BJP begins search for new Bihar president after Jaiswal joins cabinet
PATNA: The search for a new Bihar BJP president has begun after the induction of incumbent Dilip Kumar Jaiswal into the Nitish Kumar cabinet as a minister. Jaiswal, a member of the legislative council, will have to step down as party chief under the one person, one post policy. Sources within the BJP said senior leaders have already begun discussions on a new state president after Jaiswal was made a minister from the BJP quota. A senior leader, who camped in Bihar throughout the election, has been reportedly tasked to select the names of probable candidates for the post. Three names will be selected and sent to the central leadership, a senior BJP leader said. Janak Ram, a former minister, is among the Dalit leaders whose name is doing the rounds for the state presidents post. Ram, a turncoat, is now a prominent Dalit face of BJP in Bihar. Before joining BJP in 2013, he was associated with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Ram also served as a minister in the previous NDA government and also served as an MP from Gopalganj. He might be considered for the state presidents post as Dalits constitute nearly 20 per cent of the states population. Sanjiv Chaurasia is another leader who may be considered for the post. He comes from Extremely Backward Classes (EBC), which constitute nearly 36 per cent of the states population. Son of former governor of Sikkim Ganga Prasad, Chaurasia has won election from Digha for the third time and had been associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) from the very beginning. He was also made state president and national general secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and also served as state vice president and general secretary of BJP. Mithilesh Tiwari, who unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Buxar, is also a strong contender for the state presidents post among the Upper Caste leaders. He has vast experience of working with the organisation in different capacities and enjoyed the support of RSS. Nitish Mishra, former minister and MLA from Jhanjharpur, and Vivek Thakur, MP from Nawada, are among the other front runners for the post among Upper Caste leaders. Mishras tenure as industries minister in the previous NDA government was remarkable. Vivek Thakur is the son of veteran BJP leader Dr. C. P. Thakur, a former union minister. The new state president is likely to be appointed in the new year. Meanwhile, leaders are actively manoeuvring through the political corridors, each eyeing the coveted position.

South African Centurion Senuran Muthusamy Celebrates 'Awesome' Test Journey
South Africa's Senuran Muthusamy on Sunday said he overcame doubts about his career after a forgettable first taste of Test cricket in India to come back and register his maiden century. Muthusamy made 109 in South Africa's imposing 489 all out on day two of the second Test in Guwahati to frustrate the Indian attack with his grit and patience. A left-hander who bowls spin, Muthusamy missed the team's opening win but returned for the final Test -- his eighth -- to make an instant impact batting at number seven. The 31-year-old put on a key eighth-wicket stand of 97 with Marco Jansen and reached his hundred in 192 balls for life to come full circle in a country where he can trace his roots back several generations to the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. My journey's been unique, Muthusamy told reporters. (I) Got a taste of international cricket in 2019 in India, debuted here, went back into the wilderness a little bit. There were times, especially after 2019, where I wasn't sure if I'd ever play Test cricket again and certainly not in India after we lost that series. I've got a really cool group around me, so I'm very grateful for their support and their love. Yeah, it's an awesome journey, he said. Muthusamy fared well enough with the bat in his debut at Visakhapatnam in 2019, unbeaten in both innings for 33 and 49. But he made just nine and seven in the following Test in Pune. With the ball he claimed just two wickets in two heavy defeats and slipped out of favour. He played a Test each in 2023 and 2024 but returned with force this year and claimed 11 wickets and scored 106 runs to be named player of the series in South Africa's recent 1-1 draw in Pakistan. It's tough being a spinning all-rounder in South Africa, Muthusamy said. Conditions are a lot different (in South Africa) to the sub-continent. But when we get an opportunity to come to the sub-continent... it's an awesome challenge that we look forward to. I see myself as an all-rounder so I try to contribute where I can towards the team's cause. I just try to add as much value as I can. Temba Bavuma's South Africa are chasing their first Test series win in India since Hansie Cronje's team triumphed in 2000. The pitch in Guwahati still looks to be full of runs and despite a good first innings total the South African spin attack of Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj and Muthusamy face a tough challenge dislodging the Indian batters. I think Simon's got over a thousand first class wickets, Kesh has over 200 international wickets, said Muthusamy. Also Read: Live Cricket Score So there's a vast amount of experience and I look forward to seeing how things unfold.

