IPL 2024: We Are Still In The Playoffs Race, Says PBKS Pacer Harshal Patel After CSK Defeat

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association: Punjab Kings went down by 28 runs against the five-time winner Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League encounter here on Sunday. However, speedster Harshal Patel feels they are still in the race for the playoff spots. After electing to bowl, Punjab restricted CSK to 167/9 thanks to superb spells by Rahul Chahar and Harshal Patel at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium here. While the leg-spinner recorded figures of 3-23 in his 4 overs at an economy rate of 5.8, Harshal gave away just 24 runs and picked 3 wickets as well in his 4 overs, maintaining an economy rate of 6. But despite the spectacular bowling performance, Punjab fell short of the target and was unable to get their third win in a row. Despite the result, Harshal maintained that the side still had a chance of making it to the playoffs. We just need to play good cricket. In terms of the playoff race, in 13 years of playing IPL, I have never seen a team out of the playoffs race or qualified before 13-14 games are done. We are still in the race and as a team, we know when we play high-quality cricket and everyone knows their job well, we know we can beat any team on any ground, the right-arm fast bowler said in the post-match press conference. The stand-in skipper Sam Curran also praised the bowling unit after the match and said that it was a tough batting pitch. Thought we bowled really well. Rahul Chahar and Harshal were amazing, I was pretty happy at the halfway point but unfortunately, it was not meant to be. The wicket was probably slower than we thought, we expected a little more pace and bounce, it was pretty similar throughout the game, Curran said in the post-match presentation ceremony. Punjab lost two early wickets, with the in-form Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw getting out within the first two overs. But Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh kept their hopes alive with a solid 53-run partnership. I think with that opening spell, we were still in the game when Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh were batting. Even though we lost two early wickets, we recovered with Prabhsimran and Shashank in the middle during the powerplay. I think we were quite settled at that point. If we had made better choices on which bowlers to target, we could have a different conclusion to the game, the 33-year-old said. Punjab will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the same venue under the lights, and Harshal opened up on the learnings for his side ahead of the crucial next game. I think coming into this game, we thought that this would be a high-scoring venue because of the size of the boundary. Usually, this pitch has a lot of pace and bounce. But it was not like that, especially today. The next game we play will be a night game. So, it might be a little different and we might see 30-40 more runs on the surface. The lessons we have learned is that if we bowl hard length, close to the stumps, and keep stumps in play at all times, there is enough reward for bowlers and shot-making is difficult from that length, he said. Meanwhile, Rs 40 lakh was raised during the match in Dharamsala on Sunday to support girl child education. The M3M Foundation, in partnership with Shikhar Dhawan Foundation, has committed support to females for vocational education, and Rs 5 Lakh will be donated for every 25 runs scored and 3 wickets taken by Punjab Kings during their home games. Through the initiative, the organisation aims to provide vocational education support to 111 girls for up to Rs. 5 lakh, covering a total amount of Rs. 5.55 crore over the next five years. Punjab Kings will next face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday (May 9).

IPL 2024: Thought We Were 15-20 Runs Short But Did Not Bowl Loose Balls In Powerplay And Middle Overs, Says Jadeja

Indian Premier League: Ravindra Jadeja, who hit an unbeaten 43 with the bat and took 3-20 in a decisive middle-overs spell in Chennai Super Kings 28-run win over Punjab Kings, said the side felt they were 15-20 runs short at the halfway stage. But he added that not bowling loose deliveries in Power-play and middle overs was crucial in the sides win at HPCA Stadium on Sunday afternoon. We thought we were 15-20 runs short but we did not bowl loose balls in the powerplay and the middle overs. My role as a batter is to build partnerships and then play the big shots towards the end. Sometimes, when we lose wickets in the Powerplay, we do not get momentum. In the matches we win, we play all phases well. We had a good powerplay but did not get partnerships in the middle overs. I was trying to build a good partnership to then tee off at the end, said Jadeja, the Player of the Match, to broadcasters after the match ended. Apart from him, Simarjeet Singh and Tushar Deshpande returned with figures of 2-16 and 2-35 respectively to derail PBKS chase. Mitchell Santner and Shardul Thakur also took a wicket each to ensure CSK got back into the top four of the points table despite being hit by injuries in their bowling line-up. It was a day game, so the wicket was slow. As usual, it was expected because it was so hot. The fast bowlers bowled well in the powerplay. Tushar got two important wickets and then Mitch and I did the job in the middle overs. It (the pitch) always seems flat in the powerplay. But when the ball gets old, the ball does not always come on. When playing at a new venue, you don't know how much it will turn or stop, added Jadeja. Fast-bowler Deshpande had missed Wednesdays game against PBKS due to flu but became fit for Sundays match and made an instant impact by castling Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw in the same over. Very happy today because it was a low-scoring game. This was the game we wanted to win badly. I tried my best to play the last game but couldn't (due to illness). It was in my mind that I wanted to give my best. It was a crunch game. At high altitude, the ball does something and my job was to take wickets. (On the pitch) It was a bit slow if we bowled into the pitch. We knew if we hit those lengths, it was tough to play horizontal shots, he said. Defending champions CSK, with 12 points from 11 games, will now travel to Ahmedabad to play against ninth-placed Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on May 10.

IPL 2024: Jadeja Stars With 43*, Three-fer As CSK Jump To Third Place With 28-run Win Over PBKS (ld)

