Cong corporator ousted over Love Jihad case The Indore Municipal Corporation has ended the membership of Congress Corporator Anwar Qadri, also known as Anwar Dacoit. The decision was passed by voice vote amid a walkout by Congress members. Qadri had surrendered before a local court in a June 2025 case that alleged funding of men to target and convert women from other communities. He is also accused in several other criminal cases in Indore, including forcing women into prostitution. The corporation followed rules that provide for dismissal after such charges. Once a strong local leader, Qadri now faces political isolation. Luxury Cars, Gold And Honey: Recovery From Retired Madhya Pradesh Engineer

Madhya Pradesh HC directs govt to relocate toxic ash from Union Carbide
BHOPAL: Unsatisfied with steps taken by the state government for containment of the residual ash generated from incineration of toxic waste of Union Carbide factory site, the Madhya Pradesh government has directed the government to relocate the ash to a place which is far away from human habitation, vegetation and water sources. A division bench of the HC, comprising Justices Atul Sreedharan and Pradeep Mittal directed the state government to file a report citing alternate sites for containment of the ash (instead of presently planned containment site which is just 500 meters from human habitation in Dhar district). The HC further asked the government to inform the court, whether a global tender has been floated to get the best technical expertise of companies/agencies, executing a work of this nature and having dealt with similar cases of containment of toxic chemical waste. Importantly, this is the second time in over two months that the MP HC has directed the state government to relocate the 899 tonnes of ash (generated from the 55-day incineration of the 358 tonnes of toxic waste at the treatment-storage-disposal facility in Pithampur-Dhar) to a site without human habitation. Before its Wednesday order, the HC had also issued similar directions on July 31 . Earlier also, this Court had voiced its apprehension of containing the residual waste proximate to human habitation, as the residual waste is still toxic in nature and if not contained properly, and God forbid, if the containment structure itself is breached collapses on account of a natural disaster like an earthquake, then it would be another disaster in the waiting. This Court had directed the state to examine alternate sites for containment of the toxic ash. In this regard, the State may examine the alternate sites given in one of the intervention applications and consider the feasibility of moving the toxic ash to such places which are far away from human habitation, vegetation and water source, so that even in the event of the containment collapsing, its ill effects are nil to minimal. While mentioning about another intervention application filed in the matter, the HC stated in its Wednesday order, The concerned application discloses that the tests that have been conducted on the toxic ash, still reveal the presence of mercury, which is higher than the permissible limits as disclosed in the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Boards Report of August 12, 2025. In support of the structure envisaged for the containment of the toxic ash, the state has made an animated video presentation to contend that the containment structure (barely 500 meters from human habitation) is a state-of-the-art structure employing most modern safety measures. However, it doesnt satisfy the court. In times when new roads are washed away in rains and bridges collapse and worse still, when railway overbridges are constructed with a right-angle turn, reducing this state to a laughingstock nationwide, reposing unflinching faith in the engineering prowess of the state may be an invitation to disaster. The anxiety of this court should not be misconstrued as mocking the state but far from it, the caution being exercised by the court is the result of being once bitten, twice shy. The Union Carbide India Limited factory at Bhopal was safe, till disaster struck in December 1984. Thus, when it comes to the issue of containing the toxic ash, perhaps till Kingdom Come, no amount of caution is in excess. The HC will next hear the matter on November 20. Importantly, the entire 358 tonnes of toxic waste lying at the worst industrial tragedy-struck defunct Union Carbide plant in Bhopal was relocate safely after 40 years on the HCs order on January 1-2, 2025 to the TSDF in Pithampur industrial town of western MPs Dhar district. Based on the HCs directions, the waste was incinerated at the same TSDF in 55 days in May-June, consequently generating 899 tonnes ash, which is planned to be safely disposed in secured landfill/containment structure, close to the TSDF where the waste was burnt.
MP CM Mohan Yadav accuses TN govt of inadequate support over cough syrup poisoning deaths of 23 kids
BHOPAL: As the death toll of children from cough syrup poisoning continued to rise in Madhya Pradesh, the states chief minister Dr Mohan Yadav has accused the Tamil Nadu government of not providing adequate support on the issue. According to official sources, the death toll of children at hospitals in Nagpur and Chhindwara stands presently at 23, including 20 from Chhindwara, one from Pandhurna and two from Betul district. In an associated development, Ranganathan, the 75-year-old owner of the Tamil Nadu based pharmaceutical unit, which made the cough syrup, was arrested by the MP Polices SIT team from Chennai on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday and will be brought to Chhindwara soon. The deaths have happened due to manufacturing defects of the concerned cough syrup, which was being made at the factory in TN. So, the timely action and sampling should first have been initiated there. The Congress leaders who are questioning us should better go to Tamil Nadu and question their alliance partners government in that state, as to how the licence of the factory was renewed. How was it operating in a small place, Yadav said after taking stock of the medical treatment of the affected kids in Nagpur in Maharashtra. Amid the possibility of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi going to Chhindwara on October 12 to meet the families who have lost their children, the MP CM dared the former AICC president to go to Tamil Nadu and question his partys alliance partner DMK's government on the issue. How was the drug licence issued to the unit, how come it was renewed, how was it allowed to function from a small place? Rahul Gandhi should go to TN and ask these questions to the state government there. Weve been affected by the defective cough syrup which was made in TN, why dont the Congress and Rahul Gandhi raise the issue with the Tamil Nadu government, Yadav said. Centre slams TNFDA for delaying Sresan Pharma licence cancellation after Coldrif cough syrup kills 20 children Yadav visited the hospitals in Nagpur where kids from Chhindwara, Betul and Pandhurna districts are under life-saving treatment following acute renal failure caused by poisoning of the Coldrif cough syrup manufactured at Sresan Pharmaceuticals in TNs Kancheepuram district. Weve already acted against our drug controller and inspectors for failing to perform random sampling of the syrups samples. Action has also been initiated against the doctor who particularly prescribed Coldrif cough syrup, which was sold through the medicine store run in his wifes name. Our police have arrested the owner of the drug manufacturing company in TN, were not going to spare anyone in the matter, the MP CM said. Meanwhile, in a briefing about the arrest of Ranganathan from Chennai, the Chhindwara district police superintendent Ajay Pandey said he was running the pharmaceutical unit as a proprietorship entity along with chemical analysts and other team members. As he is a blood pressure and sugar patient, were getting his thorough medical check-up done in TN, after which he will be produced before a local court there for bringing him on transit remand to Chhindwara. Pandey said, As the investigations progress, more accused will be added. They may be doctors who prescribed the same syrup (and it caused damage to childrens health) or vendors and retailers through whose distribution channels the syrup went to the kids. He said, Our 12-member SIT is probing the case and six members of the team are in Chennai currently to bring Ranganathan to Chhindwara. We are still in the initial stages of the probe. Based on the questioning of the pharmaceutical firm owner, it will be established from whom the hazardous chemical was sourced and more accused will be added. There was a strong possibility of Ranganathan fleeing from the country as his cellphones were switched off, but our team finally managed to nab him. The SP-Chhindwara said the autopsy of three kids has already been conducted, but the post mortem reports cannot be made public. We are working on getting more information with the help of the forensic science lab and experts, he added. Meanwhile, sources privy to the ongoing probe revealed that the TN based pharma making unit, which was first registered as a private limited firm in 1990, was later struck off from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs register, yet continued operating under a proprietary structure, raising serious questions about regulatory oversight. Six escape unhurt after private aircraft skids off runway in UP's Farrukhabad
LUCKNOW: A major accident was narrowly avoided on Thursday morning when a private aircraft, registered as VT-DEZ, skidded off the runway at Mohammadabad airstrip in Uttar Pradeshs Farrukhabad and stopped just short of the boundary wall. All six people on board, including four passengers and two pilots, had a narrow escape. The incident happened around 11.15 am when the aircraft, operated by Jetserve Aviation began its take-off roll. However, after covering about 400 metres on the runway, the plane veered off course and lost alignment, finally stopping just short of the perimeter wall. According to officials, the aircraft was a twin-engine charter plane with a 2+6 seating configuration and was scheduled to take off for Bhopal. Pilots Nasib Baman and Prateek Fernandes were at the controls at the time of the incident. The passengers onboard included Ajay Arora, Deputy Managing Director of Woodpecker Green Agri Nutripad Pvt Ltd, who had arrived with a team to assess the upcoming beer manufacturing unit in the Khimsepur industrial area. Sumit Sharma, from SBI, Rakesh Tikku, vice president (operations), and Manish Pandey, UP project head were also on board. Police and administrative officials, including SDM Sadar Rajnikant Pandey, CO Ajay Verma, and Mohammadabad police, rushed to the site soon after the incident. A fire brigade was also dispatched as a precautionary measure. Mohammadabad Kotwali SHO Vinod Shukla said preliminary findings suggest that low air pressure in one of the aircrafts wheels may have caused it to veer off the runway. He confirmed that all passengers were safe and later left the site by car. It was later confirmed that the group had arrived in Farrukhabad, on Wednesday, and was scheduled to return on Thursday morning when the incident occurred. A video seen on social media showed the aircraft lying on the ground with its wings and propeller clearly visible. The aircraft is considered to have sustained only minor damage, though its front section was visibly tilted towards the ground.
