Tribals in Andhra's ASR seek reinstatement of GO No. 3
VISAKHAPATNAM: Tribal communities in Alluri Sitarama Raju district observed a bandh on Friday, demanding the reinstatement of Government Order (GO) No. 3, which earlier ensured 100% reservation for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates in teacher recruitment in scheduled areas. The protest saw wide participation, with shops closed voluntarily in places such as Araku Valley. Tourist destinations including the Tribal Museum, Padmapuram Botanical Garden, and the Coffee Museum remained shut, while roads across the region wore a deserted look. Protesters blocked roads and raised slogans urging the government to restore the provisions under GO No. 3. They recalled the promise made by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu during an election rally, where he assured 100% reservation in government jobs for tribals by reviving the special provisions under GO No. 3. In response, ASR District Collector AS Dinesh Kumar issued a statement appealing to the tribal communities to withdraw the bandh and cooperate with the government. He explained that GO No. 3, issued on January 10, 2000, by the Andhra Pradesh Tribal Welfare Department, provided for 100% reservation for local ST candidates in teacher recruitment within scheduled areas and included a 33% sub-reservation for ST women. He said that this policy was implemented in about 11 General and Special DSCs conducted after the issuance of GO No. 3, with all posts being filled by eligible local ST candidates. However, the Supreme Courts Constitution Bench, in a verdict delivered on April 22, 2020, declared GO No. 3 unconstitutional. Following the courts decision, the State government was required to re-evaluate and revise its recruitment policies in agency areas, he explained. The Collector added that in the recently announced Mega DSC-2025 recruitment, GO No. 3 was not considered due to the Supreme Court ruling, and reservations were allotted as per the general roster. The government is sincerely exploring legal alternatives to ensure justice for tribals without violating the SCs directions, he said. Tribal Welfare Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani reiterated the governments commitment to the welfare of tribal communities. The coalition government is working on introducing an alternative Government Order to replace GO No. 3. Young unemployed tribal youth should not be misled by the YSRCPs political narrative, the Minister said. Out of the 16,437 DSC posts, 2,024 have been allocated specifically for tribals. She said Is it reasonable to ask for the cancellation of Mega DSC? It was the previous YSRCP government that nullified GO No. 3 and failed to fill even a single teacher post. She stated.
Andhra temple wall collapse: Preliminary enquiry reveals structure constructed illegally
VISAKHAPATNAM: A preliminary enquiry into the retaining wall collapse at Simhachalam, which claimed seven lives during the Chandanotsavam festival on April 30, has revealed that the structure was constructed without formal approvals and in violation of the temples master plan. The three-member committee appointed by the Andhra Pradesh government to investigate into the incident completed its initial inquiry in Visakhapatnam on Friday and has since departed for Amaravati. Based on our findings so far, everything was done in a hasty manner, based merely on verbal instructions, said S Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary of the MA&UD Department and chairman of the inquiry committee. The committee also includes Inspector General of Police Ake Ravi Krishna and Engineer-in-Chief (FAC) of the irrigation department, Venkateswar Rao. Contractor claims pressure to build wall before Simhachalam tragedy Panel plans to get extra inputs from devotees Addressing the media on Friday, Suresh Kumar stated that the construction of the retaining wall lacked official permission and violated norms outlined in the Simhachalam master plan. We have completed the preliminary investigation. It was learnt that due process was not followed in the construction. Everything appears to have been carried out informally, he said. The team interacted with temple priests, Agama experts scholars, and other stakeholders during the course of the inquiry. Agama experts, represented by Vaidiks, flagged a critical lapse pointing out that the wall was erected without consulting traditional Agamasastra practitioners, a clear deviation from established religious construction norms. Soil and structural samples were collected from the collapsed site for further analysis. The committee also plans to gather extra inputs from devotees who were present at the time of the incident. Officials noted that the works under the PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) Scheme were originally scheduled to be completed by August 2024. However, the committee flagged concerns over delays and systemic inefficiencies in implementation. The enquiry also highlighted a lack of coordination between the Endowments and Tourism Departments. This coordination gap needs to be addressed and we recommend escalating this integration issue to state-level leadership for resolution, the committee stated in its observations.
