Dry spell impact: Darjeeling tea prices shoots up 10-15% this season

Darjeeling tea has been facing nature's wrath for quite some time now. In 2022, Darjeeling tea production was 6.93 million kg. In 2023, it dwindled to 6.18 million kg. Violent agitations in the hills in 2017 and recent resurgence in the demand for Gorkhaland ahead of the ongoing elections, too, have impacted the gardens and their profitability in a big way even as demand is growing within the country, industry insiders said.

Travel scams on rise in Kochi

KOCHI: International tourism is witnessing a rise this summer season and so are frauds in the name of tourism in Kerala. Four cases of fraudsters swindling money from people offering attractive low-budget tour packages were registered in Ernakulam district last month. Recently, a woman approached Ernakulam Central police after she lost Rs 30,000 to a fraudster. According to the police, the victim saw an advertisement for a cheap tour package for Kashmir in January. The agent had offered the package for just Rs 30,000, including flight tickets, for April. However, after taking the money, neither the promised tickets were delivered nor the accommodation was arranged. Thus, she approached us with a complaint and we have registered a case, a police officer at the Ernakulam Central police station said. Meanwhile, Ernakulam South police have arrested a travel agency manager in Kochi who syphoned off money from several people offering flight tickets at cheaper prices. Paulose Mathew, chairman of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), Kerala chapter, said the fake tour agents attract customers mostly through social media platforms. The scammers mainly operate through social media platforms. They offer attractive schemes that would make potential travellers think about visiting foreign countries instead of domestic tourist destinations for a cheaper price. Recently, I saw an advertisement on a social media platform that offered a week-long Japan tour package for just Rs 1.5 lakh. We have been working in this sector for the past several decades, and it is impossible to chart a trip to Japan for less than Rs 3 lakh, he said. Paulose said people should cross-check the genuineness of the agency before giving money. Most tour agencies are also involved in air-ticketing activities. They will have a licence from IATA for the same. People should visit the offices of these agencies and also check on their experience in the travel and tourism sector. People should also read about the experiences of their customers. Fraudsters also approach the victims using the names of reputed agencies, he said. Interestingly, this season, more people are exploring tourist destinations in the northeastern states. On the international circuit, many are opting for Central Asian countries and Vietnam. The outbound tourism sector this year has overcome the recession during the Covid-19 era. With direct flights from Kochi, Vietnam is becoming a popular destination. Similarly, many are preferring Central Asian countries to spend their vacation period. In the domestic circle, tour packages covering Darjeeling and Gangtok have many takers now. Kashmir has always been a preferred destination during the summer vacations, he added.

Remembering Tenzing Norgay: A Legacy Ascending Beyond Everest's Summit

As the crisp Himalayan winds carry whispers of remembrance, May 9th marks the departure of a legend whose spirit still echoes among the snow-capped peaks. Tenzing Norgay, the indomitable Sherpa who etched his name into history alongside Sir Edmund Hillary, continues to inspire generations with his unparalleled feats of courage and resilience. Born on May 15, 1914, in the shadow of towering mountains, Tenzing Norgay's journey was destined to be extraordinary. From humble beginnings in the rugged terrain of Khumbu, his path intertwined with the allure of Everest, beckoning him with a call only the brave could heed. Norgay's ascent to greatness was not without its trials. In his youth, he navigated the treacherous landscapes of the Himalayas, honing his skills amidst the whispers of prayer flags and the silent wisdom of ancient glaciers. His arrival in Darjeeling, a gateway to adventure, marked the beginning of a saga that would transcend borders and redefine human potential. The annals of mountaineering history bear witness to Norgay's unwavering determination. From the frostbitten slopes of Everest to the jagged peaks of Nanga Parbat, he faced nature's fury with a stoic resolve, earning the respect of fellow climbers and Sherpas alike. Yet, it was on that fateful day of May 29, 1953, that Norgay and Hillary etched their names into eternity. The conquest of Everest was not merely a triumph of human endeavor but a testament to the enduring spirit of camaraderie. As Norgay and Hillary stood atop the world, their victory resonated beyond the icy summit, symbolizing the triumph of unity over adversity. Beyond the accolades and adulation, Norgay remained a humble custodian of his heritage. His efforts to uplift the Sherpa community echoed his belief in the power of education and empowerment. Through the Himalayan Trust and other initiatives, he paved the way for future generations to pursue their dreams, ensuring that his legacy would endure like the eternal snows of Everest. As we commemorate Tenzing Norgay's legacy on this solemn occasion, let us not only celebrate his triumphs but also reflect on the values he embodied. In a world fraught with challenges, his unwavering spirit serves as a guiding light, reminding us that the summit is not merely a destination but a journey of the soul. Though Tenzing Norgay may have bid farewell to this mortal realm, his legacy continues to inspire countless souls to reach for the stars, to scale the summits of their dreams, and to embrace the indomitable spirit that resides within us all. As the winds of change sweep across the Himalayas, his name echoes through the valleys, a beacon of hope for generations yet to come. Patna emerges as India's most flood-prone city, reveals recent study

