With this, the group has also become the first developer to deliver three projects -- County 107, Ivy County and Coco County -- within 12 months in Noida and the Greater Noida area, a region known for real estate litigation and homebuyers distress. Coco County (12.21 lakh sq ft) is located in Sector-10, Greater Noida (West), Ivy County (14.74 lakh sq ft) is located in Sector 75, Noida, and County 107 (14.78 lakh sq ft) is located in the posh Sector 107, Noida, the group said in a statement. The three projects together have delivered an area of over 41 lakh sq ft with 1,600 inventories, it said. Tragic Discovery: Businessman's Missing Son Found Deceased After Four-Day Search A Greater Noida-based businessman's minor son, who went missing on May 1, was found dead in the adjoining Bulandshahr district on Sunday, police officials said. The body of the class eight student was found along a canal in Bulandshahr, they said. Krishna Kumar Sharma, who runs 'Shiva da Dhaba' in Greater Noida, said a woman had come to call his 14-year-old son Kunal at his eatery on May 1, and he went along with her but never returned. ''Around 2.15 pm the woman came and took my son with her. When he did not return for a long time, we called up on his mobile phone but it was switched off,'' Sharma said in his complaint to the police. The police lodged an FIR under IPC Section 363 (kidnapping) against unidentified persons the same night and launched an investigation. A CCTV footage also surfaced on social media that purportedly showed the boy walking to a car and sitting inside it without any person physically forcing him to do so. Additional Police Commissioner (law and order) Shivhari Meena said multiple police teams have been put on the case, and CCTV footages are also being analysed. ''A fact emerged in the case that the boy had left (in a car) with a girl. The people who are under suspicion in the case are being called and questioned by the police. Along with this, other angles in the case are being examined,'' he said. ''Today, the boy's body was found along a canal in adjoining Bulandshahr district. Further legal proceedings are being carried. Some more important facts have come to light and the case would be unveiled soon,'' Meena added. In February, a 16-year-old son of a trader in Greater Noida was allegedly killed by his friends and his body was dumped in a canal. The body was recovered after 11 days of search operations. Vaibhav Singhal, the son of a trader in Bilaspur town, was strangled by two of his friends on January 30 allegedly over a personal dispute involving the girlfriend of one of the accused. The incident had sparked a major protest by local residents and closure of markets in the area for a couple of days, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also taking stock of the law and order situation.

Realty firm Godrej Properties plans to launch residential projects worth Rs 30,000 crore this fiscal across major cities to achieve 20 per cent growth in sales bookings amid strong demand, its executive chairperson Pirojsha Godrej said. In an interview with PTI, Pirojsha said, We have given a sales bookings guidance of Rs 27,000 crore for the current fiscal, a 20 per cent growth from high base in 2023-24. In the last fiscal, the company's sales bookings jumped 84 per cent to a record Rs 22,527 crore, from Rs 12,232 crore in the preceding year. This is the highest sales reported so far by any listed entity for FY'24. Pirojsha said the housing demand continues to be strong, especially for reputed brands. It (2023-24 fiscal) was a great year overall, whether you look at launches, sales, collection from customers, business development, deliveries of projects, cash flow and profit. We are really excited to see the kind of momentum in the business. He expected housing demand to sustain in the coming years. To tap this demand, Pirojsha said the company has lined up launches of multiple projects across Delhi-NCR, Mumbai-Metropolitan Region (MMR), Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad markets. We are planning to launch six projects in Delhi, Gurugram and Noida this fiscal, he said. According to an investors presentation, Godrej Properties plans to launch 21.9 million (219 lakh) square feet area this fiscal with an estimated sales booking value of Rs 30,000 crore. Not only launches and sales, Pirojsha said the company would continue acquiring land parcels for future development and also step up deliveries of projects. The