Assam Congress seeks disqualification of its own MLA over anti-party activities
Assam Congress seeks disqualification of its own MLA over anti-party activities The Congress on Thursday sought the disqualification of its suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed from the Assam Assembly, handing over a 167-page complaint to the authorities alleging that was directly campaigning against the party candidates in the Lok Sabha elections. This was the second time that the party approached Speaker Biswajit Daimary with a written application seeking disqualification of Ahmed. ''Ahmed has been directly campaigning against our party's official candidates. He has even uploaded things against Congress candidates on his Facebook page. This is in clear violation of rules and we have sought immediate action from the speaker, of which we are hopeful,'' Congress deputy leader in the assembly and candidate from Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, Rakibul Hussain said. Hussain, accompanied by AICC general secretary and in-charge of Assam, Pritviraj Sathe and other leaders, handed the complaint to Assembly Secretary Dulal Pegu as Daimary was out of town. ''We spoke to the speaker over the phone and he asked us to submit the complaint to Dulal Pegu. The speaker asked Pegu to update him on the matter immediately,'' the Congress leader added. Sathe said the 167-page complaint included documents and references which showed that MLAs were disqualified from the assembly within 24 hours when they disobeyed the party whip. ''It is the responsibility of the speaker now to set an example by acting against the MLA,'' he added. The Congress had written to Daimary for the first time on April 26, 2022, seeking Ahmed's disqualification for alleged anti-party activities. Ahmed was suspended from the party in October 2021 for ''repeatedly violating party discipline''. He was also arrested by the police prior to the suspension over ''provocative remarks'' he had allegedly made against an eviction drive in Darrang district in September that year.
IMPHAL/CHURACHANDPUR: Monthly dates in Mizoram or maybe Assam if at all, single parenting and the constant fear of abandonment. For Manipur's Meitei-Kuki couples forced to live apart in 'community' enclaves, this is how life has been since ethnic clashes broke out in the state last May. As crisis continues in the polarised state, where the Meitis are concentrated in Imphal Valley and the Kukis have moved to the hills around, inter-tribe couples are facing the cruel brunt of a conflict that has claimed more than 200 lives and displaced many thousands since May 3, 2023. If a mother gets to see her children maybe once a month, there is a father who hasn't seen his daughter since she was born. And then there is the constant fear of family bonds being strained perhaps to breaking point with a wife wondering if her husband will abandon her and a couple contemplating what lies ahead for them as a unit. The future stretches uncertain. Irene Haokip, for instance, is a Kuki who moved to Imphal after she got married. Manipurs lost year shows no sign of ending One year on, the 42-year-old has moved to Churachandpur, a Kuki dominated area, to be with her family while her husband and their children, a five-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter, stay on in Imphal. My husband used to work as a construction contractor. I met him when a neighbour's house in Bishnupur was getting constructed. We fell in love and he would come to the area to meet me often. We got married in 2018 and have two children, Haokip told PTI. Bishnupur is between Meitei dominated Imphal and Kuki dominated Churachandpur. It earlier housed people from both communities and is now considered a buffer zone. My husband sent me to my parents' home last year fearing for my safety in the valley when clashes broke out. There has been no going back since. The children are with him because we fear that they might not be safe in Churachandpur since they are Meitei children, Haokip added. She meets her family once a month in neighbouring Mizoram, travelling 15 hours each way. He brings the children there too. Many other couples also do that. We meet once a month and come back to our respective houses. My children miss me but it feels like a choice between being alive and mothers' love. As Manipuris count their losses, many say that this was not always so. Meitei-Kuki marriages were not uncommon and never a source of societal trouble with the two communities mingling easily. It changed on May 3 when trouble broke out after after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. A month later, Laishram Singh, a Kuki, became a father. He wanted to be the best father when he got to know about his wife's pregnancy in 2022. They were expecting their first child in June and were shopping for clothes and toys. But destiny had other plans. Singh moved to the hills where Kukis live and his wife Achanba, a Meitei, stayed back. She had lost her parents five