NEW DELHI/CHENNAI/BHOPAL: The Centre has pointed fingers at the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration (TNFDA) for not yet cancelling the licence of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Coldrif cough syrup, linked to the deaths of at least 20 children in Madhya Pradesh. According to sources in the Union health ministry, the TNFDA was directed by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to cancel the licence of the pharma company based in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, on October 4. The TNFDA is yet to cancel the license of the company despite CDSCO recommendations, sources told TNIE . However, Tamil Nadu State Drug Control Department on Wednesday initiated criminal proceedings against G Ranganathan, proprietor cum manufacturing chemist of Sresan Pharmaceuticals. A special investigation team (SIT) from Madhya Pradesh arrived in Chennai and held discussions with the Tamil Nadu State Drug Controller. Ranganathan, who has been in the pharma manufacturing field for over 40 years, is absconding. The SIT lodged a police complaint against Ranganathan, sources said. Since Sresan is already shut, the departments show cause notice was pasted on the doors of the unit in Kanchipuram and on Ranganathans residence in Chennai. The notice gives Ranganathan time till October 12 to submit his response. Possibly on October 13, formal orders to cancel Sresans licence would be issued. Its current licence is valid till December this year, officials said. Company owner absconding with wife: MP police Convictions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 stipulate a minimum jail term of 10 years, which may extend up to life imprisonment and with a fine of not less than Rs 10 lakh, said S Gurubharathi, Deputy Director of Drugs Control and Licensing cum Controlling Authority, TN. Officials said the show cause blames the manufacturer of misbranding. For, the label of the container ought to have carried a warning that fixed dose combination shall not be used in children below four years of age. This is mandatory as per gazette notification dated 15 April 2025 of the Union health ministry and circular dated 18 December 2023 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. Failure to do so violates Section 18(a)(i) read with Section 17 (b) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to travel to Chhindwara district on October 11 or 12, where he will meet the bereaved families. Till now 20 children from Chhindwara, Pandhurna and Betul have died due to the unfortunate and painful incident. Five children are being treated in government and private hospitals in Nagpur and all efforts are underway to save their lives, MP deputy CM and health minister Rajendra Shukla said. Our SIT in coordination with the local police in TN, has conducted investigations and raids at multiple locations, but the companys owner has gone into hiding along with his wife. Were also investigating the role of the companys directors and other officials, who might be directly or indirectly associated with the adulteration of the syrup, a senior Chhindwara police officer told this newspaper. Cough syrup unit was to be shut after December Ranganathan, 75, has been running the Kanchi unit at its rented location (pic) since 2013. The owner of the building said Ranganathan had not paid rent for the last six months. Madhya Pradesh HC flags mobile phone 'intoxication' among police personnel
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has flagged to the state police department higher-ups about intoxication of mobile phones/social media among the police personnel and called for remedial measures. Hearing a writ petition recently, the HCs division bench (at its principal seat Jabalpur), comprising Justices Anand Pathak and Puspendra Yadav mentioned in its order, This Court craves the attention of senior officers of the police department about intoxication of mobile phones/social media among the uniform-clad departments, like the police. Nowadays it is commonly observed that guards on bungalow duties, court duties, law and order duties or duties inter alia where police personnel posted at a place where they have to do sedentary jobs, are involved in observing social media. This creates indiscipline, casualness in duties and at times incriminating social media clips, pollute the mind and affect the disposition of police personnel. This issue deserves the attention of senior police officers and remedial measures as well, the HC said in its six-page order recently. The HC recommended incorporation of sensitisation programs in police training centres for constables, sub-inspectors and other officers and a mechanism for the supervision of on-duty police personnel's social media presence. The HC further directed to send a copy of the Courts order to the states Director General of Police, state PHQ-Bhopal, ADG (Administration) and ADG (Training) of the state police for information and contemplation. The two-judges bench passed the order, while hearing a writ petition filed by a former police guard/constable against his compulsory retirement from service in 2007, on being caught sleeping under influence of alcohol during duty at the bungalow of a protectee in Gwalior district. The Court ruled that the decision to compulsorily retire the policeman was not disproportionate to the charge levelled against him and thus, rejected his appeal. The petitioner was the member of guard duty at the residence of a Protectee, therefore, he was required to be more vigilant for the purpose he was deputed and this intoxication may breed indiscipline and may cause accident/mishap at the hands of guard himself, who is meant to protect the person for whose security he is deputed as guard. Apart from the present departmental proceedings, earlier also the petitioner was punished for remaining absent on the duty. Thus, the conduct of petitioner also assumes importance as he appears to be habitual of dereliction of duty, the HC stated in its order.
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government on Monday suspended two drug inspectors and a Deputy Director of the food and drug administration amid the probe into the death of 14 children from Chhindwara due to suspected renal failure, linked to the consumption of a toxic cough syrup. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also transferred the state's Drug Controller, Dinesh Maurya, after chairing a high-level meeting at his residence. The suspended drug inspectors are identified as Gaurav Sharma and Sharad Kumar Jain, who are posted in Chhindwara and Jabalpur, respectively. The suspended Deputy Director is identified as Shobhit Costa, an official said. Yadav visited Parasia later in the day to meet the kin of the deceased children. The chief minister said strict action will be taken against those responsible for the tragic deaths of children, and no negligence will be tolerated. Police have formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the death of 14 children, officials said on Sunday. Dr Praveen Soni from Chhindwara has been arrested for alleged negligence, while a case has been registered against the Coldrif cough syrup manufacturing company. The government has banned the sale of Coldrif cough syrup, manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceutical, Kancheepuram (Tamil Nadu), with officials saying the drug samples have been found to contain a highly toxic substance. Of the children who died, 11 were from Parasia sub-division, two from Chhindwara city, and one from Chaurai tehsil. Eight children are being treated in Nagpur -- four in a government hospital, one at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and three in private facilities, according to officials. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Umang Singhar, on Monday slammed Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla over the deaths of children in Chhindwara after allegedly consuming a contaminated cough syrup. He demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each for the victims and a job for their families, and questioned CM Mohan Yadav for not taking action against the Drug Controller. Singhar criticised the Madhya Pradesh government over the deaths of 14 children in Chhindwara linked to an allegedly toxic cough syrup. He said, The company has been banned, but why is the doctor being targeted? The Drug Controller, responsible for overseeing manufacturers, should be held accountable. He urged the Chief Minister to act immediately, summon the Health Minister, conduct a judicial inquiry, provide compensation to each victim, and offer jobs to their family members. Earlier, former CM Kamal Nath demanded a Supreme Court-monitored SIT probe, standardized testing of all suspected cough syrups, and strict action against those responsible. Have to take PoK back: RSS chief talks oneness of India
BHOPAL: Addressing a gathering in eastern Madhya Pradeshs Satna district on the concluding day of his two-day visit to the BJP-ruled states Vindhya region, RSS Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday stressed the oneness of India as a nation. Many Sindhi brothers are sitting here. I am very happy that they did not go to Pakistan. They came to the undivided India. This should be passed on to the new generation, because we have one home. Circumstances may have sent us here from that home, but that home and this home are not separate, he said, further expressing, The whole of India is one home. But someone has usurped one room of our house, where we kept our table, chair and clothes. We have to take it back. Calling for unity, he emphasised, We are all one, all Sanatanis and Hindus. The British divided us by showing us a broken mirror. But we must now unite by seeing into a good mirror. If we look at a mirror with spiritual traditions, we will certainly appear in one. Speaking at the event marking the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Baba Mehar Shah Darbar building, the RSS chief emphasised, All languages in India are our national languages, and every citizen should know at least three languages. Amid growing controversy over languages in the country, the RSS chief noted, All Indian languages are our national languages. He offered a three-language mantra for every citizen. Every citizen should know at least three languagesthe home language (mother tongue), the state language, and a national language, he said.
MP reports two more likely child deaths from Coldrif syrup after 11 earlier fatalities
BETUL: Two children from Amla block in Madhya Pradesh's Betul district have died allegedly after taking Coldrif cough syrup, which has been banned now as tests showed presence of a toxic chemical called diethylene glycol, health officials said on Sunday. Amla Block Medical Officer Dr Ashok Narware identified the two children as Kabir (4) son of Kamlesh of Kalmeshwar village, and two-and-a-half-year-old Garmit, son of Nikhlesh of Jamun Bichhua village. They were taken to Parasia in neighbouring Chhindwara district for fever treatment where their condition worsened. It is yet to be confirmed whether the deaths were caused by the syrup. I have been directed to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report, Dr Narware said. Both children developed symptoms such as kidney issues and abdominal swelling and were referred from Betul to Bhopal for advanced care. No post-mortem was conducted but reports of severe kidney complications were sent to the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CM&HO), Dr Narware said. Incidentally, Amla is about 150 kilometres from Parasia sub division of Chhindwara where 11 kids have died after allegedly consuming toxic cough syrup. Family members alleged Kabir's death followed the consumption of the syrup prescribed by Parasia-based physician Dr Praveen Soni, who was arrested late Saturday night and suspended from service. As per Parasia police, Soni, despite being a government doctor, was practising at a private clinic and prescribed the syrup. Centre makes U-turn on cough syrup; Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, TN ban it As per Kabir's kin, he was first taken to Dr Soni on August 24 after he complained of fever, and then two doctors in Parasia were consulted when his condition did not improve and the duo indicated kidney complications. The boy was later taken to Nagpur and then to Bhopal, where he died on September 8, they added. Garmit died on October 1 in his village while under treatment, Dr Narware said, adding his family had also consulted Dr Soni earlier. Amla Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Shailendra Badonia said the administration is gathering detailed information, while Betul Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Manoj Hurmade said he has sought a detailed report from the BMO. I can conclusively pinpoint the exact cause of the deaths only after I get the report from the BMO. An advisory has been issued directing all private medical stores and Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras to dispense medicines or syrups only against a registered doctor's prescription, Hurmade said. Sale of medicines without a doctor's advice has been prohibited and drug inspectors have been told to intensify checks and stop the sale of suspicious or unverified drugs, he added. The Tamil Nadu drug control authorities, in their report dated October 2, declared the Coldrif syrup sample (Batch No SR-13; Mfg: May 2025; Exp: April 2027) manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals, Kancheepuram, as adulterated because it contained diethylene glycol (48.6% w/v), a poisonous substance which may render the contents injurious to health. The Tamil Nadu government on Friday banned Coldrif. Following the TN report, the Madhya Pradesh Food and Drug Administration issued instructions to stop further sale and distribution of Coldrif and immediately seize any available stock for investigation under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. It also ordered that other products manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals be removed from sale pending testing. Tests samples of Coldrif cough syrup found to be 'adulterated': TN food safety dept

Acute renal failure caused deaths of nine kids after suspected cough syrup poisoning in MP
BHOPAL: Children under five in Madhya Pradeshs Chhindwara district are continuing to die of acute kidney failure after being prescribed a combination of medicines, including two common cough syrups , by local doctors. With three more deaths over the last few days, the death toll has increased from six to nine , while at least three other kids under treatment at a hospital in neighbouring Nagpur (Maharashtra) are battling for life with dialysis and ventilator support. Since September 4, nine kids, including Shivam Rathore, Vidhi, Adnan, Usaid, Rishika, Hitansh, Chanchlesh, Vikas and Sandhya, have died. 13 other kids have been under treatment in hospitals in Chhindwara and Nagpur, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM-Parasia) Shubham Kumar Yadav said on Friday. Out of the five kids who were admitted at the Chhindwara District Hospital, one has been discharged after full recovery, while two others are on the path of recovery. The two remaining kids are still under intensive treatment. In Nagpur, out of the eight hospitalised kids, the condition of three kids remains highly critical, as they are currently on dialysis and ventilator support, the SDM said. He added that, according to biopsy reports of the children who died in Nagpur hospitals, Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), and not Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), appears to have caused their deaths. Detailed tests of water and other samples from the areas where the children lived, conducted by premier institutions including the National Institute of Virology (NIV-Pune), ruled out contaminated water, vector-borne diseases, or rats as causes of the health issues. Analysis of the childrens medical histories showed that the cough syrups were common across cases. Six children die in three weeks in Madhya Pradesh; cough syrup poisoning suspected A report from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2022, showed that some chemical toxicity of cough syrups manufactured in India had caused similar fatalities in Gambia. With a similar pattern emerging here also, an advisory was issued to restrain the use and prescription of the two concerned cough syrups in the entire Chhindwara district, Yadav maintained. Echoing similar concerns, Dr Pawan Nandurkar, the paediatrician at the Chhindwara District Hospital, said, The biopsy reports of the kids who died during treatment at hospitals in Nagpur, have revealed that there has been some toxin-mediated injury to the kidneys. Analysis of the medical history of patients (including the kids who died) reveals that in 80% cases, the cough syrup Coldrif was administered to the kids. Old pharmacological researches suggest the possibility of such a cough syrup with a chemical Diethylene Glycol (DEG) or Ethylene Glycol (EG),. Suspecting chemical contamination in the cough syrup and its possible link to kidney damage, causing the deaths, the district administration issued an advisory banning the use, sale, and prescription of such cold cough syrups. Doctors have been advised to avoid prescribing combination medicines, use injections cautiously due to potential kidney impact, and conduct kidney function tests immediately if any child shows signs of urinary problems. Approximately 15-16 kids were referred to hospitals in Nagpur over the last few days, out of which six died. Three to four are stated critical there, while a new patient has been sent there today, Dr Nandurkar said. Meanwhile, the states Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister, Dr Rajendra Shukla, who had recently stated that cough syrups were not linked to the childrens deaths, spoke to the media on the issue again on Friday. Samples of 12 medicines have been sent for testing, out of which reports of three medicines dont suggest anything in them which couldve caused the deaths of the kids. The reports of the remaining nine medicines will be with us by tonight, before which it cannot be concluded what actually caused the death. No banned syrup can be sold in the market, but sometimes some batches of any medicine could cause problems, but before the test reports dont come to us, nothing can be said. Meanwhile, as per reports from Chhindwara district, most of the kids (who died) were administered preliminary treatment in Parasia area (coal belt) of Chhindwara by a common medical practitioner, Ravindra Soni (a government doctor posted at Parasia Community Health Centre who also runs a private clinic). Soni doctor (Ravindra Soni) prescribed the medicines, including cough syrups, to our children and also administered injections to them. But instead of improving, their condition worsened, ultimately compelling us to rush them to Nagpur, where they died later, parents of deceased Adnan, Usaid and Vikas told journalists in Chhindwara on Friday.

