No Gandhi Candidate to Contest Amethi for First Time in 25 Years

No Gandhi Candidate to Contest Amethi for First Time in 25 Years Uttar Pradesh's Amethi has long been synonymous with the Gandhis and it would be the first time in 25 years that a Gandhi family member will not be contesting election from the Lok Sabha seat. Considered a citadel of the Gandhi family since its creation as a constituency in 1967, Amethi has been represented by a Gandhi family member for about 31 years since then. The Congress fortress was breached in the last general election in 2019 when BJP's Smriti Irani beat Rahul Gandhi by more than 55,000 votes. This time, Rahul Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha election from the Rae Bareli seat, while Kishori Lal Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhi family, has been fielded from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat. Sharma was the key person who looked after the two prestigious constituencies on behalf of the Gandhis. The last time a non-Gandhi was in the fray from the constituency was in 1998, when Satish Sharma, a close aide of Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, contested the polls but lost to the BJP's Sanjaya Sinh. Sonia Gandhi reclaimed the seat in 1999 routing Singh by over 3 lakh votes. In 2004, Sonia shifted to the adjacent Rae Bareli constituency to make way for her son Rahul Gandhi. Rahul won the constituency for three consecutive terms in 2004, 2009 and 2014. Contesting for the fourth time in 2019, he lost to Smriti Irani, who hit the headlines as a 'giant killer'. Amethi is one of the 80 parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh and comprises five assembly segments Tiloi, Salon, Jagdishpur, Gauriganj, and Amethi. Over the past few years, the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Bahujan Samaj Party have emerged as the three main players in the constituency. Its first Member of Parliament was Vidya Dhar Bajpai of the Congress who was elected in 1967 and held the seat in the next election in 1971. In the 1977 election, Ravindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party became an MP from the seat defeating former prime minister Indira Gandhi's younger son Sanjay Gandhi. Sanjay Gandhi had his electoral revenge three years later when he defeated Singh in the 1980 general election. Later that year, Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash and the seat fell vacant. In the consequent by-election held in 1981, Sanjay's brother Rajiv Gandhi scored a landslide victory from the seat, defeating his closest rival by more than 2 lakh votes. Rajiv Gandhi went on to represent this constituency until 1991 when he was assassinated by the militant group LTTE. The subsequent by-election held the same year was won by Satish Sharma, a close aide of Rajiv Gandhi and later Sonia Gandhi. Sharma was re-elected in 1996 but lost to BJP's Sanjaya Sinh in 1998. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Irani won the Amethi seat with a margin of over 55,000 votes, polling 4,68,514 votes. Rahul Gandhi got 4,13,394 votes. In 2014, Rahul Gandhi won the Amethi seat for the third time in a row, polling 4,08,651 votes to Irani's 3,00,748 votes. BSP candidate Dharmendra Pratap Singh came third with 57,716 votes and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Dr Kumar Vishwas was in fourth position with 25,527 votes. The Amethi and Rae Bareli seats will go to polls on May 20 in the fifth of the seven-phase general election. Ending days of suspense, the party announced the candidates from the two seats early Friday. Deliberations had been on in the party since Thursday over the names of the contenders for the two seats. The BJP had on Thursday announced Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Rae Bareli. He had lost to Sonia Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Rahul Gandhi to Contest Lok Sabha Elections from Rae Bareli, Ally Kuldeep Rai Sharma from Amethi

