KCRs protest calls find no takers in BRS

Hyderabad: BRS president and former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao is being accused of hypocrisy for ignoring farmer issues for a decade and now using the same issues and demanding immediate resolution by the Revanth Reddy government. In many instances, the BRS hasnt stood by Raos call for agitation, and the Congress government is dealing with the aftermath of his decade of neglect of farmer issues. Between 2014 and 2023, Rao, as the Chief Minister, poorly handled the issue of cultivation and procurement of paddy, crop loan waiver, free power, distribution of subsidised seeds, addressing farmer suicides, and the welfare of tenant farmers, among others. Contrary to Rao's claims, farmers argue that the Congress government has been performing relatively well on the agricultural front, despite facing challenges caused by financial constraints, a legacy of the BRS government, and drought-like conditions over which no one has control. They pointed to initiatives undertaken by the current administration to support farmers, including efforts to mitigate the impact of water scarcity and enhance agricultural productivity. Raos belated protests on farmer issues are being seen as a political ploy to resuscitate the BRS after the drubbing it received last year and the series of setbacks that have followed since, both in terms of leaders deserting it and the Congress government bringing to the fore issues like phone tapping and damage to the Kaleshwaram scheme and the corruption involved in building it. There are eight key issues which farmers brought up. Paddy procurement KTR, Harish Rao stayed away from protests called by KCR Rao called for protests on May 16 to protest against the delay in paddy procurement for the rabi season. It did not evoke much response from farmers probably because they were busy at the procurement centres set up by the Congress government way earlier than the BRS had done. Top BRS leaders including K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish stayed away, showing the call for protest for what it was an attempt to politicise a key issue. There have been instances when the BRS government was procuring Rabi foodgrains even at the end of June while the Congress has completed a major portion of purchases by mid-May. The BRS government opened 7,031 paddy procurement centres (PPCs) last year, the Congress government has increased it to 7,149. The BRS government opened 2,000 centres by May last, but this year the Congress government had opened 7,000. Moreover, there used to be large-scale complaints of traders fleecing farmers in the name of 'tarugu' under the BRS regime. If a farmer sold 100 quintals of paddy, traders would pay for 80 quintals and keep the rest for tarugu (wastage). Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has ordered a crackdown on this practice, and there has been no complaint of farmers being fleeced. Last season, farmers faced a shortage of labour and paddy cleaners, gunny bags, tarpaulin covers to protect the harvest from untimely rains and tents for protection from heat. Paddy in huge quantities used to get damaged due to untimely rains in April-May. That has largely not been the case now, despite the intense summer heat and sudden unseasonal rains. The tardiness in procuring paddy worked against the farmers. Millers under the BRS regime in collusion with officials used to move in early, and offer to buy paddy quickly. Farmers, afraid of the safety of their harvest, used to fall for the ploy and were forced to accept lower rates than the stipulated minimum support price. This year, quick opening of purchase centres has stymied the practice. Indeed, farmers in several districts have sold the paddy at Rs 2,350 to Rs 2,900, higher than the Rs 2,200 per quintal MSP. In Raos hands, paddy procurement became a political weapon to target the BJP after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In April 2022, Rao staged a dharna in Delhi and gave the Narendra Modi government 24 hours to draft a new paddy procurement policy in an attempt to project the BJP as 'anti-farmer.' He also demanded that the Centre procure all the food grains grown in Telangana state. Now, Rao has asked the Revanth Reddy government to purchase the paddy, something the BRS regime did not do. Immediately after becoming the Chief Minister in 2014, Rao promised to irrigate one crore acres to make paddy cultivation easier and promised to procure every grain from the farmers. In 2021, he did a U-turn and asked farmers not to go for paddy, blaming it on the Centres policies. Vari veste ure (if you sow paddy, you