KOLKATA: A day after Kunal Ghosh was removed as the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, he said on Thursday that he would continue to work as a grassroot worker of the party. Woman accuses WB governor of molestation, lodges police complaint
Kolkata: In what has stumped the BJP amid the Lok Sabha Election in West Bengal, a woman accused Governor C.V. Ananda Bose of molesting her at Raj Bhavan on Thursday hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the governors house to spend the night for his poll campaign in three districts on Friday The victim, working on contract since 2019 at Raj Bhavan, also stays at an accommodation there. She lodged a complaint at the Hare Street police station in the evening, alleging that the Governor outraged her modesty on the pretext of making her job permanent with a promotion. According to the complaint, the woman was called by Bose to his chamber last week for a meeting after her transfer from a department to another recently. She, however, left the chamber after feeling uncomfortable by his behaviour. On Thursday, the woman was again called by the Governor to his chamber. This time, she took her colleague who was, however, asked to leave the chamber. The victim claimed that the Governor behaved with her indecently. She rushed out crying and reached the police outpost. Lashing out at Bose, TMC posted on X handle, Appalling and unthinkable! The sanctity of Raj Bhavan, a symbol of our constitutionality, has been tarnished. Hours before PM Narendra Modi was supposed to arrive at Raj Bhavan to spend the night, a woman was allegedly molested by the Governor under the false pretext of a job. Omitting Rinku Singh: Among a plethora of decisions that they took while selecting the Indian squad for the Men's T20 World Cup to be played in the United States and the Caribbean, Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the national selection committee, said the toughest was to decide not to pick young batting sensation Rinku Singh, who has impressed many with his brilliant death-over batting in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rinku has played some blazing innings for Kolkata Knight Riders, including hitting four sixes off the last four matches to seal victory for his team. This season, Rinku has scored 123 runs in eight innings coming down in the death overs to score at a strike rate of 150. I don't think it's anything to do with Rinku Singh. It's not his fault that he has missed out. It's more the 15 that we felt gives (India the best chance). With two keepers who are both terrific batters, there is already an extra batter sitting out, he said. Agarkar also said handing the vice-captaincy of the team to Hardik Pandya was not a matter of discussion. Not really, no. Nothing was discussed about vice-captaincy. I mean, you want all guys to be in good form. I think he is coming after a long layoff. The good part that we have looked at is he has gotten through all the games so far for MI (Mumbai Indians) and we have got another month and a little bit till we play our first game. So we know he is doing that and the hope is that he keeps building on that form. So as long as he stays fit, we know what he brings, how much balance he gives the team. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was hearing a matter where it had taken suo motu cognisance of a PTI report regarding the blaze that occurred in a material yard of unit 3 of the power plant on April 19. The installation is a 660X3 MW coal-based power plant of the NTPC, the country's largest power generation company. In an order passed on Wednesday, a bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A Senthil Vel said the matter raised a ''substantial issue'' regarding compliance with environmental norms. The bench impleaded as parties or respondents authorities, including the plants administrative head, member secretaries of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) and the deputy commissioner or district magistrate of Chatra. It noted that counsel for the central and state pollution board had appeared before the tribunal. ''Let notice be issued to Respondents No. 3 and (DC or DM) and 4 (plants administrative head) and response be filed by the respondents, the tribunal said. The matter has been posted before the eastern bench of the tribunal in Kolkata on July 5.