Six children die in three weeks in Madhya Pradesh; cough syrup poisoning suspected
BHOPAL: Authorities in Madhya Pradeshs Chhindwara district have issued an advisory restricting the prescription, sale, and use of at least two cough syrups after six children, aged one to seven, reportedly died between September 4 and 26 from kidney-related complications and anuria. Analysis of the medicines administered to the six minors found two cough syrups in common. With samples of the syrups sent for detailed testing, the district administration has advised doctors to refrain from prescribing them and has restricted their sale and use. Till the time test reports of the syrup samples are out, an advisory has been issued to restrain the use, sale and prescription of those syrups. Doctors in the district have also been advised strictly to prescribe only symptom-specific medicines, like prescribing just Paracetamol for fever, instead of prescribing a wide spectrum of medicines, including those for cough and cold, Chhindwara district collector Sheelendra Singh told TNIE on Wednesday. The six children, aged between one and seven, from different parts of the Parasia area (also known as Koylanchal for its coal mining activity), initially suffered from cold and mild fever. Local doctors prescribed routine medications, including cough syrups. After taking the medicines, the children initially appeared to recover, but within days their symptoms returned, accompanied by a sharp decline in urine output. Most of the children who later died from kidney-related complications were admitted to private hospitals in nearby Nagpur, Maharashtra. The children only had mild fever and cold, but after the cough syrup was administered to them, their condition worsened, resulting in the stoppage of urine and associated complications, like swelling in the body, regular bouts of vomiting, ultimately resulting in deaths, one of the grieving parents said. Chhindwara district chief medical and health officer Naresh Gonare said, The blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of the minors who died in hospitals at Nagpur, were sent for virology tests. But the tests didnt reveal any vector-borne/viral ailment, like Japanese Encephalitis or Chandipura virus. Anuria (alarming decline in urine output caused by kidney malfunction) seemed to be the common problem in all six kids who died. Suspicion of toxicity and contamination in the cough syrups subsequently arose, prompting authorities to send samples to Bhopal for detailed analysis, official sources said. Unconfirmed reports indicate kidney biopsies of the deceased children revealed the presence of diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical often linked to pharmaceutical poisoning. Water samples from affected areas are also being sent to a national-level testing laboratory for analysis. Teams from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are in Chhindwara to investigate the deaths, which may be linked to contaminated cough syrups. Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) of the state health department are also conducting door-to-door screening and surveillance of residents for similar health problems. No new case has been reported in the last 24 hours from anywhere, the Chhindwara district collector said. The ICMR team has sent samples from the children and the medicines to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for further analysis.

BHOPAL: Senior students at the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) campus in Indore, conspired to trigger Nepal-like Gen Z protests on campus to avenge the punishment imposed on them for ragging a junior student last month. A detailed probe by the anti-ragging committee of the state-run institution has revealed that a group of senior students, punished for their involvement in ragging, orchestrated the entire plan and sought to enforce it through first-year students. According to the committees findings, the juniors were recently called to a restaurant near the institute, where the seniors instructed them to create fake email and social media (X) accounts and use these accounts to retweet messages posted by the seniors, thereby preparing the ground for the protests. The juniors were threatened with Batch Out if they failed to comply. The committee further reported that several second-, third-, and fourth-year students of the institute, around 30 to 40 in total, were present during the meeting with the juniors at the restaurant. As part of the destructive plot, the juniors were directed to damage CCTV cameras and remove the digital video recorder (DVR) from the hostel. A third-year student, Aman Patelwho was previously associated with the RSS-linked ABVP but later ousted by the student outfit for unruly actshas emerged as the prime conspirator of the entire plot. His younger brother, Anuj Patel, a first-year student staying in the hostel without authorisation, monitored the juniors to ensure compliance with the directives of Aman and other senior students. Following the investigation, the committee has recommended that the police lodge an FIR under the appropriate BNS sections against four students, including the two brothers, Aman and Anuj Patel, as well as Amans batchmates Adarsh Makwana and Aditya Sharma. The police will also be asked to help identify the other senior students present at the restaurant meeting, and similar action is likely to be initiated against them. The committee has also named several first-year students involved in damaging windows, CCTV cameras, and stealing the DVR from the hostel. According to DAVV vice-chancellor Dr Rakesh Singhai, Some senior students, after being found guilty of ragging a junior student last month, were awarded multiple punishments, including monetary fine, expulsion from the hostel, and debarment for one semester. Possibly miffed with that action, the same senior students called the juniors at a restaurant recently and rendered them necessary instructions. Subsequently, destruction of CCTV cameras and removal of the DVR happened at the hostel; it remains to be established who all students were involved in it. Further detailed probe is needed about the alleged planning by the students for protests. A meeting of the Proctorial Committee will be held later today in the matter, while a detailed complaint is also being sent to the local police, particularly for lodging a case about the damage to CCTV cameras and removal of DVR, Singhai added.
Pragya Singh Thakur calls for Muslim boycott
BHOPAL: Known for making provocative statements, former Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur has appealed to Hindu women and girls to stay away from Muslim men and to not allow any Muslim man to enter their houses even for repair works. This comes nearly two months after she was acquitted of criminal charges by a special court in Mumbai in the 2007 Malegaon blast case. The saffron clad ex-BJP lawmaker made a series of controversial remarks in Bhopal during a Durga Vahini (VHPs women wing) Navratri event on Sunday. There is no brother-sister bond in Miyas (Muslims). If they dont respect their own sisters, how can they respect you as their sister? Muslim men are looking to deceive and trap Hindu women and girls. Dont ever become sisters of Muslims, Thakur said while addressing the Durga Vahinis Shastra Pujan event. I appeal to the Matri Shakti (women) to take a vow not to allow Vidharmis in your home. Dont allow those men to enter your house for light fitting, repair of water taps, to drive your vehicles or any other work. All our women and girls should take a vow of not falling into the trap of Vidharmis, she said, adding, Also, take a pledge to rescue from their clutches our women and girls who have already been trapped. These small oaths will protect our women and girls from the Vidharmis. We will have to take another oath of not consuming edible products made by the Vidharmis. Further, we will have to create groups, which will identify shops operated by Vidharmis near our temples. Once such Vidharmis are selling prasad near our temples are caught, they should be thrashed and handed over to the law enforcement, Thakur said. Without naming the countrys first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, she rued that he became the first PM of the independent India. It is said that we gained Independence without a shield. We made that person a PM, who neither won votes nor the nations hearts, and he did no service to the country. We made a man who sent his clothes abroad to be washed, flattered the British and bowed before English women our PM.
Suspected kidney infection claims life of seventh child in MP's Chhindwara in 30 days
CHHINDWARA: A 4-year-old boy from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh has died due to a suspected kidney infection, marking the seventh such child fatality in the district this month, officials said. Authorities have collected different samples from the areas concerned to identify the source of infection, the initial symptoms of which include high fever and difficulty in urinating, they said. The deaths have been reported mainly from Tamia and adjoining Koylanchal areas, about 55 km from the district headquarters, where several other children are undergoing treatment in private hospitals, the officials said on Sunday, as authorities grappled with the rising number of such cases. In the latest case, Vikas Yaduvanshi (4), a resident of Dighawani village in Chhindwara district, died at a hospital in Nagpur in neighbouring Maharashtra on Saturday. His last rites were performed at his native place on Sunday, the officials informed. Chhindwara collector Shailendra Singh said government doctors have been instructed to provide the best possible medical care to children showing symptoms of the infection and remain fully proactive. Patients requiring immediate advanced treatment should be referred to AIIMS Nagpur (about 150 km from the area). If needed, arrangements for the Madhya Pradesh government's 'PM Shri Air Ambulance Service' will be made to airlift patients to save lives, Singh told PTI on Sunday. He said Chief Minister Mohan Yadav spoke to him over the phone and asked him to ensure that patients receive prompt and best treatment. District hospital paediatrician Dr Deepak Patel said seven children -- aged between one and seven years -- have succumbed to the infection so far. A team from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, recently surveyed the affected areas and collected samples for testing, he added. A health department team from Bhopal also collected water samples from households. These have been sent to a laboratory in Pune. The exact cause of the deaths will be known after reports arrive, Dr Patel said. Acting Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Naresh Gunnade said the first suspected case of the infection was reported on August 24 followed by the first death on September 7. According to officials, the initial symptoms included high fever and difficulty in urinating. Residents of affected villages remain anxious as authorities continue efforts to identify the source of the infection and curb further casualties. At present, seven children -- three in Chhindwara and four in Nagpur -- are under treatment and their condition is out of danger, stated the officials.

