The intense heat and humidity resulted in deserted streets in several parts of Rayalaseema and CAP, particularly in Nandyal, Kurnool, and a few other Rayalaseema towns. The IMD forecasts a continuation of heat wave conditions in Rayalaseema from April 28th to May 1st. Meanwhile, CAP can expect hot and humid weather with a slight chance of evening thunderstorms during the same period. NETA NATTER | KCR, KTR TREAD ON UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY

All it takes is one good political defeat to make leaders tread paths they would otherwise have not. Take the instance of BRS chief and former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao who visited a regional news channel studio and spent a whopping four hours doing an interview live. Similarly, his son K.T. Rama Rao has been visiting various temples, including the Gadwal Jogulamba temple, as part of the Lok Sabha election campaign and offering prayers. Both developments came as a big surprise to political circles. One, because KCR never took part in any live debate on any regional TV channel in the last 10 years, and KTR, a self-declared atheist, stayed away from temples including the renovated Yadadri temple when it was inaugurated by KCR with the then Cabinet in attendance. Politics, as they say, is a fickle mistress. A BATTLE OF OATHS ENSUES Promises, oaths. These have become the staple of politicians and the current overheated political situation in Telangana is seeing more and more of these each day. While BRS chief K. Chandrashekar Rao is slamming the A. Revanth Reddy government for indulging only in thitlu and votlu (abuse of BRS leaders, and promises on Gods), but doing nothing, his son K.T. Rama Rao has demanded that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy take a vottu on his wife and daughter instead of Gods. Revanth is taking oaths with God as his witness at famous temples in different constituencies during his campaign and saying that he will waive crop loans of all farmers in one go by August 15. But Gods, KTR counters, do not question back and so wants Revanth to take such oaths on his wife and daughter. BRS DOES U-TURN Gone are the days of bemoaning about the country as a whole and how the BRS was the answer that the nation could be waiting for. After the Assembly elections defeat, and with Lok Sabha polls looming, BRS leaders have gone back to their golden oldie, that only it can protect the interests of the state. For instance, in Adilabad, BRS leaders in their speeches say that regional parties like the BRS can only protect the interest of Telangana state, unlike the Congress and the BJP. Former BRS minister Jogu Ramanna is leading the pack, saying only the BRS can talk about the state, and that national parties have no real interest in Telanganas welfare. While it is no longer TRS and is now BRS, for now, the opposition party is betting on the old is gold adage. WE CAN HURL ABUSE AND STILL SEEK SUPPORT? That politicians try to give a spin of their own to suit their political convenience is a given. They live by the dictum that there are no permanent friends and foes in politics, and follow it in letter and spirit. As its true and blue followers, they tend to justify their own party hopping but decry the moves of their opponents. The other day, BJP leader M. Raghunandan Rao found fault with the Congress and especially Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for going to Kerala and calling the CPM communalists there, even as his colleague, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, was hobnobbing with their leaders seeking their support in Telangana state. This left one wondering what would be his opinion on his partys alignment with the Kashmir-based PDP again, which it regularly blames for hobnobbing with separatists. FOOT IN MOUTH FOR NANDYAL MP A slip of the tongue is a common occurrence for everyone, particularly when they are momentarily inattentive. However, in the realm of politics, such slips can pose major problems as Nandyal MP Pocha Brahmananda Reddy found out. After filing his nomination papers, he made glowing references to his YSRC president and Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddys welfare schemes. But, as he wound up, he called on the people to vote for the bicycle symbol, which belongs to the YSRCs arch-rival, the Telugu Desam. Though he tried to make immediate amends, his comment flew through the online world, with folks cracking jokes at him. Clearly, an untimely slip of the tongue cant be corrected even with nine urgent stitches in these days of instant communication. PAWAN DANCES TO THE PEOPLES TUNE Song and dance are part of the political process and candidates facing elections are no strangers to this. And if the candidate happens to be an actor-politician like Pawan Kalyan, then things can quickly get interesting. Using all his histrionic skills, Pawan, contesting from Pithapuram Assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh, alternates between fits of anger and rage. But of late, he has also taken to shaking a leg, given how popular some of his numbers from his movies are. This was on full display at the nomination rally of his Jana Senas candidate from Kakinada Lok Sabha constituency, Tangella Uday Srinivas, the other day. During the rally, Pawan danced to the accompanying drumbeats driving the crowds wild with men and women joining in with enthusiasm. Whether sweating it out in the sun by dancing will get his party votes, however, remains to be seen. Contributions from Vadrevu Srinivas, G. Ram Mohan, L. Venkatram Reddy, P.V. Prasad, Pillalamarri Srinivas.

