GLOBAL MARKETS-Stocks edge up as timing of US rate cuts weighed; copper jumps

GLOBAL MARKETS-Stocks edge up as timing of US rate cuts weighed; copper jumps A world stock index rose for a seventh straight session and U.S. Treasury yields also gained on Friday as investors tried to assess the timing of potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 40,000 for the first time, and all three major U.S. stock indexes posted strong gains for the week. Copper surged to a 26-month peak after China announced fresh support for its ailing property sector, while nickel prices touched their highest level since August 2023 amid unrest in nickel producer New Caledonia. Gold prices also gained. Data from earlier this week showing softening consumer prices in April boosted expectations that the U.S. central bank will be able to cut rates twice this year, beginning in September. Much depends, however, on what happens with price pressures in the coming months and Fed officials have hinted U.S. rates may not fall anytime soon. On Friday, Fed Governor Michelle Bowman repeated her view that inflation will fall further with the policy rate held steady, but said she has seen no improvement on inflation this year and remains willing to hike rates should progress stall or reverse. Minutes from the Fed's most recent policy meeting are due next week and may offer more detail on what Fed officials are looking at to begin cutting rates. The meeting from April 30May 1, however, took place before Wednesday's CPI data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 134.21 points, or 0.34%, to 40,003.59, the S&P 500 gained 6.17 points, or 0.12%, to 5,303.27 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 12.35 points, or 0.07%, to 16,685.97. For the week, the Dow gained 1.2%, the S&P 500 rose 1.5% and the Nasdaq climbed 2.1%. People are now looking at the next catalyst. Most likely it's going to be whether or not the Fed actually cuts, said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe rose 0.88 points, or 0.11%, to 794.96, and was set for a seventh session of gains and another record high close. The index was also set to post gains for the week. The STOXX 600 index fell 0.13%. A report showed European Central Bank board member Isabel Schnabel advocated caution about further interest rate cuts after a likely first one in June. In Treasuries, the yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 4.3 basis points to 4.42% versus 4.377% late on Thursday. The U.S. dollar was mostly flat against other major currencies. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, fell 0.02% to 104.48, with the euro up 0.05% at $1.087. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.18% at 155.65. The Japanese currency has weakened this year as the Bank of Japan has kept monetary policy loose while higher U.S. rates have drawn money toward U.S. bonds and the dollar. Tokyo is suspected to have intervened on at least two days in late April and early May to support the yen after it tumbled to lows last seen more than three decades ago. Three-month nickel on the London Metal Exchange (LME) surged 5.2% to $20,820 a metric ton by 1600 GMT after touching $21,365, the highest since August 2023. LME copper climbed 2.3% to $10,662 per ton, the strongest since March 2022. Gold prices , aided by China's stimulus measures, also rose. Spot gold rose 1.5% to $2,412.83 per ounce. Oil prices rose, with global benchmark Brent crude recording its first weekly gain in three weeks. U.S. crude gained 83 cents to settle at $80.06 a barrel and Brent rose 71 cents to settle at $83.98 per barrel. GLOBAL MARKETS-Stocks near flat as timing of US rate cuts weighed; copper jumps World stock indexes were nearly flat while U.S. Treasury yields rose on Friday as investors tried to assess the timing of potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year. In Asia, Chinese blue-chips staged a late rally on Friday, as the government unveiled a series of historic steps to underpin the property sector, which has lurched from crisis to crisis and weighed on overall economic growth. Shanghai's CSI 300 ended 1% up, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index hit its highest since August 2022, up 0.9%. In Treasuries, the yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 4.1 basis points to 4.418% from 4.377% late on Thursday. The dollar traded little changed against major currencies. The dollar index, which measures it against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, fell 0.05% to 104.45, with the euro up 0.06% at $1.0872. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.15% to 155.61. CMTA hosts forum to explore Sri Lankas Economic Growth & Mobility

