Here's How RCB Can Qualify for IPL Playoffs

Hyderabad: After a bad start in this IPL season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) makes a comeback in this tournament with a win against Gujarat Titans (GT). They defeated GT by 4 wickets. RCB is placed in the 7th position in the points table after their win with 4 wins in 11 matches and run rate of -0.049. Royal Challengers have 3 more games to play and they have a chance to qualify for the playoffs if they win their remaining three matches which will take them to 14 points and they also need the help of other teams. For RCB to qualify, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) with 12 points each should not win more than 1 match of their remaining 4 matches. Punjab Kings with 8 points should not win more than 2 matches in their remaining 4 matches. CSK and DC with 10 points each should not win more than 2 matches. KKR and RR should win all their remaining matches. If this plays out well, 6 teams will have 14 points where Net run rate will play a crucial role and for this RCB should win all their matches by a huge margin. RCB will play Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings in their remaining three matches.

IPL: SRH eye consistency in must-win clash against frail MI

Mumbai: A confident Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to produce a dominant show against a frail Mumbai Indians outfit and move up in the Indian Premier League points table when the two teams clash here on Monday. Placed fourth in the IPL points table with 12 points in 10 matches with six wins and four losses, SRH will be desperate to produce an all-round show and make improvements especially in their bowling department. The Pat Cummins-led side is in the midst of an intense battle between multiple teams who are bidding for spots in the final four, with Rajasthan Royals (16 points), Kolkata Knight Riders (14 points) and Lucknow Super Giants (12 points) placed above SRH. Chennai Super Kings (5th with 10 points) and a resurgent Delhi Capitals (6th with 10 points) are breathing down SRH's neck, a scenario that would force the 2016 winners to shrug off any rust and get ready for an intense mid-table battle. If a two-paced pitch at the Wankhede Stadium for the previous clash against KKR was an aberration, the free-flowing SRH batters would look to make merry and pile up a huge score as they have done several times this year. The pitches here generally are batting-friendly and short boundary lengths at this venue make scores in excess of 200 a norm, but the MI-KKR contest played out on a sluggish surface last Friday challenged the batters to dig deep. SRH would be high on confidence having pipped the table-toppers RR by just one run in their previous outing, a game in which their bowlers pulled off a thrilling win. Travis Head (396 runs), Abhishek Sharma (315) and Heinrich Klaasen (337) remain the enforcers in SRH's batting but South African Aiden Markram would be keen to make a big score of his own, having had a mixed run so far. Nitish Kumar Reddy (219 runs) has emerged as one of the most promising players for SRH in last few games which takes a significant amount of pressure off the key batters. T Natarajan's (15 wickets) accuracy would be handy for SRH as the left-arm pacer is chasing Mumbai Indians' Jasprit Bumrah (17) for the purple cap. Five-time winners Mumbai slipped to the bottom of the pool again when Royal Challengers Bengaluru trumped Gujarat Titans on Saturday night. With only three wins in 11 matches, MI's challenge is all but over and there is only pride and name left to play for by their own admission. However, all is not lost as MI's key India players for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya would remain in focus for their individual form. Rohit's all-out aggressive approach has not yielded many big scores whereas the world number 1 T20 batter Suryakumar would be eyeing consistency after a fine half-century against KKR a few nights ago. India vice-captain Pandya has being consistently on the receiving end due to his ordinary form with both bat and ball and also his on-field decisions as MI skipper. The all-rounder, however, would be keen to make amends and put an end to the criticism that he has been facing ever since this IPL edition got underway. Teams: Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya (c), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Dewald Brevis, Jasprit Bumrah, Piyush Chawla, Gerald Coetzee, Tim David, Shreyas Gopal, Ishan Kishan (wk), Anshul Kamboj, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal, Kwena Maphaka, Mohammad Nabi, Shams Mulani, Naman Dhir, Shivalik Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Arjun Tendulkar, Nuwan Thushara, Tilak Varma, Harvik Desai (wk), Nehal Wadhera, Luke Wood. Sunrisers Hyderabad: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad, Nitish Reddy, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins (c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, T Natarajan, Mayank Markande, Umran Malik, Anmolpreet Singh, Glenn Phillips (wk), Rahul Tripathi, Washington Sundar, Upendra Yadav (wk), Jhathavedh Subramanyan, Sanvir Singh, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, Akash Maharaj Singh, Mayank Agarwal. Match starts 7:30pm IST.

IPL 2024: 'I Can Feel The Confidence In The Team', Faf Wants RCB To Keep Momentum After Hat-trick Of Wins

Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) third consecutive victory in the 2024 IPL, skipper Faf du Plessis stressed on maintaining the hard-earned momentum team has established in the past two weeks. Following their triumph over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 25, RCB snapped their six-game losing streak. They continued their winning momentum with a victory against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on April 28, followed by another win in the reverse fixture on Saturday. The run of three consecutive victories propelled them from the bottom of the table to the seventh position. Boys well done tonight, unbelievable performance. From my side I can feel the confidence in the group when we are out there in the field. I hope that belief is starting to filter through the group of how good a team we are when we are playing the style of cricket we want to play. So unbelievable effort on that, du Plessis said on RCB Dressing Room Chat. With the bat I know we were not at our best tonight at the last bit of it. That is a point we will talk about in the review. But make sure we celebrate this because we have worked hard three games on the bounce. We take the momentum with us, we take the confidence with us when we move to the next game, the skipper added. Yash Dayal, Vyshak Vijaykumar and Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets each in a superb bowling performance to bundle out GT for a below-par 147. RCBs response was aggressive and decisive to begin with, led by Du Plessis and Virat Kohli, as the visitors looked well on course to victory with 92 in the powerplay. Assistant coach Adam Griffith also complemented the players for putting together the best powerplay displays for RCB in both batting and bowling, among several other brilliant performances. From the bowling perspective tonight, 23 for 3, that is the best powerplay of the tournament. We only got hit for two boundaries in that time, so well done, execution was spot-on. We bowled to the conditions perfectly, coach Griffith said. We kept talking about the aggressiveness to take wickets and to bowl a team out is always tough in a T20 game, to take 10 wickets is exactly what we were after, so well done. The last four overs, we took 5-26. We finished beautifully. It was a team bowling effort and we all played our part as a group. And 92 for 1, that is the best (batting) powerplay RCB has ever had. And Faf, that is the second fastest 50 [off 18 balls] for RCB. In the field, our first direct-hit run-out of the tournament, it was a really important wicket [Shahrukh Khan] for us, so well done Virat, he added. Also getting praise from the assistant coach was Swapnil Singh, who began the game conceding just one run off the first over, and then hit the winning runs with an unbeaten 15 off 9. Special mention for Swappers, you got the broom out there at the end. Started the game for us, finished the game for us, well done, Griffith concluded.

