How a diamond influencer from Chennai is educating customers
For decades, the Indian diamond industry has operated behind closed doors, confining technical knowledge to traders and manufacturers. While Gen X and Boomers focused largely on carats, costs, and dhoshams , Millennials and Gen Z are raising questions about sourcing, value, and ethics. Their curiosity is fed by the Internet. Despite this questioning, only a few sellers make an effort to explain to the customers what they are purchasing. Recognising this gap, a third-generation diamond manufacturer from Chennai decided to educate. Do diamonds turn black? is a simple question answered on Instagram reels by Viikram Vijay Subbaiah. This reel has drawn over 94,000 views, revealing peoples interest in learning about the jewellery they wear. At first glance, Viikram, the chief diamonds officer at Vee Star Diamonds, fits the bill of a generational entrepreneur. But one conversation with him makes it clear: he is in it to change peoples perception of how diamonds are worn. Though his roots trace back to Karaikudi, a place that holds a long-standing reputation for quality and trust in the diamond trade, he grew up in Chennai and planned to complete an MBA and settle abroad. But his life took a wild turn when his short work trip to Surat the diamond capital of India turned into a year-long stay. The kind of trust, how they work, and the people there inspired me to get into the business. I learnt the nuances from scratch, got my hands dirty in manufacturing, returned to Chennai, and told my father that we will try to make the business bigger, he says. Glitter talks Today, he is consistently educating the public through social media. This journey began casually, thanks to a friend in digital marketing. We hit 600-700k organically within a month. Thats when I understood that people were curious. They just needed the right information, he says. His reels cover versatile topics: myths and mystique, open and closed settings in jewellery designs, diamond mines, diamond types, and certifications, among others. Viikram Vijay Subbaiah Our clients bombard us with a lot of questions. So, thats where I source my content from. Lets say a client walks in today, and asks me ten questions, out of which two or three are new. I choose them and produce content about it. In one of his reels, Viikram explains the concept of blood diamonds. Blood diamonds do not exist in the market anymore. It has been non-existent for the past 10 to 15 years, at least. All the governments across the world have collectively agreed upon a process called the Kimberly Certification which is required for every single diamond that is exported, he says. It certifies that the diamonds have been mined by the rightful process and no labour was exploited, he adds. Blood diamonds have also been the reason for consumers to be more inclined towards lab-grown diamonds rather than natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are mass-manufactured, and it is mostly done by first-generation manufacturers. I accept that it is an amazing product, but I think natural diamonds always have a story to tell as they were formed at least a billion years ago, and it is a flex, he says. Everyones best friend Viikram believes jewellery has become an everyday wear for youngsters with the spread of hip-hop culture in India, especially through popularisation by celebrities like Hardik Pandya. Unlike the previous generation, Gen Z doesnt want to keep their jewels in lockers. They want to wear it every day, hence, they prefer lightweight jewels, which are easily available in diamond. Wearing diamonds makes them feel confident. It acts as a conversation starter, he says, adding jewellery is no longer gender-specific; to be precise, it is not even human-specific. He shares that some of his clients have approached him to make pendents for their pets. With the growing digital influence and changing consumer habits, diamonds are becoming less of a locked-away luxury and more of an everyday identity. The educational content by Viikram is, however, not limited to his social media; it extends to their website. With a Learn & Explore section, they break down jargon and explain the process in simple terms. This philosophy is straight out of his fathers experiences and legacy, he says, adding that his father used to urge him to explain the product to the consumer rather than trying to sell them the product. Besides educating the consumers, Viikram works closely with his parents, the founders of the business. With a streamlined manufacturing process importing roughs from Canada, cutting and polishing them in Surat, designing and setting jewellery in Chennai the business fits the brief of both a wholesaler and a retailer, with three outlets across Tamil Nadu. They follow a mine-to-market process as his entire family is involved in the manufacturing process. And what is Viikrams role? Among the many things he does, he vows to see to it that the customers understand the final piece they purchase, through and through. ED returns properties worth Rs 611 crore to agri gold victims
HYDERABAD: The Enforcement Directorate Hyderabad Zonal Unit has accomplished the process of restitution of attached properties worth `611 crore (value of the properties at the time of attachment) to the victims of Ponzi schemes launched by Agri Gold group of companies. The present market value of the properties is expected to be more than Rs 1,000 crore. In May 2025, the ED filed restitution application under Section 8(8) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 before the Special PMLA Court of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Hyderabad for release of movable and immovable properties attached by it to the Crime Investigation Department, Andhra Pradesh. The ED filed the petition so that attached properties could be restored to the victims of the Agri Gold Ponzi schemes under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishments (APPDFE) Act, 1999. The Court vide, in its order dated 10.06.2025, allowed the restitution petition filed by ED. The attached assets for which restitution has been allowed by the court include 397 parcels of agricultural land, residential/commercial plots and apartments. Of the total 397 attached immovable properties, 380 are in the state of Andhra Pradesh, 13 in Telangana and 4 in Karnataka. The agency initiated investigation