California boat captain gets prison term for fire deaths of 34 people

California boat captain gets prison term for fire deaths of 34 people The captain of a dive boat that caught fire and sank off the California coast in 2019, killing 34 people in one of the state's deadliest maritime disasters, was sentenced on Thursday to four years in prison for his conviction on a federal charge of seaman's manslaughter. Jerry Boylan was found guilty by a U.S. District Court jury in November on a single count of misconduct or neglect of a ship officer under a federal homicide statute dating from steamboat accidents of the early 1800s. The felony conviction, capping a 10-day trial, had carried a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, according to Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles. Boylan was captain of the 75-foot dive boat Conception when the vessel went up in flames in the early morning hours of Sept. 2, 2019, while anchored in Platt's Harbor near Santa Cruz Island, off the Santa Barbara coast, during a sport diving trip.

Covid-19: New variant of Corona 'FLiRT' surfaced, scientists said - even people who have taken booster dose are not safe

The ongoing global Corona epidemic has still not stopped. Recent reports suggest that the virus has once again undergone mutation due to which a new set of variants is being seen. The sub-variant generated due to mutation in the coronavirus has been named 'FLiRT'. Researchers said that this new variant also belongs to the Omicron family. It is believed to be a form of the JN.1 variant, due to which cases of infection were seen increasing rapidly in many countries last year. According to American media reports, this new variant of Corona has been found in wastewater monitoring. Data scientist J. In the model released last week, Weiland had again advised people to be alert regarding coronavirus infection. The team of scientists said that some such mutations have been seen in this new variant of Corona which can cause great concern. In summer, there may be a possibility of an increase in coronavirus cases due to new variants in many countries including America. Changes seen in the spike protein of the virus Dr. Megan L., Dean at Yale School of Public Health in America. Rainie says changes have been seen in the spike protein of the new variant of Corona 'Filirt' which makes it capable of easily infecting people by dodging the body's immune system. Experts have expressed concern that only 22% of American adults have received the latest COVID-19 vaccine, and for many people, it has been a long time since they were last infected with the virus, so the body's defense system against the virus is also weakened. Is. In such a situation, the risk of infection with the new variant and its serious form may also be higher. Even people who have taken booster doses are not safe Dr. Thomas.A., an infectious disease expert at the University of Buffalo. Rousseau says, that not only in America, there is a high population of people with weak immunity all over the world. In such a situation, if another wave comes due to some new variant of Corona, then it can increase our sensitivity. There is also data showing that even people who have received the latest Covid booster dose cannot be considered completely protected against a potential surge. Every time a new mutation is seen in the variant, the risks of infection may increase further. A preprint study released this week by Harvard University researchers on the vaccine and its efficacy offers strong evidence that even the latest booster shots may not fully protect against JN.1 and its sub-variants. . It is noteworthy that JN.1 variants had spread globally during winter and this variant is still considered to be the main reason for 95% of Covid-19 cases in the US. In the US alone, this variant reported a 21% increase in infection cases in December and 85% by the third week of January. Vaccination is the best way to protect against coronavirus Looking at the potential dangers of corona, scientists said that even though there are many questions about whether those who take booster shots are not completely protected from corona, vaccination is still the best way to avoid the threat of corona. For those who have not received the latest booster, especially those who are above 65 years of age or have weak immunity, a booster shot of corona becomes necessary. Scientists say, considering that the virus is constantly evolving and our immunity is also weakening, an annual booster dose should also be recommended for safety. (PC: ISTOCK)

People of Jharkhand seething in anger, will throw out BJP looting its mineral resources: Kalpana Soren

