Maharaja Trophy: Shreyas Gopal Leads Mangaluru Dragons To 52-run Win Over Mysore Warriors
Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 League: Mangaluru Dragons skipper Shreyas Gopal delivered a comprehensive performance at the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20, guiding his side to a 52-run victory over Mysore Warriors. Macneil Noronha and Shivraj S. also contributed with the bat while Kranthi Kumar was the leading wicket-taker yet again with four wickets to ensure the Warriors were bowled out for 121 in pursuit of 174. In the second innings, Shreyas Gopal struck in the first over to dismiss Karthik S.U. (8 off 4) and jolted the Warriors early, but Karthik C.A. (34 off 21) responded fiercely, smashing two sixes and a four off Gopal in the third over. The Dragons fought back, as Ronit More removed Venkatesh M. and Kranthi Kumar claimed Harshil Dharmani, to end the powerplay at 51/3. Shreyas Gopals impact only grew from there as he snapped up Manish Pandey (12 off 7), who looked menacing after three fours, and Lankesh KS (11 off 12), to return figures of 3-36. Karthik C.A., who had soldiered on despite the flurry of wickets, was eventually bagged by Sachin Shinde to push the Warriors to 74/6 in 10 overs. Yashovardhan Parantap (28 off 20) and Sharath Srinivas (14 off 18) offered some resistance with a 30-run stand until Kranthi Kumar castled Parantap in the 15th over. Kumar then took care of K. Gowtham (0 off 2) in the same over and also picked up Sharath Srinivas in the 17th to effectively close the contest. Macneil Noronha picked the final wicket of Shikhar Shetty (7 off 7) to bundle the Warriors out for 121. After a fiery opening spell for Prasidh Krishna that only conceded 10 runs in his first two overs, Sharath B.R. (25 off 16) attacked spinner Shikhar Shetty for two sixes and a four to help the Dragons finish the powerplay at 53/0. Kushaal Wadhwani and Yashovardhan Parantap halted the Dragons, taking four wickets in as many overs. Wadhwani removed Sharath B.R. and Aneesh K.V. (6 off 6), while Parantap dismissed Lochan Gowda (34 off 31) and Aadarsh Prajwal (5 off 4), leaving the Dragons struggling at 76/4 at the 10-over mark. According to RPF, the first case was reported on August 10 when a passenger on the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangaluru Malabar Express was attacked and robbed near Aluva. Six persons were arrested within 18 hours, and the stolen items were recovered. The second case occurred on August 11 on the Netravati Express near Aluva, where a passengers phone was snatched from outside the train. A minor was arrested the same day, and two others, along with a shop owner, were later held, leading to the recovery of five stolen phones, including an iPhone 14 Pro. The third case was reported on August 16 from the Secunderabad-Thiruvananthapuram Sabari Express near Ernakulam. Three persons were arrested, and the stolen phone was recovered, officials said. Senior Divisional Security Commissioner (RPF), Muhammed Haneef, said the quick detection of the cases showed the strong coordination between RPF and GRP.

Building owners arrested for violating safety norms in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: Halasuru Gate police arrested two building owners in connection with the death of five people, including a couple and their two children, in Saturdays fire mishap. The owners had allegedly constructing a four-storey building unscientifically, in violation of fire and other safety norms. The accused are Balakrishnayya Shetty and Sandeep Shetty, both friends and natives of Mangaluru. The fire broke out in a building located on Rajanna Lane, Nagarathpet, around 3am Saturday. At least 12 people managed to escape, while Madan Kumar Purohit and Suresh Kumar were found charred to death on the ground and second floors of the building. Madans wife Sangeeta Kanwar, and their two children Mitesh and Vihan, were trapped on the third floor as Madan had locked the house from outside. After nearly 12 hours of operation, Fire and Emergency Services personnel and State Disaster Response Force recovered the three bodies. Police said the two owners were arrested on Saturday night, based on a complaint filed against the duo by Madans elder brother. During the probe, it was revealed that the owners had obtained permission only for a G+2 structure, but had built two more floors illegally. They had also violated fire safety norms and failed to obtain mandatory certificates from BBMP and Bescom. Forensic Science Laboratory and Bescom teams visited the spot on Sunday and collected evidence. Further action will be taken after receiving reports from the Fire and other departments. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short-circuit, police said, adding that the duo is remanded in judicial custody. They were booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and other sections of the BNS.