against M/s Agri Gold group of companies in 2018 on the basis of several FIRs registered in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Odisha and Andaman & Nicobar. Agri Gold group of companies had collected deposits from around 19 lakh customers and 32 lakh account holders in the name of real estate investment with a promise of high returns or a residential plot. The ED investigation revealed that Agri Gold group ran fraudulent Collective Investment Scheme in the guise of real estate business, for which more than 130 companies were floated. These companies used to collect deposits as advances for plots from depositors, without commensurate land being available with the company. By adhering to this business module, the accused lured lakhs of gullible persons and got deposits from them. These funds were thereafter diverted to various industries like power/energy, dairy, entertainment, health (ayurvedic), farm land ventures etc., without the knowledge of the depositors and the companies defaulted on returning the deposits either in cash or in kind as agreed upon. The agency stated that thousands of commission agents were engaged by the firm to lure people and they managed to collect around Rs 6,380 crore from more than 32 lakh investor accounts. During the course of PMLA investigation, movable and immovable properties spread across various states worth around Rs 4,141.2 crore were attached by ED. ED had also arrested Avva Venkata Rama Rao, Avva Venkata Seshu Narayana Rao and Avva Hema Sundara Vara Prasad in December 2020 and filed prosecution complaint before the Special PMLA Court, Nampally, Hyderabad against 14 accused persons and entities in February 2021. Cognizance of the offence of money laundering against all the accused was taken by the court on August 29, 2023. Subsequently, a supplementary prosecution complaint was filed on March 28, 2024 against 22 accused and cognizance of the same was taken by the court on November 4, 2024. In the instant case, ED had earlier restituted properties worth Rs 3,339 crore (present market value of more than Rs 6,000 crore) in February 2025. The total value of properties restituted in this case now stands at Rs 3,950 crore (present market value of more than 7,000 crore). This restitution exercise marks a significant step in EDs efforts to restore properties to their rightful claimants and to ensure that proceeds of crime are returned to those affected.

Indian-origin couple honoured in New Zealand for IT contributions, community impact
BENGALURU: For the first time, two Indian-origin professionals have been recognised by the New Zealand government for their contributions to the IT industry and the Indian community. The husband and wife duo, Sunit Prakash and Lalita Kasanji, both dual citizens of New Zealand and Australia, have been appointed Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit. This honour, similar to Indias national awards, is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the nation. Since 1995, only around 15 people have received the award for services to IT. Sunit and Lalita co-founded the New Zealand Centre for Digital Connections with India in 2023, with the aim of building stronger digital and tech ties between the two countries. Their research showed that Indian IT professionals contribute $350 million to New Zealands economy each year. They also developed support programmes to help this workforce grow and gain recognition. They found that while Indian IT professionals had deep knowledge, experience, and strong connections in both India and New Zealand, their value was often overlooked. Sunlight is a powerful disinfectant, and we are bringing a magnifying glass, Sunit Prakash, explaining their efforts to bring visibility to this group, said. The couple also created a well-connected and active professional community of Indian IT experts. Their efforts have now been recognised at the national level. Their work led to a formal recommendation that New Zealand send a Digital and IT Trade Delegation to India. This comes as New Zealand looks to strengthen its trade relationship with India, which is one of the fastest-growing economies and a major source of global tech talent. Sunit completed his MMS from NMIMS, Bombay University, in 1987 and has worked in Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand. Lalitas family has lived in Wellington since 1912, and she traces her roots to Surat.
Surat Horror: Teen raped, impregnated by online friend
AHMEDABAD: In a deeply distressing case from Gujarats Surat City, a minor girl (15 year old) from the Umarwada area was allegedly raped multiple times by a 25-year-old man she befriended through social media. The accused, came into contact with the girl online and slowly lured her into what he portrayed as a romantic relationship. According to police, the accused, befriended the minor through social media platforms. Their online interactions eventually led to the exchange of phone numbers and, later, personal meetings. Investigators say accused gained the girl's trust and convinced her he was in love with her. Under this false pretense, he met her several times in secluded areas near a creek within the Puna police station limits, where the alleged sexual assaults took place. The matter came to light only recently when the girl began suffering from abdominal pain and difficulty in breathing. Her mother initially took her to a local hospital, where the symptoms were treated, but not diagnosed. However, on June 3, after the symptoms persisted, she was taken to Another Hospital. There, doctors informed the family that the minor was four months pregnant, said police officials. This revelation shocked the family. When they gently questioned her, the girl revealed the details of her contact with accused and what had happened over the past few months. The family immediately filed a complaint with Puna police station. A case of rape and relevant charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered. The accused was arrested shortly afterward. Inspector from Puna police station confirmed, The accused formed a relationship with the victim under false emotional promises and repeatedly Raped her. He has been arrested, and further investigation is underway. The minor has been admitted to the ICU for medical monitoring. Her family has filed a petition in the Surat Sessions Court seeking permission to terminate the pregnancy.
