Now, book a private train from Kerala

KOCHI: In a first, private trains will be available for tourists from Kerala to destinations such as Goa, Mumbai and Ayodhya. To begin with, the private train journey from the state to Goa will begin next month. The facility is being launched by SRMPR Global Railways, a Chennai-based tour operator, in partnership with the Kochi-based Princy World Travel Limited. An individual or a group of 600 passengers can book a private train journey to the three prominent destinations from Kerala, said officials. The inaugural journey is set to depart from Thiruvananthapuram on June 4 to Madgaon in Goa. The four-day tour package is available in three categories: 2-tier AC at Rs 16,400 per person, 3-tier AC at Rs 15,150 per person and non-AC sleeper at Rs 13,999. The package includes stay, food and sightseeing. Services like off-board travel and excursions by buses, stay at hotels, tour guides, meals and travel insurance are provided along with these train journeys and allied onboard services. Though the Indian Railways introduced the concept of private players operating tourist trains on theme-based circuits under the Bharat Gaurav Tourist Trains around a couple of years back, this is the first time that a private company is getting into this segment from Kerala. Earlier, such private train tours were launched from states such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. For instance, the government of Karnataka in association with IRCTC operates private trains to Kashi Prayag, Gaya and Ayodhya. Similarly, private trains are operated between Coimbatore and Shirdi. Plan to import private trains from Germany According to officials of Princy Tours, the trains are purchased by SRMPR from the Indian Railways to operate exclusively for tourism purposes. From Kerala, there are mainly three tour packages Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram to Goa (four-day package) and Thiruvananthapuram to Ayodhya (eight-day package), said Devika Menon, director of Princy World Travel Ltd. Plans are on to operate around 12 trains from Kerala. Once the initial three routes gain maximum traction, new routes will be introduced, she said. This train is being introduced on a trial basis. The SRMPR group will import special trains from Germany to run them privately. Hopefully, the trains will arrive by this year's end, she said. The trains have limited stops and only those who have booked the tickets can enter the train. A total of 60 staff, including the paramedical team and pantry are available onboard, said Devika Menon. The train is equipped with CCTV cameras and WiFi. As per the initial plan, the tourist train will operate to the specific destinations with a weeks gap. We have received the slots to operate from June to September. The dates for Mumbai and Ayodhya will be released soon, she said. The trains will have boarding from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod from Kerala.

No approach road to Arkavathy 18th Block, residents complain to Lokayukta

BENGALURU: A forum representing Arkavathy Layout 18th Block residents on Thursday submitted a complaint to the Lokayukta against BDA, stating that due to the lack of an approach road from Hennur Main Road to 18th Block, which has over 600 sites, allottees have had to trespass private properties to access their sites. The complaint also criticises the BDA for not building bridges across sewage drains. The complaint was filed in person by L Hariharan, on behalf of the association, against the BDAs deputy commissioner (land acquisition), the engineer member and executive engineer, North. The Association has made the complaint copy public. The 18th Block was carved out by BDA in Byrathikhane village (off Hennur Road), behind Bangalore International School. The letter states, At the time of formation of 18th Block in 2006, BDA had clearly earmarked a particular stretch of land located near Bangalore International School for the approach road to Arkavathy Layout 18th Block from Hennur Main Road. This particular stretch of land was subsequently denotified by BDA due to various reasons best known to them. The layout presently lacks any approach road connecting it to Hennur Road. The complaint added, We allottees and site owners are currently trespassing several private properties to access our sites, and we are at the mercy of those private individuals to access our sites. The allottees have lease-cum-sale agreements or Absolute Sale Deed for their sites, and have been paying property tax for the past 17 years, it said. In spite of being in physical possession of our sites for 17 years, we have been unable to build our houses as there are several pending court cases. We are facing stiff competition from angry landlosers as they have not been given compensation sites by the BDA yet. Disgruntled landlosers are physically preventing construction of houses or any other activity by allottees until now, the association charged.

