BJP and Congress Spar in Crucial Third Phase of Lok Sabha Elections

New Delhi: The high-octane campaign for the third phase of Lok Sabha elections that saw the BJP-led NDA and the I.N.D.IA. bloc attacking each other on issues like reservations and sexual harassment charges against JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna concluded on Sunday in 92 seats spread over 11 states and Union Territories. The stakes are significant for the BJP in this round as the party had in 2019 won an overwhelming majority of these seats, including all in Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, that will go to polls on May 7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led the BJP charge, asking the Congress to give in writing that it will not hand over the quota for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes to Muslims. The Congress and its allies accused the BJP of trying to tamper with the Constitution and do away with reservations. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge along with party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra focused on issues of social justice, unemployment, injustice to farmers and alleged favourable treatment to select businessmen. Over 1,300 candidates, including around 120 women, are in the fray. Among the bigwigs are Union ministers Amit Shah (Gandhinagar), Mansukh Mandaviya (Porbandar), Parshottam Rupala (Rajkot), Pralhad Joshi (Dharwad) and SP Singh Baghel (Agra). The fate of former Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai (Haveri) and Badruddin Ajmal (Dhubri) will also bedecided on May 7. Several members of Mulayam Singh Yadavs family are also contesting in this phase in Uttar Pradesh. The Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (2 seats) will also go to polls in the third phase while the election in the Anatnag-Rajouri seat has been put off to the sixth phase due to logistic reasons. In Maharashtra, where 11 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats will go to polls, a riveting contest is on in Baramati between Sharad Pawars daughter Supriya Sule and Sunetra Pawar, wife of the veteran leader's estranged nephew and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. In Madhya Pradesh, four-time chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Congress veteran Digvijay Singh are seeking election from Vidisha, Guna and Rajgarh seats respectively. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Sunday reiterated that the BJP is going to win all the 11 Lok Sabha seats in the state. He said, This time, it will be 11 out of 11 in Chhattisgarh. I can say it confidently based on the feedback received from across the state. Meanwhile, in the Congress-ruled Karnataka which changed the campaigning track with the Hassan sex scandal, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah exuded confidence in the partys prospects and said, In the first phase of the election for 14 constituencies, our information and inputs from local workers indicate a potential win of 8-9 seats. Looking ahead to the second phase on May 7, we anticipate securing more than 10 seats. In total, we are poised to clinch at least 20 seats in the state.

Mahindra Susten to invest 21,000 cr in RE

Mumbai: Mahindra Susten, the renewable energy arm of the Mahindra Group, plans to invest 21,000 crore over the next five years to develop a renewable energy asset portfolio of nearly 5.5 GW. The company, with its 39% partner Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, has committed equity to build peak capacity of that order in the next four to five years. We have made a business plan of this capacity and got it approved with the shareholders, MD Deepak Thakur told ET. We are also looking at the entire green energy canvas in terms of building our portfolio of renewable energy assets which will include storage projects and round-the-clock power projects. This January, Mahindra Group and Ontario Teachers co-sponsored an infrastructure investment trust (InvIT) holding assets in the renewable energy space. Sustainable Energy Infra Trust (SEIT) has raised primary capital of 1,365 crore as part of the initial offer of units and will help facilitate the growth capital of about 21,000 crore. 109864635The company has created a simple, seamless and effective cycle to fund its growth, he said.We will never need the 21,000 crore at once. As the assets get built, the company will flip them and get the money back to create new assets, said Thakur. The company won't need to take on a heavy debt burden for a long time because of the asset flip, which will happen every three years, allowing the debt to move to the InvIT, he said. Last month, the company entered the hybrid renewable energy segment with a plan to set up a 1,200 crore, 150 MW solar wind energy project in Maharashtra. The project includes the installation of 101 MW wind and 52 MW solar capacity. The facility is expected to generate 460 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean energy, offsetting 420,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. We started out as an EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) company, building solar projects for other developers, Thakur said. However, about six years back, a decision was taken at the group level that we would start building our projects and that's when we started to participate in tenders and build about 1,540 megawatts peak (MWp) of projects.Mahindra Susten was formed in the year 2010 but the company did not make much progress in the segment until two years ago when it decided to focus on being a renewable energy developer and stop taking third-party EPC business.

