Mayawati: BSP government maintained law and order in UP without need for bulldozers

Mayawati: BSP government maintained law and order in UP without need for bulldozers Taking a dig at her political opponents over law and order in Uttar Pradesh, BSP supremo Mayawati Thursday claimed she did not require a bulldozer like the present BJP government to maintain rule of law in the state when she was in power. ''When the BSP was in power in Uttar Pradesh, we did not allow Hindu-Muslim riots to take place. Respect was given to all religious groups, their lives, properties and religious beliefs. ''Have you heard of riots taking place during my governments in Uttar Pradesh. Whichever party was in power here, be it the Samajwadi Party, the Congress or the present BJP, riots have taken place,'' the BSP president said, addressing an election rally at the Christian College ground here. Mayawati also said the BSP might spring a surprise to those who are alleging that the party has fielded candidates only to help others win or lose in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Speaking on the law and order issue, she said, ''Earlier during the festival time, be it of Hindus or Muslims, incidents used to take place, but not during my government.'' Mayawati also recalled how there was absolute peace in UP when the Ayodhya verdict was delivered by the high court during her government. ''Schools, colleges and offices were closed throughout the country barring UP and not even a small incident took place. We ensured the safety and security of the people belonging to all religions and castes as well as the safety of the lives and properties of all,'' she said. The Allahabad High Court verdict was pronounced on September 30, 2010 when Mayawati was the chief minister of the state. ''Whenever there were festivals, some incident used to take place but you have seen the law and order during my tenure. There was rule of law for which we did not require bulldozers like the present BJP government. We had established the rule of law through legal means,'' she added. The Yogi Adityanath government has faced flak for the use of bulldozers to raze the houses of the ''criminals'' in the state. Referring to the three candidates of her party in Mainpuri, Etah and Firozabad, she said they have been fielded ''not to help anyone win or lose but to win themselves with record votes''. ''The opponents are saying during their campaign here in Mainpuri that the BSP (candidate) will make others win or lose but will not win themselves. But the exact opposite might happen. Those who are saying this might themselves get the second or third spot,'' she asserted. The BSP president also reiterated that during the past few years, there have been exploitation and oppression in the garb of Hindutva because of feeling of hatred, specially with Muslims, which will be stopped when the BSP comes to power as she had done during her government in UP by paying attention to all sections of the society. If voted to power at the Centre, the BSP will do solid work like it did in UP during its government. Parties like the Congress and the BJP and its supporting parties have to be stopped from coming to power, she said. ''The wrong policies of these parties and their working styles have been tried by you. There is a vast difference between what they say and what they do. ''They are using every tactic to come back to power. The people have to remain alert,'' she said, adding that these parties should not be voted back to power in their own interest and in the interest of the state and the country. Mayawati sought the support for her party candidates -- Shiv Prasad Yadav from Mainpuri, Mohd Irfan from Etah and Chaudhary Bashir from Firozabad. Polling in Mainpuri, Etah and Firozabad is slated on May 7 in the third phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Ex-MP Dhananjay Singh Released on Bail from Bareilly Jail

Ex-MP Dhananjay Singh Released on Bail from Bareilly Jail Former MP Dhananjay Singh was on Wednesday released from Bareilly jail after he was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court last week. The MP-MLA court in Jaunpur on March 6, sentenced Singh and his associate Santosh Vikram to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in a 2020 kidnapping and extortion case. The former MP was lodged in Jaunpur district jail and was later shifted to Bareilly jail. Allahabad High Court granted bail to Singh on Saturday but refused his plea to suspend or stay a seven-year jail sentence passed by the district court. Singh and his associate Santosh Vikram were found guilty by the district court for their involvement in the kidnapping and extortion of Namami Gange project manager Abhinav Singhal. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Singh said that a fake case was lodged against him in 2020 for exposing corruption in the Namami Gange project in Jaunpur district. Singh has been released on bail but he cannot contest elections due to the conviction in the district court. Singh's wife Srikala Reddy is contesting from Jaunpur parliamentary constituency as a candidate of the Bahujan Samaj Party. In Jaunpur, the BJP has fielded former Maharashtra minister Kripa Shankar Singh, while the SP has fielded Babu Singh Kushwaha, a former BSP minister accused in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam. Dhananjay Singh, who was the BSP MP from Jaunpur between 2009-2014, said that after being released from the jail he will visit Jaunpur. He extended best wishes to his wife for the Lok Sabha elections. Elections in Jaunpur will be held on May 25 in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha polls.