The recent event organized by the Ceylon Motor Traders Association (CMTA), themed Mobility and Economic Growth, brought together key stakeholders and thought leaders to delve into crucial discussions shaping Sri Lankas economic landscape. The event, highlighted by a keynote speech from Mr. Katsuki Kotaro, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, and a dynamic panel discussion, provided invaluable insights and strategies for sustainable growth and enhanced mobility. Mr. Kotaro emphasized Sri Lankas significant strides in economic recovery since the challenges of 2022. He explained that Sri Lankas economy has rebounded since 2022, with steady growth rates approaching the 3% target for 2024. Inflation, previously at 70%, has dropped to 2.5%, though prices remain high. Government efforts and IMF support have stabilized the economy. He went on to explain, that Sri Lankas practical strategy should involve starting with hybrid vehicles until about 2030, then transitioning gradually to EVs and fuel cell vehicles by 2035, mirroring Japans carbon neutrality goals. This phased approach acknowledges Sri Lankas current infrastructure and fiscal limitations. Its crucial to develop industrial policies that support automobile production and enhance mobility while balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. The keynote speech was followed by an engaging panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Yasendra Amerasinghe, Immediate Past Chairman of CMTA. The esteemed panel consisted of Ms. Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Ranjith Rubasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Highways, and Mr. Bingumal Thewarathanthri, Chairman, Sri Lanka Bankers Association. Topics ranged from Japans perspective on Sri Lankas recovery to fiscal measures impacting industries and upcoming initiatives for improved mobility and transportation and more. During the course of the discussion, Mr. Bingumal Thewarathanthri, Chairman of Sri Lanka Bankers Association, spoke about Sri Lankas current economic trajectory, and possible risks the country might face. He explained, We dont see a risk of not crossing this review. As a country, weve made significant progress in several areas, including fiscal policy and the external sector, which has performed exceptionally well. Although there are still areas that need improvement, particularly in debt restructuring, the requirement is to show meaningful progress rather than completion for the second review. Given our advancements, Im confident that Sri Lanka will secure the $300 billion needed to move forward. Ms. Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary, Ministry of Education addressed the gathering about the development of industry from an educational standpoint. She explained, From an educational perspective, as industries develop, we must focus on enhancing our skilled manpower to meet their needs. The Ministry of Education, with the support of vocational training programs, is dedicated to developing skills for emerging industries such as automobile and component manufacturing. Weve established a Sector Advisory Council to ensure that our training aligns with industry requirements. By the end of this year, we plan to have all our courses in the automobile sector tailored to meet industrial demands, ensuring that our workforce is well-prepared to support these key industries. Mr. Ranjith Rubasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Highways, shared his thoughts on the current state of the transportation and mobility sector. He stated, Our transportation industry is not operating at its highest efficiency. We need to address fundamental issues before adopting new trends like e-mobility. Our focus is on establishing a green energy network before moving to e-mobility. The National Land Transport Policy is in process, and we aim to finalize it soon to guide industry decisions. Weve also developed an e-mobility policy with expert input, which is crucial for our future plans. Many of our systems are self-grown and need external interventions to become efficient. Mr. Katsuki Kotaro, Deputy Head of Mission Embassy of Japan delivering the keynote address. Ms. Thilaka Jayasundara (Secretary, Ministry of Education), Eng. Ranjith Rubasinghe (Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Highways), Mr. Bingumal Thewarathanthri (Chairman, Sri Lanka Bankers Association), Mr. Katsuki Kotaro and CMTA officials.

How I did a 5-day, 2500 km Nashik road trip in a '10 Mercedes-Benz E350

BHPian CaptAM recently shared this with other enthusiasts. INTRO: Finally undertook a road trip that had been planned even before I got the car in which I went on the trip.Drove from Delhi to Nashik(Sula Vineyards) and back, covering a total distance of 2500km in 5 days. BACKGROUND: The plan was to go on a road trip with the following criteria to be met:Total trip of 5 days. Not more than 800km to be covered per day.A limit of 12hrs on the road per day.Fuel stops only in the city. No highway petrol pumps.ROUTE:The total distance from my residence to Sula Vineyards was approx. 1250kms one way.Since it was only me and my wife, in a luxury car, night stops had to be planned in decent and safe locations only. The majority of the trip was planned to cover a substantial distance on the NE4 even if meant covering a longer overall distance. The decision was a smart one as every time we entered the NE after a stint on the state highways, the relief was undeniable.DAY 1: Delhi - Ratlam ( Total Distance: 771km ; Time on Road: 10hr30mins)Fully gassed up and nitrogen filled to proper specs, started from Delhi at 5.05am. Within 40mins we were on the NE4, where I could for the first time unleash Spectre and wake the beast which had been lazing inside during city drives. After a long stint on the NE4, we were forced to take the exit at Lalsot and then join back immediately to continue till Sawai Madhopur, where the NE ended for now. After that it was a relentless run on the NH148, to our first refuel stop at Kota, RJ. While I was worried about this stretch since it was a single carriageway, the quality of the road was really good. Also, there was enough scenic relief to keep the drive interesting. Finally reached the beautiful city of Kota around 10.30am. Had planned to visit the famed, 7 wonders park, but were surprised to learn that it opened after 2.30pm (very coaching capital(ish) indeed).Decided to have an early lunch at the nice and clean Sasa Resort on the outskirt of Kota. Thereafter we continued to our next destination, Ratlam, MP.This stint started on the NH52, where after Gmaps being Gmaps took us through a state/district highway. This was the worst road on our entire route, with constant bumps and many unpaved parts as well. Luckily the traffic on this stretch was sparse and the thirty odd kilometers ended with us entering the most beautiful stretch of the NE4!Beautiful farm lands and giant windmills aplenty, the relief after the poor state highway was instantaneous. The rest of the journey was uneventful and we entered our hotel in Ratlam at 3.30pm.Stats at the end of Day 1 DAY 2: Ratlam - Nashik (Total Distance: 512km ; Time on Road: 8Hr)After an uncomfortable night in the below par hotel, we decided to start from Ratlam an hour earlier than we had planned. So, left the hotel at 6am, and after a short petrol top-up, we were once again on our way.Our route covered NH156-NH52-NH60.We enjoyed a wonderful drive, witnessing a mesmerising sunrise, before passing through the short, but beautiful ghat section. While there was plenty of traffic on this route, progress was still swift. The roads were well maintained with just a few road works around the ghat section. Also, there were fewer speed bumps on this route, placed more predictably than the day before. We reached Sula Vineyards, at 2PM.Entering our Destination DAY 3: Spent in Sula.Wine tasting, cycling around and exploring the property. Basically just chilling the entire day.Elegant wine tasting room and a colourful sunset DAY 4: Sula,Nashik - Kota (Total Distance: 750km Time on Road:12hrs)This was the day I was the most worried about. Longest drive of the trip, and overall fatigue adding up.Started off at 6am. First stop was to refuel. Was excited to try out Shell, since we dont have them in the north. However, just got a partial fuel up done since they were around Rs. 15/L more expensive than other petrol pumps!Enjoyed the rest of the trip back, with Gmaps pleasantly surprising us twice. Once with a wonderfull winding road(NH31) which was driving heaven for me since the road was in perfect condition with almost no traffic at all.The second surprise was when it took us on a route that avoided the horrendous state highway we had encountered on our way from Kota to Ratlam. Thanks to both these things the return till Kota was much less fatiguing than I had anticipated and we reached our hotel fresher than expected. Therefore, we decided to visit the 7 wonders park on this day, and got the car fuelled and prepped for the next day.Stats as we ended our long day 4 DAY 5: Kota - Delhi (Total Distance: 490Km Time on Road: 6hrs)The most relaxed driving day of the trip. Familiar roads and majority of the drive on the NE4.Started in the morning at 6.30am, with no agenda except to relax and enjoy the drive. As soon as we got on the NE4, we decided to slow down since we wanted to stop for breakfast at Mcd, having missed it on our drive out of Delhi.Reached home at 12.25PM, with our total trip ODO reading 2522.3Km.Stats at the end of day 5 It was an amazing and epic trip, made even more enjoyable thanks to our noble steed. Which brings me to my next section.. The CAR: Introducing SPECTRE. Our 2010 Mercedes E350 (W212). I have been waiting for a long time to write an ownership thread on her, but I think I'll start it from here. This car was on my radar for a long time, and only for this gem of an engine. The build quality and comfort are just the icing on the cake.Coming back to this beast of an engine, it was just a pleasure stretching her legs on the highway. The immense power is addictive, and it made easy work of overtakes on the single carriageway. The ride was very comfortable and while I was worried about the low ground clearance, it did not scrape anywhere even once. Even on broken roads it was very composed and the suspension took everything in its stride.Accomodations:Ratlam: Hotel Balaji Central - Not a pleasant stay. Decided to check out as early as possible. Would not recommend.Nashik: The Source at Sula - Took their treehouse rooms, which were very comfortable. Would definitely recommend. Nepal Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane Acquitted By Patan HC In Rape Case: Reports