significant levels of business development (land acquisition) we have executed in previous years at favourable terms allowed us to scale our bookings by 84 per cent to Rs 22,527 crore in 2023-24 and become the largest publicly listed real estate developer in India by sales, Pirojsha said. He noted that the housing sector has been strong over the past three years and exuded confidence that the sectoral tailwinds would continue over the next few years. On Friday, Godrej Properties reported its highest-ever quarterly profit as earnings jumped 14 per cent annually to Rs 471.26 crore in the March quarter. Its net profit stood at Rs 412.14 crore in the year-ago period. Total income rose to Rs 1,914.82 crore in the fourth quarter of FY24, from Rs 1,838.82 crore in the year-ago period. During the 2023-24 fiscal, the company's net profit increased to Rs 725.27 crore, from Rs 571.39 crore in the preceding year. Total income rose to Rs 4,334.22 crore in FY24, from Rs 3,039 crore in 2022-23. The company delivered 12.5 million square feet area in the last fiscal and is targeting to scale it up to 15 million square feet in 2024-25. Two sanitation workers die while cleaning Noida sewage shaft
NEW DELHI: Two sanitation workers, both hailing from West Bengal, died after allegedly inhaling poisonous fumes inside a sewage shaft at a house in Noida, police said on Saturday. The incident took place on Friday evening when Nooni Mandal and Tapan Mandal were working at the residence of an individual named Sumit Chawla in Sector 26. According to police officials, both workers hailed from Malda district in West Bengal and were residing in a slum in Noida Sector 9. An individual in Noida Sector 26 had hired two persons for cleaning of the septic tank at his home. Last night, while cleaning the tank, the duo became unconscious. They were taken to a hospital but did not survive, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Vidya Sagar Mishra said. Sharing details, another police officer said the two deceased had arrived at the house at 7 pm on Friday and had entered the sewage shaft area to clean it. A source said that both men were taken to the hospital after 11.15 pm and were already dead by the time the doctors checked on them. Police said they have inspected the incident site and have informed the families of the two deceased. Here, we may recall the an October 2023 order by the Supreme Court, issuing a slew of directives to both the Union and state governments, focussing on the effective implementation of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act of 2013. The inspection was carried out over complaints by some students who expressed dissatisfaction about cleanliness and standards of the food quality served to them by the canteen, a senior official said. Assistant Food Commissioner (II) Archana Dheeran said the inspection was carried out at the canteen of Aryan Residency of Lloyd College in the Knowledge Park area of Greater Noida. ''The inspection was carried out under the leadership of Chief Food Safety Officer Akshay Goyal and items were inspected by Food Safety Officer RP Gupta. During the inspection, cleanliness arrangements and other standard compliances were not found satisfactory for which notice was given to the college administration and the canteen operator,'' Dheeran said. During the visit, the officials also had a discussion with the students living in the hostel about their concerns, in which most of the students expressed dissatisfaction regarding the cleanliness and quality of food, she said. ''In this regard, a suggestion was made by the college administration after talking to the warden and canteen operator, that a committee of students would be formed for weekly feedback on the food quality,'' Dheeran said. The college administration also assured that very soon they will take necessary steps given this complaint, the assistant commissioner said. ''Samples of the biryani being served to the students (on Saturday) have been collected and sent to the government laboratory for testing of quality,'' Dheeran said. Further action will be taken upon receiving the investigation report, she added. On March 9, around 80 students living in the same hostel were hospitalised with food poisoning after they consumed 'puris' made of 'kuttu ka atta' (buckwheat flour) on account of Mahashivratri, according to police. After lab tests, the quality of buckwheat flour was found not to be of standard quality, a food safety official said.

