IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad edge Rajasthan Royals in one-run thriller

CHENNAI: Bhuvaneshwar Kumar's brilliant final over and some excellent death bowling from Sunrisers Hyderabad took them over the line against Rajasthan Royals. The partnership of 134 runs between Riyan Parag and Yashaswi Jaiswal was not enough for the visitors, as Hyderabad won by one run. Bhuvaneshwar took two wickets in his first over as Impact Substitute Jos Buttler and captain Sanju Samson went back without scoring a run. That did not stop Jaiswal and Parag, as both youngsters adopted an aggressive approach against Hyderabad bowlers to add 134 runs in a partnership. Jaiswal smashed his half-century off 30 balls, while Parag achieved the milestone off 31 balls. Natarajan broke the partnership with the wicket of Jaiswal to give Hyderabad a sniff and the hosts did not look back. Rajasthan lost Parag, Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel in quick succession. With 20 runs required off the last two overs, Cummins bowled the penultimate over and gave away seven runs while taking the wicket of Jurel. Hyderabad had to pay the price for a slow over rate with only four fielders outside the ring. Bhuvaneshwar bowled tidy lines and only gave away one boundary in the final over. With two runs required off the final ball, he trapped Powell in front to give Hyderabad a win. Earlier, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Sunrisers captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first, with Marco Jansen coming into the playing XI. The dynamic duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head tried to give a good start to the hosts, but Sharma struggled to get going in the powerplay. Eventually, after a few swings and misses, Avesh Khan finally sent the youngster packing for 12 in his first over of the day. Anmolpreet Singh, who replaced Sharma, did not last long, as Sandeep Sharma also took the wicket with his first ball. From 37/2 at the end of the powerplay, Hyderabad needed a solid partnership and Head found the perfect partner in Nitish Kumar Reddy, batting at four. The Australian batter survived a close LBW call and took that opportunity to launch the counterattack, as 18 runs came from Yuzvendra Chahal's second over. The partnership between Head and Reddy was a mix of caution and attacking style. The duo particularly went after Chahal, as the spinner gave away 62 runs in his four overs.Head completed his fourth half-century of the season off 37 balls, while Reddy completed his 50 off 30 balls. Head departed trying to be ultra-aggressive, but the introduction of Heinrich Klaasen only helped the Sunrisers cause. The South African hit two back-to-back sixes off Chahal. Trent Boult was not as effective for Rajasthan as they would have wanted and he gave away 33 runs in four overs. Klaasen kept his calm even in the final over bowled by Sandeep Sharma, who had given away just 16 runs in his three overs. Hyderabad took 15 runs in the final over of the innings to score 201 for three in 20 overs. For Rajasthan, Avesh took three wickets, while Sandeep took one. Brief scores: SRH 201/3 in 20 overs (Nitish Kumar Reddy 76 n.o, Travis Head 42; Avesh Khan 2/39) beat Rajasthan Royals 200/7 in 20 overs (Riyan Parag 77, Yashasvi Jaiswal 67; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/41)

Sunrisers Hyderabad Snatch Thrilling 1-Run Victory Over Rajasthan Royals Sunrisers Hyderbad pulled off a nervy one-run win over Rajasthan Royals in their Indian Premier League match here on Thursday. In reply, Riyan Parag (77) and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (67) stitched a 133-run stand after Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked two wickets in the first over. However, Head and Reddy scored 96 runs off 57 deliveries to resurrect SRH''s innings while Heinrich Klaasen (42 not out of 19) provided the final flurry. Only 196 Odia NRIs enrol to vote in these elections

BHUBANESWAR: A significant percentage of Odia population living abroad may not vote this time too. Because, the logistics for doing so still does not work out for them. Only 196 Odias living in other countries have enrolled as overseas/NRI voters for this Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state. Gender wise, 156 of them are male and 40 female. According to the World Odisha Society (WOS), which is the highest and apex organisation of the Odia diaspora worldwide, there are over a million Odias residing in countries outside India. And an average of 60 per cent of this population is eligible to vote. Official reports from the chief electoral officer state that the overseas/NRI electors had not participated in the 2019 and 2014 elections in Odisha. As per the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines, an overseas elector is not issued an EPIC and they are allowed to vote in person at the polling station on production of their original passport. This, members of the Odia diaspora said, is the biggest impediment for Odias living abroad. A native of Sambalpur Sudhashree Das, who currently resides in Dubai, said the norms of physical voting have been the biggest impediment for Odias living abroad. The lack of provisions for remote or overseas voting in the states electoral system is the roadblock. Odisha, like many other states, does not have a mechanism in place for expatriates to cast their votes from abroad. This means that unless we are physically present during the voting period, we cannot vote, she explained. An overseas voter from Bhubaneswar, Madhumita Sahoo, who resides in London, said only a limited number of people whose travel plans to Odisha coincide with the voting period can enrol to vote. Otherwise, travelling back to your state just to vote is an expensive affair, she said. CEO officials said since most of the Odias living abroad renounce Indian citizenship, they cannot be forced to vote. As per the existing provisions, after enrolling, they can show their passports at polling booths to vote, said a higher official. Although in 2020, the ECI proposed to the Law Ministry to extend the facility of postal ballots to eligible NRIs by amending the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, Government of India did not take a call on it.

