Girl, 3, youngest to take Santhara fast unto death
BHOPAL: A three-year-old terminally ill child in Indore became the youngest to embrace death through the Jain practice of Santhara. She passed away on March 21 minutes after the ceremony ended. Santhara or Sallekhana is a voluntary practice of fast unto death, which is undertaken when the end is imminent. But since patient Viyana Jain was just three, she couldnt have taken the decision voluntarily. It was her parents Varsha and Piyush Jain, both techies, who took the call following advice from Jain guru Rajesh Muni Maharaj. Significantly, Santhara was declared illegal by the Rajasthan High Court in August 2015. The court made it punishable under Section 306 of the IPC (abetment of suicide). The order had triggered massive protests by the Jains, who argued that while suicide was a sin, Santhara was a religious practice for self-purification. A month later, the Supreme Court suspended the HC order. Viyana was diagnosed with brain tumour in December last year and underwent surgery in Mumbai in January. After surgery her condition improved, but a couple of months later, it started deteriorating following relapse of the brain tumour. We took her to our Jain guru on March 21. He told us her end was near and recommended Santhara, said Varsha over phone. Varsha claimed that the guru holds a PhD in Santhara and had helped 107 individuals undergo Santhara. We agreed with a heavy heart. Within 10 minutes after the Santhara ritual chanting of mantras, Viyana breathed her last, she recalled. I keep visiting orphanages. She loved feeding cows and pigeons, were continuing it. Its my dream to undertake a major tree plantation in her memory in future, Varsha said.

NHRC notices to MP govt, DGP over police 'inaction' in finding girl who went missing from Bhopal
NEW DELHI: The NHRC on Thursday said it has issued notices to the Madhya Pradesh government and the state's police chief over reports that even 18 days after a six-year-old girl went missing from an underbridge in Bhopal, police have o answers. Reportedly, this is not just one case of disappearance, as over 3,400 women and girls have gone missing in the state during the last three years, as per the data of the Madhya Pradesh police. Allegedly, the CCTV networks are patchy, rapid-response teams are missing in action, and there is no coordination between the units, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said in a statement. The rights panel said it has taken suo-motu cognisance of a media report that even after 18 days since the girl went missing from an underbridge in Bhopal's Koh-e-Fiza area, police have o answers. Reportedly, the missing girl's homeless mother with eight children suspects the involvement of one of the relatives in the disappearance of her daughter, but the police is not conducting a fair investigation, and no arrests have been made in the matter to date, the statement said. The commission observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the chief secretary and director general of police of Madhya Pradesh, seeking a detailed report in two weeks, the rights panel said. According to the media report, published on April 25, a drive under the name of Operation Muskan launched last year by the state police to rescue and rehabilitate the missing girls has not shown any results, the commission said.

CHANDIGARH/BHOPAL/JAIPUR/RAIPUR: The stalemate over visa cancellations post-Pahalgam attack ended on Tuesday, with 70 Pakistan national women possessing long-term visas and No Obligation to Return to India (NORI) certificates permitted to cross over into India at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at the Attari border. Initially, the Centre revoked all visas issued to Pakistan nationals visiting India. As a result, spouses of Indian citizens with Pakistani passports faced an emotional situation; those currently visiting or residing in India had to return to Pakistan, leaving their children behind if the latter were Indian citizens. Indian nationals currently visiting Pakistan could return to India but not with their children if the latter held Pakistan passports. However, the Centre revised the visa guidelines allowing those on Long-Term Visas to stay in the country. So, on Tuesday, Pakistani immigration authorities allowed women holding Pakistani passports and married to Indian nationals and having NORI certificates and long-term visas to cross over to India, sources said. In total, 240 people from Pakistan, including more than 70 NORI visa holders, entered India, and 140 people from India returned to Pakistan via the Attari border. Saba Kiran, a Pakistani national married in India, bids goodbye to her daughter as she is being deported to her country through the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at the Attari-Wagah border, near Amritsar, Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Vignettes from Attari Family members waiting at the border post were relieved after the decision. Dr Vikram Udasi, from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, had been waiting at the Attari border since April 25 to receive his wife Priya, a Pakistani national, and child Ahan, who were in Pakistan visiting family. They were reunited after both crossed over. Finally, after the long wait, I have met my wife and child, and now we are returning to our home town. She has been on a Long-Term Visa for the past eight years, which is valid until 2026, he said. A Pakistan national, and his family members wait to cross over to their country Rishi Kumar from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, was equally happy. He was waiting for his wife and children at the Attari border for the last few days. His wife hails from Balochistan, a Pakistani national, while her two children are Indians. The three went to Pakistan to visit family. She was ultimately allowed to return to India along with her children. Edge of uncertainty In Madhya Pradesh, the fate of nine children with Pakistani passports and short-term visas hangs in balance. The state government has sought the Centres advice on nine children born to Pakistani fathers and Indian mothers, who are now with their mothers. The kids are between one year and 11 years of age. Four, aged between four and seven, are with their mother in their maternal home Indore, three others in Jabalpur and two in Bhopal. Komal, right, from Rajasthan gets emotional as her brother and sister-in-law leave for their home country Pakistan through Attari-Wagah border check-post following curbs imposed in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack, near Amritsar, Tuesday, April 29, 2025. In the Jabalpur case, the mother brought the children on short-term visas last month because of financial difficulties, as their father was unemployed in Pakistan. There were 14 Pakistani nationals in MP, including the nine children with their Indian mothers in Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur. Also, a young man (from the Sindhi community) was on a short-term visa in Bhopal. He had applied for a long-term visa just a few hours before the Centre ordered the revoking of 14 categories of visas and asked those Pakistani nationals to leave India by April 27. Weve sought the central governments advice and guidance in all these cases of the 10 Pakistani nationals, including the nine kids, a senior state police officer told this newspaper on Tuesday. Pakistani woman gets emotional while leaving for Pakistan as her husband is barred. Three of the 14 Pakistani nationals who had to leave the country by April 27 have already left and crossed the international border into Pakistan. In the case of a six-year-old kid, a Pakistani national, who had come