Haryana Congress MLA directed by SC to join probe: ED

NEW DELHI: Haryana Congress MLA Dharam Singh Chokker has been directed by the Supreme Court to join the probe in a money laundering case in which one of his sons has been arrested and the other is absconding, the Enforcement Directorate said on Thursday.Sikandar Singh Chokker was arrested by the federal probe agency from Haridwar in Uttarakhand on April 30. His brother Vikas Chokker is absconding. Following his arrest, Sikandar Singh was brought to Haryana's Gurugram where a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court sent him to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till May 6. He was absconding for the last four months and a court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him, the agency said in a statement. The money laundering case against the Chokkers and entities linked to them stems from multiple FIRs of the Gurugram Police that had booked Dharam Singh, 60, who represents Samalkha in the Haryana assembly, Sikandar Singh, and a company named Sai Aaina Farms Pvt. Ltd. and its associate concerns on charges of cheating and forgery. Under an affordable housing scheme, the company had collected Rs 363 crore from 1,497 buyers on the promise of providing them houses at Sector 68 in Gurugram but it failed to deliver and missed multiple deadlines, the ED said. The agency said that Sai Aaina Farms Pvt. Ltd's promoters diverted the home buyers' money to associate concerns of the Mahira Group. Sikandar Singh is promoter, director and shareholder of various companies of the group, it said. The ED said the Supreme Court recently directed Dharam Singh to join the investigation in the case. Vikas Chokker is still absconding, it added. The agency said its probe found that Sai Aaina Farms Pvt. Ltd's promoters siphoned off home buyers' money by booking fake construction expenditure in group entities. The cash generated from the fake purchases was used for personal gains, it said. The directors/promoters also diverted home buyers money to other group entities as loans (outstanding for years) which was used for buying expensive luxury cars, benami properties, expensive wedding of daughter, purchasing personal jewellery and withdrawing cash, the ED said. The agency had conducted searches against the MLA and other accused in the case in July last year, and has attached assets worth Rs 36.5 crore till now.

Though, Stephenson did not any specific growth numbers but said India is a ''focus area'' and ''is one of our fastest-growing countries''. When asked as whether India figures among Airbnb's top 10 markets globally, Stephenson replied in negative. Further he said, ''It should be one of the top 10 markets. It is getting to be a large travel market and we definitely think it can be. That would be the goal.'' Airbnb is investing specifically in India, where a number of tourists travelling to foreign destinations as well as domestic places are on the rise post-pandemic and is supporting them to stay in its range of ''inexpensive homes all the way to luxe homes''. It has witnessed a whopping 75 per cent jump in international group travel bookings from India, where families/friends are going abroad for vacations. ''We have supported over 85,000 jobs and contributed over USD 920 million dollars to the GDP of India just through our Airbnb activities,'' he said, adding, ''When people stay in Airbnb, they support the economy, the economies of the host and community they stay in versus staying in a hotel where the profits can go off to some corporation.'' Airbnb on Wednesday unveiled Icons, a new category of extraordinary experiences hosted by the greatest names in music, film, television, art, sports, and more. Among 11 global such Icons, it has selected the home of Chennai-based home of Bollywood actor Janhvi Kapoor, where she had spent her childhood, for a stay. Karnataka LS polls: In Phase 2, more women than men voted in the state

BENGALURU: More number of women than men voted in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in the state that was held for 14 constituencies on April 26. Though it is a marginal jump, psephologists and election officials say that the trend of increase in women voters has continued, showing that they are deciding for themselves and their family. As per the latest statistics shared by the Election Commission of India, the male voting percentage was 69.48, while that of females 69.65. A total of 1,00,16,921 males voted as against 1,00,20,796 females, a difference of 3,875 voters. Also, more women voted in all the four constituencies of Bangalore - North, Central, South and Rural -- and Dakshina Kannada. During the 2019 polls, the male percentage was marginally higher than females. It was 69.55% for males and 67.65% for females. In 2014, the male to female voting percentage was 68.59 and 65.79, respectively. Well-known political analyst Sandeep Shastry said the trend of inreasing women voters is an extension of their empowerment. He explained that women vote in a different way compared to men. Congress Legacy and Future in Indian Politics: Rajnath Singh's Perspective