Supreme Court to Review Acquittal of Surendra Koli in Nithari Killings Case The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea challenging Allahabad High Court's order acquitting Surendra Koli in the 2006 Nithari serial killings case. A bench of Justice BR Gavai, Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sandeep Mehta issued a notice on an appeal filed by one Pappu Lal, the father of one of the victims. Senior advocate Geeta Luthra and advocates Rupesh Kumar Sinha and Sataroop Das, appearing for Lal, submitted that the high court erred in its finding. The bench issued the notice and sought the response of Koli on Lal's plea and directed the registry to call for records from the trial court and the high court. In his plea, Lal challenged the high court's October 16 order and has arrayed only Koli as the party. Koli was the domestic help of Moninder Singh Pandher. In the case of Lal, Pandher was acquitted by the sessions court while Koli was awarded the death penalty on September 28, 2010. The case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On October 16, the high court pronounced verdicts on several appeals filed by Koli and Pandher, who were awarded the death penalty by the trial court. It acquitted the pair while holding that the prosecution failed to prove the guilt ''beyond reasonable doubt'' and that the investigation was ''botched up''. The verdict brought back memories of the chilling crime targeting children that came to light after skeletal remains were found behind a bungalow in Noida. Reversing the death sentence given to Koli in 12 cases and Pandher in two, the high court noted the prosecution had failed to prove the guilt of both the accused ''beyond reasonable doubt, on the settled parameters of a case based on circumstantial evidence'' and that the probe was ''nothing short of a betrayal of public trust by responsible agencies''. Pandher and Koli were charged with rape and murder and sentenced to death in the killings that horrified the nation with its details of sexual assault, brutal murder and hints of possible cannibalism. The high court had observed that prosecution was based on the confessional statement given by Koli to the Uttar Pradesh Police on December 29, 2006, but the procedure required to be followed for recording his disclosure, leading to the recovery of biological remains ie skulls, bones and skeleton etc, were given a ''complete go by''. It allowed multiple appeals filed by Koli and Pandher, who had challenged the death sentence awarded by a CBI court in Ghaziabad. The high court noted that the prosecution's stand kept changing from time to time as it initially attributed recoveries jointly on Pandher and Koli but, over time, the ''guilt was fastened exclusively'' upon Koli. In all, 19 cases had been lodged against Pandher and Koli in 2007. The CBI filed closure reports in three cases due to lack of evidence. In the remaining 16 cases, Koli was earlier acquitted in three and his death sentence in one was commuted to life. The sensational killings came to light with the discovery of the skeletal remains of eight children from a drain behind Pandher's house at Nithari in Noida, bordering the national capital, on December 29, 2006. Further digging and searches of drains in the area around Pandher's house led to more skeletal remains being found. Most of these remains were that of poor children and young women who had gone missing from the area. Within 10 days, the CBI took over the case and its search resulted in the recovery of more remains.

The incident occurred in Sector 26 of Police Station Sector 20 area. Upon receiving information, the police team reached the spot to investigate. The bodies were sent for post-mortem, and further actions are being taken by the police. The deceased, identified as Nooni Mandal and Tapan Mandal, originally from West Bengal, were residents of Sector 6 in Noida and worked as laborers. They were relatives, akin to brothers-in-law. Both had gone to work at a house identified as A-94 in Sector 26. While cleaning the septic tank, they suddenly stopped moving. They were found unconscious and immediately rushed to Kailash Hospital. Unfortunately, both laborers succumbed during treatment at the hospital. The local police were informed about the incident, and the police from Sector 20 station reached the spot. The family members were informed, and the bodies were sent for post-mortem. Noida's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vidya Sagar Mishra, stated that the two laborers were called to clean the safety tank of a house in Sector 26. Money laundering case filed against YouTuber Elvish Yadav and others by ED
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a money laundering investigation against YouTuber Siddharth Yadav, known as Elvish Yadav, and others. They are suspected of using snake venom as a recreational drug at parties hosted by Yadav. This move comes after the Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) district police in Uttar Pradesh filed a First Information Report (FIR) and a charge sheet last month. The ED is looking into the alleged generation of illegal funds and their use in organizing recreational events, including parties. Yadav and others involved in the case will be questioned during the investigation. The gang has been operational for about six years now and cheated gullible people by assuring them jobs in countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, police said. The police said they have seized 104 passports and 31 forged visa documents, 36 fake work contracts, among other items, from the possession of the duo, one of whom is a qualified software engineer. ''A team led by ACP 3 (Shavya Goyal) has arrested two accused. During inquiry it has come to light that the gang was making money from people on the pretext of sending them to foreign countries and getting them employment there,'' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Vidya Sagar Mishra said. ''They were using forged visa documents, Aadhaar cards, work contracts. 104 passports have been seized from them. These passports belonged to people whom they were duping. An FIR was lodged against them in Delhi in the past and we are gathering more details about it,'' Mishra told reporters. Ishaq Yunus alias Robin alias Jitendra (30), and Rohit Oberoi (27) were nabbed near Hoshiarpur on Friday by officials of Sector 49 police station team on the basis of a tip-off, police said. During interrogation, it was revealed that Jitendra is the leader of the gang and this work was being carried out by him for the last six years, a police spokesperson said. ''This gang misleads youth with job offers in foreign countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia etc. For this work, the accused takes Rs 80,000- Rs 90,000 from a candidate, and if they find any shortcoming in official papers, they would increase the rate and demand more money from them to fix the issue,'' the official said. The gang promoted its fake consultancy firm using various social media platforms and when a victim contacts them after seeing this advertisement, they are told that if they bring more candidates, their charge would be reduced, the official said. ''After this, in the name of getting jobs abroad, they extort money from the unemployed persons by showing them fake visas and company contracts, they are not given jobs anywhere. As soon as the money was collected, they closed the office and would run away,'' the spokesperson said. The gang has carried out such incidents in the past in Delhi, Haryana and other parts of Uttar Pradesh also, the police said. An FIR has been lodged against the accused, who were produced in a local court which has sent them to jail, the police added.

