New Angle Emerges in Amethi as Rahul Gandhi Shifts to Raebareli

In a surprising turn of events, the Congress party's decision to field Rahul Gandhi from the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat has sparked a fresh narrative in Amethi. Smriti Irani, Union Minister and BJP candidate from Amethi, wasted no time in interpreting this move as an implicit admission of defeat by the Congress. Irani, addressing reporters in Amethi, welcomed the decision but not without a hint of triumph. The absence of the Gandhis from Amethi's battleground signifies their acknowledgment of impending defeat. Their reliance on a proxy candidate speaks volumes about their confidence, she remarked. Emphasizing the strides made in Amethi under the Modi government's tenure, Irani questioned the decades-long dominance of the Gandhi family in the region. If significant progress could be achieved in five years, why was Amethi neglected for half a century under Gandhi rule? she queried, assuring continued development under BJP leadership. Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foresight, Irani highlighted his earlier prediction regarding Rahul Gandhi's search for a safer electoral haven post-Kerala polls. PM Modi had forewarned about this shift, indicating Congress's strategic retreat from contested territories, she asserted. The electoral landscape now witnesses Rahul Gandhi contesting Raebareli against BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh, while Irani vies for a renewed mandate from Amethi. The Congress, meanwhile, has nominated Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist from Amethi, echoing the 2019 electoral showdown between Gandhi and Irani. As both constituencies gear up for the fifth phase of polls on May 20, the historical significance of these electoral battlegrounds looms large. From Indira Gandhi to Sonia Gandhi, the Raebareli seat has remained a Congress stronghold, barring a few exceptions, showcasing the enduring legacy of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty in Indian politics. Meanwhile, in Amethi, the spotlight now shifts to Kishori Lal Sharma, who filed his nomination amidst the evolving political landscape. Sharma's entry adds a new dimension to the electoral contest, as he seeks to uphold the Congress legacy in a constituency once synonymous with the Gandhi family. Reflecting on the historical significance of Amethi, the transition from Rajiv Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi underscores the enduring connection between the Nehru-Gandhi lineage and this electoral bastion. However, Irani's victory in 2019 marked a significant departure from this established narrative, signaling a shift in the political winds. With the impending electoral showdown on May 20, both Raebareli and Amethi brace for a contest that transcends mere electoral arithmetic. It's a clash of ideologies, a testament to the shifting sands of Indian politics, and a reaffirmation of the democratic spirit that pulsates through the heartland of Uttar Pradesh. As the campaigns intensify and the rhetoric escalates, all eyes remain glued to these two pivotal constituencies, awaiting the verdict that will shape the political landscape for years to come. Fielding Rahul from Rae Bareli a responsibility not just a legacy: Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday said it has taken a decision to field Rahul Gandhi from Rae Bareli after a lot of deliberation and strategy, and that the constituency is not just a legacy but also a responsibility. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said it is a long election process and there are a few chess moves still left to play. He also justified Priyanka Gandhi Vadra not contesting any election, saying she can reach Parliament by contesting any bypoll, but is currently taking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to counter him on his alleged lies during campaigning. Many people have given different opinions on the news of Rahul Gandhi contesting elections from Rae Bareli. But he is a seasoned player of politics and chess. He makes his moves after careful consideration. The party leadership has taken this decision after a lot of deliberation and strategy, he said. Feroze Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi: Rae Bareli's tryst with Congress Ramesh claimed the decision to filed Rahul has devastated the BJP, its supporters and sycophants. The poor self-proclaimed Chanakya who used to talk about 'traditional seats' is not able to understand what to do now, he said. The Congress leader said Rae Bareli has not only been Sonia Gandhi's seat but also Indira Gandhi's seat. This is not a legacy but a responsibility, a duty, he asserted. He said as far as the Gandhi family's stronghold is concerned, not just Amethi-Rae Bareli, the entire country from north to south is the stronghold of the Gandhi family. Rahul Gandhi, he said, has become an MP three times from Uttar Pradesh and once from Kerala, ut why couldn't Modiji muster the courage to contest elections below Vindhyachal. One more thing is clear that the Congress family is the family of expectations and aspirations of lakhs of workers. An ordinary worker of Congress is superior to the big ones. Yesterday, a prominent journalist was sarcastically saying to a worker of Amethi that 'when will your turn come to get a ticket'? Look, it has come! An ordinary worker of Congress will break both the illusion and arrogance of the BJP in Amethi, Ramesh said justifying fielding of Congress workers Kishori Lal Sharma. Priyanka ji is campaigning vigorously and is alone shutting up Narendra Modi by answering his every lie with the truth. That is why it was necessary that she should not be limited to her constituency only. Priyanka ji will reach Parliament by contesting any by-election, he said. Ramesh said today Smriti Irani's only identity is that she contests elections from Amethi against Rahul Gandhi. Now Smriti Irani has lost that fame too. Now instead of making useless statements, she should answer about local development, the closed hospitals, steel plant and IIIT - that needs to be answered, he said. Delhi High Court Grants AAP's Manish Sisodia Weekly Visits to Ailing Wife During ED, CBI Custody