Delay in Gruha Lakshmi payment keeps Karnataka BJP leaders guessing

HUBBALLI: BJP leaders in parts of Karnataka where polling will be held on May 7 are apprehensive over delay in the release of the Gruha Lakshmi amount, believing that the government will deposit the money on the day of voting or a little earlier. Under the guarantee scheme, the Congress government provides Rs 2,000 per month to the woman heads of families. And BJP leaders claim that the government is deliberately delaying the release of the amount to influence voters. Though officials in the social welfare department denied the allegations, the BJP cadre is now planning to bring this to the notice of its state president B Y Vijayendra. BJP members alleged that during the phase 1 of elections in Karnataka, which was held on April 26, many beneficiaries in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts got the amount on the day of voting. This time too, the government is planning to clear the dues on the day of voting or a few days before it, they said. The voting day is nearing and we are planning to request our senior leaders to look into this. This will have an impact on the minds of voters and the state government is not allowed to do this, said a BJP worker. An official from the Ballari administration explained that the Gruha Lakshmi amount is released by the state government in installments. We start making payments to the beneficiaries by the end of the month. If we start paying from the 28th date, it will take about six days to cover the beneficiaries, said the official. Ballari district has 3.5 lakh beneficiary accounts. A total of Rs 556 crore is required per year. An official from the social welfare department said there is a technical issue this month so the payments are yet to be made in Ballari, Koppal and Vijayanagara district. Once the amount is released, we will make the payments, the official said.

Modi guarantees are only lies; democracy must be protected: Kharge at Karnataka poll rally

SHIVAMOGGA: AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modis guarantees are nothing but lies. Only the Congress has implemented its promised guarantees and people are enjoying them in the state. Addressing a rally in support of Shivamogga Congress candidate Geetha Shivarajkumar at Allamaprabhu Maidan here, Kharge alleged that Modi is misleading the country on Congress promise to conduct a caste census. Shivamogga is known for many intellectuals, and several social movements began here. Shivamogga was among the first few districts where land reforms were introduced. When Indira Gandhi introduced land reforms as Prime Minister, did Congress snatch anybodys land and give it to others? We gave land to the needy as per the Land Reforms Act. Lakhs of people from the district benefited from the Act of the Congress. We helped the poor to become land owners. We did not snatch mangalsutras or check peoples almirahs for money. But Modi is spreading lies. He doesnt talk about poor people and unemployment. Modi keeps telling lies that land, mangalsutras and other valuables will be snatched. Dont trust what Modi tells. We are in favour of the poor, Kharge said. Kharge said democracy and the Constitution should be protected. If the Congress comes to power at the Centre, it will curb price rise and solve problems such as unemployment, he added. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alleged that none of the 25 BJP MPs from the state spoke against the injustice done to Karnataka by the Union government. Voters should elect those who work for the progress of Karnataka and raise its problems in the Lok Sabha. None of the 25 BJP MPs from the state spoke about the injustice done to Kannadigas by the Centre. The state is being treated unfairly in the distribution of tax money. Although Rs 5,300 crore was announced in the Union budget for Upper Bhadra Project, not even a single paisa was released. Though the state is facing drought, the Centre released less than 20% of the funds sought by the state. That too, after the state moved the Supreme Court, he said.

Prajwal sexual assault case, Neha murder major poll issues for Congress, BJP in Karnataka

BENGALURU: The Hubballi murder case, where Neha, a college girl was stabbed to death on the campus by a man from a minority community, and the Hassan sex scandal in which JDS MP Prajwal Revanna is accused No 2, have rocked Karnataka which is in the midst of Lok Sabha elections. Now, they have become major issues for Congress and BJP in the 14 LS constituencies of North Karnataka which go to polls on May 7. However, it is to be seen as to what extent they may have a bearing on the prospects of Congress and BJP candidates in the region dominated by the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community. At a rally in Belagavi on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged that the Congress governments appeasement politics resulted in murder of Neha in Hubballi. Parents now fear sending their children to schools and colleges, he said. Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, earlier stated that the murder took place because of personal reasons. This was opposed in strong terms by the girls parents and also BJP leaders. Protests were held across the state, including Ramanagara in Bengaluru Rural LS constituency in South Karnataka, which is dominated by Vokkaligas. In an effort to control the damage done, many Congress leaders met Nehas parents and apologised to them as they felt the issue would affect the prospects of the partys candidates in North Karnataka. But the Grand Old Party is leaving no stone unturned to nail the BJP in Prajwals case as JDS is its alliance partner in the state. Top Congress leaders, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, went hammer and tongs against Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning their silence on the issue. However, some state BJP leaders admitted that the scandal became an embarrassment to their party. But it will not affect BJPs prospects in the 14 LS seats. Here, the murder case is a major issue as the victim hailed from the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, a BJP leader said. The ruling Congress is using Prajwals case to garner votes, especially of women. Protests were held even in Hubballi by its womens wing members. Shouldnt we raise Prajwals case when BJP is using the Hubballi murder case to its advantage?, Bengaluru rural MP DK Suresh questioned. He hit back at JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy, who is busy campaigning for BJP, for attacking Congress over Prajwals case. The BJP will not stand with the rapists. The Congress government should have taken swift action by not letting the accused flee the country, Shah stated on Wednesday in Hubballi. He met Nehas parents in Hubballi. The Congress government has failed in ensuring the safety of women in Karnataka, he alleged.

