Triple Murder Shock in Madhya Pradesh: Shahnawaz Khan Allegedly Kills Sister-in-law and Nieces
Rewa: A shocking case of triple murder surfaced on May 4th (Saturday) in the Govindgarh police station area of Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh. Shahnawaz Khan is accused of killing his 25-year-old sister-in-law Hasina Khan and her two nieces, 2-year-old Alia and 3-year-old Anabiya. After committing the murders, Shahnawaz dumped the bodies of the children in a nearby pond. Upon receiving information about the crime, a police team led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) rushed to the spot and initiated a search for the bodies with the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local divers. The accused has been arrested and is currently under interrogation. The triple murder, which occurred in ward number three near Idgah, has sparked widespread concern. The deceased woman's husband resides and works in Visakhapatnam, while she stayed with her in-laws. The accused reportedly had a minor altercation with his sister-in-law, resulting in him striking her with a steel rod and then stabbing her with a knife. When her daughters witnessed the murder, he proceeded to attack them to cover up his crime. Shahnawaz left Hasinas body, covered in blood, in the house, while he stuffed the bodies of his nieces into a sack and disposed of them in the pond. The rest of the family members were not present at home during the murders, as they had gone to Jabalpur (Gurh as per some reports) to attend a wedding ceremony. Seizing the opportunity, Shahnawaz committed the heinous act. The police team, accompanied by Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Singh and Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anil Sonkar, recovered the bodies and initiated their investigation. The authorities continued to search the pond for the remains of the two girls. According to Anil Sonkar, Shahnawaz and his sister-in-law Hasina had a fight late on Saturday night. Enraged, he strangled her to death after hitting her head with a steel rod. Hasina Khan lived with her children, mother-in-law, and two brother-in-laws in ward number 3 of Govindgarh town, while her husband is employed outside. Hasinas elder brother-in-law had gone to Jabalpur for a wedding with her mother, and the younger brother-in-law Shahnawaz Khan was at home. There was a dispute between the brother-in-law and the sister-in-law on Saturday evening. The brother-in-law used a steel rod to hit Hasina in the head during this altercation. He then used a knife to cut her throat, said Sonkar. The police added, Hasinas two daughters, who were present, started crying when they saw what had happened. Subsequently, the perpetrator also murdered them and disposed of their corpses in the pond. He is being questioned by police after being brought into custody. Divers are assisting the police team in their hunt for the girls bodies. The conflict between the brother-in-law and the sister-in-law is being ascertained. Slowing global economy to mean smaller revenue bump in Australian budget Global economic weakness and a slowing domestic economy were among the reasons Australia will report a smaller revenue increase in its federal budget for the year ended June 30 compared to recent years, the government said on Sunday. The Labor government is expected to report a budget surplus on May 14, although it flagged in March a revenue upgrade would be smaller than the year before as commodity prices fell and the labour market softened. On Sunday, it said tax receipt upgrades in the budget, excluding those from goods and services tax, were expected to be more than A$100 billion ($66.08 billion) below the A$129 billion average upgrade in the last three budgets. The anticipated result was because of weakness in the global economy, a slower domestic economy, a softening labour market and lower commodity prices, it said. We are realistic about the challenges facing our economy and our budget this includes not expecting the same sorts of massive revenue upgrades that weve seen in recent budget updates to continue, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said in a statement. Chalmers has previously pointed to weaker commodity prices, in particular for major export iron ore, and rising unemployment as key drivers for the change. Bangalore: A man named Saddam Hussain has been arrested for raping a Dalit minor girl in Hubli Navanagar, Dharwad, Karnataka. A case is being prosecuted against him under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act) Act. On Friday (May 3, 2024), he attacked two policemen with a knife in Sutagatti area and tried to escape from police custody. Under compulsion, the police also had to open fire, which hit his leg. 19-year-old Saddam Hussain is accused of not only raping a Dalit minor girl studying in his own class, but also made her pregnant. He then injured Dharwad Vidyagiri police inspector Sangamesh Bidiginal while trying to escape from the custody of Nawanagar police. Apart from him, he also attacked another constable. As soon as he swung the knife, the police fired one shot in the air and one towards his leg. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajiv M gave this information. Shreeram Bagla, Managing Director of city-based snacks major Annapurna Swadisht, highlighted that rural demand for the FMCG sector as a whole had been slightly subdued during the second and third quarters of the 2023-24 fiscal. ''We are expecting a steady recovery in demand in the rural and semi-urban markets in the wake of higher spending on election-related expenses. The government seems to be laying a major thrust on boosting the rural economy. This is likely to spur consumption in villages, thereby shoring up the demand for FMCG products,'' Bagla noted. Emami Ltd, another FMCG major with considerable rural dependence, also expressed a positive outlook. ''We expect the economy to bounce back on multiple counts in the backdrop of the election. First, anticipation of a good monsoon is expected to boost the rural economy. Secondly, with the softening of raw material prices, while companies are gearing up to pass on the benefits to the consumers, they will also invest more in brand building. The combination of these will definitely push the demand for the FMCG sector up,'' Emami Wholetime Director & Vice Chairman, Mohan Goenka, told PTI. Amnish Aggarwal, head of Institutional Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, while offering a nuanced perspective, pointed out that in present circumstances election spending may not be boosting rural demand in the manner it did before. Reflecting on the trends observed in past elections, Aggarwal underscored that the correlation between poll expenditure translating into a surge in rural demand is over-hyped in current times due to cash movement restrictions which are imposed with the model code of conduct. ''This direct correlation was perhaps true a decade or more ago. Factors like the anticipation of a good monsoon and inflation play pivotal roles in shaping consumer behaviour in current times compared to cash flow during polls,'' he said. Political parties, though, acknowledged that demand for vehicles goes up during poll seasons, whether sourced from rentals or new purchases for use in election activities. Automobile sales in March this year were up by 10 per cent over last year, totalling 3.7 lakh vehicles. However, a senior official of a major car company said that on account of model code of conduct-related restrictions, overall sales of both passenger and commercial vehicles were subdued in April. Grassroots-level workers of political parties said that there has been a high purchase of snacks and beverages and certain FMCG items required for workers. FMCG products are also used as freebies for audiences brought to political rallies, they said. A shopkeeper in Hooghly district stated, ''Local political leaders become more generous during election times, and we sell more.'' West Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer confirmed that since the commencement of MCC, freebies worth Rs 57.67 crore have been seized from the state.

Prioritise your hobbies like your meetings
Every single evening, I spend time hunched over my illustrated journal, drawing pictures that capture the highlights of my day. Yesterday, my house-help said Why do you do this? Do you get money, like when you write your books? I replied that nobody paid me to draw. She couldnt understand why I did it then. Its a lot of work for no money, she commented. Indians are known for their strong work ethics globally. Studies show that India ranks seventh in the list of countries with the longest working hours, with an average of 47.7 working hours per week for an employed person. Presuming a five-day week, that is nearly nine-and-a-half hours at work. Add to that, the time taken to commute to work, a few hours for cooking, some time for exercise, family commitments and sleep, which leaves very little time for activities that one is not monetarily compensated for. When I spoke to people with flourishing careers, most admitted to having absolutely no time for their hobbies. Even on weekends, we are time-starved as the weekends are often reserved for chores and ferrying our children to various classes. The leisure time that escapes this routine, gets gobbled up by the ever-present smartphone. Wearily we succumb to the seduction, collapsing on the sofa and scrolling away. Countless studies show that hobbies not only relieve stress and improve our mental health, but also give us a sense of purpose. Apart from this, they are huge dopamine reservoirs. They make us feel good because of the sense of achievement we experience as we get better and more creative. The pandemic saw several people who became so good with their hobbies that they quit their lucrative jobs to pursue full-time what they love doing. Many of them ended up making even more money. Most of us were good at something in school and college, but as life got busier the first thing that took a hit was the non-paying things we did. We must make time for our hobbiesprioritising it just like we prioritise our meetings. What if workplaces had an hour or two each Friday, where the employees must compulsorily bring in their hobbies to work? Imagine a corporate boardroom with people sitting around, chatting and laughing as they indulged in their hobby. Wouldnt this lead to team bonding, happier and more creative employees at the workplace? It would also tremendously reduce work related stress, build a strong loyalty to the organisation, resulting in reduced attrition rates. Perhaps I could explain then to my house-help how pursuing a hobby was important work. Doing something for the sheer joy of it, is a luxury she cannot afford. Equality before the law is a myth, except for the politically ambitious