Himalayan 450 & 411 go on a trip: KTM 390 ADV owner shares observations
BHPian Jaggu recently shared this with other enthusiasts. So after a long wait, I finally got my hands on the New Himalayan Sherpa over the weekend. Thanks to ex-mod Khan_Sultan who has picked up one, so along with his Gen 1 Himalayan we did a ride of Uttarakhand hills. Starting from Noida > Abbott Mount > Munsiyari > Almora > Noida. This gave a good mix of all terrains and roads that one would encounter during ownership. These are my notes and the easiest comparison would be with the 390 Adv I own, comparing it to the GSA 1200 (my other bike) would be unfair I guess.Chassis and handlingThis is one area where the bike has really trumped the cards, compared to the old bike, the new Sherpa is leagues apart. Though the bike may feel top-heavy (which it is), it is just a brilliant handler. Almost as nimble as the KTM, but more mature Vs the hooligan nature of the KTM. Personally, I prefer this, slightly heavier feel which gives it a big bike feel. Yes, it will need a little more effort during prolonged curve carving but what a bike! I would give 8.5/10 for this. Even in city use the handling is very friendly as long as you are moving. The larger size of the bike helps with longer visibility and respect from other fellow commuters.SuspensionAgain one of the good things, it's sprung on the stiffer side but kind of takes on any kind of terrain without a fuzz. The bike was running slightly higher pressure since Khan had done a tubeless conversion and wanted to put some buffer during the testing phase. Still, it was pretty good, though at higher highway speeds bike did float a bit, just like the KTM's. Crosswinds were high, so I really can't blame the bike, plus higher pressure. All day sitting at 100-120 Kmph should be a breeze for this suspension.BrakesLook Ma I finally have brakes! We were swapping bikes and moving from new to old Himalayan is outright scary. The new one brakes on the dot, very precise. Add rear brakes and it can be quite grabby also for those emergency stops. Fortunately, we did not have any panic brake situations, but am sure they will work just fine. Regarding the feel of the brakes I would rate the New Himalayan better than the KTM Adv 390.Engine & GearboxThis is one major upgrade, but honestly apart from the power I was not really impressed. The said bike has upgrades done that include 1) Fuel X piggy back 2) exhaust expansion box delete on stock end can and 3) free flow air filter. These mods are 100% recommended! Stock map (at setting 3) bike feels vibe like hell, left pegs vibrate more than the right, so it is not even vibed lol. Even a 20-30 kms on the stock map was downright irritating on the plains. Move the setting to 8 and the bike just transforms, not only does the initial response improve by two fold, but the vibes reduce to a very very acceptable level. I think it is the new BS6 norms that are the culprit here. If they sort this, the engine would be a lovely one. Mind you, it is not a high-revving 12k rpm motor like KTM. Just let the revs goto about 6-7 k RPM and work through that smooth gearbox for a fun-filled ride. People who are used to Gen 1 Himalayan gearbox would take some good time to get used to the nature of the new 6-speed box. One has to really work it and keep the engine in the right revs to have some good pace.Side standYes, this needs a special mention under the flops! Thanks to the design of the central stand and placement, the side stand is weirdly bent. It looks cool, but the bike ends up being too low on the side. Add the top-heavy nature, and the bike is a real pain in the arsu, rather than legs and hands to lift up. If there is a slight incline to the left, then you are done! with some luggage on top, well you can dial a friend for help. One of the worst designs one can have on a touring bike. Khan is contemplating removing the central stand and designing a longer more upright side stand, which is the level of pain. For me being used to the big fat cow, could manage. But trust me if you are of small build and for fellow lady riders, this could be a real downer while making the purchase decision.Rider fittingRoyal Enfield really needs to learn here. This bike has a riser fitted so the handlebars were kinda sorted. But hello if you need to adjust the switch gear to sync up with new handlebar position or even lever positions, you can't! The switch gear has a small plastic locator stub, that goes into a corresponding hole at the bar end. Smart Alecs in RE never thought that people actually need to adjust levers and switch gears for comfort and safety. Yes, one can file off the plastic stub and then tighten the switch console back while adding some 3M tape, but how lame can this be??!! Next is the gear lever, the lever end is almost 1/4 inch taller than foot pegs (with rubber), with riding boots one has to lift legs and kick the lever down More impressive is the way in which the lever is attached to the shifter rod. The adjustment is as old school as it can be, one has to remove the whole pedal off the splines and reinsert it. Which is fine, but once you remove the bolt the lever just refuses to come out. You will need a lever or thick screwdriver to be shown inside the clamp side and spread the hole to get it off. We did not have this, so had to put back the bolt and ride on with that awkwardly positioned lever. Compared to this the old Himalayan has a nice adjustable link which can be used to set the lever position by undoing the bolt with an open 10 mm spanner! Seats though they are firm (my liking), are not comfortable over long rides. Not even as comfy as the bare bench 390 adv. The reason being 1) the seat is tilted and one will land up sliding down. 2) The bigger issue, the rear part of the front seat which is wide and where your bum should be... the scoop of the plastic base pokes the bum hard exactly there. The cushion just doesn't have any place to flex and the plastic eventually leaves its mark on your bum. This can be fixed by a good seat guy, and Khan is planning for something.Overall verdictI loved it minus the engine! but what Khan has done has kinda made it good. This can be a good one-bike solution for 200-400km/day touring and city use. I would not dare say, it can compete with 800 to 1200 cc bikes, that would be just Khayali pulao (wishful thinking), but is a good ead economical alternative... if you don't want to spend a fortune, procuring even preowned big bikes that cost more. Is it a KTM Adv killer? Not really, coz the character is very different. This bike may not really be to the liking of younger or a real fast rider if you ask me. KTM is much more refined and polished overall and a hoot to ride. Will I trade my KTM Adv 390 for this? Well yes if someone offers a flat exchange to my bike with this. But I will definitely get those tweaks copied from Khan's bike. PS: A big thanks to Khan_Sultan for letting me ride this beauty and his old Himalayan! Love you bro and this was yet another awesome ride. Classic example of side stand, the old Himalayan wouldn't park proper at this incline if it's facing the other way around like Sherpa. Which is the way it should be. Where as Sherpa nicely sitting down even with raised road bank on that side. Also to lock the steering to opp side to lift the bike off, you will need some serious muscle thanks to the front and top heaviness of the bike. New Delhi: A day after more nearly 200 schools received hoax bomb emails, educational institutions in the city witnessed a slightly lower attendance, even as principals revisited evacuation plans for such emergencies in the future.Around 200 schools in Delhi-NCR Wednesday morning received a hoax bomb threat via email which led to widespread panic among parents and students, prompting authorities to suspend classes and ask parents to pick their wards from the school. Many schools on Thursday reopened to normalcy but attendance has taken a hit even in schools where the threat was not received, principals of some schools told PTI. Jyoti Arora, principal of Mount Abu School, said she revisited the school's evacuation plan on each floor and also wrote to disaster management authorities to conduct mock drills and awareness activities for them. She said that there was slightly more absenteeism than usual on Thursday. I wrote an email to parents telling them to counsel their children and in case they need help from school counsellors, they are also available. I also requested parents to assess their reaction in case of such situations, Arora said. She said some parents were pushing the gates and some were insisting on taking their children out of turn. I told them, 'I have 2,700 children to take care of', she told PTI. Even in that situation, Arora said she asked teachers to hand the children over after properly checking the IDs of parents, taking their signatures. Children were also asked to confirm the identities of their parents, she said. Sudha Acharya, principal of ITL Public School in Dwarka, said parents were still scarred and anxious about the safety of their children in schools. Our attendance today has dropped to 85 per cent from an average of about 95 to 97 per cent daily. Certainly parents are still scarred and anxious about the safety of their children. Yesterday itself we had ensured parents that there is nothing to worry about. We didn't get anything on our official email ID, Acharya said. Acharya, who is also the head of the National Progressive Schools Conference, a body of 250 private schools, said her counterparts in other institutions have also said the attendance is on the lower side. For instance, in nursery and KG classes, the