Five-year-old electrocuted at garba pandal in Madhya Pradesh
BHOPAL: A five-year-old boy, Hasan Shah, was electrocuted after coming in contact with an iron pipe near the entrance of a garba pandal in western Madhya Pradeshs Ratlam district. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when the minor, while playing outside his house, went to the nearby garba pandal and came in contact with an iron pipe near the entrance of the pandal. With electric current running into the concerned metallic pipe, possibly due to defective electric connections in the pandal, the minor suffered electric shock and fell unconscious. Coming to know about the incident over the phone, Hasans family rushed to the spot and took the minor to the Ratlam District Hospital, where the doctors declared the boy dead. Angered over the incident, the boys family and other members of the minority community protested, demanding sternest action against the wrongdoers. While confirming the incident, the Ratlam district police superintendent Amit Kumar told the TNIE that a case of causing death by negligence has been registered at the citys Station Road police station under Section 106 BNS against five organisers of the garba event in Arjun Nagar area. The five men booked in connection with the tragic incident, including Jitendra Bairagi, Ajay Bairagi, Chetan Bairagi, Dharmendra Verma and Rahul Hada. As per another Ratlam police officer, the role of the local electricity department staff in the negligence will also be probed.

Kunwar Vijay Shah is facing an FIR for his sister of terrorists remark on Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. His (Vijayvargiya) statements are correct, as in the Indian culture, no brother kisses his sister in public. Kissing ones sister in public is not our culture and not at all in line with our customs and traditions. For those who indulge in such acts, they should do it in their homes and not on the crossroads, Shah said in Khandwa district on Friday. Pointing towards fellow MLA Kanchan Tanve during his speech, Shah added, She is also my real sister, so would I kiss her in public? Indian culture and civilisation do not teach this. Opposition, Congress has been staging protests against the former national BJP general secretarys recent remarks about LoP Rahul Gandhi kissing his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in public. Protests against Vijayvargiya, demanding his sacking from the state cabinet, have been reported from Bhopal, Indore, Shivpuri and some other districts. Slamming Vijayvargiya for the controversial remarks, the state Congress chief Jitu Patwari has said that, due to his failure to become the states CM, Vijayvargiya, who is nearing 70 years of age, seems to have lost mental balance, which is why he made such remarks. He said Vijayvargiya's remarks demean the sacred brother-sister bond and is also an insult to all sisters during the ongoing Navratri festival. We appeal to the states CM Dr Mohan Yadav to get a good mental health specialist to examine and treat Vijayvargiya. If the government and BJP cant do it, then all Congress workers are ready to donate money for funding Vijayvargiyas mental treatment, Patwari said. On Thursday, while addressing an event to mark the birth anniversary of BJP ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya in the states Shajapur district, the MP urban development and housing minister Vijayvargiya, while speaking about western culture Vs Indian culture, had raised the issue of LoP (Rahul Gandhi) kissing his young sister in public. The current leader of the opposition kisses his young sister in full public view on the crossroads. This isnt our culture; its actually representative of foreign culture. It shows a lack of values, but its not his fault as he has grown up abroad, the former BJP national general secretary said. While referring to the LoP's past pictures/visuals where the latter is seen hugging and kissing his sister (Priyanka Gandhi Vadra), the minister said, We treasure our rich and ancient Indian culture, we dont even drink water in the village where our sisters have been married. Whenever my father went there, he carried with him a jug full of water. With his statements triggering a political row, Vijayvargiya clarified on Friday. I didnt question the sacredness of the relationship (brother-sister bond), I was only referring to western culture while addressing the event on Thursday, which marked the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, whose Ekatma Manav (integral humanism) philosophy was in line with the Indian culture. All relations, be it husband-wife, father-son, brother-sister, are sacred, but there is a Maryada (dignity) of every relationship. I alsokiss my sisters head out of love, but not at all at the crossroads. What I said was that everyone can embrace and kiss their sisters, but if such acts are done on the crossroads, its actually reflective of western culture as such acts arent acceptable in Indian culture.
Villagers thrash mentally unstable man to death for murdering five-year-old boy in MP
BHOPAL: A five-year-old boy was brutally murdered inside his house by a 24-year-old mentally unstable man in western Madhya Pradeshs Dhar district on Friday. Angered over the gruesome killing of the minor, the villagers, instead of handing over the accused to the police, tied and thrashed him brutally, leading to his death during treatment at a hospital. The accused has been identified as Mahesh Meda, a native of Bagdi village in Jobat area of neighbouring Alirajpur district. According to Dhar district police superintendent Mayank Awasthi, A case of murder has been lodged in connection with the minors brutal killing. Following the accuseds post-mortem report, a separate case will be lodged in connection with his death too. Investigations have revealed that Mahesh, who hailed from Jobat (Alirajpur) , was missing for the last few days. His family has claimed that he was mentally unstable, Awasthi added. The spine-chilling incident happened on Friday in the house of one Kalu Singh in Ali village under the Kukshi police station area of Dhar district. The accused entered Singhs house and sat on the cot. Even before the family could ask him who he was, Mahesh picked up a sharp spade-like tool lying in the house and attacked five-year-old Vikas. He first severed the minors neck from the torso and then struck his shoulder, leaving the body mutilated. Hearing the cries of Vikass mother, villagers rushed to her house and managed to catch hold of Mahesh before he could flee on the motorbike. We rushed to the spot and found Mahesh lying on the spot. He was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to wounds, during the course of treatment, the SP-Dhar said.

Row over Kailash Vijayvargiyas remark on Rahul Gandhi kissing his sister in public rages on in MP
BHOPAL: The controversy over Madhya Pradesh senior cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiyas remark about Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi kissing his younger sister on a public crossroads continues to draw political criticism, even after the former BJP national general secretary sought to clarify his comments on Friday. Vijayvargiya told reporters that he did not question the sacredness of the brother-sister bond, but was referring to what he described as Western cultural practices during an event marking Pandit Deendayal Upadhyayas birth anniversary in Shajapur district on Thursday. All relations, husband-wife, father-son, brother-sister, are sacred, but there is a Maryada (dignity) to every relationship. I also kiss my sisters head out of love, but not at a crossroads. My point was that public displays like these reflect Western culture, which is not acceptable in Indian tradition, he said. The remarks sparked a strong response from the state Congress chief Jitu Patwari, who accused Vijayvargiya of making statements that demean the brother-sister bond. Patwari said the comments were particularly objectionable as they came during Navratri, when Goddess Durga is being worshipped in households across the state. He also suggested that Vijayvargiya, now close to 70, appeared to be affected by his unfulfilled ambition to become Madhya Pradesh chief minister and advised him to consult a mental health specialist. Vijayvargiyas comments on Rahul Gandhi are the latest in a long line of controversial statements by the senior MP minister. In 2022, while addressing a public gathering in Indore, he drew criticism for remarks about womens clothing, saying he did not find girls in skimpy or short clothes attractive and emphasising that women should be treated as goddesses. Around the same time, amid protests over the Agnipath scheme, he stated that party offices would prioritise Agniveers for security duties. Vijayvargiya has also courted controversy over his statements while addressing a seminar in his home city Indore in 2020 in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, when he raised suspicions about Bangladeshi labourers working on his construction projects and highlighted heightened security concerns. In August 2024, he again made headlines when he warned of a potential civil war in the country 30 years from now, citing demographic changes and urging efforts to strengthen Hindu identity. Thursdays remarks, referencing past photographs of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hugging and kissing in public, were framed by Vijayvargiya as a critique of cultural propriety. The current Leader of the Opposition kisses his young sister in full public view on the crossroads. This is not our culture, it reflects foreign influence and a lack of values, he said, stressing the importance of preserving traditional Indian customs. Political observers note that Vijayvargiya has repeatedly generated headlines with statements on cultural norms, womens conduct, and security issues, often sparking debates on public morality and political rhetoric in Madhya Pradesh.

BHOPAL: A 50-year-old man who had spent 13 years in jail for murdering his two wives in 2010 has been arrested by Madhya Pradesh police for desecrating the graves of several women in the communally sensitive Khandwa district to perform a Tantric ritual. The accused, identified as Ayub Khan (50), is a native of Mundwara village under Jawar police station area of Khandwa district. Ayub was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly tampering with the graves of at least six women at the Bada Kabristan graveyard in Khandwa city and another graveyard in Sihada village. He had desecrated the graves on the night of May 19 and later on September 22. Investigations revealed that Ayub held a superstitious belief that performing a Tantric ritual with the hair of dead women would enhance his strength. Khandwa district police superintendent Manoj told TNIE that Ayub was released from Indore Central Jail around five months back. [The accused] has admitted to committing the three offences of tampering with the graves of women at Bada Kabristan and Sihada Kabristan on Amavasya (No Moon) nights, first on May 19 and recently on September 22, the SI further said. Police inquiry revealed that Ayub had murdered his two wives at separate places in Khandwa in 2010, and two separate murder cases were lodged against him at the Moghat Road Police Station. He was later convicted by the court and awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. During his time at the Indore Central Jail, a fellow inmate had told him about a Tantric ritual that would help him increase his strength and power; the ritual required the hair of dead women and must be conducted on a No Moon night. Owing to good conduct inside the jail, Ayub had been released from jail five months back, after which he did a recce of the two graveyards during the day to identify the graves of women, which he would revisit on May 19, a No Moon night, and dig up. While the police were initially unable to track the perpetrator of the May 19 cases related to tampering of six graves at Bada Kabristan and the Sihada Kabristan over the next four months, CCTV cameras were installed at those graveyards. On September 22, another No Moon night, Ayub had returned to the graveyards and tamper two more graves. This time, he was caught in the act by the CCTVs placed in the graveyard. Working on the case, the cops managed to identify the accused and arrested him on Tuesday. The CCTV footage of Bada Kabristan graveyard showed an unidentified naked man standing near one of the two tampered graves and later climbing the pole to put Kafan (shroud) on the camera to conceal his identity. Importantly, the accused Ayub Khan, besides being convicted for killing his two wives in 2010, was also accused in at least eight cases of theft at Khandwas Jawar police station between 2008 and 2010. The swift cracking of the highly sensitive case has ensured that the communally sensitive Khandwa district didnt plunge into any potential law and order problem during the ongoing festive season, particularly as the Muslim community and its religious leaders were incensed over the September 22 nights shocking incident at the citys biggest graveyard.

BHOPAL: A three-storey dilapidated building collapsed on Monday night in Indores densely populated Ranipura-Jawahar Marg area, leaving several people trapped under the debris. Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), have so far managed to pull out 10 people alive, who were rushed to MY Hospital for treatment. However, 23 individuals, including a woman, are still believed to be trapped. The building, estimated to be 1015 years old, housed three families, including that of owner Shambhu Bhai, and collapsed suddenly at around 9 p.m. It also contained two to three godowns on the ground floor. Around 1718 members of at least three families lived in the building, said a neighbour, Qamruddin. Indore District Collector Shivam Verma confirmed that 13 people were present in the structure when it collapsed. Ten persons have been rescued safely, while two to three are still stranded. Efforts are underway to rescue them, he said. Residents of Koshti Mohalla-Daulatganj, where the building was located, suspect that continuous rainfall may have worsened existing cracks in the structure. State Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, the local BJP MLA, suggested that waterlogging in the buildings basement could have triggered the collapse. He also noted that the building stood in an illegally developed and congested locality. A road is to be developed through the area, and the government was prepared to rehabilitate residents under the PM Housing Scheme. I am coordinating with local representatives but refraining from calling officials to avoid disrupting rescue operations, he told a news channel. This is the second major mishap in Indore within a week. On 15 September, a speeding and allegedly intoxicated truck driver caused a deadly crash in a no-heavy-vehicle zone on Airport RoadBada Ganpati Road, killing three people and injuring 12 others.