Chennai Super Kings: Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja stood tall when it mattered the most for Chennai Super Kings by hitting an unbeaten 43 and taking 3-20 in a decisive middle-overs spell as the defending champions jumped to third place in the points table after beating Punjab Kings by 28 runs at the HPCA Stadium here on Sunday afternoon. In the start, CSK were restricted to 167/9, thanks to three-fers from Rahul Chahar and Harshal Patel. PBKS were on course to chase down the total by reaching 62/2 in 7.5 overs. But they suffered a batting meltdown to be reduced to 90/8 and eventually ended up with 139/9. Jadejas spell turned the game on its head, while Simarjeet Singh and Tushar Deshpande returned with figures of 2-16 and 2-35 respectively to derail PBKS chase. Mitchell Santner and Shardul Thakur also took a wicket each to ensure CSK, despite being hit by injuries in their bowling line-up, got back into the top four of the points table. On a slightly two-paced pitch, CSK were cruising at 69/1 in seven overs and seemed to be on course for a 200-plus score. But Chahars 3-23, including two wickets in the eighth over, and Harshals 3-24 ensured CSK fell way short of an imposing total, despite Jadejas 43 not out off 26 balls. CSK were dealt an early blow when Ajinkya Rahane looked to flick off Arshdeep Singh but hit straight to mid-wicket. Daryl Mitchell began by pulling and lofting with panache to collect four and six respectively off Arshdeep. Ruturaj Gaikwad cut loose in the last over of the Power-play by smashing three fours to take 19 runs off Harpreet Brar as CSK finished the Power-play at 60/1. But Chahar applied the brakes on CSKs run-scoring by taking out Gaikwad and Shivam Dube on successive deliveries - both nicking behind to keeper. Harshal landed another huge blow to CSK by trapping Mitchell lbw with a nip-backer keeping low. Mitchell went for the review immediately, but replays showed the ball clipping leg-stump. Jadeja and Moeen Ali hit two fours each before the latter top-edged a pull to a short fine leg off a back-of-the-hand slower delivery from Sam Curran. Chahar got his third wicket when Santner holed out to long-on. Shardul Thakur hit two fours and a six off Curran and Chahar, followed by Jadeja slog-sweeping the latter for six to get quick runs at the end for CSK. But Harshal had other ideas -- castling Thakur and M.S. Dhoni on successive deliveries with slower off-cutters. Jadeja hit Arshdeep for four and six on the first three balls of the final over, before the fast-bowler took the batter out with a slower knuckle ball outside the off-stump and miscued a pull to long-on, as CSK ended three runs short of 170. CSK had a bright start to their defense of 168 when Deshpande castled Jonny Bairstow with a straighter delivery and followed it up by beating Rilee Rossouw for pace to knock over his stumps. Both of his dismissals came on length balls and seam movement aiding him to make the double-strike. Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh hit eight boundaries between themselves before Santner pulled his length back a little bit to have the latter hole out to long-on. That triggered a batting implosion for PBKS as Prabhsimran holed out to extra cover off Jadeja and Jitesh Sharma nicked behind off impact player Simarjeet. Though Ashutosh Sharma was dropped early on, he was hit twice on the body by Simarjeet. The pressure built by CSK gave them rewards when Jadeja had Sam Curran holing out to long-on and Ashutosh gave a catch to short third man. Simarjeets persistence paid off when Harshal miscued a pull to mid-wicket, as PBKS were reduced to 90/8. Chahar and Brar tried to delay the inevitable by hitting five boundaries collectively before Thakur hit the formers off-stump while going for a scoop. The pacer gave away just seven runs in the final over to ensure CSK got a vital win to be in contention for the playoffs. Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 167/9 in 20 overs (Ravindra Jadeja 43, Ruturaj Gaikwad 32; Rahul Chahar 3-23, Harshal Patel 3-24) beat Punjab Kings 133/9 in 20 overs (Prabhsimran Singh 30, Shashank Singh 27; Ravindra Jadeja 3-20, Simarjeet Singh 2-16) by 28 runs

IPL 2024: Bottom-dweller Mumbai Indians Play To Revive Campaign, Restore Pride Against SRH

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium: Plumbing the depths of the points table in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the only direction Mumbai Indians can now go is climb up the standings when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 55 at the Wankhede Stadium here on Monday. Considering the way their campaign has unfolded so far, getting things their way seems as good as impossible for Hardik Pandya's side as they have suffered defeats in eight of the 11 matches they have played so far this season. They have failed to stitch together a complete performance in most of their matches, losing games after excelling in one department of the match. Like in their clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday (May 3) when they bundled out the visitors for 169 as their bowlers used the double-paced wicket to their advantage to restrict them. Jasprit Bumrah and Nuwan Thushara claimed three wickets apiece while Hardik Pandya bagged 2-44. With Thushara striking three early blows, KKR were reduced to 57/5 but Mumbai Indians allowed them to recover from there, bringing in spinners Naman Dhir and Piyush Chawla instead of pressing on with the pacers. Venkatesh Iyer scored a valiant 52-ball 70 and shared an 83-run partnership with Manish Pandey (42) as they rescued Kolkata Knight Riders. Chasing 170, Mumbai Indians lost the plot as batters like Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, and Nehal Wadhera got out cheaply. Suryakumar Yadav waged a lone battle, scoring 56 off 35 balls, and hitting a flurry of shots as he tried to lift them from a precarious 71/6. His wicket and the one of Tim David triggered another collapse as Andre Russell and Mitchell Starc shared five wickets between them to hasten the demise of their hopes. Starc claimed three wickets in the 19th over for a final haul of 4-33 as KKR won by 24 runs for their first victory at the Wankhede Stadium in 12 years. Agreed that the wicket was two-paced but it was also true that some of the MI batters were out to full tosses. With six points from 11 matches, Mumbai Indians will hope to win their remaining three matches and salvage their pride even if other results do not go in their favour and help them make it to the Playoffs. Mumbai Indians are going into the match with four successive defeats and considering their up-and-down form, Hardik Pandya's team will have to pull up their socks to restore some pride. Meanwhile, their opponents for Monday's clash, Sunrisers Hyderabad have everything to play for as they are placed fourth in the standings and still in the running for the playoffs spots. SRH have 12 points from six wins in 10 matches and are placed fourth in the points table, clubbed together with Lucknow Super Giants behind Rajasthan Royals (16) and Kolkata Knight Riders (14). SRH need to win their remaining four matches as the race for the playoffs spots is going to be neck-and-neck. The good thing for them is that they have recovered after two successive defeats against Southern rivals Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. They travel to Mumbai after a victory over table-toppers Rajasthan Royals. After four successive wins starting with a six-wicket win over defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Under the leadership of Pat Cummins, SRH have done well so far in the league with openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in great form and the likes of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram complimenting their efforts with superb batting when needed. Reddy has been their find of the season and had struck a 42-ball unbeaten 76 in their last match while Travis Head blasted 58 off 44 balls while Klaasen smashed a 19-ball 42. For them, Travis Head (396), Klaasen (337) and Abhishek Sharma (315) were their top scorers. T. Natarajan and Pat Cummins are their most successful bowlers so far with 15 and 12 respectively. Bhuvneshwar and Jaydev Undakat have claimed eight wickets apiece. Going by the last match played there, the pitch is likely to offer some assistance to the bowlers and considering their strength in this department, the force would be with SRH in Monday's clash. Overall, Mumbai Indians have dominated the head-to-head series, winning 12 out of the 21 matches played between them while SRH have won nine. SRH had defeated Mumbai Indians by 31 runs in a high-scoring clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on March 27, scoring 277/3 batting first with Klaasen hammering an unbeaten 80 while Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma scoring 62 and 63 respectively. They then restricted MI to 246/5 with Tilak Varma anchoring the innings with 64. Squads: Mumbai Indians: Ishan Kishan(w), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Nehal Wadhera, Tim David, Mohammad Nabi, Piyush Chawla, Luke Wood, Jasprit Bumrah, Nuwan Thushara, Naman Dhir, Shams Mulani, Dewald Brevis, Kumar Kartikeya, Shreyas Gopal, Harvik Desai, Gerald Coetzee, Romario Shepherd, Arjun Tendulkar, Shivalik Sharma, Anshul Kamboj, Akash Madhwal, Kwena Maphaka Sunrisers Hyderabad: Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen(w), Nitish Reddy, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins(c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, T Natarajan, Anmolpreet Singh, Washington Sundar, Glenn Phillips, Umran Malik, Mayank Markande, Rahul Tripathi, Mayank Agarwal, Upendra Yadav, Jhatavedh Subramanyan, Sanvir Singh, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, Akash Maharaj Singh. IPL 2024: Clinical Bowlers Help CSK Jump To Third Place With 28-run Win Over PBKS