LUCKNOW: In a major crackdown, the Lucknow police tracked a rape accused, Deepak Verma, 24, and neutralised him in an encounter near the Sugarcane Institute in the Devi Kheda area on the outskirts of the state capital early Friday morning. Deepak, who had allegedly raped a two-and-a-half-year-old girl under the Alambagh metro station just hours earlier, was gunned down after he opened fire on a police team that had zeroed in on him. He sustained two bullet injuries in the chest and later died during treatment. The heinous crime occurred in the early hours of Friday when the accused allegedly kidnapped the toddler, who was sleeping with her parents under the Alambagh metro station. Gagging her mouth, he lifted her and carried her towards the lift area around 2:30 am, where he raped her. After the girl fainted due to severe injuries, the accused, presuming her dead, fled the scene. A handicapped passerby later found the child lying unconscious and bleeding and alerted nearby residents and her parents. Soon after the incident, a 3.55-second CCTV footage from the metro premises surfaced. It showed Deepak arriving on a white Honda Activa, pressing the lift button, and then crossing the road to pick up the girl. He is seen lifting her and taking her towards the lift where the assault took place. Police said the footage suggested the accused had been monitoring the location and assessing the situation multiple times before striking. The victim was initially taken to Lokbandhu Hospital but was later referred to King Georges Medical University (KGMU) due to the severity of her injuries. Doctors said her private parts were badly damaged, and she remained in critical condition. She underwent plastic surgery at the KGMU trauma centre. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Ashish Srivastava, confirmed that Deepak Verma was identified through his scooters registration number captured on CCTV. His phone location was traced to the Sugarcane Institute on VIP Road, about 5 km from the crime scene. When police approached him on Friday morning, Deepak allegedly opened fire in an attempt to escape. In retaliation, police shot him, and he later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The incident sparked widespread outrage, as it took place in the heart of the city, close to three police posts, including a pink booth just 300 meters from the crime scene. The fact that the attack occurred in a supposedly secure area raised serious questions about police patrolling and public safety. Amid mounting public anger, the Lucknow Police formed five teams to track down the culprit. Within 24 hours, he was located and neutralised. According to police sources, Deepak Verma, a resident of Duda Colony in Aishbagh, was the youngest of four siblings. He sold water illegally on trains and occasionally participated in religious tableaux during Jagrans. He had previously been jailed in a similar case along with two accomplices. The scooter used in the crime had originally been gifted to Deepak Vermas elder brother by their sister in Surat. Deepak later took control of the vehicle and was known to roam the streets at night. Police sources said Verma had visited the Alambagh metro station area two to three times on the night of the assault. Once he was certain that the girls parents were asleep, he abducted her and raped her. Following the assault, Verma reportedly wandered through nearby localities on the scooter for over two-and-a-half hours, appearing unconcerned and showing no signs of remorse. Investigators also recovered several disturbing images from his phone, including photos of him dressed as an Aghori. Police believe this may indicate a troubling pattern in his personal behaviour and mental state.

AHMEDABAD: A nationwide scam involving the online sale of traders' GST data has come to light, with Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Noida identified as hotspots of a gang called Data Solution. The Surat Chartered Accountants Association, in a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, revealed that sensitive GST data is being sold in packagesGSTR-1 for Rs 8,000 Rs 10,000 and 2B, 3B, and e-Way Bill data bundled at Rs 15,000 for three months. The expos has triggered alarm over serious lapses in the GST system and sparked calls for urgent government action. A nationwide racket involving the sale of confidential GST data of traders has surfaced, with brokers operating from office-like setups in Delhi and Ghaziabad. Far from being a backdoor operation, these data dealers function like firms, offering bulk packages of sensitive tax information to clients across the country. Instead of single-use data, brokers are selling three- and six-month bundles, tailored to demand. Rates vary based on the depth of informationRs 5,000 for basic data, Rs 7,000 for more detailed sets, and up to Rs 25,000 for premium access, including e-way bills and HSN codes. The scam gained further traction after a WhatsApp chat between a broker and a trader leaked, revealing conversations around ormal domestic data and enhanced packages featuring e-way bill details. Alarmed by the scale, the Surat Chartered Accountants Association has written to the Finance Minister, demanding urgent action to plug glaring holes in the GST data protection framework. The GST data market is currently very active and illegal, said CAAS President Hardik Kakadia. Its like a black market where confidential information is sold like vegetables in a bazaar. GSTR-1 data alone is going for Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. This reveals exactly to whom a trader has sold their goods. He added that even more comprehensive packages including 2B, 3B and e-Way Bill data are being sold as three-month bundles for Rs 15,000. Its alarming. These data bundles offer a full business blueprint. Anyone can simply duplicate your operations and compete directly. Kakadia said the operation is allegedly being run by a gang named Data Solution, with networks stretching across Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida. We have the details of these packages and supporting evidence of the illegal data sales, he said. He warned that leaking such business information is like handing your playbook to your rivals before the match. This is not just a breach of privacy its a direct threat to fair competition. Were heading towards a situation where doing business wont be safe anymore. CAAS has raised the matter with the Gujarat government but believes the issue demands immediate Central Government intervention. GST was meant to be a 'Good and Simple Tax', but if these problems persist, the entire system may collapse like a house of cards, he cautioned. We dont want lip service. We want action, said the CAAS spokesperson. Our letter to the government clearly outlines the challenges traders face. Without urgent and serious steps, the credibility of the entire GST system is at stake. Sources within the Surat Chartered Accountants Association have revealed a disturbing trendbusinessmen are purchasing GST data of their competitors to gain an edge. Aspiring traders looking to set up shop in a city are allegedly approaching data brokers to access the financial footprints.