Building collapse in Indore leaves several trapped, rescue efforts ongoing
BHOPAL: A five-storey dilapidated building collapsed on Monday night in the Ranipura-Jawahar Marg area of Indore, Madhya Pradeshs most densely populated city. Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), have so far managed to save six to seven individuals from the debris, who have been rushed to MY Hospital. However, at least two to three more people, including a woman, are still believed to be trapped. The building, estimated to be 1015 years old, housed three families, including that of the owner, Shambhu Bhai. It collapsed suddenly at around 9 p.m. The structure also included two to three godowns (warehouses) on the ground floor. Around 17 to 18 people from three families lived in the building, said a neighbour, Qamruddin. Indores Additional Collector Roshan Rai, who is overseeing the rescue efforts, confirmed that 67 people have been safely rescued. Senior police officer Vinod Dixit stated that one of the trapped women has been in contact with rescue teams via phone and is helping guide them to others still buried under the rubble. Residents of Koshti Mohalla-Daulatganj, where the building was located, suspect that ongoing rainfall may have worsened cracks in the ageing structure, leading to its collapse. Its possible there were 1012 people inside when the building fell. While several have been rescued, a few remain stranded, said a local source present at the scene. This marks the second major incident in Indore within a week. On 15 September, a speeding truck driven by an allegedly drunk driver ploughed through vehicles and pedestrians in a no-heavy-vehicle zone on Airport RoadBada Ganpati Road, resulting in three fatalities and injuries to 12 others.
Woman practising Garba Kidnapped In MP's Mandsaur; seven arrested
BHOPAL: A young woman was allegedly abducted at gunpoint by her own family members, including two women from a Garba practice session in Mandsaur district on Saturday evening. All seven accused, who are the womans family members, including two women, have been arrested. They were produced before the court and subsequently sent to judicial custody, said Vinod Kumar Meena, Superintendent of Police, Mandsaur, on Sunday. The abduction, which was captured on CCTV cameras at the practice venue, prompted swift action by the Mandsaur police. Several hours later, officers successfully traced and safely rescued the woman. Investigations revealed that the young woman had been married off against her wishes by her family. She later left home and had been living independently elsewhere in the district. On Saturday, seven individuals stormed into Bhavsar Dharamshala, located in the Mandsaur Kotwali police station area, where Garba practice was taking place. CCTV footage shows two men and a woman entering the hall. One of the men was seen wielding a pistol, threatening attendees who attempted to intervene. The video, which has since gone viral, also shows the woman being dragged away through a narrow lane by the accused, as bystanders tried to intervene and stop the abduction. The entire police apparatus was put on alert immediately. Multiple police teams from various stations were deployed. The vehicle used in the abduction was traced near Chandwasa Chowki, under Shamgarh police station limits, and the woman was rescued safely, added SP Meena. The arrested individuals have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as the Arms Act.
Garba Row in MP: BJP, Hindu groups demand traditional dress, ban on non-Hindus
BHOPAL: Backless attire, Bollywood music, and the presence of non-Hindus at Garba pandals have become key concerns for activists associated with Hindu organisations and lawmakers from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the ten-day Shardiya Navratri festival begins on Monday. The demand originated in Khandwa, a communally sensitive district in southwestern Madhya Pradesh. No Western clothing (including backless attire) should be permitted at any Garba pandal. The festival must be celebrated entirely in a traditional Indian manner, and wearing traditional Indian dress should be mandatory. Additionally, entry should only be granted upon presentation of valid identification. Garba is a Hindu festival, so non-Hindus should not be allowed to participate, said Madhav Jha, district convener of the Hindu Jagran Manch. A leader from another right-wing outfit in Khandwa went further, calling for separate Garba events for men and women. The Khandwa district police have also taken steps to ensure that the festivities remain free of obscenity and disturbances. Garba organisers have been instructed to conduct events in a completely traditional manner, with no vulgarity or obscenity. Bollywood songs will not be allowed at any Garba venue to preserve the festivals cultural integrity, said Superintendent of Police Manoj Rai. In Indore district, roughly 140 km from Khandwa, senior BJP leader and former Culture Minister Usha Thakur supported these demands. It is time for our religious leaders to ensure that Garba pandals are organised only by true sadhaks (spiritual seekers). The trend of women and girls attending Garba events in revealing or inappropriate attire is worrying. Only traditional clothing should be permitted in the spirit of the festival, said Thakur, a four-time MLA representing Dr Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow). Thakur, who has long advocated for restricting the entry of non-Hindus at Garba venues, reiterated her position. I have raised this issue for the past 20 years. Islam prohibits idol worship, so why are members of that community attending Garba events, often by concealing their true identities? If they are genuinely inclined towards Sanatani traditions, they should return to the Hindu religion. Her views were echoed by BJP MP from Ujjain, Anil Firojiya, who stated: No non-Hindus should be allowed into Garba pandals. ID proof, particularly Aadhaar cards, along with kalava (sacred thread) and tilak should be checked. If a non-Hindu is found inside, legal action should be taken, just as in previous years. In Bhopal, similar concerns were raised by three-time BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma. Men attending Garba should be required to wear tilak on their foreheads, partake in the goddesss prasad, wear dhoti-kurta, and ideally bring along their parents and relatives. Anyone who wishes to embrace Sanatan Dharma and engage in Devi Aradhana (worship of the goddess) is welcome, he said.
Sloth bear that killed two villagers found dead in MP
BHOPAL: A female sloth bear that mauled two men to death and critically injured another was mysteriously found dead two days later in the forests of eastern Madhya Pradeshs Singrauli district. With the cause of the bears sudden death still unclear, the state forest department is relying on forensic analysis of the animals body samples, including blood tests, to determine what led to its demise. Confrontation marks on the bears body indicate it is the same animal involved in the attack on three villagers on the evening of 17 September, which resulted in two fatalities. However, only forensic analysis can conclusively establish the cause of death, said Akhil Bansal, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Singrauli. Speculation has emerged in the area, with unconfirmed reports suggesting the bear may have consumed human flesh, possibly contributing to its death. However, forest officials have dismissed these claims in the absence of scientific evidence. The bears carcass was discovered just two days after the attack, not far from the location of the incident. But there is no evidence to support claims it consumed human remains. Only forensic testing can confirm or deny this, Bansal added. The attack occurred on the evening of 17 September, when 45-year-old guest teacher Ganesh Bais was grazing goats in the Khanua-Jamgadi forests and was fatally attacked by the bear. Another villager, Heera Agariya (45), was also killed after attempting to rescue Bais. A third man, Shivkumar Patel, who accompanied Agariya, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment in Baidhan town. The forest department has committed to covering the medical expenses of the injured villager, while compensation of Rs 8 lakh each will be provided to the families of the deceased after post-mortem reports are received. Although officials in Singrauli have refrained from speculating about the bears cause of death, sources within the forest department elsewhere in the state suggest that rabies infection cannot be ruled out. Sloth bear activity is not uncommon in the Vindhya region and eastern Madhya Pradesh. Their presence is frequently reported in Sidhi and Singrauli districts, bordering eastern Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, with regular sightings particularly in the Sarai and Mada forest areas of Singrauli.
BHOPAL: A female sloth bear which reportedly attacked and killed two men and injured a villager in Singrauli district of eastern Madhya Pradesh recently has been found dead in the same jungles two days later. With mystery shrouding the ten-year-old bears death, the forest department staffers are now preparing to send the bears blood and other body samples for forensic analysis to ascertain the actual cause of death. The confrontation marks on the dead female sloth bears body have helped us in concluding that its the same bear which had a confrontation with three villagers, ultimately causing the deaths of two of them on September 16 evening. Only the forensic analysis of its samples can actually help us establish the actual cause of its death. We will soon send the samples for analysis, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO-Singrauli) Akhil Bansal told TNIE on Saturday. Meanwhile, there are speculations in the area and unconfirmed reports about the possibility of the bear having eaten the flesh of the men it attacked, which might have ultimately triggered its death. The bear was found dead two days after the September 16 incident. The body was found at a close distance from the spot of the confrontation with the men. But there is nothing to suggest that the bear had eaten human flesh and might have died due to it.Only forensic analysis of the dead bears samples can scientifically and factually establish the cause of the bear's death, Bansal said. On September 16 evening, a 45-year-old guest teacher Ganesh Bais was grazing goats in the Khanua-Jamgadi forests, when the female bear attacked him. Another villager Heera Agariya (45) who tried to save Bais too was attacked by the bear, consequently leading to Bais and Agariyas deaths. Another man Shivkumar Patel, who was accompanying Agariya sustained severe injuries in the same attack and is currently hospitalized in Baidhan town of Singrauli district. While the forest department will fund the medical treatment of the injured villager, compensation of Rs 8 lakh each will be paid to the dependents of the two deceased men once we get theirpost mortem examination reports, the DFO-Singrauli. The movement of sloth bears is not new in forest-rich eastern MPs Singrauli and Sidhi districts. Their movement has been reported in the Sarai and Mada forests of Singrauli district, which is neighboured by eastern Uttar Pradesh and northern Chhattisgarh.
13 women among 14 MP constable trainees caught forging leave documents
BHOPAL: Fourteen newly recruited Madhya Pradesh police constables, including 13 women, who were on the verge of completing their nine-month-long basic training course at the Police Training College (PTC) in Indore, are in trouble for allegedly faking and fabricating documents to obtain leave under the false pretext of preparing for and appearing in government exams. A preliminary enquiry conducted by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Training of MP Police, Nimisha Pandey, has established that the 14 trainee constables fabricated or forged documents to obtain leave on false grounds. As a result, they have been disqualified from the trainingjust around 10 days before its completionrelegated, and sent back to their original units (places of joining). Their respective unit heads will now conduct departmental enquiries (DEs) against them and take further disciplinary action. However, the trainees are not the only ones facing consequences. Departmental proceedings will also be initiated against the supervisory staff of the PTC-Indore, including two deputy superintendent of police (DSP)-rank officers, who sanctioned the leaves without properly verifying the documents. The 14 trainee constables, part of the 77th batch of state police constables, include 13 graduates, all women. Four among them had secured their positions in the MP Police on compassionate grounds due to the death of a parent or spouse. A majoritynine of the traineeshad been inducted into field units in the state capital, Bhopal, before commencing the mandatory nine-month training. Two others were from Gwalior district, while the remaining trainees were from the police units in Sagar, Mandla, and Betul districts. According to the circular issued by the Director General of Police (DGP), every new constable is required to undergo a rigorous nine-month basic training course, comprising two semesters of 4.5 months each, at various police training institutions across Madhya Pradesh. The circular permits a seven-day break between the two semesters. Additionally, a maximum of five days' leave may be sanctioned by the in-charge of the respective training facility on valid grounds. If a trainee had applied for any government exam prior to joining the police force, the unit head (i.e., the officer of the unit where the trainee was posted before training) can grant up to ten days' leave to prepare for and appear in the exam. However, the preliminary enquiry revealed that none of the 14 trainees had applied for the exams for which they had sought leave. Instead, they tampered with and fabricated permission letters originally issued to other trainees, and used these forged documents to obtain leave ranging from two to seven days. The preliminary enquiry has established that the 14 trainees faked original documents (permission letters of other trainees) and obtained leave through fraudulent means, said Additional Director General (ADG) Training of State Police, Raja Babu Singh, while speaking to The New Indian Express . Not only are the 14 trainees responsible for this misconduct, but the supervisory staff at PTC-Indore will also face action for dereliction of duty by approving the leave without verifying the documents, he added.