IPL 2024: Jadeja shines bright in Dharamsala to keep Super Kings on track

CHENNAI: All-round Ravindra Jadeja (43 runs from 26 balls and 3/20) helped Chennai Super Kings beat Punjab Kings by 28 runs at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala on Sunday. Chasing 168, Punjab were off to a horror start. Tushar Deshpande struck not once but twice to send both Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw packing. First, an inswinger to the right-hander and then an outswinger to Rossouw meant two clean bowled reduced PBKS to 9/2. However, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh came out all guns blazing. They hit 15 runs off Richard Gleeson and followed it up with another 16-run over against Deshpande. Things took a turn when Mitch Santner was brought back. The New Zealander removed Shashank for 27 runs from 20 balls and Jadeja piled on with the wicket of Prabhsimran. Simranjeet Singh added to Punjab's misery as Jitesh Sharma's poor form continued. Punjab were 72/5 at the halfway mark. They had pinned all the hopes on Sam Curran and Ashutosh Sharma, but Jadeja sent back both the batters in the same over. It was only a matter of time from there as Punjab scrapped their way to 139/9 in 20 overs. Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane's poor form continued as he fell in the second over for nine runs. Joined by Daryl Mitchell, Ruturaj Gaikwad kept the innings going. Gaikwad flicked Kagiso Rabada for a four before Mitchell took on Arshdeep Singh. Mitchell and Gaikwad hit Harpreet Brar for 19 runs as Super Kings finished the powerplay with 60/1. Soon, things went downhill. Rahul Chahar struck twice to send back both Gaikwad and Shivam Dube in his first over. Harshal Patel trapped Mitchell on the pads, putting CSK in trouble. Jadeja tried to keep the innings going with consecutive fours off Harshal while Moeen Ali went after Rabada. However, it was short-lived as Curran removed Ali. Santner too fell shortly after, leaving Chennai at 122/6. However, Shardul Thakur hit 17 from 11 balls before getting out to Harshal. MS Dhoni walked out to bat but Harshal delivered a dipping yorker to clean him up. From thereon, Jadeja (43 off 26) delivered a couple of big hits to take Super Kings to 167/9.

IPL 2024: Rahul Chahar, Harshal Patel Star With Three-fers As PBKS Restrict CSK To 167/9

Chennai Super Kings: Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar and pacer Harshal Patel starred with three-fers as Punjab Kings restricted Chennai Super Kings to 167/9 in their 20 overs at the HPCA Stadium here on Sunday. At one point, CSK were cruising at 69/1 in seven overs and seemed to be on course for a 200-plus score. But Chahars 3-23, including taking two wickets in the eighth over, and Harshals 3-24 ensured CSK fell way short of an imposing total, despite Ravindra Jadejas 43. Pushed into batting first by PBKS, CSK were dealt an early blow when Ajinkya Rahane looked to flick off Arshdeep Singh but hit straight to the fielder at mid-wicket. Daryl Mitchell began by pulling and lofting with panache to collect four and six respectively off Arshdeep. Ruturaj Gaikwad cut loose in the last over of Power-play by smashing three fours to take 19 runs off Harpreet Brar as CSK finished Power-play at 60/1. But Chahar applied brakes on CSKs run-scoring by taking out Gaikwad and Shivam Dube in successive deliveries - both nicking behind to keeper. Harshal landed another huge blow to CSK by trapping Mitchell lbw with a nip-backer keeping low. Mitchell went for the review immediately but replays showed the ball clipping leg-stump. Jadeja and Moeen Ali hit two fours each before the latter top-edged a pull to short fine-leg off a back-of-the-hand slower delivery from Sam Curran. Chahar bagged his third wicket when Mitchell Santner holed out to long-on. Shardul Thakur hit two fours and a six off Curran and Chahar, while Jadeja followed that by slog-sweeping the latter for six to get quick runs at the end for CSK. But Harshal had other plans up his sleeve - castling Thakur and MS Dhoni on successive deliveries with slower off-cutters. Jadeja hit Arshdeep for four and six on the first three balls of the final over, before the fast-bowler took the batter out with a slower knuckle ball outside the off-stump and had him miscue a pull to long-on, as CSK ended three runs short of 170. IPL 2024: CSK Pacer Matheesha Pathirana Returns To Sri Lanka For Hamstring Injury Recovery

Chennai Super Kings: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) said on Sunday said fast-bowler Matheesha Pathirana will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery from a hamstring injury. Pathirana made his CSK debut in IPL 2022 season, and played a pivotal role in their title-winning run in 2023. Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery. Chennai Super Kings wishes Pathirana a quick recovery, said the franchise in a statement. Pathirana played six matches for CSK this season, picking up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.68, including a four-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians. He currently sits as CSKs second-leading wicket-taker in IPL 2024 behind Mustafizur Rahman's 14 scalps. The Sri Lankan is the second CSK pacer to be dealing with injuries this season after Deepak Chahar pulled his hamstring and went off the field after bowling the first two balls of the Punjab Kings chase at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 1. In ten matches of IPL 2024, defending champions CSK have lost five and have won as many games. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side are currently placed at fifth position on the points table and need a win over their ongoing match against Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala to keep their IPL 2024 playoffs chances alive.

