In DNA of current EC to not take cognisance of 'brazen' MCC violations by PM: CPI(M) The CPI(M) on Saturday slammed the Election Commission, alleging that it is in the ''DNA'' of the current panel to not take cognisance of the ''brazen'' violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Citing Modi's remarks that the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress will ''bulldoze the Ram temple'' and its poll code violation complaints to the commission, the Left party claimed that the election panel has completely ignored its complaints. Modi, while addressing a Lok Sabha election rally in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki on Friday, alleged that the Congress will run a bulldozer on the Ram temple if the INDIA bloc comes to power. ''If the SP-Congress comes to power, it will send Ram Lalla once again to a tent, and a bulldozer will be rolled over the temple,'' he said. The CPI(M), SP and the Congress are among the constituents of the opposition INDIA bloc, formed to take on the BJP in the polls. Sharing a clipping of a headline in a post on X, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said, ''It is in the DNA of the current ECI (Election Commission of India) not to take cognisance of such brazen violation of the MCC by PM Modi.'' ''Earlier my complaints on Modi's incendiary communal speeches in Ajmer on April 6, Nawada on April 7, Pilibhit on April 9 with video evidence and the speech of Banswara with clippings of newspaper reports were completely ignored without even the customary acknowledgment,'' he said. ''The ECI slogan, ''Desh ka garv'', to describe the current elections is totally hollowed out by such nonconduct of 'free and fair elections' with a level playing field,'' Yechury said. The CPI(M) has filed a number of complaints against Modi and other BJP leaders for violation of the Model Code of Conduct, including those related to his speech in Banswara in Rajasthan. While addressing a rally in Banswara on April 21, Modi had suggested that if the Congress comes to power, it would ''redistribute'' wealth to Muslims. He had also alleged that the Congress plans to give the people's hard-earned money and valuables to the ''infiltrators'' and ''those who have more children''. Yechury had written to the Election Commission on April 22 on the Banswara speech, calling it a violation of Section 123 (3) of the Representation of People's Act and the poll code. In another letter to the commission on April 13, the CPI(M) had raised various instances where Modi making references to the Ram temple in Ayodhya, levelled allegations against opposition parties and labelled them as ''opponents of the temple'', ''being against Lord Ram'' and ''insulting Lord Ram''. The letter gave references of speeches made by Modi in Nawada in Bihar on April 7, in Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh on April 9 and in Ajmer in Rajasthan on April 6.

Four-time Nagai MP, CPI leader Selvaraj passes away aged 67
CHENNAI/NAGAPATTINAM: Senior Communist Party of India leader and four-time Nagapattinam MP, M Selvaraj, passed away on Monday morning. The 67-year-old is survived by his wife Kamalavathanam and two daughters. CPI sources said Selvaraj had been grappling with serious illness for the past three years, with frequent episodes of hospitalisation. Last week, he was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai, where he succumbed to his ill health at 2.40 am on Monday. A committed CPI cadre right from his student years, the leader was elected from the Nagapattinam constituency in 1989, 1996, 1998 and 2019. He did not contest in the 2024 LS election due to his poor health; the party fielded Vai Selvaraj instead. Prior to his rise as a CPI national committee member, Selvaraj held numerous student and youth wing positions. He fiercely advocated for the Cauvery delta farmers and played an important role in mobilising them to demand action from the centre regarding the water disputes with Karnataka. Most notably, in July 1989, Selvaraj successfully organised a massive human chain protest that stretched for 110km from Thanjavur to Vedaranyam, demanding the constitution of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. CPI flag to be flown at half-mast The CPI leader is also known for his efforts towards improving rail connectivity across the delta region. Selvaraj took swift action towards gauge conversion of railway lines in the delta districts and played an important part in restoring rail service between Agasthiyampalli and Thiruthuraipoondi after many years, said S Mohan, president of the Nagapattinam Rail Users Association. Syed Mohamed Kalifa Sahib, president of the Nagore Dargah Advisory Board, said, We are very grateful to Selvaraj for his vote in the parliament to connect Nagore and Ajmer, two important places of Islamic worship, through an interstate rail service. His mortal remains will be placed at his residence in Sidhamalli until Tuesday to allow for public to pay their respects. His final rites are scheduled for Tuesday at 10 am. Chief Minister M K Stalin and leaders of various political parties condoled the demise of the leader. CPI State Secretary R Mutharasan described Selvaraj as a peoples worker par excellence, who tirelessly attended to his party responsibilities. He called on the CPI cadre to mourn the veterans passing by flying the party flag at half-mast for three days. Class X results: 93% students pass, marginally higher than in 2023