BHOPAL: In a first-of-its-kind move to promote investment in Madhya Pradeshs Vindhya region, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has announced the organisation of an Industry Summit in Prime Minister Narendra Modis parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, in November. With investors from one of the worlds oldest living cities, Varanasi, allegedly keen to invest in the neighbouring Vindhya region of Madhya Pradesh, the MP Chief Minister made the announcement while interacting with entrepreneurs in Chakghat (Rewa) one of Madhya Pradeshs gateways to eastern Uttar Pradesh. As many as 17 industrialists and representatives from the Ramnagar Industrial Area (spread across the Varanasi-Chandauli border) announced on Friday their plans to invest Rs 1,000 crore in the Rewa district. During one-on-one discussions, the investors from Varanasi told the MP Chief Minister that they were encouraged by the growing investment potential in the Vindhya region and the attractive investment policies of the MP government. With the delegation from Varanasi expressing to the Chief Minister their keenness to invest in Madhya Pradeshs Vindhya region, Dr Yadav announced that an Industry Summit aimed at hard-selling Brand MP would be held in Varanasi in November. Varanasi is emerging as a major development and business hub of Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the wake of the unprecedented infrastructural development carried out there since Prime Minister Narendra Modi won his first Lok Sabha polls from the constituency in 2014. Since becoming the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in December 2023, Yadav, with an eye on increasing investment in the central Indian state, has chaired multiple industry and investment summits in cities outside Madhya Pradesh, including Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Coimbatore and Ludhiana. Varanasi will perhaps be the first city in the adjoining Uttar Pradesh where the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister will hold a similar investment promotion summit in November. During the one-on-one meetings with investors in Chakghat (Rewa) on Friday, the Chief Minister invited entrepreneurs to particularly set up industries in sectors such as stubble and food processing. He informed them about the availability of ample land in Mauganj district (Madhya Pradeshs gateway to eastern Uttar Pradeshs Mirzapur district) and Teonthar (Rewa) and discussed dedicated plans for the development of industrial areas at both locations. He congratulated the region on the groundbreaking ceremony of a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant in Teonthar and expressed hope that it would benefit the local population, help resolve the issue of stubble burning and promote organic development. Addressing the Vindhya Vikas Sankalp Sammelan at Chakghat (Rewa) on Friday, Yadav announced the establishment of a new industrial area on 400 acres in Teonthar, the upgradation of the local Civil Hospital from 50 to 100 beds, the construction of a new ITI and the development of a river corridor along the Tamas River. He also performed the Bhoomi Poojan of a 125 crore Compressed Biogas Plant by IOCGPS Renewable Pvt. Ltd. The plant will purchase crop residue from farmers, thereby generating additional income and ensuring cleaner fields. While highlighting the Vindhya regions contribution to energy production in Madhya Pradesh, the Chief Minister said the region is emerging as the Energy Capital.
Madhya Pradesh CM directs health, agriculture depts to tackle deadly bacterial disease Melioidosis
BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has directed the health and agriculture departments in the state to jointly ensure adequate measures for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fatal bacterial disease, Melioidosis. The directions were issued to the principal secretaries of the two departments in the wake of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS-Bhopal) report, which has confirmed the detection of the fatal bacterial disease in at least 20 districts of the state. While maintaining that the health and prosperity of farmers and public are the governments top priority, the CM added that the government is committed to safeguarding the interests of the poor, farmers, and disadvantaged sections of society. According to an AIIMS Bhopal report, the spread of this disease has increased due to the expansion of paddy cultivation and the water resources in the state. Caused by bacteria found in infected paddy field soil, the disease requires awareness, timely detection, and proper treatment. Taking a serious stance on preventive measures against the fatal disease, whose symptoms are similar to tuberculosis (a concern among paddy farmers), the CM further instructed the two departments to conduct investigations in affected and high-risk areas. Farmers must be made aware and vigilant regarding the disease. If any farmer or person is identified as infected, effective arrangements for proper treatment must be ensured. AIIMS Bhopal has conducted training sessions on the subject, attended by administrators and doctors from the states medical colleges and hospitals. Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, commonly found in soil and water. Key symptoms include persistent or recurrent fever, continuous cough resembling tuberculosis, chest pain during breathing or normal activity, and no improvement despite TB treatment. The disease poses the greatest risk to farmers, as they are in direct contact with soil and water. Diabetes patients and excessive alcohol consumers are also more vulnerable. With timely testing, treatment, and precautionary measures, the disease can be prevented.

BHOPAL: Come Dussehra and it would not just be the effigies of ten-headed demon king Ravan, which will be burnt in Indore to mark the victory of good over evil. Two women who are accused of killing their children too will have their representative faces on the heads of the Surpanakha effigy, including Suchna Seth who allegedly killed her four-year-old son in Goa and transported the body in her luggage, and Priyanka Savita, a widow convicted in July this year by a court in central UPs Auraiya district for mercilessly killing her three children in June 2024. Surpanakhas effigy will reportedly be paraded through the city in a procession before being burnt at Indores Mahalaxmi Nagar Mela Ground at 6.30 pm on Dussehra. Already banners and posters of this first-of-its-kind Surpanakha Dahan event have been put up in some parts of Indore, and announcements inviting commoners to attend are being made. All that matters is the destruction of evil, irrespective of whether its male or female. The event is being organized with this theme in mind. Ravan symbolizes evil during his time, but in the modern world, such Surpanakhas also symbolize evil and destruction, Paurush organizations head Ashok Dashora said.

Indore Tragedy: DCP removed, eight cops suspended after speeding truck kills 3 and injures 12
BHOPAL: Less than 24 hours after an uncontrollable speeding truck knocked down multiple vehicles, killing at least three men and injuring 12 others in a no-entry zone of Madhya Pradeshs commercial capital, Indore, heads have started to roll. A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) was removed from his post, while eight police officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), were suspended with immediate effect. This action came as the states Chief Minister, Dr. Mohan Yadavwho is also the in-charge minister of Indore districtresponded after meeting the injured on Monday evening following the fatal incident. Following his visits to hospitals in Indore, the CM ordered the removal of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Indore Traffic) Arvind Tiwari and the suspension of eight other officers, including Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Suresh Singh. The seven other suspended officers include officiating Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Prem Singh, acting Subedar Chandresh Marawai, Inspector Deepak Yadav, and four constables who were on duty at the time. The action against these nine officers was primarily due to the police force's failure to stop the speeding truck from entering the no-entry zone, where heavy vehicles are prohibited between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., especially during peak evening hours on Monday. While initiating disciplinary actions against the DCP and eight other officers, the CM also announced rewards for Police Constable Pankaj Yadav and auto-rickshaw driver Anil Kothari, whose timely help saved many lives. Further, the CM announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the dependents of the three men who lost their lives in the tragedy, and Rs 1 lakh each to the 12 injured currently undergoing treatment at four private hospitals in Indore. The CM assured that the government would cover the entire medical expenses of the injured and also fund the education of the children of the deceased. Additionally, the government will assist in the repair or replacement of vehicles damaged in the incident. In a related development, the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, reportedly took suo-moto cognizance of the incident through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The High Court issued a notice to the Indore Police Commissioner, directing a detailed reply on the incident by September 23. Three persons have died so far in the mishap, including Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) staffer Kailash Chandra Joshi, retired professor Laxmikant Soni, and another man, Mahesh Khatwase. Meanwhile, ongoing police investigations have revealed that the truck was coming from the semi-urban Sanwer area of Indore district toward the city's Polo Ground area. However, the intoxicated driver lost his way and turned toward Airport Road via the Super Corridor. The truck hit multiple vehicles within a one-kilometer area after police reportedly attempted to stop it at Kalani Nagar for entering the no-entry zone for heavy vehicles. As the truck sped through the area, it continued knocking down vehicles between Ramchandra Nagar, Shikshak Nagar, and Bada Ganpati crossing. The driver has been arrested, and the truck owner is likely to be made a co-accused in the case.
Indore truck tragedy: Death toll rises to three, 12 injured; CM Mohan Yadav to visit victims
BHOPAL: The death toll from Monday evenings incident in Indore, caused by an uncontrolled speeding truck, has risen to three, while 12 injured victims continue to battle for their lives across four hospitals in the city. At least two of the injured are in a critical condition. The deceased have been identified as Kailash Chandra Joshi (a staff member of the Indore Municipal Corporation), retired professor Laxmikant Soni, and Mahesh Khatwase, a local resident. While Joshi and Soni died after being struck and run over by the truck at the scene, Khatwase succumbed to severe injuries at the hospital early Tuesday morning. Joshis motorcycle was trapped under the front portion of the truck, which subsequently caught fire due to the collision. Despite the efforts of local residents to rescue him from the burning vehicle, Joshi died on the spot from severe burn injuries. Twelve injured individuals are currently admitted to Geetanjali, Verma Union, Banthia, and Sri Aurobindo hospitals. Among the injured are a 35-year-old woman and her two-year-old son from the Leeds Enclave Housing Society, as well as an elderly couple from the same locality. Two of the injured remain in a critical state. Two killed, 13 injured as truck rams into crowd in Indore; catches fire Initial police investigations have revealed that the truck, loaded with foodgrain, was travelling from the semi-urban Sanwer area towards Indores Polo Ground. However, the driver, allegedly intoxicated, lost his way and veered off towards Airport Road via the Super Corridor. The police attempted to stop the truck at Kalani Nagar as it entered a no-entry zone for heavy vehicles, but the driver sped away, colliding with multiple vehicles over a one-kilometre stretch between Ramchandra Nagar, Shikshak Nagar, and Bada Ganpati crossing. The driver has since been arrested, and authorities have stated that the truck owner is also likely to be made a co-accused in the case. The incident has raised serious questions about the failure of enforcement mechanisms to prevent a heavy vehicle from entering a restricted zone during peak evening hours, despite a clear ban on such vehicles between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, who is also the minister in charge of Indore district, is flying to the city by state aircraft and will visit the injured in various hospitals. In the meantime, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sheo Shekhar Shukla has already been dispatched to Indore to lead an investigation into the failure. The ACSHome has been specifically tasked with conducting a pinpointed inquiry into how the truck managed to enter the city during restricted hours, endangering dozens of lives in the process.