attendance is around 80 per cent since there is some fear among parents. But the situation is normal, she added. NEW DELHI: As many as 131 schools in Delhi, five in Gurugram and three in Noida and Greater Noida were forced to evacuate their students on Wednesday morning after receiving emails that mentioned explosives being planted on school premises. Within a few minutes, the police in the national capital and its surrounding areas swung into action even as they kept receiving PCR calls from schools, one after another. Fire brigades were alerted and cops from almost every police station in the city began rushing to the schools in need. Simultaneously several teams of bomb disposal squads were deployed which launched search operations. School authorities informed the parents about the development that gripped the city residents in panic and parents rushed out to know the well-being of their wards. Before mounting the search operation for explosives, the police personnel first cordoned off the entire compound of every school. The children were handed over to their parents while the senior class students were allowed to go home. For several hours, the police along with bomb disposal squads kept scanning the schools, but couldnt find anything. By 11 am, the cops were sure enough to announce that the threats were a hoax. Security personnel inspect a classroom at DPS in Noida Some Delhi schools received emails about bomb threats. Delhi Police conducted thorough checks of all these schools as per protocol. Nothing objectionable was found. These calls seem to be a hoax. We request the public not to panic and maintain peace, a senior police officer said. ''Nothing objectionable'' was found during searches by authorities which later declared it a hoax. Officials said that the initial probe suspected a ''deeper conspiracy'' by a terror group during the Lok Sabha elections, adding that there is suspicion that the threat mail was sent by an ISIS module. The Delhi Police's anti-terror unit special cell has traced the domain of emails to Russia and it is suspected to have been formed with the help of the dark web - an encrypted online content that allows individuals to hide their identity and location from others. The National Investigation Agency may also take up the probe since the role of a terror group is suspected and the ''conspiracy'' angle may lead to a pan-India investigation, an official said. Law enforcement authorities went into a tizzy as police and fire services started receiving a flurry of calls from schools at 6 am on Wednesday. Delhi Public School (Mathura Road), DPS (Saket), Sanskriti School, Amity School (Saket), DAV (Model Town), DPS (Dwarka) and St. Mary School (Mayur Vihar) were among the education institutions that received the threat email on Wednesday. A senior Noida Police official told PTI that the email threat was received in seven schools in the satellite city. It was only an hour or so since parents had dropped off their children when they received messages from the school authorities informing them about an e-mail threatening the safety and security of the students. Parents rushed to pick up their children and school authorities scampered to bring the students to safety, moving them outside the buildings, while police personnel with sniffer dogs sanitised the premises. The officer said that the email also contained ''aayate (verses) of the holy Quran''. A case has been registered under relevant sections of law for offences like conspiracy and threat by the Special Cell and a dedicated team formed to conduct the investigation, an official said. Noida resident Monika Arora, whose son studies in Class 12 in DPS-Noida, said, ''My son had left for his extra classes at 6:30 am. Around 8 am, we received a message about a threat e-mail. ''The school authorities asked the parents whose children travel by private taxis to get them picked while those who come in school buses were being sent back.'' Rukesh Kumar, whose daughters study in two different schools in east Delhi, said students were evacuated by teachers. ''Some students climbed up trees saying they would be saved if there was an explosion. Some tried to hide in safe places,'' Kumar said. Several schools said they were able to carry out a swift evacuation of the students and staff, but dealing with the parents was a challenge. ''In view of the current situation wherein bomb threats were received by a few schools of Delhi in the early hours of the morning of 01.05.2024, it is advised that School Administrators/Managers /Heads of Government/Government Aided and Unaided Recognised Schools under the Directorate of Education, GNCT Delhi should ensure that emails/messages received on official email id of the school at any time of the day (before, during or after school hours) are checked timely,'' read the advisory