ECI serves notice to INPT, asking it why the party shall not be delisted

AGARTALA: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has served a show cause notice to Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) asking it to make a written representation as to why the party shall not be delisted, a government release said. Former rebel-turned-politician Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl had floated the INPT way back in 2002 to unite the tribal political forces, but it (INPT) merged with Tipra Motha Party (TMP) in 2021. As per records of the Commission, the INPT party did not set up any candidates at the general elections to the House of the People and to the State Legislative Assembly of Tripura held in 2018 and 2023 respectively, as well as any bye-elections for the last two general elections. It is self-evident that the said party has ceased to function as a political party, said the show cause notice circulated by the Information & Cultural Affairs (ICA) department on Wednesday. The ECI proposes to withdraw the recognition of the party from the list of registered political parties. Before the Commission decides to proceed to withdraw the recognition of the party, it is proposed to give the party an opportunity of making representation/showing cause if any as to why the proposed action should not be taken, it said. Therefore, the INPT is called upon to make a written representation to the ECI in this regard, if it so desires. The representation, if any, should be duly accompanied by an affidavit from the president or the general secretary of the party with supporting documents on which the party proposes to rely upon and should reach latest by 21.08.2025, it said. The date of hearing for the party has been scheduled on August 28 at 3 pm in the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Tripura, Agartala, it said. If no reply is received from the party by the aforesaid date, it will be presumed that the party has nothing to say in the matter and appropriate action will be taken without any further communication to the party, the notice added.

81 AAI-run airports suffer Rs 10,853 crore loss in 10 years; 22 now non-operational

NEW DELHI: Eighty-one airports operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have suffered a cumulative loss of Rs 10,852.9 crore in past 10 financial years. Today, 22 of these airports have become non-operational. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol presented the data in the Rajya Sabha on August 4 while replying to a query posed by Congress MP Jebi Mather Hisam. The MP wanted to know details of Indian airports operating at a loss and if there were any plans to shut those with negligible flight operations. She also wanted to know if any financial aid was being offered to underperforming airports. Data released for the years from 2015-2016 to 2024-2025 reveals the 81 airports across the country have cumulatively suffered a Rs 10,852.9-crore loss. Delhis Safdarjung airport has suffered the most, incurring a loss of Rs 673.91 crore. Agartala airport with a Rs 605.23-crore loss stands second, while Hyderabad, with Rs 564.97 crore, Dehradun with Rs 488.01 crore, and Vijayawada with Rs 483.69 crore in losses figure among the top five loss-making airport nationwide. Asked for a reason, a senior Aviation Ministry official said Safdarjung airport, though the main airport in the national capital, is now a thing of the past, as it is not actually operational for commercial flights presently. It serves to ferry VVIPS to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, he said. Among other major loss-making airports are Bhopal (Rs 480.43 crore), Aurangabad (Rs 447.83 crore), Tirupati (Rs 363.71 crore), Khajuraho (Rs 355.53 crore), Imphal (Rs 355.19 crore). Airports closed for operations The airports which have become non-operational are Donakonda, Daparizo, Jogbani, Muzaffarpur, Raxaul, Deesa, Chakulia, Dhalbhumgarh, Khandwa, Panna, Shella, Aizawl, Thanjavur, Vellore, Nadirgul, Warangal, Kailashahar, Kamalpur, Khowai, Asansol, Balurghat and Malda. Mohol also said the Regional Connectivity Scheme Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (RCS-UDAN) was launched on October 21, 2016, to boost regional air connectivity from unserved and underserved airports in the country. The scheme provides Viability Gap Funding to airlines to bridge the gap between operational costs and expected revenues. The budget allocated for the RCS-UDAN for the financial year 2025-2026 is Rs 300 crore, the minister said. This provided financial incentives and concessions to the airlines from the Central and state governments, Union territories and airport operators to lower operational costs and thus promote their operations, he added. A total of 92 unserved and underserved airports, including 15 heliports and two water aerodromes have been operationalised under the scheme, he pointed out.

1,300 families take shelter as floods swamp Tripura; waterlogging paralyses Agartala, IMD warns of more rain

AGARTALA: Around 1,300 families have taken shelter in government-run relief camps across West Tripura district following incessant rainfall over the past two days that has triggered severe flooding in several parts of the region. Incessant rainfall over the past two days has led to severe flooding across various parts of West Tripura district. As a result, nearly 1,300 families have been shifted to government shelter homes for safety. The state government is closely monitoring the flood-affected areas, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said in a Facebook post on Sunday. The Chief Minister added that the district administration has deployed teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil volunteers, and other agencies to assist in rescue and relief operations. Several localities in Agartala have also experienced heavy waterlogging, prompting authorities to activate water pumps to drain out the accumulated water. Officials are urging residents in flood-hit areas to follow government advisories and relocate to designated safe zones, the CM said. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Tripura between June 1 and June 5, 2025. The forecast also warns of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated pockets, particularly in Dhalai and West Tripura districts. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are also likely in some areas. The IMD has advised residents to take precautions, including avoiding areas prone to waterlogging and landslides, refraining from unnecessary travel, and adhering to traffic and weather advisories. According to officials, arrangements for food, shelter, medical care, and drinking water have been made at nearly 25 to 30 government shelters across the state. Food, drinking water, medical assistance, and all necessary amenities are being provided at the shelters, they said. Tripura CM Manik Saha also visited flood-affected areas in Agartala and relief camps to review the ongoing relief efforts. According to eyewitnesses, teams comprising SDRF, NDRF, and Aapda Mitra volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected population. Temporary shelters have been set up in schools across the district to accommodate those displaced by the floods, the Chief Minister said. He added that Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Manipal is coordinating closely with the district authorities to expedite relief measures. We're doing everything possible to ensure everyone's safety and to provide the necessary aid, he said during a visit to the affected areas. In addition, the India Meteorological Centre in Agartala has warned of potential impacts such as poor visibility due to intense rainfall, traffic congestion, flash floods, waterlogging, and the possibility of landslides or mudslides. People have been advised to stay away from vulnerable areas and take all necessary precautions. Elsewhere in the Northeast, heavy rainfall on Friday led to severe waterlogging in Guwahati, affecting areas such as Rukminigaon, Beltola Survey, Hatigaon, Geetanagar, Anil Nagar, Lakhimi Nagar, Jatia, Maligaon, and Panjabari.