In a recent development, the Delhi High Court has given permission to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia to visit his unwell wife once a week while he remains in custody under the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision came following Sisodia's plea, challenging the denial of bail by a trial court in the excise policy case. The matter has been postponed until May 8, 2024. Sisodia, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, took the matter to court after his bail petitions were rejected by the Rouse Avenue Court on April 30. The judge stated that Sisodia's repeated applications for bail, some of which were deemed frivolous, were contributing to unnecessary delays in the case proceedings. The charges against Sisodia and other implicated individuals stem from alleged irregularities in the modification of the excise policy. Authorities claim that undue benefits were given to license holders, fees were waived or reduced without proper authorization, and false entries were made to conceal these actions. Sisodia has been in custody since February 26, 2023, first arrested by the CBI and subsequently by the ED. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and BRS Leader K Kavitha were also detained in connection with the same case. According to investigations, approximately Rs 144.36 crore was allegedly lost to the state exchequer due to these irregularities, including the refund of earnest money deposits and waivers on license fees without legal provisions, supposedly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The court will continue to review the case as it progresses, ensuring fair proceedings while considering the complexities involved. Why Rahul Gandhi Chose Rae Bareli for His Campaign

Rahul Gandhi's decision to run for office in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli constituency has brought fresh attention to a long-standing connection between the Gandhi family and this area. The roots of this relationship trace back to 1952 when Feroze Gandhi, Rahul's grandfather, first represented Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha. Over the years, this bond has only grown stronger, particularly under the leadership of his grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who won the seat in 1967, 1971, and 1980. Since then, it has been kept within the family or close allies. The announcement of Rahul Gandhi's candidacy in Rae Bareli not only underscores the sentimental significance of the region but also signals the end of an era, with Sonia Gandhi opting out of the race due to health concerns. This decision marks a transition for the Gandhi family's longstanding association with Rae Bareli. Adding to the historical backdrop is the fact that in 1980, Indira Gandhi contested from both Rae Bareli and Medak in undivided Andhra Pradesh, ultimately choosing to represent Medak. Arun Nehru, a prominent figure in Rajiv Gandhi's government, later won the Rae Bareli seat in a bypoll and retained it in 1984. Rae Bareli's Political Legacy Rae Bareli boasts a storied political legacy, with figures like Arun Nehru, Sheila Kaul, and Satish Sharma, all closely aligned with the Gandhi family, having represented the constituency in the past. Even during periods when the Congress party did not hold the seat, the ties with the Gandhi family remained unbroken. From Arun Nehru, who played a pivotal role in Rajiv Gandhi's administration, to Sheila Kaul, Indira Gandhi's aunt, Rae Bareli has stood as a stronghold of the Congress party. Sea of crowd turns up for Dharmendra Pradhans nomination

SAMBALPUR: Amidst a sea of cheering supporters, Union Minister and BJPs candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat Dharmendra Pradhan embarked on a massive roadshow to file his nomination papers here on Thursday. Pradhans convoy, adorned with party banners and saffron flags, was surrounded by thousands of enthusiastic locals and party workers who shouted slogans like Abki bar, 400 par and Ethara darkar BJP sarkar. As thousands of people rallied in support of the union minister, it was evident that Pradhan through his rigorous and proactive campaigning in the last few months, had managed to find a place in the heart of voters, earning him a formidable reputation of being a dynamic and effective leader. Before the roadshow, Pradhan visited the Hanuman temple at Green Park and also offered prayers to Goddess Samaleswari. Accompanied by BJP candidates from Sambalpur and Rengali Assembly seats Jay Narayan Mishra and Nauri Naik, he led the huge rally from Samaleswari temple as local artistes performed in the front. The rally showcased the art, culture and tradition of Sambalpur. The procession traversed through Ramjigudi, Balibandha, Kunjelpada, Jharduapada, Nandpada, Daleipada and Municipality chowk before reaching the district collectors office. After reaching the collectorate, Pradhan submitted his nomination papers to the returning officer in presence of four proposers. Addressing the crowd after his nomination, Pradhan said, With the blessings of Lord Jagannath and Maa Samaleswari, I feel fortunate to have been able to file my nomination as the BJP candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat. The participation of such a massive number of people in the roadshow has boosted my confidence. He said considering the current political atmosphere in Odisha, this roadshow has shown the signs of change. During the 24 years of BJDs rule, people have been deprived of basic facilities. There is public outrage against the local government over issues like drinking water, education, health and employment. Narendra Modi will be the prime minister of the country for the third time. There will be an alternate government in Odisha which will bring change, and protect the identity of Odia people. With Maa Samaleis blessings, the BJP will win more than 400 seats in the country and form the government in Odisha this time, he said. Entire Odisha is my family and Sambalpur is my home. I am a candidate from Sambalpur and I will share its happiness and sorrow. I will always be at the forefront to serve Odisha and Sambalpur, Pradhan added.