There is no anti-incumbency against BJD: Santrupt Misra

Former CEO of Birla Carbon and HR head of Aditya Birla Group Santrupt Misra has joined BJD after spending 28 years in the corporate world. He has been fielded by BJD from the prestigious Cuttack Lok Sabha constituency by replacing six-time MP Bhartruhari Mahtab. Hemant Kumar Rout speaks to him about his and the partys prospects, and his aspirations for the constituency and its people. From the corporate world to political pitch, the transition must have been difficult for you. Did you approach BJD or the party approached you? It is not about someone approaching the other. It is a courtship that grew over a period of time. I had interacted with some people in the government on many occasions and shared many ideas. The government had offered me an opportunity in 2018 which I could not take up due to some personal reasons. And then when I decided to come to public life, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during an interaction encouraged me to join the party. The more I saw him the more I liked the man. The common ground was that he was about Odisha and I was about Odisha. However, my tryst with BJD grew after I joined the party. I chose BJD mostly for three reasons - personality of the chief minister, holistic development taken place in the state during his tenure and my intention to return to Odisha to work for my people with the experience I have acquired over the years. You belong to Puri. You could have opted for the Puri constituency. Why did you choose Cuttack? People there are saying you are an outsider. Believe me, nobody asked me the constituency I want to contest from. I did not even know that I would fight the Lok Sabha election. Thats why I think it is destiny. The party asked me to contest and I accepted it. Simply because it is an old and prestigious seat. I studied at Cuttack and I feel I am a true Katakia. Puri would have the benefit of saying my village and Cuttack is a benefit of saying where I grew up. Those who did not know my background were tagging me as an outsider. But now nobody says it. I am well accepted across the constituency. What are the major issues you have identified in Cuttack? How would you solve those issues? Skill development, employment, infrastructure, expansion of economy and tourism promotion are some of the issues that need to be addressed properly. There are a lot of young people who are in search of employment. For that, we must focus on acquiring skills. We have to make our young generation employable with the right skills. Another major issue is how to expand the economy with alternative demand creation. For example: tourism. We are going to Banaras, Haridwar and Allahabad. Can we not have people from other states at Kantilo, Dhabaleswar and other such pilgrim centres? There are places in Baramba-Narasinghpur which were visited by Buddhist monk Hiuen Tsang. Guru Nanak Dev had visited the Gurudwara near Jobra. These areas can be packaged and propagated. If our tourism gets expanded, we can also generate employment. We can have a filigree jewellery market like the cluster of shops in Dubai. We can globalise our heritage. Cuttack was always a centre of learning. We have plans for building some educational institutes of global standards so that people from other countries would love to come and study. An international institute of designing or an institute in space craft can be thought of. In Odisha, we only know about big industries. Growth of MSMEs is also one of my priority areas for Cuttack. Why would people of Cuttack vote for Santrupt Misra? For that, I am preparing a manifesto for Cuttack. This is being prepared after my meetings with people from different parts and different segments. I am trying to address most of the issues and concerns to ensure that Cuttack becomes a model constituency in the country. Is there anti-incumbency in Odisha? I have visited many places and have realised that there is no anti-incumbency against BJD. But obviously whenever you have people long representing a position, it affects. You may have done nine things for people and if you failed to do one thing, they will forget the nine things done and hold you responsible for the one thing you could not do. One thing I must say, the legitimacy of BJD has not eroded in any manner.

