Modi charisma would help BJP increase number of seats in Bengal: Sukanta Majumdar

KOLKATA: BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday expressed confidence that the saffron party would increase its share of seats in the state from the current 18. While taking part in the Express Dialogues, an initiative of this newspaper, Majumdar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's charisma would help the party transform the losing seats into winning seats. He said that BJP's ground level workers strength in Bengal has increased considerably since 2014. Majumdar also claimed that BJP is the only alternative before the people of West Bengal. In 2024, the only alternative before the people of West Bengal is the BJP, he said, adding that for more than 40 years, starting with the Left Front government, the state has not seen any substantial development when it comes to industries and as a result there was no creation of jobs. The need of the hour is to create more jobs for the people. Now in Bengal I saw many graduates are plying e rickshaws in small towns in Bengal and if you interact with them you will come to know that there are no jobs, he said. #KolkataDialogues | 'Politics should not govern society, society should govern politics': West Bengal BJP President @DrSukantaBJP talks about unemployment, #PMModi 's schemes, industrial growth, and much more. pic.twitter.com/gOJl3Et3ku The New Indian Express (@NewIndianXpress) May 5, 2024 Majumdar said that Bengal needs rapid industrialisation and a clear cut industrial policy which the TMC government has failed to provide. He dubbed the TMC government as corrupt which was bent on misleading people. To a question relating to a TMC sting video showing a Sandeshkhali BJP functionary admitting that many of the charges, including that of rape, were levelled following instructions from BJP leaders including Suvendu Adhikari, Majumdar replied, It is not clear whether the video was fake or real. Gangadhar Kayl, the BJP leader allegedly in the video, swiftly responded by filing a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), claiming manipulation through Artificial Intelligence (AI). To another query, he said all the demands of the Matua community and the Gorkhas will be fulfilled by the BJP government in due course of time.

Discrepancies in probe into Rohith Vemula's death, will ensure justice: Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Sunday said there were many discrepancies in the investigation conducted previously into Rohith Vemula's death in 2016 and asserted that its government in Telangana will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice for his family. Police in Telangana have filed a closure report before a court in its probe into the death of Rohith Vemula, a student of the University of Hyderabad, claiming he was not a Dalit and died by suicide in 2016 as he feared that his eal caste would be discovered. Congress general secretary, organisation, K C Venugopal, said Rohith Vemula's death was a grave atrocity that completely exposed the anti-Dalit mindset of the BJP. The Congress, including Rahul Gandhi ji, has stood with Rohith Vemula's family through this difficult period, he said in a post on X. As has been clarified by the Telangana Police, the closure report concerned was prepared in June 2023, Venugopal said. There were many discrepancies in the investigation conducted previously. The Congress government in Telangana will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice for Rohith's family, he asserted. The Congress came to power in the state last year by defeating the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Not only that, when we form a government at the Centre, we will pass a Rohith Vemula Act, specifically addressing the issue of caste and communal atrocities on campuses to ensure no student coming from socio-economic backwardness has to face the same plight as Rohith ever again, he said. Venugopal's remarks came a day after Rohith Vemula's mother Radhika Vemula met Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in Hyderabad and urged him to see to it that justice is done to the family. Reddy assured her that an investigation would be conducted again into the University of Hyderabad student's suicide in 2016 and that justice would be done. The chief minister assured that a fair and transparent investigation would be conducted further, Rohith Vemula's brother Raja Vemula said. Talking to reporters on Saturday evening at the University of Hyderabad, Rohith Vemula's mother Radhika Vemula took exception to the observation in the closure report that her son did not belong to the Scheduled Castes (SC). My son belongs to SC. I am a Dalit. How can police say that my son is not SC. Police don't enquire about caste (it is not their job). That is a false campaign, she had said. She also found fault with an argument that Rohith Vemula died because he did not excel in studies. Her son excelled in studies, she claimed. Telangana DGP Ravi Gupta has already announced to conduct further investigation into the case in view of the doubts expressed by Rohith Vemula's mother and others on the closure report.