Rahul Gandhi to Contest Lok Sabha Elections from Rae Bareli, Ally Kuldeep Rai Sharma from Amethi Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh, the constituency held by his mother Sonia Gandhi for the last two decades. Kishori Lal Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhi family, has been fielded from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat, the party said in a statement on Friday. Sharma was the key person who looked after the two prestigious constituencies in the absence of the Gandhis. Rahul and Sharma will file their nomination papers on Friday, the last date for the filing of nominations for the seats. Rahul Gandhi along with his mother Sonia Gandhi, sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and brother-in-law Robert Vadra have arrived at the Fursatganj Airport in Amethi ahead of the nomination filing. They were accompanied by former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will also be in Rae Bareli for the nomination filing besides a large number of party workers and leaders. The two seats will go to polls on May 20 in the fifth of the seven-phase general election. Ending days of suspense, the party announced the candidates from the two seats early Friday. Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from the seat which has been held by his mother Sonia Gandhi, his grandmother Indira Gandhi and his grandfather Feroze Gandhi. The constituency has also been represented by family members and friends of the Gandhi-Nehru family. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in a message said, ''Kishori Lal Sharma ji has been associated with our family for years. He has always been dedicated towards serving the people of Amethi and Rae Bareli. His passion for public service is an example in itself.'' ''Today it is a matter of joy that Congress party has made him the party candidate from Amethi. Kishori Lal ji's loyalty and dedication towards duty will definitely bring him in success in this election. Many best wishes,'' she said in a post in Hindi on X. Deliberations had been on in the party since Thursday on the names of the contenders for the two seats, which have been traditionally held by the members of the Gandhi-Nehru family. The BJP had on Thursday announced Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Rae Bareli. He had lost to Sonia Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Posters and banners of Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were also brought late last evening to the Congress office in Gauriganj. BJP leader Smriti Irani has already filed her nomination papers from Amethi. The Uttar Pradesh leadership of the Congress had earlier called upon the Gandhi family to contest both the seats.

Rae Bareli: A Congress bastion from Feroze Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi

Rae Bareli: A Congress bastion from Feroze Gandhi to Rahul Gandhi The surprise nomination of Rahul Gandhi from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli brings the focus back on the VVIP segment which was first represented in the Lok Sabha by the former Congress president's grandfather Feroze Gandhi, who held the seat in the first two elections after Independence. The strong foundations that Feroze Gandhi laid in the constituency were later nurtured and strengthened by his wife and former prime minister Indira Gandhi, who won from the seat in 1967, 1971 and 1980, followed by friends and family members of the Gandhi family. Indira Gandhi contested from two seats in 1980 -- Rae Bareli and Medak in Telangana -- and chose to retain the Medak seat. Arun Nehru won the 1980 bypoll and subsequently in 1984. From Arun Nehru, who was late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's right-hand man, to Sheila Kaul, another Gandhi kin, Rae Bareli returned several of the Gandhi family members and aides to the Lok Sabha. The seat was held by Congress' R P Singh in the 1960 bypoll after the demise of Feroze Gandhi, and by another Congress leader Baij Nath Kureel in 1962. Sheila Kaul, an aunt of Indira Gandhi, represented the seat in 1989 and 1991. In 1999, another friend of the Gandhis, Satish Sharma represented the Rae Bareli constituency, till Sonia Gandhi shifted there. The only time the Congress did not represent the seat was in the wake of the Emergency in 1977 when Janata Party's Raj Narain defeated Indira Gandhi, who was then the prime minister, and BJP's Ashoke Singh in 1996 and 1998. Although Sonia Gandhi upon entering electoral politics chose to make her electoral foray from neighbouring Amethi Lok Sabha seat in 1999, a seat her husband Rajiv Gandhi had held earlier, she soon vacated it for her son Rahul's debut in politics in 2004. Sonia Gandhi subsequently held Rae Bareli four times between 2004 and 2019, although of late, her winning margins began dwindling. The party's calculation behind fielding Rahul from Rae Bareli instead of Amethi, also rests on the conclusion that Rae Bareli is a better, safer seat for the former Congress president, who lost Amethi to BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019 by nearly 50,000 votes. Amid criticism that the Congress had given a walkout to Irani in Amethi, sources said, the party in its wisdom believed that Rae Bareli's historical, emotional and electoral importance for the Gandhi family was higher than that of Amethi. In her farewell message to the people of Rae Bareli, Sonia Gandhi had expressed confidence that the seat which always stood by her and the Gandhis will continue to support her family in future also. In the message on February 15, former party chief Sonia Gandhi informed voters of her Rae Bareli constituency that she will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls due to health and age issues. In an emotional message to the constituents of the segment she has represented since 2004, the 77-year-old also threw subtle hints of a possible entry of a member of her family from Rae Bareli. ''I am proud to say that whatever I am today, I am because of you and I have always done my best to honour your trust. Now on account of health and age issues, I will not contest the next Lok Sabha election,'' she said in the message. ''After this decision, I will not have the opportunity to serve you directly but my heart and soul will always remain with you. I know that you will stand by me and my family in future, just as you have in the past,'' she said in the message. The message to the voters came a day after she filed her nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat from Rajasthan. She entered the Rajya Sabha for the first time and was the second member of the Gandhi family to do so, after Indira Gandhi who was a member of the upper house from 1964 to 1967. In the message to voters, Sonia Gandhi further said, ''My family in Delhi is incomplete without you. It completes when I come to Rae Bareli and meet all of you. My ties with you are very old. I have inherited these ties as a good fortune from my in-laws.'' Noting that ties of her family with Rae Bareli are ''very deep rooted'', she said Rae Bareli sent her father-in-law Feroze Gandhi to Lok Sabha in the first general election held after Independence. After that, you accepted my mother-in-law Indira Gandhi, she noted, adding that ever since, our relationship grew stronger on the difficult road to affection despite the highs and lows of life and our faith in this bond grew stronger. ''You allowed me space to walk along on this shining path. I came to you after losing my mother-in-law and husband and you accepted me with open arms,'' the former Congress chief said. Sending her respect to elders and love to youngsters, she had said in her message, ''I will see you soon''.