YouTube-trained thief behind Rs 60.83 lakh Diamond heist caught
AHMEDABAD: A meticulously planned diamond heist worth Rs 60.83 lakh sent shockwaves through Rajkots gem industry in April but after a 45-day cat-and-mouse chase, police have finally nabbed the mastermind behind the theft. In a case that reads like a modern crime thriller, the thief guided by tips from jail inmates and tricks learned on YouTube pulled off the audacious burglary using a magnetic drill machine sourced from Mumbai. The theft took place on the night of 10 April 2025, when the accused broke into a diamond factory on Rajkots Kotharia Ring Road. Gaining entry through a rear door, he cracked open the heavy-duty safe and disappeared without leaving behind any obvious trace. Chaos erupted the following morning as senior police officials rushed to the scene. Ten teams were formed, and over 100 CCTV cameras in and around the vicinity were scanned yet none captured the thief. Investigators believe he carefully avoided detection by walking along a central road divider to steer clear of surveillance cameras. With no digital or physical trail, the Crime Branch widened its net, reaching out to diamond traders across Saurashtra and South Gujarat. In parallel, officers began interrogating known criminals linked to diamond thefts. A breakthrough came when an inmate at Rajkot jail revealed that fellow prisoner Ajay Nayaka had previously enquired about committing a perfect heist without being caught on CCTV. Further investigation uncovered Nayakas unconventional methods. While in prison, he had received advice from fellow inmates and studied burglary techniques on YouTube. He was specifically told to use a magnetic drill machine a high-powered tool capable of piercing reinforced safes. Nayaka travelled to Mumbai to procure the device, returning to Rajkot to carry out the plan with surgical precision. A repeat offender with several previous cases, Nayaka was difficult to trace. He had no mobile phone, no family contact, and no fixed residence. However, surveillance on his known associates in Surat and Valsad eventually led investigators to Umerpada, where he was hiding. As police closed in, Nayaka made a desperate attempt to escape by leaping from a second-floor building, injuring his hand. He was arrested and brought back to Rajkot for questioning. During interrogation, he admitted to conducting multiple recces of the factory. He had even camped atop a neighbouring shed to study entry and exit points. After two failed attempts, he succeeded on his third try on 10 April. Post-heist, he lay low for over an hour, hiding in a pit near the scene. He then made his way on foot to City Road, travelled to Surat and Valsad in search of buyers, but failed to secure a favourable deal. Eventually, Nayaka returned to Rajkot, where he buried the stolen diamonds in a pit near an abandoned factory. On 29 May, police recovered diamonds and other valuables worth Rs 61.09 lakh based on his confession. Ajay Nayaka has now been charged under Sections 305(A), 331(4) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), marking the closure of one of Rajkots most calculated diamond thefts to date.
Gas gun spark causes runway fire at Surat airport; three flights, helicopter diverted
AHMEDABAD: A sudden blaze sparked by a gas gun used to deter bird strikes led to a grassfire near the runway at Surat International Airport on Thursday afternoon, briefly halting flight operations and causing panic among ground staff and passengers. Firefighting vehicles rushed to the scene moments after the alarm was raised, dousing the flames with water. The incident unfolded just as an aircraft was preparing for take-off, prompting a swift emergency response. The fire was quickly brought under control, allowing the runway to resume operations. Flight movement has since returned to normal. According to sources, the grassfire near the runway disrupted several scheduled flights and helicopter operations. A private airlines Surat-Delhi service was among the affected, facing delays due to limited runway access. A Hyderabad-Surat flight was also impacted as emergency protocols were activated. In addition, a helicopter en route to Surat was held back, and the Bangalore-Surat flight experienced temporary disruption amid the chaos. A sudden fire near the runway grounded the Surat-Delhi flight that was preparing for take-off, according to sources. As emergency crews responded, an incoming helicopter was forced to divert to the nearby Hazira helipad. Simultaneously, a private airlines flight was rerouted to Ahmedabad due to the runway shutdown. The disruption halted all take-offs and landings, affecting at least three subsequent flights. As of now, the airport authority has not issued an official statement on the incident. Airport Director Anand Sharma told local media that the fire broke out in a grassy area within the operational zone around 1:30 p.m., triggered by a spark from a gas gun used to prevent bird strikes. A spark from the gas gun caused the fire, Sharma said. Immediate action was taken to stop it from spreading to the runway, which had to be closed until 2:45 p.m. Airport fire engines swiftly brought the blaze under control, but not before it disrupted multiple flights. As the firefighting operation continued, the incoming Surat-Hyderabad flight was diverted to Ahmedabad due to safety concerns. Shortly after, the Bangalore-Surat flight was also rerouted, this time to Vadodara.

