The LITDA has already ramped up the facilities at the receiving point in Kadmatt, which is the nearest port of arrival from the mainland, the officials said. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep Island earlier this year, the island administration (union territory) moved in many ways to improve the connectivity between the mainland at Kochi and at Mangaluru. According to the officials, this is the first step and things will be easier for people of Lakshadweep to arrive in Mangaluru for several types of tourism including the western ghats eco tourism, educational, health and recreation tourism in the mainland. Karnataka, part of the mainland, and Lakshadweep share a common history since 1783 as it was Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan who protected the entry of mainland marauders into Lakshadweep Islands and prevented them from pillaging the island paradise. But after 1799, when Tippu Sultan died in Srirangapatnam near Mysore, the people of Lakshadweep lost their freedom again as the British conquered the islands. The beautiful cluster of small islands, Lakshadweep is one of the worlds most spectacular tropical island systems. Thirty two sq km of land spread over 36 islands surrounded by 4,200 sq km of lagoon is rich in marine wealth. The heritage of ecology and culture is supported by an extremely fragile ecosystem. Committed to the cause of eco tourism, Union Territory of Lakshadweep has consciously followed a middle path between tourism promotion and environmental conservation. The administration is carefully monitoring the environmental impact of coastal tourism and has taken steps to promote tourism in a way that is consistent with ecological concerns. The first passenger Vessel M.V.Aminidevi had set sail for Kadmatt island in Lakshadweep Islands on 6 November with 150 tourists in 2010. ''This had opened a new horizons in tourism for Karnataka. Earlier this circuit was very circuitous for the people in the interior parts of Karnataka, but the new initiative will help high value tourists from Bangalore, Mysore, Panaji, Mumbai to use Mangalore as a port of departure to Lakshadweep. ''We are now getting inquiries from Karnataka especially Bengaluru,'' according to Lakshadweep Island Tourism Development Authority co-ordinators in Karnataka. The authorities had already prepared the ultra modern tourism facilities in three islands out of the nine which are closer to Mangalore in terms of navigation. The two islands of Minicoy and Kalpeni are closer to Kochi. At Kadmatt water sports like snorkeling, kayaking, diving, cruising and a combination of tourist activities including the local and world culinary attraction has been arranged. The authority are hoping that the tourists from Bengaluru will take advantage of this facility. Earlier they had to go to Kochi. The IT and Business tourists can travel to Lakshadweep at a cost of Rs 5,000 per head on this ship. The travel time is less than 14 hours and if they can squeeze in three days, we have devised a weekend package which is very rejuvenating, said an official from the Union Territory Authority of Lakshadweep Islands. Earlier, only a cargo ship Tipu Sultan was plying between the Islands and the mainland. This route is stated to be one of the oldest in the Indian maritime history. Accommodations in Minicoy, Kalpeni, Kadmatt, Aminidevi are limited and the ship will take tourists only when there is accommodation available on the islands. Panaji: On Monday, airports in Jaipur, Kanpur, and Goa were targeted with bomb threat emails, leading to a significant increase in security measures and the implementation of thorough search operations. Although officials suspect these emails to be hoaxes, efforts are currently underway to trace the sender. This alarming incident occurred just two days after several other airports received similar hoax emails. Dabolim airport in Goa was the latest target, receiving one such email on their official account. In response, the police and bomb squad conducted an extensive search operation after a complaint was lodged by airport authorities. SVT Dhanamjaya Rao, the director of Dabolim airport, emphasized that while security measures have been heightened, regular flight operations remain unaffected. Similarly, Jaipur International Airport also received a threatening email on Monday morning. After a meticulous search operation, no suspicious items were found. PANAJI: An email about a bomb at the Dabolim airport in South Goa sent the authorities into a tizzy on Monday, prompting them to increase the security on the premises, a senior official said. Talking to PTI, airport director S V T Dhanamjaya Rao said his office received an email in the morning about a bomb at the airport. We are taking extra precautions now. ''Rains caused waterlogging on several streets on Saturday morning. Among the worst affected was the main market area in capital Panaji,'' an official said. Businessman arrested after blast at his cashew farm in Goa; forensic team reaches site
