Elephant in the Room: Political Power Plays in Bengal's Jangal Mahal

Elephant in the Room: Political Power Plays in Bengal's Jangal Mahal Sixty-something Parikala Mahato trembled in fear as she tried to recount the horrors of the attack of a stray tusker in the Nayagram-Murakata forest that borders her village Metala. Although Parikala barely managed to escape the attack, her neighbour Urmila Mahato wasn't as lucky. Urmila, crushed under the feet of the rogue pachyderm on May 15, was the latest victim of an elephant attack in the Medinipur forest range where deaths and destruction from instances of man-animal conflict continue to take place at regular intervals. ''Three of us were returning home after collecting Kendu leaves from the forest. There was a faint sound of rustling of leaves from behind. I only saw the beast from the corner of my eye, then heard Urmila's scream and ran for my life,'' Parikala said in disjointed sentences before breaking down. ''We had no idea that an elephant was roaming in the vicinity. No one told us,'' added Kalpana Mahato, the third member of the ill-fated group. Located on the edges of a forest some 22 km from Medinipur town with no metalled road in about the last five, Metala is home to a handful of Kurmi-Mahatos, a scheduled caste community who barely make ends meet from forest produce like Kendu and Sal leaves. Villagers said they would vote on May 25 when the Medinipur Lok Sabha seat goes to the polls, but had little hope about the government finding a permanent solution to their perpetual fear of elephant attacks they have to live with. Dhanapati Mahato, the victim's younger son and a daily wager, said he heard that the family would be given compensation of Rs 5 lakh, and some money by the state to conduct his mother's last rites, although he wasn't sure of it. ''I lost my mother. How can money compensate for that loss?'' he asked, stressing on the family's dire need for a government job. ''I will vote since everybody else in this village will. But, I don't think my vote will help end our woes. The circumstances here are quite hopeless. The government must find a way to restrict elephant movement from Jharkhand to this side in Bengal. Even electrical fences around human habitations are not being put up,'' he said. The villagers of Metala revealed how an elephant herd raided a neighouring settlement some months ago and destroyed huts. They grudged having perpetually remained in the blind spot of political parties who allegedly never lent an ear to their woes. ''Who should we raise our concerns with? No candidate has ever set foot in our village. Not even before the elections. We have never seen our representatives we have voted for year after year. Who will listen to our anguishes?'' Sachin Mahato, a village elder, rued. Some 7 km away in Murakata village, 40-year-old Debkumar Ghorai recounted how a bull impaled his mother, Shila Ghorai, with its horn when she had gone to the adjacent forest in the early hours of March 26 last year. ''She was alive till we took her to the hospital. But her wounds were so severe, she succumbed,'' he said, fighting his tears. Besides receiving ex gratia, Ghorai now has the casual job of a forest 'volunteer', earning Rs 12,000 a month, as part of the solatium package. A father of two school-going children who keep straying into the forest-covered neighbourhood while playing outdoors, Ghorai said that he keeps his fingers crossed against a repeat of the tragedy that struck his family. ''Not just human lives, instances of elephant herds raiding farmlands and crop godowns have also increased manifold, causing financial losses to farmers in this region,'' he said, advocating for the need to put up steel wire fences around villages to deter both humans and animals from straying into each other's territory. Rakesh Singha Dev, a primary school teacher in Salboni, said incidents of man-animal conflict in the Medinipur-Jhargram belt have shot up in recent times on account of the unbridled expansion of human footprint in forest areas and significant growth of elephant population, estimated to be at two-three times the count recorded in the last elephant census that took place in 2017. ''Unofficial estimates put human casualties on account of elephant attacks in the Jangal Mahal region at 25-30 a year,'' Dev claimed. ''The corresponding figure for the pachyderms stands at around 10, for a variety of reasons, including electrocution, poisoning and railway track accidents,'' he added. Dev explained that the forests of Jangal Mahal are ''mono-culture'' in character where only a single variety of trees like Sal and Eucalyptus grow, and largely prove to be deficient as food sources for large animals. An adult elephant requires around 1 quintal of food and some 150 litres of water daily to sustain itself, he said. ''Elephants are a highly intelligent species and have learned from survival experiences that they can make do with less food if they consume man-grown crops and vegetables which have higher nutrient value than what is available in forests. Hence, there is a greater tendency among the animals to raid farmlands and villages even if that means taking greater risks,'' he added. Deepak M, the divisional forest officer of Medinipur range, said that both human and elephant deaths have sharply reduced in West Bengal in the last five years on account of the state's twin focus on increased monitoring of herd movements inside forests and awareness campaigns among locals on how to stay away from their route. ''Currently there are some 220 elephants in the Medinipur range. We are using technology such as drone monitoring as well as local sources to keep track of the herds. Villagers are constantly alerted in the eventuality of the animals coming close to human habitats,'' he said. Asserting that ''awareness is the key'' to reducing fatalities, the DFO said that the only sustainable solution to the conflict is ''man learning to live together with the animals''.

The Nevermets: love is weird in this evil version of First Dates

Long-distance couples meet for the first time, including a pair who started out in a Game of Thrones roleplay chatroom. It is bizarre but strangely sweet to witness When the internet was invented nobody used their real names on it, and I am starting to wonder if breaking that covenant was a mistake. Starting to wonder correction, I am fully sure that was an error. We need to go back to usernames xX_tha_0rin0c0_Xx, that sort of thing and anonymity and no webcams and, ideally, screeching 56k modems. The internet is too fast, too accessible, too always-on. Our phones can suck internet out of the sky and the idea of logging off is extinct. I am planning to start one of those one-topic political parties that always get obliterated at London mayoral elections about this, by the way, sokeep your eyes out. Anyway. As we all know, what Channel 4 excels at is documentaries that can be described as sweet but weird, and this week The Nevermets starts (Friday 24 May, 10pm), which is a classic of the genre. The Nevermets follows a series of, as narrator Dawn French keeps describing them, ordinary Brits, as they look at their phone screens and smile in bed. This is because they are all in love with someone across the world who they met in a chatroom or on Snapchat, or from extended Instagram or Facebook conversations, and despite, in many cases, the couples professing to be in love with each other they have never actually, you know, met. So we get to see them meet. Continue reading...

Documentary 'I Am Sirat' explores transgender identity and the quest for maternal acceptance