Rebels blame Bihar Congress leaders for poll debacle
PATNA: Internal conflict within the Bihar Congress unit has escalated after all the 43 leaders, who were served with show-cause notices by the disciplinary committee last week for their anti-party activities, submitted their responses, dismissing the charges. The group, described as rebels, accused the state leadership of acting arbitrarily and ignoring organisational procedures. The members of the group held discussions among themselves ahead of sending their responses to the notices. Hitting out at the state leadership, the rebels said notices were served on them without a disciplinary inquiry and clearance from national leadership. As per rules, central leaderships approval is mandatory in such cases, they said. Accusing state president Rajesh Kumar of running the organisation through unilateral decisions and sidelining internal dialogue, the rebels said he did not pay heed to complaints made from workers at district and block levels. They alleged that lack of dialogue among workers has weakened the partys structure at grassroots, which reflected in the assembly polls. The state leaders are puppets in the hands of RSS-BJP, they claimed. The leaders said any harsh action against them would further cause loss to the party after the poll debacle. The central leadership should focus on resolving issues within party, they said. When contacted, a senior Congress leader said the rebels responses were under review of the disciplinary committee. Further action will be taken on the basis of the committees report, he said. The leader who did not wish to be named said that the central leadership would be apprised of the recommendation of the disciplinary committee. The party functions under certain rules and they will be followed in this case as well, he said. Meanwhile, rebel leaders seem not in a mood to relent. They said that they would discuss future course of action at their next meeting if their voices were suppressed further. We have raised issues in the interest of the organisation, they claimed. Action after disciplinary committee report: Leader A senior Congress leader stated that the rebels responses were under review of the disciplinary committee. Further action will be taken on the basis of the committees report, he said. The leader, who did not wish to be named, said that the central leadership would be apprised of the recommendation of the disciplinary committee.

Agarkar & Co. Slated To Meet In Mumbai To Select Indias Squads For White-ball Games Against SA
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia: The senior mens selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to convene in Mumbai on Sunday to select Indias squads for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa, said sources to IANS. Agarkar, along with RP Singh and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, were in Guwahati on Saturday to attend day one of the second Test against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. But IANS understands that the trio left for Mumbai from Guwahati on Sunday for the selection committee meeting at the BCCI headquarters. Yes, the selection meeting is today in Mumbai, after being initially presumed that it would happen in Guwahati. It is understood that other members are also travelling to Mumbai for it, further said the sources. Following the conclusion of the two-match Test series, India will play against South Africa in three ODIs, to be played in Ranchi, Raipur and Visakhapatnam and five T20Is set to take place in Cuttack, New Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Lucknow and Ahmedabad. The discussion in the Agarkar-led panel is expected to centre a lot on who could lead the side for the ODI series against the Proteas. Theres a leadership vacuum in the 50-over set-up as captain Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are unavailable due to neck and spleen injuries. With Gill also consulting Mumbai-based spinal surgeon Dr Abhay Nene for his neck injury recovery, it also puts him as a doubtful starter for the T20Is against South Africa, starting on December 9. IANS understands that theres a leadership toss-up between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, with more discussions expected to happen in the selection committees meeting. Rahul has led India previously in ODIs and was the captain when the side beat South Africa in the 50-over series in 2023. Pant, on the other hand, is captaining India in the ongoing second Test in Guwahati, but hasnt been a first-choice starter in the 50-over set-up due to Rahuls presence. In Gills absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal could partner with Rohit Sharma at the top. IANS understands that theres a leadership toss-up between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, with more discussions expected to happen in the selection committees meeting. Rahul has led India previously in ODIs and was the captain when the side beat South Africa in the 50-over series in 2023. Karnataka educationists demand halt to school mergers; urge CM to review policy and fill vacancies
BENGALURU: Dalit Sangharsha Samiti and Jagruta Nagarikaru Karnataka Vedike organised a round table meeting of educationists, activists and retired professors on Saturday, to discuss recent decisions taken by the Department of School Education and Literacy. They announced the formation of a separate committee and submitted certain recommendations to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Shripadh Bhat, educationist, explained, One of our recommendations includes changing Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa. MLAs with deep insight and commitment to the public education system should be appointed ministers. The recommendations of the State Education Policy (SEP) formulated by the Karnataka State Education Policy Commission should be made public and reviewed. Steps should be taken to fill all vacant posts, from pre-primary to pre-university education, as soon as possible. No new order should be issued regarding education policies until the SEP is implemented. No schools should be merged with Karnataka Public Schools etc. Meanwhile, Dr Niranjanaradhya, education expert, said, Karnataka is in 7th position in India in terms of shutting down schools. The state has closed 6.46 per cent of government schools during various party regimes. If the government closes more than 25,600 schools, it will touch 52 per cent. He highlighted some shocking figures on the status of schools. In 2010-11, there were 45,677 elementary schools in Karnataka. Now, there are 41,905 elementary schools. Enrolment rate of children in government schools in 2010-11 was 54.5 lakh, but has reduced to 23 lakh. However, the enrolment rate of children in private schools was 28.76lakh in 2010-11, which has now increased to 48.47lakh. Education is a political issue now. They have violated Article 21A by shutting down schools within one kilometre range in every village, depriving children of their Right to Education, Niranjanaradhya stated. Last week, TNIE reported that 19 government schools of various taluks of Chikkaballapur would be merged into one KPS, and seven schools in Channapatna would be merged to start another KPS. The documents also stated that TCs must be given to students, and benches, desks and other properties moved to the new school. Teachers will be also deputed to the new KPS.