Patna emerges as India's most flood-prone city, reveals recent study Patna experiences the worst floods in India, followed by West Bengal's Murshidabad and Maharashtra's Thane, according to a district-level flood severity index (DFSI) developed by researchers at IIT-Delhi and IIT-Roorkee. The index takes into account the historical severity of floods based on the number of affected people, the spread and duration of floods. The researchers said the top 10 districts where flood severity is the highest are: Patna, Murshidabad, Thane, North 24 Parganas (West Bengal), Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Ballia (Uttar Pradesh), East Champaran (Bihar), and East Medinipur (West Bengal). These are followed by Muzaffarnagar (Bihar), Lakhimpur (Assam), Kota (Rajasthan), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Malda (West Bengal), Rajkot (Gujarat), Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Aurangabad (Bihar), Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), Darjeeling (West Bengal), Dibrugarh (Assam), Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh), Chamoli (Uttarakhand), West Champaran (Bihar), Amravati (Maharashtra), Medinipur West (West Bengal), and Samastipur (Bihar). Though Chamoli in Uttarakhand does not face recurrent floods, it appears on this list because of a few isolated highly damaging flood events. Among the 30 districts facing the highest risk of floods, 17 are in the Ganga basin and three are in the Brahmaputra basin. Among all the Indian river basins, the Ganga basin has the highest population, and its high flood proneness is worrisome, said the researchers, including Manabendra Saharia, an assistant professor at IIT-Delhi. Assam experiences the highest number of floods in India, having faced more than 800 flood events over 56 years. The other flood-prone states, in descending order of flood events, include Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Data from 1967 to 2023 shows that Thiruvananthapuram has experienced more than 231 floods or more than four events per year on average. Five districts -- Thiruvananthapuram, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Kamrup, and Nagaon -- have been categorised as ''severely flood-prone,'' having recorded more than 178 floods, or more than three events per year on average. The researchers said localised intense rainfall events are likely to rise in the future due to climate change, and therefore, more flash floods are expected. Under the warming climate, the frequency of cyclones will increase, and coastal and nearby inland areas will face more instances of intense rainfall and floods. It is also likely that areas that are not currently flood-prone may begin to see flooding. The researchers said human fatality due to floods is nearly stable or has come down in recent times due to better management despite an increase in the population in India. The number of deaths is around 1,000 per year since 2015, the data showed.

PM Modi Faces Zero Allegations Of Corruption: Amit Shah

Kolkata : Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday pointing out corruption in West Bengal and Jharkhand asserted that allegation of even 25paise never surfaced against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 23 years of political career. Addressing a rally at Bardhaman-Durgapur parliamentary constituency, in support of BJP candidate Dilip Ghosh after leading a road show at Krishnanagar in Nadia, Shah said, `50 crore in cash was found at the houses of a Bengal minister and in Jharkhand, `350 crore in cash was recovered from the house of a Congress MP and last night `30 crore was seized from a ministers house, and added, shouldnt those who looted the money be put behind bars? Narendra Modi has 23 years of serving as chief minister and Prime Minister, but there has been no allegation of corruption of even 25paise against him. Shah also accused TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of driving away industries from the state and promised to revive industries. Bardhaman-Durgapur used to be an industrial town. But the goons of Mamata Didi destroyed the entrepreneurial environment here, he said. Shah said, Im giving you a Modi Guarantee. Elect Dilip da, BJP will take the initiative to reopen all the ventures lying shut at Bardhaman-Durgapur. There is a steel plant but rumours are spread that it will be shut down. But I declare that Modiji will pump in investments into the steel plant and a urea plant here and undertake its expansions. Reacting to Shahs allegations against her, TMC supremo at a TMC rally in Burdwan West said, You are talking about reopening all industries but your government also promised to give two crore jobs every year thus 20 crore jobs in 10 years. Did you give even a single job? Instead you are taking away teachers jobs. Questioning Shahs plans for the state, the Chief Minister asked the gathering, All the industries will be reopened but how? Ask them. Last time when Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri went to the polls, the Prime Minister told the public about reopening five tea gardens to get votes for BJP. Till date none of them reopened. Your words never come true; your lies are bigger than the gas balloons. On the corruption charges, she alleged, They are spending so much in advertisement because they looted so much earlier. Slamming the Election Commission of India, Banerjee said,Does anyone know where it is now? At least I cant find. Someone told me that the Model Code of Conduct has become the Modi Code of Conduct. Whatever he will say will happen.

