Young and old proxy players in legacy battles

Of all the 80 Lok Sabha seats of Uttar Pradesh, two, Kaiserganj and Amethi, have a certain kind of invidiousness which the rest of the state detests or delights depending on the degree of a patronising attention-seeker. On the edge of some wildlife sanctuaries of repute, Kaiserganj offers a truly wild side to its political existence: No one remembers when it turned into Brij Bhushan Sharan Singhs saffron chevron from Samjawadi stalwart Beni Prasad Vermas socialist stripes. So much so that the former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief has now grappled his way successfully to let his 33-year-old son rule Kaiserganj by getting him BJP nomination. Move over to redoubtable Amethi. The amazing fiefdom of Congress first family. Kishori Lal Sharma, who? The 63-year-old loyalist is originally from Punjabs Ludhiana and has been with the family for 40-odd years to challenge the aggression and vanity of the sitting BJP MP. Sharma, sources say, is excellent in his management skills, and has been representing Sonia Gandhi first in Amethi and then in Rae Bareli. Curiously, Kaiserganj and Amethi are now melded in a battle of legacies on the one hand young Karan Bhushan Sharan Singh is out to retain his fathers seat, and on the other an experienced caregiver is brought to re-assert the power of the Gandhis. Brij Bhushan, despite being snubbed by the party following his deeds as WFI chairman, has a tinge of condescension in his voice while claiming that Karans ticket was apparent, owing to the clout he enjoys; it is Gods gift to him and his clan. Karan is not the only inheritor of political legacy of Brijbhushan, who has been a six-time MP from Kaiserganj, Balrampur and Gonda. His elder son Prateek Bhushan is BJP MLA from Gonda. However, the younger scion has an added attribute inherited from father. Besides managing his fathers political affairs in Kaiserganj, he is also an amateur wrestler and is helming the UP Wrestling Federation since February this year. A law graduate, he has an Australian diploma in business management. An ace shooter of national repute, Karan is the chairman of a cooperative bank at Nawabganj in Gonda. A father of two children, he has no criminal history, with wife Neha managing the educational institutions owned by the family. In Amethi, Sharma is humbled by the party gesture. He is believed to be well aware of the political temperament of Amethi and Rae Bareli. He had his association with the twin Gandhi bastions since 1983 when late Rajiv Gandhi took him along to Amethi after the death of Sanjay Gandhi, as part of Rajivs initiative to set up a youth brigade to monitor development works in his constituency. Rajiv won from Amethi four times 1981, 1984, 1989 and posthumously in 1991. Sharma managed all his elections since 1984. Sharmas ties with the Gandhis grew stronger after Rajiv passed away. He continued to nurture Rae Bareli and Amethi on their behalf besides managing elections of the likes of Sheila Kaul and Captain Satish Sharma. Beyond Rae Bareli and Amethi, Sharma was once appointed the partys Bihar in-charge. He has been in the All India Congress Committee and Punjab Congress Committee. It is after 25 years that no Gandhi is in the fray from Amethi. The reason for Sharma replacing Rahul Gandhi in Amethi seems to be an in-house survey of the Congress indicating smooth sailing for Rahul in Rae Bareli and only 50 per cent chances of victory in Amethi. Sharma was blamed largely for the 2019 Amethi loss, but Sonia and Priyanka came to his rescue. Holding the party baton, the only task of KL Sharma is conducting poll rallies by the Gandhis he has been promised three as he believes that their presence would make all the difference for him in Amethi.