JHARKHAND: Kalpana Soren, wife of former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, on Thursday said that the people of Jharkhand are seething in anger against the BJP government and will throw out this tyrannical force which is looting its rich mineral resources. In an exclusive interview with PTI, Kalpana said her husband's arrest was unexpected and it triggered a shock in the JMM and the family. She said it is not in the DNA of tribals to bow and Hemant Soren would emerge stronger. We have full faith in the judiciary and we are waiting for Hemant to come out on bail and campaign for the Lok Sabha polls. He is innocent and has been trapped in a pre-planned conspiracy by the BJP-led government at the Centre, she said. Kalpana, who has emerged as a new face of the party, termed the BJP a tyrannical force that is allegedly hell-bent to oppress the opposition. How will the Constitution be saved when you are arresting opposition leaders who are working for the poor, tribals and dalits. They (BJP) only tell lies. The saffron party's 400+ slogan has pushed the temperature here above 400 degrees, she added. On her husband languishing in jail for over 90 days, Kalpana said, I have a question as to why all Enforcement Directorate (ED) action takes place only in opposition-ruled states. Jailed ex-Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren be freed soon after defeating tyrannical forces: Kalpana On the alleged rift in the family, Kalpana said, There is full unity. Hemant Ji's brother was there during my nomination for Gandey bypoll on April 29. On her sister-in-law Sita Soren quitting the party, Kalpana said, It was her decision to part ways with JMM and my best wishes are always with her. Kalpana, 48, who is credited with infusing a new vigour into Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) rank and file after Soren's arrest earlier this year, said politics has never been her choice but circumstances thrust her into it. I will fight against injustice and dictatorial forces as bowing is not in tribal DNA. I will follow my husband's footsteps. He chose to court imprisonment rather than compromise his values. I am his better-half and will see to it that tyrannical forces get a befitting reply, Kalpana said. My husband's arrest by the ED was politically motivated and part of a plan to coerce him to join the BJP. His arrest is part of a plan by the central government to browbeat, intimidate and humiliate him but they will get a befitting reply in the elections, she said. Kalpana filed her nomination as the JMM candidate for Gandey assembly bypoll on April 29. Voting for the seat is scheduled on May 20 along with the parliamentary elections in the state. The seat in Giridih district fell vacant following the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad. Kalpana Soren files nomination as JMM candidate from Gandey assembly seat Kalpana, a homemaker with MTech and MBA qualifications, completed her school education from Baripada in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, and obtained her engineering and MBA degrees in Bhubaneswar. Her political journey began at the 51st foundation day celebration of the JMM here on March 4, when she claimed that a conspiracy had been orchestrated by her opponents ever since the Hemant Soren-led coalition government came to power in 2019. Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam on January 31. Speculations regarding Kalpana's candidacy arose following the resignation of Ahmad in December, with the BJP claiming it was to facilitate her candidature in case the ED issued summonses to her husband. Hemant Soren had, however, then dismissed rumours of Kalpana contesting from Gandey, calling it BJP's fabrication.

Nearly 3,000 people are languishing in jail unfairly. We must set them free

There is consensus in parliament that indeterminate sentences are unjust. So why is the government dragging its heels? Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) is chair of the justice select committee Last year I tried to lay to rest a ghost that has haunted four successive governments: the fate of those still in prison under imprisonment for public protection (IPP) sentences. The sentences, now widely acknowledged as both wrong in principle and unworkable in practice, were described by the former supreme court justice Lord Brown as the greatest single stain on our criminal justice system and by David Blunkett as the biggest regret of his time in government . Yet, as I quickly found out, there is still a lack of political will to end this injustice and neither the government nor the opposition supported my amendment to the victims and prisoners bill. IPP sentences were introduced in 2003 as a new form of custodial sentence. Designed to appear tough on crime, they were indeterminate sentences that could be given to offenders who had committed violent or sexual offences and were deemed to pose a significant risk of causing harm to the public. Unlike a normal sentence, those given an IPP sentence would have to serve a minimum tariff in prison before being detained for an indefinite period until they could prove to the Parole Board that they were no longer a risk. Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) is the member of parliament for Bromley and Chislehurst and a former local government minister. He is currently chair of the justice select committee Continue reading...

Porbandar: In footsteps of Mahatma, Mandaviya bets on padyatras to draw people's support

Porbandar: In footsteps of Mahatma, Mandaviya bets on padyatras to draw people's support By Amit Kumar Following in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi, who rallied a whole army of Satyagrahis and crusaders around him with his famous padyatras while leading the country's fight for freedom; Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has made foot marches a central theme or feature of his campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Seeking a fresh term from Porbandar, the birthplace of the Father of the Nation and the constituency he currently represents in the Lok Sabha, Mandaviya said he has only been campaigning on foot, as opposed to holding gilded roadshows, going door-to-door to seek electoral support for himself and his party. Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, the Union Minister said, I am contesting the elections from Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. As is recorded in our history, the Mahatma organised and took out several padyatras here. Since I am contesting the elections from this hallowed turf, I took inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi in making padyatras the feature of my campaign. Further expanding on his campaign strategy, the BJP leader told ANI, I have been visiting the villages here on the campaign trail. I make it a point to get out of my vehicle in every corner of these villages and take out padyatras to engage with the locals. Foot marches have been central to my campaigning here. On the response to his padyatras, the BJP's Porbandar candidate said further, I have been receiving a lot of affection and support from locals during the padyatras, with many joining us willingly. Elderly mothers are blessing us while the youth, especially girls, are according us a traditional welcome with kumkum tilak (a mark of vermillion on one's forehead). These foot marches are enabling me to connect with the voters directly and seek their blessings and support. He said his campaign on foot has not only afforded him an opportunity to engage with voters from up close but has also reduced his campaign expenses. I believe we should do what we can to cut down on unnecessary expenses. We should also be alert and awake to the problems and inconveniences of locals. Where will people find shelter from the hot sun if you set the stage at 1 in the afternoon when it is baking hot at 45 degrees? That's why I decided to run my campaign in Porbandar through padyatras. I walk through villages, take out foot marches and address people under trees with a microphone. So there's no need to set a stage and arrange chairs. This approach has also made campaigning a lot more hassle-free while reducing needless expenses. I am consciously cutting down on expenses while carrying my campaign forward, he added Mandaviya is pitted against the Congress' Lalit Vasoya, a former MLA, who belongs to the Patidar community in the battle for the Porbandar Lok Sabha seat. Before becoming a Rajya Sabha member, Mandaviya was elected an MLA from the Palitana assembly seat of Bhavnagar in 2002. Polling for 25 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat will be held in a single phase on May 7, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 4. (ANI)