Self-belief and never-say-die attitude are Mohammed Siraj''s real strengths, says Sunil Gavaskar

BENGALURU: Mohammed Siraj's self-belief and never-say-die attitude are his real strengths, said batting legend Sunil Gavaskar after the pacer set up Royal Challengers Bengaluru's four-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League here. Siraj's two-wicket burst in the powerplay to remove Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha played a crucial role as GT could manage just 147 all-out in 19.3 overs on Saturday. Every time you see Mohammed Siraj, you know that he's going to give his heart out. Remember the time when his father passed away when he was in Australia. He carried on, Gavaskar said on Star Sports Cricket Live. A lot of people would want to go back because your parents are so dear to you. But I think he realised that playing for India was important. Also, he was not established at that stage. An established player would 100 per cent have gone back. And remember how spectacularly he bowled in that Gabba Test match. Getting somebody like Steve Smith out when he was on 55...so this is the real strength of Mohammed Siraj, the self-belief and the never-say-die attitude on the field. Chasing a modest 148, Faf du Plessis (64) and Virat Kohli (42) put on 92 runs inside the powerplay to give RCB a blistering start. RCB, however, slipped from 92/0 to 117/6 before romping home in 13.4 overs. IPL 2024: RCB's crucial win over GT keeps campaign alive Extraordinary stuff during the power play when RCB was batting. It was just game on, and then all of a sudden things changed. Were they trying to counter the net run rate solution? And if that is the case, then well played to them because they needed to go hard, former Australian batter Matthew Hayden said. So they lost those three wickets to Joshua Little straight away in that middle stage of the match. And then they were able to consolidate because, simply as you heard Faf at the presentation say, anything short of 180, even 190 on this high-scoring venue, was never going to be enough runs. Former England cricketer and coach Paul Collingwood also lauded the aggressive approach of the RCB batters. The intensity displayed by RCB with the ball was commendable. Even while chasing a modest total, seeing Virat Kohli stepping out of his crease and effortlessly flicking a delivery for six on just the second ball indicated their aggressive intent. This signals danger for their opponents. Despite their position near the bottom of the table, RCB didn't hold back. They showed clarity, bravery, and aggression, particularly in the middle order. Although they lost wickets, I commend their aggressive approach, he said. RCB off ventilator but still in ICU, says Ajay Jadeja

RCB off ventilator but still in ICU, says Ajay Jadeja

BENGALURU: Former India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja believes Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowlers have started to click together to take their side off the ventilator but the team still remains in the ICU following their nervy win over Gujarat Titans. RCB got over the line with four wickets and 38 balls in hand chasing a paltry 148 against GT on Saturday, a win which was set up by the bowlers. Faf du Plessis (64) and Virat Kohli (42) shared 92 runs inside the powerplay but RCB lost wickets in a heap slipping from 92/0 to 117/6 to give Gujarat a real hope of pulling off an unlikely win. The chinks in the armour are visible, what happened at the end. But the chance is there. They're off the ventilator but they're still in the ICU, Jadeja told Jio Cinema. We are excited about today's match after seeing Virat and Faf bat. But the real work that was done, was by the bowlers, an aspect RCB has historically struggled at. The bowling department has started to click for them now, and we're talking about the business end of the season, this is the point where realistic chances of winning comes from momentum Jadeja said RCB may have got the momentum after their win which took them to the seventh spot in the IPL points table, but qualifying for the playoffs remains a very tough ask. More than momentum, it's about the mentality of the team where you know if you're in a bad situation, someone will take you out of it...Today, it seemed like RCB picked the right road while Gujarat was on the other side. Who will reach their goal? It's a very tough ask still, he said. The former India cricketer, however, was impressed with RCB's aggressive approach with the bat in a small chase. They came into the game differently from the start. I haven't checked the statistics, but I have never seen them start a game with a six. Not one, but two of them, in the first over, when there was no need, he said. What Faf did, he was operating at a different pace. Later, there was some excitement in the match but at no point did it seem like this was (GT win) going to be successful.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: As the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) picked up their fourth win of the IPL 2024 after beating Gujarat Titans (GT), former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja, praising RCB's comeback in the business end of the tournament, said Faf du Plessis-led side are off the ventilator but still in ICU. Riding on a superb show by their fast bowlers and a scintillating 64 from skipper Du Plessis, RCB kept their playoff hopes alive with a four-wicket win at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Saturday's win also lifted RCB off the bottom of the table to number seven. After Yash Dayal, Vyshak Vijaykumar and Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets each to bowl out GT for a below-par 147. A dominant start by the RCB openers, skipper du Plessis and Virat Kohli, set the platform for a win. Although there were a few nerves during the run-chase, RCB were comfortable as they chased the target down with 6.2 overs to spare. Jadeja praised the overall performance from RCB with significant contributions from Kohli (42), Du Plessis (64 ), Siraj (2/29), and Dayal (2/21) and said the win reflects that RCB picked the right road in the tournament. We are excited about today's match after seeing Virat and Faf bat. But the real work that was done, was by the bowlers, an aspect RCB has historically struggled at. The bowling department has started to click for them now, and we're talking about the business end of the season, this is the point where realistic chances of winning comes from momentum... And if that is the case, then well played to them because they needed to go hard,'' former Australian batter Matthew Hayden said. ''So they lost those three wickets to Joshua Little straight away in that middle stage of the match. And then they were able to consolidate because, simply as you heard Faf at the presentation say, anything short of 180, even 190 on this high-scoring venue, was never going to be enough runs.'' Former England cricketer and coach Paul Collingwood also lauded the ''aggressive approach'' of the RCB batters. The intensity displayed by RCB with the ball was commendable. Even while chasing a modest total, seeing Virat Kohli stepping out of his crease and effortlessly flicking a delivery for six on just the second ball indicated their aggressive intent. This signals danger for their opponents. ''Despite their position near the bottom of the table, RCB didn't hold back. They showed clarity, bravery, and aggression, particularly in the middle order. Although they lost wickets, I commend their aggressive approach,'' he said.

RCB, India Hopes Soar as Siraj Rediscovers Swing and Fire

RCB, India Hopes Soar as Siraj Rediscovers Swing and Fire The change in Mohammed Sirajs fortunes has played a critical role in Royal Challengers Bengalurus late surge in this IPL, and the pacers good run might also have put the Indian thinktank at ease ahead of next months T20 World Cup. In the latest show of his metamorphosis, Siraj wrecked Gujarat Titans with a two-wicket burst in the Power Play, grabbing the wickets of Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha. Sirajs figures at that stage was a superb 2-0-9-2, and as someone who is marked to share the new ball with Jasprit Bumrah in the ICC showpiece, its certainly a shot in the arm for the national team as well. RCB assistant coach Adam Griffith, who has worked with Siraj for the last five years, placed that transformation to him ''swinging the ball again.'' ''He's the leader of our group. He's played a lot for India in the last few years and has done really well. It's not just him bowling well. It's his aggression, his body language, him taking the batters on to try and get wickets is such an important part of what we're trying to do. ''Having him up and going, swinging the ball again, bowling with good pace, and being aggressive is so important to us,'' said Griffith in the post-match press meet here on Saturday after RCB defeated GT by four wickets. The Royal Challengers bowling units performance a collective economy rate of 10.28 and 45 wickets was the worst in this season of IPL. In a way, it was Sirajs responsibility to inspire the rest of the pack as the leader and he did put his hand up. Perhaps, the nine-day break he was given between April 12 and 20 refreshed his mind and helped him regain his sharpness. The match he missed in the interim was the one in which Sunrisers Hyderabad racked in an IPL record of 287 for three in Bengaluru. Griffith explained the thought process behind giving some leisure time for Siraj. ''He's like any other player when they are fatigued. It's very important to give them that break. That's just as important as the training component, sometimes even more important. ''He is a rhythm bowler his run-up is so important to what he does. So, we want him fresh and running in hard, he said. Post his return from the break, Siraj played four matches against Kolkata Knight Riders, SRH and two against GT. While RCB lost by one-run against the Knight Riders in a high-scoring match, they won the other three. In those three matches, Siraj had figures of 4-0-20-0, 4-0-34-1 and 4-0-29-2. Griffith said Siraj has found a good balance between off-time and preparation. He knows his body really well. He knows what he needs to do to prepare and every now and then we might need to give him a little bit of a push in that direction. I've been with him now for five or so years, so I can tell when he's going well and when he needs a rest, he added. This version of Siraj was a throwback to IPL 2023 when he picked up 19 wickets and 10 of them were in the Power Play. The energy of Siraj seemed to have percolated to other bowlers too as the young Yash Dayal dished out a frugal and productive spell upfront 4-0-21-2. It meant that the Titans were restricted to the lowest Power Play score of this IPL season 23/3. Griffith said the RCB bowlers have collectively managed to hit a better line as they notched up three wins on the bounce. We've swung the ball all tournament upfront. We talked about bowling a lot straighter and attacking the stumps as much as we can to challenge the batters' defence and make them play aggressive shots if they want to come at us. That's the challenge for them to do and the boys put them exactly where we wanted them (against GT),'' he explained.