Bhopal Diary | BJP MLAs controversial remarks ruffle feathers
Second-time BJP MLA Pannalal Shakyas apprehension at a public event in Guna district about a potential civil war-like situation arising in the country, in the wake of disturbances in South Asian nations, including Nepal, has exposed the ruling partys inability to rein in its loudmouth leaders. While addressing a sports event in Guna, the MLA also asked the district collector to submit his proposal to the Centre, requesting that military training be made compulsory for the 18-309 age group across the country. The state BJP has distanced itself from Shakyas statements. People are waiting to see how state BJP chief Hemant Khandelwal responds. Saffron party worker intimidates walkers Six years after PM Narendra Modi launched the Fit India Movement, an alleged BJP worker, Sunil Yadav, reportedly ordered digging up part of the walking trail at Bhopals Jamboree Maidan. This area is used by morning and evening walkers. The digging was apparently for an upcoming media house event. Some walkers, including a journalist, questioned Yadav, who is considered close to a first-time MP. He claimed BHEL owned the ground. He said it had been hired for Rs 1.8 lakh and, shockingly, asserted that the ground wasnt meant for walking, playing, or picnics. He told them in a tone that they should walk on the road and not bother him again. Rich dividends from CMs session in Kolkata As part of efforts to enhance investments in MP, CM Mohan Yadav recently chaired an interactive session with prominent industrialists in Kolkata. The deliberations resulted in investment proposals worth Rs 14,600 crore, which are expected to generate around 17,000 jobs in the central Indian state. The largest portion of the proposed investment came from Vikram Solar, which proposed to invest Rs 10,150 crore in the renewable energy sector, followed by a Rs 4,200-crore investment proposal across multiple sectors by the Ruia Group. Both of these proposals have the potential to create as many as 14,000 jobs in the state. Anuraag Singh Our correspondent in Madhya Pradesh singhanuraag.jaurno@gmail.com
Two killed, eight injured as truck rams into crowd in Indore; catches fire
BHOPAL: Two dead and eight injured after a truck ploughed into a crowd and multiple vehicles on Indores Airport Road on Monday evening. According to eyewitnesses, the truck struck several people and vehicles indiscriminately. One person died on the spot after his motorcycle became trapped under the truck and caught fire due to friction, which quickly spread and engulfed the truck itself. While the police claimed that the truck caught fire possibly due to multiple hits, unconfirmed reports suggested that angry residents may have set it afire. Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control and carry out rescue operations. The injured were shifted to Bhatia and Geetanjali hospitals, with local residents also pitching in to help. Out of the eight injured, two are in critical condition. The truck, which was loaded with packaging material was actually destined for Polo Ground. It will be probed how it actually came speeding on the Airport-Bada Ganpati Road. The driver of the truck has been detained and the trucks owner too will be made a co-accused in the case, additional commissioner of police (ACP-Indore Law and Order) Amit Singh said. He also ruled out the possibility of the truck having been set ablaze by angry residents. The pattern of the fire in the trucks front portion suggests that the blaze could actually have been triggered due to multiple vehicle hits, he said. Ex Indore mayor and local BJP MLA Malini Gaur meeting injured at Bhatia hospital in Indore Authorities are probing the exact cause of the accident and working to ascertain the exact number of casualties. A senior police official said, It will also be probed how the truck entered the no-entry area. According to sources, the truck driver was possibly drunk while driving the heavy vehicle. He is being taken for a medical examination. Sources added that the magnitude of injuries to residents, suggests the possibility of the death toll expected to rise.
RSS-associated Bharatiya Kisan Sangh protests against farmers' issues across Madhya Pradesh
BHOPAL: The RSS-associated agrarian outfit Bhartiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) took to the streets across BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh on Monday over farmers related issues , particularly problems related to the distribution of fertilisers. According to an official statement from the BKS in Bhopal, the party conducted a protest at all district headquarters across state and submitted memorandums to the respective district administrations. The party has also addressed this issue to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh CM Dr Mohan Yadav. Since the last many days, the BKS office bearers, along with thousands of farmers have been raising farmers' issues, including those about electricity problems, fertilizer related woes, spurious pesticides and seeds related problems via memorandums submitted at tehsil levels. But with the government not paying attention, the protests happened at the district headquarters level followed by the submission of memorandums to the district administrations on Monday, the BKS statement added. The BKS protests across the state on a host of farmers issues, including the fertiliser supply-related problem, happened three days after the opposition Congress workers had reportedly forced the motorcade of union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to stop on the road in Satna district of Vindhya region. Chouhan subsequently stepped out of his car and met the Congress activists and farmers led by local MLA Siddharth Kushwaha and assured to take up the matter about the supply of fertilizers with the central government and the MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav. In the recent past, there have been reports about police using force on farmers lined up outside fertiliser supply centres in Rewa and Bhind districts. On Monday, there were reports about clashes between two groups of farmers outside a fertiliser distribution centre in Gwalior-Chambal regions Morena district, which reportedly resulted in injuries to at least three farmers. In Sheopur district of the same region, angered over the delay in distribution of fertilisers, farmers reportedly pelted stones outside one of the centres. While the RSS-associated BKS activists submitted memorandums across the state at individual district headquarters on Monday on a host of farmers issues, the farmer outfits national general secretary Mohini Mohan Mishra will be in Ujjain on Tuesday. Mishra will participate in a mega farmers tractors rally over the issue of building a permanent spiritual city in Ujjain ahead of Simhastha (Kumbh Fair) 2028 through land pooling of farmers' lands. Meanwhile, the states CM allayed the farmers' fears pertaining to the Land Pooling Act, ahead of the BKSs Tuesday protest in Ujjain. Our feeling is that we should communicate with everyone and think about the interests of all. The government is working to promote religious tourism by working on security arrangements, better management and permanent structures in Maha Kumbh. The government is taking all the farmers along, the CM said.
BHOPAL: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has questioned the booking of an FIR against an Imam (a religious leader who leads prayers in the mosque) hailing from Bihar by police in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradeshs Khandwa district for staying at a mosque without informing cops. Article 19 of the Constitution renders a fundamental right to every citizen of the country (to move freely throughout the Indian territory and reside or settle anywhere in the country). The Khandwa district police superintendent needs to tell which is bigger, Article 19 of Indias Constitution or Section 223 of BNS? The Imam from Bihar has been booked in Khandwa (MP) by police only because he is a Muslim, Owaisi said. Back on September 9, an FIR u/s 223 of the BNS (which deals with the offence of disobedience to a duly promulgated order by a public servant) was lodged at the Khalwa police station of the communally sensitive Khandwa district of southwestern MP. The two men booked in the matter included Haji Hanif Khan Kharkalan (the caretaker of the mosque in Kharkalan village) and Akhtar Raza (an Imam from Kishanganj, Bihar). The local police lodged the case as the mosques caretaker allowed the Imam from Bihar to stay in the mosque for around a month, without informing the local police. According to the Khandwa district police superintendent Manoj Rai, As a part of the prohibitory orders imposed in the district under Section 163 BNSS, the owner/caretaker of any building needs to inform the administration/police before renting out the building or allowing anyone from outside to stay in the building. But, neither the mosques caretaker nor the Imam from Kishanganj (Bihar) informed the police, due to which the duo has been booked under Section 223 BNS. As per Khandwa district police sources, the Kharkalan village under Khalwa police station is a communally sensitive village, where a case was registered against a few men for shouting religiously provocative and abusive slogans during the Eid-Milad-Un-Nabi procession recently, outside the house of a family from the other community. Many residents of the village had told the police that ever since the religious leader from Kishanganj (Bihar) had started staying in a part of the mosque, communal tension had been growing in the village.
Bhagwat: Nation remains on path of development, proves predictions wrong
BHOPAL: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said that India is steadily moving forward on the path of development, defying global predictions made at the time of Independence. India has defied predictions of failure by drawing strength from the trinity of Gyan, Karma and Bhakti (knowledge, action and devotion) that has been handed down through faiths and communities, Bhagwat said in Indore, while releasing Parikrama Kripa Saar, a book by former union minister and Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Prahlad Singh Patel based on his Narmada Parikrama Yatra three decades ago. He recalled how global leaders, including former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, had predicted that India would not survive as a unified nation after the end of British rule. However, India proved them wrong by remaining united and resilient, he said. He noted that while Churchill believed India would collapse into division and chaos, it is now England itself that faces internal challenges, while India continues to progress and stay united. Bhagwat added that though the country had been divided in the past, it is now on the path to restoring unity and collective strength. He underlined that India had led the world for nearly 3,000 years without suppressing other nations or erasing identities. Despite leadership, our country never conquered or converted. There were continuous dialogue and respect for diversity, something missing in todays world, he said. The RSS chief also emphasised environmental conservation as central to sustainable growth. The event drew a prominent gathering, including MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar and other senior ministers and BJP leaders.
Most reservoirs become ineffective due to sedimentation, says study
NEW DELHI: Most of the dams in the country are facing severe siltation, which reduces their effectiveness in flood control and water storage, a new study by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) has said, highlighting that Himalayan and Indo-Gangetic plain rivers are classified as highly vulnerable and require immediate attention. The study analysed data from the Central Water Commissions recent report, Compendium on Sedimentation of Reservoirs in India, and found that a majority of the dams have lost over 50% of their total reservoir capacity. By 2050, 10 reservoirs in east-flowing rivers and 7 in west-flowing rivers are projected to surpass 50% storage capacity loss, posing a severe threat to water security, said the study, Sedimentation-induced vulnerabilities of large reservoirs in India, published in the journal Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment. Researchers Uma Madhuri Mogili and Somil Swarnkar from the IISER, Bhopal looked at nearly 370 large reservoirs capacity of over 100 million cubic metresin seven regions, including the Himalayan and Indo-Gangetic plains. Most of the analysed reservoirs were found to have become operational between 1939 and 1991. East-flowing rivers beyond Godavari, having nearly 160reservoirs, are a critical zone in meeting south Indias agricultural and industrial water needs, the researchers added. However, west-flowing rivers up to the Narmada were noted to have fewer, but larger reservoirs. According to the research, several reservoirs in the Himalayan and Indo-Gangetic plains rivers are classified as high or very high vulnerability, requiring immediate attention and management interventions. The limited number of reservoirs on rivers in the Himalayan region and Indo-Gangetic plains highlight terrain-related challenges in mountains in the former and a heavy reliance on natural river flows in the latter, the study said.