are finished), he said, comparing paddy to a noose around the farmers neck. Crop loan waiver 13 lakh farmers never got loans waived under BRS regime The BRS came to power twice by promising to waive crop loans up to Rs 1 lakh but it badly failed the farmers. Its failure to implement the measure led to banks declaring lakhs of farmers as defaulters and freezing their accounts. Farmers ended up paying huge amounts as interest; the amount they received towards crop loan waiver was less than the interest they incurred due to the delayed release of funds to banks by the BRS regime. In the first term, the BRS government took five years to waive Rs 16,144 crore loans of 35 lakh farmers. It paid banks in four instalments over five years. In the second term, the farmers had it even worse. A total of 40.66 lakh farmers were supposed to get Rs 25,916 crore loans waived in total. The BRS government cut down the number of beneficiaries by restricting the waiver to one family member. With this, the bankers calculated that Rs 20,141 crore needed to be waived in respect of 36.68 lakh farmers. With a smaller target, the KCR government paid back loans of up to Rs 30,000 each of 6 lakh farmers in the first three years till 2022. On feeling the heat from farmers, Rao announced just before Assembly polls in August 2023 that Rs 7,753 crore will be released to clear loans of the remaining 17 lakh farmers. Even so, by the time it lost power, the BRS government had cleared the loans of 23 lakh farmers, leaving 13 lakh farmers left in the lurch. With this 10-year record, Rao is now accusing the five-month-old Congress government of not implementing its poll promise to waive crop loans up to Rs 2 lakh, though Revanth Reddy has made it clear that it would be completed by August 15. Farmers' suicides BRS stopped enumerating farmer deaths after bringing in Rythu Bhima Under the BRS, Telangana state stood at the fourth place in the country with 352 farmer suicides after Maharashtra (2,448), Karnataka (985) and Andhra Pradesh (309) in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. The victims included five women farmers; all these farmers cultivated their own land. The BRS regime covered up the figures after the launch of the Rythu Bhima life insurance scheme on August 15, 2018, quickly compensating the bereaved families. From 908 in 2018, the number of farmer suicides, according to government records, fell to 499 in 2019 after the launch of the scheme and further to 179 last year. However, activists of Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV), which has fought cases on behalf of tenant farmers who are denied compensation, pegged the number of suicides of farmers in 2023 at 420. This data include figures accessed from the District Crime Records Bureau and media reports, which specifically attributed the suicides to farm distress. The BRS government had abandoned the process of enumerating farmer deaths and verification to settle family debts mandated under GO 194, after bringing in Rythu Bhima. The GO 194 process involved a probe by a three-member committee of police, revenue and agriculture departments after which Rs 6 lakh was given to the families of the deceased. This was done to ensure that debts standing in the name of farmers are settled. This process helped families to move ahead in life without being bogged down by piled-up debt, said B. Kondal Reddy, RSV activist. But the BRS regime abandoned this procedure too, pushing families of deceased farmers into a debt trap. Scrapping of crop insurance Rao left farmers uninsured, did not pay for crop damage The Rao regime left the farmers unprotected after it opted out of the Centres Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) crop insurance scheme he called it useless and never brought in a replacement. With this, farmers did not get insurance coverage for crop losses due floods, heavy rains, hailstorms every year. On the other hand, Rao showed them the moon in the mirror, promising aid but never delivering. It was not that the farmers were against the scheme. When the PMFBY was in force in 2015-16, about 10 lakh farmers insured their crops and about 7.73 lakh farmers got compensation of Rs 441.79 crore for rain damage. In 2016-17, about 8.87 lakh farmers insured their crops on 7.33 lakh acres and nearly 1.34 lakh farmers claimed Rs 111.33 crore in compensation for crop loss. In 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21, the insurance companies approved claims of Rs 960 crore, but the disbursal was delayed as the state government failed to pay its share of the premium. Then the government pulled out. Desperate farmers were