years ago and had to move to a relief camp in Imphal Valley in May last year where she gave birth to a girl in June. Eleven months later, Singh hasn't yet met his daughter. Achanba worries the distance might just end her marriage. I have a husband but I am still forced to live life as a single mother he calls me sometimes and I send him pictures but the communication is gradually dropping. I fear that if this goes on for long, his family might pressure him into marrying a Kuki girl and he will abandon me. This also causes us to fight. I am not a widow, I am not a divorcee. I don't know what kind of separation is this, Achanba added helplessly. Nirmala, a Kuki, who ran a shop in all women market Ima Keithel till last year, now lives in the hills and has no stable means of livelihood. She also fears being abandoned. Her husband, a Meitei, who lives with their son and his parents in Sugnu area in Meitei dominated Imphal, initially used to send her money but has stopped. We have been married for 15 years. My shop was a good contributor to our household income that has stopped now. Here I live with my brother and sister-in-law and take up odd jobs but there is no stable income. I feel like I am a burden on them if this continues I will have to move to a relief camp, 45-year-old Nirmala told PTI. Others such as Pema Dimpu and her Kuki husband say they are constantly discussing whether they should move to another state. Dimpu, a Meitei, stays in Imphal Valley while her husband has gone to the hills. That seems to be the only way out now that we move somewhere else and start a new life. It has been a year and there is no peace in sight no idea when we can coexist like before without the threat of life constantly looming over us, Dimpu said. The hill state has witnessed sporadic, sometime intense, ethnic clashes since May 3 last year between the majority Meitei community and the Kukis.

Karnataka LS polls: In Phase 2, more women than men voted in the state
BENGALURU: More number of women than men voted in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in the state that was held for 14 constituencies on April 26. Though it is a marginal jump, psephologists and election officials say that the trend of increase in women voters has continued, showing that they are deciding for themselves and their family. As per the latest statistics shared by the Election Commission of India, the male voting percentage was 69.48, while that of females 69.65. A total of 1,00,16,921 males voted as against 1,00,20,796 females, a difference of 3,875 voters. Also, more women voted in all the four constituencies of Bangalore - North, Central, South and Rural -- and Dakshina Kannada. During the 2019 polls, the male percentage was marginally higher than females. It was 69.55% for males and 67.65% for females. In 2014, the male to female voting percentage was 68.59 and 65.79, respectively. Well-known political analyst Sandeep Shastry said the trend of inreasing women voters is an extension of their empowerment. He explained that women vote in a different way compared to men. Studies have shown that they are now not influenced by men, they have greater awareness and they are deciding for the welfare of themselves and their families. The empowerment of the girl child, improved education and increased awareness have led to a rise in women voter turnout. He also pointed out that in the last elections, the women turnout was more in seven states. As per ECI data, in Phase-1 and Phase-2 of Lok Sabha polls, the states and union territories where larger number of women turned up to vote are: Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshwadeep, Manipur, Meghalaya, Puduherry, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala and Karnataka. A senior election official said, During our interaction with people on increasing voter awareness, we learnt that women were more keen to know details and vote as compared to men. Though the enrolment of men was more than women for Phase-2, the turnout of females was more. In Phase-3, the women voters are more than males. We will wait and see if the women turnout will he higher than men here too. Phase-3: Home voting Under Phase-3 of polling for Lok Sabha elections, a total of 32,458 people voted from home, which was 95.16% of the total list of 34,110 voters. Old tiger roars as Congress seeks to remove the scent of Ajmal in Dhubri