Congress Legacy and Future in Indian Politics: Rajnath Singh's Perspective The people of the country are going to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi's wish and wipe out the Congress from the politics of the country in the Lok Sabha elections, BJP leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday. Singh was attending a nomination procession of the BJP candidate for the Northeast Delhi constituency, Manoj Tiwari. The minister said the ''massive'' crowd gathered for Tiwari's nomination assured him that the people have made up their minds to re-elect him from the Northeast Delhi constituency. In the Lok Sabha elections, the people are going to fulfill two of Mahatma Gandhi's wishes including one that India should become a strong nation of the world, he said. ''The country is marching forward with a new vision under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India has become a strong nation of the world and its prestige has soared. Now when India speaks from international platforms, the whole world listens carefully,'' Singh said. He said the other wish of Mahatma Gandhi was that Congress be disbanded after Independence. ''Mahatma Gandhi had said the Congress should be disbanded after Independence. The people of the country are going to fulfil this wish of Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress is going to be wiped out from the politics of the country,'' he said. BJP candidate Harsh Malhotra, who was accompanied by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, also filed his nomination papers after an ''impressive'' procession. Dhami too exuded confidence that the ''huge'' gathering in support of Malhotra indicated that the people were going to elect him from the seat. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister assailed Congress in his address accusing it of appeasement of minorities in the polls. ''The BJP is moving towards the direction of Uniform Civil Code. A bill on UCC was passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly and it has got the President's nod, while the Congress is providing reservation to Muslims in Karnataka,'' Dhami said. The BJP is trying for a clean sweep in Delhi by winning all the seven Lok Sabha constituencies for the third time in a row since 2014. The party is pitted against INDIA block candidates of the AAP and the Congress on all the seven seats. Tiwari, the only sitting BJP MP from Delhi to be fielded again by the party, has a direct contest with Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar in the Northeast Delhi constituency. Malhotra is engaged in electoral battle with AAP's Kuldeep Kumar.

EC releases phase 1, 2 turnout data, Oppn seeks explanation for delay

NEW DELHI: After an 11-day delay since the first phase of voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) finally released the official overall turnout data for the completed phases on Tuesday. According to the ECI, the voter turnout in the first phase was recorded at 66.14 percent, while in the second phase, it slightly increased to 66.71 percent. This turnout was observed across 102 parliamentary constituencies (PCs) in the first phase and 88 PCs in the second phase. In comparison, the turnout in the first phase of the 2019 polls was 69.43 percent. The official data indicates that in the first phase, the voter turnout was 66.22 percent for males, 66.07 percent for females, and 31.32 percent for third-gender voters, resulting in an overall turnout of 66.14 percent. Voting for this phase took place on April 19. In the second phase, which occurred on April 26, the turnout was 66.99 percent for males, 66.42 percent for females, and 23.86 percent for third-gender voters, with an overall turnout of 66.71 percent. Bihar recorded the lowest voter turnout of 49.26 percent in the first phase, while Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest turnout (55.19 percent) in the second phase. The EC highlighted that out of the 21 states and union territories that went to polls in the first phase, 11 recorded a higher turnout of women voters, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. In the second phase, where 13 states and UTs went to polls, six registered a higher women voter turnout, including Assam, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Kerala, and West Bengal. Explaining the delay in announcing the official data on voters turnout, ECI officials clarified that it could only be released after counting the postal ballots and adding them to the total EVM vote count. This includes postal ballots given to service voters, absentee voters, those above 85 years of age, persons with disabilities, those on essential services, and voters on election duty, a senior ECI official said. Congress general secretary in-charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, questioned the delay in a post on X, stating, For the first time, even 11 days after the first phase of the polls and four days after the second phase, the final voter turnout has not been published by the ECI. In the past, the ECI used to publish the final voter turnout immediately after voting or within 24 hours. CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said, Finally, ECI has released the final voter turnout figures for the first 2 phases, which are substantially higher than the initial figures. But why are the absolute numbers of voters in each Parliamentary constituency not provided?.