In 2014, the apex court of India declared transgender as the third gender, whose members could self-identify their gender and enjoy fundamental rights. This landmark judgment, although it changed things on paper, has not fundamentally changed societal perception of transgenders. This is reflected in the family relationship shown in a Deepa Mehta film. How does a mother come to terms with her son who has discovered her identity as a woman? This is the storyline of the 90-minute documentary I Am Sirat. Directed by the Oscar-nominated film director and screenwriter Deepa Mehta and the star of the film Sirat Taneja, a transgender woman actor, the film explores the dual life of Sirat, who must act like a son while at home with her mother while being herself outside. The film is shot using mobile-phone cameras. Sirat handles the self-documentation with vertical shots on her mobile, while Mehta films the horizontal shots, primarily in the form of interviews, on hers. I met Sirat in 2018 while shooting for the Netflix series Leila in which she played a transgender guard. We stayed in touch, and she told me she wanted a film made about her life to convince her mother to accept her as a daughter. Thats why I agreed to do this, says Mehta. Passing the mic The film first premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Film at the London Film Festival that year. It was recently screened at Delhis India International Centre during the Engendereds iView World Film Festival, and hosted by its curator, founder and director, Myna Mukherjee. Our focus has always been gender and marginal voices and this film not only emphasises these voices but also passes the mic to themhalf of the film is shot by a transgender woman, says Mukherjee. A still from the film depicting Sirat as Aman when she is with her mother The film begins with a vertical shot of Sirat in an auto, changing from the clothes she wears at home as Aman into a dress, unconcerned about onlookers. It then cuts to Sirats home, where she talks to her mother as a son. The locations in I Am Sirat are not extraordinary; they just happen to be the places Sirat regularly visits. The entire film follows Sirats daily journey: she leaves her home as Aman, goes to a rented place to change, heads to work, and then returns to the rented place to change back into Aman before going home at the end of the day. Mehta showcases Sirats struggle with living a dual life, transitioning between identities. While we were shooting at her house, her mother was unaware of the films true subject. She thought it was about Aman, says Mehta. The constant switching of identities, however, has been tough on Sirat. Sometimes she accidentally uses feminine verb-forms when speaking to her mother. Its very confusing. There have been times when my mother called for me, and I replied as a daughter, saying, Mummy, mai aa rahi hu, she says. Metaphors not the solution The frequent transitions from Sirat to Aman are exhausting, and while the film effectively conveys this struggle, it lacks an emotional connection. For instance, Sirat mentions being thrown out of her house when she was younger, but the film does not explain how she made peace with living with her mother again. The documentary feels like stepping into Sirats Instagram account and mindlessly scrolling through her reels. Furthermore, the switch from vertical to horizontal shots at times, feels like visual jerks. Though Mehta insists the work is a collaboration and denies any creative differences between the directors, the film often suggests otherwise. The heavy use of metaphors and registers, while conveying strong messages, can seem forced. For example, the metaphor of Toba Tek Singh, a story by Saadat Hasan Manto about inmates in a Lahore asylum, some of whom were moved to India after Partition. In the end, one inmate sleeps under the barbed wires of no mans land, not belonging to either country. This metaphor is used in the film to depict Sirats dual life, fearing that she, too, will end up in a no mans land, belonging nowhere. Also, the film concludes with Sirat singing Hum Dekhenge,Sirat, as seen in the film, usually seems to prefer tacky Bollywood favouritesa song chosen by Mehta, left mixed feelings. Faizs anti-establishment poem is a rebel anthem for sure but did Mehta have to push her hand so hard in a film that is mainly focused on Sirat gaining her mothers acceptance? Nevertheless, films like I Am Sirat are important because they sensitise people and shift their perceptions of the world, says Mukherjee. Sirat is also happy with the films reception. I have yet to make my mother watch this film, but some of my relatives already have, and a few of them have accepted me as I am. You can live however you want to, they said, she says.

Ugandan caught smuggling heroin gets 10 years RI

BENGALURU: A Ugandan man has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a special Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court recently for smuggling heroin worth Rs 10 crore from Sharjah to Bengaluru. He has already completed over two years in jail and needs to complete the rest of his sentence. The verdict, delivered by City Civil and Sessions judge BS Jayshree of the NDPS court, also includes a fine of Rs 1 lakh or an additional year of imprisonment in case of failure to pay it. The verdict dates back to an incident that occurred on February 16, 2022, when Katongole Patrick (29 years of age at that time) was caught attempting to smuggle 847 grams of heroin. He had concealed the substance as oval capsules and had swallowed them. Following an intelligence tipoff, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) caught him, a source told TNIE. Patrick, who arrived by an Air Arabia flight, was planning to leave for Delhi when he was caught. It was heroin of extremely superior quality with a market value of Rs 10 crore. The incident created quite a stir as it was the first time someone had tried to smuggle such a huge quantity through ones stomach, the source added. The Ugandan was then taken to a local government hospital to facilitate extrication of the capsules, he added. He confessed that they were not intended for Bengaluru, but for Delhi. Patrick is already incarcerated in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison and will be made to complete his 10-year term, he added. This is the second verdict delivered in recent times, when a foreigner has been sent to 10 years in jail. The previous instance involved a Zimbabwean, Masumba Taradzwa, who was caught by the DRI for smuggling 8 kg and 140 grams of heroin. That was of ordinary quality and valued at Rs 30 crore. The incident occurred on June 30, 2021, and he is also lodged in the Central jail, the source said.

IMD predicts severe heatwave days in north India

NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast severe heatwave over plains of northwest, Bihar, east and central India in the next five days. The forecast indicates that northwestern India, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi, will experience a period of intense heat for five days. It will include unusually warm night time temperatures, which can intensify the risk of heat-related illness and death, IMD said in its forecast on Thursday. In its advisory, the weather department said intense heat will lead to high health concerns for vulnerable people, such as infants, elderly, and people with chronic diseases. It suggested avoiding heat exposure and dehydration. On Friday, 43 districts of northwest and central India reported temperature over 42 degrees Celsius, Agra Taj recording the highest at 46.9C. IMD observed heat wave conditions at most places over west and east Rajasthan, in some pockets over Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, and isolated pockets over east Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. The threshold for a heat wave is met when the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas, and 30 degrees in the hilly regions, and the departure from normal is 4.5C to 6.4C and more. In the case of a warm night, the minimum temperature departure from normal is 4.5C to 6.4C. In the meantime, US-based Climate Central organisation has released the latest climate shift index (CSI) a tool that quantifies the contribution of climate change to daily temperatures showing that western India, including Delhi, will experience a period of intense heat in the next three days. CSI levels above one indicate climate change. According to the index, daily high temperatures are expected to run 3C to more than 6C above average. The organisation has forecast that high temperatures will exceed 45C in many locations. In parts of Haryana state, maximum temperatures could surpass 47C. In addition to maximum temperatures, night time will also be warmer. According to CSI, night time low temperatures are not expected to fall below 34C and in parts of Rajasthan state, nighttime temperatures are not expected to fall below 37C. Experts say human-caused climate change made heatwave conditions more intense. Human-caused climate change has made this intense heat much more likely and the overnight temperatures make this event alarming, said Andrew Pershing of Climate Central.

INDIA bloc will get 300 seats, all set to form government after June 4

AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal claims that the INDIA bloc will win 300 seats and form the government after June 4. He tells Preetha Nair that all the constitutional bodies have been compromised under the BJP government and also accuses the Election Commission of being biased against Opposition parties. Excerpts: After the four phases, the INDIA alliance has been exuding confidence that the tide is in your favour. What is your assessment? We are confident that the INDIA alliance will get 300 seats and we will form the government after the election. The general mood in the Hindi heartland has changed in favour of the INDIA alliance. In the southern states, we are far ahead of the BJP. Out of the 28 seats in Karnataka, we expect to get a two-third majority. We secured only three seats in Telangana in the 2019 elections, but this time we will get 11-12 seats. In Kerala, the Congress will sweep the elections. The BJP will get zero seats in Tamil Nadu, and the alliance will sweep. In Maharashtra, too, the Maha Vikas Aghadi is poised to get at least half of the total seats. In Bihar also, we will score very well. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP will lose 15- 20 seats and the INDIA may get around 40 seats. Our calculation is that we may get 10 seats in Rajasthan and 5- 6 in Haryana. But the BJP claims that it has crossed 270-mark after the four phases... In the beginning of the election, PM Modi set a target of 400 seats for the BJP. But the ground reality is entirely different. Now the BJP realised that it is losing many seats that it has won last time. The party is in panic. That is why the PM resorted to low-level attacks on secularism and religious identities. This hasnt happened in the history of Indian politics. Elections will come and go. But people have to live together. The PM is the first person to think about that. But unfortunately, there is no thinking from his side. If they are confident of getting 400 seats, why are they stooping to such levels? They are only talking about polarisation agendas. There is no talk of pressing issues such as unemployment, price rise, womens safety or agrarian crisis. People are fed up with this government. Do you see a repeat of 2004 this time? I would say that it will be a repeat of the 2009 elections. The government granted citizenship to its first batch of 14 refugees under the Citizenship Amendment Act on Wednesday. PM Modi said nobody can remove CAA. What is your partys position on this? The PM doesnt want to talk about the real issues in this election. We dont want to follow his agenda. Our position is that we will give citizenship to genuine people who deserve citizenship. Their agenda is to divide the people based on religion and communities, The CAA was passed in 2019 and they framed the rules after five years in 2024, Now in the middle of the election, they implemented it. The Congress is contesting fewer seats than ever in this election to accommodate INDIA bloc partners. Will the party make compromises if the INDIA bloc wins this election? This is a hypothetical question. I dont want to comment on that. We made sacrifices to reduce the maximum number of seats for the BJP. We have made sacrifices during the process of alliance discussions. Our country is going through a dangerous period under this government. Entire constitutional bodies have been compromised including the Election Commission of India. The Prime Minister is making hate speeches daily and the EC is a mute spectator. The EC is only there to act against the Opposition parties. PM Modi said that if the INDIA bloc gets a majority to form a government then the alliance has plans of appointing five Prime Ministers with one PM every year. This brings up the question of the PMs face for the alliance.. The PM is making such statements out of desperation. We will decide our PM candidate within 24 hours of the announcement of results. The new PM will rule for five years. Is Congress pitching for Rahul Gandhi as PM face? This is not the time to talk about it. After winning the election, we will sit together and decide the Prime Minister candidate. The PM has been attacking the Congress with allegations of appeasing Muslims and being anti-Hindu. He claimed that 15% of the UPA governments budget was for Muslims. How can the Prime Minister tell such lies to the country? Hes talking about the Muslim community and the Congress wants to ask him what he has given to the Hindus. The majority of the Indian youth are Hindus and are unemployed. Take the case of farmers, women and others..I dont want to talk like the BJP, But for the sake of argument, I want to ask them. He is only concerned about two or three Hindus like Adani and Ambani. PM Modi says that Congress will provide reservations to Muslims from the quotas earmarked for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). At least four leaders of the BJP have spoken about changing the constitution if they get 400 seats in this election. Their idea is to give away this reservation system. When we complained to the Election Commission, then the BJP turned the table on us by saying that we will take away the SC/ST reservation. No one can change the OBC, SC/ST reservation system. We wont allow it, come what may. Will we see Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Congress top leaders campaigning together in the coming phases? State leaders are focusing on state-level programmes. There is no combined INDIA leaders programme anywhere. In Uttar Pradesh, we have an alliance with Samajwadi Party. That is why we are having joint programmes with Akhilesh today. Whenever we have joint programmes in Delhi, we will join the AAP leaders. INDIA bloc will win more than 300 seats in Lok Sabha elections: Uddhav