Pralhad Joshi keen on fifth straight win in Dharwad LS seat, but seers shadow looms large

HUBBALLI: No one has ever won from the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency five times in a row. Now, the question on everyones mind is will Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, and Mines, and NDA candidate Pralhad Joshi, buck the record. Though the polls should be a cakewalk for the incumbent MP, the Congress is giving a tough challenge as its fight this time looks organised and it has the indirect backing of Dingaleshwara Swami of Shirahatti Bhavaikya Peetha, who has pulled out of the race. The composition of the Dharwad constituency (formerly called Dharwad North) changed after delimitation in 2008, but the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad continue to remain its core areas. The constituency has so far only sent five people to the Lok Sabha in 17 elections, clearly indicating that the voters have given more than one chance to each contestant. While three candidates- DK Naikar, Sarojini Mahishi, and Joshi-have been elected four times, the first MP, DP Karmarkar, and Vijay Sankeshwar, have won twice and three times, respectively. After successfully contesting four times from 1962 to 1977 on a Congress ticket, Mahishi lost in the 1980 Garibi Hatao election as she contested on a Janata Party ticket. Mahishi, who was a minister in the Indira Gandhi cabinet, had quit Congress after the Emergency. Contesting the election as a turncoat did not help her and DK Naikar of the Congress taste success. Thereafter, Naikar also won four times in a row between 1980 and 1991 but failed the fifth time. By the 1996 General Elections, the political climate in the Dharwad segment changed with the emergence of the BJP in the wake of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, the demolition of the Babri Masjid, and the agitation to hoist the National Flag at the then-controversial Idgah Maidan in Hubballi. The constituency, which had remained a Congress bastion since the first Lok Sabha polls, elected noted transporter Vijay Sankeshwar of the BJP in 1996. Naikar of the Congress was pushed to third place in that election. Naikar once again unsuccessfully contested in the 1998 polls. Incumbent MP Joshi first won the Lok Sabha polls in 2004 and emerged victorious in the next three hustings (2009, 2014, and 2019). Now, the BJP has fielded him for the fifth time. Joshi has won all four elections consistently with a decent margin against the Congress candidates, and it was just over 2 lakh votes in the 2019 polls against Vinay Kulkarni of the Congress. It was smooth sailing for Joshi, a Brahmin, ahead of the 2024 polls until Dongaleshwara Swami, an influential Lingayat pontiff, raised his voice against him and accused him of oppressing his community leaders. He even demanded the BJP top brass replace Joshii with a Lingayat. Lingayats are close to 25% of the total voters in the constituency. The party did not budge to his demand. Though the seer withdrew from the contest, the Lingayat issue could haunt Joshi and spoil the chances of his victory.

INTERVIEW | Let Congress leaders come for debate on Centres contribution: Umesh Jadhav

