MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government has decided not to ask Pakistani citizens from the Hindu-Sindhi community to leave the state, as most of them are either staying on long-term visas or have applied for Indian citizenship. These individuals will be given protection in India. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that Pakistani citizens belonging to the Hindu-Sindhi community will not be asked to leave the state. According to official data, there are a total of 5,053 Pakistani citizens currently residing in Maharashtra. Of these, the highest number2,458are in Nagpur, followed by 393 in Jalgaon, 293 in Navi Mumbai, 290 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, 117 in Amravati, and just 14 in Mumbai. In the wake of the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack, the Central Government has decided to ask Pakistani citizens to leave India by April 30 of this year. In Maharashtra alone, there are over 5,000 Pakistani nationals residing on long-term and SAARC visas. The state government is currently identifying and verifying these individuals as part of the ongoing process. There are many Pakistani citizens from the Sindhi community staying in Maharashtra on long-term visas. Some have already applied for Indian citizenship. These Hindu-Sindhi Pakistani citizens will not face any issues in the state. However, those who are in India and Maharashtra on short-term visas must leave the country within the next 48 hours or face deportation. We have already asked such Pakistani citizens to leave, said CM Fadnavis. He further mentioned that a list of these individuals has been prepared and submitted to the Central Government. We are monitoring and tracking Pakistani citizens in Maharashtra who are here on both short-term and long-term visas. Local police stations are in contact with them and are keeping a close watch, he added. CM Fadnavis also clarified that no Pakistani citizen currently residing in Maharashtra is untraceable. This clarification comes after Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde previously claimed that 170 Pakistani citizens were missing in the state. Sometimes, officers provide incorrect briefings to ministers, leading to such statements. Its not the fault of DCM Eknath Shinde, but rather a case of incorrect data provided by officials. Therefore, we have decided not to release any precise data until our verification process is complete. We are still sanitizing the data, CM Fadnavis said.

CJI Sanjiv Khanna recommends appointment of Justice B R Gavai as next Chief Justice
NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on Wednesday recommended to the Centre the name of Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the next CJI. Justice Gavai, the second senior-most Supreme Court judge after the incumbent CJI Khanna, is set to become the 52nd CJI on May 14 after the retirement of CJI Khanna on May 13. Justice Gavai, who was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, would have a tenure of over six months as the CJI. He is due to retire on November 23, 2025. CJI Khanna, who was sworn in as the 51st CJI on November 11 last year, recommended to the Union law ministry to appoint Justice Gavai as the next CJI. The retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65 years. Born on November 24, 1960 at Amravati, Justice Gavai was elevated as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003. He became a permanent judge of the high court on November 12, 2005. Justice Gavai has been a part of several Constitution benches in the apex court which delivered path-breaking verdicts. He was part of a five-judge Constitution bench which in December 2023 unanimously upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370 bestowing special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Another five-judge Constitution bench, of which Justice Gavai was a part, annulled the electoral bonds scheme for political funding. He was a part of a five-judge Constitution bench which, by a 4:1 majority verdict, gave its stamp of approval to the Centre's 2016 decision to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination currency notes. Justice Gavai was part of a seven-judge constitution bench, which by a 6:1 majority held that states are constitutionally empowered to make sub-classifications within the Scheduled Castes, which form a socially heterogeneous class, for granting reservation for the uplift of castes that are socially and educationally more backward among them. A seven-judge Constitution bench also having Justice Gavai ruled that the arbitration clause in an unstamped or insufficiently stamped agreement between parties was enforceable as such a defect was curable and did not render the contract invalid. In an important verdict, a bench headed by Justice Gavai laid down pan-India guidelines and said no property should be demolished without a prior showcause notice and the affected must be given 15 days to respond. He is also heading the bench which is hearing matters related to forests, wildlife and protection of trees. He had joined the bar on March 16, 1985 and was the standing counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Nagpur, Amravati Municipal Corporation and Amravati University. He was appointed as an assistant government pleader and additional public prosecutor in the Bombay High Court's Nagpur bench from August 1992 to July 1993. He was appointed as a government pleader and public prosecutor for the Nagpur bench on January 17, 2000. According to the memorandum of procedure -- a set of documents guiding appointment, elevation and transfer of high court and Supreme Court judges -- the law minister writes to the CJI to name his or her successor. The MoP says the senior-most judge of the apex court is considered fit to hold the office of the CJI and the views of the outgoing head of the judiciary have to be sought at an appropriate time.

Tribal youth arrested for revenge killing linked to cow slaughter dispute in MP's Betul
BHOPAL: Unimaginable torture and humiliation of a tribal youth in November 2023, allegedly over a cattle smuggling issue, led to a brutal revenge killing a year later in Betul district, Madhya Pradesh. After months of investigation, the police uncovered the murder plot and arrested seven tribal youths on Sunday. The accused allegedly kidnapped and killed 22-year-old Rinkesh Chouhan on November 30, 2024. They then burned his body using plastic, tyres, and diesel, leaving only a burnt skull and a few bones in the dense Arjun Gondi forest in Betul district. The murder was linked to the torture of 20-year-old tribal youth Ashish Parte in November 2023. Chouhan and another man had allegedly stripped and hung Parte upside down before beating him with a stick and belt. The attack was reportedly over cut money extorted from cattle smugglers transporting cattle from Betul to Amravati in Maharashtra. While Chouhan carried out the brutal attack, his friend filmed the entire incident on a mobile phone and later uploaded the video. The video went viral three months later, in February 2024, sparking protests by tribal groups and the opposition Congress in Betul and Bhopal. The protests also led to the transfer of the then Superintendent of Police, Siddharth Chaudhary. According to police sources, Ashish Parte was deeply traumatized by the incident and nearly took his own life, but his family intervened in time. Following the viral video, Chouhan was sent to judicial custody, while his friend, who had filmed the attack and had a criminal history, was charged under the National Security Act (NSA). Parte, however, planned revenge and waited for Chouhan to be released from jail. Parte came to know that Chouhan had come to visit a fair in the Multai area on November 30, 2024. Further knowing that Chouhan was staying at the house of a common friend, Parte and six other aides planned to avenge the insult. They abducted Chouhan and beat him badly. They later took him to the Arjun Gondi forests, killed him, and then set the body ablaze, reducing it to skeletal remains, including the skull, Betul Superintendent of Police Nischal Jharia told TNIE on Monday. In December 2024, forest department staff discovered the skeletal remains and a human skull in the forest. Police launched an investigation, and on December 21, 2024, Chouhans family reported his sudden disappearance. A hand bracelet recovered from the site helped police identify the remains. Later, DNA analysis confirmed that the remains belonged to Chouhan. We subsequently grilled Ashish Parte and his friends, who finally admitted having killed Chouhan and having burnt his body to destroy the evidence -- for avenging the November 2023 torture-insult. All seven accused have been arrested, the SP-Betul said