Amit Shah slams dynastic SP, Congress for skipping Ram temple opening

LUCKNOW: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the opposition bloc, especially the Samajwadi Party, over dynastic politics while addressing poll rallies in Badaun, Bareilly, and Sitapur on Thursday. He slammed Congress and SP leaders for refusing to attend the consecration of Ram Lalla. In Badaun, Shah criticised the Samajwadi Party for fielding Aditya Yadav, the son of senior SP leader and Akhilesh Yadavs uncle Shivpal Yadav, after much flip-flopping. He accused Akhilesh Yadav of giving tickets to five family members, including himself, his wife Dimple Yadav, and cousins Akshay Yadav, Aditya Yadav, and Dharmendra Yadav, questioning whether no other Yadav besides the first family of SP was capable of contesting elections. Shah addressed a public rally in Budaun, emphasizing that the upcoming election is to give Prime Minister Narendra Modi a third mandate and to tackle issues like terrorism, Naxalism, and crime in Uttar Pradesh. In Bareilly, Shah criticised Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Akhilesh Yadav for not attending the Ram Temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya, accusing them of prioritizing their vote banks over national interests. Continuing his tirade against Congress, Shah stated that the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi would end w i t h a C o n g re s s Dhoondho Yatra after June 4. He praised the governance of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, highlighting improvements in law and order and development under his leadership. He criticised Congress for allegedly favouring Muslims over other communities and accused them of divisive politics.

UPDATE 1-India's opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to contest elections from Raebareli too

UPDATE 1-India's opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to contest elections from Raebareli too India's main opposition Congress party said on Friday that Rahul Gandhi, the face of the party and its former president, will contest general elections from the family bastion seat of Raebareli in north India as well. The decision of the party and the family to field Gandhi from the seat in Uttar Pradesh state signals their confidence to take on the political might of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It is also expected to boost the morale of party members in a key state from which it has been almost wiped out by BJP and regional players. Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous and elects the most lawmakers and a party needs to win a large number of seats here to win power nationally. India's general elections got underway on April 19 and the country will vote in seven phases until June 1, with votes set to be counted on June 4. Congress has ruled India for 54 of its 76 years since independence from Britain, and members of the Nehru-Gandhi family were prime ministers for more than 37 of those 54 years. The adjoining seats of Raebareli and Amethi have been strongholds of the family for decades as they have elected generations of Gandhis or their close relatives since the 1950s. However, the party itself has sunk to historical lows since it was swept out of power by Modi in 2014 and has been struggling to revive itself. While Rahul Gandhi's Italian-born mother Sonia won from Raebareli in 2019 - the only seat Congress won of the 80 in Uttar Pradesh - Rahul lost from Amethi in a shocking defeat at the hands of BJP minister Smriti Irani. He entered parliament from the second seat he had contested from Wayanad in the southern state of Kerala. He is in the fray from Wayanad, which voted on April 26, this time as well. This year, Sonia decided against contesting from Raebareli and instead entered the upper house of parliament through indirect elections. Local media reports had since said that her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, 52, was likely to make her electoral debut and contest from Raebareli while Rahul Gandhi, 53, would stick to Amethi. India allows a candidate to contest more than one seat but they can keep only one if they record multiple victories.

