Delhi, grappling with severe pollution, has utilised only a fraction of the funds allocated under the National Clean Air Programme. Launched in 2019, the program aims to reduce PM10 pollution significantly by 2026. However, numerous cities, including Noida, Faridabad, and Visakhapatnam, have also shown low fund utilisation, raising concerns about the program's effectiveness.

Andhra govt targets Guinness record with International Yoga Day event in Visakhapatnam
VISAKHAPATNAM: The State government is gearing up for the 11th International Yoga Day, set to take place in Visakhapatnam on June 21, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the grand event. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed preparations, inspecting RK Beach Road, where five lakh people are expected to perform yoga simultaneously. Naidu examined the setup, reviewed logistics, and instructed officials on security, transportation, sanitation, and crowd management. Stressing meticulous execution, he also inspected the Andhra University College of Engineering grounds, identified as an alternative venue. Officials, including Special Chief Secretary (Medical and Health) MT Krishna Babu, who is also the nodal officer for the event, and Visakhapatnam District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad, presented a comprehensive blueprint. Later, Naidu held a high-level review meeting at the Novotel Hotel with ministers, officials, and allied organisations. At a press conference, Naidu revealed that Visakhapatnam was chosen as the primary venue at Modis suggestion, citing its suitability for a global event. He called the event Andhra Pradeshs biggest public gathering in recent years, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility. A Visakhapatnam Yoga Day Declaration will be released, highlighting state and central commitments to yoga promotion. The government is aiming for a Guinness World Record, with 5 lakh participants performing yoga at RK Beach in 22 categories. Special compartments are being arranged from RK Beach to Bhogapuram for systematic crowd management, involving 607 urban secretariats. One toilet will be provided per 100 participants, and every bus will have two drivers for safety. Weve arranged yoga mats for 3.5 lakh people and will distribute 5 lakh T-shirts, Naidu stated. The month-long campaign, Yogandhra , is raising awareness across Andhra Pradesh, with yoga sessions planned at 1 lakh locations involving 2 crore participants. Over 2.17 crore people have registered, and 25 lakh participation certificates will be issued. The government is seeking recognition from the World Book of Records, and yoga demonstrations will take place aboard 11 Indian Navy ships. A full-scale mock session will be held on June 20. Naidu emphasised a long-term vision, advocating yoga as a daily habit rather than a formality, beginning from Class IX with trained instructors and medical support in schools. He recalled Visakhapatnams resilience during Cyclone Hudhud and praised residents discipline. Visakhapatnam is my favourite city. The people here are cooperative and committed to good causes. Even during crises like Hudhud and Deepavali, they acted with responsibility, he said, asserting that the event would not be a one-time showcase but part of a larger movement promoting wellness. Calling yoga an integral part of Indias heritage, Naidu stressed its benefits for physical and mental health, reducing dependency on medication. He highlighted the events inclusive nature, transcending political, religious, and social divisions, and urged public representatives to actively participate. This should become a peoples movement, where everyone feels ownership, he said. Naidu also announced that the Gates Foundation has extended support to Andhra Pradeshs health sector. A pilot project is underway in Kuppam and will expand to Chittoor within six months, with a statewide rollout planned in two years.
