Narine, the opener, lights up show yet again

CHENNAI: Sunil Narine has been a revelation with the blade this IPL season. After being re-installed as opener, he has taken apart bowlers at will to be among the top scorers. That was evident in Lucknow on Sunday as the Kolkata Knight Riders opener dismantled the Lucknow Super Giants attack to post his third half-century of the season. With his propensity to dominate the short delivery, clearing the ropes at will in the process, he has left the bowlers' head scratching. LSG's Marcus Stoinis experienced that first-hand. Narine had warmed up to the occasion and had reached his half-century, his third of the season, before Stoinis' over (11th of the innings). Narine cleared the ropes three times, leaving the helpless Stoinis in dismay. The first one was a ball which was pitched full around leg. Narine cleared his front leg before hitting it over long on. Following a dot ball, Stoinis went for slower delivery but Narine was in no mood to slow down, and connected again to find the maximum. Narine made good use of the crease to make it worse for Stoinis in the final delivery. Earlier, Narine had handed the same treatment to the likes of Shardul Thakur. Narine's innings was finally undone by spinner Ravi Bishnoi, but not before scoring 81 off 39 deliveries. The West Indian, who is currently the third-highest run-scorer with a tally of 461 (in 11 matches) this season, sliced a full delivery outside off to be caught by substitute, Devdutt Padikkal, near long off. Narine's innings comprised six fours and seven sixes. However, KKR lost their way for a brief period as Andre Russell (12 off 8 balls) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (32 off 26) were sent back in a span of seven deliveries. Rinku Singh and KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer (23 off 15) were also finding it hard to get the boundaries before the former was sent back by Naveen-ul-Haq, who ended with figures of 3/49. In the end, Ramandeep Singh (25 off 6) did exceptionally well to take the visiting side to 235/6 in 20 overs. Before Narine's display, it was his fellow opener Phil Salt who had sparked the innings with 14-ball 32. Narine had in fact made a watchful start before taking centrestage. Brief scores: Kolkata 235/6 in 20 ovs (Narine 81, Raghuvanshi 32, Salt 32, Ramandeep 25 n.o; Naveen-ul-Haq 3/49) vs Lucknow.

IPL 2024: Sunil Narines 81 Propels Kolkata To 235/6 Against Lucknow

Kolkata Knight Riders: Seasoned West Indies opener Sunil Narine hammered a 39-ball 81 as Kolkata Knight Riders went on to put up the highest total at the Ekana Cricket stadium, reaching 235/6 in 20 overs while batting first against Lucknow Super Giants here on Sunday. Asked to bat first on a wicket expected to help pacers, Kolkata openers, Phil Salt and Sunil Narine, gave them a solid start as both the batters added their sixth fifty runs partnership (most in IPL 2024) in just 3.4 overs. The duo added 61 runs in just 26 balls as Salt raced to 27 off his first 11 deliveries before falling prey to Naveen-ul-Haq. Salt chased a wide one, and only got a light top edge to it to be dismissed for 32 off 14 deliveries. Narine's carnage continued on the other end as he reached his third half-century of the season and seventh of his IPL career, off 27 balls. Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi then put on a fifty-run partnership for the second wicket, to follow the half-century opening stand as KKR reached triple figures in the ninth over. Narine batted dangerously in the last couple of overs -- he could have been caught at long-on, but the fielder there was over-balanced and stumbled over the rope for a six. He could have been caught at short third, but the fielder couldn't quite hold on as he dived and stretched above his head and to the left for a boundary. Eventually, he was caught on the point boundary, but through the course of a hugely destructive innings of 81 runs (4x6, 7x6) in 39 deliveries. But he already put KKR on course for something epic as Andre Russell hammered a six in his first four balls to suggest he was going to pick up exactly where Narine left off. KKR reached 155/3 in 13 overs. The dangerous Russel got out for 12 in the nine-run 15th over of Naveen-ul-Haq, courtesy of a brilliant backward-diving catch by Krishnappa Gowtham. Yudhvir Singh Charak, who came in as a concussion substitute after Mohsin Khan struck on his very first delivery to get rid of Raghuvanshi. Naveen-ul-Haq got his third wicket of the night when he dismissed Rinku Singh for 16 off a short-pitched delivery angling into the body. Ramandeep Singh came at number seven and belted in the death overs and propelled KKR to the highest batting first total at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. After an underwhelming start to the death overs, Ramandeep Singh found his range in the 19th and 20th overs, pummeling 25 off 6 balls. Three of the balls he faced were hit for sixes while one was hit for four. He scored a double and a single of the other two deliveries. Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 235/6 in 20 overs (Sunil Narine 81, Phil Salt 32; Naveen-ul-Haq 3-49, Yudhvir Singh 1-24) against Lucknow Super Giants.