with the Indian mother to the maternal grandparents place in Indore, the matter of both going to Pakistan is reportedly being looked into by the Foreigners Registration Office in Delhi. The Centre revoked the 14 categories of visas on April 25 in the wake of the ghastly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, and Pakistan nationals who were in India on such visas were asked to leave the country by April 27. In a communication to all state governments, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), however, added that the order would not apply to Long-Term Visa (LTV) holders besides diplomatic and official visa holders Pakistani nationals. Who stay, who dont In Rajasthan, security agencies have deported 129 of the 400 Pakistani nationals residing in the state. According to official sources, 109 individuals were sent back by April 27, and an additional 20 were deported on April 28. However, several others currently remain untraceable, and efforts are underway to locate them. In a parallel development, after the Centre said in an updated directive that Long-Term Visa holders are not required to leave the country, 362 Pakistan nationals in Rajasthan have had their LTVs approved and formally registered in the last three days. Officials clarified that applicants whose LTV cases are pending or under consideration are exempt from deportation. Notably, Pakistani Muslim women married to Indian citizens and residing in India on LTVs are also not being asked to return to Pakistan under the revised rules. A significant number of Pakistani refugees, especially Hindus, have settled in the border districts of Rajasthan, including Jaisalmer, Barmer, and particularly Jodhpur. In many cases, families have been split due to cross-border marriageswhere one half of the family is in India while the other remains in Pakistan or faces pressure to return. In at least three to four reported instances, mothers hold passports from one country, while their children have obtained citizenship in another, typically due to birth circumstances. These families now face the emotional and logistical burden of separation until new regulations are introduced or the situation stabilises. Fate of a few In Chhattisgarh, the Raigarh police have arrested two Pakistani citizens who acquired Indian voter identity cards through fraudulent means and by providing fake information. The district police said Iftekhar Sheikh (29) and Armish Sheikh (25) are brother and sister. The duo stayed in the Kodatarai area of Raigarh district, about 230 km east of Raipur. Additional SP (Raigarh) told this newspaper, Their father, Yakub Sheikh, is Indian and stays in Raigarh. He married a Pakistani woman who died during the Covid-19 pandemic. The two children were born in Pakistan but were raised and schooled in India. appu Kumar, a Pakistani national who was living in Jammu & Kashmir, shows a copy of his identification card as he is being deported to his country through the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at the Attari-Wagah border, near Amritsar, Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Both are here on valid Long-Term Visas, and, at present, they cant be deported. But they furnished wrong information and procured Indian voter ID cards, following which a case has been registered against them. The police had launched a drive to ensure no Pakistan nationals were found staying illegally in the district, and both the Pakistan nationals were traced during the intensive verification campaign, said Jutemill police station in-charge Prashant Rao. The police have registered the case against both under sections 199, 200 (false statement made in declaration), 419 (cheating by impersonation), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will), 468 (forgery to cheat) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. Uncertainty surrounds fate of nine Pakistani children in Madhya Pradesh as Centre revokes visas
BHOPAL: The fate of nine children born to Pakistani fathers and Indian mothers in Madhya Pradesh hangs in the balance after the Centre revoked 14 visa categories for Pakistani nationals. The state government has sought central guidance on the children's status, as they currently reside with their mothers across three cities in the state. The nine children, aged between one and 11 years, are currently living with their Indian mothers across Madhya Pradesh. In Jabalpur, three kids, the eldest of them being an 11-year-old girl and the youngest being her one-year-old brother, had to come to India with their mother on short term visas last month, as their father was jobless in Pakistan for a long time, forcing mother to come to her parents place. In total there were 14 Pakistani nationals in MP, including the nine children with their Indian mothers in Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur. MP chief minister Mohan Yadav said the new decision will come into effect on May 1. An official said modalities for implementing the order was being discussed
DEHRADUN: In a blow to Uttarakhands two-decade-long quest for a permanent capital, the state government has decided to lift the freeze zone designation from land earmarked for the Assembly and Secretariat, effectively shelving the 2023 master plan aimed at establishing a fixed seat of governance. Housing Secretary R. Meenakshi Sundaram confirmed the development, stating, A proposal for this will be prepared and brought before the Cabinet. The state has held Assembly sessions alternately in the temporary capital Dehradun and the summer capital Gairsain for 25 years. The freeze zone, intended to block development in areas reserved for key government infrastructure, was imposed in March 2023. A notification was issued by the Town and Country Planning Department, allowing five months to draft a Master Plan. However, more than two years later, the plan has not materialised. A government spokesperson said, Despite the stipulated five-month period, the Master Plan could not be finalised even after two years. The freeze had halted construction and development across a large stretch, from Raipur to Thano Road in the north, the main Haridwar Road in the south, east of the drain to Haridwar Road in the west (excluding the Ordnance Factory boundary), and from Bhopal Pani to Barasi Ground and Kali Mati village boundary in the east. Sources indicated that the Assembly and Secretariat proposal failed due to administrative inertia and practical hurdles. Adding to the delay, the land identified for the Assembly did not get final clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. Although in-principle approval had been granted, the state government delayed submitting required details, leading to the approval being revoked. Local pressure also played a role in the government's decision to revoke the freeze. Shantanu, a resident of the affected zone, said, For two years, people in villages like Balawala, Nakraunda, Nathuwawala, Gullarghati, Harrawala, Kuanwala, and Ranjhawala have been unable to carry out construction on their own land, despite owning it. He added that he had appealed directly to the Chief Minister to lift the freeze. Environmental concerns further complicated the project. Environmentalist Dev Raghavendra told TNIE, The state government had previously decided to cut 2,155 trees for the proposed assembly building in Raipurs Bhopalpani area. The building was planned within approximately 60 hectares of reserved forest in Bhopalpani, which could have had a very adverse impact on the environment. The lifting of the freeze zone is now expected to offer relief to affected residents, but it also marks a major retreat from the states longstanding ambition to finalise a permanent capital.