NEW DELHI: The CBSE on Monday declared the results for the Class 10 exam, with 93.60 percent of students clearing the test. The pass percentage this year has seen a minor increase of 0.48 percent. Girls outshine boys by 2.04 percentage points, as 94.75 percent of them cleared the exam. While girls pass rates increased slightly from 94.25 percent in 2023 to 94.75 percent in 2024, boys improvement was also marginal, rising from 92.27 percent to 92.71 percent. More than 47,000 students have scored above 95 percent, and more than 2.12 lakh have scored above 90 percent. With a 99.7 percent pass rate, Trivandrum was in first place, followed by Vijaywada (99.60 percent) and Chennai (99.30 percent). Both Bengaluru and Ajmer demonstrated strong performance, achieving respective pass percentages of 99.26 percent and 97.10 percent, respectively. Pune came in second with 96.46 per cent, while Chandigarh, Delhi East, and Delhi West all continued to achieve at 94.45 per cent, 94.18 per cent, and 94.14 per cent, respectively. Patnas 92.91 percent passing percentage at the end highlighted the disparities in academic standards between regions. The overall pass rates for all subjects show an upward trend in academic achievement when comparing the years 2023 and 2024. A rise from the 2,184,117 registrations and 2,165,805 appearances recorded in 2023 can be seen in the 2,238,827 registered students who took the exams in 2024. Alongside this increase in participation, more students were passing the exams as well: 2,095,467 students passed in 2024 as opposed to 20,16,779 in 2023. Thus, there was a noteworthy improvement of 0.48 percent as the overall pass percentage increased from 93.12 percent in 2023 to 93.60 percent in 2024.

He said the department has made all preparations for repolling as per the instructions of the Commission and webcasting will be done at the polling station. Earlier repolling was held on May 2 at a polling station in Ajmer Lok Sabha constituency. There are 25 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan. Of these, voting was held for 12 seats in the first phase on April 19 and for 13 seats in the second phase on April 26.

Scorching Heat Wave Grips India, Kalaikunda Swelters at 47.6 Degrees Celsius Facing the brunt of an extended heat wave, Kalaikunda in West Bengal recorded a maximum temperature of 47.2 degrees Celsius, the highest ever in April anywhere in the country which reeled under searing heat and stifling humidity on Tuesday. The maximum of 47.2 degrees Celsius at Kalaikunda was 10.4 degrees above the normal for the season, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said, adding that it marked the prevalence of severe heat wave conditions over the Gangetic West Bengal region. Popular hill stations such as Ugadhmandalam (Ooty) in Tamil Nadu and Matheran in Maharashtra also did not escape the brunt of the scorching summer with the mercury touching 29.4 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius, respectively. According to the department, 29.4 degrees Celsius was the highest ever maximum temperature recorded at Ooty in April, surpassing the 28.5 degrees Celsius recorded on April 29, 1986. At Matheran, the only automobile-free hill station in the country, the mercury climbed to 37 degrees Celsius, the fourth highest maximum temperature recorded there ever. The hill station, located about 90 km from Mumbai, had recorded the highest ever maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius on February 6, 1979, followed by 37.4 degrees Celsius on April 2, 1975 and 37.2 degrees Celsius on April 7, 1978. Speaking of records, Churu in Rajasthan had clocked 49.9 degrees Celsius on May 26, 1998 and 49 degrees Celsius on June 5, 2003. Sikar, also in Rajasthan, had recorded a maximum of 49.7 degrees Celsius on June 12, 1993 and 49 degrees Celsius on May 26, 1994. Ajmer had recorded a maximum temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius on May 19, 1997. The automatic weather station at Baharagora in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand recorded 47.1 degrees. However, long-term weather data was not available for the town to calculate the departure from normal temperatures for the season. Baripada in Odisha sizzled at 46.4 degrees Celsius, 8.9 degrees above the normal, followed by Balasore at 46 degrees Celsius (+10.1 degrees), Panagarh in West Bengal at 45.6 degrees Celsius (+10 degrees), Jamshedpur