IPL 2024: 'I Can Feel The Confidence In The Team', Faf Wants RCB To Keep Momentum After Hat-trick Of Wins

Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) third consecutive victory in the 2024 IPL, skipper Faf du Plessis stressed on maintaining the hard-earned momentum team has established in the past two weeks. Following their triumph over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 25, RCB snapped their six-game losing streak. They continued their winning momentum with a victory against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on April 28, followed by another win in the reverse fixture on Saturday. The run of three consecutive victories propelled them from the bottom of the table to the seventh position. Boys well done tonight, unbelievable performance. From my side I can feel the confidence in the group when we are out there in the field. I hope that belief is starting to filter through the group of how good a team we are when we are playing the style of cricket we want to play. So unbelievable effort on that, du Plessis said on RCB Dressing Room Chat. With the bat I know we were not at our best tonight at the last bit of it. That is a point we will talk about in the review. But make sure we celebrate this because we have worked hard three games on the bounce. We take the momentum with us, we take the confidence with us when we move to the next game, the skipper added. Yash Dayal, Vyshak Vijaykumar and Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets each in a superb bowling performance to bundle out GT for a below-par 147. RCBs response was aggressive and decisive to begin with, led by Du Plessis and Virat Kohli, as the visitors looked well on course to victory with 92 in the powerplay. Assistant coach Adam Griffith also complemented the players for putting together the best powerplay displays for RCB in both batting and bowling, among several other brilliant performances. From the bowling perspective tonight, 23 for 3, that is the best powerplay of the tournament. We only got hit for two boundaries in that time, so well done, execution was spot-on. We bowled to the conditions perfectly, coach Griffith said. We kept talking about the aggressiveness to take wickets and to bowl a team out is always tough in a T20 game, to take 10 wickets is exactly what we were after, so well done. The last four overs, we took 5-26. We finished beautifully. It was a team bowling effort and we all played our part as a group. And 92 for 1, that is the best (batting) powerplay RCB has ever had. And Faf, that is the second fastest 50 [off 18 balls] for RCB. In the field, our first direct-hit run-out of the tournament, it was a really important wicket [Shahrukh Khan] for us, so well done Virat, he added. Also getting praise from the assistant coach was Swapnil Singh, who began the game conceding just one run off the first over, and then hit the winning runs with an unbeaten 15 off 9. Special mention for Swappers, you got the broom out there at the end. Started the game for us, finished the game for us, well done, Griffith concluded.

Self-belief and never-say-die attitude are Mohammed Siraj''s real strengths, says Sunil Gavaskar

BENGALURU: Mohammed Siraj's self-belief and never-say-die attitude are his real strengths, said batting legend Sunil Gavaskar after the pacer set up Royal Challengers Bengaluru's four-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League here. Siraj's two-wicket burst in the powerplay to remove Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha played a crucial role as GT could manage just 147 all-out in 19.3 overs on Saturday. Every time you see Mohammed Siraj, you know that he's going to give his heart out. Remember the time when his father passed away when he was in Australia. He carried on, Gavaskar said on Star Sports Cricket Live. A lot of people would want to go back because your parents are so dear to you. But I think he realised that playing for India was important. Also, he was not established at that stage. An established player would 100 per cent have gone back. And remember how spectacularly he bowled in that Gabba Test match. Getting somebody like Steve Smith out when he was on 55...so this is the real strength of Mohammed Siraj, the self-belief and the never-say-die attitude on the field. Chasing a modest 148, Faf du Plessis (64) and Virat Kohli (42) put on 92 runs inside the powerplay to give RCB a blistering start. RCB, however, slipped from 92/0 to 117/6 before romping home in 13.4 overs. IPL 2024: RCB's crucial win over GT keeps campaign alive Extraordinary stuff during the power play when RCB was batting. It was just game on, and then all of a sudden things changed. Were they trying to counter the net run rate solution? And if that is the case, then well played to them because they needed to go hard, former Australian batter Matthew Hayden said. So they lost those three wickets to Joshua Little straight away in that middle stage of the match. And then they were able to consolidate because, simply as you heard Faf at the presentation say, anything short of 180, even 190 on this high-scoring venue, was never going to be enough runs. Former England cricketer and coach Paul Collingwood also lauded the aggressive approach of the RCB batters. The intensity displayed by RCB with the ball was commendable. Even while chasing a modest total, seeing Virat Kohli stepping out of his crease and effortlessly flicking a delivery for six on just the second ball indicated their aggressive intent. This signals danger for their opponents. Despite their position near the bottom of the table, RCB didn't hold back. They showed clarity, bravery, and aggression, particularly in the middle order. Although they lost wickets, I commend their aggressive approach, he said. RCB off ventilator but still in ICU, says Ajay Jadeja

RCB off ventilator but still in ICU, says Ajay Jadeja

BENGALURU: Former India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja believes Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowlers have started to click together to take their side off the ventilator but the team still remains in the ICU following their nervy win over Gujarat Titans. RCB got over the line with four wickets and 38 balls in hand chasing a paltry 148 against GT on Saturday, a win which was set up by the bowlers. Faf du Plessis (64) and Virat Kohli (42) shared 92 runs inside the powerplay but RCB lost wickets in a heap slipping from 92/0 to 117/6 to give Gujarat a real hope of pulling off an unlikely win. The chinks in the armour are visible, what happened at the end. But the chance is there. They're off the ventilator but they're still in the ICU, Jadeja told Jio Cinema. We are excited about today's match after seeing Virat and Faf bat. But the real work that was done, was by the bowlers, an aspect RCB has historically struggled at. The bowling department has started to click for them now, and we're talking about the business end of the season, this is the point where realistic chances of winning comes from momentum Jadeja said RCB may have got the momentum after their win which took them to the seventh spot in the IPL points table, but qualifying for the playoffs remains a very tough ask. More than momentum, it's about the mentality of the team where you know if you're in a bad situation, someone will take you out of it...Today, it seemed like RCB picked the right road while Gujarat was on the other side. Who will reach their goal? It's a very tough ask still, he said. The former India cricketer, however, was impressed with RCB's aggressive approach with the bat in a small chase. They came into the game differently from the start. I haven't checked the statistics, but I have never seen them start a game with a six. Not one, but two of them, in the first over, when there was no need, he said. What Faf did, he was operating at a different pace. Later, there was some excitement in the match but at no point did it seem like this was (GT win) going to be successful.