Highlight governments achievements: CM Chandrababu Naidu
VISAKHAPATNAM: Chief Minister and TDP supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu urged party workers to actively communicate the achievements of the coalition government during the past year, stating that the development and welfare programmes undertaken must reach every household. Addressing a review meeting with party workers from the erstwhile Visakhapatnam district on Monday, Naidu stressed the importance of grassroots mobilisation and participation in governance. He acknowledged past shortcomings in party communication and engagement, noting, There were times when party workers felt neglected. We will ensure that such a disconnect doesnt happen again. Naidu noted that the government had launched 750 welfare and development programmes in the first year and emphasised the role of workers in taking these efforts to the public. No other State has implemented welfare on this scale, he said. On employment and welfare, he said recruitment for over 16,000 teaching posts under Mega DSC was underway, and that three LPG cylinders a year were being provided under Deepam-2. The Annadata Sukhibhava scheme, offering financial support to farmers, would begin from June 20. Additionally, from August 15, women would be allowed free travel in RTC buses, he announced. Reiterating his governments vision for Visakhapatnam, Naidu said the city had the potential to become a hub comparable to Mumbai. He announced that the Bhogapuram airport project would be expedited, and a Civil Aviation University would be established in the city. Plans are also in motion for a Metro Rail project, data analytics centres, and IT investments from firms like TCS and Google. A submarine cable from Singapore is also planned to improve connectivity, while the ArcelorMittal steel plant in the Anakapalle district is expected to commence construction soon. Visakhapatnam is already the city with the highest per capita income in the state, and we intend to build on that, he said. Naidu criticised the previous YSRCP government, alleging mismanagement and mortgaging of public assets, including government offices and revenue from liquor sales. They even spent income due for the next two years, he claimed. He stated that the TDP-led government had worked to protect public sentiment on issues like the VSP and South Coast Railway Zone. Whenever the steel plant faced privatisation threats, we intervened, he stated. Targeting YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Naidu accused him of resorting to street politics and described his public appearances as dramas. He said several land irregularities had come to light during the previous regime and promised probe into these complaints. Naidu added that a special programme would soon be launched to provide financial support and empowerment to the cadre.

England Tests Great Chance For Young Indian Team To Settle And Challenge Any Side: Venkatapathy Raju
World Test Championship: Former India left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju stated that the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting in Leeds on June 20, present a valuable chance for a young Indian team to find their footing and then confidently compete against any team in the world. With stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli moving on from Tests, it means the inexperienced Indian batting unit is set up for a daunting challenge in England, which also kickstarts their 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. In terms of the current squad, only KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja have hit Test centuries in England. That's what people are always saying - that you always should take advantage of your home conditions. But then if you see, there have been a lot of upsets this time like, India losing to New Zealand. Nobody expected that (would happen) in India. So, like that, anything can change at any time. This is a very young team Indian team with good balance. If you see the England team, even their bowling attack is also relatively very new. You don't have those experienced fast bowlers after James Anderson retired and then a couple of players getting injured. So, I think we got a couple of experienced batters in the Indian team who can handle that bowling and it's going to be very evenly matched. So far, England have never come into the finals of the World Test Championship and they are also willing to win more games. Five Test matches is quite a long time, but it gives a very good opportunity for this young Indian team to settle down into a team where they can challenge any team in the world and then try to make it to the next version of the World Test Championship, Raju told IANS in an exclusive interaction organised by Sony Sports Network on Sunday. With Yashasvi Jaiswal, B Sai Sudharsan, and Dhruv Jurel coming on their first tour of England while someone like Karun Nair is making a comeback to the Test team and skipper Shubman Gill is yet to prove himself as a dependable batter in overseas conditions, India have their task cut out to ensure the transition era is managed well. We should give enough time for a team to settle down, right? We were all so used to seeing all the senior players like Rohit, Virat or Ashwin - guys who have served India for more than 15 years. Naturally, any team will miss players with so much experience. But then, the other players now get a chance. We all dream about playing for the country and all these guys. You ask anyone, they always want to play Test cricket, right? Test cricket is the ultimate cricket. So, it's up to somebody like Sai Sudharsan, if he gets an opportunity, to just establish himself, because talent-wise, people are already talking so high about Sai Sudharsan. Then you have got Karun Nair - he scored a 300, but then lost out his way and now