Supreme Court Issues Notice on Plea for MSP Fixation for Alternative Crops

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Centre, Punjab, and Haryana governments in response to a plea seeking the fixation of minimum support price (MSP) for alternative crops grown by farmers. The plea also seeks periodic increases in MSP and government procurement of these crops. A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan directed the Centre, along with the States of Punjab and Haryana, pollution control boards, agricultural universities, and ICAR to respond to the petition filed by advocate Charanpal Singh Bagri. The bench scheduled the matter for hearing in the second week of July. The petition argues for setting MSP for alternative crops higher than the MSP for paddy. Bagri highlighted the challenges faced by farmers in Punjab and Haryana due to the current focus on wheat and paddy, which have government-set MSPs and are procured by the government. He pointed out that the cultivation of paddy primarily leads to the rapid depletion of underground drinking water, air pollution due to stubble burning, and financial burdens on the State for storing excess paddy during the season. Bagri emphasized the need for providing farmers with new crop options suitable for their geographical location and soil quality, along with fixing MSPs for each crop. The petition also called for agricultural universities to introduce new varieties of seeds for pulses and other crops imported from foreign countries.Bagri suggested that the MSPs should be set at higher rates, and farmers should be required to use a limited quantity of pesticides to produce organic crops. The absence of MSPs and government procurement, Bagri argued, has led to a dire situation for farmers, many of whom feel compelled to resort to suicide. Setback for Dhananjay Singh as Allahabad High Court refuses to postpone the seven-year sentence

Setback for Dhananjay Singh as Allahabad High Court refuses to postpone the seven-year sentence Former MP and muscleman Dhananjay Singh has received a setback from Allahabad High Court as the court has refused to postpone the seven-year sentence given to Dhananjay Singh by Jaunpur Special Court in the kidnapping case of Namami Gange Project Manager, Abhinav Singhal. Due to the non-stay of sentence, Dhananjay Singh will not be able to contest the Lok Sabha elections. He has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for demanding extortion. He was lodged in Jaunpur jail since the announcement of the sentence. He was transferred to Bareilly jail on Saturday. Modi Alleges Rajiv Gandhi Shielded Family Wealth via Inheritance Tax Abolishment, Congress Refutes