GUWAHATI: It will be a battle for survival for Assams most visible Muslim face nationally, Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, when Dhubri goes to parliamentary elections on May 7. The 68-year-old, who is the three-time sitting MP and chief of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), is facing a challenge from Rakibul Hussain, a former Congress minister. Zabed Islam of the Asom Gana Parishad is the NDAs consensus candidate. Dhubri is considered the heartland of Bengali-speaking migrant Muslims. It shares a border with Bangladesh. The outcome of the polls will decide not only the future of Ajmal but also his party. Over the past few years, a section of AIUDF supporters migrated to other parties, disillusioned that he is allegedly running it as a business enterprise. Ajmal is a perfume baron with business interests in India and some Gulf countries. The AIUDF also contested Nagaon and Karimganj, both Muslim-majority seats which went to polls on April 26. Critics say the party set up candidates in these seats primarily to aid the ruling BJP. The BJP and the Congress were the two main players in Nagaon and Karimganj. The Congress is trying to send across a message that Ajmal is an old tiger and that the AIUDF is the B Team of the BJP. It is telling voters that they have to stop Ajmal first if they want to evict the BJP from power in the state. But Ajmal has many advantages. He is rich and known widely as a philanthropist. A virtual messiah of the migrant Muslims, he has been at the forefront every time the community faced any hardships, including during the time when the 1951 National Register of Citizens or NRC was updated in the state. He had comfortably won the past three elections in the absence of strong opponents. But Hussain is expected to give the AIUDF chief a run for his money this time around. For Hussain, who holds sway in parts of central Assam, it is his maiden parliamentary election. Since decades, the Congress had been influential in Dhubri and the adjoining Goalpara and Barpeta districts. Then, it slowly lost the space to the AIUDF. If Hussain wins, it could well be the first step for the Congress towards regaining the lost ground. Badruddin Ajmal is an old tiger. He woos people through magical healing but it will not keep him in a good stead this election, Hussain claimed. But Ajmal dismissed the old tiger barb by saying that a tiger is a tiger, whether young or old. I am young enough to marry again, he said. He predicted that Hussains defeat is 100% certain. Nobody can defeat Ajmal in Dhubri. I will win by 5 to 6 lakh votes, he said confidently.

Delimitation edge for BJP-AGP in Assam's Barpeta
The Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency in Assam has witnessed a significant demographic change following the delimitation exercise last year, shifting from a Muslim-majority to a Hindu-majority seat. The constituency comprises 10 assembly segments and has historically been held by Congress and CPIM, except for 2014 when AIUDF's Sirajuddin Ajmal won. Congress's Abdul Khaleque, the former MP, was dropped due to the constituency's changing demographics, and the party has fielded Deep Bayan.

Modi, Shah didn't stop Prajwal Revanna from fleeing country: Priyanka Gandhi
GUWAHATI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday slammed the BJP for allegedly failing to protect women and cited several instances to buttress her charge. Citing the case of alleged sexual misconduct involving JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna, she alleged the BJP had allowed him to flee the country. They talk about womens security. You must have seen what is happening in Karnataka. A person linked to their party has committed such a crime that thousands of videos have surfaced. From a dais, Modiji sought votes for the person who had committed the crimes. The criminal has fled the country. No one stopped him. Modi did not stop him. Amit Shah did not stop him. He was allowed to leave, Vadra told a crowd while addressing an election rally in Assam. She alleged the BJP remained silent, saved and shielded those who had committed crimes against women in Unnao and Hathras and hit out at the saffron party over the sexual abuse that took place amid last year's violence in Manipur. In Manipur, the wife of a security personnel was stripped and paraded in public (along with another woman). Everyone has seen that video. How were Modi and Amit Shah silent? They did not come to rescue the woman. No action was taken. They are allowing crimes to take place everywhere, Priyanka said, attacking the BJP. Modiji clicked photos with the wrestlers after they had won medals at the Olympics. When the same women said a wrong was done to them by a leader of the party (BJP) and sought help, Modiji remained silent, she said. Calling the prime minister arrogant, Priyanka accused him of remaining far away from reality and staying cut off from the people of the country, with no understanding of their miseries. Like the arrogant kings of olden times, he has no idea about what people are going through. The arrogance is such that their ministers and candidates are asking people to vote the BJP to power again so the party can change the Constitution, the Congress leader said. She slammed the BJP for its claims that it is honest. The BJP often says the Congress did not do anything in 70 years. The Congress did not earn that much money in 70 years, which they (BJP) earned in 10 years. In just 10 years, they have become the richest party in the country and the world. And they say we are corrupt and they are honest, Priyanka said.