Rahul Gandhi to contest from Raebareli, KL Sharma from Amethi

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Raebareli with the party announced his candidature for the seat on Friday, the last day of filing nomination, the sources said. Congress' loyalist KL Sharma will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi, the seat Rahul Gandhi lost in the 2019 general elections to BJP leader Smriti Irani. Friday is the last date for filing nominations for the seats that will go to polls on May 20 in the fifth round of the seven-phase general elections. The Congress has not yet put out any official statement on its choice of nominees from Amethi and Raebareli, which were considered the party's strongholds until the 2019 elections. Raebareli, the constituency was held by Sonia Gandhi who became a member of the Rajya Sabha. The party has won the Congress bastion in all but three Lok Sabha elections since 1951. Before Sonia Gandhi, former PM Indira Gandhi had won from Raebareli three times. The constituency also elected Indira's husband and Congress leader Feroze Gandhi twice, in 1952 and 1957. A member of the Nehru-Gandhi family has not contested the seat just twice, in 1962 and 1999. Both constituencies are traditional strongholds of the Gandhi-Nehru family, with its members holding these seats for decades. The Congress, which is contesting 17 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh as part of the seat-sharing deal with the Samajwadi Party (SP), has announced candidates for all the seats barring Amethi and Raebareli. Amethi is scheduled to poll in the fifth phase on May 20, with the last date for filing nominations scheduled on May 3. Rahul's defeat in Amethi, once considered a Congress 'pocket borough', at the hands of Smriti Irani in the 2019 polls was seen as a significant blow to the party's national prestige. Rahul represented Amethi in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019. His father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, too, was an elected member of Amethi in the Lower House from 1981 till his death in 1991. Sonia Gandhi contested elections from here in 1999 before passing the baton on to Rahul in 2004. Rahul currently represents Wayanad in the Lok Sabha while Irani is bidding for a fresh term from Amethi.

Will dispel myth of B-team, record high vote share: BSP

NEW DELHI: Blaming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to eat into its vote share in the national capital, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has stated that it would fare better in Lok Sabha elections in pockets where the former appears weak. The Mayawati-led BSP has fielded candidates in all seven seats in Delhi, which goes to polls in the sixth phase on May 25.We are resolute in our belief that our vote share will rejuvenate as we are contesting on our own. This will lead to a triangular contest. BSPs vote share was more than 14 per cent in 2008 assembly elections in Delhi when it was in power in Uttar Pradesh but following the emergence of AAP, vote share has been on decline, BSP Delhi unit chief Laxman Singh affirmed. He claimed that his partys traditional voters had switched to AAP as they can never go to the Bharatiya Janata Party. BSP has been nominating Muslim candidates in Delhi while other parties have always shied away from fielding Muslims in Lok Sabha elections. Out of seven candidates for Delhi, one is OBC, two are Muslims and one belongs to SC community. They are all strong and will fight rigorously, Singh added. With 14.8 per cent vote share, the BSP bagged two assembly seats in 2008 assembly elections in the national capital. However, a year later, in general elections in 2009, the vote share reduced to 5.34 per cent, and since then, it has been declining. In the 2013 assembly elections, the party managed a 5.35 per cent vote share, which reduced to 1.3 per cent in 2015. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the party could fetch 1.2 per cent votes, and its share further plummeted to just one per cent in 2019. In the 2020 assembly polls, BSPs vote share was just 0.7 per cent. Singh further emphasized that the ongoing election would serve as a platform for the BSP to dispel the myth about its alleged link with BJP or Congress. Rivals always made allegations against the BSP; some would say that it is B team of Congress or others B team of BJP. Behan Mayawatiji (BSP supremo) and Akash Anandji, are assertively ready this time. We are bringing people of all communities together, he said.