JD(S) Leader HD Revanna Detained by SIT in Connection with Kidnapping Case

Bangalore: H D Revanna, the son of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and a JD(S) MLA, was detained by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with a kidnapping case filed at the KR Nagar police station in Bengaluru.Facing new challenges, HD Revanna and his son Prajwal Revanna are implicated in a case following a complaint by a youth alleging the abduction of his mother. This complaint emerged after a video purportedly showing the youths mother being tied and assaulted by Prajwal surfaced. Prajwal, the incumbent JD(S) MP from Hassan, is accused of sexual misconduct. To investigate the matter, the state government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) following the circulation of numerous explicit videos allegedly involving the 33-year-old MP in recent days.Prajwal contested the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency as the NDA candidate in the April 26 elections. Chittoor a blend of Telugu, Tamil cultures

CHITTOOR: Bordering Tamil Nadu, Chittoor Assembly constituency is a hub for diverse cultures and traditions, shaping the lifestyles of residents, who reflect a blend of Telugu and Tamil heritages. Apart from dairy and poultry industries, a significant portion of the population relies on mango cultivation for their livelihood. While the ruling YSRC is trying to retain the seat for the second consecutive time, with a new contender this time, the TDP is attempting to make a comeback in the Chittoor Assembly segment. The YSRC has fielded MC Vijayananda Reddy, the current APSRTC vice-chairman, as its candidate, while the TDP has chosen Gurajala Jagan as its candidate for this election. Interestingly, in the past, candidates representing the DMK and AIADMK parties have contested in this constituency, highlighting its strong Tamil influence. Chittoor, the administrative centre of the district, has also been home to leaders who made significant contributions to various political parties, including the Justice Party, Swatantra Party, and Krishikar Lok Party, both before and after Independence. Among them is Madabhusi Ananthsainam Ayyangar, a prominent figure who led the freedom movement in Chittoor district, served as a Member of Parliament for Chittoor Congress, and later became the Lok Sabha Speaker. The region has a rich history of producing numerous influential leaders who actively participated in the freedom movement and held esteemed positions such as chief ministers. The presence of Tamil film actor MG Ramachandran campaigning in Chittoor further underscores this influence. Despite being the district headquarters, Chittoor has not yet seen the appointment of a minister from this area. The political landscape of Chittoor constituency has witnessed several shifts over the years. The Congress, which held sway for nearly 25 years, ceded ground to the TDP in 1989. Notably, Chittoor Krishnaswamy Jayachandra Reddy, known as CK Babu, emerged as a formidable figure in politics. He initially won as an independent MLA in 1989, later joining the Congress and securing victory for three consecutive terms (1994, 1999, and 2009). The constituencys political history saw a mix of party victories. The first MLA from Chittoor constituency, Chinnama Reddy of the Congress, clinched victory in the 1952 election. However, in a 1953 by-election, Srungaram of the Krishikar Lok Party was elected. Chinnama Reddy reclaimed victory in 1955. In subsequent years, the political landscape witnessed victories from various parties. With the emergence of the TDP in 1983, NP Jhansi Lakshmi became the MLA, but in 1985, R Gopinathan of the Congress Party emerged victorious. After a two-decade hiatus, TDP candidate AS Manohar was elected as MLA in 2004, despite the Congress coming to power, defeating TDP. Following the states bifurcation in 2014, TDP candidate DA Satyaprabha secured victory. However, in 2019, she was defeated by YSRC candidate Jangalapalli Srinivasulu. This time, the YSRC nominated MC Vijayananda Reddy, the current APSRTC vice-chairman, as the constituency in-charge, subsequently granting him a ticket for the elections. Despite speculation that the Chittoor Assembly constituency, predominantly led by the Balija community, might sway towards the Jana Sena, the Telugu Desam Party surprised many by nominating developer and film producer Gurajala Jagan as its candidate in the initial list. Hailing from Chittoor, Gurajala Jagan made a name for himself as a realtor and developer in Bengaluru before venturing into establishing educational institutions. Transitioning into film production, he also initiated a charitable trust and organised various public outreach programmes in Chittoor in recent years. Following a setback in the 2019 polls and a leadership vacuum after former MLA AS Manohar retired from active politics, the TDP chose Gurajala Jagan as its candidate for the 2024 elections. Both Gurajala Jagan and YSRCs MC Vijayananda Reddy are political novices competing against each other after the ruling party replaced sitting MLA Arani Sreenivasulu. While the YSRC employs its trademark approach to secure its hold on Chittoor, Gurajala Jagan presents his own manifesto along with the TDPs six guarantees. Despite being the constituency headquarters, Chittoor lacks adequate education and healthcare facilities. Residents still rely on CMC-Vellore and SVIMS-Tirupati for specialised medical treatment and travel to Bengaluru or Chennai for higher education. I have plans to establish a multi-disciplinary super-specialty hospital and world-class educational institutions in Chittoor, said TDP nominee G Jagan Mohan. Farmers in Chittoor are advocating for establishing Chittoor as a poultry hub, driven by the surge in demand for traditional chicken meat in the market. Many small and medium farmers have embraced backyard poultry farming, particularly in rural areas like Chittoor rural and Gudipala mandals, opting to rear local breed chicks due to lower feed costs. With the increasing demand, farmers have also begun exporting local breed chicks to neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka from Chittoor district. Narrow roads with potholes and other civic issues have been haunting the residents of the Chittoor town. Traffic congestion in PCR junction, MSR junction and old bus stand areas is regularly seen in the town. Narrow roads in church road and also in other main areas of the town have witnessed traffic congestion. Potholed roads on rail over bridges have remained a permanent issue in the town. Number of vehicles and population has increased in the town when compared to previous years. But, the roads remain the same leading to traffic congestion in main circles of the town. Even residents of the outskirts colonies have been facing troubles getting drinking water during summer season, said M Siva Kumar, a private employee in Chittoor town.