IPL 2024: Bottom-dweller Mumbai Indians Play To Revive Campaign, Restore Pride Against SRH

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium: Plumbing the depths of the points table in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the only direction Mumbai Indians can now go is climb up the standings when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 55 at the Wankhede Stadium here on Monday. Considering the way their campaign has unfolded so far, getting things their way seems as good as impossible for Hardik Pandya's side as they have suffered defeats in eight of the 11 matches they have played so far this season. They have failed to stitch together a complete performance in most of their matches, losing games after excelling in one department of the match. Like in their clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday (May 3) when they bundled out the visitors for 169 as their bowlers used the double-paced wicket to their advantage to restrict them. Jasprit Bumrah and Nuwan Thushara claimed three wickets apiece while Hardik Pandya bagged 2-44. With Thushara striking three early blows, KKR were reduced to 57/5 but Mumbai Indians allowed them to recover from there, bringing in spinners Naman Dhir and Piyush Chawla instead of pressing on with the pacers. Venkatesh Iyer scored a valiant 52-ball 70 and shared an 83-run partnership with Manish Pandey (42) as they rescued Kolkata Knight Riders. Chasing 170, Mumbai Indians lost the plot as batters like Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, and Nehal Wadhera got out cheaply. Suryakumar Yadav waged a lone battle, scoring 56 off 35 balls, and hitting a flurry of shots as he tried to lift them from a precarious 71/6. His wicket and the one of Tim David triggered another collapse as Andre Russell and Mitchell Starc shared five wickets between them to hasten the demise of their hopes. Starc claimed three wickets in the 19th over for a final haul of 4-33 as KKR won by 24 runs for their first victory at the Wankhede Stadium in 12 years. Agreed that the wicket was two-paced but it was also true that some of the MI batters were out to full tosses. With six points from 11 matches, Mumbai Indians will hope to win their remaining three matches and salvage their pride even if other results do not go in their favour and help them make it to the Playoffs. Mumbai Indians are going into the match with four successive defeats and considering their up-and-down form, Hardik Pandya's team will have to pull up their socks to restore some pride. Meanwhile, their opponents for Monday's clash, Sunrisers Hyderabad have everything to play for as they are placed fourth in the standings and still in the running for the playoffs spots. SRH have 12 points from six wins in 10 matches and are placed fourth in the points table, clubbed together with Lucknow Super Giants behind Rajasthan Royals (16) and Kolkata Knight Riders (14). SRH need to win their remaining four matches as the race for the playoffs spots is going to be neck-and-neck. The good thing for them is that they have recovered after two successive defeats against Southern rivals Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. They travel to Mumbai after a victory over table-toppers Rajasthan Royals. After four successive wins starting with a six-wicket win over defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Under the leadership of Pat Cummins, SRH have done well so far in the league with openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in great form and the likes of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram complimenting their efforts with superb batting when needed. Reddy has been their find of the season and had struck a 42-ball unbeaten 76 in their last match while Travis Head blasted 58 off 44 balls while Klaasen smashed a 19-ball 42. For them, Travis Head (396), Klaasen (337) and Abhishek Sharma (315) were their top scorers. T. Natarajan and Pat Cummins are their most successful bowlers so far with 15 and 12 respectively. Bhuvneshwar and Jaydev Undakat have claimed eight wickets apiece. Going by the last match played there, the pitch is likely to offer some assistance to the bowlers and considering their strength in this department, the force would be with SRH in Monday's clash. Overall, Mumbai Indians have dominated the head-to-head series, winning 12 out of the 21 matches played between them while SRH have won nine. SRH had defeated Mumbai Indians by 31 runs in a high-scoring clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on March 27, scoring 277/3 batting first with Klaasen hammering an unbeaten 80 while Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma scoring 62 and 63 respectively. They then restricted MI to 246/5 with Tilak Varma anchoring the innings with 64. Squads: Mumbai Indians: Ishan Kishan(w), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Nehal Wadhera, Tim David, Mohammad Nabi, Piyush Chawla, Luke Wood, Jasprit Bumrah, Nuwan Thushara, Naman Dhir, Shams Mulani, Dewald Brevis, Kumar Kartikeya, Shreyas Gopal, Harvik Desai, Gerald Coetzee, Romario Shepherd, Arjun Tendulkar, Shivalik Sharma, Anshul Kamboj, Akash Madhwal, Kwena Maphaka Sunrisers Hyderabad: Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen(w), Nitish Reddy, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins(c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, T Natarajan, Anmolpreet Singh, Washington Sundar, Glenn Phillips, Umran Malik, Mayank Markande, Rahul Tripathi, Mayank Agarwal, Upendra Yadav, Jhatavedh Subramanyan, Sanvir Singh, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, Akash Maharaj Singh. Here's How RCB Can Qualify for IPL Playoffs