Rajnath Singh Revives Mahatma Gandhi's Call to 'Abolish Congress' Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections
Lucknow: In a recent statement, Rajnath Singh, Union Defence Minister and Bharati Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Lucknow, reiterated claims made by Mahatma Gandhi about abolishing Congress shortly after India gained Independence in 1947. Singh's remarks reignited discussions around Gandhi's purported desire to dissolve Congress, a topic that has sparked debates in 2017, 2019, and 2023. According to Singh, Gandhi advocated for the abolition of Congress post-Independence, but his advice went unheeded by the party. Singh added that now, the people themselves are contributing to the effort to abolish Congress. During a roadshow preceding the nomination filing of BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Singh expressed confidence in BJP's prospects in Delhi, stating, I believe that BJP will secure a significant victory on all seats of Delhi. The results of the two phases of elections indicate that our '400 paar' slogan is turning into reality. Singh's statements are in line with a broader political narrative against Congress, with several non-Congress politicians such as Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Venkaiah Naidu, and Jayalalithaa recalling Gandhi's belief that Congress should have disbanded after Independence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in 2019, had remarked, Mahatma Gandhi had long ago realised that Congress has the maximum receiving capacity for all ailments. Hence, he called for disintegrating the Congress. 'Congress Mukt Bharat' is not my slogan, but I am just fulfilling the wish of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi's perspective on Congress was elaborated in his 1909 book 'Hind Swaraj,' where he acknowledged the role of Congress in uniting Indians and nurturing the idea of nationality. He cautioned against treating Congress as an enemy of national growth, emphasizing its contribution to India's journey towards self-rule. Priyanka Gandhi attacks PM Modi in Assam rally
BJP became worlds richest party in 10 yrs, says Priyanka Gandhi
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi (ANI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi (ANI) Guwahati: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi here on Wednesday launched a frontal attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said that the saffron party became the worlds richest party in just 10 years, it is what the grand old Congress party could not earn in 70 years. Addressing an election rally in Western Assams Dhubri, Ms Gandhi accused the BJP of prioritising their own interest over the welfare of the public. She said, BJP became the world's richest party in just 10 years, Congress didn't earn so much in 70 years. Coming down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she called him egoistic and out of touch with reality of common people. Pointing out as to how PM Modi chose to ignore involvement of JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who faced accusations of involvement in a sex scandal, Ms Gandhi alleged, PM Modi is far away from the reality of common people. He has no understanding of their miseries as he has become egoistic. She also accused of a secret understanding between Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AIUDF chief Bai druddin Ajmal, akin to BJPs alleged alliance with Owaisi in Telangana. Asking for vote for six-time Congress MLA and her partys candidate from Dhubri Rakibul Hussain, she alleged, There is mafia raj in Assam...There were serious charges against your CM when he was in the Congress party. As soon as he switched to BJP, all charges against him were washed off. BJP has developed a washing machine where corrupt people are put...Your CM was the first one in this regard. Congress leader accused the present BJP government of pursuing an agenda of appeasement politics, favouring billionaire businessmen at the expense of public interests. Ms Gandhi lamented the rising unemployment rates and economic hardships faced by the populace, attributing them to the government's focus on filling its coffers rather than addressing the needs of the people. She criticized the inadequate relief measures during emergencies and the soaring prices of commodities exacerbated by the imposition of GST. Promising initiatives to uplift women and marginalized communities, Gandhi pledged to provide guaranteed monthly income for women and reservation of 50 percent jobs for women in central government departments under Congress rule. She condemned the silence of the BJP leadership during crises such as the violence in Manipur, alleging selective response based on political convenience. Ms Gandhi urged the electorate to scrutinize the government's actions critically and vote for change in the upcoming elections. She reiterated Congress's manifesto, named Nyay Patra, aimed at exposing BJP's false promises and restoring accountability and inclusivity in governance. She regretted, This govt is entirely focussed on its interests...They are not bothered about the struggles of the public...Unemployment is the highest today. 70 crore people are unemployed... Assam is gearing up for the third phase of Lok Sabha elections with 47 candidates in the fray for four constituencies scheduled for polling on May 7.