Though AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge is not contesting from his home district, this election is being termed as a contest between the Congress veteran and the BJP. You are being projected by opposition parties as a non-performer, and have done nothing for the people of Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency in the past five years. What do you say? Opposition parties, especially the Congress, are under the illusion that if they tell an untruth 100 times, people will believe it. But people are wise enough to judge between truth and falsehood. For example, Congress leaders, including district minister Priyank Kharge, are saying that the Vande Bharat running between Kalaburagi and Bengaluru, which started last month, stopped running within a week. People know it hasnt stopped, but is running six days a week. What are your major contributions in the past five years? Because of continued pressure on the Central government, it has announced establishment of a Mega Textile Park on over 1,000 acres of land near Kalaburagi. The Prime Minister has already launched the project. Once it starts functioning, it will provide direct jobs to 1 lakh people, and indirect jobs to 2 lakh people. Do you think it is a small task? Mallikarjun Kharge was MP for two terms and also Railway minister, he couldnt start a direct train from Kalaburagi to Bengaluru. But Vande Bharat started running between Kalaburagi and Bengaluru. What you have to say about allegations against the Union government? It is my open invitation to AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, whom I defeated in the last election, or to my present opponent Radhakrishna Doddamani, to come for an open debate on what my government has done in the past 10 years, what their government had done in the last 50 years and what I have done in the past five years. If they accept my invitation, it will become clear. Do you think the poll is between Kharge and PM Narendra Modi, or Kharge and Dr Umesh Jadhav, though Mallikarjun Kharge is not contesting? No. The election is between Dr Umesh Jadhav and Kalaburagi district in-charge minister Priyank Kharge, who has taken the lead in criticizing me, saying lies about me. How confident are you about winning? No doubt. Peoples love towards PM Narendra Modi and their desire to see him again as Prime Minister and my work in the constituency will help me win the election.

Paresh Mesta death case: BJP accuses Hemant Nimbalkar of favouring then Siddaramaiah govt

KARWAR: The Paresh Mesta death case of 2018 has returned as a point of contention in the 2024 polls, with Congress candidate Anjali Nimbalkar facing the heat from the BJP, which is accusing her husband and senior police officer Hemant Nimbalkar of favouring the then Siddaramaiah dispensation during the investigation. The case has since been closed, after the CBI filed a B report, stating a lack of concrete evidence to term it a murder. However, it is still being politicised in the district with both Congress and BJP squabbling over it. Anjalis husband is on BJPs radar for cases booked against Hindu activists during that time. The issue reignited when the BJP protested over student Neha Hiremaths murder, when Minister for Ports and Fisheries Mankal Vaidya stated that BJP just needs a dead body for politics, indirectly pointing towards the 2018 issue. Though the allegations reverberated every now and then during the Congress campaign, BJP Lok Sabha candidate Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri spoke for the first time, blaming Hemant Nimbalkar for indiscriminately arresting people and putting them behind bars. We were protesting. We were arrested and booked. He rounded up all the Hindu activists and sent them in a KSRTC bus. Now, years later, the Congress leaders scream, saying we escaped in a KSRTC bus. Nimbalkar was acting on behalf of the Congress government. He arrested people unconcerned with the matter. What did Rupali Naik do to be arrested and booked? Why was Dinakar Shetty arrested? Hundreds of Hindu workers were just arrested to please his Congress bosses, he charged.

One Nation, One Election impractical: Former Karnataka CM Veerappa

BELAGAVI: Former CM Veerappa Moily has called the BJPs plans of bringing about a One Nation, One Election concept a conspiracy, and said by having such a system in force, PM Narendra Modi believes his party would get maximum votes. Moily said that as per the one election theory, the plan was to hold elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, panchayats, local bodies etc., simultaneously. However, at least 60 days were needed to complete the ongoing election to Lok Sabha alone, he said, adding that it may take several years to complete the election if it was held as per BJPs One nation, One election concept. The BJP was planning this concept only to establish its stranglehold on the country, he alleged. Commenting on the LS polls, he said the BJP was claiming it would win more than 400 seats but will have to be content with 150 to 200 seats in reality. Modis 10-year rule will come to an end, he said.

Over 500 saplings saved in Bengaluru's Gangashetty Lake amid extreme summer

BENGALURU: With scorching heat and no borewells around, volunteers in the city used a water pumping motor to use the water from Gangashetty Lake in Mahadevapura Zone, to save 500 tree saplings on the tank bund. The volunteers, however, expressed concern as the lake is almost dry, and they would be able to manage watering the saplings only for the next few weeks. Lake activist Balaji Ragotham said that the tree saplings were planted in August last year. However, this is a big concern now, due to lack of water supply. The saplings are tender and need care. We created awareness and asked volunteers to join the initiative. People used to bring cans to water the saplings, but now they are also facing a shortage. School children were also roped in once or twice in a week. But since February, due to exams and now due to holidays, they are not coming. Hence, we deployed 35 cc motor and using it to water the plants. In one hour, we can water all 500 saplings, Ragotham added. Saplings were planted to protect the lake, address soil erosion and also prevent flooding. Now the 21.4 acres Gangashetty lake is almost dry. If there are no pre-monsoon showers, the lake will dry in 10 days, which will pose another problem for the saplings which might die without any water, Ragotham said expressing his concern. Volunteers are also taking care of about 400 saplings on Varasani lake. The water level in this lake is aslo very low and volunteers are hoping for good pre-monsoon showers for lake to fill.