Rinku's Rise Continues, Impresses Sourav Ganguly

Rinku's Rise Continues, Impresses Sourav Ganguly Rinku Singh shouldn't be disheartened by his exclusion from India's World T20 squad as it was pure tactical decision by team management to ask for an extra spinner taking pitches in the Caribbean into account, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said on Friday. Ganguly feels the 26-year-old, who boasts of a 176-plus strike rate in 15 T20Is and plays the role of a finisher for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, may have missed out as India wanted to go with an ''extra spinner'' keeping in mind the spinning tracks in the West Indies. ''It's West Indies. The wickets may be slow and assist spin so they (selectors) wanted to go with another spinner. Maybe because of that Rinku didn't get an opportunity but it's just the beginning for Rinku,'' Ganguly said at the Trophy unveiling ceremony of the Bengal Pro T20 League. India play their group stage matches in the USA, opening their campaign against Ireland on June 5. Super Eight onwards the tournament will be held in the Caribbean countries. Ganguly expected India and Australia to dominate the tournament as they did in the 50-over World Cup last year. ''India and Australia the two best teams of the tournament. I'm sure they will do the same thing in the USA and the West Indies,'' Ganguly said. On the Indian squad, Ganguly said: ''It's a fabulous squad, they are all match winners. All 15 are good enough to be selected, I'm sure Rohit (Sharma) and Rahul (Dravid) will pick the best.'' Meanwhile all the eight franchises and their marquee players in the Bengal Pro T20 League were also announced. The inaugural edition of the league will take place at Eden Gardens and Jadavpur University Salt Lake Campus ground from June 11-28. The Teams Kolkata Royal Tigers (areas: Kolkata & Hooghly) (marquee players: Abhishek Porel and Mita Paul). Harbour Diamonds (North & South 24 Parganas) (Manoj Tiwary and Sukanya Panda). Rashmi Medinipur Wizards (Medinipur and Jhargram) (Abhimanyu Easwaran & Richa Ghosh). Servotec Siliguri Strikers (Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Kalimpong) (Akash Deep and Priyanka Bala). Adamas Howrah Warriors (Howrah, Purulia and Bankura) (Anustup Majumdar and Dhara Gujjar). Malda Sobisco Smashers (Dinajpur and Malda) (Mukesh Kumar & Rishita Basu). Drum or disc brake, whose control is better, understand the difference

When it comes to braking systems in vehicles, two main types dominate the market: drum brakes and disc brakes. Both systems serve the same purpose to slow down or stop the vehicle but they do so in different ways. Let's delve into the intricacies of each system and compare their performance and control. Drum Brakes: Traditional and Reliable 1. Anatomy of Drum Brakes Drum brakes consist of several key components, including brake shoes, a brake drum, wheel cylinder, springs, and an adjuster mechanism. 2. How Drum Brakes Work When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forces the brake shoes to press against the inner surface of the brake drum. This friction generates heat, which slows down the rotation of the drum and, consequently, the wheel. 3. Control and Performance While drum brakes are effective for everyday driving and provide adequate stopping power, they are prone to overheating during prolonged or heavy use. This can lead to a phenomenon known as brake fade, where the braking efficiency decreases over time. Disc Brakes: Modern and Efficient 1. Anatomy of Disc Brakes Disc brakes consist of a brake rotor (or disc), brake pads, calipers, and hydraulic components such as master cylinders and brake lines. 2. How Disc Brakes Work When you apply the brakes, hydraulic pressure forces the brake pads to clamp onto both sides of the spinning rotor. The resulting friction slows down the rotation of the rotor and, consequently, the wheel. 3. Control and Performance Disc brakes offer several advantages over drum brakes, including better heat dissipation, which reduces the risk of brake fade. They also provide more consistent performance, even under heavy braking conditions. Comparison: Control and Performance 1. Heat Dissipation Disc brakes have an edge over drum brakes in terms of heat dissipation. The open design of disc brakes allows for better airflow, which helps dissipate heat more efficiently. 2. Brake Fade Due to their design and improved heat dissipation, disc brakes are less prone to brake fade compared to drum brakes. This makes them a preferred choice for high-performance vehicles and heavy-duty applications. 3. Maintenance While both types of brakes require periodic maintenance, disc brakes are generally easier to service and repair. Components such as brake pads and rotors can be replaced individually, whereas drum brakes may require more extensive adjustments and replacements. In conclusion, both drum brakes and disc brakes have their merits, but disc brakes offer superior control and performance, especially in demanding driving conditions. While drum brakes remain a cost-effective option for many vehicles, disc brakes have become the standard choice for modern automobiles due to their efficiency and reliability. Which flour should we eat in summer? Experts know important things from this

