Shillong rapper-singer Reble on roots, rebellion, and the art of keeping it raw

Music is personal, intimate. Could you elaborate on your connection to it, and how it has shaped your journey? Who were your heroes growing up? Ever since I was little I cant even remember exactly when, maybe five or six I was drawn to sounds. Music was always around me: rock, hip-hop, indie. But it was only around 10 or 12 that I began writing and rapping. I didnt have much then, didnt quite fit in, and music became that outlet. It was where I could say things I couldnt otherwise say. That shaped everything because my earliest work was about survival, identity, speaking my truth. My heroes are the ones who kept it raw. Eminem, Andr 3000, The Notorious B.I.G. They taught me that struggle doesnt have to be pretty to be powerful. And bands like Linkin Park and Red Hot Chili Peppers showed me you could break form mix emotion and chaos and still make it sing. Why Reble? Reble comes from rebellion. Ive always hated being told what to do or how to be. I needed something that felt like mine a name that could push back. Over time, it became more than just a tag. Its that part of me thats bolder, louder, more honest. Reble can say things Daya my real self might hesitate to. Its not just an artist name; its a force, a strength, a whole mood. How different are Daiaphi Lamare and Reble? Is this alter ego inspired by artists like Eminem? Theres definitely a difference, but its not a mask. Daiaphi is me my everyday life, my insecurities, the quiet bits. Reble is a version of me amplified, sharpened. When I step on stage or into the booth, that side takes over the one that isnt scared to be angry, emotional, defiant. Alter egos let you explore parts of yourself that would otherwise stay hidden. And yes, watching people like Eminem made me realise that sometimes another voice inside you says what you cant say out loud. You connected with music as a means to belong. Now that your music has taken you places, where do you feel you belong? Does Shillong still pull you in? Shillong always pulls me in. Its complicated, in a good way. Its home, it made me hungry, but it also made me dream beyond it. When you grow up somewhere that doesnt hand you opportunities, you learn to build your own. That fire still comes from Shillong. The North East is full of sonic gems, yet rarely gets the national spotlight. Why do you think we remain saturated with Bollywood or Punjabi-pop sounds? Its partly about infrastructure and visibility. Were still developing as a state, and it takes time. The biggest thing is homegrown support people from Meghalaya need to back their own talent, create a scene that feels sustainable. A lot of artists dont get access to good studios, engineers, platforms, or funding. That limits reach. What could change it? More festivals, more indie labels investing in regional artists, better media coverage, and cross-regional collaborations. The moment the rest of India starts listening with curiosity not just to whats familiar thats when the change begins. Does success now come with the baggage of representation being from the North East, being a woman? I dont see it as baggage. I think representation should happen naturally. I never sit down thinking, I have to represent someone. I just want to make good music. If the art is true, it already speaks for who you are. Thats enough. Whats your creative process like do you have a structure or flow with instinct? Its a mix of both. Im not the kind of artist who wakes up at a fixed time to write bars. I go by instinct. I might hear a beat, feel something, and then sit down to build work on the flow, rhyme schemes, the emotion of it. For hooks, I often freestyle or jam until something sticks. Recording is another story; what sounds good in your head doesnt always hit the same on mic, so I keep refining. Im big on polishing. My art is really a reflection of what Im feeling at that moment. Youve collaborated widely, including on a Malayalam film. Tell us about that experience. Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra was my first film score, and it was amazing. Jakes Bejoy was great to work with he gave me the space to understand the character and relate to her struggle. That freedom meant everything. Id love to do more of that a mix of film work that stretches me, and independent stuff that stays close to my roots. I dont want to be boxed in. How does performing live change your relationship with your songs? Live shows are where I feel most alive. That moment when someone in the crowd locks eyes with you and you can tell they get it thats everything. Songs grow with you. How I perform a track might change as I do, but the core emotion stays the same. Your songs sit within hip-hop but draw from rock and indie too. Do you still identify mainly as a hip-hop artist? Hip-hop is home, but I dont like being limited to a box. I grew up on RHCP, Linkin Park, Pink Floyd, MGMT all that shaped how I think about sound. I love the energy and honesty of hip-hop, but I also love melody, atmosphere, storytelling. If it moves me, its fair game. How do you see Indias indie scene right now? Theres momentum. More people are open to listening, more platforms are available. But the scene is still uneven. Artists from the margins from the Northeast, women, anyone not in the mainstream aesthetic often get left out. Theres a lot of hype, but not always structural support. Id like to see that change: originality getting its due, not just whatever fits a brand moodboard. The streaming era demands constant output. Do you feel pressured by that pace? No, not really. The only thing I ever worry about is dying before I make my best work. The rest numbers, algorithms, all that doesnt get to me. Ill make what I want to make, and I trust that itll find its place. You studied civil engineering not the usual path to rap. How did you manage both worlds? Discipline. I graduated with a First Class Distinction from VTU. Ive always believed were more capable than we think. If something matters to you, you make space for it. Music was my escape, engineering was my structure. Both kept me grounded. And whats next for Reble? A new EP, maybe something bigger. I want to reach wider audiences in South Asia, do more live shows, and collaborate across cultures. I want to keep pushing boundaries but never lose the rawness that started all this. The plan is simple: make music that lasts.