in Jharkhand at 45.5 degrees Celsius (+5.8 degrees) and Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh at 45 degrees Celsius (+4.2 degrees). Several cities and towns in Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana recorded temperatures in excess of 44 degrees Celsius. Intensely hot conditions are expected in east India until May 1 and the south peninsular region over the next five days, the IMD said. The threshold for a heat wave is met when the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas, and 30 degrees in the hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 notches. A severe heat wave is declared if the departure from normal exceeds 6.4 notches. The ongoing heat wave spell is the second this month. Heatwave conditions have been prevailing in Odisha since April 15 and in Gangetic West Bengal since April 17, according to the department. Amid the prevailing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period, coinciding with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. Lakhs of voters had to cope with the searing heat when they stepped out to exercise their franchise in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 26. Voting to elect representatives from 94 constituencies in 12 states will take place on May 7. The weather office has said four to eight heat wave days are expected in different parts of the country in April against a normal of one to three days. Ten to 20 heatwave days are expected against a normal of four to eight in the entire April-June period. The areas and regions predicted to witness a higher number of heat wave days are Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Bihar and Jharkhand. Some places may record more than 20 heatwave days. The intense heat could strain power grids and result in water shortages in parts of India. Global weather agencies, including the IMD, are also expecting La Nina conditions to develop later in the year. El Nino conditions -- periodic warming of surface waters in the central Pacific Ocean -- are associated with weaker monsoon winds and drier conditions in India. La Nina conditions -- the antithesis of El Nino -- lead to plentiful rainfall during the monsoon season. In a mid-April update, the IMD said India would experience above-normal cumulative rainfall in the 2024 monsoon season with La Nina conditions, expected to set in by August-September, being the dominant factor. The monsoon is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area dependent on it. It is also crucial for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water apart from power generation across the country.

Court ruling takes the wind off GoFirst insolvency resolution
The Delhi High Courts recent order allowing the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to process the applications filed by several lessors for deregistration of 54 planes is a body blow to the resolution process of Go First. The airline had 59 aircraft when it stopped operations in early May last year. With virtually all but five aircraft gone, there would be very little assets left with the airline. The court verdict, therefore, makes it difficult for any prospective resolution applicant to see any value in bidding for the ailing airline. After the verdict, a successful resolution may elude Go First, leading to the most likely resultthe liquidation of the company. Go First has been going through the insolvency resolution process since May 10 last year. The airlines process is being overseen by resolution professional Shailendra Ajmera, who had so far successfully managed to avoid deregistration of the leased aircraft. The National Company Law Tribunal had, in the past, rejected the lessors plea of deregistering the planes citing Section 14 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), which gives a company undergoing the insolvency process protection against legal proceedings. However, this protection was taken away after a change in rule effected by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs last October. It said the provisions under Section 14 of the IBC would not apply to agreements governed by the Cape Town Convention and Cape Town Protocol, which guide international interests in mobile equipment including aircraft. The Delhi High Court was also mindful of the fact that because of such measures, the global aviation leasing watchdog has taken down Indias compliance index from 3.5 to 2 points out of 5. The grounding of Go First is a blow to the aviation sector, which is now becoming a duopoly between IndiGo and the Tata Group, with the two together accounting for almost 85 percent of the market in terms of passengers carried. The future of Jet Airways, which has been acquired by Jalan-Kalrock consortium under the IBC, is still uncertain. The resolution process of Go First had seen two buyers showing interest in the airlines, but the latest court decision puts the resolution process at risk.