Gujarat: BJP MP wants names of places such as 'Turkeywad' and 'Pakistan' removed from Surat map
AHMEDABAD: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, backlash is now spilling over to TurkeyIslamabads vocal allyfueling nationalist pushback on home soil. In Gujarats Surat city, local fury has turned toward neighborhoods long bearing names like 'Turkeywad,' 'Pakistan,' and 'Bangladesh.' Riding this wave of sentiment, the Surat BJP MP has formally urged the Municipal Commissioner to erase these names, pressing the Surat Municipal Corporation to strip any symbolic trace of nations now under public ire. In a letter, Lok Sabha MP Mukesh Dalal stated, Generally, there is some history behind the naming of streets, neighborhoods, main roads or settlements in cities. These names often reflect the historical, geographical, or cultural identity of the area. They are typically named after great personalities of the nation, state, or citysocio-political leaders or national martyrswith the intent that future generations should recognize and remember them for their contributions. Expressing concern over certain place names in Surat, he added, It is sad and surprising that many areas of Surat city are known by names associated with countries that are considered enemies of India. Why should we allow names that reflect nations which promote and support terrorism against India, encourage fanatical communalism, create instability, and pose a threat to the unity and integrity of our country? In his letter, Lok Sabha MP Mukesh Dalal wrote, Today, many areas in the city are known by the names of enemy countries like Turkeywad, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. This is an insult to the brave soldiers of our country and to the people of Surat. Name board announcing Turkeywad in Surat. Referring to recent events, he added, On one hand, after the cowardly act committed by terrorists loyal to Pakistan in Pahalgam, the brave soldiers of our nationunder the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modiare showing immense courage by eliminating terrorists and destroying their bases. On the other hand, allowing such names in Surat city is completely unacceptable. Dalal demanded immediate action, stating, A list should be prepared of all areas in the city that bear names of enemy countries like Turkeywad, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. These names must be removed and replaced with appropriate nationalist names that reflect the sentiments and aspirations of the people. BJP MP Mukesh Dalal, who grabbed headlines during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, made political history even before a single vote was cast. On April 22, 2024, Dalal was declared elected unopposed from Surat after seven candidates withdrew and the Congress nominee's affidavit was rejectedclearing the field entirely. This dramatic turn of events made Dalal the first MP to enter the 18th Lok Sabha without a contest, marking a rare and headline-grabbing political sweep.

Woman drugged and gang raped in Surat; BJP member arrested
AHMEDABAD: A chilling gang rape case has shocked Gujarats Surat city, with BJP Surat City ward general secretary Aditya Upadhyay at the centre of the storm. Upadhyay allegedly spiked a 23-year-old womans drink before driving her, half-conscious, to a hotel where his associate, Gaurav Singh, was already waiting. What followed was a brutal assault, as the duo took turns raping the victim. Upon regaining consciousness, the survivor immediately contacted the police and lodged a formal complaint. Swift action followed: a case was filed, and both accused were arrested. As outrage mounted, the Bharatiya Janata Party scrambled to contain the fallout, suspending Upadhyay from his post without delay. Speaking to the media, DCP of Surat Zone-5, Rakesh Barot, said, A complaint was registered yesterday at Jahangir Pura police station in which a rape case was filed against two accused. Based on the complaint, we have now registered it as a gang rape case. Suspension letter Barot further added, The complainant stated that she was taken to a beach and offered a cold drink, after which she became intoxicated. The two accused then took her to a hotel and raped her. According to Barot, the accused, identified as Aditya and Gaurav, have been arrested. Further investigation is underway, he said. According to sources, a routine market visit turned into a nightmare for a young woman in her early 20s in Surat, when she encountered Aditya Upadhyay, an acquaintance and the then-General Secretary of BJPs Surat City Ward No. 8. Posing as a friendly face, Upadhyay coaxed her into his car under the pretext of a casual conversation. Once inside, he offered her a caffeinated drink, laced with sedatives, leaving her semi-conscious within minutes. Seizing the opportunity, he drove her to a hotel, where his associate, Gaurav Singh, was already waiting. Behind closed doors, the two men allegedly took turns raping the incapacitated woman in a chilling display of premeditated brutality. The horror did not end there. The accused dumped the survivor near her house after the assault, attempting to erase their tracks. But as soon as the woman regained consciousness, she approached the police and exposed the crime in full detail, triggering an immediate crackdown. Surat Police wasted no time: both Upadhyay and Gaurav were arrested and charged. Investigators launched a thorough probe, examining hotel CCTV footage, car records, call data, and the survivors statement to strengthen the case. What makes this incident even more incendiary is the political connection. The primary accused, Aditya Upadhyay, held a post in the ruling BJPs local unit, a fact that sparked a wave of outrage. In swift damage control, BJP Surat city president Paresh Patel suspended Upadhyay from the party. With remand proceedings underway, police say more damning revelations may soon surface as the investigation intensifies.