Southern India's Water Storage Falls to 17% of Reservoir Capacity

The Central Water Commission (CWC) recently released a bulletin regarding reservoir storage levels across various regions of India, revealing that the southern region, which includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, is facing a significant reduction in water storage compared to historical averages. The southern region's 42 reservoirs, monitored by the CWC, have a total live storage capacity of 53.334 billion cubic meters (BCM), but the available live storage is currently only 8.865 BCM, representing just 17% of their total capacity. This figure is much lower than the storage levels from the same period last year (29%) and the ten-year average (23%), indicating worsening water scarcity and potential challenges for irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation in these states. Meanwhile, the eastern region, comprising states like Assam, Odisha, and West Bengal, has shown improvement in water storage levels compared to last year and the ten-year average. In this region, 23 monitored reservoirs with a total live storage capacity of 20.430 BCM currently hold 7.889 BCM of water, representing 39% of their total capacity. Other regions are also facing challenges. The western region, consisting of Gujarat and Maharashtra, reports storage levels of 11.771 BCM, which is 31.7% of the total capacity of the 49 monitored reservoirs. This is notably lower than the storage levels of the previous year (38%) and the ten-year average (32.1%). Similarly, the northern and central regions also show declines in water storage levels compared to historical averages. YSRCP unveils election manifesto: Pension hike, Vizag as executive capital among key promises

YSRCP unveils election manifesto: Pension hike, Vizag as executive capital among key promises YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday released the party manifesto for the coming elections and promised to gradually hike welfare pensions from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 per month and govern the state from Visakhapatnam. The chief minister noted that welfare pensions, which are currently at Rs 3,000 per month, will be raised to Rs 3,250 from January 2028 and subsequently to Rs 3,500 from January 2029. ''Immediately after YSRCP forms the government in 2024, Visakhapatnam will be made the executive capital as the seat of the government. It will be developed as the growth engine for the state,'' said Reddy, addressing a press conference. Further, he vowed that Amaravati will be developed as the legislative capital and Kurnool as the judicial capital. Continuing almost all the schemes introduced in the past five years, Reddy has also raised the financial outlay for some schemes such as Amma Vodi, which has been hiked from Rs 15,000 per annum to Rs 17,000. Amma Vodi is a financial aid scheme for mothers who send their children to school. The YSRCP chief insisted that a political party's manifesto assumed its real meaning only in his government, which treated it as a holy book like the Bible, Quran and Bhagavad Gita. Assembly elections will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls in Andhra Pradesh on May 13.

CAT slaps Rs 50K fine on retired IPS officer for abusing legal process

HYDERABAD: A division bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Hyderabad, comprising Dr Lata Baswara Patne (Judicial Member) and Shalini Misra (Administrative Member), has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Rajnish Kumar Rai, a retired IPS officer and assistant professor at the Indian School of Management, Ahmedabad for abusing the legal process by repeatedly challenging his transfer. The fine is to be paid within one month from the date of the order to Sishuvihar, Women, Children, Disabled, and Senior Citizens Department in Hyderabad district. He was fined for repeatedly challenging his transfer on 12 June, 2017 from Shillong, Meghalaya, to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. Despite initial dismissals of his appeals by the tribunal and subsequent rejection by the Delhi High Court, Rai continued his legal battle by filing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court. CAT observed that Rai, being a highly educated individual and presently an assistant professor at IAM Ahmedabad, ought to have demonstrated better judgment. Rais pursuit of legal remedies across multiple forums, including the Gujarat High Court and the Supreme Court, in regard to the charge memo dated 16 February, 2023, which is currently the subject matter of the SLP before the Supreme Court, was deemed an abuse of the judicial process. The bench highlighted Rais misuse of legal avenues, noting his earlier failed attempts at redressal, including a dismissed original application (OA) at the CAT Ahmedabad Bench and an unsuccessful appeal at the Gujarat High Court. The CAT Bench emphasised that Rai, as a high-ranking officer, should serve as a role model for society. However, his actions were found to be contrary to the principles of judicial prudence and fair legal practice. In conclusion, the CAT Hyderabad Bench dismissed Rais current OA, citing its lack of maintainability, given the ongoing proceedings in the Supreme Court. The imposition of costs of `50,000 serves as a deterrent against the abuse of legal processes by individuals.

APCC chief using YSRs name for political gains: Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy

VIJAYAWADA: Taking strong exception to the remarks made by Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee chief YS Sharmila that Additional Advocate General Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy was behind adding the name of late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in the cases filed by the CBI, the AAG said she was using her fathers name for political gains. Addressing a press conference on Friday, the AAG expressed concern over the allegations levelled against him by Sharmila, despite knowing the fact in the cases filed by the CBI, the circumstances that led to the addition of YSRs name in the FIRs. Recalling the incidents that happened way back in 2011, he said it was the then Congress MLA Shankar Rao and TDP leader Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu, who made the allegations and filed petitions in the courts, which led to the addition of YSRs name in the CBIs FIRs and chargesheets. Sudhakar Reddy urged Sharmila to come up with facts instead of making baseless allegations against him. I am ready for an open debate on this issue. YSR was made an accused prior to my petition in the High Court, which was all about seeking an explanation as to why the CBI failed to add the names of concerned ministers and secretaries, who issued GOs favouring Sandur power company. While the CBI included YSRs name in the FIR on August 17, 2011, I filed the petition in December. Sharmila dragged me into the episode without any knowledge or with an intention to take on her brother YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, he said. The AAG further said he was moved by the plight of Jagan, who was targeted by the Congress government, which used the CBI and Enforcement Directorate for it. Leaving my law practice, I voluntarily filed the petition in the High court questioning the targeted probe of the investigation agency. Sharmilas charges against me and my involvement in the issue are baseless, he asserted.