PANAJI: Police arrested a local businessman on Tuesday morning after a massive blast at his cashew farm in a village in North Goa district where forensic experts have started an investigation, an official said. The entire area was sealed following the incident in Ansolem village on Monday evening. A forensic team along with experts on explosives arrived at the spot on Tuesday morning, he said. As per the initial investigation, gelatin sticks stored in one of the godowns at the private cashew farm exploded at around 8 pm on Monday, they said. There was no casualty but several houses around the farm developed cracks due to the blast and the structure where the explosives were stocked collapsed, a police official said. The explosion was heard even up to Valpoi town, located four kilometres from the blast site. A large number of people were participating in the Shim Parade in Valpoi town at the time of the incident, he said. The Valpoi police arrested Naseer Hussain Jamadar on Monday night after the blast at the cashew farm owned by him at Ansolem village in Bhironda panchayat of Sattari taluka in North Goa, the official said. The accused has been booked under sections 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substances), 427 (mischief causing loss or damage to a property) and 286 (negligent act with respect to explosive substance so as to endanger human life) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Explosive Substances Act, he said. The structure where the explosives were stored completely collapsed. The impact of the blast was such that houses situated 2-3 kilometres away developed cracks, the official said, adding there was no casualty. The police said they were investigating how such a huge quantity of explosives was procured. A senior police official said gelatin explosives were being used in stone crusher plants located in surrounding areas. Local MLA Deviya Rane in a post on X on Monday said they had received reports of a blast at Ansolem in Bhironda Panchayat and that no casualties were reported at the site. A thorough investigation is underway, she said, adding that stringent action will be taken once the probe is concluded.

ED questions AAP's Goa unit chief, three others in money laundering case
PANAJI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday began questioning Aam Aadmi Party's Goa unit president Amit Palekar and three others in connection with a money laundering case. The ED had summoned Palekar, AAP leader Ramrao Wagh and two others - Dattaprasad Naik and Ashok Naik - for questioning in a case registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Although details of the case are yet to be known, sources said they were called for questioning in the money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, in which Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and some other AAP leaders have been arrested. Dattaprasad and Ashok are leaders of the Bhandari community in Goa. Palekar arrived at the ED office here at 12.10 pm, while the three others reached there before him at 11.15 am. Before entering the agency office, Palekar only said, I have been summoned. I will talk to you all after I am back. After coming out of the office around 2 pm for lunch break, Palekar said, I cannot reveal what the investigation is about. I have joined the probe. Whatever questions they are asking me, I am answering. He said he has been asked to bring the data related to the case. Whatever data the ED has asked me to bring, I will bring. They are doing their job, I will do mine as a citizen, he said. After the break, the central agency started questioning them again. Daughter of mayor from Nepal goes 'missing' in Goa, found in hotel two days later
Panaji, Mar 27 (PTI) Two days after the 36-year-old daughter of a mayor in Nepal was reported missing from Goa, she was traced to a hotel in the coastal state on Wednesday, police said. The woman, Aarti Hamal, was found at the hotel located at Chopdem village in North Goa, around 20 km away from where she went missing on March 25, they said. Hamal was reported missing from the Osho meditation centre near Mandrem in North Goa, where she arrived from Nepal a month back. The management of the centre had lodged a missing person's complaint at Mandrem police station, a senior police official said. Before going missing, the woman was last seen at Siolim (North Goa) on March 25, he said. A massive search operation was launched across the state to trace her, the official said, adding that the eyewitnesses claimed that she was very much in her senses when they last saw her. Police had also started looking for her at another Osho centre in the state located at Canacona, he added. She has been frequently visiting Goa. She had left her phone back at the Osho centre, due to which she could not be traced with the help of technical surveillance, he said. The state police had started searching all the hotels in and around Pernem and Mandrem areas of North Goa, the official said. On Wednesday, Hamal was found in a hotel at Chopdem village along with two other women, who are her friends, he said. The police are in the process of recording her statement, the official said, adding that her family members have arrived in the state. Her father had earlier released a post on social media seeking help from the people to trace her. Petrol costliest in Andhra Pradesh & Kerala; BJP-ruled MP, Bihar close behind Petrol and diesel prices are the costliest in the country in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala while it is cheapest in smaller states and UTs like Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Delhi and those in the North East, mainly due to differential in local sales tax or VAT rates, oil industry data showed. The three state-owned fuel retailers - Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) - last week cut petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2 a litre each, ending a nearly two-year hiatus in price revision. That reduction brought relief to fuel users but rates continue to be above Rs 100 a litre mark in some states due to higher Value Added Tax (VAT). Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP-ruled Andhra Pradesh has the costliest petrol at Rs 109.87 a litre, followed by Left Democratic Front (LDF)-ruled Kerala, where a litre of petrol comes for Rs 107.54. Congress-run Telangana is close behind with petrol costing Rs 107.39 a litre. BJP-ruled states are not far behind - petrol costs Rs 106.45 a litre in Bhopal, Rs 105.16 in Patna (BJP in coalition with JD-U), Rs 104.86 in Jaipur and Rs 104.19 in Mumbai. Mamata Banerjee's TMC-ruled West Bengal has petrol priced at Rs 103.93 a litre. Other states with over Rs 100-a-litre petrol are Odisha (Rs 101.04 a litre in Bhubaneswar), Tamil Nadu (Rs 100.73 in Chennai), and Chattisgarh (Rs 100.37 in Raipur), industry pricing data showed. Petrol is the cheapest in Andaman & Nicobar Island where it comes for Rs 82 a litre, followed by Silvassa and Daman where it comes for Rs 92.38-92.49 a litre. Other smaller states too have local VAT, leading to cheaper petrol - Delhi (Rs 94.76 a litre), Panaji (Rs 95.19), Aizawl (Rs 93.68), and Guwahati (Rs 96.12). Most North Eastern states are among the lower-end of the petrol price band. Diesel prices have almost a similar story with Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh selling the fuel at Rs 97.6 a litre, followed by Rs 96.41 a litre in Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram, Rs 95.63 in Hyderabad and Rs 93.31 in Raipur. The fuel is in the Rs 92-93 a litre range in BJP-ruled sales of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Bihar. It is also in that range in Odisha and Jharkhand. Diesel is the cheapest in Andaman & Nicobar Island where it comes for about Rs 78 a litre. Delhi - which has the lowest VAT among metro cities - has diesel priced at Rs 87.66 a litre, while in Goa it costs Rs 87.76 per litre. Commenting on the price cut, Goldman Sachs said the net marketing margin of the three oil marketing companies will decline to Rs 08-09 a litre from Rs 1.7-2.7 a litre. Morgan Stanley said the price cut ''should finally remove a key overhang for fuel retailers''. ''The Rs 2 per liter price cut (our estimate was for Rs 2-3 a litre) brings India's fuel basket to USD 85 per barrel Brent crude (i.e. breakeven fuel marketing profitability at this crude price). However, the implied integrated fuel margins for retailers will average 30 per cent above mid-cycle considering the strength in refinery margins,'' it said. JP Morgan said the effect of the reduction is equivalent to about a USD 3.5 a barrel increase in crude oil prices. ''Although small on headline, a Rs 2 per liter cut will reduce oil marketing companies' revenue / EBITDA by about Rs 30,000 crore annualized.'' A retail price cut, it said, was expected as the three companies had become highly profitable in the last three quarters, and ahead of general elections due in a few weeks. ''That prices have been cut one-time, and without any signal that pricing goes back to being crude linked (with periodical revisions) can be seen as a negative for these businesses, in our view. Yet, the price cut is relatively modest and seems unlikely to be followed by more (at least near term) - crystallizing the risk for these companies.'' Emkay Global Financial Services said the price cut translates to a reduction of Rs 1.6-1.7 a litre in gross marketing margins. ''In our view, this cut will be effective for next 2-2.5 months and once national elections are over, we would return to a normalized margin scenario. Deepening deregulation with resumption of daily pricing should likely pass any USD 5-10 a barrel movement in oil prices.''

The accident took place near Quepem town on Saturday night. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and social welfare minister Subhash Phal Desai,who were passing by the road after a poll campaign, joined the rescue work along with locals. The victims were sitting on the truck's carrier. The driver lost control over the wheels following which the truck turned turtle and fell into the valley, a senior police official said, adding the victims got trapped inside the vehicle. One person died on the spot while 13 others, including five children, as many men and three women, were seriously injured, he said. CM Sawant and the minister, who were passing by the road, joined the rescue work along with the police, fire and emergency services personnel and locals. The injured persons were pulled out from the truck and rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji, the police added.

Congress holds meetings in Goa ahead of LS polls The Congress started holding internal meetings in Goa on Saturday to boost coordination with the INDIA bloc partners and to address the issues faced by the party's local leaders ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, its functionary said.