Coimbatore to be supplied water once in 15 days, people told to use it judiciously

COIMBATORE : With the water levels in the reservoirs dropping at a drastic rate, officials have advised the people in Coimbatore city to use the water sparingly and wisely. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) officials have alerted people in several areas that water would be supplied once in 15 days and asked people to store water until the next supply. The water level in the three major reservoirs including the Pillur Dam, Siruvani Dam and the Aliyar Dam which are the primary source of water supply to Coimbatore have been declining drastically over the past few days due to the scorching summer season. Currently, out of the agreed 104.4 Million Liters per Day (MLD) of water, only a mere 35 MLD of water is being supplied from the Siruvani Dam to Coimbatore. Similarly, the water supply from the Pillur and Aliyar dams has also been reduced due to the dip in the water storage levels. Coimbatore city has been facing an acute water shortage now as the water catchment areas of the dams received a poor amount of rainfall during the two monsoon seasons last year and there has been no rainfall in the areas this year so far. In this situation, the civic body has slightly prolonged the water supply frequency to residential areas in the city. In certain areas, the water supply frequency has been doubled by the CCMC officials now raising concerns among the people. J Subbulakshmi, a resident of Bagavathi Gardens told TNIE, Earlier, we were receiving water supply once in every seven days. But now, it has been doubled. The CCMC OHT operator, who alerts the people about the water supply, informed us now that the next supply will be after 15 days and asked us to store the required water in drums. The situation is looking very bleak now. Coimbatore district collector Kranthi Kumar Pati has also announced a list of measures taken by the district administration and the CCMC to manage the water crisis situation in the district now. For non-drinking domestic use, water is drawn from 2,649 borewells equipped with pressure pumps in the Corporation, municipalities, town panchayats and village panchayats. Up to 40 million litres of water is distributed to the public through Sintex tanks and public pipes. Also permission has been given to set up 50 borewells with pressure pumps in places where water is required and at present 29 bore wells have been constructed. Steps are being taken to install five purifiers to purify borewell water and provide it as drinking water. Also, steps are being taken to purchase four new pressure pumps to supply water from water wells for non-drinking domestic purposes. INTERVIEW | People are waking up to Congresss lies, theyll vote for BRS in LS polls: Nama Nageswara Rao