Follow these tips for healthy and shiny skin, face will glow

In the scorching heat of summer, people often find themselves exposed to the sun's rays while spending time outdoors or swimming, which can leave their skin dry and lifeless. To protect and nourish the skin, body butter serves as an effective remedy. Creating body butter at home using natural ingredients is incredibly simple and offers numerous benefits for maintaining glowing and healthy skin. What is Body Butter? Body butter is a thick moisturizer that is used to soften and smooth the skin. It is thicker than lotions and creams, often made with essential and natural oils. It is particularly effective for dry skin, cracked heels, and sensitive skin. For those with oily skin, applying a thin layer of body butter to the face can also be beneficial. It can also be used as a makeup remover and applied to the face, arms, and legs after bathing to keep the skin moisturized. Benefits of Body Butter: Keeps Skin Smooth and Soft: During the hot weather, many people struggle with itching and dryness. Applying body butter before heading out can help soothe and moisturize the skin, reducing roughness and flakiness with the help of natural oils. Aids in Skin Nourishment: Body butter contains essential oils and other ingredients that replenish vitamins and minerals in the skin. It helps alleviate inflammation and repair damaged skin cells, promoting overall skin health with regular use. Rich in Anti-Aging Properties: Regular use of body butter can help diminish fine lines on the face, combatting free radicals, and increasing collagen production with ingredients like mango and shea butter, resulting in firmer and more youthful-looking skin. Protection from Sun Damage: Vitamin E and almond oil in body butter help protect the skin from sun damage, while aloe vera gel provides a cooling effect and locks in moisture. Daily application ensures the skin receives proper nourishment. Steps to Make Body Butter: To keep the skin moisturized, mix 2 tablespoons each of jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, and coconut oil in a bowl. Add 4 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, 2 capsules of vitamin E, and vitamin K, and mix well. To make the mixture smooth and creamy, add 1 tablespoon of mango butter and an equal amount of shea butter and blend. Depending on preference, add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance and mix in 2 tablespoons of cornstarch. Blend all ingredients together, melting mango and shea butter if they are not soft beforehand. After blending, transfer the mixture to a pan, stir for a while until it thickens, and a smooth paste is formed. Allow the body butter to cool, then refrigerate for 5 to 6 hours until set. Use the prepared body butter after bathing to moisturize the skin. In conclusion, homemade body butter offers a natural and effective solution for maintaining healthy and radiant skin, especially during the harsh summer months. With its nourishing ingredients and easy preparation, it's a skincare essential worth incorporating into your routine. Turn a Live Photo into a Boomerang

Most iPhone users are familiar with Apple's Live Photos , which capture 1.5 seconds of video before and after you take a picture, with the aim of adding a little bit of life and movement to still images. What some users might not know is that you can also make a Live Photo bounce back and forth like a boomerang. If you're familiar with Instagram, you probably know what a boomerang is. Since introducing Live Photos in 2015, Apple has added some effects to its Photos app that let you turn them into fun animated clips, and the Bounce effect is basically the same thing as a boomerang. It rewinds the action backward and forward. Here's how to make one of your own on iPhone. Open the Photos app and select a Live Photo. (If you look under Media Types in the Albums section, you'll find all of your Live Photos collated in a folder of the same name.) With the Live Photo open, tap the LIVE icon in the top-left corner of the interface. From the dropdown menu that appears, choose Bounce . The effect you choose will be applied immediately, ready for you to share it using the Share icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen. Note that there are two other effects that you can try in Photos: Loop repeats the action in a continuous looping video, and Long Exposure simulates a DSLR-like long exposure effect by blurring motion. Did you know that it you get a blurry Live Photo image, you can open it up and see if other frames you captured are clearer, and then select a replacement key photo for it . Click the link to learn how it's done. This article, Turn a Live Photo into a Boomerang first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Our goal is to spread awareness: EMotorads Aditya Oza on the brands marketing strategy