Hyderabad: After a bad start in this IPL season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) makes a comeback in this tournament with a win against Gujarat Titans (GT). They defeated GT by 4 wickets. RCB is placed in the 7th position in the points table after their win with 4 wins in 11 matches and run rate of -0.049. Royal Challengers have 3 more games to play and they have a chance to qualify for the playoffs if they win their remaining three matches which will take them to 14 points and they also need the help of other teams. For RCB to qualify, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) with 12 points each should not win more than 1 match of their remaining 4 matches. Punjab Kings with 8 points should not win more than 2 matches in their remaining 4 matches. CSK and DC with 10 points each should not win more than 2 matches. KKR and RR should win all their remaining matches. If this plays out well, 6 teams will have 14 points where Net run rate will play a crucial role and for this RCB should win all their matches by a huge margin. RCB will play Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings in their remaining three matches.

IPL: SRH eye consistency in must-win clash against frail MI

Mumbai: A confident Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to produce a dominant show against a frail Mumbai Indians outfit and move up in the Indian Premier League points table when the two teams clash here on Monday. Placed fourth in the IPL points table with 12 points in 10 matches with six wins and four losses, SRH will be desperate to produce an all-round show and make improvements especially in their bowling department. The Pat Cummins-led side is in the midst of an intense battle between multiple teams who are bidding for spots in the final four, with Rajasthan Royals (16 points), Kolkata Knight Riders (14 points) and Lucknow Super Giants (12 points) placed above SRH. Chennai Super Kings (5th with 10 points) and a resurgent Delhi Capitals (6th with 10 points) are breathing down SRH's neck, a scenario that would force the 2016 winners to shrug off any rust and get ready for an intense mid-table battle. If a two-paced pitch at the Wankhede Stadium for the previous clash against KKR was an aberration, the free-flowing SRH batters would look to make merry and pile up a huge score as they have done several times this year. The pitches here generally are batting-friendly and short boundary lengths at this venue make scores in excess of 200 a norm, but the MI-KKR contest played out on a sluggish surface last Friday challenged the batters to dig deep. SRH would be high on confidence having pipped the table-toppers RR by just one run in their previous outing, a game in which their bowlers pulled off a thrilling win. Travis Head (396 runs), Abhishek Sharma (315) and Heinrich Klaasen (337) remain the enforcers in SRH's batting but South African Aiden Markram would be keen to make a big score of his own, having had a mixed run so far. Nitish Kumar Reddy (219 runs) has emerged as one of the most promising players for SRH in last few games which takes a significant amount of pressure off the key batters. T Natarajan's (15 wickets) accuracy would be handy for SRH as the left-arm pacer is chasing Mumbai Indians' Jasprit Bumrah (17) for the purple cap. Five-time winners Mumbai slipped to the bottom of the pool again when Royal Challengers Bengaluru trumped Gujarat Titans on Saturday night. With only three wins in 11 matches, MI's challenge is all but over and there is only pride and name left to play for by their own admission. However, all is not lost as MI's key India players for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya would remain in focus for their individual form. Rohit's all-out aggressive approach has not yielded many big scores whereas the world number 1 T20 batter Suryakumar would be eyeing consistency after a fine half-century against KKR a few nights ago. India vice-captain Pandya has being consistently on the receiving end due to his ordinary form with both bat and ball and also his on-field decisions as MI skipper. The all-rounder, however, would be keen to make amends and put an end to the criticism that he has been facing ever since this IPL edition got underway. Teams: Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya (c), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Dewald Brevis, Jasprit Bumrah, Piyush Chawla, Gerald Coetzee, Tim David, Shreyas Gopal, Ishan Kishan (wk), Anshul Kamboj, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal, Kwena Maphaka, Mohammad Nabi, Shams Mulani, Naman Dhir, Shivalik Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Arjun Tendulkar, Nuwan Thushara, Tilak Varma, Harvik Desai (wk), Nehal Wadhera, Luke Wood. Sugar Industry Woes: Congress accuses BJP of Neglect in Uttar Pradesh