Drugs, chemicals worth over Rs 5 crore seized in Madhya Pradesh; two held
BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh police seized a major haul of drugs, associated chemicals and related processing equipment, collectively worth over Rs 5 crore in Agar-Malwa district on Friday evening. While two men identified as Ishwar Malviya and Daulat Singh Anjana were detained by the police from Agar-Barod Road from the two cars, which concealed the drug Ketamine, associated chemical and related manufacturing/processing equipment, the prime suspect, Rahul Anjana, who is reportedly a local BJP leader, managed to escape. Meanwhile, acting in the matter, the ruling BJP has expelled absconding suspect Rahul Anjana from the party. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team checked two cars near Ganesh Gaushala on the Agar-Barod Road and found a major haul of drugs, chemicals and equipment inside. The seizure included 9.25 kg of the drug Ketamine valued at over Rs 4.62 crore, 12.1 kg of ammonium chloride powder, 35 litres of isopropyl alcohol worth Rs 25 lakh and six grams of MD drug worth around Rs 18,000. Equipment being taken for the possible manufacturing of synthetic drugs was seized. The entire seizure was reportedly worth more than Rs 5 crore, which makes it perhaps the biggest drug and associated seizure ever in Agar-Malwa district. While the two men, Ishwar Malviya and Daulat Singh Anjana, have already been arrested and booked under the provisions of the NDPS Act, raids are being conducted to nab the absconding prime suspect, Rahul Anjana, who is reportedly the BJPs Tanodiya Mandal vice-president and also the son of a village sarpanch, Sevaram Anjana. Ongoing police investigations based on the absconding prime suspects mobile phone data analysis and also scrutiny of his financial transactions have revealed the possibility of major transactions between him and drug suppliers. Our teams are continuously working on the case. Samples of the seized drug and chemicals have been sent for detailed analysis to the state forensic lab, which will help us determine the actual purpose of taking the drug, chemicals and processing equipment in the car. One of the cars is owned by the absconding prime suspect Rahul Anjana, Agar-Malwa district police superintendent Vinod Singh told TNIE on Saturday. Meanwhile, according to the latest reports from the western MP district, Rahul Anjana has been expelled from the BJP following the development.
Woman acquitted in ex-partners murder case shot dead by current live-in partner in Gwalior
BHOPAL: A 32-year-old woman, who had earlier spent four-and-a-half years in jail on charges of killing her former live-in partner but was later acquitted, was shot dead by her current partner in full public view in Madhya Pradeshs Gwalior on Friday. The victim, identified as Nandini Kewat, was allegedly fired at multiple times by her live-in partner Arvind Parihar (33) outside the Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior city, triggering panic in the area. Eyewitnesses said the accused remained seated by the roadside brandishing a country-made pistol and pointing it at bystanders. A police team led by CSP Nagendra Singh Sikarwar reached the spot and, after firing a tear gas shell, overpowered the armed accused without any harm to civilians. Another police team rushed Nandini to the JAH Trauma Centre, where she succumbed during treatment. Ensuring no harm to the public, our team professionally managed to nab the killer, who has been identified as Gwalior native Arvind Parihar, Gwalior SP Dharamvir Singh told TNIE . Preliminary probe has revealed that Arvind and Nandini, had been in a live-in relationship since 2022. He claimed to have married her in a temple in 2023, but the relationship soured after Nandini lodged multiple cases against him. In one such case in 2024, she accused him of attempting to crush her with a car, leading to his arrest and a three-month jail term before she retracted her statement. Investigators said Nandini had allegedly been pressurising Arvind to leave his wife and share his property with her, which may have led to the fatal attack. Before her relationship with Arvind, Nandini had been in live-in arrangements with other men, including Nimlesh Sen, who was murdered in Datia district in 2017. Nandini was jailed for the crime along with another partner, Firoz Khan, but was acquitted by a court in 2022 after spending over four years behind bars. Police said further interrogation of Arvind is underway.
Math Not Math-ing: Bhopals 90-Degree Bridge Actually Bends 118 Degrees
In view of the latest findings, the Madhya Pradesh government has sought time from the court to reconsider its decision against the firm it had blacklisted
BHOPAL: Villagers in Madhya Pradesh are increasingly falling prey to multi-layered rackets that misuse their identification details to source fake SIM cards, fueling inter-state and international cyber frauds run from countries like Cambodia and Thailand. Ongoing crackdown by the MP Police against rackets sourcing fake SIM cards to be used for cyber crimes across the country and abroad have stumbled upon an increasingly prevalent modus operandi of some SIM card point-of-sale (PoS) who are using identification details, particularly biometric data (especially thumb impression/fingerprint details) to issue SIM cards in bulk for use by the cyber fraud rackets. Our detailed investigations and analysis has revealed that in around 60% cases of fake SIM cards, the thumb impression/fingerprints of people aged particularly between 18 and 45 years, especially those from rural areas, have been used to supply SIM cards for use by cyber fraud rackets operating from Indian states, like Jharkhand, West Bengal, Rajasthan, UP and Delhi, besides international cyber crime syndicates operating from South East Asian nations, particularly Cambodia and Thailand, superintendent of police (SP-Cyber Cell Bhopal) Pranay Nagwanshi told the TNIE on Friday. As per sources connected with the ongoing crackdown against the PoS indulgent in issuing fake SIM cards to cyber fraudsters, Villagers going to such PoS to get new SIM cards are often asked deliberately to give their thumb impressions on the thumb impression machines on the pretext that their thumb impressions arent getting properly scanned for verification purposes. While the impression is used just once to issue a SIM card to the concerned villager, the same impression, which was taken multiple times by the SIM card PoS, is then used to generate more SIM cards, which are handed over subsequently to local facilitators who supply them to cyber fraud rackets. The other most prevalent modus operandi is that many SIM card PoS are actually using men in rural areas, who in the lure of quick money are bringing their relatives and friends to the such PoS in the name of getting them registered for benefits under various government schemes and using their identification details, including fingerprints to generate fake SIM cards for cyber fraud syndicates. According to Nagwanshi, everyone who is giving fingerprint/thumb impressions on devices at SIM cards PoS, should be alert and question why the staff at the PoS is asking for the thumb impression/fingerprint scanning multiple times, to prevent their genuine ID details from being used to generate SIM cards for use by cyber fraudsters, including those indulging in Digital Arrests. These alarming revelations have been made during the ongoing Operation FAST (Forged-Activated-SIM-Termination) of the MP Police, which is being carried out across the state jointly by the state polices cyber cell and district police forces. The basis of Operation FAST is the detailed info provided to the MP Police by the Ministry of Home Affairs I4C (Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre). As per the data, as many as 6200 complaints from various states on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal were related to 7500 fake SIM cards issued by 3824 PoS across MP. Under the first phase of the Operation, which began 15 days back, the police have registered 50 FIRs against 94 SIM Card PoS and agents in 20 districts and 44 people have been arrested so far. As many as 100 fake SIM cards and seven thumb impression machines have also been seized. Similar operations are underway in the 35 remaining districts of the state based on the information given by the I4C. Were also working on regularly carrying out similar operations based on cyber fraud complaints being made directly to us in the state about mobile phone numbers being frequently used by cyber thugs, Nagwanshi added. In the next phase, we will probe the backward and forwards linkages of these notorious SIM card PoS, including the possibility of the cellular service providers staffs collusion with the tainted PoS and the facilitators getting bulk SIM cards for cyber fraud rackets from such point-of-sale contacts, he maintained. The hotspot districts so far The ongoing Operation FAST which, has so far covered 20 of the 55 districts in the state, has revealed that five districts, including Sidhi, Chhatarpur, Datia, Dindori and Shivpuri, have emerged as the prime hotspots of such SIM Card PoS, which are supplying fake SIM cards to cyber fraudsters. In each of these districts, more than 100 such SIM cards have been issued by the dubious PoS. Sidhi, which is located in the Vindhya region and is neighboured by Eastern UP, has emerged as the biggest such hotspot, with around 1000 such SIM cards having been issued by the dubious SIM Card PoS there, Nagwanshi said. This latest revelation means that the Vindhya region (which is neighboured by UP and Chhattisgarh both) is not just a fertile land of mule accounts (bank accounts used by criminals to receive, transfer or launder illegal money with or without the knowledge/complicity of the actual account holders), but also a hub for supply of fake SIM cards to cyber fraud rackets. In the past, there have been multiple cases of suspected hawala money, money meant for suspected terrorist and spying activities and money generated from cyber fraud, having been parked in mule accounts of people living in various parts of MPs Vindhya region, particularly Satna, Rewa, Maihar, Katni and Umaria districts. The second set of fake SIM cards hotspot districts, includes Gwalior, Indore, Damoh, Morena and Jabalpur districts.
A silent crisis is brewing in India. And it could hit millions by 2050
A study by IISER Bhopal warns that dams and reservoirs in India have lost nearly half their storage due to sedimentation, cutting power generation and flood protection capacity. Reviewing 300+ large reservoirs, it projects severe losses by 2050, especially in Himalayan and Indo-Gangetic regions. Experts urge urgent sediment management to prevent water insecurity, energy shortages, and ecological risks.
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the recent deaths of two newborns following rat bites at the Neonatal ICU (NICU) of Indores MY Hospital. Taking cognisance of the newspaper reports, the HCs division bench in Indore, comprising Justices Vivek Rusia and Jai Kumar Pillai, issued on Wednesday, show cause notices to the states principal secretary, public health and family welfare, Indore divisional commissioner, Indore district collector, Indore police commissioner and MY Hospitals head. Based on news published in the daily papers, the shocking incident came to our knowledge, which required it to be taken up by way of suo-moto Public Interest Litigation. Two newborn babies died in the government-run Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital, Indore, due to a rat bite. On the intervening night of August 31 and September 1, 2025, two infants admitted to the ICU of MY Hospital, Indore, were bitten by the rats, the HCs division bench mentioned in its two-page order. Prima facie, it appears to be a gross negligence on the part of the administration of MY Hospital, Indore, the HC mentioned in the order, while listing the matter for further hearing on September 15. The HC further asked the states additional advocate general to submit the states response before the Court, along with a copy of the autopsy reports of the two deceased infants. Importantly, two newborns, who hailed from Dhar and Dewas districts -- both suffering from congenital anomalies (defects prevailing since birth) were admitted at the MY Hospitals NICU and put on ventilator support . They were reportedly bitten by rats inside the intensive care facility of the hospitals pediatric surgery department in successive days. The two newborns died one after another on September 2 and September 3, but the MGM Medical College and MY Hospital top brass claimed that the deaths happened due to septicemia infections, which werent caused by rat bites. Meanwhile, the state-level probe panel formed to investigate the entire issue has reportedly found major lapses. According to informed sources, the probe has found that basic safety systems were not functioning adequately, and compulsory meetings of the Rodent Control Committee and the Infection Control Committee were not held for months together. In the wake of the probe, the MY Hospitals medical superintendent, Dr Ashok Yadav, has been sent on leave, while his charge has been assigned to Dr Basant Ningwal. Also, the probe has revealed that Dr Manoj Joshi (who was then officiating as the head of the pediatric surgery department) had failed to inform higher-ups or initiate immediate action, despite being fully aware of the entire incident. He has been suspended, while the pediatric surgery head of department, Dr Brajesh Lahoti, has been removed from his post.