Kerala: Climate change reality gets heatwave check

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Valerian Isaac, a traditional fisherman from Anchuthengu in Thiruvananthapuram, is deeply concerned about the impact of climate change on his livelihood and the overall quality of life. He used to enjoy his summer with the sea cooling down when folks in the town sweltered in the heat. The situation however has changed dramatically. The sea has warmed up significantly. Consequently, the fish have migrated to cooler waters away from the coast. Previously, we relied on good winds and occasional rains to alleviate the heat. But this summer has proven to be the toughest yet, Isaac said. With the dwindling catch, only a handful of fishermen dare to venture out into the sea in his area. And they are not the only ones suffering. Adverse weather has also affected autorickshaw drivers, tour operators, vegetable vendors and those in the construction sector. As the government considers imposing further restrictions on operations between 11am and 3pm, the livelihoods of even more sectors hang in the balance. Isaac, like many others, had not heard of the term El Nino, a climate phenomenon responsible for warming the sea surface temperature in the Pacific Ocean and often cited as a primary cause of harsh summers. However, he, along with the rest of the populace, has become acquainted with the term heatwave in recent times. Its sudden appearance in the vocabulary coincided with its confirmation in Palakkad on April 26, the day of the general elections. Such weather was once considered unusual, mostly associated with the traditional hot regions of the country. The India Meteorological Department first issued a heatwave alert in Kerala in 2016, the warmest year on record for the state, primarily focused on Palakkad. This year, the focus has again been on Palakkad which experienced scorching temperatures throughout April, with Thrissur following suit. Subsequently, heatwave alerts were issued for Kollam, Kozhikode and Alappuzha, as temperatures in these districts deviated from the norm significantly. A majority of those belonging to the fishing community in Perumathura in Thiruvananthapuram are spending their time under the shade of coconut palms. The reason being the roofs of their homes are made of asbestos and tin sheets, which increase the heat Weather experts assert the situation is similar across south and east India. An Asia-wide heatwave map published by international weather agencies depicts most countries in the region coloured in red. The temperature rise is attributed to global warming induced by climate change. The impact of El Nino exacerbates the situation, said D Sivananda Pai, senior scientist and ADGM of India Meteorological Department. According to him, the dry weather in Kerala has increased the temperature. In Palakkad, the relative humidity is now in the 30-40% range in comparison to the normal 60-80%. Thats why the temperature remains high. The condition is worse for people living in more humid areas as high moisture content does not help reduce body temperature, he said. Like this year, 2016 too was an El Nino year. While it was the warmest year in recent history, the damage, technically, was limited to a heatwave alert in Palakkad. What makes the conditions worse than 2016 is the absence of summer rain, especially in the northern districts, and the land use and land cover changes because of urbanisation, said Rajeevan Erikkulam, a meteorologist with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority. Weather experts pointed out the situation is likely to improve by the second week of May when summer rains are expected to be more regular. The El Nino effect is expected to be neutral during the time of monsoon, but the experts have a warning the next El Nino year could be much worse than 2024. What is heatwave? Qualitatively, heatwave is a condition of air temperature that becomes fatal to human body when exposed. Quantitatively, it is defined based on the temperature thresholds over a region in terms of actual temperature or its departure from normal. Criterion for declaring heatwave Heatwave is considered to be in effect if the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40Celsius or more in the plains, at least 30Celsius or more in hilly regions, and 37 Celsius or more in coastal regions. The departure from normal is 4.5 to 6.4Celsius. If the above criteria is met in at least two stations in a meteorological sub-division for at least two consecutive days, a heatwave is declared on the second day. A woman carrying a pedestal fan on a two-wheeler in Kochi. With mercury level going up, residents are opting for various methods to beat the scorching heat Heatwave prone states Heatwave generally occurs over the plains of northwest India and central, east and north peninsular India from March to June. It covers Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Sometimes, it occurs over Tamil Nadu and Kerala too. Impact of heatwave Water stress Health problems Livelihood problems Heatwave in Kerala First alert - Palakkad, in 2016 First alert - Kozhikode - 2020 First confirmation this year - Palakkad, on April 26 First alert in Alappuzha - April 30 Reasons for heatwave Global warming El Nino Absence of summer rain Urbanisation Number of days above 40 degrees Celsius in April in Kerala 2024 - 16 (15 in Palakkad) 2023 - 3 2016 - 14 1989 - 8