800 km trip on my V-Strom 250 SX with pillion & luggage: 6 observations

BHPian KeepTraction recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Rode the V-Strom 250 SX on an 800 km trip with a pillion and luggage (two Rynox saddlebags) covering Bengaluru -> Pulicat Lake -> Chennai -> Bengaluru via the Kolar-Chittoor highway. Observations and updates:The motorcycle had clocked 7000 km before the trip started. With 'two-up' riding, 12kgs luggage, and cruising at 80-95 km/h, the console indicated 38.8kmpl for 817 km upon finishing the trip. The Rynox Nomad V2 saddlebags have endured time and use since 2014. Except for the drawstrings of the net pockets, nothing else needs to be repaired. Outstanding quality by this ten-year-old product that remains fully usable now.I used the STHIRA Motorcycle Seat Cushion with a High-Density 3D Honeycomb structure and FEGO air seat for the pillion. Both performed very well in reducing seat fatigue. The motorcycle performed wonderfully. The suspension continues to remind me that it will be pliant only with two riders and luggage.Diversions around construction spots exist while crossing Narsapura, Mulbagal, Chittoor, and Sriperumbudur. The remaining portion of the travel was on good tarmac. The Pulicat Lake's beach on the TN side is cordoned off due to the construction of a mini-harbour, according to the locals. To start any boat ride, one must cross the Pulicat Lake bridge and reach the lighthouse area. Some fishermen are willing to give you a boat tour of the sandbars, the mangrove forest full of migratory birds, and the Pulicat Lake (1000Rs and above, based on the fuel and time). To see the migratory birds, start the boat ride before 7 am. Carry water, snacks, umbrella, and sunscreen.Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.

Extended weekend, lack of info led to low voter turnout in Bengaluru: Panel

BENGALURU: From extended weekends to voter apathy, lack of information on candidates contesting to the timing of the poll day were discussed on Friday to find reasons for low poll percentage in Bengaluru Urban district (BBMP limits), which voted on April 26 in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The online discussion -- Low polling percentage in Bengaluru Urban district (BBMP) during Lok Sabha General Election 2024, what are the root causes? -- was organised by the Bangalore Political Action Committee (BPAC). The Voter Turnout Ratio (VTR) in Bengaluru Urban district decreased from 56.01% to 53.96% over the past decade (20142024), encompassing six elections. Dr Sandeep Shastri, the National Coordinator of the Lokniti Network, highlighted significant findings on Bengalurus voter turnout. He noted that except for the 1977 Lok Sabha election, where the turnout exceeded 60%, Bengaluru has consistently experienced lower voter participation, typically hovering around the 50% range. In six elections, turnout fell below the 50% mark. Recent surveys have revealed that a substantial number of registered voters either live outside the city or prefer to cast their votes in their hometowns rather than in Bengaluru, Shashtri mentioned. Vikram Rai, president, Bangalore Apartment Federation (BAF), presented the federations analysis on baseline errors in the electoral roll. He pointed out instances where registered voters within apartment complexes frequently change their residences, both within and outside the city, yet the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) fail to synchronise with citizens, leading to inaccuracies in the electoral roll. He emphasised the need for better coordination between BLOs and citizens to refine the enumeration process and address the high potential for inaccuracies, including the failure to remove outdated names from the roll. Sudheendra MG, the KPCC spokesperson, highlighted several issues regarding voter participation. As the block president of Mahalakshmi Layout, he noted that alongside voter apathy, there is a prevailing belief among the electorate that their individual votes hold little significance. Moreover, political parties are perceived to be less active in mobilizing voters to the polling stations compared to their efforts prior to the 1990s. Sudheendra also pointed out a specific case in Booth No 80, where discrepancies were found in the electoral rolls, with a significant number of families having shifted out of the area yet still listed as voters. He suggested that the Booth Level Agents (BLA) of parties should collaborate with BBMP officials to rectify such inaccuracies, improving the accuracy of voter turnout rates. Kaveri Kedarnath, former mandal president of Malleswaram from BJP, recounted her experience at Booth No 187 in the Malleswaram Assembly Constituency (ward 76 Gayatri Nagar). She observed that out of 996 voters, 40 had passed away, while 232 had relocated within or outside the constituency. Despite these changes, BLOs had not acted to update the voter information. She emphasised that while registering as a new voter is relatively straightforward, the process of shifting ones vote within or outside the Assembly constituency is more complex. Therefore, many individuals opt to re-register as new voters instead.

Close to 1,000 RWH pits in 30 days to help increase groundwater

BENGALURU : In an attempt to increase the groundwater table across the city, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has dug up 986 Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) pits in 30 days, said the Board chairman Ram Prasath Manohar. Addressing the officials after inspecting one of the pits, BWSSB Chairman said, The shortage of water supply in Bengaluru is not to due to shortage of Cauvery water in dams, rather due to grooundwater drying up across the city. He further added that during monsoon, the rainwater easily gets into the seepage well and recharges the groundwater, and this is being monitored zone-wise. Similarly, the rainwater from the streets is also diverted towards the seepage well, to avoid the water passing through drains, and going to waste. I had given a target of 250 seepage pits in each zone, and officials have shown 98.6 per cent efficiency, said Manohar and added that before asking the public to set up such pits, the Board took the initiative to install such pits on government properties. We preach what we practice, he added. The BWSSB aims to create awareness among people about the importance of rainwater harvesting and seepage wells, and convince the public to install such pits in their houses and properties to ensure groundwater table is recharged. He also added that the Boards proposal for a community rainwater harvesting project was welcomed by the people, and this proposal will ensure the lakes and tanks are filled up. The Board had given 74 proposals which are now being implemented in phases. We aim to become ideal models for others to bring a positive change. Before, asking the people to include recharge percolation pits compulsorily, the Board dug 986 pits. Our overall aim is to adopt new technology and recharge the groundwater, said the chairman.

Anitha Rao: Busting taboos one period at a time

BENGALURU: If Covid has taught us anything, it is hygiene and the relentless effort one must take to prevent viruses and infections. However, women are always the ones losing out in this bargain. With a mission to create awareness around menstruation, address the taboos and encourage basic hygiene practices, Anitha Rao, a 40-yr-old social entrepreneur and activist, embarked on a journey about a decade ago. Anitha took the first step after she visited government schools and slums near her residence. I didnt just want to do social service without understanding what Indians lack and our grassroots issues. On my visit, I saw that women lacked basic hygiene and had no information on menstruation and many deemed it to be unlucky, Anitha told TNSE. She added that in India, about 355 million women and girls menstruate every month, however only 36 per cent of them know why it happens, where it happens, and why its crucial to have a healthy body. She further explained that only 16 per cent of urban women practice menstrual hygiene. Neither my mother nor my grandmother told me about menstrual hygiene. When I belong to an educated family and nobody told me, how would those living in rural areas and slums know, she questioned. In 2019, she officially registered the Sakriya Charitable Trust, which conducts menstrual hygiene sessions for underprivileged women. A single-woman army of her Trust, she takes sessions on menstruation across various sections of society through unique initiatives. Anitha Rao explains the function of reusable pads and menstrual cups to girls, in one of her workshops Before she began taking sessions, Anitha spent six months understanding the subject. She spoke to several doctors, vetted her information and read about the taboos, not just in India but also around the world. So far, the NGO has impacted one lakh women. With a background in aviation, Anitha was 19 when she started earning and travelled over 63 countries as an airhostess for Gulf Air, followed by a stint with Etihad Airways in Bahrain between 1998 and 2005. She recalled some instances from her trips where she was taken aback by the unawareness among young girls and women. In the interiors of Kolar, many women were not wearing underpants. They didnt know anything about breast or cervical cancer. They had no knowledge about why it is important to change pads every four to eight hours. Not just basic information, her sessions also create awareness on different kinds of blood flows and what they indicate. Pink blood indicates ovarian cancer and abortion, jam-like blood could mean fibroids, yellowish blood is due to hormonal imbalance, etc. Nobody tells women what a healthy period blood should look like, not even doctors, she explained. Anitha Rao with women officiers at Bangalore Central jail during one of her visits She also conducts awareness campaigns in cemeteries. I carry a small model with me and explain the process step-by-step. Many didnt even know why women dont menstruate during pregnancy. All they know is the pelvic region is used for excretion and reproduction. Anitha said that most NGOs only distribute pads in rural areas, but do not impart knowledge about the process. The social entrepreneur visits Bangalore Central Prison 3-4 times a month. There is nobody to take care of the inmates. They have become friends with me and are happy to see me. Weve even screened them for oral and cervical cancer, dental checkups and recently we even organised eye checks, giving 37 women new glasses, says Anitha. Anithas sessions have also been conducted across police stations, with prison police, traffic police, BMTC, KSRTC, and other groups. Through the trust, we built a female-only washroom in one of the police stations. After my sessions at jails in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi, I am planning to visit Mandya and Mysurus prisons too, she said. In December 2020, her trust collaborated with local NGOs and volunteers from Kashmir to Kanyakumari to launch Sakriya Period Part Abhiyan. They created and screened a video on menstrual hygiene in regional languages and made it inclusive for speech and hearing impaired and other differently-abled individuals. They also screened it in orphanages and public spaces at the same time, across all states. During this one-hour programme in 2021, nearly 17,000 children and women benefitted. The initiative received a Kalams World Record. A chart explaining what a healthy period flow looks like Not only rural but many urban government schools and colleges lack basic infrastructure for girls, Anitha said, adding that school washrooms dont have latches or dustbins. If we want girls not to drop out, these steps need to be taken. Awareness needs to be spread vigorously, she emphasised. On sustainability, she said plastic pads need to be banned, awareness needs to be created that such pads are not biodegradable. There is change, but it is happening at a small scale, and will take some time. Menstrual cups and reusable pads can be one solution. However, its very difficult to convince rural women to use these newer, more sustainable means, she shares. Spread the word! Sakriya became the first NGO to create a mural on menstrual hygiene on Namma Metro in Bengaluru. The NGO will create menstrual hygiene awareness at bus-stands, railway stations, airports and other public places through these murals.