Sugar Industry Woes: Congress accuses BJP of Neglect in Uttar Pradesh The Congress on Sunday alleged that the BJP government has neglected Uttar Pradesh farmers' frequent calls to increase the price of sugarcane and 'ignored' the plight of once-thriving sugar industry in the state. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posed questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his rallies in Etawah and Dhaurahra. ''Why has the trauma centre in Sitapur Hospital been defunct for 7 years? Was the promise to prioritise Tomato-Onion-Potato (TOP) yet another jumla? Why have sugarcane prices remained abysmally low in UP?'' Ramesh said in a post on X. Ramesh said the trauma centre at the Sitapur District Hospital has been lying unused for seven years. It was built during the tenure of the previous state government but the BJP has neglected it since coming to power, he alleged. ''As a result, patients often have to go all the way to Lucknow to avail of treatment. Why has the BJP government so callously endangered the lives of the people? Why has the trauma centre been gathering dust for the last 7 years?'' he asked. Ramesh further said the potato farmers in the state have struggled because of massive price fluctuations in the last few years. Asserting that Uttar Pradesh is India's largest potato producer, Ramesh said last year, potato growers in areas like Etawah, Farrukhabad, Kannauj and Auraiya reported selling their produce at rates below the state government's minimum price because of high produce. ''Farmers were only able to fetch Rs 500 per quintal, less than half their production cost of Rs 1200-1400 per quintal. In 2018, the PM had made the grand promise that Tomato, Onion, and Potato (TOP) were the TOP priority of his government. What happened to this TOP promise? Was it yet another jumla?'' he said. ''According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Uttar Pradesh is India's largest sugarcane producer. Yet, the BJP government has neglected farmers' frequent calls to increase the price of sugarcane,'' he alleged. He said the sugarcane prices stood at Rs 360 per quintal in UP, which is lower than Rs 386 per quintal in Punjab and Rs 391 per quintal in Haryana. ''Price hikes have also failed to keep pace with inflation and farmers are now struggling due to the rising cost of fertilisers and pesticides. The area under cultivation has also come down by almost 4,000 hectares in the last three years, which is now causing problems for UP's sugar mills,'' the Congress leader said. Amidst sugarcane shortages, mills are struggling to pay farmers on time, and many fear that the mills will shut down permanently, he alleged. ''This vicious cycle is threatening the livelihoods of sugarcane farmers and mill workers but the BJP government is nowhere to be seen. Can the PM tell us why the BJP has ignored the plight of UP's once thriving sugar industry?'' Ramesh said asking the prime minister to break his ''silence'' on these issues.

Maulvi Sohel Abubakr Timol Arrested: Alleged Plot to Assassinate BJP Leaders in Surat Uncovered

Surat: A 27-year-old man was arrested in Gujarat's Surat on Friday over an alleged plot to kill BJP leaders and a leader of a right-wing organisation. The accused, Maulvi Sohel Abubakr Timol, threatened the chief editor of Sudarshan TV channel, BJP's Telangana MLA Raja Singh, and the party's former spokesperson Nupur Sharma in connivance with his handlers from Pakistan and Nepal, Surat senior police official Anupam Singh Gehlot said. Abubakr Timol worked at a thread factory as a manager and also offered private tuition on Islam to Muslim children, he added. Police had received information that a man was connecting people on a WhatsApp group, and posting content to hurt religious sentiment, and instigate communal violence during election. Based on the tip-off, police launched an investigation. Timol's mobile chats revealed he was conspiring with people from Pakistan and Nepal to offer Rs 1 crore 'supari' (contract for killing) and procure weapons from Pakistan to kill his first target, national president of Hindu Sanatan Sangh Upadesh Rana, said Gehlot. After his detention, we found several objectionable contents in his mobile phones, including the one regarding offering Rs 1 crore for the murder of Updesh Rana. For this purpose, they were planning to collect funds and procure weapons, Gehlot said. Chat records showed Timol wanted to disturb communal harmony during the ongoing general elections, a senior police official said, adding that Surat police was taking the help of other agencies to find out if they had more targets in mind.Preliminary investigation revealed that Timol was in contact with two people identified as Dogar and Shehnaz having phone numbers belonging to Pakistan and Nepal, respectively.Around a year and half ago, the two people contacted the accused through social media on phone numbers belonging to Pakistan and Nepal. They instigated the accused by claiming the Nabi had been mocked by Hindu organisations in India and these need to be straightened out. On the chat app, Timol wrote speeches against Hinduism and threatened Rana that he would be murdered like Kamlesh Tiwari, police said, adding that a member of his chat group had sent Rana's photo with a Rs 1 crore offer to murder him. Kamlesh Tiwari (Uttar Pradesh-based president of the Hindu Samaj Party was killed on October 18, 2019 in Lucknow). The arrested accused was in contact with holders of Whatsapp numbers with codes of different countries like Pakistan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Laos, police official said. SP, BJP locked in intense fight in six Yadav strongholds