IPL 2024: 'They Are Off The Ventilator But Still In ICU', Ajay Jadeja Reflects On RCB's Comeback

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: As the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) picked up their fourth win of the IPL 2024 after beating Gujarat Titans (GT), former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja, praising RCB's comeback in the business end of the tournament, said Faf du Plessis-led side are off the ventilator but still in ICU. Riding on a superb show by their fast bowlers and a scintillating 64 from skipper Du Plessis, RCB kept their playoff hopes alive with a four-wicket win at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Saturday's win also lifted RCB off the bottom of the table to number seven. After Yash Dayal, Vyshak Vijaykumar and Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets each to bowl out GT for a below-par 147. A dominant start by the RCB openers, skipper du Plessis and Virat Kohli, set the platform for a win. Although there were a few nerves during the run-chase, RCB were comfortable as they chased the target down with 6.2 overs to spare. Jadeja praised the overall performance from RCB with significant contributions from Kohli (42), Du Plessis (64 ), Siraj (2/29), and Dayal (2/21) and said the win reflects that RCB picked the right road in the tournament. We are excited about today's match after seeing Virat and Faf bat. But the real work that was done, was by the bowlers, an aspect RCB has historically struggled at. The bowling department has started to click for them now, and we're talking about the business end of the season, this is the point where realistic chances of winning comes from momentum... More than momentum, it's about the mentality of the team where you know if you're in a bad situation, someone will take you out of it... The chinks in the armour are visible, what happened at the end. But the chance is there. They're off the ventilator but they're still in the ICU, said Jadeja on Jio Cinema. Discussing RCB's batting strategy, the former cricketer remarked that he had never witnessed RCB commence a match with not one but two sixes in the first over. Today was outstanding... They came into the game differently from the start. I haven't checked the statistics, but I have never seen them start a game with a six. Green revolution: Meet the next generation of Indian pitches

CHENNAI: Toss. Weather. Conditions. Pitch. Dew. Outfield. These are just some of the factors that have a significant say in the way a team approaches a match, irrespective of the format. Among the above, pitch takes prominence for how it behaves could dictate the pace at which play progresses. While cricket is still scratching the surface when it comes to data, significant technological advancements have been made in many other aspects, including the pitch. Whether it is drop-in or conventional, there are different types of pitches based on the soil used, and so on. Over the past decade or so, hybrid pitches, too, have come into practice, especially for the white-ball format. SISGrass, a UK-based synthetic turf manufacturer, has been a pioneer in the field not just in cricket but also in football, rugby and hockey. With over 650 hybrid pitches installed across the globe, including Dubai, where conditions are vastly different from England. And now, joining hands with Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA), they have installed four hybrid pitches on the square of the scenic venue at the foothills of the Dhauladhar Range and two pitches in the nets outside. While they are used just for practice at the moment, it is the first time a venue in the country has installed hybrid pitches. Now, what is a hybrid pitch and how is it different from a conventional surface? Paul Taylor, former England cricketer and International Sales Director, Cricket at SIS Grass, explains. There are different kinds of hybrid pitches. There is an artificial hybrid, a concrete base with a carpet on top and then a soil profile on top of that. There's a carpeted hybrid, which is a synthetic carpet. It's then filled with soil, and then grass grows within that soil. Then there's the stitched hybrid, which is what we do. It takes your existing natural turf pitch and we inject synthetic fibres into that surface. And the stitching is at 20*20m centres. It covers the whole pitch, and it extends beyond the stump lines by about a metre to make sure that the back foot contact for the bowlers is part of the system. The fundamental thing that is different about our pitch, is that it's still 95 percent a natural turf surface. There's only 5 percent of fibre injected into it, Taylor tells this daily. The stitching goes to a depth of 90mm but we can stitch deeper. In cricket, we only stitch to 90mm because that's all that's really needed. The fibre that we use is a polyethylene monofilament fibre. It's the latest technology in terms of how that's made. It's resilient and durable. It enhances performance. It doesn't fade in UV light and things like that. And it comes in different colours as well. We have a green fibre, a beige fibre, then a mixture of green and beige, so whatever the surface that we're stitching into, we can pick the suit, he adds. The 5 percent fibre is expected to keep the wear and tear in check; it also enables the grass to recover after a match. The fibres help the grass plant to become stronger. There's a natural air space around the fibre when it's injected, obviously, water will go down. And all the nutrients that are put onto cricket squares will also get down to the root. So the grass is a lot stronger, a lot more durable. You get up to three times the amount of cricket on one pitch that you would ordinarily get with a fully natural surface, says Taylor. However, when it comes to pitches, it is never one size fits all. The conditions in England, where SIS Grass began working in 2017, is very different from India, a country where different states will have different climatic conditions throughout the year. This is where the other factors like soil content and clay content come into play. It is different in different places. However, we have installed it in Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and so on. One of the things we noticed when we installed the pitches in the UK is that the moisture content within the soil profile needed to be about 40% to allow the injecting needles to inject the fibres. In India, because the clay content is a lot higher, I think in Dharamsala it was around 66%, the moisture content we had to get into the profile was anywhere between 60-80%. Again, it's all part of learning. We now know how to install in the north of the country, but installing it in Mumbai and installing in Kolkata could be very different. We can adapt how we install to suit the conditions, Taylor explains. The type of grass used too plays a crucial role based on the climatic conditions, even more so in a country like India where cricket is played all throughout the year. What we need to understand is the different types of grass. The squares over here tend to be Bermuda grass rather than Rye grass, which is what they are predominantly in the UK. So the outfield at Dharamsala is a Rye grass outfield and by the way, it looks beautiful. It's absolutely stunning when I was there last time. The issues they have had previously have been rectified. Credit to the ground staff for getting that back. The other thing that is worth mentioning is we actually have a system in that outfield called SISAir, which is a drainage system and an aeration system specifically designed to improve the outfield performance. That is now working well, it has made a big difference to the outfield. That's a first for India as well. So, Dharamsala is leading the way in terms of cricket technology, said Taylor. I think what we're looking to work out at the moment is in what parts of the country, and times of year that we can install these pitches. They only take one pitch, and will take about four hours to install. So it's quite a quick process as long as we've got the appropriate moisture content in that pitch. So the preparation of those pitches is the important thing from our side. If we can get the moisture content in, we can actually stitch the pitch in four hours. We're actually developing a new machine that's going to be able to stitch in three hours. That is the plan, which will be developed over the next few months. But the universal machine will stitch one pitch in four hours. So the installation at Dharamsala took about two weeks, and that's mainly through finding out about the conditions about the soil content, the moisture content, the clay content. So there's a little bit of research initially over the first three or four days before we actually start to work. The challenge, however, remains when it comes to red-ball cricket. At the moment, they have the ICC's approval for using hybrid surfaces in white-ball cricket but not in tests. However, they have gotten approval to use hybrid pitches in the 2024 England County season on a trial basis. The practice surfaces at the HPCA Stadium are put to use on Saturday as the Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings prepare for their return leg contest to be played on Sunday. But for SIS Grass, this is just the beginning. Mumbai and Ahmedabad are next in line but Taylor wants to take the technology to the masses. It's a product that we want to cascade throughout the cricketing network in India. So that's working with schools, local clubs, local communities and so on. Yes, it enhances the professional game. More importantly, from my perspective, it enhances the grassroots game as well. Because if we can get young players playing on the same sort of surfaces as the international players, that's got to be a bonus for development of the game in India, says Taylor. For HPCA, it is about embracing the new technology and having the best of the facilities at the venue, ensuring that the youngsters can give themselves the best chance to improve on their game. The pitches offer a consistent, smooth, even playing surface to the players, especially the youngsters, which will enhance their skills. This should be implemented in other grounds across the country so that players are well versed with playing on these grassy wickets, which are the future of the game, Avnish Parmar, HPCA Secretary, told this daily.