DK Suresh wants PM, Deve Gowda to respond to Prajwal Revannas alleged sexual assault case

BENGALURU: Bangalore Rural MP and DCM DK Shivakumars younger brother DK Suresh on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda to respond to Prajwal Revannas alleged sexual assault case. The PM, who is accountable for being part of the alliance with the JDS, should reply and also guide on the next course of action, he said, addressing the press. Modi takes different issues of Karnataka elsewhere to dishonour the state. But why is he not talking about this issue? Prime Minister is directly responsible for this. Didnt the Prime Minister know about the sex scandal earlier? Didnt local BJP leaders write to him? he questioned. He alleged that despite the Prajwal case being discussed at the screening committee to select him as NDA candidate, and Kumaraswamy opposing his candidature, the BJP gave him the ticket and campaigned. He also urged Deve Gowda, who he said holds press conferences and writes petitions over trivial issues, to respond to accusations against his grandson. He should interpret the proverb noolinante seere (as saree, as yarn), he quipped. Replying to Kumaraswamys allegation that the Congress government was responsible for Prajwals chauffeur Karthik allegedly leaking the tapes and escaping to Malaysia, Suresh hit back, saying, Kumaraswamy has maintained an international agency and he has all information about it. I have no information about this.

Deve Gowda meets legal experts to defend grandson in sexual assault case

BENGALURU: Former prime minister HD Deve Gowda held deliberations with legal experts to chalk out a strategy to set up a strong defence for his grandson Prajwal Revanna, who finds himself in the midst of a major sex assault case this election season, and has allegedly fled the country. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Congress government in Karnataka, has intensified its probe by issuing a look-out notice on Prajwal, who was reportedly in Germany. Through his lawyers, he had sought seven days time to appear before the SIT. But according to sources, the SIT is likely to reject his application, seeking exemption to appear before it earlier. The SIT may issue another notice, as it is learnt that he has flown to Dubai, sources said. The investigation team wants him to appear at the earliest, to ensure that the accused does not destroy evidence, they added. It is in this regard that Gowda met legal teams at his residence here, in the presence of his son and former CM HD Kumaraswamy, who is also Prajwals uncle. Prajwals parents, HD Revanna and Bhavani, also called on Gowda. The pressure mounted on the Gowda family, as even Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, urging him to take action and cancel Prajwals diplomatic passport.

SIT to invoke rape charge, Prajwal Revanna seeks anticipatory bail

BENGALURU: Holenarsipura MLA HD Revanna on Thursday moved a Special Court for anticipatory bail, in view of the jurisdictional court granting permission to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to invoke charges of rape. The SIT is probing the alleged sexual harassment case involving the former minister and his son Prajwal Revanna, who is Hassan MP. Issuing notice to the SIT, the Special Court to try criminal cases against sitting and former MPs/MLAs adjourned the hearing to Friday. Revanna and Prajwal are the first and second accused respectively, in the case registered by Holenarasipura Town police. Senior counsel Murthy D Naik, on behalf of Revanna, vehemently argued that they have filed an interim bail application along with the petition. Though the alleged offences against Revanna are bailable in nature, subsequently, the investigating agency has sought permission of the competent jurisdictional court to invoke provisions of IPC Section 376 (rape charges), he argued. Further, he argued that the petitioner himself has sworn to that extent, but the copy of the permission accorded by the jurisdictional court to invoke rape charges is yet to be obtained. Considering the submissions made by the counsel, the court issued notice to the investigating agency. At this juncture, the senior counsel submitted that a Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) has been appointed in this case. Taking it on record, the court asked the SPP, B N Jagadeesha, to take notice on behalf of SIT and file objections, if any. Revanna contended that the case has been filed with political malice, to hinder the election prospects of his son Prajwal and to harass him. He is innocent of the alleged crime and has been made a scapegoat by opposition parties as a vengeful attempt to malign his reputation. Suraj Revanna points at conspiracy to weaken his dad Hassan: Admitting that he had met Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in January this year, Suraj Revanna, the elder brother of alleged sex scandal accused Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, on Thursday reiterated that the meeting was only to discuss development works and grants for the same. Speaking to reporters here, Suraj stated that he never met the KPCC chief over any other issue. Since then, he has not met any Congress leaders either. Suraj, who is also an MLC, pointed at an alleged political conspiracy behind filing of an FIR against his father, HD Revanna. The people of Hassan district know Revanna and cannot compare any leader with him. Some political forces are allegedly making futile attempts to weaken and finish off Revanna politically, he alleged. Suraj added that he doesnt know about the case involving his brother Prajwal, and the SIT is probing the alleged sex scandal. We will wait and see, he added. He brushed aside speculation of joining the Congress, while exuding confidence that Prajwal will win the Hassan seat again. ENS