did very well in domestic cricket. So, we should appreciate and congratulate the selection committee for showing faith in him, and for him on performing well in domestic cricket to make a comeback. So, that way, I think the competition in the team itself looks very healthy. It's up to them just to go and utilize this opportunity and become good Test cricketers, added Raju. He also seemed pleased with a very good combination of youth and experience in the bowling line-up. You have got Jasprit, Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been quite successful in England on the last tour. So, he (Thakur) fits in as an all-rounder. Then you have got Nitish Reddy who also can become a good all-rounder because he has shown what he is capable of batting. But bowling, he has to take a little more workload. Then you have got somebody like Arshdeep, which means the variety is there in our bowling, added Raju. He further believes England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir can turn out to be a surprise package who can trouble the Indian batters. Bashir picked career-best figures of 6-81 in the second innings, which took his match haul to nine wickets, as England thrashed Zimbabwe by an innings and 45 runs in the one-off Test at Trent Bridge. Bashir, who made his Test debut against India at Visakhapatnam last year, has now taken four five-wicket hauls in 16 matches, with his overall wickets tally at 58. India have not been tested by any (England Lions) spinner in those four-day games they have played so far. Then, in that context, Bashir's height and his consistency has been so good. He knows the conditions so well. He has been a genuine match-winner for England when it comes to spin-bowling because there are no other spinners in that particular England team who can trouble other batters. But then, he has been showing that consistency. The best part about him is the control that he has - the field placements have been brilliant, and then, he gets that extra bounce and that nagging line like Nathan Lyon. So, I think he can be a surprise package for the England team, as Indian batters have been quite vulnerable when playing against good quality spin-bowling nowadays. They (Indian batters) hardly play domestic cricket, and it is not played on turners because of the restrictions or play more on green tops in India. So England players might struggle against Kuldeep and Ravindra Jadeja. But we should not forget about Bashir, as he can be a surprise element for the England team against India, concluded Raju. JAC demands PM Modis assurance against Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatisation
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam District Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Workers and Peoples Organisations has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Visakhapatnam on June 21 to take part in International Yoga Day, officially announce the withdrawal of the proposed privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). They have also sought immediate reinstatement of 4,000 contract workers, who were unjustly terminated, and urged the TDP-led NDA government to lift the police restrictions imposed on the ongoing hunger strike camp at Kurmannapalem Junction. These demands were raised at a roundtable meeting of the JAC held at the CITU office on Saturday. JAC chairman M Jaggunaidu and vice-chairmen M Manmadha Rao, B Nagabhushanam and N Kanaka Rao addressed the gathering. The leaders pointed out that workers have been relentlessly protesting for over four-and-a-half years to protect the steel plant through a relay hunger strike at Kurmannapalem Junction. Political leaders across party lines, including the present Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao, have participated in the strike in the past, they said. However, when the Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee attempted to rebuild the dilapidated protest camp, the coalition government sent police to prevent it, threatening to file cases against permanent and contract workers who sit in fast. Police presence continues at the site, which the JAC condemned as a violation of democratic rights. The JAC criticised the TDP-JSP-BJP coalition for acting against democratic rights after assuming power, despite having championed those rights while in opposition. They demanded that the government allow peaceful protests without obstruction. JAC leaders also questioned the governments claim that the steel plant is overstaffed, which they said was used to justify the termination of 4,000 contract workers, many of whom had been working for nearly three decades. Despite this, new hires are being made, which the JAC said exposes the falsehood of the excess workers argument. They alleged that rights won by workers over the years are being diluted, and under the pretext of TMC contracts, large private companies are being brought in, recruiting workers from other States, a move they said is part of a deliberate plan to privatise the steel plant. The JAC demanded that the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Visakhapatnam MP, and Gajuwaka MLA take immediate steps to revoke the dismissal and reinstate all 4,000 contract workers. They also noted that despite coalition leaders claiming the plants sale has been halted, the Union Government has not officially announced this, and steps toward privatisation are still going on. To press their demands, the JAC has announced a special protest campaign from June 16 to 21, targeting highways, industrial gates, and workplaces across the district. They urged workers and the public to actively participate and make the campaign a success. The roundtable meeting was attended by RKSV Kumar, district CITU secretary, SK Rehman, AITUC leader, K Deva Sahayam, district AIFTU secretary, B Padma, district AIDWA president, and others.