LUCKNOW : With Yadav land being the main battleground in Uttar Pradesh in phase-III, the Samajwadi Party is leaving no stone unturned to save its citadel from saffron onslaught, while the BJP is also creating a furore through its big fighters. Mainpuri, Firozabad, Etah, Baduan, of Phase -III and Kannauj and Etawah, of next phase on May 13, are set for a fierce fight between the ruling party and the main opposition. Meanwhile, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav himself is commanding the fort in Kannauj against sitting BJP MP Subrat Pathak. While in Mainpuri, the SP chiefs wife Dimple Yadav is ready to carry Mulayam Singh Yadavs legacy forward by challenging state tourism minister and BJP candidate Jaiveer Singh who is a sitting MLA from Mainpuri assembly segment. Akshay Yadav, Akhileshs cousin and SP national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadavs son, is again trying his fate from Firozabad seat, another bastion of SP against Vishwadeep Singh. Akshay had lost the seat to BJPs Chandrasen Jadon in 2019. In Badaun, the SP has put its stake in Aditya Yadav, another cousin of Akhilesh and son of Shivpal Yadav. However, the BJP has reposed faith in a local RSS pracharak firebrand leader Durvijay Singh Shakya. On the remaining two seats of the Yadav land, SPs Devesh Shakya is challenging late Kaylan Singhs son and sitting BJP MP Rajveer Singh in Etah and Jitendra Dohre is challenging BJP MP Ram Shankar Katheria in Etawah reserved seat. In the 2019 elections, of the six seats in the region, the BJP had bagged five Etah, Firozabad, Etawah, Badaun and Kannauj while the SP could win only Mainpuri. To repeat its 2019 performance, the BJP has launched an extensive campaign led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and CM Yogi Adityanath. The BJP plans to pin down the SP in its stronghold by launching a hectic campaigns. The Yadav familys defeat will pave the way for consolidation of the BJP support base in the Yadav land, said a BJP leader. All the Yadav family members Akhilesh Yadav, Ram Gopal Yadav, Shivpal Yadav, Dharmendra Yadav, Dimple Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav are canvassing. While Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath have been targeting SP over dynastic politics and appeasement politics, Akhilesh Yadav is urging voters to exercise their franchise to dethrone the BJP and protect the Constitution. Shivpal Yadavs rebellion in 2019 weakened the SP in its stronghold. It could win just one seat in the elections. With Shivpal back in the family fold, the SP hopes to regain the lost ground. The OBCs, Dalits, Muslims and upper castes play a decisive role in deciding the fate of the candidates on the five seats. On the other, the BSP has made the contest triangular on the five seats by fielding Shiv Prasad Yadav from Mainpuri, Mohammad Irfan from Etah, Chaudhary Bashir from Firozabad, Sarika Singh Baghel from Etawah and Imran Bin Zafar from Kannauj.

IPL 2024: LSG Might Have To Play The Rest Of The Event Without Mayank Yadav, Says Coach Justin Langer

Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari: Lucknow Super Giants are reconciled to probably playing the rest of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 without young tearaway pacer Mayank Yadav. Even if there is a possibility of getting him back, it would be a huge test for the pacer, said LSG head coach Justin Langer ahead of their upcoming clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. Yadav had returned for the match against Mumbai Indians at the same venue on April 30 but pulled after bowling 3.1 overs, returning to the dugout as his injury flared up again. Langer said there were no updates on Mayank Yadav on Saturday but felt his injury was the usual one that young fast bowlers have to suffer early in their careers. No updates. He had a scan. He has got a small tear in a similar area where the last one was. So, it is very unfortunate. We saw the impact he had made, said Langer in the pre-match press conference on Saturday. He came back into the game, but we can also see there's been a lot of discussion about fast bowlers, and he spoke to (Jasprit) Bumrah after the game and he reassured him that he's going to be a fast bowler, said the former Australia coach. Part of his journey as a young fast bowler, he's going to get injuries, and in my experience every young fast bowler, probably until they get to 24-26, are going to experience different injuries and also most unfortunate is he's got huge potential, he added. Langer dispelled the notion that Yadav had made a pre-mature return against Mumbai Indians, which led to his injury aggravating. He did his rehabilitation, (it) was excellent. He went into the game, had a couple of balls before the game, he was completely pain-free, so I was very sad for him and it's disappointing for LSG as well, said the LSG coach. He said even if there are chances of Mayank Yadav returning to the squad, it would be a big test for him. Already might have to play the rest of the tournament without him. You can fly him, hopefully for the playoffs but it will be a real test as well. It would probably be difficult for him to get up for the backend of the tournament, said Langer. LSG are currently placed third in the third position with 12 points from 10 matches and is in a tight contest with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals in the race for the playoff spots behind the top two -- Rajasthan Royals (16) and Kolkata Knight Riders (14).