BHOPAL: Two Muslim men have been arrested by police in Damoh district of BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly sharing offensive social media posts related to the Pahalgam terror attack . Damoh district police superintendent Shrutkirti Somvanshi told TNIE on Wednesday that two men were arrested from different places: Wasim Khan from Bhopal on Tuesday night, and Tanveer Qureshi from Damoh on Wednesday morning. Both men are aged between 35 and 40 years. While Tanveer is unemployed, police are probing the possibility of Wasim working for a Bhopal-headquartered regional news channel. The two men have been accused of sharing offensive social media posts which drew parallels between the killing of Indian tourists in Pahalgam and the past lynching of Muslims for not raising Hindu religious slogans. The posts came on the Damoh district police radar following specific inputs and continued social media monitoring by the cyber cell cops. Subsequently a FIR was registered against the two men by police on behalf of the state government at the Damoh Kotwali police station on Tuesday late night, under BNS Sections 353(2), 196, 299 and 3(5) which deal with statements/false information which could incite enmity between religious groups, promoting enmity between different groups, outraging religious feelings and crime with a common intent, the SP-Damoh added. The Damoh district police are now probing the prime origin of the somewhat similar social media post made by the two men on Tuesday after the Pahalgam attack, which killed 28 tourists, including an LIC branch manager from MPs Indore. Indore resident Samuel Nathaniel was shot dead after he failed to recite Kalma, says family
BHOPAL: A Christian family from Indore lost its head, 50-year-old Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) branch manager Sushil Nathaniel, in the terror attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday. Hailing from Jobat in western MPs Alirajpur district, Sushil was currently posted as the LIC branch manager in native Alirajpur district, his family comprising a teacher wife, Bank of Baroda-Surat employee daughter Akanksha, and student son Austin resided in Abhinandan Nagar area of Indore. Sushil, a native of Jobat in Alirajpur district, MP, was posted as the LIC branch manager in Alirajpur. His family including his wife (a teacher), daughter Akanksha (a bank employee in Surat), and son Austin (a student), lived in Indore's Abhinandan Nagar. Since Article 370 was abrogated in 2019, Sushil always wanted to be in Kashmir to experience with family the heaven on earth. He finally managed to be there with family, but hell never return alive now. His son Goldie told us over phone that the terrorists asked Sushil to kneel down and recite the Kalma, but he wasn't able to as he was a Christian, he saw his father being shot dead by the terrorists, Sushils cousin Sanjay Kumrawat, who also lives in Indore said on Wednesday. As per Nathaniel's familys sources in Indore, Sushil shielded his wife by hiding her behind a tree when the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. His 22-year-old daughter, Akanksha, however, sustained wounds in the leg, but is out of danger, following medical treatment. The middle-aged Sushil had reached Kashmir with wife and two children just two days before the Pahalgam attack. Since he was posted in Alirajpur district and Im posted in Indore, we were connected more over the phone. I last talked to him over the phone a month back and he was very excited about going to Kashmir. He wanted to be there since the abrogation of Article 370. The terrorists have shot dead those who werent from their faith. We stand firmly behind our government and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand the strongest possible action against the terrorists and their handlers, Kumrawat demanded. Back in Sushils parental home town, Jobat in Alirajpur district (165 km from Indore), the LIC branch managers youngest aunt Susan was seething in anger. He was posted in Alirajpur district as LIC branch manager for three years, I last talked to him over phone on April 20 when offered me Easter greetings, just a few hours before he left with family on vacation to Kashmir. For how long will we continue to lose our kids to the bullets of terrorists? I appeal to PM Modi that the way they (terrorists) shot our sons publicly, the same way the concerned terrorists should be shot dead on the spot, instead of nabbing them alive and waiting for the court verdict. Why should we show mercy, when they dont believe in it with us? According to the Indore district collector Ashish Singh, the body of Sushil Nathaniel will be flown to Indore in the afternoon. The funeral will take place in Indore only.

'Shocks conscience', says Delhi HC on Baba Ramdev's 'Sharbat Jihad' claim against Rooh Afza
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday came down heavily upon Patanjali founder Baba Ramdev for his 'Sharbat Jihad' remarks against pharmaceutical and food company Hamdard and its popular drink Rooh Afza. Ramdev made the controversial remark, the video of which has gone viral, while promoting his company product, Gulaab Sharbat, on April 3. It shocks the conscience of court. Indefensible, the court remarked even as it asked the counsel representing Ramdev remain present after seeking instructions, according to Bar and Bench . In the controversial video, Ramdev targeted Hamdard's Rooh Afza and claimed that Hamdard was using its money for building masjids and madrasas. Ramdev also used the term 'Sharbat Jihad' in his video. Hamdard has filed the suit against Ramdev seeking removal of the yoga guru's videos on the remark from social media, Live Law report said. Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Hamdard, submitted before the High Court that Ramdev was going on unbated against Hamdard and attacking the religion of the company's owners, Bar and Bench noted. Rohtagi also told the Court that Ramdev had earlier faced strictures from the Supreme Court for targeting allopathy. On a lighter note, Rohatgi conceded that there he had appeared on he wrong side. A hard hand is required to nip this in bud, Rohatgi argued about the present case against Ramdev, according to the Bar and Bench report. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh had last week filed a police complaint against Ramdev in Bhopal for allegedly promoting religious hatred, as per a news report. According to the Times of India, Ramdev later defended his remark, saying he had not named any specific brand in his video.

Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary to become African cheetahs second home on April 20
BHOPAL: Over two and half years after Kuno National Park (KNP) in tiger state Madhya Pradeshs Sheopur district became the first home to African cheetahs in the country, the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary (GSWS) in Mandsaur district is set to become their second home. Two adult cheetahs from KNP, possibly a South African male coalition Prabhas and Pavak will be relocated to the GSWS on April 20. The official announcement in this regard was made at a meeting in Bhopal on Friday to review the implementation of the Cheetah Project in MP. The meeting was attended, among others, by Union forest minister Bhupender Yadav and MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Since last summer, the GSWS has been preparing the necessary infrastructure for the animals habitat. It has built three big enclosures for them in a 64 sqkm area. The first two arrivals, the South African male coalition from KNP, will be kept together in one big enclosure, an official at the sanctuary told this newspaper. As per National Tiger Conservation Authority, over `112 crore has been spent on the cheetah project, with 67% invested in MP. While the male coalition will be shifted from KNP to GSWS (a distance of 300-odd km. separates them) on Sunday, more cheetahs will be translocated there in phases. Additional cheetahs are expected from South Africa, Botswana, and Kenya. Four will likely be flown in from Botswana by May, and another four later. Negotiations with Kenya are also underway to translocate cheetahs to India. An official stated on Friday that as the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary borders Rajasthan, both states have agreed to form an inter-state cheetah conservation complex. Addressing the meeting, the CM revealed plans to enhance tourism at the KNP through improved direct road and air connectivity from Gwalior. He announced plans to develop a paved, all-season road from Gwalior to KNP and establish a tent city within the forests for tourists. While maintaining that the cheetah cubs born in MP have the highest survival rate in the world, the CM said, the GSWS offers an ideal environment for cheetahs. The meeting was also informed about a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital and rescue center to be set up in Kuno with central assistance. The facility will serve cheetahs and support cattle care across the region. The state will also tap into nature tourisms potential and involve more youth and women in wildlife tourism. Women self-help groups and Cheetah Mitras (local volunteers aiding cheetah conservation) will be trained as tourist guides. Kuno reserve currently houses 26 cheetahs Currently, the KNP has 26 adult cheetahs and cubs, including 17 in the wild and nine in the enclosures. Over seven decades after the fastest land animal became officially extinct in Indian wilds due to rampant hunting, eight Namibian cheetahs were flown to India and released at the KNP in September 2022, as part of the ambitious cheetah reintroduction project.

Bomb threats to bank, ordnance factory on same day keep Madhya Pradesh police on their toes
BHOPAL: Cops in Madhya Pradesh were on high alert after two emails received on the same day threatened to blow up a bank and ordnance factory at two separate places in the state. While the first e-mail was received in the states most populated city and commercial capital Indore, the other was received by the management of the ordnance factory in Itarsi in central MPs Narmadapuram district. Both the mails were sent on Thursday. In Indore, the mail, which was received by staff at the Punjab National Bank (PNB), threatened to blow up its branch in the thickly populated Siyaganj commercial area. Acting on a complaint from the bank, teams of the Indore polices bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) conducted an extensive search in the bank branch, but nothing incriminating was found. In Itarsi, the office of the general manager of the ordnance factory received the mail at 10 am on Thursday, containing a threat to blow up the factory. Along with the staff of the ordnance factory, we conducted a thorough search on Thursday. Our BDDS teams continued the search operation on Friday also, but nothing has been found so far anywhere. A case has been lodged on the complaint by the ordnance factory management under Section 351(4) BNS and 66(F) and further investigations are underway, Narmadapuram districts additional SP Ashutosh Shukla said. Two months ago, two similar bomb threats had kept the MP police busy on February 18. While the Ballia-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Kamayani Express train was stopped at Bina railway station in Sagar district and checked thoroughly following a phone call claiming that a bomb was planted in the long-distance train, an email about a bomb at a private school in Jabalpur district prompted the police to carry out a similar security check. A few weeks prior to it, a similar email had led to the evacuation of students from two prominent private schools in Indore, followed by extensive checking by the BDDS teams. A senior state police officer posted at the state PHQ in Bhopal said, While the e-mail and telephonic threats so far have turned out to be hoaxes, the growing number of such threats are being closely monitored and investigated to find out a possible common link between them.
Madhya Pradesh releases six GPS tagged captive-bred vultures into wild
BHOPAL: The Vulture State Madhya Pradesh has, for the first time, GPS tagged and released into the wild, six captive-bred vultures of Indian resident varieties a development which holds the key to successful wilding (hard release) of more captive-bred vultures in future. The six GPS-tagged vultures, from the two Indian resident varieties two White-Rumped and four Long-Billed Vultures (three males and three females aged between 4 and 8 years) were released in the wild on Wednesday early morning near the Halali Dam in Raisen district of central MP. The six captive-bred vultures released in the wild are among 85-plus captively bred Indian resident species vultures, which have been housed at the Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre, which has been the nucleus of the state's dedicated vulture conservation-breeding program since 2014. The Centre is in a collaborative initiative of the MP Forest Department and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) near the Kerwa Dam in Bhopal. Through the GPS tags fit the six Indian resident species vulture, were keeping a round-the-clock tab on their behavioural and movement patterns, as well as their coexistence with other vultures in the area, Van Vihar National Park-Bhopal director Avdhesh Meena told TNIE on Friday. Halali Dam near the trijunction of Bhopal-Vidisha and Raisen districts has emerged among the most preferred habitats of Indian resident and migratory species vultures, as per the findings of the recent winter vulture census in the state, Meena added. Though just early days since their release, the captive-bred vultures in the first three days of their hard release (wilding) have been found to be moving in a 1 km radius from the spot where they were released. Were continuously monitoring them and distributing educational pamphlets in villages of the area, said Meena. The pamphlets contain pictures of the six vultures and their GPS tags. The villagers have been urged to inform the forest department in case any of the vultures are found injured or located for a long time at one place only, to ensure proper safety of the vultures. The vultures are being regularly tracked at the cattle carcass dumping site of a big gaushala (cowshed) in the area which has been among the prime reasons for the area emerging as an ideal habitat of wild vultures in the state. In the long run, the GPS tagging of the six vultures will particularly help us in observing which part of the country is best suited for them, is it their home state MP or other parts of India. This first-of-its kind hard release (GPS tagging and wilding) of captive bred vultures in central India, happened 18 days after a one year old Eurasian Griffon male vulture (rescued from the states Vindhya region in January) which was housed at the vulture conservation-breeding centre in Bhopal for two months, was rewilded with GPS satellite tag on March 29 in the same area where the six Indian resident species vultures have been released on April 16. That Eurasian Griffon vulture which was severely dehydrated when rescued in January, seems to be on an amazing journey back to home (Eurasia). In the 21 days since its release, it has flown more than 2500-plus kms and is currently tracked near the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan border, Meena informed.