Women groups demand action against Revanna

BENGALURU : Over 700 women including several women welfare groups and social rights activists across the country have signed a petition against the alleged crimes committed against women by Prajwal Revanna and HD Revanna. The petition was initiated by the All-India Feminist Alliance (ALIFA) and Women for Democracy (WFD). The community has written to the National Commission for Women (NCW), calling for strong legal action and has questioned the lack of prompt and strict action by the commission. The letter reads, Why has the response of the custodian of womens rights in the country (NCW) remained so minimal when no less than a Member of Parliament and a sitting MLA face grave charges of sexual abuse and violence against multiple women. The group held NCW accountable and said that if it had taken timely and stringent action in previous cases, such incidents would not have happened. We do not hesitate in saying that the NCW has failed the women of this country, by allowing the institution to become an agency for political vendetta and agendas of the ruling party at the Centre. The lack of swift action in numerous cases of violations of womens rights, only establishes that the Commission is no longer keen on upholding womens rights as per its mandate in the NCW Act of 1990, stated the letter which included the 700 signatories. The activists have demanded that NCW issue summons to the father-son duo and initiate a swift inquiry, recommending appropriate legal and criminal action against them as per the powers vested in the commission. Other demands include the protection of the identities of survivors as well as adequate safety and security for all the women who have faced sexual abuse under the Witness Protection Scheme, 2018. Ensure necessary psychological, medical, financial and legal support to all the survivors, as well as rehabilitation under NALSAs compensation scheme for Women Survivors of Sexual Assault, 2018. Direct all online platforms and digital search engines to de-index and take down the videos and images, to protect the safety and dignity of the survivors. Circulation and distribution of this content online and offline must be strictly forbidden and stern legal action must be taken, read the letter.

Solving cyber crime a Task for the force

BENGALURU : Majority of the cyber crime cases reported, conclude with closure reports, usually filed where there are not sufficient grounds to investigate, shortly after the victims bank accounts are blocked. Due to the trend of increasing complexity and limited manpower within the city police department, cyber fraud cases are not being prioritised, said a senior officer attached to cyber crime investigations said. The fraudsters are more dedicated in planning the crime than the whole investigation planning. Most of the time, cyber crime investigations are on the back foot when other obligations such as bandobast or election duty or dealing with law and order crimes take priority, the senior official highlighted. The official added that, unlike minor law and order incidents like chain snatching, which are addressed with utmost seriousness, not always is a specialized team working exclusively on the cyber crime. Given this trend, detection will remain unattainable even if the reporting percentage rises. In conventional crimes, even if the amount of money lost is not significant, the visual panic it creates is evident, unlike cybercrime, where apart from the victim, nobody else is visibly affected by the incident, a senior official highlighted, and further said that unlike in conventional crime, where investigating officers can often trace the accused using CCTV footage and other physical evidence, tracking down a cyber fraudster is nearly impossible, due to multiple IP addresses. Solving cyber crime cases often involves coordination between interstate law enforcement authorities, and once the accused is tracked down, it can solve more than 100 cases at a time as the fraudster uses thousands of SIM cards, multiple laptops, and phones, and tries different modus operandi on multiple victims. While increasing the number of police forces involved in cracking these cases is essential, banks and telecom companies must also ensure that online payments cannot be completed while someone is still on a call. This is necessary because these fraudsters often distract victims on calls, said the senior official. He added that an SMS alert or call should be triggered, whenever uses a different IP address to login, or makes payments at unusual times in case of net banking.