JAIPUR: A group of three masked men allegedly beat to death a 30-year-old cleric of a mosque in Rajasthan's Ajmer, police said on Sunday. A case has been lodged in the matter and efforts are on to identify and nab the accused, they said. According to the police, the incident took place around 2 am on Saturday when the accused allegedly entered the mosque located in Kanchan Nagar under the Ramganj police station limits and attacked the cleric, Mohammad Tahir, with sticks. Tahir died on the spot. Six children were also present inside the mosque when the incident occurred, the police said. The trio allegedly threatened the children not to disclose the matter and took away their mobile phones so that they could not inform anyone or call for help, they said. After the accused fled, the children came out of the mosque and told people about the incident, they added. Tahir used to teach children in the mosque, according to the police. SHO Ramganj Ravindra Singh said Tahir's body was handed over to his family members after they arrived in Ajmer from Uttar Pradesh. A case has been registered over the matter against unidentified persons under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the SHO said. He said so far no arrest has been made in this connection and efforts are on to identify and arrest the accused.

According to the police, the incident took place around 2 am on Saturday when the accused allegedly entered the mosque located in Kanchan Nagar under the Ramganj police station limits and attacked the cleric, Mohammad Tahir, with sticks. Tahir died on the spot. Six children were also present inside the mosque when the incident occurred, the police said. The trio allegedly threatened the children not to disclose the matter and took away their mobile phones so that they could not inform anyone or call for help, they said. After the accused fled, the children came out of the mosque and told people about the incident, they added. Tahir used to teach children in the mosque, according to the police. SHO Ramganj Ravindra Singh said Tahir's body was handed over to his family members after they arrived in Ajmer from Uttar Pradesh. A case has been registered over the matter against unidentified persons under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the SHO said. He said so far no arrest has been made in this connection and efforts are on to identify and arrest the accused.

The victims -- Bhanwari Devi (60), Divyanshi (5), Kherajram (25), Vinita (3) and Dimple (3) -- were on their way to the Ranibai temple in Harsaur with five others in the car, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rameshwar Lal said. The car collided with the dumper truck at the Kisan intersection in Harsaur town under the Degana police station area, the DSP said. The injured were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Two of them were referred to a hospital in Ajmer where they died during treatment, he said. A case has been registered against the driver of the dumper truck, who managed to flee, Lal said.

ED files supplementary prosecution complaint against five in connection with RPSC paper leak The Enforcement Directorate, Jaipur Zonal Office has filed a supplementary prosecution complaint (SPC) against five accused in connection with the Rajasthan Public Service Commission paper leak case. The complaint was filed before the Special Judge PMLA/CBI-3 in Jaipur on February 28 under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The court has taken cognizance of the complaint, the ED informed in a press release on Thursday. The accused are namely: Pukhraj, Peera Ram, Suresh Kumar AKA Suresh Sau, Vijay Damore and Arun Sharma. ED has initiated investigation on the basis of FIRs and chargesheets registered/filed by Rajasthan Police, under various sections of Indian Penal Code against Babulal Katara and other accused persons, the release stated. ED investigation revealed that these suspected persons leaked the GS papers of Senior Teacher Grade II Competitive Examination, 2022 to be conducted by RPSC on December 21, 22 and 24 at various places in Rajasthan. In this case, ED has earlier conducted two searches at 22 premises of accused persons on June 5 and October 13, last year, resulting in the recovery of incriminating documents/digital records. Further, ED has also provisionally attached movable and immovable properties worth Rs. 3.11 Crore of Babulal Katara, Anil Meena AKA Sher Singh Meena, and others vide PAO dated 18.08.2023 which has been confirmed by the Ld. Adjudicating Authority under PMLA, New Delhi on 19.01.2024. Thereafter, ED took possession of two movable properties and nine immovable properties worth of around Rs 2.4 Crore situated at Ajmer, Jaipur, and Dungarpur in March 2024. So far, ED has arrested eight accused persons namely: Babulal Katara, Anil Kumar Meena, Bhupendra Saran, Suresh Kumar, Vijay Damore, Peeraram, Pukhraj, and Arun Sharma under the provisions of PMLA. The cognizance of the prosecution complaint filed on November 9, 2023 against three accused persons namely Babulal Katara, Bhupendra Saran, and Anil Kumar Meena has been taken by Special Court (PMLA), Jaipur on January 24 this year. Further investigation is under progress, the law enforcement agency stated. (ANI)