Sanskrit, sacred conduit to spirituality: Jagdeep Dhankhar

TIRUPATI : Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasised Sanskrits role as a language of divinity, serving as a sacred conduit to spirituality. Speaking at the third convocation of the National Sanskrit University in Tirupati, he highlighted its pivotal position as a cultural anchor in the modern world. Dhankhar stressed the importance of institutions like the National Sanskrit University in bridging the gap between Sanskrits rich heritage and contemporary academic needs. He called for the development of innovative curricula and interdisciplinary research to ensure Sanskrits preservation for future generations. Encouraging students to view Sanskrit education as a journey of self-discovery, he urged them to become ambassadors for its legacy. Dhankhar underscored the need for utilising digital technologies in preserving ancient manuscripts. Despite the extensive literary corpus of Sanskrit, its integration into mainstream education remains limited. Dhankhar attributed this challenge to a colonialist mindset that overlooks Indian knowledge systems. Botcha refutes Goyals claims on no land for railway zone

VISAKHAPATNAM : Refuting the claims of Piyush Goyal that the State government has failed to hand over land for setting up a railway zone in Visakhapatnam, Education Minister Botcha Satyanarayana on Friday said, It is deplorable that a Union Minister has made such remarks. His claims are nothing but lies. Speaking to reporters in the Port City on Thursday, Botcha mocked the Union minister for boasting about developing the country in the past 10 years. It was the NDA government that ruled AP from 2014 to 2019, but the assurance to set up the railway zone did not materialise, he remarked. Asserting that the YSRC government has given land to the Railways for the project, Botcha sought to know why the double engine sarkar in 2014 failed to fulfil the promise mentioned in the AP Reorganisation Act. Why did NDA fail to set up railway zone? Was it because of the inefficiency of the then Chief Minister (referring to N Chandrababu Naidu)? he quipped and recalled that Piyush Goyal was Union Railway Minister at the time. Botcha explained that 52 acres was identified at Mudasarlova in Visakhapatnam and an agreement was also made in this regard. Stating that it was because of the YSRC governments efforts to establish the railway zone that 52 acres, owned by a few B-Form holders and others, was acquired. After joint inspection of the land by the railway officials and GVMC officials, it was handed over to the Railways last year, he said and produced the documents with the signatures of the DRM and the GVMC commissioner. Botcha remarked that a person serving in such a respectable position should speak carefully. Accusing the Centre of not extending support to the State government, the YSRC leader wished for a Central government which would be dependent on the States support. Then only we can raise our voice to get what we want.

Vemireddy did not disclose all assets: Vijayasai

NELLORE : The political atmosphere in Nellore Lok Sabha segment is charged as the general elections draw closer. YSRC Nellore Lok Sabha candidate V Vijayasai Reddy, after meeting the Returning Officer at the Collectorate on Friday, addressed the media regarding the filing of nominations for the Lok Sabha seat. He said, I have filed two sets of nominations. The Returning Officer has accepted my nominations. I am contesting the Lok Sabha election as per the directive of our party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. He alleged that TDP candidate Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy had failed to disclose investments and assets abroad in his affidavit, besides withholding assets within India and shares in various companies. He asserted that Prabhakar Reddys association with government-related companies had rendered him ineligible to contest the election as per Section 9(A). But the Returning Officer rejected the objections raised by Vijayasai Reddy. The Nellore Lok Sabha constituency has captured significant attention in the State as the sitting Rajya Sabha MP and former Rajya Sabha MP are in the fray on YSRC and TDP tickets. In a parallel development, Deputy Mayor Roop Kumar Yadav refuted the allegations of Vijayasai on the scrutiny of TDP candidates nomination. He accused Vijayasai of raising objections out of desperation, and made fake voter complaints against TDP MP candidate Prabhakar Reddy. He called upon voters to elect Prabhakar Reddy, considering his dedication to Nellores development on all fronts. Yadav cautioned the electorate against misleading promises of the YSRC and appealed to them to give their massive mandate to tripartite alliance candidates in the elections.