Modi Alleges Rajiv Gandhi Shielded Family Wealth via Inheritance Tax Abolishment, Congress Refutes Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday alleged that former PM Rajiv Gandhi had abolished inheritance tax in 1985 after his mother Indira Gandhi's death to save her wealth from going to the government, as he continued his relentless attack on the Congress over wealth redistribution and inheritance tax. Modi also claimed at a poll rally in Morena in Madhya Pradesh that after benefitting from the abolition of estate duty--a levy imposed on inherited movable and immovable assets, the Congress now wants to bring back the levy. As the political slugfest over the issue of inheritance tax escalated on the eve of the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress hit back at Modi, calling his remarks on Rajiv Gandhi ''lies''. The opposition party also cited the then finance minister V P Singh's budget speech in 1985 on scrapping of inheritance tax. If the Congress comes to power, it will snatch more than half of the earnings of the people through inheritance tax, Modi claimed. A day after Rahul Gandhi's remark that those who call themselves ''deshbhakt'' are scared of the 'X-ray' of caste census, Modi also said the Congress wants to confiscate people's jewellery and small savings by conducting an X-ray of their properties and valuables. ''Listen with your ears wide open about the sins that the Congress has committed. I want to put forth an interesting fact. When sister Indira Gandhi passed away, there was a law by virtue of which half portion of the wealth used to go to the government. There was a talk then that Indiraji willed her wealth in her son Rajiv Gandhi's name,'' the prime minister said. ''To save the money going to the government, the then PM Rajiv Gandhi abolished the inheritance tax.'' The Congress wants to reinforce the tax more powerfully now after its four generations reaped benefit of the wealth passed on to them, he said. An adviser to the opposition party's 'shehzada' (referring to Rahul Gandhi) has now suggested imposition of inheritance tax, he said. Modi on Wednesday seized upon Congress leader Sam Pitroda's remarks on inheritance tax to step up the ruling BJP's attack on the issue of ''wealth redistribution''. The Congress later distanced itself from the comments of the US-based president of its overseas wing and asserted that it has no plan to introduce such a tax. Modi said that as long as the BJP is there, it will not allow any designs like imposition of inheritance tax to succeed. ''The wealth that you have accumulated by working hard and enduring hardships will be looted from you once a Congress-led government is formed. ''Modi is standing as a wall between you and the Congress' plan to loot you,'' Modi said. Hitting back at the prime minister, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on X, ''Yesterday the PM claimed that @INCIndia wanted to impose an Inheritance Tax. Once it became clear that it was actually the BJP that has been propagating an Inheritance Tax, he switched lanes.'' ''Every time he opens his mouth to speak, the Prime Minister provides fresh evidence of his meanness, pettiness, and his steadfast adherence to lies. ''Once again, his lies stand unravelled. Here is the paragraph from then Finance Minister VP Singhs budget speech of March 16, 1985, which proposed the abolition of estate duty. Paragraph 88 of the speech states the reasons clearly,'' Ramesh said, and shared an excerpt from the speech. ''As both wealth-tax and estate duty laws apply to the property of a person, the former applying to his property before death and the latter after his death, the existence of two separate laws with reference to the same property amounts to procedural harassment to the taxpayers and the heirs of the deceased who have to comply with the provisions of two different laws,'' Singh had said, according to the excerpt of his speech shared by Ramesh. ''Having considered the relative merits of the two taxes, I am of the view that estate duty has not achieved the twin objectives with which it was introduced, namely, to reduce unequal distribution of wealth and assist the States in financing their development schemes,'' Singh had said. While the yield from estate duty is only about Rs 20 crore, its cost of administration is relatively high, he had noted. ''I, therefore, propose to abolish the levy of estate duty in respect of estates passing on after deaths occurring on or after 16th March, 1985. I will come forward in due course with suitable legislation for this purpose,'' the then finance minister said. In his post, Ramesh said incidentally, Indira Gandhi gave away her ancestral property in Allahabad way back in 1970 to the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund. Echoing his party colleague's sentiments, Congress leader P Chidambaram claimed that the ''manufactured'' controversies on ''redistribution of wealth'' and inheritance tax showed that fear has gripped the BJP, which has fallen back on distortion, falsehoods and abuse'' as 'Modi ki Guarantee' has vanished without a trace. BSP president Mayawati, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, had a different take on Pitrodas remarks, saying it has got less to do with the welfare of the poor and more with diverting attention from the failure of the Congress' 'garibi hatao' campaign.

Legendary Actor Amitabh Bachchan Pays Tribute to Lata Mangeshkar with Poignant Marathi Poem