The first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will see 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories go to polls on Friday. The first phase of polling will take place across all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, all five seats in Uttarakhand, both seats in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Meghalaya, and the sole seat in Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, respectively. Polling will also take place for 12 out of 25 seats in Rajasthan, eight out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, six out of 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh, five out of 48 seats in Maharashtra, five out of 14 seats in Assam, and four out of 40 seats in Bihar. Additionally, three out of 42 seats in West Bengal, one out of 11 seats in Chhattisgarh, and one out of two seats in Tripura will be contested. In the union territories, one out of five seats in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the sole seats in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry, will be up for grabs. Voting for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will take place across seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with the counting of votes slated for June 4. Separately, voting will also be held for 92 assembly seats in the state elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim on Friday. Of the 102 Lok Sabha seats, the BJP had won 39 in 2019, with the ruling alliance NDA bagging 12, five and three of them in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, respectively. The BJP's existing allies hold seven of them. And in Tamil Nadu, the DMK-led alliance had swept 38 of the 39 seats in 2019 general elections. A total of 56,26,108 voters are eligible to vote in 5,814 booths in this phase. Coochbehar, where Union Minister Nisith Pramanik faces TMC's Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, remains significant due to past violence and political rivalries. The deployment of central forces is higher in Coochbehar compared to the other two constituencies. The election authorities have ensured gender diversity in the management of polling stations, with some stations being exclusively manned by women. Despite the challenges posed by the recent unrest, efforts are underway to conduct the elections in a free, fair, and peaceful manner. Tripura and Nagaland In Tripura, the first phase of Lok Sabha polls will see voting for the Tripura West Parliamentary constituency and a by-poll in the Ramnagar Assembly. The main contest in Tripura West is between the BJP's Biplab Kumar Deb and state Congress president Asish Kumar Saha. With 14.61 lakh eligible voters, including 7.33 lakh males and 7.28 lakh females, the constituency has 1682 polling booths. Central paramilitary forces will secure all booths, with webcasting from each. J-K: Udhampur LC seat in action amid ceasefire The Udhampur seat in Jammu and Kashmir will go to polls on Friday in the first phase of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. In view of the ongoing ceasefire between India and Pakistan and the heavy deployment of paramilitary forces, the voting process is expected to be peaceful in 2,637 polling stations in the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, a senior election official said. Union Minister Jitendra Singh is eyeing a third consecutive term in the constituency after winning the seat for BJP in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, facing a major challenge from Congress candidate Choudhary Lal Singh, who had also won the seat twice in 2004 and 2009. Democratic Progressive Azad Party's (DPAP) candidate G M Saroori, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Amit Kumar and six independents will also be contesting the elections from the Udhampur constituency. According to officials, there are 16,23,195 eligible voters. Among them, 845,283 are men, 777,899 are women and 13 are third-gender voters. There are a total of 84,468 potential first-time voters, aged 1819, of whom 45,825 are men, 38,641 are women and two are third genders, the officials said. Lone Puducherry segment all set for three-way fight The fate of the 26 candidates in fray for the Lok Sabha polls will be sealed on Friday when voters spread across four regions will pick the lone MP from this union territory, where the fight is largely confined between the ruling BJP and Congress. BJP leader and Home Minister A Namassivayam, fielded on behalf of the AINRC-BJP combine, will face off Congress MP and PCC president V Vaithilingam, while AIADMK's G Tamizhvendhan is also testing his luck as a debutant. The Union Territory has a total of 10,23,699 voters spread over Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions. Andaman's lone seat in action The lone seat in Andaman and Nicobar Islands will see 3.15 lakh voters get an opportunity to exercise their franchise. A total of 12 candidates, including two women and five independents, are in the fray for the polls. Of the 3.15 lakh voters, 1.64 lakh are men and 1.51 lakh are women, while there are four third-gender voters. The electorate also includes 39 voters from the Great Nicobarese tribe of the Strait Islands, 68 members of the Onge tribe at Hut Bay and 98 members of the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar Island. Special polling stations have been established for them. This time, the saffron party has nominated Bishnu Pada Ray as its candidate, while the Congress