The Indian E-bike market size is estimated at USD 27 million in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 60.93 million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 17.68% during the forecast period (2024-2029), as per a report by Mordor Intelligence. The report also suggests that an estimated 79.16 % of students and wage workers in the urban regions utilise bicycles for daily commuting and benefits such as time-saving and cheap maintenance. In this market, the electric cycle brand EMotorad aims to spread awareness and to be easily found during the search process. Recently, the brand garnered attention with its viral campaign featuring cricketer MS Dhoni, where Dhoni appears to be singing to the tunes of Bole Jo Koyal . The video goes back to a viral meme from 2019, where a Dhoni look-alike danced to the same song. Aditya Oza , Chief Marketing Officer of EMotorad says, Our goal was to create something organic that the world would love and spread quickly, ensuring recognition would come faster. This collaboration not only elevated the brand's visibility but also resonated with a wide audience across various age groups and income brackets. Overall, Oza mentions that it has reached close to 200 million views across the internet, including YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. So much so, the brand has experienced a growth rate of over 370% in India during FY24, with its customer base now exceeding 100,000 globally. The brand has strategically positioned itself to cater to diverse consumer segments, from teenagers to health-conscious individuals and commuters. In conversation with Social Samosa, CMO Aditya Oza sheds light on the brand's approach to reaching out to consumers and the role of content in their marketing strategy. With a focus on creating engaging and relatable content, EMotorad aims to build trust and awareness among potential buyers, ultimately influencing their purchasing decisions. Oza shares the objective behind its campaigns, its attempt to reach out to the younger generation through relatable content, raising brand awareness and not wanting to become a one-off success in marketing. Edited Excerpts: Let's talk about EMotorad's latest campaign with MS Dhoni. Could you share the idea behind the campaign, the research that went into it and the objective behind the same? There were a few reasons why we got MS Dhoni on board. We know we are creating a new category in the market. To create a category, you need to identify all the domains your audience belongs to. For us, it is not just one single domain. Teenagers are a big part of our audience, as are health seekers. In todays world, cycling should be recycled, and its a significant part of our audience. We see a lot of interest from Tier III and Tier IV towns and from the B3 income group and below. At seven paise per kilometre, it's a great way to commute, especially since scooters today amount close to Rs. One lakh. We thought there had to be something more affordable, and our product is available at around Rs. 24,000, which is a good price point. Given the diversity of our audience, we wanted someone who could speak to all of them and hold value across different segments. Most Bollywood celebrities and cricketers don't have the universal appeal we needed. They either dont resonate with all markets or income classes. Then the idea of onboarding MS Dhoni came up. Initially, we didn't have the budget to pull this off, so we re-evaluated our approach. MS Dhoni ticked all the boxes for us. Our journey has been similar to his; starting in 2020, no one would have bet on a company making electric cycles out of India. We are fortunate to have visionary investors who believe in us. MSs journey from Ranchi to living the dreams of billions was a perfect value match for us. When we connected with him, we realized he is not just a celebrity but someone who genuinely shares our values. Many celebrities have a different persona off-screen, but MS was different. His down-to-earth nature and genuine interest in our vision made him the perfect fit. Fortunately, he came on board not just as someone to endorse our brand but also as an investor who believes in our vision. Now its our time to prove him right and achieve bigger things. Could you share how this has actually helped you reach the audiences? Frankly, with MS Dhoni, you see so many brands working with him recently. There are so many brands he works with, and he seems to fit with almost any brand. We knew MS would get the job done for us, but we wanted to do more. The idea was to leverage his ability to drive organic reach. For example, Candy Crush saw record-breaking downloadsthree and a half million in one dayjust because MS was seen playing it, without any brand association. This demonstrates the deep connection he has with the audience. Our goal was to create something organic that the world would love and spread quickly, ensuring recognition would come faster. However, we also wanted to ensure our message reached the right audience. The idea was to create something appealing to everyone, even without knowing the context of what was happening. How far did this ad reach on social media or otherwise? We saw some impressive numbers from the content we put forward. On Instagram, we reached around 18 million views, on YouTube, we hit a million views. Our YouTube following grew from about 1,000 to 25,000, which is fantastic for us. This tremendous growth shows the impact were making. We noticed significant engagement from shares as well. The content travelled far beyond our initial reach. When we accounted for it, the ad reached over 180 million views. People modified and shared different partssometimes just the singing part, other times the core message. The idea was to create content people love, and they indeed made art out of it. Overall, we believe our content has reached close to 200 million views across the internet, including YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. We even trended on Twitter for a day. All these pieces came together very well, and were grateful to everyone who shared and engaged with our content. Thank you for making it possible. Considering the campaign has been launched during IPL and has managed to get people talking, how does the brand plan to further build upon this? When we started our journey in 2020, we had a monthly marketing budget of just 20,000 rupees. Today, we couldn't even hire someone for a third of that amount. The reality is that our challenge was finding that one opportunity to make an impact. When we got it, I told the team that we weren't going to play it safe. We needed to take risks, as our jobs were on the line. We aimed to do the best we could and try the most random things. If we failed, at least we wouldn't regret not giving it a shot. We have experienced people in marketing and guidance from consultants and investors with the biggest brands. Despite their advice to create something concrete with long-term value, we decided to do something quirky and fun, delivering what the internet really wants. It was a bold move, but we believed in it. If it didn't work, we'd accept the consequences, but we didn't want to think that way. We wanted to try. This approach helped us, and now the message to the team is that we don't want to be known for just one great campaign. Hitting one out of one is great, but we need to keep delivering quality. People will start to have expectations from us, and we need to meet them. We have more exciting things coming up, including another collaboration with MS Dhoni in a couple of weeks. Our goal is to continue creating impactful campaigns with smart spending and to keep doing this over time. Well be attempting more innovative things, especially during key seasons. Considering the campaign has raised awareness about the brand, how do you plan to increase your marketing budget? I think our marketing budgets might not make sense in this context because we are not just an India-based entity. We are the biggest exporter of electric cycles from India. In the easy-to-ride category, there arent many exporters from India. Many importers and a few companies are exporting in significant numbers, but we do a lot of exports. Our budget process starts with identifying our top-line goals across segments, including India B2C, international B2B, and our presence in markets like Australia, Europe, and Japan. Japan operates in a distributor model, while we have a B2C capacity in other regions. First, we determine the overall target and then allocate a percentage to marketing. In marketing, we prioritise targets and reasons, identifying key markets. India is one of our top priority markets, along with our white-label B2B business in Europe. We then segregate the budget accordingly. The numbers vary, and we adjust the budget based on market performance and strategic targetswhether to grow the market or capture market share. India is a market we plan to grow, while in Europe, we aim to increase our market share. Different objectives require different priorities, so if certain markets need more budget, we reassess and adjust as necessary. Does the brand plan on associating with different sports tournaments? I think it all boils down to the kind of spends you want to make and the ROI youre getting. While IPL has valuable properties, they require heavy spending. Today, we want to explore different strategies rather than just sponsoring a few spots. We have participated in a couple of IPL matches, but we want to scale up at the right time. For now, we are still experimenting with various approaches and dont want to allocate all our budget to one area. Hopefully, in the future, we can expand our IPL involvement, but today, we are focused on trying out different things. What is your target audience, and which geographic regions do you focus on? Could you share the thought process behind the campaigns launched by the brand for the different age groups you are targeting? When it comes to our target audience, a few segments have worked well for us so far. Anyone in the market for a bicycle would find our product cooler and end up choosing us, even if it requires spending a bit more. Teenagers are becoming a fast-growing market for us. The word of mouth travels very well among teenagers. I remember when I was young, having a geared cycle was a big deal. If one person in the group had it, everyone wanted it. That kind of word of mouth doesnt happen as much with other age groups. Another target group is those seeking a bicycle for both health and commuting. For instance, someone working in an office all day might use the throttle to ride to work without sweating and then pedal home for exercise. Theres also a group using it for health and lifestyle, who enjoy long rides for fitness. We also see value for money as a key factor. For Rs. 24,000 and seven paise per kilometer, our product makes a lot of sense for this segment. Additionally, we are focusing on younger age groups. We are finalising a product for children under eight or nine years old so they can start riding our bikes early and later upgrade to larger models. I noticed your campaigns have made use of internet culture with memes and Gen Z lingos playing key roles. A similar theme follows your social media. How does social media contribute to reaching out to the target audience? Do you utilise the power of influencers in your marketing strategy? How has it helped? Influencers are a critical part of our strategy for two main reasons: spreading awareness and being discovered. Many people, when considering an electric cycle, enter search mode to figure out which one to buy. Our goal is twofold: first, to spread awareness, and second, to be easily found during the search process. We aim to build trust with consumers as they research their options. When we collaborate with influencers, we ensure that the content is engaging and showcases the joy our product can bring to daily commutes. For example, one of my favourite campaigns was the Daddy of all E-cycles campaign with actor Upendra Limaye. He brought an authentic and joyful portrayal to the campaign, both on and off the camera. In our marketing efforts, we strive to create content that we, as consumers, would enjoy. Our philosophy is to produce memorable and impactful content. We aim to be in people's consideration when they decide to make a purchase, rather than pushing them to buy. While performance marketing and down-funnel strategies drive conversions, our awareness campaigns are about making a lasting impression. The goal is to ensure that when consumers are ready to buy, they think of us first. Can you talk about the mediums you use to promote your brand and products? We've tried and tested various channels, conducting trials at minimal cost to assess effectiveness. For instance, we've experimented with outdoor advertising, newspapers, radio, and even participated in cyclathons like India's first electric cycle event in Bangalore. We also leverage influencers, Google ads, and performance ads on e-commerce channels, which are crucial for driving conversions. While we've explored many channels, we believe there's still a long way to go in fully utilizing print, radio, and outdoor media. These avenues are yet to be fully incorporated into our campaigns, but we may include them with a cautious approach in the future. Digital is a platform where we can easily adjust and stop if something isnt working. That's the main reason behind our focus on it. Today, were seeing results because its such a targeted niche market. However, as our product line and market grow, we believe that expanding to other mediums may offer a better return on investment. What is your current market share and how do you plan on expanding your presence? Our current market share is significant, as we are the highest-selling electric cycle brand in India, both online and offline. We have around 12 E-bike outlets in cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, and others, which contribute significantly to our sales. While offline sales fluctuate and are challenging to quantify precisely, our online presence is dominant. During Diwali, we held a market share of close to 58% overall in the online space. However, this isn't necessarily good news for us, as it indicates that other brands are not doing enough to grow the market. Our goal isn't just to gain more market share but to expand the market itself. We want to make the pie bigger for everyone to have a stake. We encourage other players in the category to invest in spreading awareness and contributing to the growth of the electric cycle market. Electric cycles offer a fantastic commuting option for various purposes, such as office and school commutes. They are suitable for different members of the family and don't require licenses or registration. It's time for other players in the category to invest in raising awareness and promoting the benefits of electric cycles. The brand was launched only in 2020 and has already reached a global audience. What research did EMotorad conduct before going global? We didn't need to conduct much research before starting our electric cycle brand in India. At that time, many would have dismissed the idea, but we recognised a global product-market fit (PMF). India has a history of adopting products over time. Trends that originated in the West eventually make their way to India. We understood that our product had a global PMF, so we weren't just targeting the Indian market; we were aiming for a broader audience. This approach proved to be a game-changer for us. By focusing on building a product that met European, US, and Japanese standards, we ensured quality. Although this increased our production costs, it resulted in fewer issues compared to traditional bicycles. Electric cycles require specialised maintenance, and not every local mechanic can handle them. This was a key learning for us and other legacy players in the industry. We knew that if we could manufacture high-quality electric cycles, they would find buyers globally and in India. Our success in the early days stemmed from having a superior product, which also attracted industry professionals to join us in our journey. Aditya, how did your experience handling leadership positions in Dubai, Abudhabi, India, Spain and Canada, help in marketing in different regions? Regardless of where and how you work, understanding the core consumer is crucial. Fortunately, in Dubai, people from all over the world come to work, so I had the opportunity to closely interact with Europeans and Australians, who were more numerous than other nationalities. Ultimately, understanding the consumer and their preferences is key. If you're unfamiliar with a market, you have to rely on research and talking to people to gain insights. For example, when we explored the Japanese market, my co-founder Rajib and I travelled there, spoke to numerous people, and relied on translators to navigate conversations. Understanding a market like India, where you have an edge due to familiarity with the consumer, is advantageous. However, being unfamiliar with a market can also offer a different perspective that others may overlook. Regardless of your experience, starting research from the ground up and talking to consumers is essential. Trusting your instincts and experimenting while learning from peers and accessing resources online are valuable tools in marketing today. What are some trends you've noticed in the two-wheeler segment, and how does EMotorad shape its marketing based on this trend? There's a great influx of startups entering the electric two-wheeler segment, and they seem to be dominating the market more than legacy brands. Another trend is that legacy brands are also preparing to enter the market with their own electric two-wheelers. Looking ahead, India's growth extends beyond its borders. It's not just about meeting India's needs; it's about exporting quality electric scooters and cycles to the world. Just as India manufactures a significant percentage of the world's iPhones, we should aim for a similar position in the electric two-wheeler market. Now is the time for India to demonstrate its capabilities to the world. Startups are moving at a rapid pace, and there's a need for legacy companies to join in. Bajaj, for instance, has made significant strides with its electric vehicles, particularly in Africa and South America. It's time for all of us to come together and showcase our potential on a global scale. Instead of just competing within the Indian market, we should aim to capture a larger share of the global market. Could you walk me through the brand's short-term and long-term marketing goals for the next two years? We view each year as a milestone in our marketing journey, with numerous short-term goals to achieve. Our long-term marketing objective is to establish electric cycles as a desirable brand, not only in India but also internationally. Short-term goals include establishing a market presence in India across various segments and providing excellent value for money in B2B partnerships. We aim to collaborate with significant clients and are currently in discussions for international distribution, particularly in the US. Additionally, we have technical goals related to sales targets and marketing spend. While these targets are in place, our overarching goal is to build a brand that resonates with people and makes electric cycles a preferred choice for transportation.