AIMIM ready to support NDA govt in Bihar if Seemanchal treated justly, says Owaisi
PATNA: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that his party is ready to support the JD(U)-led NDA government in Bihar, provided that Seemanchal region is treated justly. Addressing a public meeting under Amour assembly constituency in Bihars Purnea district, Owaisi said that justice had not been done with Seemanchal region by previous governments. Accusing Nitish of focusing only on development of Patna and Rajgir (Nalanda), Owaisi said that the rest part of Bihar remained neglected during the NDA rule. Development should not be confined to Patna and Rajgir, he asserted. AIMIM won five seats in Muslim dominated Seemanchal region comprising Purnea, Kishanganj, Araria and Katihar in the recently concluded assembly elections. He said the region continued to suffer from river erosion, migration and corruption. The government must pay attention to these problems, the AIMIM chief said. Referring to AIMIMs plan for its newly elected MLAs, Owaisi said that he would monitor his partys MLAs and announced an accountability-driven plan. Our MLAs will sit in party offices in their respective constituencies twice a week to listen to peoples grievances, he said. To make it foolproof, the party chief said that the MLAs would have to send photographs of their interactions with people with their location via WhatsApp. It would show exactly where they are, he told the public. The new exercise is said to start within six months. Owaisi reiterated his resolve to visit the region once in every six months to remain in touch with people of the region. The 24 assembly constituencies in Seemanchal region has largely gone with NDA, with alliance winning 14 seats, AIMIM managed to retain five seats, it had won in 2020 assembly elections.

In a first, Nitish agrees to part away with home
PATNA: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday handed over the key home department to the BJP, ending his nearly 20-year control of the portfolio and signalling a shift in the states power balance. The move, finalised after long discussions within the NDA, puts Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary in charge of home, seen as a clear sign that the new government wants to put law and order at the top of its priorities. The transfer also comes amid criticism from within the NDA, especially from Union minister Chirag Paswan, whose LJP (RV) is now part of the coalition. Paswan had repeatedly flagged what he called the deteriorating law-and-order situation during the campaign. With Choudhary now helming home, the BJP faces heightened responsibility, particularly in the sensitive Seemanchal region, where the NDA had raised concerns over illegal infiltration throughout the election season. The JD(U) kept finance. Senior JD(U) leader Bijendra Prasad Yadav, now a nine-term MLA, will head the department. Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha has been given the portfolios of revenue and land reforms, along with mines and geology. Mangal Pandey will oversee health and law. Eighteen of the 26 ministers sworn in on Thursday received portfolios. The other departments, which have so far not been distributed, will remain with the chief minister, a senior official said. Dilip Jaiswal, who is also holding charge of state BJP president, takes charge of industriesan appointment seen as an indication that the government will push industrial growth to curb migration. Former industries minister Nitish Mishra did not find a place in the cabinet this time. Nitin Nabin will manage road construction and urban development, Ram Kripal Yadav agriculture, and Sanjay Tiger labour resources. Arun Shankar Prasad has been entrusted with tourism, art, culture and youth affairs. And Lakhendra Kumar Raushan will look after the SCs and STs department.