No cold storage facilities, poor infra, flower vendors struggle amid heatwave in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Amidst the double whammy of extreme heat and parched conditions, flower vendors from the bustling city market to local nurseries and flower shops, find themselves grappling with dire consequences as their businesses are severely hit. As a response, some vendors have raised the price of flowers to ensure they sell them fresh before the day heats up while others are managing by selling them at usual prices throughout the day to sustain their livelihood. Many vendors said that the absence of cold storage facilities to store flowers in the hot weather has affected their business. By 9 am itself, the flowers begin drooping under the harsh sun, giving them a dull appearance. There is no proper water source to refresh the flowers, nor do we have proper cold storage facilities. The customers demand fresh flowers but we do not have any alternatives, a flower vendor at KR Market said. Subhash, another vendor said, We lack proper infrastructure to protect flowers from the sun. So we started bringing them in around 12.30 am and informed our customers that we would start selling them between 4 am to 5 am to ensure they stay fresh. Previously, not many vendors started by 12.30-1 am, but now everyone does. We are severely affected this year. Everyone is competing for just an extra Rs 5-10. Even wholesale sellers are not offering the usual prices because flowers are wilting quickly which is resulting in decreased sales for them as well, Subhash added. Not just flowers, neem leaves, and tulsi, too, are drying up in less than two hours, Gayathri, a vendor in Malleswaram said and pointed out that due to the non-functional RO unit throughout the day, there is no water to keep them fresh. The entire cycle of vendors purchasing from us to sell outside temples has almost come to a halt. All our earnings are spent on transportation, there is nothing left for us. Roses are the most preferred by customers and are the most affected by the heat. Apart from other flowers like lilies and orchids, roses start looking dull if the weather heats up even a little, Veeresh, a florist said. To shield the stack from the sun, if we pack it tightly, the rose appears lifeless, but if left as is, it dries up. To maintain current sales, we are selling a bouquet of approximately 10 roses for around Rs 300, which is Rs 70-100 more than the usual price. Although we are purchasing flowers in smaller quantities, we still need to maintain variety to sustain our business. Almost every day, the quantity of flowers discarded exceeds the quantity of flowers sold, Veeresh added.

Ex-cop waits for BDA site in Bengaluru, 18 years after allotment

BENGALURU: It was in June 2006 that MN Rajanna, former Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Intelligence Department, was awarded a BDA site under the ex-servicemen quota. It is May 2024 and his 40 x 60 sq ft site at Byrathikhane in Arkavathy 18th Block is yet to be handed over to him. He is now 80 and keeps frequenting the BDA office for his rightful due. The upright officer, who secured the President of India Gold Medal for his services, has spent the last decade meeting countless officers requesting for his site. Rajanna, who resides with his wife in Bengaluru, told TNIE, I was allotted Site No. 140 on June 24, 2006, and paid the full sum of Rs 4.53 lakh for it too. I got a letter out of the blue on October 23, 2014, from BDA stating that since the dimensions of my site exceeded the conventional 40x60 sq ft site, I had to pay an additional Rs 5.71 lakh. I was shocked but managed to arrange a loan for it. The BDA then awarded him a Lease-cum-Sale Deed (temporary ownership certificate) on December 19, 2014. I also got the khata, the Possession Certificate, and the No Objection Certificate from various sections but I was never given the Absolute Sale Deed. I kept paying an annual property tax of Rs 5,830 annually till 2022. The present market value of that site is around Rs 85 lakh. During one of his visits to the BDA office in 2018 for his Absolute Sale Deed, Rajanna was told by officers of Bengaluru North to opt for an alternative site in any other BDA Layout. Three staffers told me that they had received oral instructions to convey it to me. They were issued show cause notices by the then Commissioner for misleading me, Rajanna added. Later, Arkavathy Layout was changed and as per the new Common Dimensional Report in 2018, Site No. 132 in Arkavathy was listed as my property. Its dimensions were less, only 40x57 sq ft, but I was okay with it. However, the approval file was sent to the Town Planning Department for their consent which was unnecessary and this delayed it by three months. The High Court had set up the Justice Keshava Narayana Committee to take care of problems of Arkavathy Layout allottees. I approached this committee which issued an order on October 20,2023, allotting Site No.105 for me. The BDA was instructed to hand it over to me within 15 days. Six months down the line, this too has not been done. BDA commisioner N Jayaram said that he will check into the matter.