Odisha: Pranab Prakash Dass mom to fight from Korei as BJD candidate

BHUBANESWAR: Putting an end to speculations, BJD on Thursday announced Sandhyarani Das, mother of party organisational secretary Pranab Prakash Das, as its candidate from Korei Assembly seat in Jajpur district. Sandhyarani replaces Ashok Kumar Bal, the partys sitting MLA from the constituency. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the list of candidates for the last three Assembly seats including much-awaited Korei. The party has changed the candidate for Deogarh Assembly seat by replacing Arundhati Devi, wife of Sambalpur MP Nitesh Ganga Deb of BJP, with Romancha Ranjan Biswal who had contested the 2019 elections unsuccessfully. The chief minister also announced Sabitri Pradhan as the partys candidate from Khandapada Assembly seat overlooking the claim of former MLA Anubhav Patnaik. Similarly, BJD has given ticket to Sukanta Nayak from Nilgiri Assembly seat. Nayak has consecutively won from the seat in 2014 and 2019 on BJD and BJP tickets respectively. Nayak had resigned from the BJP and rejoined BJD recently. The candidature of Sandhyarani from Korei is being seen as a back-up plan for Das who is BJDs candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat where he is pitted against BJP heavyweight and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. If Das fails to win, he can always get himself elected from Korei. The seat in Jajpur district is a family stronghold of Das and represented by his father Ashok Das five times. BJDs Khandapada candidate Sabitri is the chairperson of Bhapur block. The regional party had to change its candidate from the seat as sitting MLA, Soumya Ranjan Patnaik was expelled from the party. Meanwhile, announcement of candidates from Khandapada and Nilgiri has sparked resentment. Former MLA Anubhav Patnaik, a strong contender for a ticket this time from the seat, has resigned in protest. He is set to file his nomination as an Independent candidate on Friday. In his resignation letter to the chief minister, the former MLA said his father Arun Patnaik was with Biju Patnaik since 1985 and mother Bijaylaxmi Patnaik, a two-time MLA from the seat had worked to strengthen the partys organisation in the constituency. Patnaik said he had worked to strengthen organisation in the constituency. Santosh Khatua, the BJD candidate from Nilgiri in the 2019 also resigned from the party after his claim for a ticket was ignored.

Battle of turncoats in Kendrapara Assembly seat in Odisha

KENDRAPARA: The Kendrapara Assembly constituency is witnessing an interesting battle among three turncoats who switched sides recently to enter the poll arena. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has fielded former Congress MLA and ex-minister Ganeswar Behera who till last month was in the grand old party. The Congress similarly has placed its faith in Sipra Mallick, a former MLA who recently quit BJD after Ganeswar joined the ruling party. The BJP too has fielded Zilla Parishad chairperson Gitanjali Sethi who resigned from BJD last week. The contest between Sipra and Ganeswar is a battle of old rivals. In 2014, Sipra as a BJD candidate defeated Congress Ganeswar from Kendrapara Assembly seat. In 1995, Ganeswar had fought the election as a Congress candidate and defeated Sipra of the Janata Dal from Pattamundai seat. Niranjan Das, a retired school teacher of Kendrapara, said the three candidates switched sides after deserting their parent parties. This has led to discontentment among workers of all the three major political parties - the Congress, BJD and BJP. In BJP, a section of workers are reportedly unhappy after the saffron party nominated Gitanjali as its candidate from the SC-reserved seat. BJP insiders said though many senior party leaders like Kalpana Mallick and Abhimanyu Gochhayat were in the ticket race, the BJP leadership ignored them and fielded a parachute leader. The surprise move has left many party workers at the grassroots level dejected. However, Gitanjali claimed people are determined to vote for BJP in the upcoming election. Earlier, Kendrapara was not connected with rail. The BJP government at the Centre connected the coastal district with railway lines. Nowadays, both passenger and goods trains are running in the district. I am confident that the BJP will emerge victorious in Kendrapara seat, she added. President of the district unit of BJD Dhiren Sahoo said Ganeswar is a senior leader. BJD roped him with an intention to win the Assembly seat easily. Some BJD leaders were opposing his candidature. But we pacified them at a party meeting held on Wednesday. Now all BJD leaders and supporters are working unitedly to ensure Ganeswars victory, he said. Sipra claimed the BJD is a divided house in Kendrapara after it decided to field Ganeswar from the seat. People are disenchanted with both BJD and BJP. This time, they will vote for the Congress, she added. In 2019 elections, the BJD had won all the six Assembly seats in the district.