Jagan, Naidu betrayed people: Sharmila

VIJAYAWADA : Accusing Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of not implementing any election promises made to the people, APCC chief YS Sharmila said both TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and Jagan betrayed the people of the State in the name of Special Category Status (SCS). Addressing election meetings in Tiruvuru, Chintalapudi and Denduluru on Friday, Sharmila alleged that Jagan failed to develop even a single capital contrary to his announcement of setting up three capitals to promote balanced growth. The YSRC government has totally neglected agriculture and failed to generate employment opportunities for the youth. Jagan has cheated the people in the name of total prohibition, job calendar and Mega DSC, she observed. Taking a dig at Jagan for going to the people in the name of Siddham, Sharmila sought to know whether he is ready for making another Rs 8 lakh crore debts, to pledge Special Category Status and betray the people in the name of constructing Polavaram project. Stating that the completion of the irrigation projects taken up by former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy under Jalayagnam is part of the Navaratnalu programme announced by the YSRC, she said the Jagan government has failed to complete even a single project in the past five years. Alleging that the BJP was ruling the roost in the State despite not having a single MP or an MLA, she said Naidu, Jagan and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan had become the slaves of the saffron party. Voting for the YSRC or TDP or JSP is nothing but voting for the BJP, he observed. Vote is your weapon. Take money from whomever offers as it is all your money. But think while casting your vote, she said, adding that the Congress will provide SCS to the State for 10 years if it comes to power at the Centre.

Cross-voting fear looms over MP candidates in Anantapur, Hindupur LS constituencies

ANANTAPUR: The ruling YSRC and opposition TDP-JSP-BJP alliance are facing a peculiar problem in Anantapur and Hindupur Lok Sabha constituencies of the undivided Anantapur district where anxiety over potential cross-voting looms over MP candidates. Amidst the campaign fervour, supporters of the MLA candidates are conspicuously rallying solely for their respective contenders, without endorsing any MP candidates. During campaigns across various Assembly segments, voters, too, have expressed reluctance to support MP candidates for various reasons. Interestingly, MLA candidates have refrained from refuting this stance and instead urging voters to back them while leaving their MP vote choice open-ended. Loyalists commit to voting solely for their partys MLA nominees, considering factors like caste, locality, and past performance when considering the MP candidate. Adding complexity to the electoral landscape, three out of the four MP contenders of YSRC and the alliance parties are non-locals. The incumbent Penukonda MLA and former minister M Shankar Narayana is YSRCs MP candidate from Anantapur, Ambica Lakshmi Narayana, who hails from Hindupur, represents the TDP. For Hindupur, Jolada Rashi Shantamma from Ballari in Karnataka, is the YSRC candidate, while former Penukonda MLA BK Parthasarathi represents the TDP. Shankar Narayana, hailing from Dharmavaram but victorious in Penukonda, faces opposition from a faction of party leaders in his constituency over allegation of mistreatment of party workers. Similarly, Ambica Lakshmi Narayana, considered an outsider due to his Hindupur origins, encounters resistance as he contests from Anantapur. Shantamma, also perceived as an outsider, has been fueling discontent against her candidature. As party leaders and their supporters seek votes solely for their MLA contenders, the silence regarding support for their partys MP candidates raises speculations of potential cross-voting. The non-local factor, coupled with local dynamics, hints at a complex electoral scenario in the two parliamentary constituencies. Andhra Pradesh: Pupils with special needs pick computers over scribes

VIJAYAWADA : Persevering several obstacles, 11 visually impaired and two orthopedically impaired students stood tall in the SSC results. It is worth mentioning that these students undertook the examination without the assistance of a scribe, relying instead on specially designed computer software. All the students were trained on Computers at Rural Development Trust (RDT), Ananthapuram. Government Exams director D Devananda Reddy said that nearly 3,000 students with special needs appeared for the exam, of them around 1,000 students utilised the scribe facility. He affirmed their readiness to facilitate scribe-less exams by offering digital paper to any student with special needs. Among the top performers, Ramannagari Bhargavi from Tenegallu village of Anantapur, an orthopaedically impaired student, emerged as the highest scorer, securing an impressive 429 out of 500 with an overall percentage of 85.8% in this category. Bhargavis outstanding performance was marked by exemplary scores in each subject, with notable achievements in Telugu (87), English (90), Mathematics (83), Science (91), and Social Studies (78). Her consistent excellence underscores her dedication and academic prowess, earning her recognition as one of the top achievers in the examination. Following closely behind, Kuruba Deepika from Madapuram village in Sri Sathya Sai district, a visually challenged girl, showcased exceptional resilience by securing an impressive 415 marks (83%). In addition to Bhargavi and Deepika, several visually impaired students achieved remarkable success in the SSC exams. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Senior Advisor Ram Kamal emphasised that scribes cannot read the minds of visually impaired students, and relying on them may hinder students ability to secure future employment opportunities. He advocated for every student to transition from the conventional scribe system to computers. Visually challenged students Arava Ravi Eswar (387), Challa Nirmala (376) from Ramasagaram village of Sri Satya Sai district, Joharapuram Sainath (361) from Nagaruru of Kurnool district, Bestha Meghana (356) from Kuntimaddi village of Sri Satya Sai district, Gatlu Sravani (353), Vadde Naveen Kumar (352), Kattubadi Mallika(334) from Shabhaspuram village of Kurnool district, Nagarajugari Suma (319) from Kurnool district, Patan Madiha (300) from Kadiri village of Sri Satya Sai district and Sajjala Dileep (262) from Anantapur and Anubolu Guruswamy (274), an orthopaedically impaired, demonstrated commendable performance in the exams showcasing their unwavering commitment to academic excellence. Speaking to TNIE, Commissioner of School Education S Suresh Kumar expressed his satisfaction with the remarkable achievements of children with special needs, highlighting their perseverance, determination, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence. He emphasised that initiatives aimed at fostering self-confidence among these students are crucial and represent a significant step forward in encouraging and providing facilities to support their education. He assured that they would be encouraged to appear for Intermediate exams on computers.