BJP files complaint with ECI against Cong leader Wadettiwar for 'defaming' Ujjwal Nikam

BJP files complaint with ECI against Cong leader Wadettiwar for 'defaming' Ujjwal Nikam The BJP has written to the Election Commission of India seeking action against Congress and the opposition leader, Vijay Wadettiwar, for allegedly peddling lies and defaming its Mumbai North Central nominee and ex-26/11 prosecution lawyer Ujjwal Nikam. Wadettiwar, the leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, purportedly called Nikam an ''anti-national'' and accused him of hiding the information that then Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare wasn't killed by Kasab's bullet during the 26/11 terror attack, but fell to a bullet of a policeman affiliated to RSS. His allegations were based on the book ''Who Killed Karkare'' written by retired police officer SM Mushriff. ''As a responsible leader, the opposition leader should desist from making such comments that can help the enemy nation,'' Nikam said. Terming Wadettiwar's statements as ''false and not based on facts'', Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shekar claimed they were aimed at defaming Ujjwal Nikam and inciting emotions. ''We have written to the Election Commission of India seeking action against Wadettiwar who is a star campaigner (of Congress) and also against the Congress party for peddling lies,'' he added. Shelar further said (Ajmal) Kasab was sentenced to death for killing innocent people after following a due process of law. Kasab was the lone terrorist who was captured alive by Mumbai Police during the 26/11 terror attack by Pakistani terrorists in which at least 166 people were killed and several others were injured. Shelar wondered whether Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray supported the statement made by the Congress leader. A former special public prosecutor, Nikam had represented the state in high-profile cases like the Mumbai serial bomb blasts and the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. He is making his political foray from Mumbai North Central seat on a BJP ticket and is pitted against city Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad.

Electoral Commission Fosters Civic Engagement through Persuasion, Urges Voter Participation: Chief Electoral Commissioner Kumar

Electoral Commission Fosters Civic Engagement through Persuasion, Urges Voter Participation: Chief Electoral Commissioner Kumar Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Sunday said the Election Commission works in an ''entirely persuasive space'' where it motivates people to enrol as voters and cast their ballot because neither registration as elector nor voting is mandatory. Addressing representatives of election management bodies from 23 countries, Kumar said it would be axiomatic to say that the credibility of the processes that the EC undertakes is validated through the sheer turnout in elections and the near-saturation of electoral rolls in terms of the elector-population ratio. He also said that the contribution of the Indian electoral space, process and capacity it generates, creates huge ''democratic surpluses'' for the world. This, the CEC said, is significant amid growing concerns over shrinkage of democratic spaces worldwide. The CEC's remarks on the poll panel's functioning in an ''entirely persuasive space'' to invite people to register as voters and eventually cast their ballot come against the backdrop of voter apathy. Last week, the EC had expressed disappointment over the voter turnout in some metropolitan cities in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls, saying it was a pointer to the ''rigid levels of apathy'' in India's high-tech cities. Cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) fared no better, it had lamented. Among the 23 countries whose election management body representatives are here to observe the ongoing Lok Sabha polls are Australia, Russia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The 75 delegates will visit six states -- Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh -- in small groups to witness the elections and preparations related to them in various constituencies.

NEET Exam Irregularity: Papers Incorrectly Distributed at Rajasthan Centre, Exam Retaken for Affected Candidates

NEET Exam Irregularity: Papers Incorrectly Distributed at Rajasthan Centre, Exam Retaken for Affected Candidates Distribution of wrong question papers at a NEET exam centre in Rajasthan on Sunday led to some candidates walking out with the papers, the National Testing Agency (NTA) said, claiming the integrity of the examination process was not compromised. The exam was later reconducted for the 120 affected candidates at the centre, said Sadhna Parashar, Senior Director, NTA. According to NTA sources, some candidates were distributed question papers in languages other than their choice of medium which prompted them to walk out of the centre. ''During NEET-UG examination, it came to attention that at one exam centre, Girls Higher Secondary Model School, Mantown, Sawai Madhopur, there was an incident of incorrect distribution of question papers by the centre superintendent. Despite efforts by invigilators to prevent it, some candidates left the exam centre with the question papers,'' Parashar said. ''In order to uphold the principles of fairness and equal opportunity for all candidates, the NTA has taken proactive measures. The examination of approximately 120 affected candidates at the centre is being conducted today, ensuring that their academic aspirations are not hindered by this incident,'' she added. Several social media posts alleged the question paper was leaked. The NTA, however, denied any possibility of a leak. This year, a record 23 lakh candidates registered for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test - Undergraduate (NEET-UG), of which over 10 lakh were male students, over 13 lakh were girls and 24 students registered under the third gender category. Region-wise, Uttar Pradesh had registered the highest number of candidates at 3,39,125, followed by Maharashtra at 2,79,904 and Rajasthan at 1,96,139. Tamil Nadu saw 1,55,216 registrations and Karnataka 1,54,210. In 2023, a total of 20,87,449 candidates had registered for NEET-UG and the exam was held on May 7. The NTA had recorded 97.7 per cent attendance in the exam.

