love for prairie planting , which subverted the quaint cottage garden with its weighty perennials, swaying grasses, and broad brushstrokes of ribboned colour. Against such seasonal vibrancy purple salvia, beaming echinacea and tall persicaria stiff and woody viburnums, weigelas and hydrangeas came to feel decidedly pedestrian, the stuff of municipal car parks and stale suburbia. In appealing to this shift in tastes, many contemporary garden designers doubled down on herbaceous planting schemes, and our confidence in and, seemingly, knowledge of valuable ornamental shrubs began to wane. But under increasingly volatile weather patterns, our gardens are in desperate need of more dependable, deeper-rooted plant material, and the shrub with its robust longevity is ready for a rebrand. Whenever a free-kick or corner is awarded, managers are joined by another figure who wildly gesticulates and shouts instructions at his teams players for a few seconds before taking his seat again in the dugout. Thanks largely to the exploits of Arsenals Nicolas Jover, the set-piece coachs stock has never been higher. China Successfully Launches Lunar Probe Mission to Collect Samples from Far Side of Moon

China has marked a significant milestone in space exploration by launching a 53-day mission to collect samples from the far side of the moon. The Chang'e-6 mission, spearheaded by the China National Space Administration (CNSA), aims to gather valuable data for scientific research. This groundbreaking mission represents the first-ever attempt to retrieve samples from the unexplored far side of the moon. The Chang'e-6 probe, comprising an orbiter, a lander, an ascender, and a re-entry module, embarked on its journey aboard a Long March-5 Y8 rocket from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in China's Hainan province. The far side of the moon, which remains hidden from Earth's view, holds immense potential for scientific exploration. One hour after liftoff, officials confirmed the success of the launch, heralding a new era in lunar exploration. Key objectives of the mission include the collection of lunar dust and rocks, which will be transported back to Earth for detailed analysis. The ascender will play a crucial role in ferrying the samples to the lunar orbiter before they are transferred to the re-entry module for the journey home. The CNSA has emphasized the mission's focus on advancing key technologies, including automatic sample collection and ascent from the far side of the moon. Additionally, scientific instruments from France, Italy, and the European Space Agency/Sweden, as well as a Pakistani payload, will accompany the Chang'e-6 mission. Notably, this marks the first instance of China collaborating with Pakistan, its all-weather ally, in a lunar exploration mission. Pakistan's Institute of Space Technology has contributed the ICUBE-Q orbiter, equipped with two optical cameras for imaging the lunar surface. Named after the Chinese moon goddess Chang'e, the lunar exploration program underscores China's ambition to establish a presence beyond Earth. Building upon the success of previous missions, such as Chang'e 5, which retrieved samples from the moon's near side, China aims to establish a lunar station and conduct manned missions by 2030. China's strides in space exploration position it as a major player in the global arena, alongside achievements such as landing a rover on Mars and establishing a functional space station. With India's recent feat of landing near the lunar south pole with its Chandrayaan-3 mission, the race for lunar exploration continues to intensify, promising exciting discoveries and advancements in the realm of space science. Did we really expect Tory MPs who fought for voter ID rules to follow them? Dont be ridiculous | Marina Hyde

We seem to have reached the stage where Sunaks MPs seek empathy for their inability to comply with their own policies Are you, like me, struggling to get a handle on the current governments approach to empathy? It increasingly seems to be a commodity that many Conservative MPs believe should be available to Conservative MPs only. A few weeks ago the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, described William Wragg fellow Tory MP and then-chair of the public administration and constitutional affairs committee as courageous. By way of a reminder, courageous is the sort of word we would typically reserve for people whove singlehandedly held a bridge for the Allies against the Germans despite being wounded/posted a picture on social media of themselves without makeup; whereas Mr Wragg had simply shared MPs private phone numbers with a blackmailer in the current security environment. Is that brave? If it is, can the no-makeup girls please get a VC? Further bravery seems to have been on show during yesterdays local elections, which took place under electoral law changed by the Tories in 2022 . All voters are now required to present an approved form of photo ID, which even Jacob Rees-Mogg last year implied was an attempt to gerrymander and upset a system that worked perfectly well. Flash-forward to the eve of this weeks polls, and the Ipswich MP Tom Hunt who, naturally, voted in favour of voter ID could be found informing a WhatsApp group of local party members that it turns out I have no appropriate ID to vote tomorrow, and requesting someone to do the honours and assist him in getting an emergency proxy vote. Unclear which lucky local did the honours, but Ipswich Labour used a screenshot of his APB in their own ad to remind people that they need voter ID, warning: Dont be like Tom . Sri Lanka container volumes rise near 50 per cent

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has reported a record 48 per cent year-on-year (YoY) rise in container volumes in the first quarter (Q1 2024). The total grew from 441,032 to 652,766 TEU. SLPA ascribed this spike to a number of issues, including the Red Sea crisis and its broader ramifications. SLPAs transshipment throughput in the first three months of this year totalled 582,403 TEU, a 49.81 per cent increase over the same period last year. This growth contributed to the Port of Colombos (POC) overall transshipment volume, which reached 1.72 million TEU in the first three months of this year, a 24.20 per cent increase over the same period in 2023. Keith Bernard, Chairman of the SLPA, emphasised that the port is ready to become a vital transshipment hub for the Middle East, as many shipping lines reroute boats to avoid current concerns in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. SLPA staff and workers have handled this situation diligently and efficiently, in the face of challenges, he said. SLPA and the POC have effectively managed the situation which has resulted in a significant increase in throughput. The POC experienced a substantial surge in volumes, reaching 2 million TEU, a notable increase of 24 per cent. Furthermore, the completion of the East Container Terminal (ECT) Stage II and the acquisition of new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes will further enhance POCs position as a leading shipping hub in the region. The new cranes will enable the port to handle ultra-large GMX 24 ships, allowing it to accommodate higher volumes in the future. Additionally, ongoing infrastructure developments by SLPA will further strengthen the POCs competitiveness in attracting more volume and enhancing its capabilities in handling larger vessels. But kafkaesque does not come close to describing the life of the man who lent the term his name, according to an irreverent biopic of the Prague-born author. Continue reading...