To mark this anniversary, the House of Suntory will be rolling out its centennial campaign throughout 2023. About Toki Suntory Whisky Toki, meaning time, is a concept that is deeply-woven into the Japanese way of life - a concept rich in meaning the world over, yet especially in Japan, where regard for convention and re-evaluation starts an amazing inventive vitality. The House of Suntorys fourth Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo was inspired to create a blend that is both groundbreaking and timeless, leading him to take a fresh approach with Toki. By bringing the grain component of the blend from the Chita distillery, where the heavy-type grain spirit is distilled only twice on column stills, and is vanilla-rich with a sweet undertone in its unblended state. Shinji-san sourced the malt component from the Hakushu distillery, which produces light, fruity malt similar to many Speyside distilleries. The unique pairing of Hakushu American White Oak Cask malt spirit with Chita heavy-type grain spirit overturns the traditional hierarchy between malt and grain. These seemingly dissimilar but deeply accordant spirits, together with select Yamazaki malts for additional depth and complexity give rise to the exquisite, silky taste, distinctive character and bold innovation of the blended Toki Suntory Whisky. She commands a humongous net worth of over 550 crores and we love her for all the right reasons. From her multiple Miss Universe conquests to guiding people as a judge and frontline Bollywood superstar, the alluring and charming actress has certainly come a long way forward in her life, all thanks to her discipline, hard work, determination and perseverance. Currently, Urvashi Rautela is enjoying humongous amount of love and appreciation at the 77th Festival de Cannes. Some time back, we all loved the way she made India proud at the global level once again by winning a special award honour and that too in the presence of the iconic Meryl Streep. Even her red beautiful, exquisite fuchsia gown that she sported earlier from the Serene collection 2024 by Khaled and Marwan, which was 7 times the cost of Alia Bhatt's Met Gala outfit caught attention. And now, seems like Urvashi is in mood for creating some seriously amazing records one after the other. Yes, that's right. Urvashi Rautela sported a beautiful custom-made gown by Tunisian fashion designer Souhir El Gabsi at the premiere of Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis and well, we are absolutely spellbound seeing her enchanting look. Till today, this is the biggest ball gown that any other celebrity has ever work in history and no wonder, this world record is making all Urvashi Rautela fans all over the globe immensely happy and proud. Her magnetic avatar enhanced all the way more, all thanks to the beautiful Oceana clutches that she wore by Rima & Rashi and well, it's certainly sending shockwaves all over the world. As she arrived for the event, she happily posed for the media and fans, thereby helping them etch a beautiful memory forever for the rest of their lives. Given the opulence involved in creating this look, this world record is set to remain unbeaten for quite some time now, until and unless, Urvashi Rautela herself decides to break her own record. Chemical manufacturers manage 1,500+ compliances for single unit