77-yr-old murderer-turned-saint held from Rishikesh 27 years after crime

NEW DELHI: On the run for over 27 years, the escapades of a murderer-turned-saint finally came to an end on the banks of the Ganga after Delhi Police sleuths apprehended the 77-year-old accused at a ghat in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The incident dates back to 1997 when a man identified as Kishan Lal was killed by his brother-in-law Tillu and one Ramu in Tughlakabad extension in Delhi. Both Tillu and Ramu escaped the scene and were absconding. A local court had later declared them as proclaimed offenders. The case went cold. Recently, the Election Commission issued directions to authorities to trace wanted and absconding accused and parole jumpers in heinous cases in the wake of Lok Sabha elections. A team of Crime Branch was formed and tasked to gather intelligence on such offenders. Then came a tip-off. The name of a proclaimed offender absconding for 27 years in a murder case, Tillu, resurfaced from the reaches of amnesia. The intelligence on Tillu was further developed and after technical analysis, the cops zeroed in on a mobile number, which had no permanent location, and frequently moved between places. Besides, the mobile phone was switched off most of the time. As per location history, it was revealed that the users of the above mobile number was mostly near religious places in Haridwar and Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. The suspect had become a saint and used to visit temples and stay in different dharamshalas across the country, DCP (Crime Branch) Amit Goel said. He said, in 2023, the movement of the accused was traced in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, but he could not be apprehended as he had moved to Jagan Nath Dham in Puri, Odisha. This time the police were able to trace his current location to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. A team was immediately dispatched. Yet, it was a tough ask to identify the accused, as there were no pictures of him in the police records since 1977. The cops conducted field recce in Rishikesh near his last haunted locations; disguising themselves and voluntarily serving in bhandaras near places of worship in the temple town. After working as volunteers for three days, the team identified the proclaimed offender Tillu near Ghat no. 3, Geeta Bhawan, Rishikesh from where he was nabbed, the DCP said. On interrogation, the 77-year-old confessed to the crime, saying, to escape cops, he disguised himself as a saint and wandered in religious sites across the country. He, along with his family, changed their identities and he got himself an Aadhar card under the name, Ramdas.

Fact: BOOM found that the video dates back to 2022 and was taken during the Uttarakhand assembly elections when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and Dhami of buying votes. Tools used: We looked at the viral video closely and found that the envelope with the money carried the name of Shiv Arora, who was said to be a BJP candidate at the time. Taking a cue from this, we ran a search for the incident using Hindi keywords. We also found an X post by the Uttarakhand unit of AAP on February 13, 2022 carrying the same video of Dhami. BJP stands with Matri Shakti: Shah slams Karnataka govt for inaction in Prajwal Revanna case

GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the BJP stands with the Matri Shakti and slammed the Congress government in Karnataka for not acting on the complaints of alleged sexual misconduct against Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Shah said the Karnataka government is answerable for the inaction in the case. The BJPs stand is clear. We stand with Matri Shakti and Nari Shakti. Narendra Modiji has a commitment to the country that any incident of insult to Nari Shakti anywhere will not be tolerated, the home minister said. The Congress is trying to put the blame on us. But I want to ask whose government is it in Karnataka? Its the Congress party government. The fake video must have come to your notice because it was released on time. Why has the Congress not taken actions so far? We dont have to take actions as law and order is a state subject, Shah said. Priyankaji is asking us questions. I want to tell her that instead of questioning me and Modiji, she should ask her Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister what their government is doing. Why is there no probe? We favour a probe, he said. He also said that the JD(S) has a core committee meeting on Tuesday and it would possibly take steps on the matter. He said such incidents have no place anywhere and stringent measures should be taken. This is the BJPs stand and there should not be any confusion about it, he categorically said. Prajwal Revanna suspended from JDS over sex scandal row The home minister said the BJP, which has been running the government at the Centre with full majority for 10 years, did not use the mandate to choke democracy like the Congress did by imposing emergency. We used the mandate to abolish Article 370 and triple talaq, bring laws based on Indian culture by replacing British laws and fight Covid, he said, adding the BJP paved the way for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya following a judgement by the court. Stating that the Congress wants to create confusion, he said he would like to make it clear that the BJP supports reservation for SC, ST and OBC categories of people. He said if there is any party that has done politics on the issue, it is the Congress. In undivided Andhra Pradesh, the Congress gave quota to the Muslims. Because of this, the (scope of) OBC reservation dropped. Then in Karnataka, they brought all Muslims under OBC overnight and gave 4% quota to them. This affected the other backward communities, the home minister said. Stating that the BJP views religion-based quota as unconstitutional, he said the party would abolish such reservation when it grabs power in these states and give justice to people belonging to SC, ST and OBC categories. During the presser, Shahs original and fake videos on reservation were played on a screen. The home minister said the fake video was the result of the Congress frustration. Their frustration has reached such a level that they made fake videos of me and some other BJP leaders and circulated them. Luckily, what I said was recorded and today, a prominent Congress leader is facing criminal offence. From the time Rahul Gandhi took command of the Congress, they are taking politics to the lowest level, Shah said. Meanwhile, he said according to an internal assessment of the BJP after the two phases of polls in 190 seats, the NDA is far ahead of 100 seats. We are heading towards 400 paar. We see a great electoral success in Assam, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand. The BJP is also getting a good response in the south Indian states. This is why, we will surely cross the 400-seat mark, he said.