Probe into TDP leader Veeraiahs murder case enters final phase
ONGOLE: The investigation into the murder of TDP leader and former MPP of Naguluppalapadu mandal, Veeraiah, has entered its final phase, with Prakasam police obtaining key information on suspects directly and indirectly involved in the case. According to sources, the focus has now shifted to apprehending the prime accused who have been absconding since the April 22 murder. Investigators have identified a hotel near Mangamuru junction, reportedly operated by a Chinna Ganjam native from Bapatla district, as the main hub for the conspiracy and its execution. Police found a businessman from Ammanabrolu and another individual from the Ongole outskirts played crucial roles in the plot. A political leader allegedly extended financial aid to the operation. In addition to a motor vehicle accessories shop, the hotel served as a meeting point and food supply base for the assailants. Two men from neighbouring SPSR Nellore are believed to have directly carried out the stabbing. Police said they were contacted by a key conspirator from Ongoles Koppolu area, known for his sand business links. Money was reportedly routed to the Nellore duo through the political leader, and investigators are currently questioning them to trace the remaining accused. Search is underway, an official said.

Former Basara temple priest Ganesh Sharma Dravid appointed 71st pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam
NIZAMABAD: The appointment of Ganesh Sharma Dravid as the 71st pontiff (Sri Guru Sathya Chandrasekhara Saraswathi) of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam has drawn attention in Basara, Nirmal district. Vedic priest Kandikota Naveen Sharma from the Sri Gyana Saraswathi Devi temple welcomed the appointment and recalled his past association with the new pontiff. Ganesh Sharma, originally from Annavaram in Andhra Pradesh, served at the Basara temple between 2022 and 2024. He was appointed by the state Endowments department after Vedic training and spent much of his life in Hyderabad. Social media posts recently highlighted his earlier role as Rigveda Asthana Vidwan at Basara. Naveen Sharma said Ganesh Sharma had strong knowledge of the Rugveda and maintained good relations with temple staff. We were close colleagues. None of us expected him to become the successor of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, he said. The Basara temple, about 36 km from Nizamabad, regularly attracts devotees from across the Telugu states, especially during Vasantha Panchami and examination season. Many bring their children for the Aksharabhyasam ritual. Some also observe 41-day deekshas at the temple. There is a belief that the idol of Saraswathi was installed by Vedavyasa Maharshi and that Lord Nrusimha Saraswathi once visited the temple. With Sharmas connection to Basara now public, temple authorities expect increased footfall.

Despite efforts to streamline transportation, traffic congestion was reported at toll gates across Eluru, Krishna, and Guntur districts due to the heavy movement of vehicles. Crowd present while PM Narendra Modi restarted the construction works of Amaravati at Velagapudi on Friday; A kid wears PM Narendra Modis mask while he is on his way to the venue where PM Narendra Modi restarted the construction works of Amaravati on Friday. In West Godavari district, Collector Chadalavada Nagarani flagged off a convoy of 150 buses from the old bus stand in Bhimavaram. Around 7,500 people departed from various parts of the district to participate in the public meeting. Nagarani said the arrangements were made as per the instructions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. MLAs and local officials monitored the travel process and ensured essential amenities were available for participants. Police and civic staff were deployed along key junctions to assist with traffic and logistics. HYDERABAD: Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil convened a meeting of Irrigation Ministers of four states on May 7 to discuss the publication of the award of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal 2 (Brijesh Kumar Tribunal). The Jal Shakti minister will chair a meeting with ministers of water resources of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to discuss on the report-cum-award of Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-2, a communication received by the state officials from the Jal Shakti Ministry on Thursday said. However, the Irrigation department officials were surprised to receive the letter as the matter was sub judice. AP and Telangana filed a case in the Supreme Court and the case hearings were still in progress. Besides, the Union government gave a fresh terms of reference (ToR) to the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal over reallocation of 811 tmcft allocated to the combined AP by the Bachawat Tribunal. The cross examination before the Tribunal on the fresh ToR issued by the Jal Shakti Ministry was still continuing. We are expecting that the Central government may try to resolve the water disputes through consultation process and try to publish the Tribunal award in the gazette, a senior official of Irrigation department told TNIE. It may be recalled that Brijesh Kumar Tribunal, which started its proceedings in July 2007, submitted its draft verdict on December 31 2010 and final verdict on November 29 2013. The Brijesh Kumar Tribunal, at 65 per cent dependability estimated that the average yield in Krishna river to be at 2,578 tmcft. Of this, the Tribunal allocated 1,005 tmcft to the undivided AP, 907 tmcft to Karnataka and 666 tmcft to Maharashtra. The united AP objected to the award and filed a case in the Supreme Court. Subsequently, the newly formed Telangana too impleaded in the case stating that when the Tribunal gave its verdict, Telangana was not a separate state and now the separate states arguments should be heard before implementing the award. Due to litigation, the award was not published in the gazette in the last 11 years. The award of the first Tribunal (Bachawat Tribunal) came into effect in 1976. The next Tribunal will be constituted after 2050.