The Cyberabad special operation team caught two persons red-handed while they were dumping untreated chemical waste from a pharma company into a nala in Jeedimetla. (DC Image) The Cyberabad special operation team caught two persons red-handed while they were dumping untreated chemical waste from a pharma company into a nala in Jeedimetla. (DC Image) New Delhi: TeamLease Regtech, Indias leading Regulatory Technology (Regtech) solutions company, has released its report titled Simplifying Compliance Management for the Chemical Industry. The report provides an overview of the complexity of compliance and the challenges entrepreneurs and employers face in the Chemical Industry. It also delves deep into the present regulatory framework and suggests actionable recommendations for enterprises and policymakers. The chemical industry in India contributes 7% to Indias GDP and accounts for 11% of exports, with over 80,000 products. Production of this $220+ billion industry ranks 6th globally and 3rd in Asia and is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2040. In terms of employment, the industry provides jobs to over 2 million people. India is also a global supplier of dyestuffs and dye intermediaries, accounting for around 16% of the global production. A single entity, chemical manufacturing enterprise with a single manufacturing unit operating in Maharashtra faces 635 unique obligations, of which 299 (47.1%) are at the union level, 332 (52.3%) are at the state level, and 4 (0.6%) are at the municipal level. However, this figure inflates to 1,545 once we factor in the frequency of these obligations. For instance, there are 53 monthly, 93 quarterly, and 48 half-yearly compliance requirements. The company must also obtain 72 licenses, permissions, and approvals under 52 acts. Even before starting construction of the site, the corporation must also complete over 60 one-time registrations and approvals, including 10 certificates/ approvals under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. Rishi Agrawal, CEO and Co-Founder, TeamLease RegTech says, The Chemical Industry is a key driver of economic growth. The output it generates is essential for numerous sectors ranging from steel to pharmaceuticals to plastics, impacting everything from healthcare to technology. It employs over 2 million people and will be a major employment generator in Amrit Kaal. However, the complexities around compliance are a significant binding constraint to business growth. A typical chemical manufacturing company deals with 635 unique and over 1,545 total compliance obligations in a year. These compliances include at least 72 different types of licenses, permissions and registrations. It is here that digital compliance solutions and workflows can play a critical role in ensuring smooth compliance functioning within the organisation. This report explores the underlying complexities that affect employer compliance in the chemical industry. Due to the nature of the industry, companies must comply with the Chemical Weapons Convention Act, 2000 and Chemical Weapons Convention Rules, 2016, Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and Insecticides Act, 1968 and Rules, 1971, among other acts. Depending on size, chemical companies must follow hundreds of laws and thousands of rules. There is also pressure to follow the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) chemical committee and Basic Chemicals, Cosmetics, and Dyes Export Promotion Council export regulations. Compliance also depends on the location of manufacturing units (industrial areas, export-oriented units, gramme panchayats, special economic zones, etc.), quantity and severity of chemicals manufactured, and use of specific equipment. Notifying the relevant authority to change threshold quantities is also difficult. Most Indian chemical companies struggle to track compliance with so many regulations. The report reveals that an enterprise must obtain 72 licenses across Union, State, and Municipal/ Local levels. At the manufacturing unit level, labour compliances account for ~53% (334), commercial compliances make up more than 21% (136), and EHS constitutes over 15% (98) of the unique obligations. Once the frequency of these compliances is factored in, it is revealed that such a business must cater to up to 1,545 obligations in a year. These obligations rise exponentially as soon as the business increases its scale of operations and expands its geographical footprint. 53 regulations need to be complied with monthly, while 93 must be dealt with in every quarter. Tracking and managing all applicable regulatory obligations can be exceedingly difficult when done with Excel sheets dependent on people and done on an ad-hoc basis. The report concludes with recommendations for compliance reforms that can further improve the ease of doing business and provide a new-age solution for compliance management for employers.

Thelma the Unicorn review sunny Netflix cartoon offers simple pleasures

Directors Jared Hess and Lynn Wang craft a solid piece of family fun with the tale of a pony aiming for success in disguise Thelma the Unicorn, a new Netflix animated family movie, has plenty of successful tricks aimed at kids: glitter and cotton-candy pink, a pile of manure jokes, a mini-album of catchy original songs, an endearing hero in its titular singing pony-turned-unicorn. But perhaps its greatest asset is its parable of fame, easy enough for young minds reared on phones to grasp, but winking to those who understand a matching-double-denim-outfits on the red carpet reference. I have to imagine that it is bewildering to grow up aware of or aspiring to viral fame Instagram celebrities, TikTok trends, overnight Youtube stars before you even really know yourself. In the grand tradition of kids movies peppered with adult references and talking donkeys, Thelma the Unicorn, directed by Lynn Wang and Napoleon Dynamites Jared Hess, offers up plenty of glitterified, thoroughly silly fun over a decent, sunny message on staying true to yourself in the spotlight. 3 booked for threat to avenge death of gang member

KOCHI: Police are on alert for gang violence after friends of a person who was stabbed to death in Kaloor in 2022 issued a suspected death threat to the prime accused on a social media platform. Ernakulam North police registered a case against Kochi natives Althaf, Shijith and Freddy, who were buddies of Shajun Shakeer, who was murdered in a clash between two groups. On September 10, 2022, Shajun, from Vennala, and his friends attempted to barge into the house of Kiran at Chammani Lane, Kaloor. Shajun had posted provocative comments below a photo posted on Instagram by Kirans brother Kevin, who questioned the move. This triggered the tension. Anticipating trouble, Kiran let out his pet dogs but the rival gang members used pepper spray to ward off the canines. In the free-for-all that ensued, Kiran stabbed Shajun multiple times. Kiran, who was arrested by police for the murder, was released on bail last year. As the news reached the ears of his rivals, Shijith issued an incendiary post on the formers Instagram account. The post, carrying the picture of Shajun, read: Its time to pack off those who sent you to the other world. Taking cognisance of the post, police officers placed Shijith and his friends under surveillance. As a preventive measure, we registered a case against the three, including Shijith. The case was registered following a complaint by Kirans mother. We have charged them with non-bailable offences. This is to prevent them from triggering more violence, an officer said. They were booked under sections 153 (promoting enmity) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. The Shajun murder case is set to enter the trial stage at a sessions court in Kochi soon. We are trying to pacify the situation. We have spoken to members of both gangs. The movement of the accused will be monitored regularly, he added.

Florence Nightingale overcame the limits set on proper Victorian women and brought modern science and statistics to nursing