The Patan High Court: The Patan High Court on Wednesday acquitted Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane in the rape case after the Kathmandu District Court sentenced him eight years in jail in January, reports stated. Sandeep is now available for the T20 World Cup squad after he was found innocent. However, Nepal has already announced the 15-player squad led by Rohit Paudel but with the ICC rule of allowing the teams to make changes to their squad until May 25 it is certain that Lamichhane might get picked. According to local media reports, the court found Lamichhane innocent of raping a woman identified as Gushala-26 in a hotel in Tilganga on August 21, 2022. Senior advocates Ram Narayan Bidari, Raman Shrestha, Shambu Thapa, Murari Sapkota, and Krishna Sapkota presented their arguments on behalf of cricketer Lamichhane, challenging the Kathmandu District Court's verdict that convicted him in a rape case, it said. The proceedings, which commenced on Tuesday, continued through Wednesday and it all came in favour of the 23-year-old cricketer. Sandeep has represented Nepal in 52 T20I matches and has taken 98 wickets and will be crucial for Nepals T20 WC run as they face The Netherlands on June 4 at Texan to begin their campaign.

VIJAYAWADA: Gurazala YSRC MLA Kasu Mahesh Reddy on Tuesday demanded the arrest of the TDP leaders who allegedly resorted to the late Monday night attacks on the residents of Kota Ganesunipadu of Palnadu district. The attack lasted for three hours with BC households bearing the brunt of the attack. Women and children were not spared from the violence. Some women managed to evade the attack and took refuge under a small tree with their children, he said. Mahesh Reddy said he has written letters to the Election Commission regarding the issues faced by the village and sought increased police security. However, only two to three constables have been deployed in the village, he added. The MLA further said that he had repeatedly urged the SP to deploy force, foreseeing potential conflicts in the village and asked as to why the SP did not deploy sufficient force.