When the summer heat kicks in, our dietary preferences often shift towards lighter, refreshing foods. But have you ever considered how the type of flour you consume can impact your summer meals? Experts in nutrition and culinary arts have valuable insights into this topic, shedding light on the importance of selecting the right flour for the warmer months. Understanding the Impact of Flour on Summer Recipes 1. Flour as a Staple Ingredient Flour, a versatile and essential ingredient in culinary endeavors, serves as the backbone for countless recipes across diverse cuisines. Whether it's the crust of a pie, the fluffiness of a cake, or the chewiness of a pasta dish, flour plays a foundational role in creating the textures and structures we love in our favorite foods. In summer, when outdoor gatherings and picnics are commonplace, flour-based dishes like sandwiches, wraps, and baked goods take center stage, making the choice of flour particularly significant. 2. Influence on Texture and Flavor The selection of flour can significantly influence the sensory experience of a dish, impacting both its texture and flavor profile. Different types of flour possess distinct characteristics that can either enhance or detract from the overall quality of a recipe. In the warmer months, when lighter, more delicate flavors are often preferred, opting for flours with subtle taste profiles becomes essential. Moreover, the texture of flour-based dishes can also play a role in their enjoyment, with lighter, airier textures being more appealing during the heat of summer. 3. Consideration for Health and Nutrition Beyond taste and texture, the nutritional composition of flour is another crucial factor to consider, especially for individuals mindful of their dietary intake. While some flours offer significant health benefits, such as high fiber content and essential nutrients, others may be more refined and less nutritionally dense. Making informed choices about the types of flour consumed can contribute to overall health and well-being, aligning with the principles of a balanced diet. Best Flour Choices for Summer 1. Whole Wheat Flour Rich in Fiber: Unlike refined flours, whole wheat flour retains the bran and germ of the wheat kernel, making it a rich source of dietary fiber. Fiber plays a vital role in digestive health, promoting regularity and aiding in weight management. Nutrient Dense: In addition to fiber, whole wheat flour contains essential nutrients such as B vitamins, iron, and magnesium. These micronutrients are critical for various bodily functions, including energy production and immune function. Adds Depth to Flavors: Whole wheat flour imparts a slightly nutty flavor and a denser texture to baked goods, adding complexity and depth to their taste profiles. This characteristic makes it well-suited for hearty bread, muffins, and cookies enjoyed during summer gatherings. 2. Almond Flour Gluten-Free Option: For individuals with gluten sensitivities or those following a gluten-free diet, almond flour offers a suitable alternative to traditional wheat flour. Made from finely ground almonds, this flour is naturally free from gluten, making it safe for consumption by those with celiac disease. Light and Moist Texture: Almond flour produces baked goods with a moist, tender crumb, perfect for summer desserts like cakes, cupcakes, and pastries. Its inherent richness adds depth to baked goods without the need for additional fats or oils. Healthy Fats: Almonds are a nutrient-dense food, packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, protein, and antioxidants. Incorporating almond flour into summer recipes not only enhances their nutritional profile but also contributes to overall well-being. 3. Coconut Flour Low in Carbs: Coconut flour is renowned for its low carbohydrate content, making it a favored choice among individuals following low-carb or ketogenic diets. Unlike wheat flour, which is relatively high in carbs, coconut flour provides an alternative for those seeking to manage their carbohydrate intake. Adds Sweetness: With its subtly sweet flavor and aroma, coconut flour can impart a delicate sweetness to baked goods and savory dishes alike. This natural sweetness allows for the reduction of added sugars in recipes, promoting healthier eating habits. Gluten-Free and Paleo-Friendly: As a gluten-free and paleo-friendly flour option, coconut flour caters to individuals with dietary restrictions or preferences. Its versatility in both sweet and savory applications makes it a valuable ingredient in summer cooking and baking. 4. Spelt Flour Ancient Grain Goodness: Spelt flour, derived from the ancient grain spelt, offers a unique taste profile reminiscent of traditional wheat flour but with a slightly nuttier flavor. This ancient grain has been cultivated for centuries and is known for its robust flavor and nutritional benefits. Easier Digestion: Some individuals find spelt flour easier to digest compared to conventional wheat flour, thanks to its lower gluten content and different gluten structure. For those with mild gluten sensitivities or digestive issues, spelt flour may offer a more gentle alternative. Rich in Protein: Spelt flour boasts a higher protein content than wheat flour, making it an excellent choice for individuals looking to boost their protein intake. Protein is essential for muscle repair and growth, making spelt flour a valuable addition to summer recipes, particularly those aimed at supporting an active lifestyle. Expert Tips for Flour Selection 1. Experimentation is Key When it comes to flour selection, don't be afraid to experiment with different varieties to find the ones that best suit your taste preferences and dietary needs. Each type of flour offers unique characteristics that can enhance the flavor and texture of your favorite recipes. 2. Pay Attention to Consistency Consider the desired consistency of your dishes when selecting flour. Some flours, such as almond and coconut flour, have unique textures that may require adjustments in baking techniques or additional ingredients to achieve the desired results. By understanding the properties of each flour, you can tailor your recipes to meet your culinary goals. 3. Balance Nutrition and Flavor Striking a balance between nutritional benefits and flavor enhancement is essential when choosing flour for summer recipes. While whole grain flours offer superior nutritional value, they may have a more pronounced flavor that may not be suitable for all dishes. Consider blending flours or incorporating complementary ingredients to achieve the perfect balance of taste and nutrition. 4. Be Mindful of Allergies For individuals with food allergies or intolerances, such as gluten or nut allergies, it's crucial to carefully read ingredient labels and choose flours that align with dietary restrictions. Fortunately, there are numerous allergy-friendly flour options available, allowing everyone to enjoy delicious summer recipes without compromise. Selecting the right flour is an essential aspect of creating delicious and nutritious summer meals that cater to diverse tastes and dietary preferences. Whether you opt for the hearty wholesomeness of whole wheat flour, the delicate sweetness of almond flour, the subtle coconut flavor of coconut flour, or the ancient grain goodness of spelt flour, there are plenty of options to explore. By considering factors such as flavor, texture, and nutritional value, you can elevate your culinary creations and make the most of the summer season. It's TMC's 'Bihari Babu' vs BJP's 'Sardarji' in West Bengal's Asansol