Andhra Pradesh: Six Lok Sabha Seats Never Saw Female Contestant

Visakhapatnam: Since independence, no major political party in Andhra Pradesh has fielded women candidates for the Lok Sabha seats of Anantapur, Guntur, Hindupur, Machilipatnam, Nandyala and Ongole. No woman candidate ever won the polls from these constituencies. From Narasapur and Ongole, two women from lesser-known parties tried for the seats, but failed. Andhra Pradesh has 25 Lok Sabha seats. Four of these are reserved for SC (Scheduled Caste) and one for ST (Scheduled Tribe) candidates. The remaining 20 seats are unreserved. The Election Commissions data shows AP has an electorate of 3,99,84,868, with female voters outnumbering males at 2,02,21,455 and 1,97,59,489 respectively. Women voters have a significant presence in each constituency. However, this presence is not reflected in the Lok Sabha. No woman from Anantapur, Guntur, Hindupur, Machilipatnam, Nandyala and Ongole has ever been elected. Parliament represents the aspirations and concerns of its citizens. However, there have been instances of women candidates entering the fray in other constituencies. In Rajampet and Tirupati, the BJP and TD fielded women candidates, albeit only once. In 2014, Rajampet YSRC contestant PV Midhun Reddy was challenged by Daggupati Purandeswari, representing BJP. She secured 426990 votes but lost the battle. In 1996, TD gave Tirupatis Lok Sabha ticket to Gali Rajasree, who secured 292406 votes but was defeated by Nelavala Subrahmanyam of the Congress. In Narasapur, no major political party has given ticket to women since independence. However, Ganji Purnima, representing the Republican Party Of India (A), contested the polls there, got 865 votes and stood as the 14th runner-up. Similarly, for the Ongole Lok Sabha seat, Gogineni Bharati Devi, representing the SWA party, contested and secured 104703 votes but was defeated by P Ankineedu Prasada Rao of the Congress, who secured 284597 votes. Andhra Pradesh still faces challenges in ensuring adequate representation of women candidates in Lok Sabha elections. Efforts to promote gender equality and encourage womens participation remain crucial for a more balanced political landscape.

Horticulture ryots woes take centrestage in Railway Kodur

KADAPA : An SC-reserved Assembly constituency, Railway Kodur in Annamayya district which was once a TDP stronghold has now become a bastion of the YSRC. While the ruling partys Koramutla Srinivasulu is vying for a fifth term as Railway Kodur MLA, the Jana Sena, which is fighting the elections in an alliance with the TDP and BJP, has nominated Arava Sridhar. Initially, Dr Bhaskar Rao was slated to contest on JSP ticket, but he was replaced following allegations that he was a YSRC covert. The TDP represented the segment from 1983 to 1999. In 2004 and 2009 elections, Gunti Venkateswara Prasad and Koramutla Srinivasulu won on a Congress ticket respectively. Later, Srinivasulu resigned from the Congress and from his MLA post and joined the YSRC. He won the by-election in 2012 and went on to retain the seat in 2014 and 2019 as well. However, despite the two parties holding power for a significant time in the region, voters in Railway Kodur have been facing problems galore. Horticulture is a boon and a bane for the region. The constituency is known for its fruit orchards, yet farmers suffer losses every time there excessive or deficit rain. Farmers cultivate mangoes in 20,000 hectares, guava in 18,000 hectares, papaya in 20,000 hectares, jamun in 8,000 hectares, sapota in 2,000 hectares, and pomegranate in 4,000 hectares. The horticulture crops have a good demand in both Telugu States as well as neighbouring States. Koramutla Srinivasulu, YSRC Earlier, the APSAA juice factory in Anantharajupeta employed thousands of workers and procured produce from horticulture farmers. However, due to mismanagement, it was shut down in 1997 and has not been revived since. For decades, politicians have been promising to revive the industry during every election campaign, but there has been no progress. Both ruling and opposition parties have promised to set up horticulture hubs in Rajampeta and Railway Kodur. But no concrete action has been taken so far. There are no government-owned cold storages, and the existing market yard is dysfunctional, forcing horticulture farmers to rely on private yards and suffer losses at the hands of middlemen every year. Farmers pleas seeking extra rakes for transportation of horticulture crops to other State have fallen on deaf ears. Due to the lack of employment opportunities, many residents are migrating to Gulf countries for a livelihood. Many development works, too, have failed to take off. Construction of the bypass road for Railway Kodur and Galeru-Nagari Phase 2 works have been stalled. Foundation stones were also laid for the construction of a railway under bridge, a retaining wall for the Gunjana River and double-lane road between Chitveli and Koduru, but works have not commenced. The long-pending demand for a road through the forest area from Koduru to Venkatagirimarga has not been fulfilled. Residents say the road will not only reduce travel costs, but also facilitate the transportation of horticulture crops from Koduru and the trade of pattu sarees from Venkatagiri. Arava Sridhar, JSP Even though there is anti-incumbency against the sitting MLA, internal dissidence in the alliance parties could hamper the NDAs poll prospects. Dissent within the TDP brewed with the party replacing Kasturi Viswanadha Naidu, former Railway Kodur in-charge, with Mukka Rupananda Reddy, who recently switched over from the YSRC to the TDP. Viswanadha Naidu and Pantagani Narasimha Prasad, another senior TDP leader, who contested and lost in the previous elections, had hoped for a ticket. Miffed with the TDP leadership for allocating the ticket to JSP, the duo are not participating in election campaigns. Meanwhile, Rupananda Reddy consulted with Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan and recommended his disciple, Arava Sridhar, the Sarpanch of Mukkavaripalli, as the MLA candidate. To pacify Viswanadha Naidu, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu appointed him as the partys State executive secretary. Yet, the politician has stayed away from campaigning. The Mala, Madiga, and Girijana communities have a significant influence over the outcome, followed by Balija, Reddy, Kamma, Raju, Backward Classes and Minorities. In this backdrop, both Koramutla Srinivasulu and Arava Sridhar have been campaigning to seek public mandate. YSRC government has made efforts for the development of Railway Kodur like never before. We have plans to implement many more development works in the region. Few development works which were already initiated would be completed within a short period, Srinivasulu asserted. On the other hand JSP candidate Arava Sridhar criticised Srinivasulu and alleged that though he has been the MLA since 2009, he has not made any efforts for the development of Railway Kodur. He promised that if the NDA comes to power, they would strive to put the constituency on the path of development with the co-operation of the Central and State governments.