Post-Poll Violence Create Tension in Several Areas in AP

VIJAYAWADA: Post-poll violence continued in various areas of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, which created tension in areas like faction-prone Palnadu region and the temple city of Tirupati. The violence erupted in the Palnadu region with the vandalising of houses of YSRC supporters in Kota Ganesunipadu by Telugu Desam supporters. The clashes erupted in the district on the polling day. Local TD workers first provoked the YSRC workers and later started attacking them, the ruling party alleged. The clash occurred at Velpur of Achampet mandal. A few TD leaders vandalised the houses of the BC community voters as they supported the YSRC in Kotha Ganesunipadu of Piduguralla mandal, Palnadu district. TD workers attacked the houses of YSRC leaders. As a result, the women of the respective families hid inside the temple all night, a report said. On Tuesday, MLAs Kasu Mahesh Reddy and Anil Kumar Yadav went to the village to support the victims. Knowing that the MLAs were coming, the TD workers surrounded the village. The convoy of Mahesh and Anil was attacked with stones and sticks. As the situation got out of control, the police opened fire in the air. The convoy of MLAs moved further with the help of central forces. Mahesh Reddy said, When members of the BC community supported the YSRC in the village, TD resorted to attacks at midnight. I have written letters to the election commission and sought increased police security. They have deployed only 2-3 constables in the village. I repeatedly urged the SP to employ force, foreseeing potential conflicts in the village. The request remained unanswered: Why didn't the SP utilise force? Where was the SP when women sought refuge by hiding behind the trees at night? Given the turmoil caused by Telugu Desam leaders, why didn't the SP conduct a check in the area? I urge the SP and IG to take action and arrest those TD leaders within 24 hours, he said. Tensions ran high in Velpur of Acchampeta mandal of Palnadu district. At night, a conflict started following a dispute between the two parties. As rival sides started trading blows against each other, the police intervened and brought the situation under control. Tirupati city turned into a battlefield following an attack on Telugu Desam candidate Pulivarthi Nani by miscreants, allegedly from the YSRC, The incident took place on the premises of the Sri Padmavati Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam, where Nani had gone to inspect a strong room containing EVMs. Nani confronted a group of YSRC activists loitering near the area, leading to a heated exchange that soon escalated into physical violence. The ruckus continued for long and the police and district collector Pravin Kumar intervened to restore order. Stone pelting took place between TD and YSRC leaders in Tadipatri of Anantapur district. Reports said police inspector Muralikrishna was injured. YSRC cadres pelted stones at TD leader Surya's house. Municipal chairman Prabhakar Reddy sat on a dharna in the police station circle in protest against the attack. In Nandyal district too, a clash occurred between TD and YSRC when YSRC leader Ramesh Naidu went to TD leader Hari's house and confronted him. In a separate incident, there was tension near Ravichettu centre of Atreyapuram mandal in Konaseema district. A clash took place between YSRC-TD workers on Monday night. On Tuesday, both sides challenged each other on WhatsApp groups. Local MLA Chirla Jaggireddy and alliance candidate Bandaru Satyananda Rao entered the scene. As the situation worsened, the police stepped in and took preventive steps

Transport facility arranged for tribal voters in Andhra Pradesh

VISAKHAPATNAM: District officials in Alluri Sitarama Raju district facilitated the transportation of tribal residents from remote hilltop villages to their respective polling stations to enable them to exercise their right to vote. Remote tribal villagers in ASR district plead for transportation facility This initiative came in response to The New Indian Express s reports highlighting the challenges faced by these communities, particularly the tribals of Kalyan Gummi village in Gumma Panchayat of Ananthagiri mandal, who had to travel nearly 70 kilometres, and the tribals of Dyatri, Madrebu, and Tunisibu villages, who had to cover nearly 30 kilometres to reach their polling stations. Araku Returning Officer and Paderu Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) Project Officer V Abishek took swift action upon receiving these reports, directing revenue officials to organise transportation for the affected tribals. Consequently, villagers from Madrebu in Pedakota Panchayat commenced their journey from Dayarthi village in Jeenabadu Panchayat to cast their votes at Pedakota polling station numbers 295 and 297. Similarly, tribals from Kalyana Gummi village travelled from Chintalapudi in Devarapalli mandal to Medaparthi Polling Station Number 286, utilising buses provided and arranged by the district administration. In response to this support, the tribals expressed gratitude to the ITDA Project Officer and other district officials for facilitating transportation, which allowed them to participate in the electoral process. Further, they conveyed optimism that authorities would address their longstanding need for improved road connectivity to their villages in the near future. Tribals of Buruga and Chinakonela hilltop villages carry elderly women to polling stations on Monday For tribal residents from remote hilltop villages and villages situated far away in Anantagiri, Muchinputtu, and Pedabayalu mandals, transportation arrangements have been made. Buses, jeeps, and cars have been provided to ensure their access to polling stations. In the case of Gumma Panchayat, where residents would have had to trek 16 kilometres downhill, they were instead directed to travel 2 kilometers to Devarapalli in Anakapalle, from where buses were arranged, the ITDA Project Officer said. He further mentioned that similarly for villages like Dayarthi and others, seven to eight jeeps were organised to shuttle voters to and from the polling stations. These jeeps transported one group of voters to cast their votes, dropped them off, and then returned to bring another group. Additionally, five jeeps were allocated for tribal residents from Bongaputtu and Kosaputtu villages in Lakshmipuram Panchayat who were voting for the first time. Furthermore, 10 jeeps were arranged for residents from Munchigputtu. These additional transportation facilities have played a crucial role in encouraging voters to participate in the electoral process, he added. However, despite these efforts, some tribals, like those from China Konela, and Buruga, were still faced with significant challenges. With no road access, these villagers had to trek 15 kilometres to reach their polling stations. They transported elderly residents using Dolis (makeshift stretchers). China Konela and Buruga, situated in Anantagiri mandal, house approximately 150 voters. The villagers emphasised the urgent need for government intervention to lay roads, underscoring the critical importance of infrastructure development for remote tribal settlements.