forced to move the High Court to get the Rao government to release compensation from 2018-2020. In July 2022, crops were damaged across 12 lakh acres, and in March 2023, on five lakh acres due to heavy rains. The government, in a first, announced compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre in March but only for 2.3 lakh acres, hardly a tenth of the area. This amount is yet to reach all the affected farmers. The Rao government was the only one that left the farmers without a cover. The government became dependent on the Centre for funds to extend input subsidies to farmers under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). The Revanth Reddy government, however, has rejoined the PMFBY to extend insurance cover to crops. Discrimination against tenant farmers Rao cut landless farmers adrift, now speaks against assistance The Rao government stoutly refused to support the 18 lakh tenant farmers, those who take agricultural fields on hire for farming. They cultivate around 20 per cent of agricultural land but the Rao regime denied tenant farmers Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, crop loan waiver, insurance, compensation for crop loss and all other benefits. Rao repeatedly announced in the Assembly, at public meetings and election rallies that the government would extend benefits only to land-owning farmers never mind if they didnt till the land, had converted it to real estate ventures or if it was uncultivable land including hillocks. In contrast, tenant farmers, one out of every three agriculturalists in the state, never got any benefits though they borrow money and actually till the land and grow crops. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy promised to cover the tenant farmers under Rythu Bharosa, the new Rythu Bandhu after weeding out wasteful expenditure. The BRS responded on two fronts: One, that the Congress government would seize land and give it to tenant farmers and, two, demanding Revanth Reddys resignation for not implementing Rythu Bharosa even though the deadline is far away. Scrapping of all agri subsidy schemes Rao govt gave Rs 10,000, took away Rs 30,000 aid to farmers Before the BRS came to power, all state governments used to provide farmers with subsidised seeds, subsidies for farm mechanisation, among others. The BRS government stopped all this, and only paid Rs 10,000 per acre per year as Rythu Bandhu to landed farmers. Small farmers used to benefit up to 40,000 per year during the previous Congress government tenure between 2004 and 2014, with seed subsidy, crop loss compensation, market support price, and crop insurance. The BRS governments Rythu Bandhu actually resulted in a loss of Rs 30,000 per year for landed farmers and more for those who do agriculture on rented farms. Crop damage? Use Rythu Bandhu Rao govt stopped enumerating crop damage to avoid paying farmers The BRS government stopped enumeration of crop loss due to natural calamities on the ground that it was extending Rs 10,000 per acre as Rythu Bandhu per year. Rao ordered enumeration of the crop loss only when Assembly polls neared, and announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre. Even this was not delivered completely to all farmers who suffered losses; the Rao government used the Assembly election code as a ploy to stop payments. Rao used to promise that the rest of the farmers would receive the compensation after elections. The BRS lost power. It is now up to the Revanth Reddy government to examine their claims and add to the financial burden. While the wounds of the farmers were still fresh, Rao, after losing power, went to the farmers affected by unseasonal rain and drought-like conditions, posed for pictures with the damaged crop and accused the Revanth Reddy government of not standing by the agriculturists. 24-hour free power to farmers Rao govt gave power for 13 hours, hid data from substations Rao announced in January 2018 that the BRS government was extending 24-hour free power to the agriculture sector. In reality, power was not supplied for more than 13 hours anywhere in the state, and even that was done in phases. The log books on the power actually supplied, that is available with sub-stations, clearly proved that 24-hour power supply was a bogus claim made by the Rao regime. When Congress leaders visited substations and exposed this, Rao ordered seizure of log books in July 2023 and shifted the records to the power utilities head office in Hyderabad to prevent anyone from inspecting them. Rao is now accusing the Congress government of not giving 24-hour free power to farmers and calling for protests across the country.