Rain disrupts normal life across Tripura and Manipur, authorities issue red alert for three districts

AGARTHALA: Heavy rain threw normal life out of gear across several parts of Tripura on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more intense showers over the next 24 hours. The state capital, Agartala, recorded 25 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, according to officials. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by squally winds reaching speeds of 5060 km/h across the state due to a deep depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal. In response, a red alert was issued for Sepahijala, West Tripura, and Khowai districts on Thursday. An official from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirmed that while all eight districts recorded rainfall, no major damage to property or loss of life has been reported. Despite intermittent downpours, there is no report of flooding. However, normal life is partially affected with people preferring to remain indoors, the official said. District administrations have been put on alert and are prepared to respond to any emergency arising from potential flooding. Meanwhile, flight operations at Agartala Airport were impacted on Thursday, with two Kolkata-bound flights cancelled due to poor weather. Heavy rain floods Imphal, rivers rise across Manipur Heavy rain lashing Manipur for the past two days has disrupted normal life in several parts of the state, particularly in the capital city Imphal, where waterlogging was reported from multiple areas on Friday. Officials said traffic movement was affected in Kakwa, Thangmeiband, and Sagolband areas in Imphal West district due to severe water accumulation. The water levels of key rivers, including the Imphal and Serou rivers, have also risen significantly, prompting concern across the valley. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast heavy rainfall across various parts of the state, especially in the southern districts of Chandel, Churachandpur, Pherzawl, and portions of Kakching and Thoubal. According to the IMDs Meteorological Centre in Imphal, the border town of Moreh recorded the states highest rainfall on Thursday with 102 mm, followed by Kamjong (96 mm), Chandel (76 mm), and Ukhrul (60.8 mm). In response to the situation, the Deputy Commissioner of Senapati district issued a public notice citing a forecast from the National Weather Forecasting Centre warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds through Friday. The notice urged residents to remain alert and avoid all non-essential travel and outdoor activities, especially near flood-prone zones, rivers, and steep slopes, until conditions improve. Meanwhile, Chandel District Police issued an advisory cautioning people against fishing or venturing near the Chakpi riverbanks, where water levels have surged due to continuous downpours. Authorities across the state remain on high alert as heavy rainfall is expected to continue through June 3.

Assam to act against Aadhaar holders out of NRC

GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Sunday announced crackdown on Aadhaar card holders who did not apply to get their names included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Talking to the press while campaigning for the panchayat elections on Sunday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, We will launch a major drive within next two to four days against those who obtained Aadhaar cards and are living in Assam but did not apply for the NRC. He said the state government has already stopped issuing Aadhaar cards to those who did not apply for the NRC. However, before we took this step, many had obtained Aadhaar cards in Assam without applying for the NRC, he added. The chief minister also said that the state government had prepared an action plan to detect and drive out the illegal immigrants who entered Assam over the past few years. In September last year, Sarma stated that four Assam districts had more Aadhaar card holders than the projected population. The four districts are Barpeta and Dhubri in lower Assam, and Morigaon and Nagaon in central Assam. Among these, Dhubri shares a border with Bangladesh. We found that 103.74% people were issued Aadhaar cards in Barpeta, 103.48% in Dhubri, 101.74% in Morigaon and 100.68% in Nagaon. Surely, suspected immigrants have managed to procure Aadhaar cards, Sarma had said. Later in December, the state government decided that all applications for Aadhaar will be rejected unless the applicant or the family had not applied for the NRC. The NRC of 1951 was updated in Assam in deference to the 1985 Assam Accord and with the cut-off date of March 24, 1971. Over 19.06 lakh of the 3.3 crore applicants were left out of the NRCs complete draft published in August 2019. Meanwhile, three more persons were arrested in Assam for alleged anti-India remarks over the Pahalgam terror attack, taking the total number of such arrests to 16. The arrested trio were identified as Dadhichi Dimple alias Dimple Bora, Tahib Ali and Bimal Mahato. 4 Bangladesh nationals arrested in Agartala Security forces have arrested four Bangladeshi nationals from Agartala railway station for illegally entering India, officials said on Sunday. Meanwhile, the BSF has stepped up patrolling along the India-Bangladesh border amid high alert following the Pahalgam terror attack.