Controversy erupts as Madhavi Latha asks burqa-clad voter to lift her veil during polls in Telangana

HYDERABAD: BJP Hyderabad Lok Sabha candidate K Madhavi Latha landed in controversy on Monday after a video clip of her asking burqa-clad Muslim women to reveal their faces at a polling booth so that she could match them with the photographs on their voter ID cards went viral. A case was registered under relevant Sections of the IPC and Representation of the People Act. The Hyderabad Collectors office confirmed in a post on X that a case against the BJP candidate was registered in the Malakpet police station under Sections 171C (voluntarily interfering in the exercise of electoral right), 186 (voluntarily obstructing a public servant from discharging of duties) and 505 (1)(c) (circulation of a statement with an intent to incite a class or community) of the IPC, besides Section 132 of the Representation of the People Act. According to the complaint filed by Booth Level Officer (BLO) M Aruna, Madhavi Latha engaged in inappropriate behaviour with a voter. The incident occurred when Rafatunnisa, a voter, arrived at the polling station to vote. It is alleged that Madhavi Latha took Rafatunnisas ID card and lifted her burqa reportedly without her consent. Claiming discrepancies between the voters ID card photo and her actual appearance, Madhavi Latha reportedly instructed Rafatunnisa to return home and verify her identity using her Aadhaar card, insisting that she remove her niqab (veil) for a thorough check. Rafatunnisa, feeling humiliated, left the polling booth without casting her vote. The AIMIM lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) after a video clip of Madhavi Lathas actions in the polling booth emerged. Clarifying on the matter, election authorities said that no candidate has the right to lift someones (veil) to check her identity. If there is suspicion, a candidate can ask the polling officer to verify a voters identity, they added. #WATCH | Telangana: BJP candidate from Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, Madhavi Latha visits a polling booth in the constituency. Voting for the fourth phase of #LokSabhaElections2024 is underway. pic.twitter.com/BlsQXRn80C ANI (@ANI) May 13, 2024 When polling was underway, Madhavi Latha visited polling booths and at a polling booth at Azampura in the Malakpet assembly segment, she halted and started checking EPIC cards of the burqa-clad women waiting to franchise their vote. The BJP candidate alleged that there were several discrepancies in the voters list and hence she came there to verify the same. She was seen cautioning poll personnel about facial identification. Later, Madhavi Latha defended her decision and said there was nothing wrong in her asking some women voters to verify their identity. I am a candidate, and every candidate has the right to verify the credentials of the voters wearing face masks or burqa, she told reporters. Mother's Day is universally celebrated on the second Sunday of May. However, when someone showers us with unconditional love and makes our lives easier every single day, shouldn't they be celebrated every day? Amidst the never ending chores, work obligations, raising children, and supporting the family, mothers often carry out their responsibilities without a single complaint, never seeking anything in return. Unfortunately, sometimes we might just forget how much they do for us. This Mother's Day, let's aim to break away from the tradition of materialistic gifts and instead, take the opportunity to truly connect with our mothers. Aiming to do the same, Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance launches a heartwarming Mothers Day campaign in hopes of spreading the message to more and more viewers. The campaign is just like a big warm hug to all other mothers; something they long from us everyday. The campaign shows us a glimpse into the lives of mothers, exhausted from their day's chores, stealing moments of rest whenever they can. Yet, it's their children who perform small acts of kindness that make these tired moments so meaningful. It's the little gestures, like tucking a pillow under their head as they rest, draping a blanket over them, or gently moving their laptops aside while they sleep, that truly touch our hearts. These simple actions are a reminder of the power of love and empathy. They take us back to the essence of Mother's Day, urging us to move beyond materialistic gifts and embrace the beauty of heartfelt gestures. Through this campaign, Kotak Mahindra Life Insurances tributes all the small acts of kindness, the sacrifices made silently, and the love mothers give without expectation of anything in return. It encourages us to sit down with our mothers, express our feelings openly, and genuinely inquire about their day. Trump attacks Biden in Jersey Shore rally speech, alleges political prosecution in hush money case