Phase 5| LS Polls: 49 seats in fray; fate of Rahul Gandhi, BJP ministers and other prominent netas to be decided

Six states and two UTs vote in fifth phase Bihar: 5 seats Jammu and Kashmir: 1 seat Jharkhand: 3 seats Ladakh: 1 seat Maharashtra: 13 seats Odisha: 5 seats Uttar Pradesh: 14 seats West Bengal: 7 seats The fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections takes place today, with 49 constituencies from six states and two union territories voting, including India's financial capital Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow. Over 8.95 crore people, including 4.26 crore females and 5,409 third-gender electors, are eligible to vote in this round and 9.47 lakh polling officials have been deployed across 94,732 polling stations. Prominent candidates on the ballot include former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BJP ministers Smriti Irani, Rajnath Singh, and Piyush Goyal, Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Omar Abdullah, RJD chief Lalu Prasads daughter Rohini Acharya and Ram Vilas Paswans son Chirag Paswan. Five years ago, the Congress managed to win only one seat in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli, while the BJP secured a dominant 32 seats. The undivided Shiv Sena, then allied with the BJP, took seven seats. Bihar's NDA partners Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and Janata Dal (United) each won one seat. Additionally, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) captured four seats, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) claimed two and the JKNC won one seat. Meanwhile, elections will also take place for 35 assembly constituencies in Odisha, with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik among the candidates on the ballot. Patnaik is contesting from two assembly segments: Hinjili under the Aska Lok Sabha seat in Ganjam district and Kantabanji under the Bolangir parliamentary constituency. The first four phases were held for a combined 380 seats, with voting concluding for all seats in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Karnataka, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Telangana, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sikkim, and Tripura. Similarly, polling has also finished in the union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. The fifth and sixth phases of the general elections will be held on May 25 and June 1, respectively. The fate of the 18th Lok Sabha will be determined on June 4. Fate of five Modi ministers at stake in 14 UP seats The political heartland of India will seal the fate of five Union ministers today. The 14 seats comprise not only Congress citadelsRae Bareli and Amethibut also Ayodhya, the nerve centre of the BJP's Hindutva plank. In fact, this phase will decide the tone and tenor of the sixth and seventh rounds, which will be concentrated across 27 seats in Purvanchal. Moreover, four constituencies in Bundelkhand will decide whether to let the BJP achieve a hat-trick or vote for change. UP's Faizabad constituency, comprising Ayodhya, could be easily mistaken for the nerve centre of temple politics but if past Lok Sabha elections are anything to go by, the poll outcome in this temple town has mostly been tied to the caste factor. And the 2024 LS poll is no different. LS polls: Caste looms over temple in Ayodhya Lok Sabha polls: Lord Ram on my side, says Samajwadi Party candidate in Ayodhya fight Amethi: A tryst with destiny that wasnt to be Amethi was waiting for Rahul Gandhi. When he decided to make Rae Bareli his second arena, as part of his much-awaited return to north India, it undoubtedly became a bit of a letdown for his supporters. A proxy war has been raging since, with Smriti Irani left stranded in a lonely fight for weeks before the Congress made up its mind. If insiders are to be believed, INDIA bloc leaders strongly advised the GOP not to let any part of the election become a clash of big names. Avoid Smriti vs Rahul contest, it was said. For that would have hogged the headlines, overshadowing all else. It was to be made localor rather, issue-based. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ON THE PULSE IN AMETHI Battleground Bihar: Can Lalu's daughter carry his legacy? The five seats going to polls in Bihar will witness new candidates in four seats and a turncoat trying his luck in the remaining one. In the high-profile seat of Saran, Rohini Acharya is pitted against BJP MP and former Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Acharya, who hit the headlines for donating one of her kidneys to her father, RJD chief and former chief minister Lalu Prasad, is making her debut in electoral politics. Saran is considered the home ground of Lalu Prasad, who had represented the seat four times before being disqualified after his conviction in cases linked to a multi-crore fodder scam in 2013. Lalus bid to return the gift to daughter in Saran Vaishali: Bahubalis hold sway in cradle of democracy Battleground Bihar: As