Lack of infrastructure haunts Vizags only tribal hamlet

VISAKHAPATNAM : Nestled just 15 kilometres away from the bustling city limits of Visakhapatnam lies Sambhuvanipalem, the sole tribal hamlet in the region. Home to approximately 65 families and 300 to 350 Manne Dora tribals, this village finds itself amid the serene expanse of the Kambalakonda Wildfire Sanctuary reserved forest. Despite its proximity to urban areas, Sambhuvanipalem grapples with a host of challenges, especially in accessing fundamental infrastructure, even within a municipal jurisdiction. The village falls under Bheemili constituency and boasts good road connectivity, with a checkpost positioned three kilometres away to regulate public access. However, residents lament the absence of street lights along this vital stretch, making night time commutes perilous for pedestrians and motorists alike. Villagers also highlighted the dire need for an improved drainage system, citing the sight of open sewage flowing through the streets as a persistent health hazard. V Demudu, the village head, rued, We do not have culverts. The drainage system is very poor. The drainage water keeps flowing openly, causing diseases for both us and our livestock. Despite outward appearances of prosperity, the reality for Sambhuvanipalems inhabitants is starkly different. Employment opportunities are scarce, forcing many to rely on daily-wage work. We built our houses long ago by selling some of our lands, but we hardly have any employment sources, Demudu shared. The forest department offers work, such as forest watchers and employment at the Eastern Ghats Biodiversity Centre. Additionally, villagers cultivate cashew plantations to supplement their income, while during lean periods, they seek daily-wage labour elsewhere. After years of struggle, it should be noted that the village was finally provided with an RTC bus facility. This service aids children in commuting to schools and colleges and enables others to travel for work. Despite having an Anganwadi centre, a primary school, and a community hall, Sambhuvanipalem lacks a primary health centre (PHC). This void forces villagers to travel four to five kilometres for medical needs, exacerbating their plight. Emphasising this burden, the villagers expressed, Having a PHC in the village will benefit us so that we dont have to travel long distances for every minor health issue. Moreover, recent health trends are troubling. A surge in kidney problems residents and persistent virulent fevers have raised concerns about water quality. We have access to water supply all the time, but we have a feeling the causes of health problems have something to do with the quality of our drinking water, Demudu noted. The transfer of a Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) worker, tasked with village upkeep, has compounded their woes. He now only visits the region once a month, which the tribals say is insufficient to maintain cleanliness effectively. Another problem we have is that of erratic power supply. Once there is a power cut, it takes them hours to restore it, Demudu lamented. Political apathy further deepens residents disillusionment. Demanding tangible solutions over fleeting assurances, villagers said, No matter who the politician is or which party he is from, they only come to our village before elections and can never be seen again. We want someone who can solve our problems and not just give us assurances based on votes.