No bail, HD Revanna in SIT custody

BENGALURU: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday evening arrested Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna in the kidnap case registered against him at KR Nagar police station in Mysuru district by the son of one of the victims of the alleged sexual abuse involving the MLA and his son and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna. Two FIRs were registered against Revanna. The first on a complaint of sexual harassment filed by one of the victims in Holenarasipur town police station in Hassan district on April 28. The second based on a kidnap complaint filed by another victims 20-year-old son on May 2 in KR Nagar police station, for which Revanna was arrested. Revanna was picked up by the SIT from his father and former PM HD Deve Gowdas house at Padmanabhanagar in Bengaluru after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the Peoples Representative Court. Minutes after the bail application was rejected, a team of SIT officials headed by SP CA Simon went to Deve Gowdas house. The SIT was trailing Revanna after he left Holenarasipura four days ago saying that he would not run away, but fight the case legally. The SIT kept a hawks eye on him to ensure he did not escape. The officials were waiting for the courts order. After the court denied him anticipatory bail, the SIT officers, who were there, immediately informed their colleagues who were already positioned near Deve Gowdas house to move ahead and arrest Revanna. The SIT had credible information that Revanna was in his fathers house. A team of five SIT officials, in two vehicles, rushed to Deve Gowdas house. Security near the SIT office on Palace Road was beefed up after JDS MLA HD Revanna was arrested and brought there from the residence of his father former PM HD Deve Gowda, in Bengaluru on Saturday | Shashidhar Byrappa Revanna minces no words As the doors were not opened, the SIT officials waited outside the house for about 45 minutes, during which they ensured there were no escape routes. Around 6.50pm, Revanna was arrested when he came out of his fathers house. Revanna went with the SIT officials without mincing words. He was whisked away by the SIT in an SUV and brought to their office on Palace Road at 7.34 pm. The entire proceedings outside Deve Gowdas house were videographed by the SIT. Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat refused to grant interim anticipatory bail after hearing arguments of senior counsel Murthy D Naik, representing Revanna, and special public prosecutor BN Jagadeesha. Referring to an apex court judgment on granting of limited anticipatory bail, the special court said as rightly argued by the special public prosecutor, the protection of life and liberty of the victim would be of paramount consideration and it is a fundamental right. It is also relevant to note that the court has to balance the equities of the complainant/victim and the rights granted to the accused. Further, the dictum of the apex court at the same time would clearly indicate that the anticipatory or the interim bail cannot be granted in a mechanical manner, the court said. The court has to look into the seriousness of the allegations levelled and also with all facts and circumstances of the case. Since the victim is yet to be traced, it would not be appropriate to admit the petitioner on interim anticipatory bail. However, at this juncture, it is made clear that the observations made here are not with respect to the merits or demerits of the case, the judge said. SIT takes victims to Revannas house, Prajwals MP quarters Officers of the Special Investigation Team visited the residence of JDS MLA H D Revanna in Holenarasipur town and the official quarters of MP Prajwal Revanna in Hassan and conducted a spot mazhar. Two victims, a woman and her daughter, accompanied the team. The officers took the victims to particular spots in Revannas house, including the bedroom, storeroom and kitchen, and recorded their statements. The MLAs wife Bhavani Revanna was present in the house. The victims had lodged a complaint with Holenarasipur Town police that Revanna and his son Prajwal had sexually assaulted them at various places in the house. The team also visited the official quarters of Prajwal on RC Road on Saturday night. Officers visited different spots along with the victims in the quarters and video recorded their statements. Additional police force has been deployed around the premises. Revanna undergoes medical tests Revanna, who was taken to the SIT office to complete the arrest formalities, was subjected to mandatory medical tests at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in the evening. After undergoing tests for 90 minutes, Revanna was taken back to the SIT office around 11pm. Revanna spent the night at the office. Action will be taken as per law, says CM Reacting to the arrest of JDS MLA H D Revanna on Saturday night, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said he will not interfere in the case and action has to be taken against the accused as per law. Speaking to a section of the media in Chikkodi on Saturday night, the CM said the police arrested Revanna after his plea for anticipatory bail was rejected by the court.

Sex scandal came out due to family feud: DK Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Saturday that the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna came out in public because of the feud between the families of former CM HD Kumaraswamy and his brother and former minister HD Revanna. Shivakumar, the KPCC president, hit back at Kumaraswamy after the latter said that the case will see a new twist regarding those who are behind leaking the contents of the pen drive after the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 7. Why waste time till May 7? Should I spill the beans before that? He (Kumaraswamy) had said uppu tindavaru neeru kudeetare (Those who eat salt must drink water). Did I make that statement? The statements show that the entire episode is because of the internal issues between the two families. Why did he apologise to the people over the issue? Shivakumar said while speaking to reporters. Shivakumar further alleged that Kumaraswamy had also said in the past that the JDS would not give ticket to Prajwal and that none of their family members would contest from Hassan. If you want, look at the statements of his family members since the last Assembly elections. Now in the pen drive case too, Kumaraswamy is issuing random statements, changing his stance daily, Shivakumar alleged. On the murmurs of 12 JDS MLAs joining the Congress because of the Prajwal row, he said, It is a lie. No one is in touch with me. Some MLAs are desperate about this, and everyone knows the internal problems in the party and the family. Listen to the statements made by Kumaraswamys family from the time of the distribution of tickets for the Assembly election. On Kuamaraswamys statement that Shivakumar is under the illusion of becoming the undisputed leader of the Vokkaliga community, the DyCM said that he doesnt want to be branded as the leader of one particular community as he is happy to be a Congress leader.

SIT approaches CBI for Blue Corner Notice against Prajwal

BENGALURU : The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the alleged rape and sexual harassment cases against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, has approached the CBI to issue a Blue Corner Notice against the MP. The CBI, which is the nodal agency for INTERPOL matters in India, is authorised to issue the Blue Corner Notice based on documents and evidence provided to it by the SIT against the MP, who is now abroad. The Blue Corner Notice is issued to collect information about the accuseds movement, location or activities. Since Prajwal has gone abroad using his diplomatic passport, the central agencies will have his travel details. Without SIT approaching them, the CBI cannot directly issue the Blue Corner Notice against Prajwal. The CBI can also turn down the request of SIT if there is no proper evidence against the accused. The SIT officials have also informed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah about the possibility of CBI issuing the Blue Corner Notice against Prajwal. The chief minister held a meeting with SIT officials on Saturday on the cases against Prajwal. Siddaramaiah instructed the officials to take immediate action to arrest Prajwal. The officials assured him of arresting Prajwal and getting him back at the earliest. Prajwal did not appear before the SIT although it issued a notice to him on Tuesday and lookout notices on Thursday and Friday against him. He is said to have gone to Germany on April 27. Prajwal, who has a diplomatic passport, does not need any visa to go abroad. After the first notice was issued, the MP, through his advocate, had sought a weeks time to appear before the SIT. However, his petition was turned down. It is said that Prajwal has booked a return ticket to Bengaluru from Munich on May 15 and will land in Bengaluru in the wee hours of May 16. Meanwhile, eight more officials have been deputed to the SIT to speed up the investigation. Rahul asks CM to provide all support to victims Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the case involving JDS MP Prajwal Revanna has deeply disturbed the nation and upholding justice for the victims is crucial for maintaining faith in the legal system. Responding to former AICC president Rahul Gandhis letter asking the state government to provide support to the victims, the CM stated, Rahul Gandhi has written a letter, emphasising support for the victims. We are committed to providing all necessary assistance to ensure a fair process. In his letter to the CM, Rahul stated that the victims deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book. Prajwal Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years. Many who looked up to him as a brother and son were brutalized in the most violent manner and robbed of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters warrants the strictest possible punishment, he stated. Rahul said he was shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, Home Minister Amit Shah was informed by BJP G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwals antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator. What is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the senior-most BJP leadership, the Prime Minister campaigned and canvassed for a mass rapist, he stated. Prajwal will surrender before SIT: JDS leader JDS leader and former minister CS Puttaraju said JDS MLA HD Revanna surrendered before SIT after taking his father former PM HD Deve Gowdas blessings. Puttaraju said party MP Prajwal Revanna will also surrender before the SIT. Prajwal is currently travelling abroad.

IN-SPACe norms for launching satellites

BENGALURU : To promote ease of doing business, space regulator Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) introduced norms and guidelines for the effective implementation of the Indian space policy, which the booming space industry has been demanding for a while. This will help stakeholders to better understand the regulations and streamline the activities from building, launching and setting up ground stations. The document also includes information on how private players can share remote sensing data. The 147-page report lists norms, guidelines and procedures (NGP) for the effective implementation of the Indian Space Policy 2023 that will authorize space activities. The NGP aims to provide transparency for the Non-Government Entities (NGEs). According to the report any entity whether Indian or foreign, carrying out space activities from Indian territory will need authorisation from IN-SPACe. For foreign companies, they should have a subsidiary or partnership with an Indian entity. The applicants will also have to take measures to reduce the generation of space debris under the applicable Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN-COPUOS) (2007). During the mission planning stages, the private party needs to determine collision risk based on the background Space Object density during the transit phase. The mission orbit should be selected by considering the Space Object density in the neighbouring orbital regime to ensure that the cumulative collision probability over the mission life is less than 1 in 1000. It is recommended to avoid selecting mission orbits in densely populated orbital regions wherever feasible, states the NGP report.