He emphasised that all children should get opportunities to explore their talents as per their interests. ''I have been saying this for a long time. As soon as a child is born, people decide that he will become a doctor, an engineer, and so on. No one pays attention to what the child wants. Let them create their own path,'' Vice President Dhankhar, who was addressing students of a private school here, said. He termed education as the greatest wealth and said that special attention has been given to education in the Constitution. According to an official statement, the vice president said, ''What is the greatest wealth? The greatest wealth is knowledge. And, what is the greatest gift? Education.'' Dhankhar also recalled his time as a student at Sainik School, Chittorgarh, and said, ''My real birth took place in Sainik School, Chittorgarh.'' He also discussed India's growing economic potential. ''In 1991, India's economy was equal to cities like London and Paris but today India is the fifth largest economy in the world,'' the vice president said. He was speaking at the inauguration programme of The Kulish School, which has been established in memory of Karpoor Chand Kulish, the founder of Hindi-newspaper daily Rajasthan Patrika. Captive-bred Corals Enrich Europe's Largest Reef, Inspiring Scientific Optimism

Captive-bred Corals Enrich Europe's Largest Reef, Inspiring Scientific Optimism Just like the animals on Noah's Ark, the corals arrived in a pair. On Monday, divers with gloved hands gently nestled the self-bred corals from the World Coral Conservatory project among their cousins in Europe's largest coral reef at the Burgers' Zoo in the Netherlands. This is the first project where we started to keep these corals with a known origin. As we know exactly where they're coming from, they have the potential to be placed back into the wild. So it is very important to keep these corals, as it's going not very well in the wild, Nienke Klerks, a biologist at the Royal Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem, told The Associated Press. It's among several projects worldwide seeking to address the decline of coral reef populations, which are suffering from bleaching caused by rising sea temperatures. Corals are central to marine ecosystems, and while these projects won't stem the tide of damage from human-caused climate change, they are seen as part of broader solutions. The World Coral Conservatory hopes to create a bank of corals in aquariums across Europe that could be used to repopulate wild coral reefs if they succumb to the stress of climate change or pollution. Along with two zoos in France and the originator of the project the Monaco Scientific Center the zoo in the east of the Netherlands took in more than a dozen coral fragments from off the coast of Seychelles in east Africa. The Dutch zoo has been propagating the corals since 2022, allowing them to grow in a highly regulated environment before they were large enough to join the rest of the reef. We test it behind the scenes what works for these corals. In that way, we know where to place them and how to keep them, zookeeper Pascal Kik said. Each diver held up a coral one that resembled a large mushroom, the other a decorative cookie to be photographed by reporters before placing them on a ledge near the centre of the 8-million-litre tank. Few of the other corals at the zoo come from the wild. They are either shared by other zoos or turned over by Dutch customs officers after being confiscated. Coral poaching is a major threat to coral reefs in parts of Asia. That would make it difficult to return the corals to the wild. But the team knows exactly where their 14 corals came from, making it more likely they could be successfully reintroduced if needed. Corals area keystone marine species, according to Mark Eakin, executive secretary for the International Coral Reef Society. Eakin, retired coral monitoring chief at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says that around 25 per cent of marine animals spend some part of their lives dependent on coral reefs. That makes projects such as the one in Arnhem all the more important to pursue, he said. We are in a situation where we really need to be taking any possible action we can, Eakin told AP. Earlier in April, scientists from the NOAA and International Coral Reef Initiative said that coral reefs around the world are experiencing global bleaching for the fourth time. Bleaching occurs when coral under stress expels the algae that gives them their vibrant colours. The algae is also a coral's food source, and if the bleaching lasts for too long or is too severe, the coral could die. In the world's largest coral reef ecosystem, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, bleaching affected 90 per cent of the coral assessed in 2022. The Florida Coral Reef, the third-largest, experienced significant bleaching last year. Terry Hughes of Australia's James Cook University, an expert on the Great Barrier Reef, argues that the world needs faster, bolder efforts to stop the damage from climate change, instead of small-scale restoration projects like this one. You can't replace a magnificent ecosystem with an aquarium, he said. Others say every little bit helps. Coral reefs would be one of the first systems to totally collapse due to climate change,'' said Ronald Osinga, a marine biologist who specializes in corals at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. It's sad that it has to be like this, said Osinga, who is not involved in the Dutch zoo initiative. But projects like this are a good backup plan.