ASANOL: Reopening factories closed for years, addressing drinking water scarcity in rural pockets and reining in the illegal mining menace in abandoned collieries are the primary issues for the people of Asansol Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal. The region cradles the mining and industrial belt of the state, with Raniganj, Pandaveswar and Jamuria assembly segments housing coal mines and Kulti serving as the home to some of the bigger factories. Asansol, which borders Jharkhand, has a significant percentage of the Hindi-speaking population, mostly migrant workers from Bihar and UP employed in the mines and factories. While the TMC has repeated Bollywood superstar Shatrughan Sinha aka 'Bihari Babu' as its candidate for this seat, the BJP settled for its veteran leader Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia who was born and raised in the city. The CPI(M) has fielded Jahanara Khan, a debutant in Lok Sabha polls, in the seat that is also home to a fair number of tribals. Sinha won the 2022 by-elections here by over 3 lakh votes after BJP MP Babul Supriyo vacated the seat, which he secured in 2014 and 2019, and switched over to the TMC. Sinha expressed confidence about retaining the seat by a greater margin this time. I will win more support from people in the constituency this election, he told PTI. Left nominee Khan, a two-time MLA from Jamuria, alleged that neither Sinha nor Supriyo had done much to alleviate the problems of the locals. The poorer tribals and minorities in the rural areas are suffering from tremendous drinking water scarcity, but little has been done so far to solve that crisis, she said. Alleging that illegal mining from the abandoned collieries in the region is rampant, she said the menace must be stopped to prevent land subsidence and mudslides which claim lives almost every year. Acknowledging the rural water crisis, TMC's Pandaveswar MLA Narendranath Chakraborty said water level depletes in the summer months in the mine region which, he maintained, was a atural occurrence. We are working towards providing water connection to homes, and reservoirs are being built in every block, he said, adding that water gets supplied through tankers in many places as a stop-gap measure. Sambhu Majhi, a resident of Kulti, said that he wanted factories, which have been closed for years over issues ranging from militant trade unionism to lack of timely modernisation, reopened. If the factories are back in operation, our children will not have to migrate in search of livelihood, he said. Several well-known factories like those of Sen-Raleigh and Asansol Glass have downed their shutters over the years. According to Ajay Ghosh of Dishergarh, illegal sand mining from Damodar is also on the rise and needs to be stopped. The BJP took a while to officially name Ahluwalia, fondly called 'Sardarji' by many, for the Asansol seat after Bhojpuri singer Pawan Singh stepped aside from the contest. In the 2019 elections, Ahluwalia won the neighbouring Bardhaman-Durgapur seat, where the BJP has fielded its former state president Dilip Ghosh this time. Ahluwalia, also a former Rajya Sabha MP, had won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat in northern West Bengal in 2014. He won the 2019 elections by a slender margin of 18,540 votes and managed to deliver for his party only one out of the seven assembly seats in Bardhaman-Durgapur during the 2021 state polls. Ahluwalia faces the litmus test of obfuscating TMC's gains in Asansol, where five out of seven assembly segments went to the Mamata Banerjee-led party in 2021. During a recent election rally in Kulti, Banerjee took a dig at Ahluwalia and accused him of playing the vanishing act from Bardhaman-Durgapur during the last five years. He could manage to get a ticket for this seat after putting in much effort, the TMC supremo claimed. Local BJP leader Jitendra Tiwari claimed that having an experienced campaigner like Ahluwalia in Asansol has boosted the morale of his party's workers to reclaim the seat. Brushing aside the TMC allegation of Ahluwalia's absenteeism, Tiwari asked, That way, how many times did we see Shatrughan Sinha in Asansol in the last two years? A two-term BJP MP from Patna Sahib, Sinha had joined the Congress ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and switched over to the TMC in 2022. Among his many films, Sinha had co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan in 'Kaala Patthar', a 1979 Bollywood hit based on the Chasnala coal mine tragedy in neighbouring Dhanbad. Calling Sinha an acting legend, the Pandaveswar MLA said the star of yesteryears still commands a crazy fan following. As an MP, he worked for Asansol and MPLAD funds were properly utilised for the welfare of people, he said. Confident about a formidable margin, Chakraborty said the leader meant business when it came to development and maintained a polite demeanor with people. Local CPI(M) leader Partha Mukherjee claimed that people would vote against the ideological bankruptcy of TMC and BJP. All anti-TMC and anti-BJP forces will come together to defeat them and we are sure that Jahanara Khan will win Asansol, he said. Asansol goes to polls in the fourth phase on May 13.