Crops are withering in Telangana: K Chandrasekhar Rao

ADILABAD: Hitting out at the state government, BRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday said people are facing drinking water issues, irrigation problems and power cuts within five months of Congress assuming power in the state. Campaigning for party Peddapalli Lok Sabha seat nominee Koppula Eshwar in Mancherial, the former chief minister said that crops in lakhs of acres were drying up. He also attacked Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy saying that the latter wanted to make people forget his contribution to the state by merging Mancherial, Kumurambheem Asifabad and Nirmal districts with Adilabad. Can Revanth remove KCR from the soul and face of Telangana, he asked amid claps and shouts from the gathering. The BRS government helped realise the long-pending demand of Mancherial districts. People should protest against this decision by voting against the Congress, KCR added. The former chief minister also shared that he took part in agitations for more than 15 years, which helped Telangana achieve separate statehood. Alleging that the government was looking to privatise the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), the BRS chief claimed that Revanth was going to hand it over to the Adani Group. Revanth met Adani in Davos during the World Economic Forum and agreed to the latters proposal for privatisation, he alleged. Now, Revanth will import coal from Australia through Adani, KCR added.

HYDERABAD: Accusing Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of spreading rumours that the BJP would scrap reservations in the country if it returned to power, the BJP on Saturday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India seeking a bar on campaigning by the TPCC chief. A BJP delegation, led by G Premender Reddy, met ECI officials and submitted a copy of their complaint. HYDERABAD: Predicting a coalition government at the Centre, former minister T Harish Rao on Saturday alleged that Congress and BJP have struck a secret deal to win eight Lok Sabha seats each of the 17 in Telangana. The BRS leader also said that the Congress should seek votes only after implementing its six guarantees. The Congress bond paper has bounced. Harish participated in a meet the press programme organised by Telangana Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ) here. He alleged that there was no governance in the state since the chief minister was focused on revenge politics. The Congress failed to fulfil its promises made during the Assembly elections. The Congress said in its manifesto that it was against defections, but after coming to power, it is encouraging defections, the former minister said He said that people hailing from residuary Andhra Pradesh want Hyderabad to be continued as a common capital for both states. Revanth Reddy has Andhra roots. People of Telangana should be alert. BJP and Congress gave seven mandals from Telangana to AP for political reasons. People want the BRS to win to protect the interests of Telangana. Protecting the interests of the state is only possible with the BRS, the former minister said. BRS wont join NDA or INDIA: KTR

HYDERABAD/ RAJANNA-SIRCILLA: Claiming that the people of India will reject both the BJP and Congress, BRS working president KT Rama Rao said the pink party would not join either the NDA or INDIA bloc after the Lok Sabha elections. There are 13 major political parties not aligned with either of the major coalitions who will hold the key to who forms the next government in New Delhi, he said. Addressing a public meeting after roadshows in Malkajgiri segment on Saturday, the Sircilla MLA said the image of the city would be completely destroyed due to communal tensions if the BJP were to be elected. For peace and growth of the city, vote for the BRS, he said. Additionally, stating that the Congress was not in a position to challenge the BJP anywhere in the country, Rama Rao mentioned that only regional parties can counter the saffron party in the Lok Sabha elections. In the Assembly polls, it was not the Congress, but the BRS, which defeated the BJP MPs who were nominated for state elections, he said. The BRS working president also criticised Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and questioned his decision to run away to Kerala instead of fighting the BJP in his stronghold Amethi. Rama Rao also accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of conspiring with the BJP and fielding weak candidates against them. He said that if BRS secures over 10 Lok Sabha seats, it will voice all concerns of Telangana people in Parliament. The BRS working president alleged that despite being a Congress chief minister, Revanth was toeing the line of BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, not Rahul Gandhi. He also took a swipe at Modi saying that the latter was resorting to cheap politics and campaigning to gain more Lok Sabha seats by provoking people on religious lines. Reorganisation of districts Earlier in the day, Rama Rao, addressing the media in Sircilla, said Revanth has done nothing but make unnecessary statements in the last four-and-a-half years. He alleged that the state was in the control of a single unstable person. Claiming that Revanth was trying to undo the good work of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, he said the BRS government created new districts and named them after prominent personalities, but the Congress wanted to remove them. Rama Rao said the decentralisation of administration helps execute the welfare schemes in villages. He said the BRS would hold public protests if Revanth changed the layout of the state. Congress leaders are saying that one district should be enough per Lok Sabha segment. They should clarify which districts would be removed of the 33 in the state, he added.