Gujarat: Female tutor abducts minor boy, becomes pregnant; gets court nod for abortion
AHMEDABAD: Following the arrest of a 23-year-old female tutor for allegedly abducting her 13-year-old male student and fleeing across state lines, it was revealed that she is 20 weeks pregnant. While DNA testing is underway to determine paternity, she has requested an abortion. The case, which has gripped Surat, Gujarat, began when the boy was reported missing from a residential area in Pune. The pair was located and detained at the Rajasthan border five days later. As the investigation progressed, she admitted to have engaged in sexual activity with the minor, who authorities confirmed is biologically capable of fathering a child. However, to determine if he is the father of the fetus, a DNA sample was collected and sent for forensic testing. The results are still pending. 23-year-old Surat teacher, who eloped with 13-year-old student, found five months pregnant Before the DNA results could be submitted, the accused approached the court seeking permission to terminate the pregnancy. Represented by her advocate, she made an appeal to the court, which subsequently requested input from both the investigating police and medical authorities. While the police sought additional time to respond, the Gynaecology Department of the hospital provided a detailed report confirming that the woman was 20 weeks and three days pregnant. According to sources, the medical report emphasised that continuing the pregnancy could lead to serious psychological and social consequences for the unmarried woman. Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, which permits abortion up to 22 weeks under certain conditions, the court approved the request. The abortion procedure has since been initiated. Police Inspector submitted the medical documentation to the POCSO court in compliance with legal protocols. The investigation remains ongoing, with the DNA results expected to play a key role in determining further action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The tutor has already been booked under BNS Section 137 (2) for abducting a minor.

Pakistan moving troops in forward areas, launched strikes at multiple locations: Indian govt
NEW DELHI: Pakistan's military is observed to be moving its troops to forward areas, India said on Saturday, terming it a provocative move as the two countries continued attacking each other's military facilities, dangerously escalating the ongoing conflict. The Pakistan military is observed to be moving their troops to border areas, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi said at a press briefing along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Officials said that Pakistan has also deployed heavy weaponry to target both Indian military and civilian areas, adding that the Indian Armed Forces are fully prepared for any eventuality. Wing Commander Singh said India was committed to on-escalation provided that Pakistan reciprocates. The officials also stated that Pakistan has been carrying out escalatory actions, predominantly using heavy-calibre weapons, missiles, and fighter jets to target military sites along the Western front. They added that the attacks have also included cowardly strikes on civilian infrastructure, including schools as well as medical facilities in Srinagar, Avantipura and Udhampur, terming it a deploarable act. Around 400 drones used to target military bases, places of worship: Centre on Pakistani escalation Col Qureshi explained that the Pakistan military is using unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs), long-range weapons, and other heavy equipment, attempting to hit more than 26 locations across India along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC). The targets included airbases in Udhampur, Pathankot, Adhampur, and Nalia. Pakistan military has resorted to unprofessional actions, targeting civil airbases in Srinagar, Awantipur, and Jammu, as well as schools and civilian infrastructure in an irresponsible manner, she said. At the LoC and IB, their fighter jets attempted to intrude at over 26 locations. The Indian Armed Forces neutralised most of the attempts. However, there was some damage at air force stations in Udhampur, Pathankot, Bhuj, and Bathinda, Colonel Qureshi said. Pakistan used a high-speed missile to target the Punjab airbase at 1.40 am, she added. Wing Commander Singh confirmed that India targeted Pakistani military assets in a retaliatory action and rejected Islamabad's claims of briging down India's S-400 air defence system. In a swift and calibrated response, Indian Armed Forces carried out precision strikes only at identified military targets. Pakistan has also engaged in a continued misinformation campaign, claiming destruction of the Indian S-400 system and airfields at Suratgarh and Sirsa. India unequivocally rejects these false claims, she said. Pakistans military bases in Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian were targeted through air-launched precision ammunition and fighter jets. The radar site in Pasrur and the aviation base in Sialkot were also hit with precision strikes. India ensured minimal collateral damage during these actions. Sialkot base was also targeted with precision weapons, Wing Commander Singh said. Pakistans use of civil flights as shields was highlighted during the briefing, with officials accusing Islamabad of taking cover behind civilian aircrafts. It is a matter of concern that taking the cover of civilian aircraft taking off from Lahore, Pakistan misused international air routes. So that they can hide their activities. Such tactics compelled Indian air defence system to act with great patience while ensuring civilian security, Col Qureshi said. India hits three Pakistan airbases in retaliatory strikes Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Misri reiterated Pakistans disinformation campaign, which falsely claimed the destruction of Indias S-400 system at Adhampur, the Brahmos Cruise Missile Base at Nagrota, and the Chandigarh Ordnance Depot. Wing Commander Singh also reported that at the Line of Control, drones and artillery are being used by the Pakistan Army to target areas such as Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, and Akhnoor. India has delivered a befitting response, causing significant damage to Pakistans military infrastructure, she said. Foreign Secretary Misri underscored that India does not wish to escalate the situation, provided Pakistan also behaves responsibly. Officials said Pakistans military continues to use multiple threat vectors, including long-range weapons, loitering munitions, and drones, to intrude into Indian airspace. They added that Pakistans air intrusion and harassment attacks targeted 26 locations along the LoC and IB, including Indian Air Force bases in Adhampur, Nalia, and Bhuj. Indias response has been swift and calibrated, with Pakistans technical infrastructure, command and control centres, radar positions in Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, Farkhor, and Sialkot being targeted with precision strikes, causing minimal collateral damage. Misri emphasised, We must not be misled by the tissue of lies being spread by Pakistan. Their consistent attempts to sow discord among communities in India continue to fail. He also confirmed that Additional Development Commissioner Rajkumar Thapa had been killed in a pakistani shelling in J&K's Rajouri on early Saturday morning. Terming Pakistans claims of Indian missiles targeting Shri Amritsar Sahib as ludicrous, Misri said, These attempts are doomed to fail. At the end of the briefing, Foreign Secretary Misri indicated that the situation remains fluid, adding, We are dealing with an evolving situation, and updates will follow.