Probe into mystery death of firebrand MP Congress leader reopened after 28 yrs
BHOPAL: More than 28 years after firebrand Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress leader Sarla Mishras suicidal death at her house in Bhopal, a judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) court in Bhopal has ordered the police to reinvestigate the case while observing that earlier investigations appeared to have been incomplete. The court of JMFC Palak Rai, in its order, stated that the facts in Anurag Mishras (younger brother of Sarla Mishra) protest petition and witness statements (the police filed a closure report in this) point to an incomplete investigation. On this ground, the court ordered the TT Nagar police to reinvestigate the case. The order came 56 days after the Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the CJM, Bhopal to take a call on the final report of the police as per the law. Anurag Mishra said, Wednesdays order has raised our hopes of justice. It was a murder, but was deemed a suicide by the local police under political pressure of those in power in 1997. Reacting to Mishras charge, Congress MP Digvijaya Singh (MP CM in 1997) said on Thursday, The case isnt new, but is more than 20 years old; get it probed as many times as one wants. I welcome it. Anurag Mishra made a fresh allegation, My elder brother Anand Mishra met Sarla Didi two or three days before the February 14, 1997 incident, when my sister told him about growing bitterness and differences between her, then CM Digvijaya Singh and his brother Laxman Singh, Rajgarh MP. Why didnt the police record my elder brothers statements? The 28-yr-old case and unanswered questions Hailing from Narmadapuram, Sarla Mishra was a firebrand state Youth Congress leader. She is believed to have had strong connections with Congress politicians. On February 14, 1997, she was found severely burnt inside her government house in Bhopal. She died at New Delhis Safdarjung Hospital on Feb 19, 1997. The TT Nagar police of Bhopal district, after three years long probe concluded it to be a case of suicide and closed the probe in the case in 2000. The closure report, however, was filed by the police in the court more than 19 years later in Bhopal. Her brother Anurag petitioned against the closure report and alleged that it was actually a case of murder.

Bhopal Diary | Is another Congress mayor mulling switch to BJP?
A purported image of Rewa mayor Ajay Mishra Baba attending a meet in presence of state BJP president VD Sharma has sparked speculations of another mayoral switch over from the Congress to BJP. Mishra termed the speculations unfounded, adding that the image pertained to a meeting of mayors of various MP cities under leadership of Indore mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava with Khajuraho MP VD Sharma. However, informed political sources in the Vindhya region claimed several other senior Congress leaders in Rewa district may be in touch with the BJP leadership, adding that deputy CM Rajendra Shukla is preventing the entry of such Congress leaders into the BJP. Gurjars prohibit DJ use, vulgarity at weddings The Gurjar caste (among prominent OBC groups in MP) has reportedly decided to ban use of DJ music at all social ceremonies, including marriages in Harda district of southwestern MP. They also decided to put a leash on the growing trend of women dancing in public gaze, particularly at marriage processions, which makes them vulnerable to anti-social elements who invade their privacy by filming videos which are later circulated over social media. In a complaint submitted at the TT Nagar police station in Bhopal on Tuesday, he also accused the Yoga Guru of spreading hatred, animosity and hostility among people on communal lines through the video released on his X account on April 3. Singh further demanded that Ramdev be booked by the police for outraging religious feelings and promoting enmity among groups on the basis of religion. While addressing the Yoga Guru as Vyapari (businessman) Ramdev, in his complaint, Singh alleged that as the owner of Patanjali Ayurveda Limited company, with the aim of increasing his business, he released a video on April 3 on his official X account. In the video while marketing Patanjali's Gulab Sharbat, he (Ramdev) said that there is a company in the name of Sharbat which gives Sharbat, but the money derived from its sale is used to build madrasas and mosques. Okay, this is their religion, but if you drink that Sharbat, then mosques and madrasas will be built and if you drink Patanjali's Gulab Sharbat, then Gurukul will be built, Acharya Kulam will be built, and Patanjali University Indian Education Board will move forward. That is why I say that there is something called Sharbat Jihad, just like Love Jihad. Vote Jihad is going on, Sharbat Jihad is also going on. This statement of Ramdev is hurtful to religious sentiments and is full of animosity. It has an adverse effect on religious sentiments and amounts to a punishable offence under Section 196 (1) (a), 299 of the Indian Penal Code 2023 and various sections of the IT Act, Singh submitted in his complaint. Singh said that Ramdev has built an empire worth crores of rupees by taking the help of religion and nationalism to sell his products, whereas many of Patanjali's products have not met the set standards and have been banned by competent court. He didnt keep himself away from taking advantage of the opportunity even in the Covid pandemic and tried to deceive the whole country by making false promises of making a vaccine for Corona, and later apologised after being reprimanded by the Supreme Court. But even today he is misleading the public by his actions and playing with their religious sentiments, Singh added. According to Singh, the entire country knows the 'Hamdard' company, which businessman Ramdev has mentioned without naming it, has been trading Ayurvedic and Unani medicines in our country for about 100 years. Businessman Ramdev's opposition to Rooh Afza syrup just because the owner of the company is a Muslim, amounts to hate speech and calling the sale of the said syrup Sharbat Jihad is unconstitutional. Later talking to journalists, the septuagenarian Congress MP said, Ill wait for a week, if the FIR isnt registered by Bhopal Police by then, Ill move to the Court in the matter. While interacting with journalists further, the former MP CM also questioned why vast tract of land allotted to Patanjali Group in MP for varied business purposes, including Yoga, organic fertilizers, organic cotton production and food processing in Raisen, Narsinghpur, Jhabua, Satna, Sagar, Shivpuri, Guna and other districts was lying unutilized. The MP government cancelled land allotment to Infosys as the allotted land wasnt being utilised by the IT major, so why is similar action not being initiated against him (Ramdev) and his business group? Reacting to Singhs complaint against the Yoga Guru, Madhya Pradeshs cabinet minister Vishwas Sarang addressed the former MP CM as Diggy Miyan. Diggy Miyan has an objection to saffron clothes worn by Baba Ramdev and not actually Baba Ramdev. He is slagging Baba Ramdev, but has taken pride in the past while glorifying controversial and extremist Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, he said Baba Ramdev, who has promoted Yoga across the world for healthy living, is seen by him (Singh) as a villain. Are foreign forces sponsoring him (Singh), does he derive pleasure in speaking against Sanatan Dharma, how far will he take his politics of minority appeasement?, he added.