his fathers shadow looms, Chirag faces daunting task in Hajipur Chirag Paswan of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is riding high on the Modi factor and his late father Ram Vilas Paswans legacy from the Hajipur (SC) constituency. Chirag chose Hajipur this time, believing it to be the karmabhoomi of his father and had to fight hard to overtake his uncle, Pashupati Paras, the current MP from the constituency, in the NDA. The junior Paswan is pitted against Shiv Chandra Ram of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Shiv Chandra, twice MLA from Rajapakar and former state minister, unsuccessfully contested the election in 2019 but lost to Pashupati Kumar Paras largely due to the Modi wave. Shiv Chandra is considered to be close to Lalu Prasad. Would Hajipur shower its blessing on Modis Hanuman? Clash of surprise picks in Mumbai North Central Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency, home to several celebrities and spread across many posh areas including Bandra and Vile Parle, is witnessing a close contest between renowned lawyer Ujjwal Nikam of the BJP and Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad. Interestingly, neither Nikam nor Gaikwad was the first choice of their respective parties. Nikam was picked at the last moment by the BJP. As for Gaikwad, it was Congress' alliance partner, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), that proposed her name. Development is main issue, PM not doing 'Hindu-Muslim' politics but telling truth about oppn parties: Dhami

Development is main issue, PM not doing 'Hindu-Muslim' politics but telling truth about oppn parties: Dhami Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has asserted that development is the biggest issue for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in this Lok Sabha election. He dismissed the opposition's charge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was doing Hindu-Muslim politics during campaigning, saying that the prime minister was only telling the country the truth about the opposition parties after they raised issues like personal law and reservations for Muslims. In an interview to PTI-Bhasha, Dhami said the people of the country have seen the work done by the prime minister and he has no doubt that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will win 400 seats. Asked why the BJP was resorting to raising ''Hindu-Muslim'' issues if it is confident of winning on the basis of the work done by its government, Dhami said, Our main issue is development, but at the same time, it is the responsibility of the party to tell the truth to the people about the opposition parties. ''When the Congress manifesto was released and the statements of Congress leaders came... the statements from INDI alliance people came... then it became necessary to tell the country about it.'' The chief minister said when the BJPs manifesto is released, it has a pledge to bring a Uniform Civil Code in the country, while the Congress' manifesto mentions personal law. ''It does not seem like a Congress manifesto. Its clear that it has been brought for appeasement. Not going to the Ram temple consecration ceremony, abusing Sanatan, Lalu ji (RJD chief Lalu Prasad) speaking on reservation for Muslims, in Karnataka you have brought a particular community under OBC. This has been done before in the undivided Andhra. so it becomes necessary to tell this truth to the people of the country. ''And when the prime minister started doing it, these people think the development is not the issue,'' the chief minister said. Dhami, who has been campaigning in various areas of Delhi for the last few days, claimed that BJP will win all seats in Uttarakhand as well as in the national capital. ''We are winning all five seats in Uttarakhand. I see that Delhis heart is also with Modiji. Will win all seven seats here,'' he said Targeting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Dami alleged that he has left the Congress far behind in corruption. On the alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal, he said, ''Even today he (Kejriwal) has done drama. Giving protection to criminals ... means you are involved in crime somewhere. A woman MP from your party has levelled allegations. To treat her like this... shows that your mentality is anti-women.'' He said that the people of Delhi are watching all this and will give a befitting reply to Kejriwal in the elections. The chief minister also spoke on the recent cases of forest fire in Uttarakhand and the alleged mismanagement in the Chardham Yatra. He said that these developments were projected in a certain way by a section of the media, whereas the actual situation was something else. Joshimath is sinking, it was also publicised in the same way. I have gone on the Yatra myself. I am reviewing continuously. The Yatra is going on systematically and smoothly. It is true that some pilgrims had come without registration, because of which there was trouble in the initial days, he said.