Independence Day rush spurs rise in rail footfall; calls grow for special trains for Onam
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Major railway stations across the Thiruvananthapuram Division recorded close to a 20% spike in passenger footfall during the Independence Day weekend. The rush, which began on Thursday evening, was managed effectively with the operation of special trains and the addition of extra coaches, said senior railway officials. Sources said the passenger footfall is projected to rise by over 40% between September 4 and 7. With this in mind, passengers have urged the Southern Railway to consider deploying additional Vande Bharat Express services for the festive season.

Daily train service from Kerala to Velankanni to be a reality soon
KASARGOD: The possibility of a daily train service to Velankanni from Kerala would soon become a reality. MPs from Kerala have been constantly demanding daily train connectivity to Velankanni considering the huge population of Christians going on pilgrimage from the state to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the important pilgrimage centres of Christians, especially Catholic denominations, of Kerala and Karnataka. However, the shrine is poorly connected by Railways despite having a railway station in the town. Mavelikkara MP Kodikunnil Suresh, who has been communicating with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regularly on the matter, recently received a positive response from the latter. In a letter dated August 7, 2025, the railway minister assured the MP that the concerned directorate has been asked to examine the possibilities of operating train no. 16361/16362 Ernakulam-Velankanni-Ernakulam Express on daily basis. Following which, the MPs office is optimistic that the daily train to Velankanni would materialise soon. The annual festival of the shrine is held every year on September 8, the birthday of Mother Mary. Thousands take out a pilgrimage to Velankanni starting from the last week of August. From Kerala, the shrine can be reached by rail through train no. 16361 Ernakulam Junction-Velankanni Bi-weekly Express starting from Ernakulam at 1pm on Mondays and Saturdays to reach Velankanni at 5.40am the next day. In return direction, train no. 16362 Velankanni-Ernakulam Bi-weekly Express that leaves Velankanni at 6.40pm on Sundays and Tuesdays to reach Ernakulam at 11.40am the next day. Apart from this, there is only one weekly train from Vasco da Gama (Goa) to Velankanni that runs via Hubbali and Salem. Most travellers have to take connecting train or vehicles to reach Velankanni. David Christy DSouza from Manjeshwar, who went to Velankanni with his family recently, said, I had to spend `8,000 for a tempo traveller from Trichy to reach Velankanni as there are no direct trains, he said. Moreover, most believers find the journey to be cumbersome. Pilgrimages are usually taken by the elderly people who cant risk such connecting journeys, said Hanumantha Kamath from West Coast Rail Yatri Development Committee in Mangaluru.

MANGALURU: The Ministry of Tourism, in response to a query in the Rajya Sabha, released comprehensive data showing trends in Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) to India and Indian Nationals' Departures (INDs) for tourism from 2019 to 2024. The figures, provided by Minister of Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, reveal a strong rebound in both inbound and outbound travel following the COVID-19 slump. India received 99.5 lakh foreign tourists in 2024, a significant increase from 64.4 lakh in 2022 and approaching the pre-pandemic high of 1.09 crore in 2019. Meanwhile, Indian outbound tourism has surged, with 3.08 crore Indians travelling abroad in 2024, up from 2.78 crore in 2023, and surpassing the 2019 figure of 2.69 crore. Among the top contributors to India's tourism in 2024 were the United States with 18.04 lakh tourists, followed by Bangladesh (17.5 lakh) and the United Kingdom (10.2 lakh). Other notable countries showing strong arrival numbers included Australia (5.18 lakh), Canada (4.76 lakh), and Sri Lanka (2.81 lakh). A few countries showed substantial recovery and even growth post-pandemic, such as Japan (1.94 lakh) and Germany (2.56 lakh). On the other hand, Indian nationals traveling abroad reached new highs. The UAE remained the top destination in 2024 with 77.8 lakh Indian travellers, followed by Saudi Arabia (34.2 lakh) and the United States (21.4 lakh). Malaysian tourism department says over half of country's tourists hail from South India Thailand (19.1 lakh) and Singapore (15.3 lakh) also saw considerable traffic, indicating the growing popularity of Southeast Asia among Indian tourists. The data reveals that in 2024, foreign tourists arrived in India from over 65 countries, showcasing the global appeal of India as a travel destination. Similarly, Indian nationals travelled to more than 65 international destinations during the same year, reflecting the growing aspiration and mobility of Indian tourists. Destinations like Vietnam, Australia, and Indonesia showed impressive year-on-year growth in attracting Indian tourists, with Vietnam growing from 1.23 lakh in 2022 to nearly 4 lakh in 2024, and Australia increasing from 4.89 lakh to 6.61 lakh in the same period. The data reflects a clear recovery trajectory for global travel involving India, with a positive outlook for both inbound tourism and outbound travel by Indian citizens. While several markets have regained momentum, others are still catching up, likely influenced by geopolitical and economic factors. Interestingly, a few countries continued to lag behind pre-pandemic levels. China, which sent 3.39 lakh tourists to India in 2019, registered just 38,960 in 2024. Similarly, Afghanistan, which once contributed over a lakh visitors in 2019, saw a drastic drop to just over 1,200 in 2024.