Pact with dairy board will double milk collection in MP co-op sector: Shah
BHOPAL: The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the MP Dairy Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Bhopal on Sunday, in the presence of Union Minister for Cooperation Amit Shah and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. This agreement aims to expand, diversify, and modernize the cooperative dairy sector in Madhya Pradesh. Addressing the state-level cooperatives conference thereafter, Shah said, The MoU between the NDDB and the state dairy federation targets doubling milk collection by the state cooperative sector from the current 12 lakh litres to 24 lakh litres. MP produces 5.5 crore litres of milk, which accounts for 9% of the countrys total milk output. However, less than 1% of milk comes from dairy cooperatives. Even when it comes to surplus or marketable milk, which is left after domestic consumption, only 2.5% of 3.50 crore litres comes from dairy cooperatives. Only 17% of villages in MP have milk collection facilities. The MoU has created scope for increasing dairy cooperatives penetration to the remaining 83% villages, Shah said. Without naming the Congress regimes in the past at the Centre, Shah said that the cooperative movement had almost died in many states, as the existing laws remained unchanged to keep in sync with changing times. Seventy-five years after the countrys independence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a separate ministry for cooperation (cooperatives) at the centre. In 3.5 years, weve worked to usher sea change, particularly by framing model bylaws to foster the growth of primary cooperative societies.
Unauthorised procession triggers communal violence in MP's Guna, nine arrested
BHOPAL: Nine persons, all from the minority community, have been arrested so far in connection with the alleged attack on a Hanuman Jayanti procession which was being taken out without permission of authorities in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday evening. According to official sources, nine men, including the prime accused and history-sheeter Vicky Khan, who is believed to have masterminded the alleged attack on the procession, have been arrested by the local police till Sunday afternoon. The alleged incident in the communally sensitive Karnal Ganj locality of Guna city had happened at around 7:30 pm, when the Hanuman Jayanti procession, led by the local BJP municipal councillor Om Prakash Gabbar Kushwah, was passing through the sensitive locality. When the procession reached near a place of worship, some individuals, led by history-sheeter Vicky Khan, objected to the loud DJ music and offensive religious slogans. The heated exchange between the groups suddenly turned violent. Just when the heated exchange of words was happening, people from the top of the mosque started pelting stones on the procession. Stones were pelted on the procession by people from houses neighbouring the mosque, including Vicky Khans house. Vickys son, Amin Khan, fired from a pistol on one of the devotees in the procession, but the devotee Rajat Gwal had a narrow escape. The attack, which was carried out by Vicky Khan and his men, has resulted in injuries to nine to ten forming part of the procession, the BJP councillor Kushwah mentioned in the complaint. Heavy police force, which was led by the Guna district police superintendent Sanjiv Kumar Sinha, later had a tough time controlling the situation. An FIR, on the complaint of Kushwah, was registered at the Guna City Kotwali against five named and 1520 unidentified accused, including Vicky Khan, at around 11 pm on Saturday. Nine men, including the prime accused and mastermind of the attack, history-sheeter Vicky Khan, and one of his sons, Sameer, have been arrested and search is on for the other accused, ASP-Guna Man Singh Thakur said on Sunday. The nine arrested men, besides the prime accused Vicky Khan and his son Sameer Khan, include Taufiq, Sonu, Anas, Shaqil, Atiq, Sahil and Sohrab. Five of them, including Vicky Khan, have a criminal history. While nine men have been arrested following the late-night FIR registered under BNS sections 109, 296, 324(4), 125, 191(2) and (3), 190 and 115(2), no action has yet been taken against the BJP councillor for taking out the religious procession on Saturday evening without permission. Importantly, the present BJP councillor Kushwah had defeated Vicky Khan in the past in the urban body civic elections. After the Saturday evening incident, the Guna district police superintendent, Sanjiv Sinha, had confirmed that the Hanuman Jayanti procession was being taken out without any permission from authorities. Ive cross-checked it from the concerned sub-divisional magistrate, who has confirmed that the religious procession was being taken out sans permission. I was myself monitoring the entire development on the CCTV camera. The tension erupted due to the procession stopping near the place of worship and those in the procession indulging in slogan shouting, Sinha had told journalists on Saturday late night.
