IPL: SRH eye consistency in must-win clash against frail MI

Mumbai: A confident Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to produce a dominant show against a frail Mumbai Indians outfit and move up in the Indian Premier League points table when the two teams clash here on Monday. Placed fourth in the IPL points table with 12 points in 10 matches with six wins and four losses, SRH will be desperate to produce an all-round show and make improvements especially in their bowling department. The Pat Cummins-led side is in the midst of an intense battle between multiple teams who are bidding for spots in the final four, with Rajasthan Royals (16 points), Kolkata Knight Riders (14 points) and Lucknow Super Giants (12 points) placed above SRH. Chennai Super Kings (5th with 10 points) and a resurgent Delhi Capitals (6th with 10 points) are breathing down SRH's neck, a scenario that would force the 2016 winners to shrug off any rust and get ready for an intense mid-table battle. If a two-paced pitch at the Wankhede Stadium for the previous clash against KKR was an aberration, the free-flowing SRH batters would look to make merry and pile up a huge score as they have done several times this year. The pitches here generally are batting-friendly and short boundary lengths at this venue make scores in excess of 200 a norm, but the MI-KKR contest played out on a sluggish surface last Friday challenged the batters to dig deep. SRH would be high on confidence having pipped the table-toppers RR by just one run in their previous outing, a game in which their bowlers pulled off a thrilling win. Travis Head (396 runs), Abhishek Sharma (315) and Heinrich Klaasen (337) remain the enforcers in SRH's batting but South African Aiden Markram would be keen to make a big score of his own, having had a mixed run so far. Nitish Kumar Reddy (219 runs) has emerged as one of the most promising players for SRH in last few games which takes a significant amount of pressure off the key batters. T Natarajan's (15 wickets) accuracy would be handy for SRH as the left-arm pacer is chasing Mumbai Indians' Jasprit Bumrah (17) for the purple cap. Five-time winners Mumbai slipped to the bottom of the pool again when Royal Challengers Bengaluru trumped Gujarat Titans on Saturday night. With only three wins in 11 matches, MI's challenge is all but over and there is only pride and name left to play for by their own admission. However, all is not lost as MI's key India players for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya would remain in focus for their individual form. Rohit's all-out aggressive approach has not yielded many big scores whereas the world number 1 T20 batter Suryakumar would be eyeing consistency after a fine half-century against KKR a few nights ago. India vice-captain Pandya has being consistently on the receiving end due to his ordinary form with both bat and ball and also his on-field decisions as MI skipper. The all-rounder, however, would be keen to make amends and put an end to the criticism that he has been facing ever since this IPL edition got underway. Teams: Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya (c), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Dewald Brevis, Jasprit Bumrah, Piyush Chawla, Gerald Coetzee, Tim David, Shreyas Gopal, Ishan Kishan (wk), Anshul Kamboj, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal, Kwena Maphaka, Mohammad Nabi, Shams Mulani, Naman Dhir, Shivalik Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Arjun Tendulkar, Nuwan Thushara, Tilak Varma, Harvik Desai (wk), Nehal Wadhera, Luke Wood. Sunrisers Hyderabad: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad, Nitish Reddy, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins (c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, T Natarajan, Mayank Markande, Umran Malik, Anmolpreet Singh, Glenn Phillips (wk), Rahul Tripathi, Washington Sundar, Upendra Yadav (wk), Jhathavedh Subramanyan, Sanvir Singh, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, Akash Maharaj Singh, Mayank Agarwal. IPL 2024: CSK Pacer Matheesha Pathirana Returns To Sri Lanka For Hamstring Injury Recovery

Chennai Super Kings: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) said on Sunday said fast-bowler Matheesha Pathirana will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery from a hamstring injury. Pathirana made his CSK debut in IPL 2022 season, and played a pivotal role in their title-winning run in 2023. Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery. Chennai Super Kings wishes Pathirana a quick recovery, said the franchise in a statement. Pathirana played six matches for CSK this season, picking up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.68, including a four-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians. He currently sits as CSKs second-leading wicket-taker in IPL 2024 behind Mustafizur Rahman's 14 scalps. The Sri Lankan is the second CSK pacer to be dealing with injuries this season after Deepak Chahar pulled his hamstring and went off the field after bowling the first two balls of the Punjab Kings chase at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 1. In ten matches of IPL 2024, defending champions CSK have lost five and have won as many games. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side are currently placed at fifth position on the points table and need a win over their ongoing match against Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala to keep their IPL 2024 playoffs chances alive.