CBI Launches Probe into Alleged Land Grabbing by Trinamool Congress Leader in Sandeshkhali
Kolkata: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team visited Rajbari area of Sandeshkhali on Thursday to probe land grabbing allegations against Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan. The team met villagers who had alleged land grabbing and torture of women by former Trinamool Congress strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates. A complainant from Rajbari said, Two years ago Sheikh Shahjahan and his close aid grabbed my land. I went to every police stations nearby me but they didn't responded. Panchayat demanded Rs 10,000 from me to deliver justice. Now I lodged complaint online on CBI portal. I wish I will get my land soon. Meanwhile, CBI has taken a significant step in its investigation into the attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Sandeshkhali and sent notices to two individuals, Sirajul Mir in the Akunji Para Mor area in Sandeshkhali and local TMC leader Aftar Mollah in Mollapara in Rampur closely associated with Sheikh Shahjahan. The notice asked them to appear before the CBI office in connection with the attack on the ED on January 5. Sheikh Shahjahan, a former TMC strongman, was accused of sexual violence and land grab by several women in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali. He was arrested on February 29, after 55 days on the run, in connection with a case related to the attack on Enforcement Directorate officials. The Calcutta High Court in the Sandeshkhali case said that the CBI in its report has mentioned huge volumes of land grabbing allegations and lack of proper cooperation from the state authorities. The Court also directed the state to deploy more staff to help with the investigation. Calcutta High Court chief justice division bench also allowed NHRC (National Human Rights Commission of India) as a party in Sandeshkhali case. The CBI have already started their investigation into the matter. The CBI at this point, doesn't want to reveal the contents of the report as the investigation is still on and it may harm the process. On Monday, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing on West Bengal government's plea challenging Calcutta High Court order directing a CBI investigation into allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali, till July. West Bengal government moved the Supreme Court to challenge the Calcutta High Court's April 10 order for a CBI investigation into allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali. Earlier on April 25, following the Calcutta High Court order, the CBI registered an FIR against five people and unknown others in connection with the ongoing probe into cases concerning land grabs and crimes against women (sexual) in Sandeshkhali. The women of Sandeshkhali in the North 24 Parganas district came out on the streets earlier against the ruling TMC and Shahjahan, accusing the strongman and his aides of perpetrating gross excesses and atrocities on them while also gobbling up their land. Multiple women on the island accused Shajahan and his aides of land-grab and sexual assault under coercion. The Basirhat court had sent Shahjahan to CBI custody. Kolkata Knight Riders: With their campaign in disarray following seven defeats in 10 matches, five-time winners Mumbai Indians return home after three successive away defeats in four games for their next three home matches in the IPL 2024, starting with a clash against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday. MI are currently tied for the bottom spot with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, both have six points from three wins -- they are placed ninth on NRR. Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, are second in the points table with 12 points from nine matches with 12 points. Though Mumbai have lost quite a lot of battles, the war is not over yet, they still have faint chances. They need a miracle to make it to the next stage this season. Bengaluru student tries to open emergency door on plane
BENGALURU: A 22-year-old engineering student has been booked by Bengaluru airport police for attempting to open the emergency door of an IndiGo flight from Kolkata to Bengaluru mid-air on Monday night. Following an FIR booked by Indigo, Koushik Karan, a native of Bankura in West Bengal, was arrested on Wednesday (May 1) and later released on station bail. The flight (No 6E-6314) had taken off on April 29 from Kolkata at 8.15 pm and was scheduled to reach Terminal 1 of Kempegowda International Airport by 10.30 pm. Karan was assigned seat no 18E, but he opted to occupy seat no 18F where the emergency exit door is positioned. He removed the flap cover on the handle from the starboard side (right side) of the emergency door when the aircraft was nearing Bengaluru airport, said a CISF source. The crew prevented Karan from opening the door. The source added, The pilot declared him unruly and handed him over to IndiGo security staff and the CISF on arrival at Bengaluru. The airlines staff handed him over to KIA police on Tuesday (April 30) at 12.33 am. An IndiGo staffer, Mohammed Umar, filed a complaint with KIA on Tuesday. Police have booked an FIR under section 336 of IPC 1860 that deals with rash or negligent acts that endanger life or the personal safety of others.

It said that there will not be any large change in maximum temperature during the next two days and thereby it will fall gradually in the subsequent three days in the region. The severe weather conditions in the southern and western districts of West Bengal are being caused by dry westerly winds and strong solar insolation, the Met said. Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur district recorded West Bengal's highest temperature on Wednesday at 45.2 degrees Celsius, while Jhargram followed closely at 44.5 degrees Celsius, the Met said. In Panagarh and Purulia, the mercury touched the 44.1 degrees mark. Kolkata recorded 42 degrees Celsius as its highest temperature on the day while neighbouring Salt Lake was a little cooler at 41.1 degrees, the Met said. Among the other places which recorded above-40-degree Celsius temperatures are Medinipur (43.4), Bankura (43.3), Krishnanagar (42.2), Bardhaman (42), Asansol (42.3), and Sriniketan (41.8), the Met data said.