During the hearing, senior counsel Vikas Singh, representing Dhanunjaya Reddy, urged the court to issue immediate orders to protect his client from arrest. PM Modi relaunches Amaravati capital project, calls it the dream taking shape of Swarna Andhra
VIJAYAWADA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rekindling the long-pending dream of Andhra Pradeshs greenfield capital, Amaravati, on Friday at Uddandarayunipalem, where he had laid its foundation stone nine years ago, described it as a land where tradition and progress intertwine. Addressing a massive gathering, Modi said, I dont see just a city, but a dream taking shape. A new Amaravati, a new Andhra. He highlighted the publics enthusiasm, noting Amaravatis Buddhist legacy of peace and its potential as a powerhouse for Vikasit Bharat. Beginning his speech in Telugu, the Prime Minister paid homage to Andhras heritage, invoking Goddess Durga Bhavani and expressing joy at the occasion. Referring to the foundation stone laying, the inauguration of projects worth nearly Rs 60,000 crore, and Amaravatis revival, Modi said, This isnt merely concrete construction but the foundation of Andhras aspirations and Vikasit Bharats vision. He recalled Amaravatis historical significance as the capital of the Gods, now becoming the states capital, calling it a divine sign for a Swarna Andhra that will fuel the vision of Vikasit Bharat. Amaravati isnt just a city; its the force to transform Andhra into a modern, progressive state, he said, envisioning it as a hub for IT, AI, green energy, clean industries, education, and healthcare. He pledged central support for building the necessary infrastructure. Praising Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Modi revealed he had studied Naidus initiatives during his tenure as Gujarats Chief Minister and applied those lessons in his governance. Naidu leads the nation in technology, he said, lauding him as the ideal leader for future tech projects. Invoking former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Raos vision for a developed Andhra, Modi urged unity to make Amaravati the growth engine of Vikasit Bharat. Chandrababu, Pawan Kalyan, we must fulfil NTRs dream together, he said. Taking a swipe at the previous regime, Modi remarked that the obstacles to the Praja Rajadhani, for which he laid the foundation in 2015, have now been cleared under Naidus leadership. He assured that the capital infrastructure, including the High Court, Assembly, Secretariat, and Raj Bhavan, would be built on priority. Modi highlighted Indias infrastructure strides over the past decade, positioning the country among the fastest-developing nations. Andhra has significantly benefited, with thousands of crores allocated to railway and road projects, enhancing both inter-district and interstate connectivity. These developments, he said, will enable farmers to reach markets faster, boost industries, and promote tourismsuch as easier access to the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati via the Renigunta-Naidupeta highway. He noted that Andhras railway infrastructure has transformed, with the states railway budget increasing from under Rs 900 crore (20092014) to Rs 9,000 crore today. This has enabled 100% electrification, the operation of eight Vande Bharat trains, and the introduction of modern Amrit Bharat trains. Over 750 railway bridges and underpasses have been constructed, and more than 70 stations are being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Scheme. Emphasising the economic multiplier effect of infrastructure, Modi said it increases demand for cement, steel, and transport, and creates thousands of jobs for Andhras youth. He reiterated the NDAs focus on the poor, farmers, youth, and women, citing Rs 12 lakh crore spent on fertilisers and modern seeds, along with Rs 5,500 crore in crop insurance for Andhra farmers. The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi has delivered Rs 17,500 crore to lakhs of farmers, while the Polavaram project, a joint central-state effort, will transform the lives of millions of farmers. Modi celebrated Andhras contributions to Indias space programme through Sriharikota and announced a new DRDO defence facility, Navadurga missile range in Nagayalanka, which will strengthen national security. He emphasised unity as Indias true strength, citing Ekta Malls like the one in Visakhapatnam that promote handicrafts and the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative. He commended Naidus announcement of hosting International Yoga Day on 21 June, pledging to attend the event in Visakhapatnam to promote yoga globally. Under Chandrababus leadership, well break world records, he said, thanking the state for the invitation.