Odisha: BJP grapples with independent acts in Berhampur LS seat

BERHAMPUR: Election to the Berhampur Lok Sabha constituency barely a fortnight away, disgruntled aspirants could queer the pitch for BJP candidates in the Assembly segments but the saffron party is putting up a united face ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit. Denied tickets after entry of imports from other parties, some of the aspirants who worked for the party for years have now filed nominations as Independent posing a hurdle for the candidates. Siba Shankar Dash, a BJP rebel, has filed nomination for Berhampur segment as an Independent. Dash started his political career with the BJD and became the first mayor of Berhampur Municipal Corporation. However, after the BJD denied a ticket to him in the general election in 2014, he switched to the BJP and contested unsuccessfully. He was an aspirant in 2019 too but the saffron party did not nominate him. Dash fought the election as an Independent again. Charged in several criminal cases, he spent some time in jail and was released on bail last year. Since then, he involved himself in BJPs activities hoping to get the party ticket but in vain. Dejected, Dash is now contesting as an Independent candidate. Since he enjoys a good following, the BJP tried to persuade him against fighting as an Independent but without any result. Apart from Dash, Kanhu Charan Pati was a strong contender for the BJP ticket too but the party selected K Anil Kumar who joined after resigning from the BJD. Not only Berhampur, the BJP faces similar crisis at Digapahandi, Aska, Kabisuryanagar, Polsara, Sorada and Chhatrapur. Faced with dissidence, the party has become proactive and is trying to present a united front. Except for Dash of Berhampur, the dejected aspirants in other segments are now seen campaigning for the party candidates. It is a good sign that the party workers have adopted a united stance after the visit of JP Nadda and before the visit of PM Narendra Modi to Berhampur, said a party leader. The PM is scheduled to address a meeting in Berhampur on May 6. The differences have been put behind in the interest of the party and BJP leaders are trying to make the meeting a grand success, said Dr Subash Sahu, Ganjam district unit president of BJP.

BJD faces tough contest against BJPs Kulesika in Laxmipur Assembly seat

JEYPORE: The Laxmipur Assembly constituency appears poised for a fierce electoral battle, with the ruling Biju Janata Dal facing a challenge from former MLA and current BJP candidate, Kailash Kulesika. Kulesikas growing influence in the constituency has sent ripples of concern through the BJD camp. In the 2019 elections, Kulesika, then representing the Congress, secured 44,982 (33.85 pc) votes, narrowly losing to BJDs Prabhu Jani who got 45,211 (34.02 pc) votes. Despite financial constraints and a strong BJD presence in the state, Kulesikas organisational groundwork in Congress party strengthened his support base, particularly in the ST constituency. Seeking a brighter political future, Kulesika switched allegiance to the BJD in 2022, lured by the promise of a ticket for the 2024 elections. However, last-minute exclusion from the candidate list prompted his defection to the BJP, a move that has altered the electoral equations in the region. Kulesikas grassroots networks, particularly in Bandhugaon, Narayanpatana, Dasmantpur, and Laxmipur blocks, coupled with his experience and organisational prowess, have made him a strong candidate of the BJP. Moreover, there is palpable discontent among BJD supporters over the partys decision to overlook Kulesika, making it challenging for Prabhu Jani to secure their backing. The magnitude of Kulesikas influence was evident during his nomination filing roadshow in Koraput, where over 10,000 supporters from distant areas rallied in solidarity with the BJP candidate. Political analysts believe that countering Kulesikas momentum will be no easy task for the BJD, especially given his insider knowledge of the partys strategies for the constituency. BJD supporters, however, remain optimistic, citing the scheduled visit of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to Rayagada on May 4 as a potential game-changer. They believe that the CMs presence will help mitigate Kulesikas influence and bolster support for Prabhu Janis candidacy.