23-year-old Surat teacher who eloped with 13-year-old student found 5 months preganant
AHMEDABAD: The case of a 23-year-old private tutor from Surat, Gujarat, who eloped with her 13-year-old student and was later found five months pregnant, has sent shockwaves across the country, raising urgent concerns about child safety in informal education settings. The scandal deepened after a medical examination revealed the womans pregnancy, and she claimed that the minor is the father, prompting authorities to order an immediate DNA test. The ordeal began on the afternoon of 25 April, when the teacher, previously a trusted figure in the boys life, vanished with the child in broad daylight, triggering panic and a swift search operation. CCTV footage from their residential society captured the teacher leaving with the boy, a sling bag over her shoulder, indicating premeditation. The teacher had been tutoring the boy for the past three years, and for the last year, he had become her only private student, a closeness that dangerously escalated over time. Police investigations revealed that the alleged sexual abuse took place at the tutors residence and later at a hotel in Vadodara while the pair was on the run. Before fleeing to Surat, the 13-year-old reportedly handed over a few of his clothes to the woman, who later purchased additional items for their escape. Surat teacher abducts 11-year-old student, caught 390 kilometres away after four-day manhunt The pair travelled across several cities-including Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Jaipur, and Vrindavan-before being apprehended near the Gujarat-Rajasthan border after a four-day manhunt. Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhagirath Gadhvi told The New Indian Express, A medical examination has revealed that the woman is five months pregnant. She has claimed that the minor is the father of the child. Based on her statement, we have ordered DNA testing. During questioning, both individuals admitted to having engaged in a physical relationship over several months. A formal case has been registered against the woman under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for kidnapping a minor, alongside serious charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexual exploitation. Senior officials have called the incident a grave breach of trust and power, warning of urgent gaps in protections across both formal and informal education spaces. Legal experts have also flagged the glaring ignorance around grooming tactics used by adults in positions of influence. The case remains under intense investigation, with further legal action pending the results of the court-ordered DNA test.

Late on the night of 28 April, a police convoy, accompanied by an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) team and 50 JCB machines, reached the site. Demolition work began at 7 a.m. the next morning. The AMC first razed around 150 illegal embankments at the farmhouse of Lalla Bihari, who is known for his involvement in illicit activities. Gujarats Minister of State for Home Affairs, Harsh Sanghvi, said, The area near Chandola Lake, where four illegal Bangladeshis associated with Al-Qaeda were caught, has been demolished. This area also saw the highest drug seizures and was a hub for illegal activities. Many illegal Bangladeshis have been arrested from here. We are committed to securing every inch of state government land by clearing it. Over 1.25 lakh square metres of land had been encroached upon by illegal Bangladeshis. More than 6500 people , mostly Muslims, were detained from the area on Tuesday and were accused of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. However, only 489 out of the detained have been confirmed by the authorities as lacking valid documents to prove Indian citizenship. Meanwhile, the Surat Police in coordination with central agencies, discovered Bangladeshi contact numbers and chat records on 50 mobile phones seized from suspected Bangladeshi immigrants. Over 100 people among the 150 people arrested from Surat have been confirmed by the authorities as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. The suspects had reportedly entered India through agents and were residing illegally in Surat, police said. Bangladeshi numbers and chats were found on the mobile phones of 50 other suspects during the operation, prompting further investigation. A joint interrogation was conducted with Surat Police, the State and Central Intelligence Bureau (IB), where each suspect was questioned in depth, a police source said. All arrested individuals are currently held at the Bhikshuk Gruh in Surat, where authorities are thoroughly verifying their identities through document checks. The investigation has concluded, and agencies are now preparing detailed reports to be submitted to the Central and State Governments for further action. Surat Police officials confirmed that the operation is ongoing, with more action expected in the coming days.