Meet Reble, the Shillong rapper-singer who powered Lokah movie's title track

The buzz around Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra , one of Malayalam cinemas most ambitious recent releases, has brought a new name to the fore: Reble, a rapper-singer from Shillong. You can hear her powerful voice when she spits bars in the films pulsing title track, Thani Lokah Murakkaari , composed by Jakes Bejoy. For Reble, born Daiaphi Lamare, it was her first film score, a collaboration that placed her before new audiences across the country. But the road to this moment began much earlier, in the hills of Meghalaya, where music is a second language. In Shillong, music is everywhere, she says. I was maybe five or six when I started noticing sound. Rock, hip-hop, indie. It was always in the air. By 10, I was scribbling rhymes, rapping, trying to find a place for myself. I didnt have much or didnt really fit in. Music became my outlet. Reble Her heroes gave her a map, and she found herself a compass. Eminem, Andre 3000, The Notorious B.I.G. They showed me struggle doesnt have to be pretty to be powerful. Linkin Park and RHCP showed me you can blend genres and let emotion lead. Later, Pink Floyd and MGMT added new textures, she says. Her artist name reflects that defiance. Reble comes from rebellion. I always hated being told what to do. Daiaphi is vulnerable; Reble is amplified, defiant. The alter ego lets me explore darker parts without worrying how theyll be judged. Its not just a name; its a mood, a voice, a strength, she explains. Reble in action Like Eminems Slim Shady, the persona gave her licence to be blunt. Im not a people-pleaser. Reble allows me to say things Daiaphi would hesitate to. That honesty carried into her Lokah debut. It was my first film score. The crew let me understand the character, relate to her struggles, and still gave me the freedom to bring my own flavour. That balance felt good. Shed studied the brief closely, finding parallels with her own story. The characters pain wasnt alien to me. I didnt have to fake it. I knew what she was going through. The experience left her hungry for more film projects, though she insists her independent work will remain an anchor. I want both. The big projects that stretch me, and solo work that stays raw. Reble Though music has taken her across India, Shillong still pulls her. Its bittersweet. Theres the hunger of having little, the drive to dream bigger. Both fuel me, she says. But it also keeps her mindful of systemic hurdles for musicians in the Northeast. Many deserving artists dont get platforms. To change that, we need more festivals, independent labels investing in regional talent, more media coverage, and collaboration across regions. We need better studios, better engineers, better equipment. Without infrastructure, ambition alone cant take you far, she points out. When asked if she feels pressure to represent her region or her gender, she shakes her head. Representation comes naturally, not forced. I just want to make good music. Good art speaks for everything you are. As for gatekeepers, she says, I just do my thing. I always have to prove myself, so I did better, and that helped me. I dont waste time on people who think I cant. Reble Rebles process is part instinct, part discipline. Usually, I hear a beat, get a feeling, then I build. Sometimes I freestyle until something sticks. Recording is about refining for what sounds good in your head doesnt always land on the mic, she says. Performing live changes the music again. That moment when someone in the crowd gets it like they know exactly where youre coming from thats when I come alive. The performance changes as time moves, but the core message stays, she says. Shes blunt about the grind behind the stage. Its not glamorous. You stay up all night, write ten verses to keep one, fight with yourself about lines. And sometimes you still hate it. But when it clicks when the verse locks into the beat its magic, Reble says. Reble in action Discipline, it came early. A civil engineering graduate, she says, Ask anybody who knows me and theyll tell you I stuck to that motto. We humans are smarter and more capable than we think. That rigour now shapes her art, though perfectionism can sting. Many projects havent landed the way I wanted. Im a perfectionist, so it bugs me. But thats the life of an artist. Highs and lows. I just happen to like polishing it until it shines, she adds. Her music resists boxes. Hip-hop gave me my voice. But I also grew up on Pink Floyd, MGMT, RHCP my sound is all of that. I dont want to be locked into one lane. But when asked if the industry is receptive to that, she says it is very skewed. Indie music has momentum. But its uneven. Marginal voices get sidelined. What we need is originality, not just aesthetics, Reble says. Theres an emphasis on streaming and social media metrics, but it doesnt bother her. We should stick to making good music and adapt. The only thing I worry about is dying before I put out my best work. The rest doesnt bother me, Reble says. Ambition, though, is constant. I want to make the best music coming out of South Asia. A new EP, more collaborations, bigger stages. Still raw, still me, but cleaner, bigger. She says it without hesitation: I strongly believe I can express myself in a way that reaches the world. I am different.