Nomination deadline for Amethi, Rae Bareli seats in UP ends today

NEW DELHI: With barely hours left for filing of nomination papers for the Amethi and Rae Bareli seats, the Congress is continuing to keep the suspense on whether Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka will contest from the prestigious seats. Though there was no official word, sources said that Rahul is likely to enter the fray from Rae Bareli. That decision was taken after much deliberations within the party leadership. However, sources said Priyanka may not contest the general elections. On Wednesday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the decision would be announced by Thursday evening. Yet, there was no official announcement till going to the press. 'Nobody is scared': Congress says decision on Amethi, Raebareli LS seats will be announced in 24 hours However, posters of Rahul have come up in both Amethi and Rae Bareli as the local leadership is hopeful that one of the Gandhis will contest from Amethi. We received a message from the high command in the evening to make preparations for Fridays nomination. The party will also hold a rally today, said a leader. According to sources, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge has conveyed to the Gandhis that not contesting from Uttar Pradesh would not augur well for the partys prospects in the Hindi heartland. Rahul represented Amethi for three straight terms from 2004 to 2019 before he was defeated by Union minister Smriti Irani by over 50,000 votes in 2019. Irani, who is seeking a second term from Amethi, has challenged Rahul to contest from the seat. A section of the leaders believe that if Rahul does not take up the challenge, it will only vindicate the BJPs charges of him running away from the seat. Suspense prevails over Rae Bareli as BJP probables for remaining UP seats wait with bated breath According to sources, Rahul was not keen on Priyankas electoral debut as he did not want all the three members of the family in Parliament. The BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been constantly attacking the Congress over its dynasty politics. Family bastion Rae Bareli is prestigious for the Congress as it was held by Indira Gandhi thrice, her husband Feroze Gandhi twice and Sonia from 2004 to 2024