Trump attacks Biden in Jersey Shore rally speech, alleges political prosecution in hush money case Sandwiched between his appearances in court, Donald Trump headed on Saturday to the Jersey Shore, where he repeatedly blamed President Joe Biden for the criminal charges he's facing as the presumptive nominees prepare to face off in the November election and called his New York hush money case a Biden show trial. Blasting the Democratic president a total moron, Trump before a crowd of tens of thousands repeatedly characterized the cases against him as politically motivated and timed to harm his ability to campaign. He's a fool. He's not a smart man, Trump said of Biden. I talk about him differently now because now the gloves are off. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, drew what his team called a mega crowd to a Saturday evening rally in the southern New Jersey resort town of Wildwood, 150 miles (241 kilometers) south of the New York City courthouse where he has been forced to spend most weekdays sitting silently through his felony hush money trial. Lisa Fagan, spokesperson for the city of Wildwood, told The Associated Press that she estimated a crowd of between 80,000 and 100,000 attendees, based off her own observations on the scene Saturday, having seen dozens of other events in the same space. Trump was joined on stage by several high-level endorsers including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who is still listed as a registered sex offender after pleading guilty in New York in 2011 to misdemeanor criminal charges of sexual misconduct and patronizing an underage prostitute. The beachfront gathering, described by Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., as the largest political gathering in state history, was designed to serve as a show of force at a critical moment for Trump, who is facing dozens of felony charges in four separate criminal cases with the election less than six months away. Hours before he was scheduled to take the stage, thousands of Trump loyalists donning Never Surrender T-shirts and red Make America Great Again hats crowded onto the sand between the boardwalk and carnival rides to greet the former Republican president. The everyday American people are 100% behind him, said Doreen O'Neill, a 62-year-old nurse from Philadelphia. They have to cheat and smear him and humiliate him in that courtroom every single day, O'Neill said. This country is going to go insane if they steal the election again. Trump's extraordinary legal woes, which include three other unrelated criminal cases, have emerged as a central issue in the campaign. Trump has repeatedly accused the Biden administration and Democratic officials in New York of using the legal system to block his return to the White House. Prosecutors allege the former president broke the law to conceal an affair with a porn actor that would have hurt his first presidential bid. On Saturday, Trump posited that even those whom he accuses of politically motivated prosecutions didn't bring every case they could have, pointing to the boosts his campaign has sustained with each wave of charges. I heard they were going to do a couple of other things and they said from Washington ... we're indicting him into the White House,' Trump said. They said, Don't do it.' While Trump seized on his legal woes Saturday, a judge's gag order and the threat of jail limit Trump's ability to comment publicly on witnesses, jurors and some others connected to the New York trial, which is expected to consume much of the month. The judge in the case already has fined Trump $9,000 for violating the order and warned that jail could follow if he doesn't comply. The order doesn't include references to Judge Juan M. Merchan, whom Trump called highly conflicted or District Attorney Alvin Bragg, both of whom Trump said are doing the bidding for crooked Joe Biden. Trump's responsibilities as a defendant have limited his ability to win over voters on the campaign trail. He spent last week's off-day from court in the general election battlegrounds of Wisconsin and Michigan. And he was campaigning with tens of thousands of voters Saturday in New Jersey, a reliably Democratic state. Parts of New Jersey have deep-red enclaves and the southern shoreline in particular draws tourists and summer homeowners from neighboring Pennsylvania, a key swing state. Biden, meanwhile, opened his weekend with a series of fundraising events on the West Coast. He avoided Trump's legal challenges as he has done consistently while addressing donors in Seattle. Instead, the Democratic president focused on Trump's recent interview with Time magazine in which the Republican former president said states should be left to determine whether to prosecute women for abortions or to monitor their pregnancies. Saturday's visit to the New Jersey Shore resort wasn't Trump's first. While president, Trump held a rally there in January 2020 to thank Van Drew, the New Jersey congressman who had just left the Democratic Party for the GOP as a rebuke for the former president's first impeachment. Trump drew a crowd at the time that lined the streets, filled bars and supported numerous vendors in what is usually a sleepy city in the winter. This time, the summer season is around the corner for the resort known for its wide beaches and boardwalk games and shops.

Remote tribal villagers in ASR district plead for transportation facility

VISAKHAPATNAM : In preparation for the upcoming elections on May 13, tribal communities residing in Thattapudi, Chindulapadu, and Peda Buruga villages of Alluri Sitarama Raju district are appealing to district authorities and the election commission for transportation facilities to enable them to cast their votes conveniently. These remote hilltop villages, situated in the Pinakota panchayat of Ananthagiri mandal, house approximately 80 eligible voters. To reach their designated polling stations in Chintapaka village, residents must undertake a challenging trek spanning 15km (30 km up and down) through dense forests. From Chintapaka, they still face an additional 4-km journey to reach their respective polling booths in Pinakota and Koraparthi. Expressing the villagers sentiments, one resident stated, The lack of road facilities to our hilltop villages forces us to navigate through dense forests until we reach Chintapaka. Therefore, we earnestly request the district authorities to organise transportation from Chintapaka to our designated polling stations. Without this assistance, we would have to endure an additional 4-km walk to reach the polling booths. Providing transportation would not only save us valuable time but also conserve our energy, ensuring our ability to exercise our voting rights effectively. This plea echoes similar appeals made by other tribal communities in the region, such as the 342 residents of Dyatri, Madrebu, and Tunisibu villages, who require a 60-km horseback journey to vote in the elections. Additionally, 40 tribal individuals from Kalyan Gummi village in Gumma panchayat also petitioned district authorities for assistance. Thanks to the intervention of Paderu ITDA Project Officer V Abishek, the authorities have been directed to verify the routes and arrange transportation for these tribal communities. Consequently, the villagers will be provided with transportation facilities, ensuring their ability to cast their votes with ease.