Duleep Trophy Goes Back To Zonal Format, Indias Schedule Announced For White-ball Series Against NZ
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: After a meeting on Saturday, the Apex Council of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the 2025/26 domestic will begin with the Duleep Trophy on August 28 and conclude with the Senior Womens Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy on April 3, 2026. As per changes announced by the Apex Council, the Duleep Trophy and Senior Womens Challenger tournaments will now be contested between six zonal teams selected by zonal selectors. The format is a departure from the last time when the national selection committee picked the squads, and for the upcoming season, teams will be picked by the Zonal Selection Committee as per the previous tradition. The Apex Council also said the Plate Group restructuring has been introduced across age categories. As per this, the bottom 6 teams (based on the previous seasons rankings) will be placed in the plate group for limited-overs tournaments, adding that only one team will be promoted/relegated between Elite and Plate groups going forward. In the 2025/26 domestic schedule, the prestigious Ranji Trophy will continue to be held in two phases. The first phase of the tournament will begin on October 15 and run till November 19, while the second phase begins on January 22. Regarding the tournament updates, the Apex Council said the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Senior Womens T20 Trophy will now include a Super League stage instead of a traditional knockout. In this, each team will play three games in the league, following which the top team from Groups A and B will feature in the final. As far as new tournament grouping formats are concerned, major tournaments such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Senior Womens One Day Trophy, and Mens U23 State A Trophy will follow a four Elite Groups + one Plate Group model. On the other hand, most junior and womens tournaments (U16, U19, U23) have been moved to a five Elite + one Plate group structure. Meanwhile, the BCCI Apex Council has also approved the venues for Indias upcoming white-ball home series against New Zealand, scheduled to be held in early 2026. Vadodara, Rajkot, and Indore will host ODIs on January 11, 14 and 18, respectively. Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram are the hosts for the five T20Is to be held from January 21 to 31. Take NDA government achievements to people from June 23: CM Chandrababu Naidu
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister and TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu has directed the party rank and file to actively participate in the month-long door-to-door campaign from June 23 to explain the development programmes and welfare schemes implemented by the coalition government in its first year rule as part of the First Step in Good Governance initiative. We have fulfilled our promise by implementing the Talliki Vandanam scheme. We made it clear that the scheme will be implemented without any cap on the number of school going children in a family. We have delivered that promise, the TDP supremo said. Though we planned to organise the First Step in Good Governance programme with MLAs, MPs, and officials on June 12, it was cancelled due to the plane crash in Ahmedabad, he said. Holding a teleconference with TDP MLAs, MPs, leaders and activists on Friday, Naidu asserted that from leaders to grassroots workers should participate in the campaign highlighting the achievements of NDA government. Besides highlighting our first-year achievements, we should counter false propaganda of opposition. Unable to digest our success, the opposition has resorted to attacks and insulted women, Naidu said. Suggesting the cadre not to be complacent just because of the success of Mahanadu, he ordered the constitution of party organisational committees to provide opportunities to the hardworking activists. Opinions of all should be considered while constituting the TDP committees, he said. Making it clear that posts will be given to only those functioning as Kutumba Sadhikara Saradhi, he said the party activists should always be dynamic. Announcing that training camps will be organised for activists, and leaders from July, Naidu asserted that activists will be elevated as leaders. Recalling that activists sweated it out when the party was not in power, he directed the MLAs to dedicate some time to party activities on a regular basis, and mingle with people. Recalling that party cadre and leaders promoted Super Six, the NDA manifesto, and Babu Surety - Bhavishyathuku Guarantee before the elections, the Chief Minister said the coalition government is now implementing all of them. Despite financial constraints, key schemes are being implemented within the first year. The previous government pushed the State into a debt trap with reckless borrowings. We have released Rs 10,000 crore for the Talliki Vandanam scheme benefiting 67.27 lakh students. Each mother receives Rs 13,000 for every school going child, and Rs 2,000 has been earmarked for school development. We said the scheme would be implemented before the reopening of schools, and we have done it, Naidu said. He explained that the beneficiaries include 18,55,760 mothers with one child, 14,55,322 with two children, 2,10,684 with three children and 20,053 with four children. While the previous government extended this benefit to only 42 lakh children, our government is covering 25 lakh more. Similarly, while Rs 5,540 crore was spent by the previous government, we are spending Rs 8,747 crore on it per annum, which is Rs 3,205 crore more, he highlighted. Parents have expressed happiness over the release of Talliki Vandanam funds. This is historic. Such a massive amount has never been released for a single scheme at once earlier, he said. Despite such efforts, some people are still criticising the NDA government. We are implementing the Talliki Vandanam scheme in a better way without changing any guidelines, he asserted. Under NTR Bharosa, we are providing pensions worth Rs 34,000 crore annually. Through Anna Canteens, four crore meals have been served. For farmers welfare, we are launching the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme on June 20, as promised in our election manifesto. Thus, we are implementing two important schemes of Super Six in the same month, the Chief Minister said. Mentioning that the government is promoting initiatives like yoga, while implementing welfare and development schemes, Naidu said Yogandhra programme is being organised across the State in a big way. International Yoga Day will be observed in Visakhapatnam with a record participation of five lakh people. The goal is to involve two crore people across the State. Already, 2.21 crore people have been registered. Participants who join yoga for three days will receive a certificate. Yoga must become a part of life. This movement aims to build a healthy, wealthy, and happy society. This is a collective movement to place Andhra Pradesh on the global map, the Chief Minister highlighted, adding that preparatory events for Yoga Day will be held at one lakh locations tomorrow.