Coaching centres involved in setting of question papers: KAMS

BENGALURU: After the fiasco of out of syllabus questions appearing in the CET question papers conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) this year, the Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) has written a letter to the Minister of Higher Education, MC Sudhakar, and demanded appropriate action must be taken against those responsible for formulating such confusing question papers. Despite the governments decision to award grace marks for the out-of-syllabus question, the association has sought suspension of the officers, and an investigation into the matter. KAMS in the letter alleged that many coaching centres are in cahoots with education department employees, and are interfering in the process of preparing question papers, and they need to be punished. Those who prepared the question papers need to be investigated for their connection with coaching centres. Many institutions in the name of integrated coaching, have their own curriculum which only benefits the students that are a part of those coaching centres, affecting lakhs who dont prescribe to them, read the letter.

Hundreds of Bhatkal expats fly home to vote

BHATKAL/BENGALURU : Hundreds of people from Bhatkal, who are working in West Asia, are returning home just to exercise their franchise on May 7. This, it is said to be in response to the appeal by Bhatkal Tanzeem. It is learnt that the travel expenses of these voters are met by the Tanzeem. Taking a cue from Kerala, where a large number of residents who are working abroad, came down to vote, the Tanzeem has appealed to the people of Bhatkal, who are working abroad, to return home and exercise their franchise without fail. Bhatkal comes under the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency. BJP candidate Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said he was told that the Tanzeem pays the travel expenses of those who come to Bhatkal to vote. We are keeping a tab on it. If we find any such thing, we will complain to the Election Commission, he said. However, Inayathullah Shabandari, president of Majlise Islah Wa Tanzeem, Bhatkal, said the Tanzeem has no role in this. Many of them are coming to India now just to vote. They are coming on their own, bearing the expenses themselves. Most of them are rich. Only for those, who are not financially sound but are willing to come to vote, there are Tanzeems and Jamaats representing our people across West Asia. They have agreed to help them to an extent. We have branches of the Jamaat in Dubai, Mumbai and other places. It is in the interest of democracy, he told TNIE. We decided to appeal to our people after we saw Keralites working in West Asia participating in the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala in large numbers. About 40,000 people visited Kerala just to vote. We do not have such big numbers, ours will be in hundreds, he said. He said he is not sure how many will come and vote from West Asia. Around 15,000 people from Bhatkal are in Dubai, Jeddah, Qatar, Kuwait and other countries in West Asia. We hope at least 10% of them will come and vote, Inayathullah said.

Resume all daily flights from Tiruchy, Sri Lankan Airlines urged

TIRUCHY: Residents of the central region of the state having to fly to Sri Lanka and Gulf countries await SriLankan Airlines to resume its operations to pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels as they complain that a lone daily flight is forcing those left out to travel to Chennai or Bengaluru in order to catch one to Colombo. Until 2020, SriLankan Airlines operated two daily services between Colombo and Tiruchy. However, the spread of the Covid-19 virus and subsequent lockdowns brought international flight operations to a grinding halt. While international flights to eight destinations from Tiruchy have been restored since, the operations to Colombo havent as SriLankan Airlines is yet to reintroduce its second daily flight. While the airline handled 82,976 passengers in the Tiruchy-Colombo route in 2023-24, it was 1.83 lakh passengers during the pre-pandemic period (2019-20). With Colombo serving as a transit point for Gulf countries, there is growing demand among passengers from Tiruchy and surrounding districts for additional flights in the sector. S Usman, a resident of Kajamalai in Tiruchy, who was employed in Oman, said, Residents of the central region, including Tiruchy, used to fly to Gulf countries via Colombo when the airline operated two daily flights. With it reducing to one flight, frequent flyers are forced to travel via Chennai or Bengaluru to reach their destination in the Gulf. Travel tour operator A Nargis Beham said, The Tiruchy-Colombo sector still enjoys significant patronage. Due to internal economic crisis, the island nation has suspended the second daily flight to Tiruchy. Restoring the service would provide great relief to hundreds of passengers.

The onus was on Kolhi to guide the team home but he was also dismissed for 42 by the 11th over. However, Dinesh Karthik displayed his experience to steady the ship along with Swapnil Singh, helping the team record a much-needed win with 38 balls to spare. The four-wicket victory, in the process, pushed RCB from bottom to seventh in the IPL standings. Earlier, Shahrukh Khan's 37 and David Miller's 30 had helped Gujarat to post 147 in 19.3 overs. Shahrukh's controlled aggression came in handy while Miller put the short handle to effective use and was harsh on Karn Sharma before eventually losing his wicket to the same bowler. Reeling at 19 for 3 after 5.3 overs, Shahrukh and Miller played the rescue act. After being asked to bat, Gujarat got off to a disastrous start as Wriddhiman Saha was sent back by Mohammed Siraj in the second over. The onus was on captain Shubman Gill and the in-form B Sai Sudharsan to take charge and help Gujarat get a good start. With the team lying at eighth spot going into the match, it was a must-win game for Gujarat as well. ''The talk is to win four in four. It's important to turn up and deliver our best. I feel our fielding has let us down. We have had a chat about it. We need to be a better team as a fielding unit. IPL is such a long tournament. It's important to turn up on the day. We have two changes, Manav Suthar makes his debut and Josh Little comes in,'' said Gill had said before the match. However, Gill (2 off 7 balls) didn't last long as he fell to Siraj. He got out while trying to whip a good-length delivery towards the on side. He closed the face of the bat too soon and found the top edge. The deep third fielder, Vyshak Vijaykumar, came in and claimed the catch. Vijaykumar later claimed two wickets. Soon, it became a nightmare situation for the visiting side as Sai Sudharsan was also dismissed soon. Cameron Green outfoxed Sai Sudharsan with a change of pace. That's when Shahrukh and Miller intervened. Later, Rahul Tewatia hit 21-ball 35 to help the team cross the 140-run mark. Brief scores: GT 147 in 19.3 ovs (Shahrukh 37, Tewatia 35; Siraj 2/29, Dayal 2/21, Vijaykumar 2/23) lost to RCB 152/6 in 13.4 ovs (Faf 64, Virat 42; Little 4/45).