A person accused of a crime, when acquitted, should, under normal circumstances, feel relieved and absolved of all taints. But we live in abnormal times where the person accused of committing a crime can be apprehended on mere suspicion, and the trial drag on for decades, and all this while the incarcerated is condemned to live in judicial custody. The long years spent in detention often are more than the maximum number of years that could have been imposed as punishment. There are many distressing issues. While convicted gangster-politicians like Mukhtar Ansari/Atiq Ahmed, Shahabuddin and their Hindu counterparts have no difficulty running their empires from behind the bars, it is the other offenders who are left to suffer slow deaths with no hope of release on even medical bail. Godmen and gurus flout manmade laws with impunity and even when faced with serious charges of contempt of the Supreme Court keep thumbing their noses. Baba Ramdevs apology is just one such case. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singhs political heavy weight facilitates his frequent release on furloughs, paroles, bail on medical grounds, etc. What is ironic is that the same politicians who rant about getting rid of colonial vestiges like the IPC, are happy to retain the provisions of CrPC and the jail manual that can mitigate the discomfort of the jailhouse for their protgs. Remissions for good conduct certified by authorities concerned is again a loophole selectively used in a partisan manner. We are told repeatedly that some white-collar crimes are more heinous than rape and murder of infants, burning children who dare to marry intercaste or running over protesting farmers to break the morale of peaceful protestors. The definition of rarest of rare crimes that shock the conscience of the community has changed beyond comprehension. Money laundering and defrauding banks are no doubt serious offences, but to use this red flag to airbrush out of sight and legal oversight makes no sense at all. The investigative agencies and departments charged with enforcement abuse ill-drafted laws to run rampant ravaging the rule of law at the command of their masters. It must be made absolutely clear that the rot had started before the Modi Wave swept all Opposition out of the way. The Preventive Detention Act was routinely opposed by the Congress governments before the Emergency. The Defence of India Rules were there years before the MISA. It was the mild-mannered soft-spoken Dr Manmohan Singh who had declared war on the Naxalite and Maoists and labelled them as the greatest threat to Indias security. Encounters real and fake mushroomed as Improvised Extra Judicial Executions. Draconian laws passed by all governments have turned jurisprudence upside down. Saddest development is the betrayal by some politically ambitious judges to guard the constitutionally guaranteed liberties and rights. National and public interest as defined by those in power has shaken peoples belief that crimes violating their life and liberty will not go unpunished. This is what has given rise to vigilantes, lynchings and feudal casteist kangaroo courts harking back to the dark ages. Manmade laws versus Laws of God revealed as commandments have generated heated debates in lands where Abrahamic religions are professed. We have forgotten about crimes against humanity and war crimes, but are increasingly agitated about blasphemy as crime in a secular state. Many learned judges are seriously worried about unspeakable crimes against nature. While the rich and the powerful have legally sanctioned privileges and immunities, the poor and the powerless now have the burden to prove their innocence. In days gone by, the jurists had listed a whole set of frightening ordeals by fire, water, poison and stake. When the present CJI, whom the writer of these lines greatly admires as one who has never shied of talking to power, expresses admiration for legal reforms such as the Nyay Samhita that will free us from colonial fetters, the confusion is compounded. If dharmashastras and smritis of yore are going to replace the existing foundations of laws of the land then we must tread carefully and slowly. Its a sobering thought that our Constitution is also a creature of legislation during the colonial period. It is easy to blame the lower judiciary, wardens in jails and ill-paid cops. Violating the basic principles of natural justice by a sitting CJI who chose to be a judge in his own cause shocked everyone and caused serious damage to the institutions image he headed. There has been no dearth of politically ambitious policemen and judges who have made a mockery of the separation of powers and majesty of law. Maybe equality before law was always a myth. The poor and the powerless knew that to endure years of expensive litigation, legs of steel and hands of sterling silver were needed. Sorry state of school mathematics
