Kamaljeet was councillor, needs five years to learn MPs work: Mahabal Mishra

NEW DELHI: The people of Delhi know why Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested and will respond on the voting day, says AAPs West Delhi candidate Mahabal Mishra in an interview with Prabhat Shukla. Excerpts Your plans for developing the West Delhi area? The West campus of Delhi University is needed to cater to aspiring students, as it takes two and a half hours to reach the North Campus. I will work on setting up more hospitals, expanding the metro to connect Najafgarh to Dhansa, Nangloi, and Jaipur road, and procuring land to build public parking. I also plan to open a skill centre in every assembly to make youth employable How do you challenge rival Kamaljeet Sehrawat from the BJP? Her experience is limited to one year as a councillor and mayor of the SDMC. The area under a councillor is tiny, and they have no say in policymaking. On the other hand, I have been a councillor, three-time MLA, DDA member for 12 years, and an MP. I can start working from the very first day, while she will take five years to learn the ropes. Purvanchalis make up a significant share of the electorate. How confident are you of winning them? Purvanchalis had difficulty in obtaining ration cards and getting their children admitted to schools. I had fought for these rights back then. I also helped to formulate a policy for unauthorised colonies and got the Chath festival included in the pilgrimage committee besides ghats for Chath. I am sure I will reap some benefits Is the alliance between Congress and the AAP helping on the ground? I have received support from everyone associated with the INDIA bloc, including Congress party workers. We are contesting the elections as one force. Will the current turmoil within the Delhi Congress affect outcomes? In Delhi, the distribution of tickets was decided internally by each partys high command. If some individuals are unhappy with this, it is their business. I have nothing more to say. Will Kejriwals arrest impact the elections? Delhiites are deeply saddened by Kejriwals arrest. They sympathise with him and know that he is innocent. Many senior AAP leaders are behind bars, and the BJP calls your party corrupt? Your comment They (BJP) are afraid that the AAP will rise in other states over the work the done in Delhi which includes free water, electricity, healthcare and free bus travel for women besides promise of Rs 1,000 grant to every woman. So they are trying to contain this expansion by arresting Kejriwal ji. I am sure public understands the ploy. Turmoil in Congress The AAP leader stated that the distribution of tickets was decided internally by each partys leadership. Recently, former Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely stepped down from the post over giving tickets to outsiders

He ran away to Varanasi..., Mallikarjun Kharge on PM Modi's 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' remarks on Rahul Gandhi

He ran away to Varanasi..., Mallikarjun Kharge on PM Modi's 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' remarks on Rahul Gandhi Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' remarks on Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday claimed that PM Modi himself ran away to Varanasi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency on Friday. He (PM Modi) himself has run away to Varanasi, ask him, Kharge asked. After a lot of speculation, Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers from Raebareli on Friday.RaeBareli is considered a traditional stronghold of the Gandhi family. There was anticipation earlier that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from either Amethi or Raebareli, two seats in Uttar Pradesh which are prestige battles for the party. Earlier, PM Modi attacked Rahul Gandhi mockingly 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' after he decided to contest from Raebareli. Addressing a rally in the Purba Bardhaman district on Friday, PM Modi said, There's no need for an opinion poll or exit poll...I said this much earlier. I predicted on the floor of Parliament two months ago that their (Congress') biggest leader (Sonia Gandhi) would stand down from contesting these elections. And just as I had foreseen, she (resigned as the Raebareli MP and) took a seat in the Rajya Sabha from Jaipur. I also told you earlier that the Shehzada would start looking for another safe seat for himself, fearing defeat in Wayanad. He was so afraid after losing Amethi in 2019 that he bolted all the way down South, to Wayanad. Now, he has escaped to Raebareli. These people often go around telling people, 'Daro maat' (don't be afraid). It's now my turn to say the same to them--'Arey daro maat, bhaago maat' (don't be afraid! don't flee!), he added. Meanwhile, Varanasi is the stronghold of the Prime Minister who won the seat twice in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. BJP has again fielded PM Modi from Varanasi and Congress has fielded Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai. This will be the most anticipated contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Narendra Modi won the constituency in both the 2014 and 2019 general polls with a resounding majority. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi won the seat with over 674,664 votes and commanded a vote share of 63.6 per cent. Earlier in 2014, PM Modi fought on two Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat's Vadodara and the second was Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. PM Modi won the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat by securing 845,464 votes with 72.8 per cent. Congress candidate Madhusudan Mistry secured 275,336 votes with 23.7 per cent. The Varanasi seat comprises five Assembly segments including Rohaniya, Varanasi North, Varanasi South, Varanasi Cantt, Sevapuri. The voting for the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency will be held in the seventh phase of the elections on June 1. The counting of the votes will be held on June 4. (ANI)

A day after the T20 WC snub, Sandeep continues good works with Rajasthan

CHENNAI: The only thing you can control is your hard work and never give up attitude. Hours after the T20 World Cup snub, medium pacer Sandeep Sharma posted the message on Instagram on Wednesday. It's not that Sandeep, who had played only two T20Is for India that too was back in 2015, was dead sure of his selection for the marquee event. Already 30 plus, he has reached that stage of his career where such call-ups usually dry down. Despite the crude fact, hope remains and the bowler from Patiala (Punjab) too was hopeful. And why not? In his role as the death-overs specialist with the table toppers Rajasthan Royals, he had bowled one of the best spells of this season to date. He sent back Mumbai Indian batters one by one in Jaipur a few days ago bagging 5/18 from his four overs. He is also one of the three bowlers, who have claimed a five-wicket haul this season so far. The other two are Mumbai's Jasprit Bumrah and Yash Thakur of Lucknow Super Giants. What's more important is the fact that Sandeep has achieved all this while bowling with quite a good economy rate of 6.83 (by Thursday's match). Only Bumrah (6.40) and Liam Livingstone of Punjab Kings (6.22) have a better economy rate than Sandeep among the bowlers who have played five or more matches till Thursday. Given the responsibility assigned to him by the team last season, where he first went unsold before being picked up by the inaugural champions as a replacement player, Sandeep has been working mostly on slower bouncers and yorkers. Knuckle ball is another option, which he has been using efficiently. But it's not easy, especially for someone who loves to ball with the new ball in powerplays. ...the management had made it clear to me where I would be bowling majority of my overs so I worked mostly on slower bouncers and yorkers in the nets. I anyway knew I wouldn't be bowling much with the new ball because Boulty (Trent Boult) is a world-class bowler, one of the best in the world, the right-arm bowler had said after Rajasthan's last match against Lucknow. The ongoing season, however, did not startthe way Sandeep would have hoped. After the first two matches, a side strain kept him out of action for the next five matches. He returned with a bang with a Player of the Match winning performance against Mumbai. Against Lucknow, he remained economical thus making sure Rajasthan did not have to chase a target beyond 200.The good show continued on Thursday as Sandeep bowled miserly giving away 31 runs from his four overs and claimed the wicket of impact substitute and his Punjab teammate Amolpreet Singh. With others around him going for eight runs or more per over, he stuck to his plan and dried up the flow of runs at least for the first three overs he bowled. Travis Head's 44-ball 58 and Nitish Kumar Reddy's 76 off 42 apart from some late firworks from Heinrich Klaasen (42 off 19) meant SRH put up 201 runs on the board. Rajasthan agonisingly fell short by 1 run losing only the second match this season. A win would have been the cherry on the cake for Sandeep, who played his role to near perfection that too only a day after being ignored by the selectors, but it was not to be.