Surat teacher abducts 11-year-old student, caught 390 kilometres away after four-day manhunt
AHMEDABAD: Surat City was left stunned after a 23-year-old teacher abducted her 11-year-old student and fled, but it was a hidden second mobile number that eventually led police to their dramatic capture 390 kilometres away, four days later. The incident unfolded on the afternoon of April 25 when the teacher, a trusted educator, vanished with the young boy in broad daylight, igniting panic and a citywide manhunt. Surat DCP Bhagirath Gadhvi told the media, After intensive investigation, the police arrested the female teacher and the student from Raigad on Tuesday. The investigation revealed that both were facing scolding from their families and ran away due to boredom. The police are continuing the investigation. Initially, investigators faced a dead end. The teacher had cunningly switched off her primary mobile phone shortly after fleeing with the boy from a railway station, erasing all digital trails. CCTV scans of the railway station and local bus stands proved futile, prompting police to suspect the duo had boarded a private bus. But just as the trail began to go cold, officers traced a second, previously unknown mobile number, still active, which turned the case around. With this critical lead, Pune Police deployed a four-member team in a race against time. Around 4:00 a.m., officers intercepted a bus near Shamlaji on the Rajasthan border and pulled the teacher and student off before they could vanish again. The rescue marked the end of a tense four-day pursuit during which the pair had travelled across 390 kilometres from Surat by bus, narrowly staying ahead of the law. Initial interrogation revealed that the teacher and the boy had known each other for three years, with both families frequently in contact. The boy, a fifth-grade student and son of a grocery merchant in Surats Pune area, had been attending her tuition classes, and for the past year, he had become her only private student, a closeness that gradually turned into mutual affection. Pressure from the teachers family to arrange her marriage, along with growing frustration over the boys academic struggles at home, reportedly set the stage for the desperate plan. The teacher is believed to have meticulously planned their escape and convinced the boy to flee with her. CCTV footage from their residential society captured the teacher leaving with the boy, a bag slung over her shoulder, suggesting premeditation. Police launched an intensive search operation, forming four dedicated teams. Further scrutiny of CCTV footage from April 25 and earlier revealed the teacher had arrived at Parvat Patiya in a rickshaw after taking the boy, where she purchased a trolley bag, presumably to carry more belongings. Investigators also discovered that the school bag she carried had been bought two days earlier, further confirming that the abduction was not impulsive. This disturbing case has since shocked the residents of Surat and sparked heated discussions across the city.
Demolition drive launched in Ahmedabad following detention of 6500 suspected Bangladeshi immigrants
The civic authorities and police in Ahmedabad on Tuesday launched a mega demolition drive in the Muslim-majority area of Chandola lake, days after 6500 people, mostly Muslims, were detained and accused of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. While the demolition drive is being spearheaded by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, around 2,000 policemen, headed by Joint Commissioner of Police-Crime Sharad Singhal, were deployed at the site to maintain law and order, Police Commissioner G S Malik said. Malik, who reached the lake to take stock of the demolition drive, told reporters that all police stations in the city were put on 'alert' to deal with any situation in view of the demolition drive at Chandola Lake. Singhal said the AMC started the drive early in the morning with 50 teams, each equipped with an earthmover machine. The last demolition drive at Chandola Lake was carried out in 2009. Recently, a survey conducted by the AMC revealed that government land had been encroached upon again, and shanties were constructed around the lake. Illegal Bangladeshi immigrants lived in areas like Siyasatnagar and Bengali Vaas surrounding this lake, he said. According to Malik, an FIR is being registered against Mehmood Pathan alias Lallu Bihari, the alleged mastermind behind the encroachment on government land at Chandola Lake. He also allegedly helped illegal Bangladeshi immigrants get rental accommodation and Aadhaar cards, according to officials. We have deployed 2,000 policemen along with 20 companies of the State Reserve Police (SRP) to assist the AMC in clearing illegal constructions at Chandola Lake, which includes areas like Siyasatnagar and Bengali Vaas. Police in the entire city have also been put on alert. Strict action will be taken if anyone tries to take the law into their hands, Malik said. He claimed the minority community residing near the lake wants the authorities to take action against Bangladeshi immigrants living in illegal settlements. The top cop said the authorities have also razed Pathan's farmhouse built illegally on the banks of the lake. We have started the process of registering a first information report against Pathan. He helped illegal immigrants get accommodations using bogus rent agreements and procured Aadhaar cards. It is also suspected that some people in the area had also acquired passports, Malik said. Deputy Municipal Commissioner DC Parmar said nearly 2,000 illegally built houses and other properties were identified for demolition, and 50 per cent of the work was completed by noon. He said Chandola Lake is a water body, and no construction is allowed around the lake. Earlier on Monday, DGP Vikas Sahay said around 450 Bangladeshi nationals were found to be residing illegally in Gujarat after police launched a crackdown and detained nearly 6,500 Muslims, who are suspected to be citizens of the neighbouring country. Sahay said following mega search operations in Ahmedabad and Surat, similar exercises were undertaken across the state, with 6,500 suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants detained and their identities being verified.

Of these, around 60 have been confirmed as Bangladeshi nationals. Deportation proceedings will be initiated after a thorough investigation. Police sources said. The arrested women were involved in casual labour and prostitution. They initially entered through West Bengal and later moved to Surat, where they created bogus documents. Most of them have been found to be in contact with Bangladesh. Those residing illegally will be deported. Vadodara police intensified their search operations for the third straight day, identifying 14 Bangladeshi nationals 9 by city police and 5 by railway authorities. Deportation proceedings are underway as per legal protocols. Meanwhile, 70 suspects are currently being grilled. In Ahmedabad, the crackdown has unearthed 143 Bangladeshis so far. Alarmingly, investigations revealed that some detainees had been deported up to three times. Officials also discovered that several individuals carried documents from Uttar Pradesh, yet could not even speak Hindi, raising serious questions about the authenticity of their papers.