BHOPAL: The Congress on Sunday alleged that the son of a BJP MLA was involved in the incident wherein a group of people forcibly entered into the famous Mata Tekri temple in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas after it had closed. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, however, denied the allegations against the MLA's son and said action was being taken against those accused in the case pertaining to the incident. A group of people forcibly entered the temple on the intervening night of Friday-Saturday after it had closed for the nighr and allegedly beat up its priest as he refused to let them in, police earlier said. The police on Saturday registered a case, in which the MLA's son was not named. The CCTV footage of the incident emerged on social media, which showed some SUVs, a couple of them with red beacons, entering into the temple premises, located on a hill in Dewas city. Reacting to the incident, state Congress chief Jitu Patwari alleged, The arrogance of power has now grown in the family tree of the BJP leaders. The son of Indore MLA Golu Shukla, who had reached the Chamunda Mata temple in Dewas, got down from the convoy of cars with red lights and beat up the priest because he was not opening the door of the closed temple. The priest failed to get justice even after 36 hours and despite the evidence, he claimed. The BJP government has now become slave of goons, he charged. @BJP4MP - ! # # ! , ! #Indore , @BJP4India pic.twitter.com/8hKmy5F14v Jitendra (Jitu) Patwari (@jitupatwari) April 13, 2025 State Congress media cell chief Mukesh Nayak alleged that the BJP, which calls itself hekedar (custodian) of dharma (religion) and culture, has been completely exposed in this incident. Indore MLA Golu Shukla's son indulges in hooliganism at 12.40 am (on Saturday) in the temple of Maa Chamunda, beats up the priest, and the BJP is silent. This is the ugly face of the arrogance of power and BJP's fake devotion towards religion, Nayak said. Asked about the Congress' allegations, state BJP spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi said there was no involvement of MLA Golu Shukla or his son in the incident. Those who were responsible for the incident were already booked by the police. Legal action will be taken against all the accused involved in the incident, he said. Earlier, City Superintendent of Police Dinesh Agrawal on Saturday told reporters that the group members asked the priest to open the gates, and when he refused, he was allegedly abused and beaten up. An FIR was registered against them and the footage of some 50 CCTV cameras was being examined, he said. Asked if the son of a BJP leader led the group, Agrawal said the case was under investigation.
Ahead of Ambedkar Jayanti, Madhya Pradesh names newest wildlife sanctuary after Dr B R Ambedkar
BHOPAL: Ahead of Dr. B.R. Ambedkars 134th birth anniversary, the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government has named its 25th wildlife sanctuary in his honour, dedicating it to the Father of the Indian Constitution. The state forest department issued on Friday, a notification declaring 258.64 square km of protected forest area in the North Sagar forest division of the Bundelkhand region as Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Wildlife Sanctuary. The protected forest area of two development blocks of Sagar district, including Banda and Shahgarh, will form part of the new sanctuary. Following Friday's two-page notification, the new sanctuary will be the first wildlife sanctuary, national park or wildlife sanctuary in MP to be named after Dr BR Ambedkar -- who was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow town of MPs present Indore district. While it would be the first wildlife sanctuary in MP to be named after Dr BR Ambedkar, the neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, already has Dr BR Ambedkar Bird Sanctuary in the Kunda area of the Pratapgarh district. The new sanctuary, declared through a notification on Friday, assumes particular significance, as it will serve as the protected and secured wild corridor between Panna Tiger Reserve in Bundelkhand region and the recently declared Madhav Tiger Reserve in the Gwalior-Chambal region. A tiger-cheetah corridor is the ambitious idea of central and state governments in the Gwalior-Chambal region of MP and adjoining Rajasthan, spanning from Madhav National Park-Tiger Reserve in Shivpuri district to the Ranthambore National Park-Tiger Reserve in Rajasthans Sawai Madhopur district, via the first of home African cheetahs in India the Kuno National Park in MPs Sheopur district. Once Madhav Tiger Reserve and Panna Tiger Reserve get connected with the new wild corridor the Dr BR Ambedkar Wildlife Sanctuary it will lead to the emergence of perhaps the longest and largest tiger corridor of North-Central India. According to sources in the state forest department, the MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav is likely to publicly unveil the new wildlife sanctuary on the Ambedkar Jayanti on Monday. This newest development of declaring a new wildlife sanctuary in the tiger-cheetah-leopard-wolf-gharial and vulture state, is the third major development in wildlife and forest conservation in the central Indian state, after declaring of two new tiger reserves Ratapani Tiger Reserve in central MP and the Madhav Tiger Reserve in the Gwalior-Chambal region. Not just that, but the state is likely to get two more wildlife sanctuaries by the end of this month in form of the Omkareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary (a project which has been pending since decades) between Dewas and Khandwa districts of western and southwestern MP and the Jahangarh Wildlife Sanctuary which will neighbor the Kuno National Park in Sheopur district. While Omkareshwar Sanctuary which is proposed to come up in 614.07 square kms will serve as the western limit of tiger movement in MP, the Jahangarh Sanctuary is planned to come up in 6.32 square kms.

BHOPAL: High alert has been sounded on the Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh border in the wake of a bird flu outbreak among wild crows in Jhik Bijuri area of the central Indian states Shahdol district. At least 35 wild crows have died since April 2 in a radius of 1.5 km in Jhik Bijuri area, which is around 110 km from MPs Shahdol district headquarters and just 5-7 km from the Koriya district of Chhattisgarh. The sudden deaths of crows started on April 2 in the area, prompting the authorities in Shahdol district to send samples of crows (two dead crows) to ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal. On April 8, the institute confirmed the presence of the bird flu (avian influenza) causing H5N1 influenza virus. All the 35 crows who have died since have been buried adequately in pursuance with the necessary safety protocols. Since then, high alert has been sounded in Jhik Bijuri and adjoining areas, and a three-tier security and surveillance system has been put in place for proper security and surveillance of crows and other birds in the concerned area. As there are no commercial poultry farms/shops in the area, our special surveillance teams are conducting surveys of small backyard poultries of individual villagers to monitor poultry health, Dr Ram Kumar Pathak, deputy director of animal husbandry department in Shahdol district said. So far, avian influenza symptoms and deaths have been limited to crows and poultry, with no impact on other bird species. A control room has been set up to coordinate ongoing surveillance efforts. Since April 2, a total of 35 crows have died in the area, with the most recent deaths reported on Thursday. While confirming the developments, the Shahdol districts chief medical and health officer Dr Rajesh Mishra said, Our special medical teams are also conducting surveys of human population in the concerned area, but nothing has so far been found to suggest any possibility of the bird flu infection having sneaked into the humans. Our community health center in Jhik Bijuri, however, has been put on heightened alert. The current bird flu outbreak among animals began about a month and a half after avian influenza was reported to have infected and killed cats and poultry in Madhya Pradeshs Chhindwara district in the Mahakoshal region.