Despite being a woman, Mamata tried to protect Sheikh Shahjahan, says BJP chief Nadda

Despite being a woman, Mamata tried to protect Sheikh Shahjahan, says BJP chief Nadda Addressing a rally in West Bengal's Ranaghat on Sunday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee saying she protected Sheikh Shahjahan though atrocities were committed against women in Sandeshkhali. Atrocities were committed against women. They were insulted in Sandeshkhali, but despite being a woman CM Mamata Banerjee kept on trying to protect Sheikh Shahjahan. Despite being a woman, she did not think about mothers or sisters, he said. Lashing out further, Nadda said, TMC goons and intruders are encroaching on lands of poor farmers. He questioned the people saying, Do you want this type of government do you want to send such representatives to Delhi? They should be wiped out of Kolkata as well. Earlier, talking up hopes of the lotus blooming in Mamata's Bengal, Nadda said the BJP will register thumping wins in the more than 35 constituencies in the state as the people were fed with the 'anarchy' in the state under the ruling Trinamool Congress. Coming down heavily on the TMC regime over the alleged abuse and excesses on women, as well as charges of land-grab in Sandeshkhali, Nadda said it was 'painful' to see women coming out on the streets and saying that they were being threatened by goons enjoying the patronage of the ruling party in the state. In a personalised video address, the BJP national chief said, We have seen how under the Mamata Banerjee government, the state is being run by strongmen and goons, and how the likes of (Sheikh) Shahjahan were intimidating women and posing a threat to their safety in Sandeshkhali. The prevailing situation, in a nutshell, is sensitive and painful. Teams from central investigating agencies, which went to Sandeshkhali to protect the honour and dignity of women, were thwarted and attacked. Voting for three Lok Sabha seats - Balurghat, Raiganj, and Darjeeling-concluded in the second phase of the parliamentary election held on Friday. Voting in the state for 42 parliamentary members is set for all seven phases in the ongoing general elections that commenced on April 19 and will conclude on June 1. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won 22 seats, while the BJP won 18 seats. Congress emerged victorious in two seats. (ANI)

ALERT! Stress may cause risk of reduced fertility, dream of becoming parents may remain unfulfilled