BJP believes religion-based reservation is unconsitutional: Amit Shah

BJP believes religion-based reservation is unconsitutional: Amit Shah Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Bharatiya Janata Party believes reservation based on religion is unconstitutional. While addressing a press conference in Assam's Guwahati on Tuesday, Amit Shah vowed to end the reservation imposed based on religion in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh if BJP comes to power. He also criticised Congress for creating confusion by spreading lies. BJP believes that reservation based on religion is unconstitutional. Whenever we will come to power in states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, we will ensure justice to SCs, STs and OBCs by ending the reservations imposed based on religion, Amit Shah said while addressing the reporters. Congress wants to create confusion among the public by spreading lies. I want to make one thing clear BJP supports reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs and will always play its role as its protector. This very thing has been stated multiple times by PM Narendra Modi also during his speeches. If any political party has made a dent in the reservation of SCs, STs and OBCs, it's none but the Congress party! he added. Shah further slammed Congress for giving reservations to Muslims without any survey thereby educing the OBC reservation. First of all, they gave reservation to Muslims in united Andhra Pradesh, due to which OBC reservation was reduced. After that, in Karnataka, overnight, without any survey, without determining backwardness, they put all Muslims in the OBC category and reserved 4 per cent quota for them, this has also reduced the reservation for the backward classes, he said. We never look at voters from the perspective of minority and majority. Every person is a citizen of India, he should be treated as such, he added. On the video circulated on social media purportedly showing him advocating to end reservation for SC/ST/OBC, Shah said, Their (Congress) frustration reached to such a level that they are spreading fake videos of me and several other BJP leaders. Chief Ministers, State president and others are also forwarding this fake video. Today a prominent leader of the Congress Party is facing a criminal offence. This action is indicative of their frustration and disappointment. He also hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the matter and accused him of working to take the level of politics to a new low. Ever since Rahul Gandhi took charge of the Congress, he has been working to take the level of politics to a new low. I believe that the attempt to get public support by circulating fake videos is condemnable and should never be done by any major party in Indian politics, Shah said. On the alleged obscene video case involving Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, Shah said that BJP stands with the 'Matr Shakti' while criticising the ruling Congress government in Karnataka for allegedly delaying action. JD(S) is an ally of BJP in Karnataka and Revanna is seeking a fresh term from Hassan as an NDA candidate. The incumbent MP is also the grandson of former PM and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda. BJP's stand is clear that we stand with the 'Matr Shakti' of the country. I want to ask Congress and Priyanka ji who is demanding action, whose government is there? The government is of Congress Party. Why they have not taken any action till now? We do not have to take action on this as this is a law and order issue of the state, state government has to take action on it, he said. We support the investigation and our partner JD(S) has also announced to take action against it. Today there is a meeting of their core committee and steps will be taken, Shah added. Shah also asserted on getting good response in South India and expressed confidence in the BJP crossing 400 seats. You all know that two phases of the 7-phase elections have been completed. After these two phases, as per the internal assessment of our party, BJP and its allies together have crossed 100. And we are moving ahead with great confidence towards our target of crossing 400 with the blessings and support of the people, he said. The BJP is getting a great response across the country including from the South Indian states, namely Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Owing to such a positive response, we believe that we will surely achieve the '400 Paar' feat! We are getting huge electoral success in all the states like Assam, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand etc. Along with this, BJP is also getting very good response in South India, Shah added. On being asked about Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's candidature from Amethi and Raebareli, Shah said, I don't know whether they will contest elections or not but the amount of confusion shows that they lack self-confidence. The situation in Uttar Pradesh is that they have left their traditional seats and ran away. (ANI)

Patanjali Foods Ordered to Explain GST Dues by Tax Authorities

Patanjali Foods Ordered to Explain GST Dues by Tax Authorities Patanjali Foods has been served a show cause notice by the GST intelligence department, asking the company to explain why input tax credit worth Rs 27.46 crore should not be recovered from it. The Yoga guru Ramdev-led Patanjali Ayurved Group firm, which is mainly into the edible oil business, has received the notice from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence, Chandigarh Zonal Unit, according to a regulatory filing made by the company on April 26. ''A show cause notice is received by the company... requiring the company, its officers and authorised signatories to show cause as to why input tax credit amounting to Rs 27,46,14,343 should not be recovered (along with interest), and why penalty should not be imposed...,'' the company said. The department has cited Section 74 and other applicable provisions of the Central Goods and Services Act, 2017 and Uttarakhand State Goods and Services Act, 2017 read with Section 20 of the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) Act, 2017. ''As of now the authority has only issued a show cause notice and the company will be taking all necessary action to defend its case before the authority,'' Patanjali Foods said. ''... expected financial implications cannot be determined till the completion of the proceedings,'' the company added. Last week, Patanjali Foods had said it will evaluate a proposal to acquire the non-food business of promoter group Patanjali Ayurved.