Kadapa LS: YSRC candidate Avinash Reddy says he banks on his good image in public life

Anantapur : Many leaders of Rayalaseema are rough in their dealings and have the legacy of the Palegar culture, but Kadapa MP, YS Avinash Reddy, is made of a different mettle. His soft nature and affable manners with those who meet him with grievances are his plus points in public life. He calls everyone Anna (brother), to cement this personal bond. Despite facing a series of attacks from his sister and APCC chief YS Sharmila, who accused him of a role in the YS Vivekananda Reddy murder, Avinash Reddy remains cool. Many see this as a winning strategy in successive polls. Avinash Reddy, even as he initiated steps to solve many issues including the Kadapa district head quarter issues and issues of other assembly segments, he has given importance to the local MLAs in their respective constituencies without trying to spread his weight around. As the LS candidate of the YSRC in Kadapa, Avinash Reddy is facing a triangular contest involving TD candidate C Bhupesh Reddy and Congress candidate and his sister YS Sharmila. Asserted Avinash Reddy, I have not indulged in any criminal activity and never spoke ill of my political rivals. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, he said he has been involved in solving the grievances of the people of Kadapa LS constituency and Pulivendula assembly segment, as their incharge for the past five years. On the exclusive development of Kadapa airport, Avinash Reddy said the decades-old airport has been the air-link for the people of Rayalaseema region. The airport is designed to accommodate 700 passengers along with night landing facilities. The airport terminal is designed on lines similar to the Gandikota fort, the grand canyon of South, to resemble the historic notes of 1153, he said. Referring to Kadapas development, Avinash Reddy said that about `2400 crore of state and central funds were spent on massive development of the district headquarters, with erection of the ring road, flyovers and amusement parks in the past five years. Kadapa district got a boost as the major irrigation source of GNSS project is connected to Gandikota and Chitravati reservoirs, supplementary lift irrigation channels have improved ground water sources and dry lands have turned into orchards in remote areas. Being incharge of Pulivendula assembly segment, Avinash Reddy claimed there was huge development in all sectors through the Pulivendula Urban Development Authority. Pulivendula now stood as a model for the state, he said. As for the pending Railway line between Kadapa and Bengaluru, which could be helpful to thousands of people including software techies and other professionals, the YSRC candidate said he has submitted a representation to the railway minister to sanction a new railway line with modifications so as to reduce distance between the two cities, and stressed that it would lessen the burden on both states vis-a-vis the cost of land acquisition. We ensured a boost to the tourism sector by concentrating on Gandikota, he said. Reacting to the verbal attack on him by APCC chief YS Sharmila vis--vis the Viveka murder case, Avinash made it clear that he had no role in it and the people of Kadapa knew him well. I had explained the facts of the case to the people of Kadapa who see me as a representative of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, he said. Avinash Reddy said he had never encouraged quarrels, faction-related crimes and, instead, directed police stations to solve issues on merit, irrespective of who are involved in those.

Indian markets close marginally up as sectoral indices gain

Indian markets close marginally up as sectoral indices gain Indian stock markets experienced a slight gain during Friday's session following a slump in stock indices on Thursday. The Nifty 50 index rose by 0.44 percent to close at 22,055, while the Sensex gained 260.3 points to close at 72,664.47. With the exception of the IT, Realty, PSU Bank, and Bank sectors, all other sectoral indices recorded gains. The Metal, Oil & Gas, FMCG, and Auto sectors led the upward trend. This week has two words to describe it: Jittery and Volatile. Jittery foreign investors kept pressing large outflows. India Vix went up for a 12th day to a 19-week high said Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market expert. He further added We still feel given this is mostly Elections related jitters, this will continue till June 1 when exit polls come and then June 4 will see markets looking ahead and rallying. Three weeks of pain incoming. Brace yourself for more pain. Unfortunate but probable. In the Nifty 50 list, BPCL, Power Grid, NTPC, Hero Motocorp, and Eicher Motors emerged as the top gainers, while TCS, Cipla, LTIM, Kotak Bank, and Infosys were among the top losers. According to market statistics from the NSE, a total of 2,703 stocks traded on the exchange, with 1,660 closing in the green, 926 declining, and 117 remaining unchanged. Indian markets largely remained positive; however, a trend of sell-on rally is emerging given domestic premium valuation and election jitters creeping in the minds of investors given lower voter turnout. said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services He further added, Financials remained weak on account of signs of contraction in NIMs and the RBI's regulatory actions. FIIs continue to remain sellers given delays in rate cuts, inflationary concerns, moderation in corporate earnings, and premium valuation. Apart from US consumer and inflation data, the possibility of US tariff actions on Chinese EV companies will attract market attention. The broader market indices closed in the green during Friday's session, with Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap Select emerging as notable gainers after gaining more than 1 percent. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned net sellers in Indian stocks lately, with NSDL data showing cumulative sales worth Rs 8,671 crore in April and Rs 10,413 crore so far in May. In the commodities market, oil prices extended gains for a third consecutive day, supported by key technical levels, while gold prices rose after a notable increase the previous day. WTI Crude oil futures extended gains amid optimism on Chinese and US demand, with Chinese crude oil imports increasing in April, signaling improving demand. Meanwhile, a surge in US weekly jobless claims bolstered expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts this year. (ANI)