Bhopal: A US-based highly paid IT professional of Indian origin has allegedly been duped of a whopping Rs 2.68 crore in the name of marriage by an Indore-based young woman and her brother. According to Indore police crime branch sources, a highly paid IT professional V Kalaga, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh and is working in a premier company in North Carolina, was looking for a perfect Indian girl to marry. However, Barkha, for whom the US-based IT professional fell for, was actually a married woman Simran from Indore. With brother Vishal's help, Simran had copied the picture of a budding female model from the Instagram and then posted it as the picture of the fictitious woman Barkha on the matrimonial portal. When the IT professional slowly became confident of a potential marriage with Barkha aka Simran, he started regularly getting connected with her over WhatsApp. Knowing well that the North Carolina-based man was now under her total influence, Barkha aka Simran and her brother Vishal, started requesting monetary help for a host of reasons, spanning from paying outstanding loans to funding the life-saving advanced medical treatment of their father. Craving for chicken landed fake cardiologist N John Camm in MP police's custody
BHOPAL : Craving for mouth-watering chicken delicacies landed fake cardiologist N John Camm aka Narendra Yadav in Madhya Pradesh police's custody, it has emerged. Tracking his cell-phone location, cops from Damoh district reached Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, when they found Yadav's phone was switched off. Unable to track his location subsequently, the Damoh district police team contacted their cyber cell team back in MP, who while tracking Yadav's call details, zeroed in on one phone number to which multiple calls had been made by the fake cardiologist on Monday. The cops on the ground in Prayagraj found that the concerned phone number pertained to a popular non-vegetarian restaurant. Reaching there, the restaurant staff admitted that the caller (Yadav) had been calling them repeatedly seeking delivery of multiple chicken delicacies at his home, which they refused to make due to staff and distance constraints. Based on the address given by the restaurant staff, the police located Yadav's rented flat in a premier township and nabbed him from there on Monday afternoon. Yadavs ongoing questioning and revelations Currently in police remand in MP's Damoh district, Yadav (being probed over allegations of the deaths of seven patients after minimally invasive surgical procedures) has revealed that he changed his name from Narendra Yadav to N John Camm, owing to a five-year-old ban imposed on him by authorities in India during 2015. He was banned from any kind of medical practice by authorities in 2015, following a case against him in Noida (UP) for forging documents related to medical qualifications and experience. Owing to it only, he changed his name from Narendra Yadav to N John Camm (which resembled the name of famous British clinical cardiologist John Camm) and started working again, a senior Damoh police official told The New Indian Express . Yadav's grilling has also revealed that he doesn't hail from Dehradun (Uttarakhand), but is instead a native of Kanpur (UP) and lived in a rented flat in Prayagraj district. He completed his MBBS from North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri in 1996, but couldn't crack the MD exam, despite repeated attempts. Later, he did his MRCP and other courses from the UK and worked there for some years. He has also worked in Germany and the US and keeps on visiting Nuremberg. Further, he has also worked in hospitals in other parts of India, including Hyderabad, Delhi and Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) and worked in the Mission Hospital in Damoh between December 2024 and February 2025 on the basis of the fake MD and DM (Cardiology) degrees for which he was booked by the Damoh Kotwali police on Sunday midnight. As far as the seven deaths, which allegedly happened after angiography and angioplasty procedures at the Mission Hospital in Damoh (MP), at least three deaths are directly related to minimally invasive surgical procedures performed by Yadav. A team of cardiologists at the Jabalpur Medical College are in the final stages of their probe into the deaths, sources said. According to the Damoh district police superintendent Shrutkirti Somvanshi, It's still early days into Yadav's grilling and more disclosures are likely in the coming days. We'll request the central government's help in verifying the disclosures of Yadav's visits and working experience of UK, US and Germany, particularly as he has travelled multiple times to Nuremberg in Germany.

Wife abandons man over water crisis in MP village; pipeline work starts after his complaint
BHOPAL: A village in eastern Madhya Pradesh's Dindori district is hoping for an end to its water woes, courtesy of a woman who refused to put up with the water scarcity and left her husband in protest. The man, Jitendra Soni of Devra village, took his water-induced marital grievance to the district administration during the weekly 'Jansunwai' (a public outreach programme) on Tuesday. Acting on Soni's complaint, the Dindori collector directed officials from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to resolve the water shortage in Devra, located just 3 km from the district headquarters. The tribal-dominated Dindori district, bordering Chhattisgarh, is located about 460 km from the MP capital Bhopal. Soni told PTI , My wife has abandoned me due to the water crisis in my village. She went to her parents' house along with our children. I shared my plight with the district collector. The PHE department has been directed to take steps to arrange water in the village. Soni said he tried to persuade his wife Laxmi to stay back, but she didn't listen. I told her that our children's studies would get affected, but she said there is no future in the village due to the water crisis, he said. Soni claimed that several other women from his village are ready to leave due to water scarcity. There are several families that are not speaking up out of fear of infamy and have moved out of the village silently. But I am an unemployed labourer and there is no scope of arranging water on my own, he claimed. Soni said their village has a handpump and 2,000-2,500 residents are dependent on it. There is a huge crowd at the handpump from morning till night. People hardly get any water from there, he said. PHE official Afzal Amanullah told PTI that they have started work to resolve the issue. The village has a borewell that was dug under the 'Nal, Jal' scheme, but the water level has dropped, and people are not getting adequate water in Devra village. The villagers have demanded that they be provided water connections from the overhead tank in a neighbouring village, he said. Amanullah said that the work of connecting the old pipeline in Devra with the overhead tank is being carried out on Wednesday. We are going to start the water supply through the overhead tank, he said. He said the work to provide tap water to Devra, Hans Nagar and Saket Nagar was earlier sanctioned under the 'Jal Jeevan' Mission. Accordingly, the overhead tank was constructed in Hans Nagar. After connecting the existing pipeline network in Devra to the overhead tank, Soni and other villagers will have better access to water, he said. The PHE is trying to connect all the areas of the village through water supply lines, Amanullah added.