Showers of relief over Bengaluru, similar weather this weekend

BENGALURU: Bengalureans experienced temporary relief from the excruciating heat after parts of the city witnessed light to moderate rainfalls on Thursday evening. Four trees were uprooted in Girinagar, two each in Srinagar, Telecom Layout, Vijaynagar and Azad Nagar Maternity Hospital premises and one each near Hosahalli Metro Station, Koramangala, and Padmanabhanagar. Bengaluru sees dry April for the first time in 123 years

BENGALURU: For the first time in 123 years, Bengaluru experienced a dry spell in April. But now after a gap of 159 days, parts of the city received light to moderate rain on Thursday. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru director N Puviarasan, from 1901 to 2024, it was the first time that the city IMD observatory recorded no rain in April. There were reports of light to moderate rain in parts of the city on Thursday evening. But IMDs observatories did not record any rain. However, cloud formation and sudden change in weather conditions in the evening gave hope to Bengalureans of a respite from the scorching summer. Puviarasan said some places in the city will receive rain due to local convection. However, thundershowers will occur after five days. Formation of Clumino-nimbus clouds and thundershowers happen due to local convection. He said while there will be a respite from rising temperatures for south interior Karnataka, the heat wave alert will continue for north interior Karnataka.

Long-neglected Thamballapalle constituency pins hope on electoral outcome

Tirupati: The Thamballapalle constituency, located at the intersection of Kadapa and Anantapur districts and Karnataka, may be one of the most underdeveloped regions in former Chittoor district, but it's a hotbed of political activity. Dominated by the Backward Classes (BC) community, this drought-prone area has for long grappled with economic neglect from successive governments. With 2,24,664 total voters, including 1,10,557 males, 1,14,095 females and 12 others, this segment packs a considerable electoral punch despite its backwardness. In recent years, though, respite has come in the form of significant rainfall. Yet, the farmers struggle to get minimum support price for their produce. This has led many to migrate to neighbouring districts and Karnataka in search of livelihood. The region, although receiving water through the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi project, remains economically underdeveloped. However, it boasts of the presence of notable landmarks such as the famous Horsley Hills and the prestigious Rishi Valley school. As the polls approach, the long-neglected Thamballapalle constituency is pinning its hopes on the electoral outcome, yearning for a government that will prioritize its development and address its long-standing issues. The incumbent YSRC is fighting to retain its stronghold after clinching a resounding victory in 2019. Its candidate, Peddireddy Dwarakanath Reddy brother of minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy trounced his Telugu Desam rival and then sitting MLA Shankar Yadav by 46,938 votes. In 2014, Shankar had defeated YSRC's Praveen Kumar Reddy by 9,190 votes. Intriguingly, in 2009, Praveen had run on a TD ticket, besting Yadav, who was then the Congress candidate highlighting the fluidity of political loyalties. Since its inception in 1983, the TD has secured this seat four times (1983, 1994, 2009, 2014), while the Congress has won it six times. The YSRC and the Swatantra Party have tasted victory once each, with independents also clinching two terms. Dwarakanath Reddy, the ruling party's candidate, aims to leverage his family's regional influence and the welfare schemes of the Jagan Mohan Reddy government. Conversely, the TD, having lost the 2019 election, seeks a comeback by nominating businessman Dasarapalle Jayachandra Reddy from Mulakalacheruvu mandal. He aims to tap into the perceived anti-incumbency sentiment and leverage the party's promises of implementing sops to woo voters.