Mayank Yadav Ruled Out of IPL 2023: Coach Justin Langer

Mayank Yadav Ruled Out of IPL 2023: Coach Justin Langer Pace sensation Mayank Yadav has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League after sustaining a lower abdominal tear, Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer confirmed on Saturday. That the 21-year-old Delhi man would be out of this IPL with a grade 1 tear (side strain) was first reported by PTI on May 1 along with the news of his induction into BCCI's pace bowling contract list. Asked about Mayank's fitness status, Langer said, No, we'll be praying that he can play, hopefully, in the play-offs, but I am a realist as well. It'll probably be difficult for him to get up for the back-end of the tournament.'' Mayank, who took everyone by surprise with his 155 click thunderbolts played four IPL matches, took seven wickets. But more importantly, in two of those games he broke down without completing his quota of overs. The pacer got injured for the first time against Gujarat Titans and he left the field with a side strain after bowling one over. He underwent a four-week rehabilitation and came back against Mumbai Indians but broke down again after sending down 3.1 overs leading to scathing criticism from Langer's one-time teammate Brett Lee. Langer informed the media that Mayank sustained a tear at the same area where he was injured earlier. ''He's (Mayank) had a scan. He's got a small tear in a similar area to where his last one (injury) was. So, it's very unfortunate. We saw the impact he had when he came back into the game, the former Australia opener and head coach said. Langer said even the great Jasprit Bumrah has spoken about how fast bowlers will have to cope with injuries. There will always be a lot of discussion about fast bowlers, and I know he spoke to [Jasprit] Bumrah after the game and he reassured him that if he's going to be a fast bowler, a part of his journey as a young fast bowler, he's going to get injuries. So, in my experience, every young fast bowler, probably until they get to 25 or 26, is going to experience different injuries. It's the most unfortunate. He's got huge potential, he said. While Lee had questioned LSGs handling of Mayank's injury, the head coach sounded different. His rehabilitation was excellent. He went into the game [against MI], had a couple of bowls before the game. He was completely pain free. So, it's very sad for him and it's disappointing for LSG as well that he might not play (the rest of the tournament).

LSG Cautions Against KKR's All-Round Might in IPL Playoff Pursuit

LSG Cautions Against KKR's All-Round Might in IPL Playoff Pursuit Lucknow Super Giants will have to bring their A game forward to prevail against a dominant Kolkata Knight Riders when the two teams, marching towards IPL playoffs, clash here on Sunday. With an all-round win by 24 runs over Mumbai Indians propelling the second-placed KKR to 14 points one more step closer to qualification the pressure will be on KL Rahul's LSG to find a way past the threat that Shreyas Iyer's side poses. Lucknow Super Giants are placed just one rung below KKR at number three with 12 points from 10 matches with six wins and four defeats. With a rampant Sunrisers Hyderabad (12 points) hot on heir heels at fourth, followed by the dangerous Chennai Super Kings (10 points) and Delhi Capitals (10 points) on the points table, LSG will be under pressure to avoid getting into a mid-table battle as the race for the final-four has intensified. LSG were far from convincing in their previous assignment at Ekana Stadium here as they were made to work hard in a modest 145-run chase by Mumbai Indians, winning by just four wickets in the last over. Skipper Rahul and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis have been the key players for LSG and it remains to be seen if South Africa veteran Quinton de Kock is brought back in place of young Arshin Kulkarni, who opened the innings in the last game. Even though he has gone without a fifty since the first game, Nicholas Pooran has consistently notched up crucial scores but LSGs overall finishing skills is under question following their struggles against Mumbai Indians. LSG seemed to have made heavy weather towards the end giving MI a real sniff by losing wickets in a flurry and completing their modest chase with some stutter. Ayush Badoni has had a subdued run in this IPL and the uncapped Indian player would be keen to shrug off the rustiness. LSG's bowlers will also face a stern test with none of them making a real dent with individual brilliance in this IPL. LSG are also likely to be without express pacer Mayank Yadav. Having lost only three of their 11 matches so far, it has taken something out of the ordinary to stop KKR in their tracks. CSK used a spin-friendly surface to eke out a win in Chepauk, while RRs all-round class helped them pip KKR in a high-scoring thriller. If anything, KKRs bowling woes were exposed when Punjab Kings recorded IPL's highest chase ever against them, but Iyer's side has emerged strongly from that setback with two impressive wins. However, having trumped MI on a sluggish wicket which exposed their batting frailties, KKR will aim for a much improved performance with the bat. For the second time in this IPL, KKR batters struggled when the ball did not come on to the bat and they were forced to change gears in order to build a strong target. KKR slipped to 57 for five at one stage and ran the risk of being shot out for a paltry total, but Venkatesh Iyer (70) and Manish Pandey (42) came to the rescue with a fine 83-run stand. Australia pacer Starc says no impact player rule in T20 WC will force captains to think tactically