Thiruvananthapuram seventh safest city in India, 149th globally
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram has secured the 7th position among the safest cities in the country according to the Numbeo Safety Index 2025. Globally, it stands 149th with a safety index score of 61.1 and a crime index of 38.9. The Numbeo Safety Index is a crowdsourced, real-time assessment of how safe people feel in their countries and cities. It ranks cities based on public perceptions of safety in daily life, covering both daytime and nighttime experiences. It evaluates personal safety concerns such as risks of mugging, robbery, car theft, physical attacks and harassment in public places. The index also factors in discrimination based on skin colour, ethnicity, gender, or religion, alongside property crimes like vandalism and burglary, and violent crimes such as assault and homicide. A higher safety index score indicates a city is safer with lower crime rates and more effective law enforcement. Thiruvananthapurams position ahead of large metro cities like Chennai and Pune highlights the citys relative security and improved public safety. The capitals position reflects the impact of higher detection rates, swift responses to complaints and active citizen participation. Mangaluru top in India, Abu Dhabi safest: Index The control room camera systems are functioning effectively. The citys population is largely law-abiding, which naturally keeps crime rates low. Most incidents are reported from the outskirts, where commercial activity is higher. Anti-social elements are under constant surveillance, and preventive measures, including KAAPA, are being implemented effectively. The higher density of police stations compared to the population is another advantage. Above all, our continuous effort to reduce response time is a major factor in maintaining safety. Our focus will be to further reduce crime and make the city even safer, said city police commissioner Thomson Jose. Leading the list among Indian cities is Mangaluru in Karnataka with a safety index of 74.2. Other top cities include Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur, and Navi Mumbai. Several cities in the Middle East have earned global recognition for their safety, with five of them being ranked among the worlds top 10 safest cities. Leading the list is Abu Dhabi, holding the top spot as the safest city globally for the ninth consecutive year. India was positioned 67th among the worlds safest countries, achieving an index score of 55.8.

Experts: Continuous monitoring needed to avert landslides in Karnataka
BENGALURU: While technological interventions and continuous relaying of information can help avert tragedies, experts point out that it is also imperative to have a dedicated team of people to continuously monitor and analyse data. Experts point out that there are multiple government and private agencies working, but there is a lack of coordination. There is also a major lack of scientific input across the country. Prof GL Sivakumar Babu, Geotechnical Engineering Division, Civil Engineering Department, IISc, said there is a need to create a group of people who will be dedicated to studying the same. Stability in data management and working is needed. Government officials are posted for a short duration, and they lack the expertise. The government should consider investing in such long-term interventions rather than focusing more on compensation and loss mitigation, he said. Experts pointed out that there is a growing need to invest more in technology. Prof Sajeev Krishnan from the Centre for Earth Sciences, IISc, said that landslides are more likely to occur in the Western Ghats because of the steep slopes. Thus, areas like Coorg, Mangaluru, Idukki and Goa are vulnerable. Similar is the case with the Himalayan regions in India, where the slopes are steeper. Another expert geologist, working with the government, said, One of the prime reasons for landslides to occur is the lack of creation of a small drainage system in the hills when they are cut for civil works. This is the basic mistake which is being consistently made, apart from the improper cutting of the slopes. It is common sense to understand that when a terrain is cut or drilled, you are making the region vulnerable to tragedies. Putting pipes to drain out water from the saturated soil during monsoon is one simple solution which has been suggested but not followed. Another crucial negligence is not undertaking regular carrying capacity studies. Each time a terrain is altered, the carrying capacity and environmental impact change. Thus, a dedicated team to study all this regularly is needed. An official from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said a simple method of averting tragedies is not to undertake any construction or repair works during monsoon. They should be completed and tested before monsoon, but how projects are approved, executed and how tenders are released, inadvertently works are undertaken during monsoon, making areas more vulnerable to tragedies.