Trouble Brews for JS Candidate Uday

Kakinada: Trouble is brewing for Jana Senas Kakinada Lok Sabha candidate Tangella Uday Srinivas as the YSRC leaders stepped up their efforts to disqualify him from the contest on charges he hid information in the poll affidavit about his criminal cases in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. YSRC leaders moved the Ministry of External Affairs, citing the criminal charges the candidate faced in the UAE. Uday Srinivas is in the eye of a storm. The political rivals say there are many cases pending against him, but he has not declared them in the election affidavit. The candidate is caught in cricket betting and some other cases in Sharjah. There is also a controversy over his educational qualification, they say. Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan introduced Uday Srinivas as a software engineer to the people of Kakinada Lok Sabha. But Uday Srinivas stated in his affidavit that he passed Intermediate and discontinued his Bachelor of Technology course. Pawan Kalyan often claims that as a hero, he earns not less than Rs 1,000 crore per annum and therefore there is no need for him to accept any package from anybody. But, in the election affidavit, he stated that his five-year income was only Rs 114 crore. The political opponents say a wide gulf separates Pawan Kalyans claims and his actual earnings. There is no documentary evidence to support his claims. Meanwhile, an independent candidate Saladi Uday Bhaskar raised objections against Uday Srinivas that the latter has hidden some information and facts in his affidavit. According to the objections, the Jana Sena candidate has offered information with regard to FIR No. 0163/2023, registered by Gomti Nagar Police Station, at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, but intentionally avoided giving any details about the criminal cases pending against him in Sharjah and also about a look-out notice issued by the Sharjah Public Prosecution on 4 April 2024. The date of birth of Uday Srinivas was mentioned as 13 May 1985 and his Indian Passport No.V7386334. Judge, Hossam EI-Din Hassan Mustafa Muhammad Hadr, Sharjah Federal Court, Civil Execution Court, Ministry of Justice, UAE, has issued seizure and habeas corpus execution order No. SHCEXCICPL2022/007401 on the application of Sheikh Kalid Bin Salem Al Quasmi, UAE national, against executor/Uday Srinivas, carrying Indian Passport No. V7386334, EC has been informed via the complaint. In the order, the Sharjah Federal Court of First Instance decided to arrest and bring the perpetrator and present him to it immediately upon his arrest, provided that he will be released if he pays a sum of 1,200,000 dirhams, unless he is wanted by the police there for another reason. Another allegation is that Uday Srinivas was ordered to undergo an imprisonment of six months for the two charges attributed to him, and also deportation from the country after executing the prescribed punishment and confiscating the forged document and ordering them to pay the due fee. The complaint has appealed to the election officials that the affidavit of Uday Srinivas cant be allowed to be ridiculed by the candidates by offering incomplete information or suppressing material information, resulting in disinformation or misinformation to the voters and the election commission should reject his nomination based on the evidence.

No Political Affiliation in Amit Shah's Alleged Fake Video Case as No Witnesses Appear

No Political Affiliation in Amit Shah's Alleged Fake Video Case as No Witnesses Appear Not even a single member of any political party on Thursday appeared before Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the special cell of the Delhi Police in connection with the sharing of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's fake video, the officials said. ''We have asked some of the leaders from Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and one person from the Northeast. But no one turned-up for questioning on Thursday,'' a senior police officer said. The Delhi Police is likely to serve a second notice to the members of the Telangana Congress in connection with the uploading and sharing of the fake video of Shah. The four members of the Telangana Congress, who were supposed to appear before the office of the (IFSO), did not come on Wednesday. ''We will again ask them to appear before the IO (investigating officer), as they did not come on Wednesday,'' an officer, privy to the investigation said. The summonses were issued to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and four Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) members -- Shiva Kumar Ambala, Asma Tasleem, Satish Manne and Naveen Pettem -- under sections 91 and 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). According to the police sources, if a person is served notice under section 160/91 of the CrPC, the person can either make a physical appearance before the IO or send a legal representative. On Wednesday, Reddy's lawyer appeared before the IO and asserted that the Congress leader had nothing to do with creating or posting the doctored video of Shah's speech. According to police, about 22 people from various political parties in the states of Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have been served notices in connection with the case and they have been asked to appear before the police on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The special cell of the Delhi Police had on Sunday registered an FIR after the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which is under the ministry of home affairs (MHA), filed a complaint about the doctored video of Shah where his statements indicating a commitment to abolish quota for Muslims on religious ground in Telangana were changed to make it seem that he was advocating scrapping of all reservations.

Soaring temperatures scorch Eastern and Southern India: Nandyal records sweltering 46.2 degrees Celsius