TMC State General Secretary Kunal Ghosh Removed; States Desire to Stay in Party Hours after Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh shared a stage with a BJP Lok Sabha candidate and praised him, the TMC on Wednesday removed him from the post of state general secretary for making statements not aligning with the party. The former Rajya Sabha member who has been seeking more prominence for next-generation leaders, said he had already expressed his desire to resign as party spokesperson and state general secretary in March. The party then accepted his resignation as spokesperson but asked him to continue with the other post. ''Kunal Ghosh has been expressing views that don't align with the party. Mr Ghosh was previously relieved from his role as party spokesperson. Now he has been removed from the position of general secretary of the state organization,'' the TMC said in a statement. In the statement signed by TMC Rajya Sabha party leader Derek O'Brien, the party also asked media outlets not to conflate Ghosh's views with those of the party, warning that doing so might invite legal action. ''It is important to clarify that these are his personal opinions.... Only statements issued from the AITC (All India Trinamool Congress) headquarters should be considered the official position of the party,'' it said. Reacting to his removal, Ghosh said, ''There is no point in saying I am being removed as I had already put in my papers as party's state general secretary and spokesperson.'' He lamented that the party decided to clip his wings when he was ''working as a loyal soldier of the party.'' ''It is ironic that the opposition leaders are happy that Kunal Ghosh has been asked not to speak out for his own party. I was with the party, I am with the TMC and would like to continue in the party,'' he said. Despite his removal from the post of party spokesperson, he has been holding press conferences regularly from the party headquarters during the ongoing Lok Sabha election campaign. A senior TMC leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity, described Ghosh's removal as a ''calibrated punishment,'' indicating that his removal as state spokesperson in March was a warning, and this removal as state general secretary is the final action. Ghosh did not take part in TMC's Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituency Sudip Bandopadhyay's rally, but attended a blood donation programme where BJP nominee Tapas Ray was present. At the programme, Ghosh said, ''Tapas Ray is a true leader. His doors are always open for party workers and people. I have known him for several decades. Unfortunately, our paths are now different... TMC national general secretary and Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek, endorsed a retirement age in politics and cited a decline in work efficiency and productivity with advancing age. A journalist by profession in the vernacular media, Ghosh's rise and fall in the TMC has been a matter of debate. A vocal critic of the Left Front regime, Ghosh was rewarded with a Rajya Sabha nomination by the TMC in 2012. However, after the Saradha Chit fund scam bubble burst in 2013, Ghosh, then CEO of the Saradha media group, openly clashed with the TMC. He was arrested in November 2013 in connection with the Saradha Chit fund scam and was subsequently suspended by the party. Later, after the CBI took over the investigation, Ghosh continued to speak out against the leadership. In 2016, he was granted bail by the court. In July 2020, he was appointed TMC's spokesperson, and in June 2021, he was appointed the party's state general secretary.

TMC axes Kunal Ghosh from Bengal general secretary post for sharing dais with BJP candidate

The development comes hours after Ghosh shared a stage with the BJP's Kolkata North candidate, Tapas Ray and heaped praise on him. A statement signed by party MP Derek OBrien said, Kunal Ghosh has been expressing views that do not align with those of the party. It is important to clarify that these are his personal opinions and should not be attributed to the party. Only statements issued from AITC headquarters should be considered the party's official position, the statement continued. According to the party statement, Ghosh was previously relieved from his role as party spokesperson and now has been removed from the position of General Secretary of the state organisation. Ghosh also missed a rally by the partys candidate from the Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituency, Sudip Bandopadhyay, for a blood donation programme, which was attended by Ray. Tapas Ray is a true mass leader. His doors are always open for party workers and people. I have known him for several decades. Unfortunately, our paths are now different despite our best efforts to retain him, Ghosh had said after he shared the stage with Ray. Earlier, Ray had accused the TMC of showing narrow politics, if it were to remove Ghosh for sharing the stage with him.