BRS leaders stir the pot with comments on Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: BRS leaders, especially partys working president KT Rama Rao and former minister T Harish Rao, have stirred the political cauldron in the state with their recent statements regarding the status of Hyderabad after June 2. It all began with Rama Rao claiming that the BJP would make Hyderabad a Union Territory if it is returned to power at the Centre. Given the fact that there was not even a mention regarding the status of Hyderabad in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, Rama Raos statement sparked speculation within political circles. Meanwhile, Harish Rao suggested that the BJP could continue Hyderabad as a common capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. As per the AP Reorganisation Act, Hyderabad will remain a common capital for both the states for 10 years after bifurcation. This period will conclude on June 2. Harish also accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of clandestinely supporting the common capital idea as he has ties to Andhra Pradesh. While there is no proof of the claims by the BRS leaders, the fact that they are being repeated has led to analysts wondering about the motive behind these statements. Interestingly, both the BJP and Congress have preferred to remain silent on these comments, fueling speculation. Analysts say that extending Hyderabads common capital status is unlikely without amendments to the AP Reorganisation Act. They believe that Rama Raos Union Territory claim is merely a political tactic. Meanwhile, the BRS leaders continue to repeat these statements, hoping to get public support. Whether they are able to swing the voters in the favour of the BRS is a question that can only be answered when the votes are counted.

Strategy-wise, Telangana BJP way ahead of its rivals

HYDERABAD: With the Lok Sabha elections looming large and campaigning reaching a crescendo, the Telangana unit of the BJP is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to connect with voters at the grassroots level. The party has intensified its ground-level campaigning while its leaders monitor daily reports on the situation and issue instructions to candidates and in-charges. Election management wings have been established at the state headquarters. These wings are going through updates on the progress of campaigning efforts and voter outreach. The party is maintaining a database of beneficiaries of Union government schemes over the past decade. Booth committee members are now approaching them and seeking support for the partys candidates. The party workers are knocking the door of every beneficiary with pamphlets and copies of the BJP manifesto highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modis guarantees and the developmental work done of the past decade. Simultaneously, the party is cracking down on any negligence in the campaign, with the national leadership issuing warnings whenever needed. Additionally, BJP leaders appointed as in-charges for each Lok Sabha constituency are providing feedback on campaign progress and gauging public sentiment. Party leaders say that the in-charges are working tirelessly to ensure the success of Modis and Amit Shahs rallies in the state. Senior BJP leaders are closely monitoring developments from the party headquarters, addressing any issues at the ground level in real-time. The national leadership is optimistic that the party would achieve its target of winning eight to 10 of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state. According to party sources, BJP candidates have an edge 12 constituencies Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Medak, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad, Zaheerabad, Chevella, Mahbubnagar, Bhongir, Warangal and Nagarkurnool. Senior leaders told TNIE that despite the challenge from their rivals, the BJP expects a favourable result in most constituencies, and has a clear advantage in eight constituencies with less than 10 days left for polling. The remaining four are too close to call, given the fact that the contest is triangular in these seats.

Extended weekend, lack of info led to low voter turnout in Bengaluru: Panel

BENGALURU: From extended weekends to voter apathy, lack of information on candidates contesting to the timing of the poll day were discussed on Friday to find reasons for low poll percentage in Bengaluru Urban district (BBMP limits), which voted on April 26 in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The online discussion -- Low polling percentage in Bengaluru Urban district (BBMP) during Lok Sabha General Election 2024, what are the root causes? -- was organised by the Bangalore Political Action Committee (BPAC). The Voter Turnout Ratio (VTR) in Bengaluru Urban district decreased from 56.01% to 53.96% over the past decade (20142024), encompassing six elections. Dr Sandeep Shastri, the National Coordinator of the Lokniti Network, highlighted significant findings on Bengalurus voter turnout. He noted that except for the 1977 Lok Sabha election, where the turnout exceeded 60%, Bengaluru has consistently experienced lower voter participation, typically hovering around the 50% range. In six elections, turnout fell below the 50% mark. Recent surveys have revealed that a substantial number of registered voters either live outside the city or prefer to cast their votes in their hometowns rather than in Bengaluru, Shashtri mentioned. Vikram Rai, president, Bangalore Apartment Federation (BAF), presented the federations analysis on baseline errors in the electoral roll. He pointed out instances where registered voters within apartment complexes frequently change their residences, both within and outside the city, yet the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) fail to synchronise with citizens, leading to inaccuracies in the electoral roll. He emphasised the need for better coordination between BLOs and citizens to refine the enumeration process and address the high potential for inaccuracies, including the failure to remove outdated names from the roll. Sudheendra MG, the KPCC spokesperson, highlighted several issues regarding voter participation. As the block president of Mahalakshmi Layout, he noted that alongside voter apathy, there is a prevailing belief among the electorate that their individual votes hold little significance. Moreover, political parties are perceived to be less active in mobilizing voters to the polling stations compared to their efforts prior to the 1990s. Sudheendra also pointed out a specific case in Booth No 80, where discrepancies were found in the electoral rolls, with a significant number of families having shifted out of the area yet still listed as voters. He suggested that the Booth Level Agents (BLA) of parties should collaborate with BBMP officials to rectify such inaccuracies, improving the accuracy of voter turnout rates. Kaveri Kedarnath, former mandal president of Malleswaram from BJP, recounted her experience at Booth No 187 in the Malleswaram Assembly Constituency (ward 76 Gayatri Nagar). She observed that out of 996 voters, 40 had passed away, while 232 had relocated within or outside the constituency. Despite these changes, BLOs had not acted to update the voter information. She emphasised that while registering as a new voter is relatively straightforward, the process of shifting ones vote within or outside the Assembly constituency is more complex. Therefore, many individuals opt to re-register as new voters instead.