Congress KL Sharma to Contest against BJP's Smriti Irani in Amethi

The Congress party has revealed its contenders for the crucial Amethi and Raebareli seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. Kishori Lal Sharma, a trusted aide of the Gandhi family, will stand from Amethi, while Rahul Gandhi will contest from Raebareli. Sharma, with over four decades of allegiance to the Congress, steps into the political fray alongside a powerful opponent, BJP's Smriti Irani, in Amethi. This move signifies the Congress's resolve to reclaim its traditional strongholds. A Veteran Congress Figure: Kishori Lal Sharma Originally from Ludhiana, Punjab, Kishori Lal Sharma joined forces with the Congress in 1983, aligning with Rajiv Gandhi. Following Rajiv Gandhi's demise in 1991, Sharma's association with the Gandhi family deepened. He played a pivotal role in managing affairs in Amethi and Raebareli, especially during the absence of the Gandhis. Sharma's Influence in Amethi and Raebareli Sharma's journey in Amethi began in the 1990s when the Gandhi family opted out of electoral politics. He actively campaigned for Congress candidates during this period. Notably, Sharma was instrumental in Sonia Gandhi's electoral debut from Amethi in 1999. After Sonia Gandhi shifted her focus to Raebareli, Sharma followed suit, continuing his support in her electoral endeavors. With Rahul Gandhi's entry into politics, Sharma expanded his responsibilities to manage both constituencies. Beyond Amethi and Raebareli, Sharma's involvement in Congress activities in Bihar and Punjab showcases his commitment to the party's cause. 45 Royal Families Extend Support to PM Modi Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections Trinamool Congress Accuses Congress Leader of Promoting BJP Agenda Traditional Congress Strongholds Amethi and Raebareli have long been bastions of the Gandhi family. However, in the 2019 elections, Rahul Gandhi faced defeat in Amethi against Smriti Irani, signaling a shift in dynamics. Election Dynamics The upcoming elections on May 20 hold immense significance for both Congress and BJP. Sharma's nomination in Amethi and Rahul Gandhi's candidacy in Raebareli underscore Congress's determination to regain lost ground. Kishori Lal Sharma gears up to file his nomination from Amethi, ready to challenge BJP's Smriti Irani in what promises to be a closely watched electoral battle. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi seeks to reclaim the family stronghold of Raebareli, setting the stage for a high-stakes electoral showdown.

Clash of Ideologies: Electoral Battle Heats Up in Ludhiana

Clash of Ideologies: Electoral Battle Heats Up in Ludhiana Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Tuesday dubbed his electoral contest with the BJP nominee from the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat as a battle between 'vafadaari' (loyalty) and 'gaddari' (betrayal). The Congress has fielded Warring from the Ludhiana parliamentary constituency, which is currently held by three-time MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, who joined the BJP recently after quitting the grand old party. Responding to Bittu's charge that the Congress brought its candidate from Gidderbaha, Warring said such a statement shows that the BJP nominee was ''unnerved''. Warring, who is the MLA from Gidderbaha seat in Muktsar district, said he can fight the elections from anywhere. ''Bittu, who was made MP thrice, betrayed the Congress. By defeating him, the party wants to give a message that such cheaters have no place anywhere,'' said Warring. ''It is a fight between 'vafadaari' and 'gaddari'. It is a fight between a trustworthy person and a deceiver. My heart says the truth and trust will be victorious,'' said Warring, who was flanked by senior party leader Partap Singh Bajwa. Bittu had remained the MP from the Ludhiana seat twice. Earlier, he had remained the MP from the Anandpur Sahib seat. Bajwa said that he would take a house on rent in Ludhiana to campaign for Warring. He said the Punjab Congress as well as the people of Ludhiana will teach Bittu a lesson in the coming polls. ''I am going to camp in Ludhiana to take on this traitor (Bittu). He had challenged me to contest from Ludhiana. Now, I will be in Ludhiana to ensure the victory of Raja Warring,'' he added. Bajwa also denied the possibility of a post-election alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. The AAP will be nowhere in the scene after the Lok Sabha elections, the Qadian MLA claimed. ''Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant (Mann) did exactly the opposite of what he promised to the people of Punjab. He is neither an honest nor sincere to lead Punjab,'' he alleged. Bajwa said Mann claims that Sangrur is the capital of the AAP. ''The voters of Sangrur do not take time to show the mirror to those who dupe them. Therefore, this time as well they will show the mirror to the AAP and support Sukhpal Singh Khaira, the Congress candidate from the home district of Punjab CM,'' he said. When asked about his wife Amrita Warring's objectionable remarks during poll campaigning, Punjab Congress chief Warring said she has tendered an apology. Warring's wife Amrita Warring came under attack from the rival parties for allegedly equating the Congress poll symbol with the hand shown in the popular painting of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.