Congress Names Jay Narayan Patnaik as Lok Sabha Candidate from Puri

Puri: The Congress party has announced Jay Narayan Patnaik as its Lok Sabha candidate from Puri in Odisha. This decision comes after Sucharita Mohanty returned her ticket, citing the party's alleged denial of funding. In a statement, the Congress said, The Congress President (Mallikarjun Kharge) has approved the candidature of Shri Jay Narayan Patnaik (In place of Smt. Sucharita Mohanty) as the party candidate for the ensuing general elections to the Lok Sabha from 17 - Puri Parliamentary Constituency of Odisha. Patnaik, who has been associated with the Congress for the past few years, will be making his electoral debut in this election. The last date for filing nominations in Puri is May 6.Mohanty, who stood second from Puri in the 2014 polls, returned her ticket on Saturday, expressing her inability to campaign in Puri without financial support from the party. In a letter to party general secretary KC Venugopal, Mohanty mentioned, Our campaign in the Puri Parliamentary constituency has been hit hard because the party has denied me funding. AICC Odisha in-charge Ajoy Kumar ji categorically asked me to fund for myself. I was a salaried professional journalist who entered electoral politics 10 years ago. I have given all I have into my campaign in Puri. Mohanty also stated, I tried a public donation drive to support my campaign for progressive politics without much success so far. I also tried to cut down the projected campaign spending to the minimum. She further mentioned that the party's central leadership did not respond to her repeated requests for funds.Puri is among the high-profile poll battles that will unfold in Odisha, with the BJP fielding its national spokesperson Sambit Patra for the second straight time and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's BJD fielding former Mumbai Police commissioner Arup Patnaik. The constituency, currently held by the Biju Janata Dal's (BJD) Pinaki Misra, votes in the sixth phase on May 25. In 2019, the Congress secured only 3.94 per cent of the votes in Puri. This was way down from 2014, when Mohanty's vote share was 18.5 per cent and she finished second.Like in 2019, the simultaneous elections in Odisha this time will be held in four phases, with the only difference this time being that the state will vote in the last four of the seven phases, unlike last time when it voted in the first four phases. During the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, BJD under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik won 12 of the 21 seats. The BJP won eight seats and Congress got one seat. The BJD swept the Odisha assembly polls in 2019, winning 112 seats. BJP won 23 seats and Congress nine seats. Headline Change: Rajnath Singh Expresses Concern over Former Pakistani Minister's Remarks on Rahul Gandhi, Demanding Explanation from Congress

Headline Change: Rajnath Singh Expresses Concern over Former Pakistani Minister's Remarks on Rahul Gandhi, Demanding Explanation from Congress Former Pakistani minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain's ''praise'' of Rahul Gandhi is a matter of ''grave concern'' and Congress must explain the ''deep love'' for its leader from a country that always attempted to destabilise India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said. In an interview to PTI on Saturday, Singh also questioned Congress' ''relationship'' with Pakistan ''There must be a reason behind this deep love (agadh prem) from a country that has been trying to destabilise India. It is a matter of grave concern and India wants to know the reason behind this love,'' he said. Chaudhry -- infamous for boasting about Pakistan's hand in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack -- had on May 1 posted on 'X' excerpts from a speech by Gandhi with the caption ''Rahul on fire'' that drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders. ''If a former minister of a country that has been attempting to destabilise India praises (Rahul), then it is a matter of concern. The Congress owes an explanation about its relationship with Pakistan,'' the defence minister said. Singh said the neighbouring country was attempting to influence the Indian elections. Asked if it is succeeding, Singh said Pakistan does not have the ''aukaat (capability)'' to influence. The former Pakistan minister on Saturday again complimented Gandhi for his party's promise of conducting a wealth redistribution survey, if it is voted to power. Redistributing wealth the way Congress wants to will destroy the economy and lead to uncontrollable inflation the way it happened in Venezuela, Singh said. In his comments, Chaudhry had also compared Gandhi with his great-grandfather and India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, saying ''both were socialists''. For receiving endorsement from Pakistan, Gandhi has also come under attack from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said on Thursday that Congress' ''partnership'' with Pakistan has been ''exposed'' and that the neighbouring country is impatient to make Gandhi the prime minister. Asked why the BJP is finding fault with Gandhi for Chaudhry's unsolicited comments, Singh said the Pakistani politician ''praised Rahul Gandhi by saying he is on fire. If such comments come from a foreign land, it is natural to have a reaction from a political party of BJP's stature.'' Gandhi or the Congress have made no attempt to distance themselves from this unwanted praise, Singh said. ''The praise came from someone who during his ministership had acknowledged that the Pakistan government had a hand in terror attacks in India,'' the defence minister said. Some three-and-half years ago, Chaudhry, who was then a minister, had made a sensational admission that Pakistan was responsible for the deadly Pulwama terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. ''Humne Hindustan ko ghus ke maara (We hit India in their home). Our success in Pulwama is a success of this nation under the leadership of Imran Khan. You and us are all part of that success,'' Chaudhry had said in the National Assembly during a debate. India's warplanes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in Balakot in Pakistan in February 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack. The defence minister also talked about how Pakistan has been relentlessly using terrorism to destabilise India and specifically mentioned the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai and the proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir. India has been maintaining that it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan while insisting that the onus is on Islamabad to create an environment free of terror and hostility for such engagement. New Delhi has been insisting that ''talks and terror'' cannot go hand-in-hand.