has fielded its sitting MP, Kuldeep Rai Sharma. Ray was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1999, when he defeated Congress candidate Sharma by 2,990 votes. He was re-elected in 2009 and again in 2014. JAIPUR : Stoutly defending the governments reservation schemes, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, at a rally in Rajasthans Alwar, launched a scathing attack on Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, accusing them of nepotism. While Prime Minister Modi advocates Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao (protect and educate daughter), Congress seems to have only one agenda, Son bachao and make him PM. Sonia Gandhis singular focus is on propelling Rahul to the PMs chair, neglecting the aspirations of the youth, Shah said. Shah likened Rahul to a project that has been launched multiple times but has failed. Rahul has been launched 20 times and failed every time. The Congress now struggles even to launch him, he said. Addressing concerns about the BJPs stance on reservation, Shah said, The BJP staunchly supports reservation for Dalits, tribals and backward classes. The Congress is spreading misinformation that we intend to abolish reservation. The Prime Minister himself is a strong advocate for reservation. Shahs assertion came in the backdrop of the Congress election manifesto promise of bringing a constitutional amendment to raise the 50 per cent cap on reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs. The Congress has also said a caste census will be undertaken if it is voted to power. The BJP leader alleged that the Congress did injustice to the backward classes for years. It kept the Kaka Kalelkar report suppressed, kept the Mandal Commission report suppressed. Modi came and worked to give constitutional recognition to the OBC Commission. Modi has done the work of giving 27% reservation to the OBC community in all recruitments at the Centre, Shah said. Shah lamented Alwar constituencys links to the incidents of cow slaughter in recent years. He also mentioned the controversial Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project scheme (ERCP) aimed at supplying water to Alwar. The ERCP is going to be completed soon. This is a guarantee of the Modi government, he said. Shah asserted that the BJP government in Rajasthan has moved towards ensuring womens safety and ending appeasement. He also highlighted the association of BJPs Alwar candidate Bhupender Yadav with him both in the party organisation and the government. Bhupender Yadav was nominated from the seat after the previous Alwar MP Mahant Balaknath won the assembly elections held recently. Yadav will be contesting against Congress candidate Lalit Yadav, who has secured victory in the seat 11 times. Lalit has labelled Bhupendra, originally from Ajmer, as an outsider.

The company intends to come out with launches worth Rs 15,000 crore in the coming period, Chief Executive Officer Rajat Kathuria told NDTV Profit in an interview. The company expects to clock pre-sales of Rs 9,500 crore in the current fiscal, implying a growth potential of 2530%, he said. Puravankara The company reported a stellar performance in fiscal 2024, backed by 112% growth in pre-sales, followed by 62% growth in collections. On this higher base, the company expects to continue with these growth numbers, Abhishek Kapoor, group chief executive at Puravankara Ltd., told NDTV Profit. However, compared to the other real estate firms, the average realisation showed a modest growth of 2% year-on-year to Rs 7,916 per square feet during the year. The growth in realisation remained on the lower side as the Chennai project clocked an average realisation of Rs 3,000 per square feet, Kapoor said. Godrej Properties Godrej Properties Ltd.'s sales booking rose 84% year-on-year to a record of Rs 22,500 crore in the last financial year, compared to its revised guidance of Rs 20,000 crore for FY24, according to an exchange filing. This was led by four key project launches, including Godrej Zenith in the National Capital Region, Godrej Reserve in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Godrej Aristocrat launched in the third quarter, and Godrej Tropical Isle in the second quarter, achieving a booking value of over Rs 2,000 crore during the year. The company's pre-sales stood at Rs 22,500 crore in FY24, about 26% higher than Ambit estimates and 61% above managements annual guidance, said Karan Khanna, research analyst at Ambit Capital. The brokerage expects this momentum to continue with build in pre-sales of Rs 23,300 crore and Rs 27,400 crore in FY25 and FY26, respectively. However, the brokerage maintains a 'sell' rating due to an unfavourable valuation. The target price has been set at Rs 1,820 per share, implying 6 times one-year forward P/B and a downside of 29.6% to Monday's closing price. In contrast, Jefferies India maintains a 'buy' rating on the company with a target price of Rs 3,175 apiece, implying an upside of 17.3% to yesterday's closing price. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday favoured remission to an ailing 96-year-old convict who is serving life term in the 1993 train blast case in Rajasthan and is currently on parole, saying continued incarceration is like capital punishment. Habib Ahmed Khan had moved the top court seeking permanent parole given his deteriorating health condition and age, and a bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan asked the Rajasthan government to consider his case from the human rights angle. The counsel for Khan said he has been in jail for over 27 years after which he was granted parole thrice. The third parole is being now extended by this court from time to time. The bench, which perused the medical reports of Khan, said at this juncture what purpose will be served by his incarceration. Just see his medical report, where will he go. It's the worst. Yes, he was convicted for a terror offence but he was not awarded capital punishment. Continued incarceration for him is like capital punishment, the bench told Additional Solicitor General Vikramjeet Banerjee, appearing for the Rajasthan government. The bench asked Banerjee to consider his remission and see the case from a human rights angle. The ASG submitted that for remission, the convict has to make an application to the state government but in the instant case, his conviction for terror offence would be a hindrance. Then what is Article 21 in the Constitution for, Justice Oka told the ASG, adding that Khan can neither walk nor see properly according to his medical reports. Justice Bhuyan said that at 96, Khan is just counting his days and the law cannot be so insensitive. Banerjee said, This court has all the powers in the world and if it were to use the power under Article 142 of the Constitution for remission, then I would urge not to do so. Because remission can only be granted by the state government. Justice Oka said, Not all the powers in the world but all the powers under the Constitution. Ultimately, there has to be some balance. The bench asked Banerjee to seek instruction on whether Khan could be granted remission or permanent parole and listed the matter after two weeks. Khan was arrested in 1994 in connection with a series of train blasts in 1993 and was convicted in 2004 by the Ajmer trial court along with 14 others under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). Khan's conviction and life sentence were upheld by the top court in 2016. He was lodged in Jaipur jail before being granted parole in 2021 by the top court. In August 2018, the Rajasthan High Court granted Khan parole for the first time for 20 days while taking into consideration his age and the fact that a co-accused in the same case Asfaq Khan was granted parole. Khan was again granted parole for 20 days in 2020 with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was granted third parole in February 2021 by the high court for three weeks, which is being extended by the Supreme Court till date, due to his deteriorating health

Two arrested for killing relative after drunken brawl in Gurugram City police arrested two men for allegedly beating their relative -- a Rajasthan native -- to death here on Holi in the Kherki Daula area following a drunken brawl, police said on Saturday. ''I was living with my husband and children in a tent near Rampura village for the last two months. In the evening of March 24 on Holi, my husband Sonu Bagaria brought some liquor while she had prepared mutton curry,'' Padma said in her complaint. Padma said both of them consumed liquor and around 8 pm, their relatives -- Pradhan, Ramkishan, Teenu alias Siyaram -- reached their tent. After they too drank alcohol, a brawl broke out and Sonu was brutally thrashed by the three relatives, she alleged. ''When we were taking him to our native place in the car he succumbed to injuries on the way,'' Padma said. Rajasthan Police registered a zero FIR at Sarana Police Station and forwarded it to Gurugram police. An FIR was registered against all three accused under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) at Kherki Daula Police Station on Thursday, police said. Two of the three accused have been arrested from Pataudi, police said. ''We are questioning the accused and are conducting raids to nab the third accused who is still absconding. Further probe is underway,'' said Sub-Inspector Lalit Kumar, the investigating officer.

The ECI has featured actor Ayushmann Khurrana in its campaign video that encourages the youth to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming elections. Khurrana, known for critically-acclaimed films such as Andhadhun, Dream Girl, Bareilly Ki Barfi and Dum Laga Ke Haisha, said it is imperative that the youth participate in deciding the future of the country. Everyone must vote and be conscious citizens by participating in the process of nation-building. The power to choose the leaders who will represent the country, represent our needs in the Parliament rests with us, the actor said, adding: Every vote counts and every vote is important. LS polls: Amit Shah holds road show in Rajasthan's Sikar Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday conducted a massive road show in Sikar Lok Sabha constituency, campaigning for the BJP candidate from the seat. Sikar is also the hometown of Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra, whose assembly constituency, Laxmangarh, falls under the Sikar Lok Sabha constituency. Of the eight assembly segments under Sikar Lok Sabha constituency, five are held by the Congress and three by the BJP. Lok Sabha elections in Rajasthan will be held in two phases on April 19 and 26, and Sikar is among 12 seats where elections will be held in the first phase on April 19.