Stress, a pervasive aspect of modern life, has been implicated in a myriad of health issues. However, its impact on fertility is a topic gaining increasing attention. Research suggests that stress can significantly affect reproductive health, potentially jeopardizing the dream of parenthood for many individuals and couples. Understanding the Connection The link between stress and fertility revolves around the intricate interplay of hormones and physiological responses within the body. When individuals experience stress, the body releases cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels can disrupt the delicate balance of reproductive hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, essential for conception and maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Effects on Men For men, chronic stress can lead to a decrease in testosterone levels and sperm production. Additionally, stress-related lifestyle factors like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor diet choices can further compound fertility issues. Impacts on Women In women, stress may disrupt the menstrual cycle, leading to irregular periods or even amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). Moreover, stress can interfere with ovulation, making it more challenging to conceive. Chronic stress has also been associated with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, which can impair fertility. The Role of Psychological Factors Beyond its physiological effects, stress can also exert a significant toll on mental health, further complicating the fertility journey. The emotional burden of infertility can exacerbate stress levels, creating a vicious cycle that adversely affects overall well-being. Psychological Distress The emotional rollercoaster of infertility can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and inadequacy. The pressure to conceive coupled with societal expectations and stigma surrounding infertility can intensify psychological distress, placing additional strain on individuals and relationships. Impact on Relationships Coping with infertility can strain even the strongest of relationships. The stress of fertility treatments, coupled with disappointment and uncertainty, may lead to communication breakdowns, feelings of resentment, and diminished intimacy between partners. Managing Stress for Fertility While infertility can be a challenging journey, there are strategies individuals and couples can employ to mitigate the impact of stress and optimize their chances of conception. Mind-Body Techniques Mindfulness meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can help alleviate stress and promote relaxation. These practices not only reduce cortisol levels but also enhance overall emotional well-being. Seeking Support Joining support groups or seeking counseling can provide a safe space to share experiences, gain perspective, and access coping strategies. Connecting with others who understand the challenges of infertility can offer invaluable support and encouragement. Prioritizing Self-Care Engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment outside of the fertility journey is crucial for maintaining balance and perspective. Whether it's pursuing hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or practicing self-care rituals, prioritizing one's well-being is essential. Navigating the Path to Parenthood In the pursuit of parenthood, navigating the challenges of infertility can be overwhelming, particularly in the face of chronic stress. Recognizing the impact of stress on fertility and taking proactive steps to manage it is essential for optimizing reproductive health and well-being. By addressing both the physiological and psychological aspects of stress, individuals and couples can cultivate resilience, strengthen relationships, and increase their chances of realizing their dream of becoming parents. 2nd phase LS polls: Peaceful, 71.84% voting in WB

Kolkata: The second phase of the Lok Sabha Election, covering three parliamentary constituencies in the northern parts of West Bengal, remained by and large peaceful amid an average voter's turnout of 71.84%. The three seats are Darjeeling, Raiganj in North Dinajpur and Balurghat in South Dinajpur which went to the BJP in 2019. Two BJP candidates Sukanta Majumdar of Balurghat, who is also the state party chief, and Raju Bista of Darjeeling however faced protests by the Trinamul Congress workers in their constituencies over the allegations of electoral malpractices. The TMC also accused the central forces, deployed for security, of harassment. It posted on X-handle, Yet again, central forces are being used to undermine the democratic process in Bengal! Multiple reports show how they disturbed voters in Balurghat's Harirampur and prevented women from voting in Raiganj's Goalpokhar. @ECISVEEP, how can you stand by while such blatant violations occur? The Border Security Force however rejected the ruling party's allegations and said, This is in response to today's tweet by All India Trinmool Congress through which it was alleged that BSF personnel were terrorising voters. It was also claimed that there is proof of threatening and harassing voters by BSF at booth No 202 of Balurghat's Batun GP. The BSF added, In this regard it is for the information of all that BSF is not deployed at Booth No 202 under Batun GP (Balurghat PC). BSF personnel are performing duties strictly adhering to its mandate as prescribed by the Election Commission of India. BSF is committed to perform duties for Free and Fair Election. On the other hand, the BJP also blamed the TMC of intimidating it's agents and workers. Hours before the polling began, a young BJP worker was found dead at a betel leaf plantation under mysterious circumstances in East Midnapore. The deceased, Dinabandhu (Dhananjay) Midya (18), was found on Thursday night in a hanging position with legs touching the ground. He was from Goramahal village at Moyna and was missing since April 24, according to the BJP which blamed the TMC for killing the teenager.

Gorkhaland Issue: Bimal Gurung Affirms Conditional Support for BJP

Gorkhaland Issue: Bimal Gurung Affirms Conditional Support for BJP GJM supremo Bimal Gurung, who recently switched allegiance from the TMC to BJP, on Wednesday said his support for the saffron camp is only on the issue of separate state of Gorkhaland. The constituency will go to polls in the second phase on April 26. ''I have good relations with the BJP only on the issue of a separate state of Gorkhaland. We (Gorkhas) have been suffering for 15 years now, and we have been assured by the BJP that we will get a separate identity. So I think we should support the BJP,'' Gurung told PTI Video in an interview. The BJP has promised a Permanent Political Solution within the next five years, and the Gurung-led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has issued a 'final ultimatum' to the saffron camp, demanding a resolution to the hill problem as a precondition for their support in the elections. Gurung said he was the one to raise the issue of a separate Gorkhaland in 2017 and had twice switched allegiance in the last few years. ''I had thought of joining the TMC for the development of the hills, but after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee became CM for the third time, she did not keep her promise and had no time to meet Gorkha leaders,'' he said. Gurung said the TMC candidate backed by BGPM won't be a factor in the polls. ''We are confident that the BJP will win the seat,'' he said. Gurung, a strong proponent of a separate state of Gorkhaland, who was on the run following the violent Gorkhaland agitation in 2017, remained an ally of the BJP till 2019. However, just months before the 2021 assembly polls, Gurung, along with his close allies, came out of hiding and pledged allegiance to the TMC. Although he returned to the hills, with the advent of new regional hill parties like Hamrao Party led by Ajoy Edwards, which won the Darjeeling Municipal polls in 2022, and Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) led by Anit Thapa, which swept the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) polls in June 2022, the GJM's clout was diminished to a large extent. Reacting to Gurung's claim, Thapa said Gopal Lama is the BGPM candidate backed by TMC, and that's why in the hills there are no flags of TMC. ''Gopal Lama is the Bhumi Putra (Son of the soil), while BJP MP Raju Bista is an outsider,'' Thapa, who is also GTA chairman, said. He said the BJP has been ''fooling the people of the hills'' with the promise of Gorkhaland. ''The BJP has said they don't believe in division; then there is no question of our demands being fulfilled, and the people of the hills are just being fooled,'' Thapa told PTI Video. The BJP has been winning the seat since 2009 with GJM's support. Bista has been re-nominated as the party's candidate for the seat for the second consecutive term. Congress-Left Front-Hamro Party alliance candidate and former president of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, Munish Tamang, a strong advocate for Gorkhaland, is also in the fray. The Darjeeling Hills, renowned for its tea, tourism, and timber industry, have experienced bouts of violence since the '80s due to the demand for a separate state of 'Gorkhaland'. The most recent agitation occurred in 2017, lasting 104 days and leaving a trail of destruction.