Legendary Actor Amitabh Bachchan Pays Tribute to Lata Mangeshkar with Poignant Marathi Poem Megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Wednesday recited a Marathi poem in the memory of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, whom he remembered as ''Goddess Saraswati personified'', at an event here. Bachchan said he co-wrote the poem titled ''Aakasha Chi Sawri'' or ''Shadow of the Sky'' (in English) with the help of a friend. ''We call Lord Brahma the sky and the Goddess Saraswati sits next to Lord Brahma. Lata Mangeshkar was Goddess Saraswati personified. She is sitting under the shadow of Lord Brahma. That's how the title of the poem came to be 'Aakasha Chi Sawri','' the 81-year-old said. On Wednesday, Bachchan became the third recipient of the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Asha Bhosle. The Mangeshkar family and the trust instituted the award in the memory of Lata Mangeshkar after the eldest of the five Mangeshkar siblings died in 2022 following multiple organ failure. Allahabad-born Bachchan has been based out of Mumbai for decades now and he said he is finally trying to learn Marathi, the local language, in his twilight years. The actor, who will next be seen in the multilingual sci-fi drama ''Kalki 2898 AD'', recalled how he was once rebuked by an audience member for addressing a gathering in Hindi instead of Marathi. ''I remember I folded my hands in apology and said 'Me Marathi sheekhat aahe' (I'm learning Marathi') and saved myself. This incident happened 10-12 years ago and I haven't learnt Marathi till now. Earlier, I didn't have the time. So, I'm trying to learn Marathi in my old age as I'm getting some time now,'' he added. Bachchan said Lata Mangeshkar always showered her love and affection on him as well as his family. ''The respect she bestowed us with is indescribable. I don't know what it was but there was so much love whenever she would meet me or the members of my family.'' It was Lata Mangeshkar who opened the gates for Bachchan to start performing at international shows, he said. ''In 1981, I was in New York and a friend of mine said 'Lata ji was here too and she wants to meet you'. When I met her, she told me 'I am set to perform at the Felt Forum stage at the Madison Square Garden and I want you to do a 2-minute presentation before me. Presenting for Lata ji! I couldn't wrap my head around it, but since she was Lata Mangeshkar, I agreed. ''As I was leaving, she said 'Amitabh ji, I have heard you have sung a song in one of your films.' I told her it was nothing, it was just like one of those teasing songs that are sung at weddings. Our director had heard the song on Holi and said we will put it in the film,'' he recounted. The song was the popular track ''Mere Angne Mein'' from ''Laawaris'', the 1981 movie directed by Prakash Mehra. Somehow, the actor said, he performed ''Mere Angne Mein'' on the stage in New York with ''some difficulty''. ''Some in the audience started clapping, some started dancing. When that friend of mine saw all that, he said: 'You will now perform at such programmes every year across different countries'. ''And, that's how I started performing on international tours and the credit of this goes to Lata ji...,'' the actor said, adding he often got a chance to perform on stage with Lata Mangeshkar. Bachchan was presented with the award by singer Usha Mangeshkar, the third eldest Mangeshkar sibling. Earlier, veteran singer Asha Bhosle, the second Mangeshkar sibling, was supposed to give away the trophies but gave the event a miss as she is unwell. The award, known as the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar, is given every year to an individual who has made a path-breaking contribution towards the nation, its people and society. Prime Minister Modi was its first recipient in 2022, followed by Asha Bhosle in 2023. The function was presided over by music composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar, the youngest Mangeshkar sibling.

Mayawati pitches for statehood to west UP and HC bench in Meerut

NEW DELHI: Reiterating her promise to carve out a separate state comprising districts of western Uttar Pradesh, BSP chief Mayawati said that she would make all out efforts to get a bench of Allahabad High Court established in Meerut if voted to power. The central government has not been paying attention to it, but when we come to power at the Centre, we will take positive steps, Mayawati said. Addressing an election rally in support of her party nominee Devvrat Tyagi from Meerut, the BSP chief attacked both the Congress and BJP and targeted the Samajwadi Party (SP) on the issue of reservation, alleging the SP did not want people belonging to SC/ST communities to get quota benefits. Referring to a resolution for a separate state passed during her regime in UP, the BSP chief claimed that her party had been of the view that the western region should be made a separate state for better development. We had a resolution passed by the state assembly and sent to the central government, but they did not act on it, she said. Mayawati alleged that the quota facility meant for the Dalits, Adivasis (STs), and OBCs in government jobs had not been filled in the country for years, and the quota in promotions for the SCs/STs was also made ineffective. I want to remind the members of the SCs/STs that when the SP was in power in Uttar Pradesh, it ended reservation in promotions. Will the members of these sections give even a single vote to them and waste it on a party bent upon finishing their reservation? The SP does not want SC/ST people to get full benefits of reservation, she said. She also warned against the saam, daam, dand, bhed policies allegedly being adopted by these parties to attain power. Seeking votes for her party nominee from Meerut, Mayawati said that unlike the past elections, when her party fielded Muslim candidates, it has this time given a ticket to Devvrat Tyagi.