Hundreds of Bhatkal expats fly home to vote

BHATKAL/BENGALURU : Hundreds of people from Bhatkal, who are working in West Asia, are returning home just to exercise their franchise on May 7. This, it is said to be in response to the appeal by Bhatkal Tanzeem. It is learnt that the travel expenses of these voters are met by the Tanzeem. Taking a cue from Kerala, where a large number of residents who are working abroad, came down to vote, the Tanzeem has appealed to the people of Bhatkal, who are working abroad, to return home and exercise their franchise without fail. Bhatkal comes under the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency. BJP candidate Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said he was told that the Tanzeem pays the travel expenses of those who come to Bhatkal to vote. We are keeping a tab on it. If we find any such thing, we will complain to the Election Commission, he said. However, Inayathullah Shabandari, president of Majlise Islah Wa Tanzeem, Bhatkal, said the Tanzeem has no role in this. Many of them are coming to India now just to vote. They are coming on their own, bearing the expenses themselves. Most of them are rich. Only for those, who are not financially sound but are willing to come to vote, there are Tanzeems and Jamaats representing our people across West Asia. They have agreed to help them to an extent. We have branches of the Jamaat in Dubai, Mumbai and other places. It is in the interest of democracy, he told TNIE. We decided to appeal to our people after we saw Keralites working in West Asia participating in the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala in large numbers. About 40,000 people visited Kerala just to vote. We do not have such big numbers, ours will be in hundreds, he said. He said he is not sure how many will come and vote from West Asia. Around 15,000 people from Bhatkal are in Dubai, Jeddah, Qatar, Kuwait and other countries in West Asia. We hope at least 10% of them will come and vote, Inayathullah said.

BJP finds faults in Rohini Acharyas poll affidavit

PATNA : Rohini Acharya, the RJD nominee and daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, has found herself embroiled in controversy following objections raised by BJP leaders against her nomination filed with the returning officer for Bihars Saran Lok Sabha seat. Leading the objection is SD Sanjay, the in-charge of the BJP legal cell, who formally lodged complaints with the returning officer of the Saran Lok Sabha constituency and the Election Commission of India. They have urged the relevant authorities to scrutinize the documents thoroughly. In their complaints, BJP leaders alleged that Rohini Acharya misrepresented her income and movable assets in both her income tax return and affidavit. According to her affidavit, while Acharya claims to possess movable and immovable assets worth Rs 15.82 crore, her husband purportedly holds assets valued at Rs 19.86 crore. Additionally, Rohini declares having Rs 20 lakh in cash on hand, whereas her husband states possession of Rs 10 lakh. Rent is cited as the primary source of income in the affidavit. Sanjay, who also practices as an advocate at the Patna High Court, asserts that Acharya withheld crucial information in her affidavit, including her true address, nationality (as an NRI), and the source of income used to acquire a luxury flat worth Rs. 25 crore in Mumbai. Contrary to her declaration, Acharyas actual residence is in Singapore, not Kautilya Nagar, Patna. Her nomination papers were submitted on April 29, with her father, former railway minister Lalu Prasad.