Triple Murder Shock in Madhya Pradesh: Shahnawaz Khan Allegedly Kills Sister-in-law and Nieces

Rewa: A shocking case of triple murder surfaced on May 4th (Saturday) in the Govindgarh police station area of Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh. Shahnawaz Khan is accused of killing his 25-year-old sister-in-law Hasina Khan and her two nieces, 2-year-old Alia and 3-year-old Anabiya. After committing the murders, Shahnawaz dumped the bodies of the children in a nearby pond. Upon receiving information about the crime, a police team led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) rushed to the spot and initiated a search for the bodies with the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local divers. The accused has been arrested and is currently under interrogation. The triple murder, which occurred in ward number three near Idgah, has sparked widespread concern. The deceased woman's husband resides and works in Visakhapatnam, while she stayed with her in-laws. The accused reportedly had a minor altercation with his sister-in-law, resulting in him striking her with a steel rod and then stabbing her with a knife. When her daughters witnessed the murder, he proceeded to attack them to cover up his crime. Shahnawaz left Hasinas body, covered in blood, in the house, while he stuffed the bodies of his nieces into a sack and disposed of them in the pond. The rest of the family members were not present at home during the murders, as they had gone to Jabalpur (Gurh as per some reports) to attend a wedding ceremony. Seizing the opportunity, Shahnawaz committed the heinous act. The police team, accompanied by Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Singh and Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anil Sonkar, recovered the bodies and initiated their investigation. The authorities continued to search the pond for the remains of the two girls. According to Anil Sonkar, Shahnawaz and his sister-in-law Hasina had a fight late on Saturday night. Enraged, he strangled her to death after hitting her head with a steel rod. Hasina Khan lived with her children, mother-in-law, and two brother-in-laws in ward number 3 of Govindgarh town, while her husband is employed outside. Hasinas elder brother-in-law had gone to Jabalpur for a wedding with her mother, and the younger brother-in-law Shahnawaz Khan was at home. There was a dispute between the brother-in-law and the sister-in-law on Saturday evening. The brother-in-law used a steel rod to hit Hasina in the head during this altercation. He then used a knife to cut her throat, said Sonkar. The police added, Hasinas two daughters, who were present, started crying when they saw what had happened. Subsequently, the perpetrator also murdered them and disposed of their corpses in the pond. He is being questioned by police after being brought into custody. Divers are assisting the police team in their hunt for the girls bodies. The conflict between the brother-in-law and the sister-in-law is being ascertained. Election Commission nod taken before lifting ban on onion exports: Govt sources

The government on Saturday lifted the ban on onion exports, a decision that can help boost income of a large section of farmers and comes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in key producing regions including Maharashtra. The government has imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne (around Rs 46 per kg) as well as 40 per cent export duty. Taking duty into account, the shipments will not be allowed below USD 770 per tonne (around Rs 64 per kg).

The Economic Times 5 May 2024 11:28 am

Government sources: Election Commission's approval secured before lifting onion export ban

Government sources: Election Commission's approval secured before lifting onion export ban The Centre has taken permission from the Election Commission to lift the ban on exports of onion in view of the ongoing implementation of the Model Code of Conduct due to the Lok Sabha elections, sources said. According to government sources, the Department of Revenue under the finance ministry took the permission from the Election Commission to lift the ban on onion exports, subject to conditions of 40 per cent export duty, and also a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne. The decision to lift the ban on exports of onion was on the recommendation of the Department of Consumer Affairs, which monitors the availability and price situation of onion in the country. On December 8 last year, the Centre had banned onion exports in early December to control retail prices amid concerns over likely fall in production. During the last 4-5 years, the country annually exported between 17 lakh and 25 lakh tonnes of onions. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare on Saturday said the lifting of the ban would not lead to any price rise in retail markets. ''Prices will remain stable. If at all there is any increase, it should be very marginal,'' she said on Saturday, while asserting that the government is committed to protect the interests of both consumers and farmers. The directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) in a notification on May 4, said that ''the export policy of onions is amended from prohibited to free subject to MEP of USD 550 per metric tonne with immediate effect and until further orders.'' On May 3, the finance ministry imposed a 40 per cent export duty. The decision assumes importance as it comes before the crucial Lok Sabha polls in key onion belts like Nashik, Ahmednagar and Solapur in Maharashtra. Farmers of this region have been demanding a lifting of the ban so that they can get a better price for their produce. Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Khare said the ''ban on onion exports has been removed from today (Saturday) because the supply situation is comfortable and prices are stable in both mandies as well as retail markets.'' The modal price at Lasalgaon mandi in Nashik was Rs 15 per kg in April. She said the decision has been taken after considering the latest estimates of onion production in rabi season at 191 lakh tonnes, which is comfortable. Availability and prices of onion in global markets were also factored in while taking this decision. The secretary said the monthly domestic demand of onion is around 17 lakh tonnes. ''Lifting of the ban would also encourage the farmers to put more area under onions. The monsoon forecast is above normal,'' Khare said. The secretary noted that the decision has been taken after wider discussions with stakeholders. A high-level team also visited key onion producing belts in Maharashtra to assess the ground situation. Khare also pointed out that the shelf life of onions is less and therefore a need was felt to export onions. The secretary said that the government is procuring 5 lakh tonnes of onions as buffer stock, so that it can intervene in the market in case of price rise. ''We are continuously monitoring the prices of all essential food items. We will continue to keep a watch on the availability and price situation,'' she said. A senior government official explained that there is an inter-ministerial committee (IMC) which reviews the prices, production, availability and exports of essential food items including onions. ''So do not think of this as an isolated instance of decision making by IMC,'' the official said, when asked whether the decision has been made in view of general elections. The official said the IMC has been taking a series of steps in various commodities including wheat and rice to boost domestic supply and keep prices under check. In March, the Union Agriculture Ministry released the data for onion production. As per the data, onion production in 2023-24 (First Advance Estimates) is expected to be around 254.73 lakh tonnes compared to around 302.08 lakh tonnes last year. This is due to a decrease of 34.31 lakh tonnes output in Maharashtra, 9.95 lakh tonnes in Karnataka, 3.54 lakh tonnes in Andhra Pradesh and 3.12 lakh tonnes in Rajasthan, the data showed. Last month, in an official statement, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said the government has allowed export of 99,150 tonnes of onion to six neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, UAE, Bhutan, Bahrain, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. The Congress last month accused the Narendra Modi government of ''callously neglecting'' Maharashtra's onion farmers affected due to the ban on onion exports and said that its manifesto promises a predictable import-export policy to prevent such catastrophic last-minute policies being imposed on farmers.