Florence Nightingale overcame the limits set on proper Victorian women and brought modern science and statistics to nursing Tempe (US), May 17 (The Conversation) For nearly 200 years, Florence Nightingales name has been synonymous with gentle compassion and mercy. In the mid-19th century, Nightingale became perhaps the most celebrated woman of her era second only to Queen Victoria for instituting sanitation practices that sharply cut death rates among British soldiers fighting in the Crimean War. A handsome bronze statue in Londons Waterloo Place has immortalised Nightingale as a slight, graceful figure carrying a lamp, the embodiment of selfless womanhood. But this iconic image overshadows many other accomplishments. Nightingale also transformed nursing into a respectable profession, founded the worlds first nursing school, used the relatively new science of statistics to improve health care outcomes and redesigned hospitals. She was also one of Western historys first advocates of health care for all. Over the five years I spent researching and writing my biographical novel about Nightingale, Flight of the Wild Swan, published March 12, 2024, my vaguely sentimental notions about her were replaced by respect for her visionary achievements. I resolved to bring into sharper focus this woman who, along with her legendary work as a war nurse, spent half a century pioneering advances in health care. The 19th century ushered in a series of revolutionary medical advancements. Nightingales contributions were a significant part of this era. Called to serve the suffering Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, on May 12, 1820, to William and Frances Nightingale, a wealthy British couple. The Nightingales raised their two daughters, Florence and her sister Parthenope, on two estates in England. William homeschooled the girls, giving them the equivalent of his own Cambridge University education. From an early age, Nightingale displayed a formidable intellect, with a particular interest in mathematics. At 16, she experienced a transcendent call to serve the suffering, a call that eventually coalesced into her determination to become a nurse. Her family objected, however, because nursing was an unsuitable occupation for young Victorian women of privilege. It was considered disreputable work with a status even lower than that of servants. But Nightingale gradually overcame her familys objections, receiving training in Germany and France. In 1853, she became the superintendent of a small hospital in London for distressed gentlewomen. The majority of her patients were educated, unmarried governesses whose health had broken down under the strain of long hours of work and negligible pay. A little over a year later, she was on her way to the Crimean War. Bringing sanitation to medicine In October 1854, Nightingale brought 38 female nurses under her supervision to Scutari Barrack in Constantinople todays Istanbul. Originally a gargantuan stone barracks for the Turkish army, Scutari was now a British hospital housing thousands of wounded English and Irish soldiers. At Scutari, she and her nurses found few provisions, little medicine or edible food, and overcrowded hospital wards full of rats, lice and raw sewage. More soldiers were dying of cholera and other infectious diseases than of battle wounds. Nightingale and her nurses set to work cleaning and procuring food, soap, bandages, medicine, clean bedding and clothes for patients. As living standards improved, Scutaris appalling death rate began to decline. It was there that Nightingales reputation as the Angel of the Crimea and the Lady with the Lamp began. Wartime journalists telegraphed their newspapers with dramatic accounts of her work. These stories ignited the publics imagination and created the indelible image of a slight, feminine figure carrying her lamp through hospital wards at night. In January 1855, British Prime Minister Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, dispatched a newly formed Sanitary Commission to the Crimea to investigate high mortality rates in the military hospital. Nightingale observed firsthand the dramatic decline in death rates as the commission cleaned out the hospitals befouled sewer systems, limewashed its walls in effect killing surface bacteria and made numerous other sanitation improvements. Nightingale was already a proponent of hygiene, fresh air and proper diet in medical care; this experience made her a committed sanitarian. When the war ended in 1856, Nightingale returned home, permanently bedridden with chronic brucellosis, then called Crimean fever. This didnt stop her from spending the rest of her life applying herself to improving health care systems in Great Britain and other countries. Using numbers to cure Statistics was a relatively new science in Nightingales time, but it aligned with her early interest in mathematics. Ultimately, Nightingale would come to believe that statistics used to help reduce mortality rates were the true measure of Gods purpose. Collaborating with William Farr, a leading figure in applying statistics to epidemiology, Nightingale analyzed extensive data on army mortality rates during the Crimean War, proving that most deaths were attributable to preventable diseases rather than battlefield injuries. She was particularly innovative in her use of graphic diagrams such as her famous rose, or coxcomb, diagram, rightly believing that attractive visuals were more impactful than the dry numbers tables favoured by the eras statisticians. As a result, in 1858, in recognition of her use of the statistical method in army sanitary reform, Nightingale was inducted into the Royal Statistical Society as the organizationss first female fellow. In 2020, the Royal Statistical Society established an annual Florence Nightingale Award for Excellence in Health and Care Analytics. In a revolutionary step, Nightingale extended her statistical methods and data visualization to other areas, ranging from hospital administration and health care management to public sanitary reform and the sources of preventable diseases. These analyses further exposed the causes of both military and civilian mortality. Educating future nurses In 1860, seeking to elevate nursing into both a science and an art, Nightingale founded the worlds first school of nursing: the Nightingale Training School for Nurses at St. Thomas Hospital, London. The female students numbering 20 to 30 at a time lived at school and wore nurses uniforms to rigorous classes on anatomy, surgical nursing, physiology, chemistry, sanitation and ethics. By the 1880s, Nightingale had accepted the newer germ theory of disease spread, and this became part of the curriculum. At the conclusion of the one-year program, Nightingale sent her nurses into the world as certified and paid health professionals. By the turn of the century, the school had graduated nearly 2,000 certified nurses. Known as Nightingales, they fanned out across Great Britain to practice skilled patient care, develop nursing care systems, teach, train and mentor. The Nightingale Training School became a pioneering model for nursing education throughout Great Britain. Similar schools would be established in Africa, America, Australia, Canada and other countries. Nightingale also wrote a bestselling book, 1859s Notes on Nursing, that guided Victorian wives in keeping members of their households healthy. Advocating for public health Nightingales long, ultimately successful effort to bring trained nurses and midwives into Englands and Irelands notorious workhouses has gone largely unacknowledged. During Victorian times, paupers in workhouses who became ill could be cared for only by other destitute workhouse residents. Nightingale wrote numerous articles emphasizing the need for public health nurses to care of the sick in these institutions, and during the 1860s she called for the abolition of Englands harsh poor laws. As a result of these efforts, workhouse nursing reforms gradually spread across England. I believe that a more fully realized understanding of Nightingales life and achievements beyond being the lady with the lamp can provide an inspirational role model for those considering careers in nursing, medical science and public health today. Shift in narrative: Is leader bigger than party?

NEW DELHI: Social media ads, posts on Instagram, Facebook, or X (formerly Twitter), videos and podcasts on YouTube, and messages and memes on WhatsAppits a digital age, and so is election campaigning. But what remains unchanged is the tradition of releasing manifestos and debates, and the politics around it. However, according to experts, a close look at recent manifestoes suggests a shift towards more leader-centric campaigns over party-centric ones. Animesh Mishra, a doctorate candidate studying the political consulting industry at the University of Delhi, notes that this shift is particularly evident in the ruling party. By studying these manifestoes, we can see a shift towards a leader-centric campaign. For instance, Prime Minister Narendra Modis name appears 73 times in the 2024 manifesto, compared to only twice in the 2014 manifesto, Mishra points out. He adds that the manifesto of the 2014 election, which was also Modis first election as the Prime Minister candidate, featured photos of BJP veterans like Murli Manohar Joshi and Lal Krishna Advani on its front page. In contrast, the 2019 manifesto exclusively featured the PM on the front page. Instagram following further hints at a leader-centric shift, as leaders have more followers on their Instagram accounts than their parties. The official Instagram account of the BJP has 7.8 million followers, while the PM has 89 million followers. Similarly, Congress has 5.3 million followers, Rahul Gandhi has 7.9 million followers, the Aam Aadmi Party has 1.5 million followers, and Arvind Kejriwal has 2.3 million followers on his Instagram account. With the advent of political consultants, political parties now operate like brands, and just as brands have influencers who create content for them, political parties are doing the same, says Mishra. Communications consultant and political campaign advisor Dilip Cherian suggests that the widespread use of mobile phones has led to more content-specific campaigns. People prefer to engage with the device in their hand rather than with someone in person. With the rise of a distracted audience constantly juggling different social media accounts, parties have started focusing their efforts on digital marketing. and social media accounts, says Cherian. Earlier, elections were about slogans. Their support was guaranteed if the party could tap into the correct demographic, whether rural or urban. However, Cherian notes, these slogans have now been replaced by catchy taglines, video memes and GIFs circulated on social media. Rural or urban, everyone is on social media now. Memes do well on these platforms, so parties are also trying to produce such content, he says. According to the 2024 Google Ad Transparency Centre report, Indian parties invested Rs 10 crore in Google ads in 2019, which increased to Rs 117 crore by January 1, 2024. The report also revealed that video content topped the list, with 82% of these ads in video format. While print posters remain relevant, their importance has diminished, notes Cherian. Posing with the PM cutouts and posting on social media not only spreads a leaders popularity but also generates content. Although it may not guarantee an increase in voter numbers, they have the potential to maintain committed votes.

South Africa urges UN's top court to order cease-fire in Gaza to shield citizens in Rafah

South Africa urges UN's top court to order cease-fire in Gaza to shield citizens in Rafah South Africa urged the United Nations' top court on Thursday to order a cease-fire in Gaza during hearings over emergency measures to halt Israel's military operation in the enclave's southern city of Rafah. It was the third time the International Court of Justice held hearings on the conflict in Gaza since South Africa filed proceedings in December at the court, based in The Hague in the Netherlands, accusing Israel of genocide. The country's ambassador to the Netherlands, Vusimuzi Madonsela, urged the panel of 15 international judges to order Israel to totally and unconditionally withdraw from the Gaza Strip. The court has already found that there is a real and imminent risk to the Palestinian people in Gaza by Israel's military operations. This may well be the last chance for the court to act, said Irish lawyer Blinne N Ghrlaigh, who is part of South Africa's legal team. Judges at the court have broad powers to order a cease-fire and other measures, although the court does not have its own enforcement apparatus. A 2022 order by the court demanding that Russia halt its full-scale invasion of Ukraine has so far gone unheeded. During hearings earlier this year, Israel strongly denied committing genocide in Gaza, saying it does all it can to spare civilians and is only targeting Hamas militants. The country says Rafah is the last stronghold of the militant group. The latest request focuses on the incursion into Rafah. South Africa argues that the military operation has far surpassed justified self-defense. Israel's actions in Rafah are part of the end game. This is the last step in the destruction of Gaza, lawyer Vaughan Lowe said. According to the latest request, the previous preliminary orders by The Hague-based court were not sufficient to address a brutal military attack on the sole remaining refuge for the people of Gaza. Israel will be allowed to answer the accusations on Friday. In January, judges ordered Israel to do all it can to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza, but the panel stopped short of ordering an end to the military offensive that has laid waste to the Palestinian enclave. In a second order in March, the court said Israel must take measures to improve the humanitarian situation. South Africa has to date submitted four requests for the international court to investigate Israel. It was granted a hearing three times. Most of Gaza's population of 2.3 million people have been displaced since fighting began. The war began with a Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7 in which Palestinian militants killed around 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages. Gaza's Health Ministry says over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war, without distinguishing between civilians and combatants in its count. South Africa initiated proceedings in December 2023 and sees the legal campaign as rooted in issues central to its identity. Its governing party, the African National Congress, has long compared Israel's policies in Gaza and the occupied West Bank to its own history under the apartheid regime of white minority rule, which restricted most Blacks to homelands. Apartheid ended in 1994. On Sunday, Egypt announced it plans to join the case. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Israeli military actions constitute a flagrant violation of international law, humanitarian law, and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 regarding the protection of civilians during wartime. Several countries have also indicated they plan to intervene, but so far only Libya, Nicaragua and Colombia have filed formal requests to do so.