Outsider, insider slug it out for Khagaria battle

KHAGARIA : With the return of Left after nearly a three-decade hiatus in the Lok Sabha fray, the Khagaria constituency in Bihar is witnessing an exciting but challenging fight between two young debutants -- Rajesh Verma of NDA-supported LJP (RV) and Sanjay Kumar Kushwaha representing Mahagathbandhan partner CPM. Both the contestants are young, first-timers in the race for the parliamentary polls and belong to two dominant OBC castes -- Kushwaha and Sonar (goldsmith). While Kushwaha is the third dominant community in Khagaria after Muslim and Yadav communities, Sonar ranks fifth. Amid heightened electioneering, flags either red (Left) or bearing the image of a helicopter -- LJP (RV) adorn main points in the city and rural areas. Curtains on the electioneering will come down on May 5 evening for facilitating polls on May 7 in the third phase. The land of makka (maize, which is the prime crop of this district) now is flooded with the red flags virtually turning it into a Red-land, said Ravindera Sharma, a local Hindi teacher. With both the candidates being greenhorns, the senior leaders of both the political blocks - NDA and the Mahagathbandhan -- are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the victory of their candidates. While the NDAsupported LJP candidate Rajesh Verma is banking upon the vote bank for BJP and JDU as per the set social- -engineering of NDA, Sanjay Kumar Kushwaha (CPM) of the Mahagathbandhan is relying on RJDs MY(Muslim Yadav) equation with an additional back up from Kushwaha and Mallah communities. Mukesh Sahni -- who heads the VSIP (Vikashsheel Insaan party), is back with RJD in Mahagatbandhan. The CPIM, which once had a stronghold across the Khagaria, expects vast votes from the Mallah (fishermen)community. Twelve candidates are in the fray from various castes for this seat. Apart from LJP and CPM, the BSP has also fielded Dr Ravi Kumar, besides other candidates, including three independents. In the last two elections with Narendra Modi as the poll mascot of NDA, the united LJP, as part of the NDA, had fielded a Muslim candidate, Chaudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser, who won the seat in 2014 and 2019 polls. The locals say, The fight is tough between Kushwaha and Verma. Despite Verma hailing from the goldsmith community, Kushwaha appears to be giving him tough competition as the seat has a dominant population of Yadav and Muslim voters. Development issues have taken a backseat while the caste equations and their polarisation emerged as the deciding factor. Kushwaha constitutes the third most populous community here, but what has given Verma a tough time is his being an outsider in the district. Khagaria has around 18 lakh voters, with the Muslims alone accounting for around 3 lakh electorate, Yadav 2.6 lakh and Kushwaha 1.5 lakh. The fourth deciding population in Khagaria is Mallah (fishermen), about 2 lakh, and this time Viksasheel Insaan Party, led by Mukesh Sahni, is with RJD-led Mahagatbandhan. Naturally, 50 to 60% votes of this community are likely to go to the CPM candidate, claimed Roshan Paswan, who runs a private coaching centre. An issue of Outsider versus insider has gripped the landscape of Khagaria. Verma is not as much known to the people as Sanjay Kumar. But what makes the people not overlook Verma is that LJP has fielded him. Khagaria is the home district of Chirag Paswan, said social activist Surendra Yadav. Khagaria has earned the distinction of being the only Bihar seat won by NDAs Muslim face in 2019. Now, after denying the ticket, sitting MP Chaudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser has deserted LJP and joined RJD. Though he is not contesting, he leaves no stone unturned to ensure the victory of CPM candidate Sanjay Kumar. Kaiser was elected twice from this Yadav and Muslim-dominated LS seat-first in 2014 and 2019 on the ticket of the then-united Lok Janshakti Party. Of Khagarias 18 lakh voters, an estimated 2.25 lakh are Muslims, followed by 2.5 lakh Yadav voters and over one lakh each from Kushwaha and Mallah communiti es. If CPM candidate manages to cut into the votes of his casteKushwaha--, it will be easier for him to win the elections, said Bharat Kumar Kushwaha, a resident of Alouli. Key issue Flood has emerged as an issue in the region. People have complained against the failure of government in bringing a permanent solution to it. More than 5 blocks are flood prone in Khagaria. Over 5-6 lakh people are affected every year. Total villages: 36 Total voters: 18L Male : 8,83,786 Female : 7,83,100 Religious communities include Hindus (89.21%), followed by Muslims (10.53%. Among others were Christian (0.08%), Sikh (0.01%) and Jain (0.01%)