Technology is there to take care of human error: Umpire Madanagopal

CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu cricketer and noted umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal will be making his World Cup debut in the T20 World Cup to be played in the West Indies and USA from June 1. Nitin Menon is the other umpire on the panel from India. They are part of a panel of 20 umpires who will be officiating 55 matches across nine venues. Having made his debut in women's one-dayers back in 2013, Madanagopal stood as an umpire for the first time in a men's international during the 2021 India-New Zealand T20I at Ranchi. He has also officiated in an international match at his home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium. A smooth-stroking batter for Tamil Nadu, Madanagopal, has been a coach of TNPL teams and First Division teams in the TNCA league too. Since 2007, he has been on the BCCI panel of umpires and will be emulating the likes of S Venkataraghavan and S Ravi, the other umpires from Tamil Nadu, to officiate in a World Cup. Madanagopal is delighted to be part of the World Cup panel and spoke to this daily about pressure, DRS, fitness of umpires and more. Excerpts from the interview. Any pressure to be part of the WC panel? The job will be the same. I have been officiating International matches for the last three years. So the expectations and challenges remain the same. It won't be any different, but it's definitely a great opportunity (ICC T20 World Cup). On DRS and pressure With DRS everything is out in the open, almost black and white. So it is an instinct. Umpiring is always an instinct. You do your preparation, you study the angles and then, based on the evidence in front of you, make a decision. There's no pressure. The game is getting benefited. Right decisions are made. The game moves on in the right direction. It's absolutely fine. It's not about pressure. It's about getting the game in the right direction. So we are happy with DRS. An on-field umpire gives a decision not out, the fielding side opts for DRS and gets it reversed. Does he get upset or does the decision upset his concentration? No. It is part of the game. And what we need to see is the game remains unaffected because of a human error. That is the most important thing. The game has to flow in the right direction. And human judgment is corrected by technology, which is what the game requires. So that should be the mindset. It is not about an umpire making a mistake or umpire getting it correct. It is about the game. The game needs to go in the right direction. That is why technology is there to take care of any human error that may possibly be there. Another challenge for umpires today is intimidation from players in high-profile games? For us, our job is about making decisions and controlling the game. And that is why we are there, out in the middle. We are expected to handle some high-profile players and that is what we have to do. So this is where we prepare ourselves for that. There is no intimidation from big players. On fitness of umpires It (umpiring) is just basically an extension for me. Right from playing days, I have been used to this kind of lifestyle, travelling and staying. So it is a natural extension for me. Right from twelve years, I've been travelling and being in a team environment. So, okay, it is definitely not new for me. I've been doing this for the last 30, 35 years now. Noise is definitely a problem with large crowds out there. The hearing may not be, you know, like in a normal domestic game or something. But then you adapt to those situations. You adapt to the conditions, your awareness is so much heightened when you get into a situation like that. Yeah, there are other clues that you are trying to pick up and it kind of set into your system. You get adapted to the system. On improving his skills over the years The growth has been constant. I have been learning right through whatever and whenever I get an opportunity. Every game is a learning experience for me. Definitely, I've learned and am improving. And it's a continuous process. It doesn't stop,'' explained the genial umpire. Does he watch his own videos to study and improve? Nowadays, almost all the games are televised, so I get to watch and dissect decisions. Yes, there is some homework that I do. There is a process that I follow. I take some feedback. I work on my game (umpiring).