issued by the Directorate of Education. Ansari is far from alone. Many millions of migrant workers across India face a similar dilemma as voting takes place in the world's biggest election, with nearly 1 billion people eligible to vote until June 1. Results are due by June 4, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi predicted to win a rare third term. For those like Ansari, a road building labourer from Jharkhand state earning 600 rupees ($7) a day in the satellite city of Noida, the costs of voting are high - from leave without pay, threats of wage theft and job loss to lofty travel expenses, including the expected gifts for family members. If I could get free (train) tickets and paid leave, I would go. But since that is not happening, I will stay and hope for the best, said Ansari, 37. We are here out of compulsion. It is just for work ... because we could not find anything back home, he said, gesturing to about 30 of his fellow migrant labourers, who mostly hail from the impoverished eastern states of Jharkhand and neighbouring Bihar. All the men echoed Ansari, saying they would not go back to cast their votes this month as it would mean losing at least 4,000 rupees ($48) in two days' lost wages and travel costs. In Noida, they can earn as much as 24,000 rupees in a month. The Thomson Reuters Foundation spoke to another two dozen migrant workers in and around New Delhi, with only four saying they would go back to their home town to vote. Of those four, three said their towns were relatively close so it would only cost them a day's wage and a few hours' of travel time. While the number of internal migrants in India has not been updated in official figures for more than 10 years, experts say they could make up as much as 40% of the electorate. According to the latest available figures, albeit from 2011, India's then population of 1.21 billion people included 456 million internal migrants. Their number has likely increased by another 150 million, said S. Irudaya Rajan, chairman of the International Institute of Migration and Development think tank. Migrants are still invisible in our country's policies and programmes, Rajan said. He observed that neither the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor its rivals had debated or discussed the COVID-19 migrants' crisis in their campaigns or rallies. An estimated 100 million migrants were among the worst hit by a strict lockdown in early 2020, which led to an exodus from cities. Many workers walked home, their adversity unfolding live on television and making global headlines. It can't be a memory lapse. This happened only four years ago, said Rajan. This just indicates that nobody is bothered about them. RURAL DISTRESS Rajan described most migrant workers as short-term, seasonal, distressed, illiterate and informal, making it difficult for them to organise and fight for their rights. He warned that without their say in elections, it could exacerbate their exploitation, and limit their bargaining power as they are left out of key decision making. The problem is that migrants are not treated as a vote bank despite their great contributions to the economy ... This needs to be fixed, he said, urging the creation of a ministry for migrant affairs. Internal migration is bound to intensify in the world's most populous nation as economic slowdown hits rural India, home to 60% of its 1.4 billion people, according to migration and economic experts. Many, especially those under 35, flock to the cities to take whatever jobs they can - becoming labourers, drivers or helpers in shops and homes - to tap into the country's spectacular economic growth and the prosperity of its urban areas. Benoy Peter, the executive director of the Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development in the coastal state of Kerala, warned that people engaged in farm-based jobs could face rising pressure from climate change, which hurts harvests and fuels debt, forcing them to migrate. He said that if there were enough well-paying jobs at home, most would not opt o be treated as second-class citizens in the urban centres of India. People can live with dignity, exercise their agency if they have decent-paying jobs at their native places. But that is going to be a remote dream, he said. In the last general election in 2019, more than 300 million people did not vote - migrant workers likely made up a huge proportion of those, according to government data. In the first and largest phase of this year's general election, voter turnout dipped by nearly four percentage points compared to 2019, according to data. M. All the migrant workers said it was neither feasible to drop everything and go home to vote, nor possible to change their voting constituency to their place of work since most of them hop from place to place doing temporary jobs.