MUMBAI: Kolkata Knight Riders and Australia pacer Mitchell Starc believes not having Indian Premier League's Impact player rule will force the captains to think more tactically when the T20 World Cup begins in the Americas next month. The impact player rule, which was implemented last year, has witnessed teams batting with more aggression and fearlessness, leading to totals in excess of 200 being scored consistently. The IPL this year has been particularly high-scoring with totals in excess of 250 being notched up at least on three instances. The impact player rule changes things a fair bit. Everyone gets to bat a lot deeper having a batting and a bowling XI, Starc told the media after KKR defeated Mumbai Indians by 24 runs here on Friday. I guess there's a lot made of that rule and there's been a lot of high scores, which is the nature of the wickets and the grounds we play on here. Impact player rule has had a fair part to play in that, when you are going to have batters and batting all-rounders come in at Nos 8 or 9, it's a long batting lineup. There's no fear in the powerplay when all you have to do is clear the infield and score runs. Certainly, there has been some really good batting, don't get me wrong, it's not just the rules that play a part there. Starc, who took 4/33 in KKR's win, said having no such rule in T20 World Cup could witness the impact on the scores. There's been some fantastic scoring, some fantastic partnerships and some individual brilliance with the bat. On the flip side, time (will) tell, we got the World Cup coming next month, there's no impact player rule. Whether that affects the scores, is yet to be seen, he said. It probably will. There's been talk about balance of team and when you can't just bring someone in, your all-rounders come back into play, certainly world-class all-rounders that balance the team now. Captains (will) have to think a bit tactically too when you have just 11 players. It's been interesting to experience it first hand in the IPL, he added. Starc, who was bought for a record price tag of Rs 24.75 crores, found himself on the receiving end of the batters' aggression this season but the Aussie bowler said there was no price-tag pressure on him. I didn't set my price tag, so it is what it is, he said. The 34-year-old said IPL is serving as a perfect opportunity to prepare for the T20 World Cup but at the same time he is not thinking too far ahead and is focussed on helping KKR get close to their target of winning the tournament. I haven't really thought too much about it. It's T20 cricket, it's not as demanding as Test match cricket. Physically (it is) not a problem and (it is a) fantastic lead-in to play here in the best T20 league in the world, he said. You're playing some high quality cricket leading into the World Cup, a lot of players at this tournament are going to be at the World Cup. In that regard, it's a great thing to see and test your skills. In terms of length of time, that's part and parcel of international cricket. My main focus is in two days' time play in Lucknow, the World Cup is next month. At this moment, it's (about) trying to help KKR win the tournament.

IPL 2024: He Just Looks Really Flattered At The Moment, Says Finch On Hardik Pandya

Star Sports Cricket Live: Former Australia cricketer Aaron Finch dwelled on Mumbai Indians performance after 24-runs defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday night. Finch also said that Hardik Pandya is feeling the pressure of a tournament such as an IPL. Jasprit Bumrah (3-18) and Nuwan Thushara (3-42) claimed three wickets apiece at each end of the KKR innings as Mumbai Indians restricted them to a paltry 169 despite brilliant fighting 70 off 52 balls by Venkatesh Iyer, who raised 83 runs for the sixth wicket in the company of Manish Pandey. You would expect them to chase 170 with the dew falling at the Wankhede stadium. It's a beautiful place to bat generally. Yes it was a bit uncharacteristic in the way it turned a bit more and a bit more two paced than what we have seen in the past, said Finch to Star Sports Cricket Live. Mitchell Starc claimed 4-33, bagging three wickets in four balls in the 19th over to end Mumbai's innings for 145 after spin twins Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy had reduced them to 61/4 with identical 2-22 hauls. He just looks really flattered at the moment, he looks really drained and someone who is feeling the pressure. And I feel for him, I have been in that situation myself where everything that you're trying personally doesn't seem to be working. And when the team isn't performing as well, that's a very difficult place to be. And that's one thing where you're not performing and the teams winning, that's something you'd take as a captain but you bare all responsibility as captain for the teams performance and that is an incredibly hard place to be, particularly in this competition where it's so brutal. KKR will next face Lucknow Super Giants at Lucknow on Sunday while Mumbai Indians will lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday.

IPL 2024: The Impact Player Rule Changes Things A Fair Bit For Bowlers Feels Mitchell Starc