Andhra Pradesh Revival: TDP Pledges to Eradicate Debt and Foster Growth

Andhra Pradesh Revival: TDP Pledges to Eradicate Debt and Foster Growth A senior TDP leader has said the priority of the party is to ''rebuild'' Andhra Pradesh and take the state out of the debt trap by getting rid of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) National Coordinator (Election) and ex-Rajya Sabha MP Kanakamedal Ravindra Kumar said Andhra Pradesh has suffered more losses during the Jagan Mohan Reddy government than during the creation of Telangana in 2014 when resources were shared between the two Telugu states. According to the state government data, the public debt of Andhra Pradesh has increased from 31.02 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2019-20 to 33.32 per cent in 2023-24 fiscal, indicating deterioration in the fiscal health of the state in the last five years. ''Under the rule of Jagan Mohan Reddy (Andhra CM) in the state...our main priority is to get rid of him and rebuild the state which has gone back 20 years,'' Kumar told PTI in an interview. Accordingly, the TDP has returned to NDA tying up with BJP and Pawan Kalyans Jana Sena party (JSP) for both assembly and Parliamentary polls to safeguard the existence and the interest of Andhra Pradesh, he said. ''The reason behind the alliance is to ensure not to divide the anti-government vote,'' he noted. Claiming that the rise in corruption and anti-incumbency sentiments against the YSRCP government will favour the TDP this time, the party leader said the TDP is highlighting these issues in the campaign along with the six promises it plans to implement if voted to power. The TDP's six polls promises are: create 20 lakh jobs for youth and provide monthly unemployment allowance of RS 3,000 till they secure a job; give Rs 15,000 a year to every school-going child, three free gas cylinders a year; Rs 20,000 annually to Annadata scheme farmers; Rs 1,500 per month to women aged 18 to 59 under Aadabidda Nidhi Scheme and free bus service to women. Asked if the TDP was playing into the hands of BJP as the saffron party might get the support of the regional parties if either wins, Kumar said, ''There is a possibility. But we are supporting BJP at the cost of the future of over 5 crore Andhra people.'' ''The state development is the main consideration for the party, we don't want to consider central politics at this stage. Priorities will change only when things are set right in Andhra Pradesh, not now,'' he said. In the simultaneous 2024 polls to be held on May 13, TDP is contesting Lok Sabha polls from 17 seats, JSP in six and BJP in two. In the case of the assembly poll, TDP is contesting from 144 seats, JSP in 21, and BJP in 10 seats In the 2019 elections, the TDP exited NDA over the alleged lack of enough central funding and demand for special status for Andhra Pradesh. Kalyan withdrew support to the TDP in 2018. Expressing concern over the rising public debt of the state government, Kumar claimed that the debt has risen multifold in the last five years due to ''misrule'' and ''mis-administration''. The state finances are in such bad shape that the government is taking loans from the RBI to release pensions to its employees. ''The loss sustained by Jagan Mohan Reddy's regime is more than the loss incurred due to the state bifurcation,'' he claimed. The TDP leader said that the YSRCP has failed to fulfill several promises including special status to the state, made during the 2019 elections. The CM had promised that if YSRCP gets 25 MP seats from Andhra Pradesh then it would get a special status. ''But after coming to power, he forgot that promise...he visited Delhi not less than 31 times in the last five years. He did not make any demand from the Centre for fear of arrest and threat. He is on the ventilator of the central government,'' he claimed. He further claimed that the central government's schemes have not been implemented in Andhra Pradesh because the state government has not provided a matching grant. ''The central funds have been diverted in the state,'' he said. The CM has also failed to create a new capital for Andhra Pradesh even after completion of ten years of sharing Hyderabad as common capital with Telangana as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, he said. Adding to people's woes, the state government has recently come out with a new 'land title law' under which the original property document of a buyer will be vested with the state government and a revenue authority will be constituted to resolve the disputes and not civil courts, he claimed. ''This is a dangerous Act and takes away the rights of the people,'' he added.

Andhra Pradesh's Revival: TDP Focuses on Rebuilding and Eradicating Debt

Andhra Pradesh's Revival: TDP Focuses on Rebuilding and Eradicating Debt A senior TDP leader has said the priority of the party is to ''rebuild'' Andhra Pradesh and take the state out of the debt trap by getting rid of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) National Coordinator (Election) and ex-Rajya Sabha MP Kanakamedal Ravindra Kumar said Andhra Pradesh has suffered more losses during the Jagan Mohan Reddy government than during the creation of the two Telugu states in 2014 when resources were shared with Telangana. ''Under the role of Jagan Mohan Reddy (Andhra CM) in the state, our party's priorities have changed. Our main priority is to get rid of Jagan Mohan Reddy and rebuild the state which has gone back 20 years,'' Kumar told PTI in an interview. Given the changed priorities, the TDP has returned to NDA tying up with BJP and Pawan Kalyans Jana Sena party (JSP) for both assembly and Parliamentary polls to safeguard the existence and the interest of Andhra Pradesh, he said.