BRS Khammam candidate Nama Nageswara Rao claims that the people of Telangana are angry with the Congress government as it failed in all aspects. In an exclusive interview with TNIEs B Satyanarayana Reddy, the incumbent MP says that the people have now woken up to the lies of the Congress and they have decided to vote for the BRS in the Lok Sabha polls looking at the track record of the pink party in implementing multiple welfare and development initiatives. Stating that his political values are sincerity and integrity, the former BRS floor leader in the Lok Sabha said he brought in thousands of crores from the Centre for the development of Khammam in the last 10 years. Excerpts from the interview How is your campaign going on and what kind of response have you been receiving from he people? The peoples response has been very positive. Theyve come to realise that the Congress came to power by deceiving them. During my campaigning, people have been expressing their grievances against the Congress government for failing to fulfil the promises it made to them. Farmers, in particular, reminisce about the days when the BRS was in power and how the then chief minister [K Chandrasekhar Rao] had extended schemes like Rythu Bandhu. What strategies are you employing to seek votes? When I interact with the people, I explain to them how the Congress has betrayed them by not fulfilling the promises, including `15,000 under Rythu Bharosa, Rythu Bharosa for podu lands, 10 grams of gold for under the Kalyana Laxmi scheme, `4,000 pension and financial assistance for unemployed youth. I also highlight the dire situation faced by farmers, with crops drying up in the erstwhile Khammam district due to water shortage, and the governments failure to address these issues. What were your achievements during your 10-year tenure as Khammam MP? During my tenure, I managed to bring `10,000 crore funds for the development of the constituency. I played a crucial role in securing approvals for `8,000 crore worth of national highway projects around Khammam. Before my term, there was no four-lane road from Khammam to Suryapet. Before that, numerous accidents used to occur on the existing two-lane road. Through persistent efforts, including writing 120 letters to the Union government, we finally completed the road, due to which people are now able to travel safely on this route. Additionally, I advocated for and facilitated the construction of a new railway line from Bhadrachalam to Kovvur, which has been completed up to Sathupalli. I have also played a major role in the completion of several railway under and over bridges in the district. I also secured funding for various works under the MGNREGS and Prime Minister Sadak Yojana schemes. Due to these efforts, Khammam and Madhira railway stations have also been developed. How is the support from the party high command, and what role are local leaders playing in your campaign? The party is extending complete support in all aspects. Local leaders from all the seven Assembly segments, including Puvvada Ajay Kumar, Tata Madhu, Kandala Upender Reddy and Vanama Venkateswara Rao, along with former MLAs, are actively participating in my campaign. They are vigorously campaigning and working towards ensuring my victory. The people are aware of the welfare schemes implemented by the BRS and they have decided to cast their votes for the BRS. Are you optimistic of retaining the Khammam seat? I firmly believe that I will win with a significant majority. This isnt just my claim. This is the sentiment among people.

PS5 update will let you invite people to multiplayer games through your smartphone's apps

Sony just announced an interesting feature coming to the PS5 that should streamline the whole process of wrangling people into a multiplayer game. The new tool will let you invite people into a game even when they arent at a console or using the PlayStation app. The system generates a link, via the app, that can be shared anywhere online. When the recipient clicks the link, they will be able to hop into a multiplayer session. You dont even have to be friends. Easy peasy. That sure beats having to send out a lengthy numerical code (side-eyes Nintendo.) The obvious use case scenario here? You meet some people online via social media and want to jump into a game quickly, without having to pass usernames back and forth. Sony says youll be able to start playing together right away. The tool will also generate a QR code along with the link, which is something PS5 owners are already familiar with when it comes to multiplayer games. There are some caveats. This feature isnt coming until later in the year and its only for PS5 games. Sony also warns that some titles may require an update before everything works seamlessly. Of course, most PS5 games require a PlayStation Plus subscription to use multiplayer, and those subscriptions went up in price last year . Sony has even developed a custom live widget for multiplayer invites in Discord. When you share a link via Discord, the widget automatically refreshes to show whether or not a multiplayer session is active or not, so you wont jump into an empty lobby to watch tumbleweeds roll by. Just like the forthcoming invite tool, the Discord widget is only available for PS5 games. Sony Finally, the companys working on a related tool that will let people share their PlayStation Network profile on any messaging or social app by generating a link on the PlayStation app, similar to how the aforementioned feature will work. This is also coming later this year. Uddhav Thackeray Apologizes to People for Seeking Votes for Modi

Uddhav Thackeray Apologizes to People for Seeking Votes for Modi Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi government at the Centre of betraying Maharashtra, and apologised to the people for seeking votes for Modi in the 2014 and 2019 polls. Speaking at an election rally at Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district, Thackeray claimed that by calling his party a ''fake'' Shiv Sena, Prime Minister Modi was trying to put pressure on the Supreme Court before whom litigation related to the split in the party is pending. Speaking at the same rally, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar said that Modi, during visits to Maharashtra, only criticises him (Pawar) and Thackeray instead of speaking about his plans for the state. Pawar also accused the Centre of misusing central agencies and pointed to the arrests of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in alleged corruption cases. Thackeray said when no one was willing to join hands with the BJP, the Shiv Sena formed an alliance with it. The saffron party, however, brought down the government of a man whose family had given it everything, he said, referring to the fall of his government in June 2022. ''I apologise for seeking votes for Modi (in the past) because his government has betrayed Maharashtra,'' the Sena (UBT) chief added. He also accused the BJP of using the Shiv Sena in the Lok Sabha elections but scheming to defeat its candidates in assembly polls. ''You used Shiv Sainiks (in Lok Sabha polls) but defeated our candidates (in assembly polls). I have come to avenge it,'' said Thackeray who parted ways with the BJP in 2019.