The Impact Player: Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Mitchell Starc feels Impact Player rule changes things a fair bit for the bowler in the IPL 2024 after the star pacer claimed a four-fer to guide Kolkata Knight Riders to 24-runs victory over Mumbai at Wankhede Stadium after 12 years. The Australian pacer entered the tournament with a weight of expectations on his shoulders, having been the most expensive pick ever at an IPL auction. However, his performance on the field didn't quite match the anticipation initially. Starc had just seven wickets and an economy of 11.78 in his first eight outings, and had conceded more than 50 three times. On Friday, he bounced back with 4 for 33 in Kolkata Knight Riders' 24-run win over Mumbai Indians, and said the Impact Player rule has made things easy a bit for the bowlers. The Impact Player rule changes things a fair bit, Starc said at the press conference. Everyone gets to bat a lot deeper having a batting and a bowling XI. There's a lot made of that rule throughout the tournament and there's been a lot of high scores, which is the nature of the wickets and the grounds we play on here. When you have batters and batting allrounders come in at Nos. 8 or 9, it's a long batting line-up. There's no fear in the powerplay when all you have to do is to clear the infield and score runs. Certainly, there has been some really good batting, don't get me wrong, it's not just the rules that play a part there. There's been some fantastic scoring, some fantastic partnerships and some individual brilliance with the bat, he added. With a stellar performance against MI on Friday night, Starc not only silenced his critics but also showcased his resilience and determination. His four-wicket haul played a pivotal role in Kolkata Knight Riders' victory, proving his worth in the team. Reflecting on his turnaround, Starc emphasized the importance of adapting to the conditions and strategizing accordingly. I haven't changed too much, he said. It's about assessing conditions after the first innings. We certainly spoke about it and the batters that came off throughout that first innings mentioned the wicket and the lengths that were the hardest to face. That created the bowling plans for us. As T20 cricket doesn't always go the way you want it to go, and of course I wanted to go a bit better at the start. But I am not the only bowler going for runs. It is what it is. The fact that we sit second [on the points table] and are building towards the more important games at the back end and are playing some good cricket, hopefully I can be a part of it too. Looking ahead, Starc remained unfazed by the impending T20 World Cup, expressing confidence in his ability to manage his workload effectively. With his focus firmly set on contributing to KKR's success in the IPL, he viewed the tournament as valuable preparation for the international stage. It's T20 cricket, it's not as demanding as Test match cricket, he said. Physically it is not a problem and it's fantastic lead-in to play here in the best T20 league in the world. You're playing some high-quality cricket leading into the World Cup, a lot of players at this tournament are going to be at the World Cup. In that regard, it's a great thing to see and test your skills. In terms of length of time, that's part and parcel of international cricket. My main focus is to play in Lucknow in two days' time. The World Cup is next month - at this moment, it's [about] trying to help KKR win the tournament. Starc expects the T20 World Cup to provide a more even contest between bat and ball, unlike the IPL where totals of over 200 have been commonplace. There's no Impact Player rule [in international cricket], so whether that affects the scores is yet to be seen. I think it probably will. People talk about the balance of the team when you can't just bring someone in. Your allrounders come back into play. Captains have to think a bit tactically, too, when you have just 11 players. It's been interesting to experience it first-hand in the IPL. Amidst his individual achievements, Starc commended the camaraderie within the KKR camp, particularly highlighting the young fast bowlers in the squad. Harshit Rana played all games before his one-match suspension and has taken 11 wickets at an economy of 9.78. Vaibhav Arora has picked up nine wickets in six outings at 9.42. Despite his experience, he approached his interactions with humility, aiming to lead by example and foster a supportive environment within the team. I am a bit more experienced and a bit older, at the same time I haven't played a lot of T20 cricket, Starc said of his interactions with them. [So it is about] working off each other in a way. I am certainly not there to tell people what to do, I am happy to answer questions if they have [any] or look to lead more by example at training and get my work in. We are a pretty good group, the whole group of players and staff is awesome to be around. I would like to think I am approachable, so happy to train with the boys. I was training with Harshit Rana the other night, made him run extra which he wasn't happy about (laughs). But no, it's a great group and a lot of time we have a lot of fun.

Amethi ticket to little-known Congman

LUCKNOW: Ending weeks of speculation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers for the general elections from his familys bastion Rae Bareli in the presence of his mother and former Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi, sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday. This newspaper was the first to report on the buzz about Rahul entering the fray from Rae Bareli (April 30 edition). With Rahul opting for Rae Bareli, the party gave the Amethi ticket to family faithful Kishori Lal Sharma, 63. Little is known about him except that he is a low profile operative and an errand boy of the Gandhi family in Rae Bareli. He, too, filed his papers. Priyanka recalled her familys long association with Sharma, adding: He has been handling Amethi for a long time. When I had managed election for the first time in 1999, we had done it together. He knows every village and street of Amethi. Rahul said, I am happy that Kishori Lalji, who has been serving in the area for the last 40 years, will represent Amethi this time. Apparently, Rahul opted out of Amethi because he did not want the polls to be framed as a rematch between him and the BJPs feisty Smriti Irani, who had defeated him in 2019. But by fielding the foot-soldier, the party appears to have thrown in the towel. When the SP allotted Amethi and Rae Bareli to the Congress, the understanding was the Gandhi siblings would enter the fray from there. Sonia had represented Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha since 2004 before she vacated it. Both seats are family: rahul My mother has handed over the karmabhoomi of our family with great trust giving me an opportunity to serve it. Amethi and Rae Bareli are not different for me. Both are my family, Rahul said. The seat was earlier held by his grand mother and former prime minister Indira Gandhi thrice (1967, 1971, 1980) and grandad Feroze Gandhi in 1952 and 1957