While hospital authorities declined to share detailed information, they confirmed that the woman, who had a small hole in her heart, underwent surgery that lasted over three hours. She has since been shifted to the ICU, where she remains on ventilator support under strict medical supervision. The last open-heart surgeries at MKCG MCH were performed in 1990 by then surgeons Dr Suresh Mishra and Dr Sachi Mishra. Since then, no open-heart procedures had been conducted in the hospital despite the availability of necessary equipment. The primary hurdle was the absence of a trained perfusionist, a specialist essential to operate the heart-lung machine during such surgeries. The long-standing issue was finally addressed after the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) deputed a perfusionist from SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack to MKCG MCH. The perfusionist joined two weeks back, allowing the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department to become fully operational. The CTVS department, located on the fifth floor of the multi-specialty PMSSY block, was established about five years back with modern facilities and advanced machinery, including a state-of-the-art heart-lung machine. Being the referral hospital for southern districts, MKCG MCH has long received patients with cardiac ailments. However, many of the patients had to be referred to hospitals in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, or Visakhapatnam for complex procedures. We had the infrastructure, but lacked expert handling of the machinery. With the perfusionist now available, the problem has been resolved, said Dr Sarada Prasanna Sahu, associate professor and head of the CTVS department. In recent months, the department has already performed two critical thoracic surgeries, one to remove a knife lodged in a mans chest, and another to extract an arrow that had pierced dangerously close to the heart. With open-heart surgery services now restored, four more patients have already been shortlisted for upcoming procedures in the MCH.
Vizag sewerage project cost revised to Rs 452 crore
VIJAYAWADA: The State government has issued a revised administrative sanction of Rs 452.46 crore to the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVSCCL) for the implementation of an integrated sewage collection and conveyance system, along with a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), in Pendurthi of Visakhapatnam district. The project includes Recycled Sewage Gravity Flow (RSGF), Tertiary Treatment, and comprehensive Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services for 15 years. Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Urban Development) S Suresh Kumar said the initiative marks a critical step in enhancing urban sanitation infrastructure and promoting the sustainable reuse of treated wastewater in the rapidly growing city. Taken up jointly by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and GVSCCL, the project aims to establish an underground drainage network for around 12,000 houses, ensuring the safe collection, treatment and disposal of sewage. Initially awarded to Tata Projects Ltd in 2018 with a stipulated completion period of 2 years and 5 months, the original deadline of April 23, 2021, was extended due to various unforeseen delays. The latest extension of time (EoT) now allows project completion by July 31, 2025, with work nearing completion. Several technical changes became necessary during execution, such as constructing a fourth aeration tank at Narava STP, enhancing the flash mixer feed sump capacity, and undertaking dust-filling works along the BRTS road, and Chinthala Agraharam. The original project cost was Rs 412 crore. However, due to rising input costs, interest during construction, and an increase in GST from 12% to 18%, the project saw a cost overrun. GVSCCL requested an additional Rs 40.46 crore, which the government approved, including a supplementary contribution from the GVMC. It ensures the timely delivery of this vital infrastructure project.