Soaring temperatures scorch Eastern and Southern India: Nandyal records sweltering 46.2 degrees Celsius Intense heat swept through east India and parts of the southern peninsular region on Thursday, testing power grids and prompting the Kerala government to order closure of educational institutions till May 6. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heat wave to severe heat wave conditions scorched parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. At least 17 places in these states recorded temperatures above the 44-degree Celsius mark. The mercury settled at 46.2 degrees Celsius at Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, 45.3 degrees at Palwancha in Telangana, 44.3 degrees at Karur Paramathi in Tamil Nadu, 45 degrees at Bolangir in Odisha, and 44.3 degrees at Kalaikunda in West Bengal. As Kerala continued to reel under punishing heat, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed the closure of educational institutions in the state until May 6. The IMD said the ongoing heat wave spell in east and south peninsular India will continue till May 3 and abate thereafter. The Met office on Wednesday said above normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in May and a significantly high number of heat wave days expected over the northern plains, central region, and adjoining areas of peninsular India. April saw record-smashing maximum temperatures in east, northeast, and southern peninsular India prompting health warnings from government agencies and some states to suspend in-person classes in schools. A number of stations recorded their highest ever April day temperature. Five active Western Disturbances led to rain, thunderstorm, and hail storms over north and central India at regular intervals in April, preventing heat waves. IMD data shows that heat waves in April this year were far worse than in 2023, the warmest year on record so far. This trend is likely to continue in May, with around eight to 11 heat wave days predicted over south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat regions. The remaining parts of Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka, and Telangana may record five to seven heat wave days in the month. Normally, the northern plains, central India, and adjoining areas of peninsular India experience around three days of heat waves in May. India saw two spells of heat waves in April from April 5 to 7 and April 15 to 30. The IMD attributes the prolonged heat wave spell over east, northeast, and south peninsular India in April to the absence of thunderstorms and an anticyclone at lower levels over the west central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining eastern coasts of India. This caused the sea breeze to cut off over Odisha and West Bengal on most days. The weather office said south peninsular India recorded an average maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius in April, which was the second-highest since 1901. The mean temperature (28.12 degrees Celsius) in April in east and northeast India was the highest since 1901, it said. The IMD said above normal maximum temperatures have become frequent over south peninsular India since 1980s. The region recorded 12.6 mm of rainfall in April, which was the fifth lowest since 1901 and the second lowest since 2001. According to IMD data, the number of heat wave days this April was the highest in 15 years in Gangetic West Bengal and nine years in Odisha. Odisha also experienced the longest heat wave spell (16 days) in April since 2016. Amid the prevailing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period, coinciding with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. Hundreds of thousands of voters had to cope with the searing heat when they stepped out to exercise their franchise in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 26. Polling for 94 constituencies across 12 states will take place on May 7. The weather office had earlier expected four to eight heat wave days in different parts of the country in April against a normal of one to three days. Ten to 20 heat wave days are expected against a normal of four to eight in the entire April-June period.

Didi Accuses Congress of Colluding with BJP

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the Congress of teaming up with BJP to ask the voters not to support her party in the Lok Sabha Election in the state. The Trinamul Congress supremo also blamed the Congress for having no policy or ideology. Her allegations came a day after state Congress president and five-time MP Adhir Choudhury, who is seeking his re-election from Berhampore parliamentary seat in Murshidabad, suggested to the people to vote for BJP instead of TMC. Addressing a poll campaign rally for TMC candidate Mahua Moitra, Ms Banerjee said at Tehatta in Nadia, I salute the Election Commission member who resigned for pathetic treatment towards Bengal. But who are the people, now in chair? In a veiled reference to Mr Choudhurys designation in Lok Sabha, the CM added, They are BJP people along with one from Congress, also the leader of the opposition, who is asking people to vote either his party or BJP. Try to understand. They have neither policy nor ideology. To justify her argument, the TMC chief pointed out, Two leaders (BJP president JP Nadda and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath) held meetings recently in Berhampore but did not utter the name of that leader (Mr Choudhury) for even once. Why didn't they do it? Afterall, a bunch of selfish people like them have sold out the country. On Wednesday, the TMC posted a video clip on X-handle which showed Mr Choudhury saying, It's better to vote for BJP rather than TMC during his poll campaign. Ms Banerjee also alerted the public about hearing lies on Friday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will a BJP rally at Tehatta. She said, Tomorrow BJP leaders are coming here again to spread lies because they have an allergy of Mahua who was expelled from the post for revealing the truth.