Poll Temperature Soars In Mountains Of Darjeeling

The misty cool weather and the breathtaking mountainsides carpeted by tea gardens are no indicator of the political climate of these hills. As the heat and election fervour rise across India, the politics in Darjeeling is no different. This man, a young Gorkha was given the ticket pretty late as there was confusion over whether the BJP would field him or former foreign secretary Harshvardhan Shringla from this seat. Eventually, his margin of four lakh votes last time and his grip over regional satraps in the area worked for him. He now has the support of major parties in the hills like the Bimal Gurung-led Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha and GNLF or Gorkha National Liberation Front, parties that propagate the idea of a separate state of Gorkhaland.

Berhampore/Kolkata: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of showing no mamata (kindness) despite having it in her name. Will continue to work for welfare of people, says former Foreign Secretary Shringla

NEW DELHI: Former Foreign Secretary and G20 Chief Coordinator Harsh Vardhan Shringla is not in the race for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, but continues to work on the ground in Darjeeling, Siliguri and neighbouring areas. My objective is to serve the people here and help them in whatever possible way from channelising the youth who are seeking employment, to working for the welfare of the elderly. I am working for the Prime Minister post retirement and reaching out to common people through the Darjeeling Welfare Society which was established nearly a decade back, Shringla told The New Indian Express . Darjeeling and the Siliguri corridor area are strategic development initiatives which have suffered due to gaps in Centre-state coordination. The Siliguri corridor abuts Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and China and connects India to South East Asia and East Asia through Myanmar. So it is of strategic significance. Besides, there is a lot that needs to be done for the local people here, he added. The locals of Darjeeling and Siliguri have been appreciative of his work in the area and were actually hoping to see him contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The locals are very appreciative of him, specially after he organised G20 events here. He has also helped the young people get jobs in the area, Sreejana C Gurung, an educationist from Mirik, told TNIE. In a job fair organised in the area a few months back, which Shringla had facilitated, nearly 270 youth were offered jobs. Meanwhile, talking about the Siliguri corridor, Shringla said this part of the country was in a position to benefit from PM Modis focus on transforming the North East. The area is now in a position where it can leverage the conjuction of national and international initiatives. Siliguri, for instance, is where the National Highways Authority of Indias Golden Quadrilateral will connect to the Asian Highway network and future BIMSTEC land connectivity initiatives, Shringla added. The Siliguri-Bagdogra is at a strategic location near Nepal and Bhutan borders and fosters cross-border trade while its fertile plains support a thriving agricultural sector. Meanwhile, even though Shringla isnt contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, there is talk of him being offered a position of significance once the electoral process is over.

Balaji said the museum preserves and showcases the rich heritage of the region's railways, featuring vintage photographs, prototypes, and signalling equipment dating back to the Nizam era. Visitors can experience the nostalgia of yesteryears through working models, historic tickets, and archival photographs, offering a vivid portrayal of the railway's evolution, he said. Among the museum's prized exhibits are prototypes such as the B777, one of the initial 4B class steam locomotives utilised in the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railways since 1881, manufactured by Sharp Stewart & Co., Glasgow, England. Another important display at the museum includes the XGM 911, a 161-ton locomotive manufactured by Beer Peacock & Co., imported by the NW Railway for shunting purposes. The museum further boasts an array of rolling stock prototypes and rescue devices utilised by the Indian Railways, offering visitors a comprehensive journey through the annals of railway history.