Modi criticises Mamata for remarks against Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha

Modi criticises Mamata for remarks against Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condemned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks against a few monks of Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha, alleging that she is ''under pressure from Muslim extremists'' and accused her of threatening these socio-religious organisations to ''appease'' the TMC's vote bank. Addressing back-to-back rallies in Purulia, Bishnupur, and Medinipur, Modi said the TMC has crossed all limits and appealed to voters to teach the party a lesson through their votes so that it does not dare to insult socio-religious organisations in future. ''The TMC, which has intimidated and threatened people of Bengal during elections, has crossed all limits this time. ISKCON, Ramakrishna Mission created by Swami Vivekananda, and Bharat Sevashram Sangha are known for service and morality, but the CM is openly threatening them,'' he said. Modi emphasised that these organisations have millions of followers and their sole aim is to serve people. ''The TMC has pointed fingers at them. Such is their audacity! Just to please their vote bank?'' he questioned. Addressing another rally at Bishnupur, the PM accused Banerjee of being under pressure from Muslim fundamentalists to attack saints and monks. ''The TMC is jittery because the party sees its time is over. In desperation, TMC leaders have started hurling abuses at prestigious organizations like ISKCON, Ramakrishna Mission, and Bharat Sevashram Sangha. The CM under pressure from Muslim extremists has publicly insulted our faith, monks and saints to appease her vote bank,'' he said. Addressing an election rally in Goghat under Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday, Banerjee had claimed, ''Some monks of Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha are working under the influence of BJP leaders in Delhi.'' Criticising her remarks, Modi said, ''The TMC does not care about the sentiments of people of Bengal. The country will not tolerate the insult of such institutions and revered figures like Swami Vivekananda. The government, which does not have any respect for such religious organisations, has to be taught a lesson through your votes so that it does not dare to insult such organisations in future.'' The PM criticised the ''corrupt INDIA bloc, including the TMC,'' saying, ''Modi guarantees that none of the corrupt people will be spared.'' ''After the new government is formed on June 4, corrupt people will spend their lives in jail. Action against them will intensify after the poll results,'' he added. Modi alleged that the TMC and Congress are two sides of the same coin when it comes to corruption. He asserted that the TMC, Congress, and the Left might be three different parties, but their sins are the same and ''that is why they formed the INDIA bloc.'' ''These parties have only given empty promises to the poor, women, and SC and ST communities. Wherever they formed governments, they destroyed the states. Bengal is a prime example of that,'' he said. Modi accused the INDIA bloc parties of operating on a ''model of misrule, corruption, appeasement, and dynastic politics.'' The PM criticised the TMC's vote-bank politics, saying the party ''refrained from taking action against culprits in Sandeshkhali and is now pointing fingers at women who suffered atrocities.'' ''The incident of Sandeshkhali has shaken the women of Bengal. The TMC has dehumanised women of SC and ST communities to protect Shahjahan Sheikh. The leaders of TMC are pointing fingers at the women who suffered atrocities,'' he said. ''TMC gives the slogan of 'Maa, Mati, Manush' yet does nothing to protect them. The women of Bengal have lost faith in TMC,'' he said. Modi's remarks come amid multiple purported videos of Sandeshkhali women circulating in the public domain, claiming that a local saffron party leader made those women sign blank papers which were later filled up as complaints of sexual assault. However, the Prime Minister did not directly refer to those videos. PTI could not independently verify the authenticity of those videos, which have kept the state's political situation volatile in recent days. Modi slammed the INDIA bloc over the issue of reservation and said that they want to give quotas based on religion. ''Babasaheb Ambedkar was against providing reservations based on religion. But now, the INDIA alliance wants to give reservations based on religion. In Karnataka, they gave OBC reservations to Muslims, and TMC supported Congress in this conspiracy. Do you want to put an end to your reservations? You are not the vote bank for TMC and Congress, so these parties don't care about you,'' he said. Hitting out at the corruption of the TMC, Modi said, ''Everything of the corrupt TMC leaders will be sold.'' ''The TMC has not even spared your children in its hunger for money. In the land where Saraswati Puja takes place, the 'teacher recruitment scam' also takes place. It has put the future of not only the youth but also the coming generations at stake,'' he said at the rally. Modi subtly criticised Banerjee by stating that he ''does not have to do anything for his nephews,'' in an apparent reference to Banerjee's nephew, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. ''Neither do I have to do anything for any of my nephews nor do I have to leave anything for any brother. I have to leave a developed India as a legacy for the children of the poor, Dalit, and tribals, so I have come to seek your blessings for the third time,'' he said.