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education, IT, and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, declared that even a hundred Pakistans could not harm India, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the nations ultimate weapon against aggression. Speaking at an event marking the resumption of Amaravatis construction, Lokesh condemned Pakistans recent actions, particularly the Pahalgam terror attack, accusing it of making a grave mistake by targeting innocent lives. Pakistan cannot uproot even a blade of grass on Indian soil, he asserted, warning that Modis decisive leadership could erase Pakistan from the world map. Lokesh claimed Pakistans military was in chaos, with personnel resigning or fleeing, calling it a testament to Modis formidable influence. He also criticised the previous Andhra Pradesh governments ruinous 20192024 tenure, alleging it had deliberately stalled Amaravatis development due to personal animosity towards Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He accused the former regime of wasting five years on a three-capital proposal without laying a single brick, thus hampering the states progress. Highlighting the Amaravati movements resilience, Lokesh noted its 1,631-day struggle, with participation from children to the elderly under the Jai Amaravati banner. He detailed the sacrifices made, including 270 farmer deaths, arrests, police brutality against women farmers, and 3,000 illegal cases filed against protesters. Saluting the farmers unwavering spirit, Lokesh called Amaravati a peoples capital that no conspiracy could suppress, crediting Modi for its foundation and asserting that no force could halt its development. On domestic policy, Lokesh hailed the central governments caste census decision as a bold, historic step by Modi to empower marginalised communities, addressing decades-long struggles for social justice among backward classes. Lokesh announced that Amaravatis construction, relaunched under Modis guidance, marked unstoppable progress for Andhra Pradesh. He outlined decentralised development plans, including the Polavaram project, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Bhogapuram Airport, and CNG plants in Prakasam. Reflecting on the post-bifurcation challenges of 2014, he praised Naidu for balancing welfare and development, with Amaravati chosen as the capital through consensus and built on farmers sacrifices. He said regions like Rayalaseema had become electronics and automobile hubs, Godavari districts aqua hubs, and North Andhra pharma and IT hubs. Lokesh underscored the double-engine government of Modi and Naidu, saying the NDAs 94% seat share in the 2024 elections reflected public trust. He said Modis supportthrough initiatives like the Visakhapatnam Railway Zone, NTPC Green Energy, and the Nakkapalli Bulk Drug Parkdemonstrated his commitment to Andhra Pradesh. Lokesh described Modi and Naidu as powerful engines driving development and welfare. On economic progress, Lokesh revealed that in 10 months, the state had secured Rs. 8 lakh crore in investments, generating 5 lakh jobs. A mega DSC notification for 16,347 posts had been issued, alongside major projects including NTPC Green Energy (Rs. 1.85 lakh crore, 57,000 jobs), ArcelorMittal in Anakapalli (Rs. 1.36 lakh crore, 55,000 jobs), and BPCL in Ramayapatnam (Rs. 97,000 crore, 3,000 jobs). He said investments from LG Electronics in Tirupati, renewable energy in Kurnool, Kadapa, and Anantapur, Reliance CNG in Prakasam, and pharma and IT in North Andhra were aimed at uplifting all districts. The government, he added, aimed to create 20 lakh jobs in five years, signalling a robust economic vision.