Periyanaickenpalayam flyover in Coimbatore has no facility to drain water out

COIMBATORE: Waterlogging on the newly commissioned Periyanaickenpalayam flyover in Coimbatore city during rain hinders the smooth flow of traffic, say motorists. They alleged that the flyover in Periyanaickenpalayam town has no proper provisions for draining of rainwater from the flyover. The flyover connecting Vidyalaya and Vannankovil was officially inaugurated in March after a trial run that commenced last December. Several motorists reported they experienced difficulties in the Periyanaickenpalayam area in the recent summer shower. S Satyanarayanan, a commuter from Nanjundapuram in Coimbatore, said, I was driving back with my family from Kotagiri to Coimbatore on May 4. It was raining almost throughout the journey. At 5 pm, we were on the recently commissioned Perinaickenpalyam flyover. There was heavy waterlogging on the flyover. All vehicles were seen avoiding the waterlogging and drove on the right side even when vehicles were coming in the opposite direction. The entire surface of the flyover was inundated in rainwater. Water had collected on the flyover soon after the rain on Thursday morning too. CM Jayaraman, a social activist, demanded the district administration to look into the issue immediately and rectify the drainage system in the flyover. When contacted, R Muralidharan, Assistant Divisional Engineer of the National Highways Wing of the State Highways Department, said, To drain rain water, holes have been provided in required places and 1.5 meter drainage pipes have been installed on the flyover. We inspected the place after the complaint and found that the holes were choked with sediments and dried tree leafs. Those were removed and it will be cleaned up periodically. The flyover is 1.85 km long and 17.5 meters wide. It was built at a cost of Rs 115 crore.

US Republican attorneys general sue to stop EPA's carbon rule

US Republican attorneys general sue to stop EPA's carbon rule Republican attorneys general from 27 U.S. states and an electric utility trade group sued the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday, seeking to block a landmark rule requiring sweeping reductions in carbon emissions from existing coal-fired power plants and new natural gas plants. The rule, finalized by President Joe Biden's administration last month as part of an effort to combat climate change, was challenged in three lawsuits filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, including one by 25 states spearheaded by West Virginia and Indiana, another by Ohio and Kansas and a third by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The rule mandates that many new gas and existing coal plants reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2032. The requirements are expected to force the U.S. power industry to install billions of dollars' worth of emissions control technologies or shut down the dirtiest facilities running on coal. The regulations are part of Bidens broader climate agenda and target a sector that is responsible for nearly a quarter of the country's greenhouse gas pollution. The EPA declined to comment. West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said in a statement that the regulations are based on emissions reduction technologies that have not been meaningfully deployed in the real world, exceed the EPA's authority under the Clean Air Act, and would radically transform the nations energy grid without explicit congressional permission to do so. He said the rule is setting up the plants to fail and therefore shutter, altering the nations already stretched grid. National Rural Electric Cooperative Association CEO Jim Matheson, whose organization represents nearly 900 local electric cooperatives, said in a statement that the rule is unlawful, unreasonable and unachievable. The lawsuit came a day after 23 Republican attorneys general from states including West Virginia, North Dakota and Texas challenged a different EPA rule that limits the amount of mercury and other hazardous pollutants that can be emitted from power plants. Legal experts say the EPA's assertion that the emissions reductions are feasible if power plants install carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies - which capture emissions before they are released into the atmosphere - is likely to be a major issue in the litigation. The Clean Air Act requires the EPA to set standards that are attainable using technologies that are adequately demonstrated. But while the EPA said it believes CCS is viable and cost-effective, opponents say the technology is not ready to be deployed at power plants across the country. CCS has been installed at dozens of facilities that process various fuels, but just four coal-fired power globally have CCS installed, according to the Global CCS Institute. Theyve taken a pretty aggressive view of what it means to have something be adequately demonstrated, and I just think the Supreme Court will look at this and say EPA is out over its skis, said Jeff Holmstead, a lawyer at the law firm Bracewell and a former EPA official during the administration of Republican former President George W. Bush. But supporters say billions of dollars in funding in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act will make CCS cost effective, and the Clean Air Act is designed to force technological advances. The law was developed to make sure these newer and yet-to-be-deployed technologies are deployed, said Jay Duffy, a lawyer at the Center for Applied Environmental Law and Policy.

Gwalior has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. There is a history hidden behind the name of Gwalior city. Surajsen, who became a king in the sixth century, once was on his deathbed suffering from an unknown disease, then a saint named Gwalipa cured him and gave him life. The foundation of this city was laid in his honor and it was named Gwalior. It is said that 83 descendants of Surajsen Pal ruled the fort, but the 84th, named Tej Karan, lost it. Apart from being a mighty warrior, Mansingh was also a lover of fine arts and knowledgeable about architectural styles. His reign is called the golden age of Gwalior. The past still vibrates in the huge chambers of this fort.