IPL 2024: Royal Challengers Bangalore Beats Gujarat Titans

Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) managed to survive a middle-over scare of quick wickets despite an explosive partnership between skipper Faf Du Plessis and Virat Kohli to record a four-wicket win against Gujarat Titans (GT) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Saturday. RCB has jumped to the seventh place in the points table, with four wins and seven losses, giving them eight points. With the same win-loss record and points but an inferior net-run-rate, GT is in the ninth spot. In the run-chase of 148 runs, RCB was off to a fine start. Virat made his attacking intentions clear by smashing Mohit Sharma for two sixes over long-off and deep midwicket with his signature wrist work. In the next over bowled by Joshua Little, skipper Faf Du Plessis joined the party by taking him to the cleaners with two fours and six on the first three balls and ended the over with a boundary over midwicket, looting 20 runs from the over. Du Plessis continued his carnage, first hitting Manav Suthar for a six and four in the third over and then launching Mohit for four boundaries in the fifth over, bringing up the 50 runs in just 3.1 overs. Mohit continued to prove aggressive for GT, conceding 32 runs in just two overs. In the next over, Virat started dealing in sixers, smashing Suthar for two successive sixes over long-on and cow corner. Faf reached his half-century in just 18 balls, with eight fours and two sixes. This was the second fastest half-century by an RCB batter, next to Chris Gayle's 17-ball fifty in 2013 against Pune Warriors India. Little broke the partnership, getting the wicket of Du Plessis for 64 in 23 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes. RCB is 92/1 in 5.5 overs. Shahrukh Khan took the catch at the edge of the inner ring. At the end of the powerplay, RCB was 92/1, with Virat (28*) joined by Will Jacks. However, Jacks could not stay for long either, dismissed for just one run by Noor Ahmed after he was caught by Shahrukh. RCB was 99/2 in 6.5 overs. RCB reached the 100-run mark in seven overs. GT made a brief comeback into the game in the next two overs. First, it was Noor Ahmed who got Will Jacks caught for just one run by Shahrukh Khan at long-on. Next, Joshua Little brought a twist in the game with quick wickets of Rajat Patidar (2), Glenn Maxwell (4) and Cameron Green (1) within his two final overs. RCB slipped to 111/5 in 9.5 overs. In the next over, RCB received its biggest jolt as Noor removed Virat for 42 in 27 balls with two fours and four sixes after an edge was caught by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. RCB was 117/6 in 10.4 overs. Edged and taken by Saha, Virat is dismissed by Noor for 42 in 27 balls, with two fours and four sixes. RCB was 117/6 in 10.4 overs. Dinesh Karthik, the team's designated finisher, eased some pressure with three boundaries in Rashid Khan's over. RCB was left with 15 runs to get in eight overs. Swapnil hit Noor for two boundaries in the next, leaving RCB with five runs to chase in 42 balls. RCB ended its innings at 152/6 in 13.4 overs, with Swapnil Singh (15*) and Dinesh Karthik (21*) unbeaten. Joshua Little (4/45) fought incredibly for GT, while Noor Ahmed also got two wickets for 23 runs. Earlier, a crucial 61-run partnership between David Miller and Shahrukh Khan followed by Rahul Tewatia's blitz cameo propelled Gujarat Titans (GT) to 147 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru after RCB pacers ran wreaked havoc on GT batters in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match here at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. Yash Dayal was the pick of the bowlers as he scalped two wickets, conceding just 21 while Mohammed Siraj also bagged two. Cameron Green, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Karn Sharma claimed one wicket each. Miller (30) along with Shahrukh (37) knitted a partnership of 61 in just 37 deliveries for the fourth wicket and brought some life into the Gujarat innings while Rahul Tewatia slammed 35 runs and Rashid Khan scored 18 to take GT's total to 147. Opted to bowl first, Mohammed Siraj gave Gujarat double blows early in the match as he removed Wriddhiman Saha for 1 in the 2nd over and GT captain Shubman Gill for 2. In the 6th over, Cameron Green bagged the wicket in his first over and sent back the in-form Sai Sudharsan. After being three wickets down, David Miller and Shahrukh Khan led GT's recovery as the duo slammed big shots at regular intervals. However, Karn Sharma ended Gujarat's fightback as he broke the 61-run partnership, removing Miller for 30. In the 13th over, Virat Kohli exhibited an excellent display of fielding as his direct hit ran out the well-set batter Shahrukh Khan for 37. In the 16th over Rahul Tewatia smoked Karn for 19 runs, smashing 4,6,4,4, giving Gujarat hope of a competitive total. The duo of Tewatia and Rashid Khan kept the scoreboard ticking for their team before Yash dismissed the Afghanistan player for 18. Yash in the same over stuck again as he removed dangerous batter Tewatia for 35 runs. In the last over, Vijaykumar Vyshak gave GT a double blow as he removed Manav Suthar and Vijay Shankar to bundle out Gujarat to 147. Brief score: Gujarat Titans 147 in 19.3 overs (Shahrukh Khan 37, Rahul Tewatia 35; Yash Dayal 2-23) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 152/6 (Faf Du Plessis 64, Virat Kohli 42, Josh Little 4/45)

IPL 2024: Was Sick, Wasnt Going To Play At All, Reveals Mohammed Siraj After Brilliant Spell V GT

Indian Premier League: Fridays rain ahead of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru-Gujarat Titans clash meant that fast-bowlers could get some help in Saturday's clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here. It happened exactly like that as Mohammed Siraj, Vysakh Vijaykumar and Yash Dayal were spot-on with their lengths and found movement to bowl out Gujarat Titans for just 147 in Match 52 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Siraj got the ball to move both ways in his Power-play and that helped him in dismissing Wriddhiman Saha for the fourth time in seven innings. He then forced Shubman Gill to whip and ended up being caught at deep point off a leading edge. He eventually finished with figures of 2-29, earning him Player of the Match award after RCBs four-wicket win. I was actually sick since last night and wasn't going to play at all today, so this is great. When I got up this morning I thought it was better to rest but the almighty made me play. I kind of manifested it this morning because I envisioned it in a way that I would get Saha out like that, caught behind. I had been playing red-ball cricket for long and hadn't played with the white ball since the ODI World Cup. So my rhythm was missing a little bit when I came here. But it came back gradually as I worked and practised more and more, said Siraj after the match ended, where it seemed he was getting his white-ball mojo back, especially with the T20 World Cup starting immediately after IPL 2024. With the bat, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli gave RCB a blazing start with a 92-run opening stand off just 35 balls. Du Plessis, the RCB captain, was the more aggressive of the two, hitting 10 fours and three sixes in his 23-ball 64. Du Plessis felt the phase where RCB lost six wickets in quick succession is something to be taken note of while appreciating his bowling group for being consistent. There was more bounce in the wicket, we got that information and the bowlers were consistently really good. We dropped a catch but have been really consistent. Something around 180-90 would have been a good score, but we've seen the way the game has changed. Don't look at the scoreboard and play the way that we want to play. It was a bit nerve-racking, another wicket, another wicket. Probably not the best (way to complete a chase) but you're trying to be positive, get your NRR up. It makes sense from that point of view but it gets to the point when you need to show a bit of calmness and composure - probably around four down, so some lessons to be learned from that. It took Dinesh Karthiks 21 not out and Swapnil Singhs unbeaten 15 to get RCB over the line in 13.4 overs and help them jump to seventh place in the points table. Karthik was having tea and drank cappuccino after four overs, with the thought being his batting chance wouldnt come, but he had to come in to save the day. But things happened and then I had to have a bat. How to hit boundaries, basic cricketing skills come through. I backed myself to get the job done. The pitch was good to bowl on, having been under the covers there was a bit of moisture, said Karthik. Good toss to win but the bowlers did the job beautifully. The way Faf and Virat batted, I don't think they would have played the same shots batting first! Play for the one that comes in (on advice to Swapnil). Said the sweep is a good option, but commit to it, he added. RCBs win also meant GT slid to ninth place, while Mumbai Indians became the new occupants of tenth position in the points table. GT captain Shubman Gill admitted his batters should have posted 170-180 on board, with their playoff hopes now hanging by a slim thread. It depends on the wicket. First couple of overs you get a good idea and play according to that. I think 170-80 on this wicket would have been a good total. How we batted in the Power-play, and how they bowled, decided the game. We would have had one extra bowler but losing three wickets in the powerplay (changed planning). Very important to start from zero in our next match and move on from this game. Learn from mistakes and not repeat them. All about winning from here on, said Gill. RCB will now travel to Dharamsala, where they will take on Punjab Kings on May 9 at the HPCA Stadium while GT will return home to Ahmedabad and rest before preparing to host defending champions Chennai Super Kings on May 10 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