Too many halts hamper train speed upgrade on Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam stretch: Railways
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Excessive stops of several trains are posing a hindrance to increasing the top speed on the Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam stretch to 110 kmph. MPs and MLAs continue to press for additional halts, undermining the efforts of the Thiruvananthapuram railway division, according to sources with Southern Railways. While trains like Vande Bharat to Kasaragod and Mangaluru have the advantage of higher speeds, others such as Venad Express, with 19 halts, Thiruvananthapuram-Guruvayur Intercity, with 14 halts, and Vanchinad Express, with 17, run at an average speed of just 45-50 kmph between Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam. Other trains with over 10 stops on the stretch also struggle to cross this speed range. Reducing stops is not feasible, as it would spark protests by elected representatives and local associations. Our engineering team in Thiruvananthapuram is working on ways to increase the speed of trains with over 10 stops without cutting down the number of halts, a senior railway official said. Many senior officials admitted that political leaders often view new stops as a matter of pride, especially ahead of elections. A retired divisional railway manager echoed the concern, noting that Vande Bharat trains can currently run at a speed of 100-110 kmph only because they have fewer stops. If more halts are added, those trains will lose their edge. Allocation of more stoppages remains a chronic issue in Southern Railways, he said. Adding a passengers perspective, P K Krishnankutty, a senior citizen and retired state revenue official, urged politicians to rethink their approach. Our politicians have to stop demanding more stoppages. MLAs or MPs may be doing this due to the request from constituents, but they fail to understand the reason for it that the railways offers convenient and cheap transportation. Instead of pressuring the railways, they should take efforts to improve other public transportation systems, like the KSRTC, he said. The Thiruvananthapuram division is exploring technical and operational fixes, said sources. To enhance overall speeds and passenger convenience and maintain higher punctuality levels, the division is undertaking a systematic review and rationalisation of scheduled stops on selected routes. This measure is designed to improve punctuality and journey times of key services such as Vanchinad, Venad and Intercity Express, while still meeting essential passenger requirements, the railway division said.

Poshan Tracker data shows persistent malnutrition among children; central, eastern states worst hit
MANGALURU: As of June 2025, 5.46% of children under five in India were found to be wasted (low weight for height), and 15.93% were underweight (low weight for age), according to the latest Poshan Tracker data. Among children aged 06 years, 16.50% were recorded as underweight, indicating that malnutrition continues to pose a significant public health challenge across the country. The figures expose stark disparities among states. Bihar reported 20.98% underweight and 9.31% wasting rates, among the highest in India, followed closely by Madhya Pradesh (24.82% underweight, 8.19% wasting) and Jharkhand (19.13% underweight, 6.68% wasting). Other high-burden states include Tripura, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh, with underweight prevalence ranging from 17% to nearly 20%. In the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, wasting reached 11.62%the highest in the countrywhile 22.54% of children there were underweight. Despite a national push to improve nutrition through Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, the data reveals uneven outcomes. Many states, particularly in central and eastern India, continue to grapple with persistently high malnutrition rates. However, there are clear examples of improvement and effective intervention. Some states have managed to keep both wasting and underweight figures impressively low. Goa reported only 0.78% wasting and 1.96% underweight children. Sikkim (1.95% wasting, 1.69% underweight), Manipur (0.67%, 2.69%), and Himachal Pradesh (2.41%, 6.88%) also performed strongly. Southern states showed moderate success, though with some variations. Tamil Nadu emerged as a top performer in the region, with 3.54% wasting and 6.29% underweight, well below national averages. Kerala reported similarly low wasting (3.20%) but had a higher proportion of underweight children (10.18%). Karnatakas data showed 3.18% wasting, but a relatively high 16.50% underweight. Andhra Pradesh reported 4.97% wasting and 7.68% underweight, while Telangana lagged slightly behind, with 5.93% wasting and 17.00% underweight. These figures suggest that while southern states have managed to contain acute malnutrition to an extent, chronic undernutrition remains a concern, particularly in Karnataka and Telangana. According to data presented in the Lok Sabha, the government's nutrition monitoring system has evolved significantly with the implementation of the Poshan Tracker, launched in March 2021. The tool captures real-time data on growth metrics, daily attendance at Anganwadi centres, and distribution of supplementary nutrition. The integration of facial recognition for Take-Home Ration (THR) distribution and the introduction of dashboard analytics have further improved targeting and transparency. Compared to NFHS-5 (201921), which reported 32.1% underweight and 19.3% wasting among children under five, the current data reflects progress. However, the gap between the projected population of children under six (16.1 crore) and those enrolled in Anganwadi services (8.61 crore) signals the need for expanded coverage and deeper outreach.