IPL 2024: Was Sick, Wasnt Going To Play At All, Reveals Mohammed Siraj After Brilliant Spell V GT

Indian Premier League: Fridays rain ahead of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru-Gujarat Titans clash meant that fast-bowlers could get some help in Saturday's clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here. It happened exactly like that as Mohammed Siraj, Vysakh Vijaykumar and Yash Dayal were spot-on with their lengths and found movement to bowl out Gujarat Titans for just 147 in Match 52 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Siraj got the ball to move both ways in his Power-play and that helped him in dismissing Wriddhiman Saha for the fourth time in seven innings. He then forced Shubman Gill to whip and ended up being caught at deep point off a leading edge. He eventually finished with figures of 2-29, earning him Player of the Match award after RCBs four-wicket win. I was actually sick since last night and wasn't going to play at all today, so this is great. When I got up this morning I thought it was better to rest but the almighty made me play. I kind of manifested it this morning because I envisioned it in a way that I would get Saha out like that, caught behind. I had been playing red-ball cricket for long and hadn't played with the white ball since the ODI World Cup. So my rhythm was missing a little bit when I came here. But it came back gradually as I worked and practised more and more, said Siraj after the match ended, where it seemed he was getting his white-ball mojo back, especially with the T20 World Cup starting immediately after IPL 2024. With the bat, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli gave RCB a blazing start with a 92-run opening stand off just 35 balls. Du Plessis, the RCB captain, was the more aggressive of the two, hitting 10 fours and three sixes in his 23-ball 64. Du Plessis felt the phase where RCB lost six wickets in quick succession is something to be taken note of while appreciating his bowling group for being consistent. There was more bounce in the wicket, we got that information and the bowlers were consistently really good. We dropped a catch but have been really consistent. Something around 180-90 would have been a good score, but we've seen the way the game has changed. Don't look at the scoreboard and play the way that we want to play. It was a bit nerve-racking, another wicket, another wicket. Probably not the best (way to complete a chase) but you're trying to be positive, get your NRR up. It makes sense from that point of view but it gets to the point when you need to show a bit of calmness and composure - probably around four down, so some lessons to be learned from that. It took Dinesh Karthiks 21 not out and Swapnil Singhs unbeaten 15 to get RCB over the line in 13.4 overs and help them jump to seventh place in the points table. Karthik was having tea and drank cappuccino after four overs, with the thought being his batting chance wouldnt come, but he had to come in to save the day. But things happened and then I had to have a bat. How to hit boundaries, basic cricketing skills come through. I backed myself to get the job done. The pitch was good to bowl on, having been under the covers there was a bit of moisture, said Karthik. Good toss to win but the bowlers did the job beautifully. The way Faf and Virat batted, I don't think they would have played the same shots batting first! Play for the one that comes in (on advice to Swapnil). Said the sweep is a good option, but commit to it, he added. RCBs win also meant GT slid to ninth place, while Mumbai Indians became the new occupants of tenth position in the points table. GT captain Shubman Gill admitted his batters should have posted 170-180 on board, with their playoff hopes now hanging by a slim thread. It depends on the wicket. First couple of overs you get a good idea and play according to that. I think 170-80 on this wicket would have been a good total. How we batted in the Power-play, and how they bowled, decided the game. We would have had one extra bowler but losing three wickets in the powerplay (changed planning). Very important to start from zero in our next match and move on from this game. Learn from mistakes and not repeat them. All about winning from here on, said Gill. RCB will now travel to Dharamsala, where they will take on Punjab Kings on May 9 at the HPCA Stadium while GT will return home to Ahmedabad and rest before preparing to host defending champions Chennai Super Kings on May 10 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

IPL 2024: Bowlers, Du Plessis Keep RCBs Playoff Hopes Alive With Four-wicket Win Over GT (ld)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Riding on a superb performance by their fast bowlers and a blistering 64 from captain Faf du Plessis, Royal Challengers Bengaluru kept their playoff hopes alive with a four-wicket win over Gujarat Titans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. After Yash Dayal, Vyshak Vijaykumar and Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets each in a superb bowling performance to bowl out GT for a below-par 147, du Plessis and Virat Kohli gave RCB a blazing start with a 92-run opening stand coming in just 35 balls. Du Plessis was more aggressive of the two, hitting 10 fours and three sixes in his 23-ball stay at the crease. After he fell, GT triggered a spectacular RCB batting implosion by picking up six wickets from overs 6-11. It took Dinesh Karthiks 21 not out and Swapnil Singhs unbeaten 15 to get RCB over the line in 13.4 overs and help them jump to seventh place in the points table. RCBs win also meant GT slid to ninth place, while Mumbai Indians became the new occupants of tenth position in the points table. On a two-paced surface, Dayal, Vyshak and Siraj got their lengths and rhythm spot-on to bundle out GT for the lowest total at the venue in IPL 2024. They were also supported by Cameron Green and Karn Sharma taking a wicket apiece. Shahrukh Khan, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia chipped in with sizeable 30s, but none of them converted it into a big knock to make it the third time GT have been bowled out this season. Electing to bowl first, Siraj found late movement on a short and wide ball, which was good enough to find an outside edge of Wriddhiman Saha. It was also the fourth time Siraj took out Saha in the IPL. Siraj found late movement again when he forced Shubman Gill to whip and ended up with deep point taking a catch off a leading edge. The consistent B. Sai Sudharsan was next to fall, pulling without footwork and top-edge caught by mid-off against Green, as GT ended their power-play at a paltry 23/3, the lowest total in this six-over phase of IPL 2024. Post a horror Power-play, GT got some boundaries flowing, starting from Shahrukh glancing and cutting off Vyshak in the seventh over. He and Miller, dropped on 23 by Karn off Green, got some sublime timing on their shots to keep GT innings going as 38 runs came from overs 8-11. Shahrukh brought up the 50-run stand for the fourth wicket in the 11th over by smashing Green high over long-on for a 94-metre six. But RCB launched a fight-back in successive overs - Miller holed out to long-on off Karn after hitting a six over extra cover, while Shahrukh was run out by a direct hit from Virat Kohli at non-strikers end. Tewatia took a liking to Karn by smashing three fours and a six to take 19 runs off the 16th over, followed by Rashid taking two boundaries off Siraj in the next over. But Dayal brought a halt to the 44-run stand by castling Rashids leg-stump with a yorker, before taking out Tewatia with a short ball, with the diving third man taking the catch off the top edge. Vyshak came back to take out Manav Suthar and Vijay Shankar, while Mohit Sharma was run out in the final over as RCB got a team hat-trick to bowl out GT with three balls unused in their innings. Kohli began RCBs chase of 148 by lofting and whipping Mohit Sharma for a brace of sixes in the opening over. Du Plessis greeted Joshua Little with a pulled four, followed by taking two fours and a six in the 20-run second over. He then took the attack to debutant spinner Manav Suthar, taking a six and four in the third over, followed by heaving Mohit over mid-wicket to bring up RCBs fifty in just 19 balls. There was just no stopping du Plessis as he took three more fours off Mohit in an 18-run fourth over. After a sublime Kohli dispatched Suthar for two sixes, du Plessis completed his fifty in 18 balls and went on to slam Little for two fours and a six in the last over of Power-play. But Little had the last laugh by cramping du Plessis for room and a short fine leg took the catch on top-edge, as RCB ended Power-play at 92/1. The fast and furious-styled scoring from RCB in Power-play was brought to a halt afterwards by GT as Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell and Green perished quickly. When Kohli nicked behind off Noor Ahmad to fall for a 27-ball 42, the RCB supporting home crowd was left stunned over the batting meltdown resulting in the hosts being at 116/6 from 92/0. Amidst incredible pressure, a calm Karthik came out to diffuse the tension in the run-chase by taking down Rashid Khan with three fours a whip over mid-wicket was followed by pull over square leg and a firm carve over cover in a 16-run 12th over. A brace of lovely sweeps from Swapnil Singh off Noor, followed by the batter slamming Rashid down the ground for a huge six ensured RCB got over the line with 38 balls to spare, which is a big win in the race to playoffs heating up in IPL 2024. Brief scores: Gujarat Titans 147 all out in 19.3 overs (Shahrukh Khan 37, Rahul Tewatia 35; Yash Dayal 2-21, Vyshak Vijaykumar 2-23) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru 152/6 in 13.4 overs (Faf du Plessis 64, Virat Kohli 42; Joshua Little 4-45, Noor Ahmad 2-23) by four wickets

IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans labour to 147 against Royal Challengers Bangalore

CHENNAI: Shahrukh Khan's 37 and David Miller's 30 helped Gujarat Titans to post 147 in 19.3 overs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy stadium on Saturday. Shahrukh's controlled aggression came in handy. David Miller put the short handle to effective use and was harsh on Karn Sharma before eventually losing his wicket to the same bowler. Reeling at 19 for 3 after 5.3 overs, Shahrukh and Miller steadied the Gujarat ship. After being asked to bat, Gujarat got off to a disastrous start as Wriddhiman Saha was sent back by Mohammed Siraj in the second over. The onus was on captain Shubman Gill and the in-form B Sai Sudharsan to take charge and help Gujarat get a good start. With the team lying at eighth spot going into the match, it was a must-win game for Gujarat. ''The talk is to win four in four. It's important to turn up and deliver our best. I feel our fielding has let us down. We had a chat about it. We need to be a better team as a fielding unit. IPL is such a long tournament. It's important to turn up on the day. We have two changes, Manav Suthar makes his debut and Josh Little comes in,'' Gill had said before the match. However, Gill (2 off 7 balls) didn't last long as he fell prey to Siraj. He got out while trying to whip a good-length delivery towards the on side. He closed the face of the bat too soon and found the top edge. The deep third fielder, Vyshak Vijay Kumar, came in and claimed the catch. Vyshak later claimed two wickets. Soon, it became a nightmare situation for the visiting side as Sai Sudharsan was also dismissed. Cameron Green outfoxed Sudharsan with a change of pace. That's when Shahrukh and Miller intervened to carry out the rescue act. Later, Rahul Tewatia hit 21-ball 35 to help the team cross the 140-run mark.

Pushed into batting first, Wriddhiman Sahas poor form continued when Siraj found late movement on a short and wide ball, which was good enough to find an outside edge. It was also the fourth time Siraj took out Saha in the IPL. Siraj found late movement again when he forced Gill to whip and ended up with a deep point taking a leading edge. The consistent Sai Sudharsan was next to fall, pulling without footwork and top-edge caught by mid-off against Green, as GT ended the Power-play at a paltry 23/3, the lowest total in this six-over phase of IPL 2024. Post a horror Power-play, GT got some boundaries flowing, starting with Shahrukh glancing and cutting off Vyshak in the seventh over. He and Miller, dropped on 23 by Karn Sharma off Green, got some sublime timing on their shots to keep GT innings going as 38 runs came from overs 8-11. Shahrukh brought up the 50-run stand for the fourth wicket in the 11th over by smashing Green high over long-on for a 94-m six. Vyshak came back to take out Manav Suthar and Vijay Shankar, apart from a run-out of Mohit Sharma in the final over as RCB got a team hat-trick to bowl out GT with three balls unused in their innings. Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans 147 in 19.3 overs (Shahrukh Khan 37, Rahul Tewatia 35; Yash Dayal 2-21, Vyshak Vijaykumar 2-23) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru

IPL, PSL dates may clash next season; players will be forced to make a choice

CHENNAI: The stage is set for an unlikely India-Pakistan clash in the opening months of next year. With next year's Champions Trophy to be staged in Pakistan in February and March, the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the country's franchise-based short-form competition, could be moved to a 5-6 window in the months of April and May. This is, of course, when the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played. Due to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 being held in the traditional event window, the event window for the 2025 event will be April 7May 20, 2025, a PCB press release proposed on Saturday. The board proposed these dates after consulting with franchise owners. At the back of this meeting, and in relation to the most suitable window for PSL 2025 and beyond, the PCB will share further data with the franchise owners so that they can discuss amongst themselves, PCB COO, Salman Naseer, was quoted as saying in the release. We look forward to working closely with the franchisees to take timely decisions, he added. Usually, the PSL is reserved for FebruaryMarch so players aren't forced to pick between featuring in one of the two leagues. In 2025, that may not be the case as a major chunk of the IPL will be in April and May (it could even be brought forward by a week or so if India qualifies for the WTC final to enable Indian players rest and recover before flying out to the UK). Taking 2024 as a yardstick, some of the players who would have been forced into a decision would have been Luke Wood, Sikandar Raza, Rovman Powell, Rilee Rossouw, Shai Hope and Tom-Kohler Cadmore. One wonders if this would influence the decision of what players the IPL owners may want to target at next year's mega auctions. It also remains to be seen if the Indian government will sign off on the team travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