No big strides: Scorching heat, voters apathy a cause in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Despite efforts of the election commission and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to increase voting percentages in this general election, the numbers did not make strides in Bengaluru North parliamentary constituency, which has the highest number of voters in Karnataka. While many voters braved the heat, some others did not even bother to come out and vote. Segments of voters in slums and apartment pockets opined that voting is a waste of time, as once the election is over, elected candidates would never bother to come and meet the voters and ask about their welfare. Muneer Khan, 77, who brought his 70-year-old wife on a scooter, to a polling station in HAL ward, said it is appalling to see voters not keen on exercising their rights. Mufeeda Begum, another senior citizen, after casting her vote, said she has now the right to question her MP. Aishwarya, a young voter, stated that people can expect change only if they come out and vote. Syed Raheem, a social worker who arranged free autos to pick up and drop voters, said, The scorching heat forced many voters to stay at home and avoid voting. We have arranged over two dozen autos to ferry voters to booths from areas like LBS Nagar, Jyothi Nagar, Gaffar Layout, Reddy Palya, and Islampur in HAL Ward. We also went and asked voters to come out, but the response was poor, said Raheem. Further, S Ramesh Babu, BJP General Secretary, KR Puram Assembly, said, many voters in the North segment also have families and friends in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. With the polling day, falling on a weekend, many decided to take a long break. BJP North Lok Sabha segment president S Harish held BBMP and election commission officials responsible for the low turnout as he listed anomalies like name deletion and transfer of voters to other areas.

Karnataka: Gowda slams Congress for manifesto promises

PADUVALAHIPPE(HASSAN): Hitting out at Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge for allegedly misleading people by releasing a bogus manifesto,JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda said on Friday that there is no sanctity for promises made. He also questioned whether Rahul and Kharge are the PM or CM to make such promises. They are only ordinary Congress members, he told reporters after voting. Gowda also termed the guarantee card an ordinary pamphlet. The Congress has fooled poor people by distributing the pamphlet, fearing defeat, Gowda said, adding that the party had not released the pamphlet in Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, or any other state. The pamphlet should have the signatures of the CM or his deputy, and educated people do not believe in such a manifesto, he said. Gowda also alleged the Congress had distributed the pamphlet with the aim of defeating JDS HD Kumaraswamy and Prajwal Revanna. The JDS has lodged a complaint with the authorities concerned for misleading people, he added. Taking exception to Kharges statements in Kalaburagi that people can put mud and materials used for final rituals on his body instead of defeating the Congress candidate, he said there was no necessity to make such emotional statements at a public function.

Mudiraj Community to Reject BRS Candidates in LS Polls

Hyderabad: The Mudiraj community, which holds a significant presence in 30 Assembly segments in the state, has decided to vote against the BRS in the Lok Sabha elections to express its anger against the party for its failure to fulfil its demands when it was in power. The Mudiraj community is primarily angry with former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao for not fulfilling his promise of including their community in the BC-A category as against BC-D and for not including new members in 5,000-odd fishermen cooperative societies in tune with their population. The community said it would work for the party, which assures them to fulfil their genuine demands. The Medak, Mahbubnagar, and Chevella Lok Sabha constituencies have the highest concentration of the Mudiraj population. The BRS government in its first term had formed a nine-member Cabinet Sub-Committee to look into the grievances of the Mudiraj community. The committee, after a lot of deliberations with members of the community, submitted a report to the government, seeking the implementation of the Fishermen Protection Act and implementation of GO No 6, which assures to include new members aged above 18 in fishermen societies. But the then BRS government did not fulfil the demands, said Dr. Choppari Shankar Mudiraj, president of the Telangana Mana Mudiraj Mahasabha. The community was also not happy over Rao ignoring them politically in his second term. After Etala Rajendar, who hails from the Mudiraj community, was forced to quit, Rao did not included anyone from the community in his Cabinet. Dr Shankar Mudiraj said it was the first time in the states history, including that of united Andhra Pradesh, that the state cabinet did not feature a member from Mudiraj community. Highlighting the BRS neglect for the Mudiraj community, Dr Shankar Mudiraj said the BRS chief had given a single corporation to a Mudiraj leader. Even in the last Assembly elections, he said the BRS had not given a single Assembly ticket to a community member though it demanded the inclusion of its representatives by holding 30 Atma Gaurava Sabhas and a public meeting at Parade Ground in Secunderabad. The community demanded 20 Assembly seats from each political party. The Congress gave three seats and the BJP gave seven seats to Mudiraj members in the Assembly polls, said the community elder Shailendra Shivayya Mudiraj. Rao allotted five acres of land at Plot Number 1 in Kokapet and assured Rs 5 crore for the construction of a building. Except for Bhumi Puja at the site, there was no progress and no amount was released yet. The Congress government, however, assured the Mudiraj community that it would set up a finance corporation for the welfare of Mudiraj members when the community elders met Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy recently. The community is seeking the government to set up the corporation with a corpus fund of Rs 10,000 crore, looking at the large population of the community. The community claims that it makes up 14 per cent of the population in Telangana state. According to Dr M Santosh Mudiraj, GO No. 98 of 1964 identifies 32 castes in united Andhra Pradesh as fishermen communities, which includes the Mudiraj community. Among 5,000 fishermen cooperative societies, the Mudiraj hold a major share among their four lakh members. The community sought the protection of their fishing areas from others and sought the strict implementation of the Fishermen Protection Act.