The hills of Meghalaya leave a foodprint on Kochi coast

Poring over Shakespeare texts one evening, a young Ahmedaki Laloo realised that a career in English Literature was not her calling. Pondering then on what is, she arrived at something she hadnt yet paid much interest in food. When I look back, the happiest moments in my life were when I was cooking, Ahmedaki Laloo (Chef Ahme) tells TNIE on the sidelines of Meghalaya Table pop-up at Brunton Boatyard Heritage Hotel in Kochi. It was a gradual realisation. Food made me happy. It felt celebratory. She didnt give up on her English degree though, much to the relief of her parents who insisted that a career in food must have a backup. After trudging through the three-year course, Ahme hopped on a long flight to South India. Udupi, to be precise a quaint little town by the sea. Here, she joined Manipal University to learn more about the culinary world and her place in it. TNIE in conversation with Chef Ahme @ Armoury restobar However, to really belong came with its own set of challenges. In our first practical class, the task was to identify the ingredients. There were about 30. I only knew three, Ahme recalls with a smile. But then, it was no laughing matter. A sense of dread befell her, prompting Ahme to ring home for some reassurance that she had not once again made the wrong choice. But thanks to a legion of mentors, I grew into the routine, developed essential skills, and before long despite hailing from the hills (or perhaps because of it) took a deep liking to coastal food, Ahme says. An internship at a top tier hotel in Bengaluru followed. Here, she leaned once again on her fondness for seafood and worked at their restaurant that specialised in coastal cuisine. Thats when my life shifted. By then, food had indeed become my true love, she says. Chef Ahme Then, on one long journey back to Bengaluru after having visited Shillong, her hometown, it dawned on Ahme that though she has cultivated considerable skill in several cuisines, her own remained untapped, and there was much to learn from it. My ancestry traces its lineage to Khasi and Jainti hills in Meghalaya, and even Bengal. Its a blend of all three. Each boasts a distinct culinary practice and experience, and, of course, texture and taste, says Ahme. I leaned into that. I was committed to studying our indigenous food more thoroughly, and to show to all its richness, she adds. Her brand AOrigins became an outlet to achieve that. Through regular pop-ups, it bridges Meghalaya to the world by way of food. Chef Ahme takes a break after her shift at Brunton Boatyard Heritage Hotel Our aim isnt just to feed people, but to give them a glimpse into our culture, and thus preserve it, says Ahme. Indeed, the pop-up at Brunton Boatyard also features weaves from Shillong as table linen and runners, and bamboo baskets. Staff also don traditional accessories. Food is, and has always been, a soft power. Western influences currently dictate what goes on our dining tables. But I believe the northeast cuisine has much to be celebrated, she says. To build this bridge is not difficult in Kerala, points out Ahme. There are similarities between our cuisine and yours. Back home, rice is identity. It is the case here too. Then, tapioca, turmeric, cashews, bananas, even the pride in local produce. That shared energy makes it easier, she says. Chef Ahme in action. Background: History restaurant @ Brunton Boatyard Though the Meghala Table pop-up concludes this weekend, Ahme promises to be back. This is a place that keeps calling you back. The values, the hospitality, the richness of the land and sea. Theres so much to learn. This is my first pop-up here, but certainly not the last, she says. On her return to Shillong, she also hopes to take something back. My dream is to marry our food with coastal cuisine. The bridge, she says, goes both ways. Food, at the end of the day, is about sharing. Even if were from different parts of India, once we sit together to eat, bonds form. Language can be a barrier. But food never is. The Meghalaya Table pop-up concludes with lunch on September 27, 2025. To reserve a table, contact Brunton Boatyard at 7510432203.