How to identify and recognise temporary and trade number plates.

BHPian Senna4Ever recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Hello! After my deep dive into defense vehicle registration format, thread (Explained: How to read the number-plates of Defence vehicles), I took up some interest in registration formats for temporary and trade ('TC') registration numbers which I always felt were never much understood or described in detail. To set some context, major reason for lack of any definitive format for temporary and trade numbers have been the lack of any specific guidelines or rules from central government. This led to states and union territories taking matters in their own hand and deciding formats/rules as they deemed fit. This has thankfully changed over past few years, leading to a more unified approach for temporary and trade numbers across India. I compiled as much information as I could get recently for Wikipedia article, but I believe such topics and info have more relevance in our amazing forumTemporary registration numberMinistry of Road Transport (MoRTH) issued a notification in March 2021 introducing a new standardised format for temporary registration numbers. BHPian adigup has already made a good explanation in his thread: (Fixing HSRP number plate on a front bumper that doesn't have a dedicated slot). Lets take a recap:Format for temporary numberT MMYY AA 0123 ZZT: Registration number starts with character 'T' to represent 'Temporary'MMYY: Represents the month and year in which vehicle was purchased e.g. '1223' for vehicle purchased in December 2023AA: The usual state code for state/UT in which purchase is made0123: Four digit number issued sequentiallyZZ: One or two letters, sequence starting from 'A', followed by 'B' and so on, same as in usual registration, but resets every month in this case.Temporary numbers can be valid of upto six months and should be displayed with red text on a yellow background. This is where my gripe comes in with regards to the implementation of these new rules. While most states have adopted to this new format, the pre-existing colour requirement is still either ignored, or states/UTs remain oblivious, or dealers/customers don't want to be conspicuous for police. As a result, in most states, the general practice is to display temporary numbers with standard black-on-white lettering. Very few states have adopted this new format quite fast and correctly (e.g. Kerala) where red-on-yellow format is well adopted.Sharing one example of new format here, image courtesy of EVM Autokraft's (Mini dealer) Instagram page. 'T0424KL' for a vehicle purchased in Kerala in April 2024: Trade registration numberMost of you would be familiar with the red-plated vehicles either being tested by OEMs or test-drive vehicles at dealership. Businesses that can use this form of registration need to hold a trade certificate (hence the characters TC on registration number) e.g. manufacturer, dealer, importer or testing agency. Some background: Registration authority allots a group of trade registration numbers to the holder of a trade certificate. Trade number is not assigned to a specific vehicle directly by the registration authority (like permanent or temporary number), the holder of trade certificate instead assigns a unique number to a vehicle themselves from their available allotment. Up until a notification in September 2022, the central government guideline was very generic and only specified following: Old format for trade numberAB 12 TC XXXXAA: The usual state code for state/UT in which business is located12: Code for RTO which issues the trade registration number, same as in usual registrationTC: Short for 'Trade Certificate'XXXX: As central rules didnt define anything more than above, this could be any series of alphanumeric characters, as decided by respective state or Union TerritoryExample: MH12TC12345Now as per new guidelines, a more standardised format for trade registration numbers has been introduced:New format for trade numberAB 12 Z 0123 TC 0001AA: The usual state code for state/UT in which business is located12: Code for RTO which issues the trade registration number, same as in usual registrationZ: Represents the category of vehicle for which the trade registration number has been issued. Character used for different categories are:A - MotorcycleB - Invalid carriage (vehicle designed specifically for differently abled person)C - Light motor vehicleD - Medium passenger motor vehicleE - Medium goods vehicleF - Heavy passenger motor vehicleG - Heavy goods vehicleH - E-rickshawI - E-cartJ - any other category not covered above0123: Four digit unique number assigned to the holder of trade certificate (e.g. vehicle dealer) by registration authorityTC: Short for 'Trade Certificate'0001: Number of upto four digits to be assigned to one specific vehicle at a time by holder of trade certificate, as allowed by registration authorityCheck out BHPian comments for more insights and information.

Jajpur: Three labourers buried alive in soil mound collapse; stone quarry mishap kills one

JAJPUR: In a shocking incident, three labourers were buried alive while two others sustained injuries when a soil mound collapsed on them during laying of a water pipeline as part of drinking water project in Rahasa village under Alkund police limits of Jajpur district late on Wednesday night. In a separate incident, another labourer died in an illegal stone quarry, pegging the number of deaths at four within last 24 hours in the district. The stone quarry mishap took place at Dhankari under Dharmasala police limits on Thursday and till the reports last came in, two more labourers were still trapped and rescue operation was underway. In the soil mound collapse, the deceased were identified as Akhtar Ansari (29), Firoz Ansari (24), both from Bihar, while the third victim was Chidambar V Aiyah (44) from Tamil Nadu. The deceased and the injured were contractual labourers and working for a private company. As per reports, as many as eight contractual labourers from Bihar and Tamil Nadu were engaged in pipeline installation work of a mega drinking water project in Rahasa village being carried out by Koya Construction Limited, a private agency sub-contracted by L&T. While three labourers were engaged on the site, five others were engaged in digging the soil. However, the soil caved in during the work and three workers got buried. Later, all five were rescued and rushed to Jajpur district headquarters hospital. However, three of them succumbed during treatment. Two others, who sustained minor injuries, were discharged from the hospital after preliminary treatment. On being informed, Alkund police reached the spot, seized the bodies and sent them for postmortem. No FIR has been lodged. Since details are awaited and investigation is on, an unnatural death case has been registered, said IIC Prasant Kumar Dash. On the other hand, in the quarry mishap, the identity of the labourer who died is yet to be ascertained. Two others are trapped under debris at the quarry till reports last came in. Sources said, the labourers were engaged in quarry of black stone when the mishap took place. The black stone quarry is operated illegally by a mafia which is alleged to be a close aide of a political party leader. Meanwhile, Odisha Fire and Emergency Service officials and police launched a rescue operation to trace the missing labourers, police said. BJP MLA candidate Smruti Rekha Pahi rushed to the spot demanding stringent action against the quarry operator who was operating it illegally. She also threatened to take to the streets if compensation for the deceaseds family was not paid. RTI activist Sarbeswar Behuria alleged the black stone quarry is being operated illegally by a stone mafia, close aide of a legislator in connivance with the local revenue official, mining department and police. As per rule, there must be a display board showing lessee name, granted lease area with other details. But the illegal quarrying was being operated outside the lease area sans any display board or marked pillar installed by the revenue authorities. The illegal quarry was operational in connivance with local revenue officials, mining department and police, he further alleged. Jajpur police said efforts are on to retrieve the bodies of at least two more persons who are suspected to have been killed. One person was killed in the accident and his body was retrieved. Two more are feared dead and efforts are on to retrieve their bodies. Rescue work is on, said Jajpur SP, Vinit Agrawal, adding, an investigation has been launched.