Some years ago, during a private conversation, the education minister of a western country urged me to help her school-going daughter overcome her phobia of mathematics. Her request brought home the stark truth that the teaching of mathematics at the level of schools is not in good shape. My own memories of learning mathematics are not very edifying. Of course, exceptions occurred when I had two very fine teachers in grades 8 and 9, respectively. But the rest of my school years were rather disappointing. Do I stand isolated with such memories? The answer is resoundingly in the negative. Why has such a situation prevailed with such consistency for so long in so many parts of the globe? I have, over the years, conducted many experiments to try and figure out why. I have tried to find ways to help rectify the problem. The biggest stumbling block is the fact that most teachers of mathematics are rather clueless about the pedagogy to be adopted and the content to be chosen. This results in unimaginative teaching methods that rely on rote learning and heavy use of the blackboard. Contrary to the commonly held belief, mathematics is one of the most transdisciplinary of subjects and it permeates every level of human endeavour. This should provide more than ample advantages and opportunities to our teachers to make the learning interesting. Let us take the subject of the theorem of Pythagoras. Most teachers are unaware of the rich history of this theorem and how it connects with so many real-world matters. The theorem was known in many cultures and civilisations much before the time of Pythagoras. In India, there is documented evidence in several Sulba Sutras of the fact that the theorem was known with different methods of proof hundreds of years before the time of Pythagoras. More importantly, the theorem arose out of architectural needs of society. I am also aware that up until a few decades ago, in rural India, the theorem was used to demarcate agricultural fields in the shape of accurate rectangles. What is not so well known is that Pythagoras visited India. I have come across hard documentary evidence through Greek and European sources as also Indian sources of the visit. He was much influenced by Indian philosophy and particularly by Jainism. So much so that he became a vegetarian, stopped wearing leather garments and footwear and would have his supper before sundown. What also pains me is the fact that the theorem can be applied through a very easy and interesting experiment to calculate the circumference of the Earth. Yet I have not come across a single schoolteacher in India who practices any of the above. One other lacuna that most school learning programmes seem to make is to compel the entire class to learn in a uniform manner. It is so important to not make this error. It is important to understand that students learn best by doing practical things with which they can relate to real-life situations. Gandhiji and almost every major educator has emphasised that in the context of teaching less is more and what you do with your hands enters your heart. I have brought about much learning of arithmetic through games like treasure hunts. Here the clues require arithmetical thinking and calculations. The students have participated in teams, and they teach each other as well as enjoy the process of discovery. With some degree of patience and freedom to experiment much learning happens that gradually leads to conceptual understanding and creative thinking. I know that teachers complain about lack of time but all they need to do is to teach a few important and pivotal concepts instead of mechanically teaching everything. The new dawn needs to redeem deemed
During a casual conversation with a foreign university partner in North America, the Dean of its engineering school quizzed: When will deemed universities become universities? I was uncomfortably explaining the policy trajectory of deemed universities which is still undergoing a bumpy ride ever since its conceptual inception. After my explanation, he felt he was better off not asking the question. Here is why. The First Education Commission report of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1948-49) recommended that the government should evolve a method of creating university charters similar to many countries, where universities are set up not through acts of legislature but through charters granted by the head of the state. This course may also be adopted in our country, at any rate, with regard to the new universities, which are established by the conversion of existing institutions. Thus was born the concept of deemed university under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The deemed university avatar had reincarnations midwifed by various policies all of them failing to put to rest the deeming fiction which should have been phased out by now as envisaged by the Radhakrishnan Commission report. The Sankalp Patra of PM Modi which is a political gnanis social GYAN (Garib, Yuva, Annadata and Nari) is a good start for early relief to the deemed universities conundrum which has enough legal ammunition to trigger the policy solution. A Constitution bench of the Supreme Court in Azeez Basha vs Union of India (1968) in an issue concerning Aligarh Muslim University defined the word established in so far as universities are concerned along with the need to establish university under a central/state law. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court in Premchand Jain vs RK Chabra (1984) rightly left it to the central government to interpret or amend, if necessary Section 23 of the UGC Act that can allow deemed universities to use the word university. Armed with this SC order, the union government in its best wisdom constituted a committee and permitted deemed universities to use the word university in the year 2006. Unfortunately, a two-judge bench of the SC in Orissa Lift Irrigation Corp. Ltd. vs Sri Rabi Sankar Patro (2017), while considering a completely different issue concerning four deemed universities, ordered that all 120 deemed universities to not use the word university resulting to this present terminological confusion. The interpreter of law allows the interpreter to inquire not into the subjective intent of the author, but rather the intent the author would have had, had