Heat rises, political divide sharpens in MPs nine seats

BHOPAL : After a lower polling compared to the 2019 polls in the first two phases, the ongoing Lok Sabha elections move into the third phase into Madhya Pradeshs Gwalior-Chambal region infamous for lower voter turnout, extremely high summer temperatures and politics divided sharply on caste lines. Four of the nine seats which will vote on May 7 are Gwalior-Chambal regions seats, including Guna, Bhind-SC, Morena and Gwalior, which saw a close contest between BJP and Congress in the 2023 assembly polls. Four seats, Vidisha, Rajgarh, state capital Bhopal and Betul-ST form part of the central MP, which emerged as the best region for the BJP in state polls, while one seat Sagar forms part of the Bundelkhand region. All nine seats were won by BJP. The May 7 contest will see three political bigwigs, including two former CMs Digvijaya Singh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, returning to their home parliamentary seats after 33 and 20 years respectively, while union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia who won the Guna seat four times between 2002 and 2014, before losing it in 2019 to a BJP first-timer, is contesting to wrest his seat. In Rajgarh, 1984 and 1991 winner and 1989 loser Digvijaya Singh is faced with the uphill task of retaining the central MP seat against second-time sitting MP Rodmal Nagar, who won the seat defeating Singhs loyalist Mona Sustani (now in BJP) by 4.31 lakh votes in 2019. Singh is particularly banking on his old links across the constituency spread in three districts as well as the high anti-incumbency against the sitting BJP MP. In the adjoining Vidisha constituency (a saffron citadel), five-times winner Shivraj Singh Chouhan (he won in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004) is not just eyeing the sixth win from the seat spread in four districts (including Chouhans home district Sehore), but is actually targeting highest winning margin in the country against Congress septuagenarian Pratap Bhanu Sharma. In Rajgarh and Vidishas neighbourhood, union minister and four-times former Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia is making all possible efforts across the eight assembly segments-strong Guna constituency to regain his lost glory from the seat, where he suffered shock defeat against own protg and first-time BJP candidate Dr KP Yadav by 1.25 lakh votes in 2019. Contesting for the first time as BJP nominee, Scindia faces a Yadav caste candidate Rao Yadvendra Singh Yadav, who hails from an old BJP family. The three other seats of Gwalior-Chambal region are turning out to be a real challenge for the ruling BJP, whose candidates, including first-time sitting MP Sandhya Rai (Bhind-SC) and ex-MLAs Bharat Singh Kushwah (Gwalior), Shiv Mangal Tomar (Morena) are not just faced with anti-incumbency, but also apprehensive of their own cadres. The Congress candidates from these three seats, including sitting MLA Phool Singh Baraiya (Bhind-SC) and ex-MLAs Nitu Sikarwar (Morena) and Pravin Pathak (Gwalior) are hoping to succeed based on the right caste balance and differences within the BJP. In Bhind, the BSP candidate and 2019 Congress loser Devashish Jariaria and in Morena the BSP candidate Ramesh Garg may damage the poll prospects of Congress and BJP candidates respectively. In the state capital Bhopal, however, the BJP seems to have an edge, owing to the recent assembly polls performance (it won 6 out of the 8 assembly segments), as its candidate former Bhopal mayor Alok Sharma takes on Congress Bhopal rural district president Arun Srivastava, who is banking on his clout among the 2 lakh plus Kayastha voters. But Srivastava has a mountain to climb in the constituency, which has been a BJP bastion since 1989. The Betul-ST seat is set to witness a rerun of the 2019 polls, as the first-time BJP MP DD Uike takes on Congresss Ramu Tekam. Uike who defeated Tekam by 3.60 lakh votes in 2019, still seems to be in a strong position owing to better grassroots connection with voters in the constituency spread in three districts. Sagar seat of Bundelkhand region which is spread in two districts, Sagar and Vidisha and is being won by the BJP since 1996 has new BJP face Lata Wankhede taking on Congresss high-flying and wealthy candidate Guddu Raja Bundela, who hails from a politically powerful Bundela Kshatriya family of adjoining UP. While Vidhan Sabha speaker Narendra Singh Tomars loyalists Bharat Singh Kushwah and Shiv Mangal Tomar are in the fray from Gwalior and Morena seats respectively despite losing previous assembly polls, three Shivraj Singh Chouhan loyalists, among them Alok Sharma, Late Wankhede and Rodmal Nagar are in fray from Bhopal, Sagar and Rajgarh seats respectively. A breakup of 2023 assembly poll results reveals that out of the 72 assembly segments forming the nine LS constituencies going to polls on May 7, the BJP won 50, while the Congress emerged winner in only 22 assembly segments. In the four seats in the Gwalior-Chambal region, the contest was closer, as the BJP won 18 seats and the Congress 14.