'All were praying, many started crying too': Passenger recounts Air India Express engine fire horror

BENGALURU: Dr Jeffy Cherry was one of the 179 passengers on the Air India Express flight from Bengaluru to Kochi, which caught fire mid-air and returned to Kempegowda International Airport. The dentist from Thrissur commended the evacuation team for their excellent job in ensuring the safety of all on board. He recounted the terrifying experience of seeing sparks near the wing of the flight in the darkness. Dr Cherry and his mother C M Shantha had come to Bengaluru on Saturday morning by an Indigo flight to attend the funeral of a relative. They were returning to home by IX 1132 from Terminal 2 when the drama occurred. He told TNIE, The flight was supposed to depart at 9 pm on Saturday but it had not yet returned from another trip. The airline had intimated us earlier in the day that the flight would be delayed by an hour. The boarding finally took place at 10.30 pm. A little later, the flight took off. The incident unfolded a little after we were in the air, he recalled. Most of the flyers were from Kerala. I was seated in the middle in the left side of the aircraft. I could hear a thud sound coming from the right side of the flight. The sound kept increasing gradually. Suddenly, a little girl said aloud that she could see fire from the wing of the aircraft. Then many started moving towards the right end and we all could see the fire. One of us alerted a male cabin crew member who took a look and immediately went inside the cockpit to alert the pilot. The crew advised all of us to go to our seats and remain seated. At this time, the pilot announced that they were going back to have an emergency landing at Bengaluru. There was shock and almost everyone was frightened after they heard this. The cabin crew was handling the situation remarkably well, he added. Almost all passengers were praying and many started crying too. There was a lot of fear and the flame could be seen very clearly too since it was dark, he added. After the flight landed at Bengaluru safely, the emergency exits were opened and passengers were advised on how to go about it. Though we were asked to come in a queue, many passengers started pushing ahead and rushing. Many were trying to take their luggage along and were trying to take it from above but were directed to leave them behind and rush, the dentist said. The evacuation slide (also called as emergency escape slides are inflatable slides made of strong fibres) was deployed on both ends to facilitate passengers slide down comfortably) opened near the exit doors. Many rushed down. The elderly were a bit worried but they were convinced and reassured by the crew to slide down and men were waiting below to help them. Then, we were all immediately made to board a shuttle bus and taken to the terminal, he said. However, the dentist said he was completely unimpressed by what happened there. Though food and drinks were provided, the right support at the airport was lacking, he added. Many had left their handbags on the flight and desperately wanted them. The elderly had medicines in it. We were told the bags would reach Kochi but flyers engaged in much argument and demanded their bags be handed over. Air India Express staff told us that flyers could leave by a flight at 2 am on Sunday but most refused to travel without baggage. Finally, both our hand baggage and check-in baggage were handed over to all by 2.30 am. We were then told that we could leave by the 5 am flight but the timing was repeatedly changed. Finally, by 10 am on Sunday, a flight was arranged in which 122 passengers could travel. We had major arguments and refused to travel until all the 179 flyers could be accommodated. We left only after it was clear that arrangements for the rest would be made by subsequent flights. The flight took off by 11.30 am finally. The doctor and his mother reached Kochi safely by late afternoon

Karnataka moves SC challenging quashing of case against JD(S) leader for damaging EVMs

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court issued notice and asked JD(S) leader BB Patil, also a former police officer, to reply to an appeal filed by the Karnataka government challenging the quashing of a criminal complaint against him for damaging Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) as part of a mob last year during the Karnataka assembly elections. A two-judge bench of the top court, led by Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma issued notice to Patil and sought his response in the Karnataka government appeal. The apex court would now hear the case after summer vacations (July 7). It is to be noted that Patil, a retired police officer belonging to JD(S) party, is accused of allegedly damaging EVMs as part of a mob last year during the Karnataka assembly elections. Initially, in July 2023, Karnataka High Court's Kalaburagi Bench, in its order had quashed the criminal case and complaint against Patil and granted him relief in the case. But Karnataka govt had subsequently moved the apex court and filed an appeal before it seeking reversal of the HC order. Karnataka government in its appeal, said that the complaint was wrongly quashed by the HC. Without appreciating that there are overwhelming material (documents or evidences) against him (Patil) which was placed on record in the form of video recordings and photographs showing him to be part of the mob that attacked and abused the government officials on election duty and damaged the EVM machines, Karnataka govt said in its appeal filed before the top court. The Karnataka govt strongly made it clear to thr apex court that the accused had played an active role and led the mob that attacked poll officials, causing damage to vehicles and destroyed election materials including EVMs last year during the assembly polls.