Rahul Gandhi has no fire but Cong playing with fire by attempting Hindu-Muslim divide:Rajnath

Rahul Gandhi has no fire but Cong playing with fire by attempting Hindu-Muslim divide:Rajnath Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has no fire while his party is playing with fire by attempting to create Hindu-Muslim divide for electoral dividends, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said. In an interview to PTI, Singh also indicated that the BJP will implement its big-ticket plans like rolling out of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and implementing the 'One Nation One Election' push if it retains power for the third consecutive term. The defence minister also said that he was confident that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will cross 400 seats and the BJP will get over 370 as these projections were made after detailed assessment of the ground situation and not made only for public consumption. On the overall political landscape, the defence minister accused the Congress of attempting to disturb social harmony and trying to create tensions on religious lines. ''They are attempting to create Hindu-Muslim divide for electoral gains. The Congress is trying to create tensions on religious lines,'' he alleged. ''The Congress wants to disturb social harmony. They look at the Muslim community only as a vote bank. I have a suggestion for them -- politics should not be done only for forming governments. The aim of politics should be for nation building,'' he said. ''Rahul Gandhi has no fire but Congress is playing with fire,'' he said. Singh said people of the country will repose their faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP's tally will improve significantly based on the performance of the government in the last five years. ''Our seats will increase in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and we will get some seats in Tamil Nadu. Our account will open in Kerala as well. We are winning a good number of seats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,'' the senior BJP leader said. ''We will increase our tally in Odisha, Jharkhand and Assam. We are sweeping Chhattisgarh,'' he said, asserting that the BJP will cross the 370-mark. Asked whether the BJP's seats in Maharashtra will come down, he did not give a direct reply but said there may be some adjustments here and there. The BJP leader also came down hard on the Congress for its plan to ''redistribute'' wealth, saying it will have disastrous consequences for the country's economy. ''The concept of redistribution of wealth will trigger recession. Argentina and Venezuela implemented it and faced disastrous consequences. The investors will lose confidence in India,'' Singh said. On the BJP's big-ticket plans like implementation of the UCC and 'One Nation One Poll' push in if it retains power, Singh said it fulfils promises that it makes to the people of India. In its manifesto, the BJP pledged to implement the UCC if it returns to power after the general elections. It also mentioned that the party will move forward with a resolve to realise the idea of 'One Nation, One Election'. ''We always fulfil our commitments. We will never allow any question mark on our credibility and will not compromise on the country's unity and integrity. We implement whatever we say in our manifesto. We have to do whatever we say,'' Singh said. ''We will go for 'One Nation One Election. We will take views of every quarter, including all political parties on it,'' he said. On the UCC, the defence minister said even the Constitution-makers felt a need for it, as it is mentioned in the directive principles. ''The Congress wants to create fear psychosis; they want to use the Hindu-Muslim card,'' he said. ''They do not have any issue. They want to form a government by dividing the society in the name of caste, creed and religion and they have always done it,'' he alleged.