Ex-Pak minister's praise of Rahul matter of 'grave concern'; Cong owes explanation, says Rajnath

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistani minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain's praise of Rahul Gandhi is a matter of grave concern and the Congress must explain the 'deep love' for its leader from a country that always attempted to destabilise India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said. In an interview to PTI on Saturday, Singh also questioned the Congress' relationship with Pakistan. There must be a reason behind this deep love (agadh prem) from a country that has been trying to destabilise India. It is a matter of grave concern and India wants to know what is the reason behind this love, he said. Chaudhry, infamous for boasting about Pakistan's hand in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, had on May 1 posted on 'X' excerpts from a speech by Gandhi with the caption Rahul on fire that drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders. Rahul on fire . https://t.co/6pi1mL0bQN Ch Fawad Hussain (@fawadchaudhry) May 1, 2024 If a former minister of a country that has been attempting to destabilise India praises (Rahul), then it is a matter of concern. The Congress owes an explanation about its relationship with Pakistan, the defence minister said. Singh said the neighbouring country was attempting to influence the Indian elections. Asked if it is succeeding, Singh said Pakistan does not have the 'aukaat' (capability) to influence. Pakistani leaders praying for Congress; eager to make 'shehzada' next PM of India: PM Modi In his comments , Chaudhry had also compared Gandhi with his great-grandfather and India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, saying oth were socialists. For receiving endorsement from Pakistan, Gandhi has come under attack from Prime Minister Narendra Modi also, who said on Thursday that the Congress' partnership with Pakistan has been exposed and that the neighbouring country is impatient to make Gandhi the prime minister. Asked why the BJP is finding fault with Gandhi for Chaudhry's unsolicited comments, Singh said the Pakistani politician praised Rahul Gandhi by saying he is on fire. If such comments come from a foreign land, it is natural to have a reaction from a political party of the BJP's stature. Gandhi or the Congress have made no attempt to distance themselves from this unwanted praise, Singh said. The praise came from someone who during his ministership had acknowledged that the Pakistan government had a hand in terror attacks in India, the defence minister said. Some three-and-half years ago, Chaudhry, who was then a minister, had made a sensational admission that Pakistan was responsible for the deadly Pulwama terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. Hundreds of Bhatkal expats fly home to vote

BHATKAL/BENGALURU : Hundreds of people from Bhatkal, who are working in West Asia, are returning home just to exercise their franchise on May 7. This, it is said to be in response to the appeal by Bhatkal Tanzeem. It is learnt that the travel expenses of these voters are met by the Tanzeem. Taking a cue from Kerala, where a large number of residents who are working abroad, came down to vote, the Tanzeem has appealed to the people of Bhatkal, who are working abroad, to return home and exercise their franchise without fail. Bhatkal comes under the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency. BJP candidate Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said he was told that the Tanzeem pays the travel expenses of those who come to Bhatkal to vote. We are keeping a tab on it. If we find any such thing, we will complain to the Election Commission, he said. However, Inayathullah Shabandari, president of Majlise Islah Wa Tanzeem, Bhatkal, said the Tanzeem has no role in this. Many of them are coming to India now just to vote. They are coming on their own, bearing the expenses themselves. Most of them are rich. Only for those, who are not financially sound but are willing to come to vote, there are Tanzeems and Jamaats representing our people across West Asia. They have agreed to help them to an extent. We have branches of the Jamaat in Dubai, Mumbai and other places. It is in the interest of democracy, he told TNIE. We decided to appeal to our people after we saw Keralites working in West Asia participating in the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala in large numbers. About 40,000 people visited Kerala just to vote. We do not have such big numbers, ours will be in hundreds, he said. He said he is not sure how many will come and vote from West Asia. Around 15,000 people from Bhatkal are in Dubai, Jeddah, Qatar, Kuwait and other countries in West Asia. We hope at least 10% of them will come and vote, Inayathullah said.