he or she acted reasonably. This spirit of purposive construction highlighted by Aharon Barak in Purposive Interpretation in Law, (2007) was appreciated by the Supreme Court in New India Assurance Co. Ltd. vs Nusli Neville Wadia, (2008). The principles of Casus Omissus was appreciated by SC in UCO Bank vs Rajinder Lal Capoor (2008), which as per GP Singhs Interpretation of Statutes, is an application of the general principle that a matter which should have been, but has not been provided for in a statute cannot be supplied by courts, as doing so will be legislation and not construction. Reading the above two along with the SCs 1968 interpretation of the word established along with Section 22 and 23 of the UGC Act, it is by harmonious construct that an institution which once was not empowered to award degrees is empowered to do so by the central government under a central Act (UGC Act, in the case of deemed universities), its degrees are recognised for all practical purposes and should be treated as a regular university only. It is in this operational spirit that many progressive deemed universities built an ecosystem garnering academic repute and excellence. Private deemed universities continuously dominate the NIRF university rankings every year with almost 33 per cent in the top 100 of the recent NIRF 2023, marching ahead of many central and state universities. This being the case, the comity of deemed universities eagerly awaits redistribution and inheritance of a different type. The much-needed autonomy that still seems to be the exclusive privilege of the central and state universities needs to be redistributed bountifully to all deemed universities who are capable of inheriting best practices of not only better-ranked central/state university peers, but also reputed foreign universities. The autonomy provided to private un-aided institution by the Supreme Court in TMA Pai Foundation Case still holds the ground and the new dawns Sankalp Patra hopefully shall redeem the deemed. ''It is the worst manifesto which is not in the interest of the nation,'' Sitharaman said. Speaking at a meeting with select journalists in Pune, the finance minister wondered whether the Congress has conducted the necessary financial planning to fulfil the assurances listed in its manifesto. ''I know they are not coming to power, but I would still like to ask, even if the subject of the Congress manifesto were to be implemented, has the Congress done the homework on the expenditure required to fulfil the promises listed in the manifesto?'' she asked. Citing the case of Congress-ruled Karnataka, Sitharaman said they (Congress) attempted to implement the promises made during the state polls despite knowing that they had no funds. ''The deputy chief minister (of Karnataka) publicly acknowledged that they were left with no funds for development as the money was spent on fulfilling five promises made during elections,'' she said. ''This is just about one state. If similar measures (in Congress' poll manifesto) were to be implemented across the country, the economy, currently ranked among the top five globally and projected to rise to the third position in the next couple of years, would regress into the 'fragile five','' the finance minister said. It is the BJP's duty towards the nation to question the poll document of the Congress. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused the Congress of planning to redistribute peoples property if it is voted to power. On its part, the Congress has accused the PM of resorting to ''lies'' and diverting people's attention from the real issues. Responding to a query, Sitharaman said it is the BJP which has set the agenda for the elections. ''Our response to the Congress' manifesto is neither defensive nor negative, rather it is more offensive and substantive,'' she said. The manifesto is more akin to a Muslim League document, and if not, the Congress should stand up and counter this observation (of BJP), Sitharaman said. Referring to the criticism that BJP is spreading misinformation about Congress's manifesto, Sitharaman said, ''What is wrong? We are asking questions. (The manifesto) is the fundamental point of departure from the Congress's ideology, if there was one''. According to Sitharaman, there is a consistency in the way the opposition is prioritising wealth and its rights on the wealth. ''The Congress is saying something in the manifesto. It is saying something more to supplement it during public rallies,'' Sitharaman said when asked why PM Modi is raising the issue of the redistribution of wealth on religious lines. She said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has repeated this point (conducting caste census) when he spoke about doing the 'x-ray' of the society. ''One can say that Congress did not mean it (redistribution of wealth) but they say they mean it. When PM Modi asked about it...he asked because he saw the trend....he saw the written word and also the spoken word. So he is saying that this is what they are going to do,'' Sitharaman added.

Jhansi: A shocking incident occurred on April 29 when Mohammad Arshad, 28, gave triple talaq to his wife, Afsana, 26, on a moving train near Jhansi Junction and then fled the scene.As the train reached Jhansi station, Arshad pronounced triple talaq to his wife, beat her, and then got off the train. Stunned by the sudden turn of events, Afsana contacted the Government Railway Police, who sent her back to Pukhrayan in Kanpur Dehat, her initial boarding point for Bhopal that day.