BJP finds faults in Rohini Acharyas poll affidavit

PATNA : Rohini Acharya, the RJD nominee and daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, has found herself embroiled in controversy following objections raised by BJP leaders against her nomination filed with the returning officer for Bihars Saran Lok Sabha seat. Leading the objection is SD Sanjay, the in-charge of the BJP legal cell, who formally lodged complaints with the returning officer of the Saran Lok Sabha constituency and the Election Commission of India. They have urged the relevant authorities to scrutinize the documents thoroughly. In their complaints, BJP leaders alleged that Rohini Acharya misrepresented her income and movable assets in both her income tax return and affidavit. According to her affidavit, while Acharya claims to possess movable and immovable assets worth Rs 15.82 crore, her husband purportedly holds assets valued at Rs 19.86 crore. Additionally, Rohini declares having Rs 20 lakh in cash on hand, whereas her husband states possession of Rs 10 lakh. Rent is cited as the primary source of income in the affidavit. Sanjay, who also practices as an advocate at the Patna High Court, asserts that Acharya withheld crucial information in her affidavit, including her true address, nationality (as an NRI), and the source of income used to acquire a luxury flat worth Rs. 25 crore in Mumbai. Contrary to her declaration, Acharyas actual residence is in Singapore, not Kautilya Nagar, Patna. Her nomination papers were submitted on April 29, with her father, former railway minister Lalu Prasad.

Naxal activities to rise if Congress comes to power, says HM Amit Shah

AHMEDABAD : Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on his home states tour campaigning for party candidates. While addressing a public rally in Vansda of Valsad Lok Sabha constituency, Shah alleged, If Congress comes to power at Centre, Naxalite activities will increase in forest (tribal) area. For a peaceful environment and development of the tribal belt, you should vote for BJP and BJPs candidate Dhaval Patel. Vansda falls in Dangs district of South Gujarat; and is dominated by tribals. Earlier in the day, Shah addressed a public rally in Bodeli town of the Chhotaudepur district, which too is dominated by tribals. In the last 10 days, Shah has addressed three public rallies in tribal areas, the first was in Panchmahal district. On tribal development during the BJP, Shah exhorted people to vote for the party and candidate who can bring development in the tribal area, and eliminate naxalite and who can supply water to the last door of the village in the remotest place. Do you think they have any leader who can lead the country like PM Narendra Modi? Mocking the Congress and Rahul, Shah said satirically, Sonia Gandhi tried to launch, relaunch Rahul Gandhi a number of times, but she failed in all attempts. There are no problems for Congress candidates in Rai Bareli or Wayanad constituencies, the problem is with Rahul Gandhi, why should you vote for a person who is unfit to lead? During the BJP rule, he said, potable water supply has reached the remotest tribal belt like Kaprada, the Delhi-Mumbai Express Highway passes through Valsad, which will directly benefit tribals, the government has built 25 km banks along the seas-shore protecting tribals habitat along the southwest coast. Vote for a party that cares for you, said Shah. The BJP leader also labeled AAP as an urban Naxal party and cautioned that their victory in Valsad might trigger a resurgence of Naxalism. Shah denounced the Congress and AAP coalition, alleging that Rahul Gandhi misled tribal communities about vaccination, resulting in fatalities.

NEW DELHI: Amid allegations of being apprehended with 25 kg of gold smuggled from Dubai to Mumbai on April 25th, the lone female Afghan diplomat in India, Zakia Wardak, resigned from her position on Saturday. However, Afghanistans Consul General in Mumbai, Wardak, attributes her resignation to defamation and personal attacks. It is with great regret that I announce my decision to step down from my role at the consulate and Embassy of Afghanistan in Mumbai, effective May 5th, said Wardak on Saturday. In her resignation, Wardak mentioned facing personal attacks over the past year aimed at her, her family, and even extended relatives. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) apprehended the 58-year-old Wardak on April 25th after she disembarked from an Emirates flight from Dubai. She, along with her son-in-law, crossed the green channel and was close to the exit when stopped. Wardak was reportedly subjected to a physical check, during which the gold bars were discovered concealed in her customised jacket, leggings, knee caps, and waist belt. The gold was worth Rs 18.6 crore. In her resignation, Wardak stated that the personal attacks prevented her from effectively carrying out her work. It has demonstrated the challenges faced by women in Afghan society who strive to modernize and bring about positive changes amidst ongoing propaganda campaigns. Wardak further stated that the persistent and coordinated nature of the attacks aimed at defaming her had surpassed a tolerable threshold. It had become increasingly clear that the public narrative unfairly targeted the only female representative within this system, rather than focusing on constructive assistance and support, said Wardak.
