Weekend workshops in Bandipur shift focus from tiger chase to forest awareness
BENGALURU: The forest department is working on steps to improve safari tourism in Karnataka. It is now organising workshops on weekends for tourists at Bandipur Tiger Reserve (BTR) to create awareness and sensitise people on man-animal conflicts. The workshop has gained popularity not just among Karnataka tourists, but also those from other states. Tourists are now demanding similar workshops in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gujarat, forest officials said. People usually visit forests to see a tiger. But that is not all that a forest offers. We started weekend workshops to make tourists understand forests better. During the sessions organised by the departments naturalists, tourists learn from ants to elephants, trees, plant species, insects and even minor forest produce. The workshops aim is to create awareness on biodiversity and ecology, BTR Director S Prabhakaran told TNIE. The department has so far conducted workshops for 24 batches, where people as young as eight to a group of retired government officials have attended them. Tourists are not just from Bengaluru, but from across India, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and West Bengal. The workshops are held in Kannada and English. People come here during weekends for three days and two nights, and after safari, there is nothing much to do. We thought of utilising this time to create awareness and sensitise people. The workshop is now a success. We are working on adding more features to it. The aim is to make people appreciate wildlife and to empower them to reduce conflicts in their own way, said a senior forest official. The workshop is being conducted only in Bandipur now, but gradually it will be extended to all tiger reserves in the state so that more people are sensitised, he added. He said they had tried multiple ways to shift the focus from tiger tourism, but saw little success. But workshops seem to be working. Former forest official and well-known environmental expert KM Chinnappa used to hold similar training for some people. We adopted the same idea, he added.
KPSC denies paper leak in Gazetted Probationers exam; JDS calls explanation fabricated
BENGALURU: Following allegations that the question paper of Gazetted Probationers Mains Examination conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) was leaked much before the exams began on May 5, KPSC issued a statement that there was no leakage of the question paper. There were rumours on social media that the essay paper was leaked at the BBMP Composite PU College in Kasturbanagar, Mysore Road. A detailed report was obtained. KPSC has adopted multi-level security measures to prevent leakage of question papers, to conduct the exam in a transparent manner. The question papers were taken in a sealed box, a sealed metal trunk and sealed tamper-evident covers were used, KPSC said in a press statement. However, JDS slammed KPSC, stating that it has not learnt any lessons from the past and the public service is playing with the lives of candidates. In a social media post on Tuesday, JDS said, The corrupt Congress government has failed in conducting KPSC exams. The exam paper leak stands testimony to this. KPSC has not learnt any lessons from its past mistakes. Replying to KPSCs explanation that the question paper bundle was open due to mechanical transportation, JDS said that it was a fabricated story.
Told him this case would jail him: Tapal Ganesh, the man behind Reddys mining conviction, speaks out
BALLARI : The man who waged legal battle for the last 19 years in bringing the accused to justice in Obulapuram illegal mining case, activist Tapal Ganesh, has many reasons to be satisfied. He said that the CBI courts verdict is a lesson to all those politicians who are involved in illegal activities. Tapal said he lost his grandfathers land in 2006 due to illegal mining. Janardhana Reddy acquired over 4,000 hectare of land in the interstate border of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in the name of mining, he said. In 2006 Tapal filed a case in the Supreme Court and in 2009 Obulapuram Mining Company was closed as per the SC order. In 2011, the CBI arrested Reddy from his Ballari house. Tapal said that the court verdict has given him new hope. Its a lesson to all who misuse power. As per the CBI documents, more than 23 lakh tons mining ore was worth Rs 884.13 crore. The court verdict has raised questions over his political career, he said. He told the TNIE, In 2006 I filed case against him. I told him that Obulapuram mining case will put him in jail. Now that has happened. My ancestors are from Obulapuram and Mallapangudi area near Obulapuram. Janardhana Reddy and his associates illegally acquired land for mining. After he became minister in 2008 using his power, he changed interstate borders and in 2009 after I submitted evidence to the SC the Obulapuram Mining Company was closed. An inquiry committee set up by the then Andhra Pradesh government led by K Rosaiah, Reddy was mentioned as culprit. But he wriggled out due to changing political equations. After CBI arrested him in 2011, he protested his innocence. Now the CBI special court has convicted him. If he goes for appeal to higher court, I will again fight him, said the activist.
Justice HN Das reviews SC survey in Kolar, urges dignity in self-identification of caste names
KOLAR: Justice Dr HN Nagamohan Das and his team visited various places in Kolar and evaluated the caste survey process, on the second day of the exercise, on Tuesday. The team along with Kolar Deputy Commissioner Dr MR Ravi and senior officials visited houses in Ambedkar Nagar, Gandhinagar, Tamaka and Gaddekannur in Kolar. Speaking to media, Justice Das said that the names of the Scheduled Communities should be clearly mentioned in the survey. The communities have been given the opportunity to change their caste names voluntarily. We change the names of states, cities, circles, etc. Similarly, communities are enduring humiliation due to castes given in some century. Therefore, the communities to which they belong should clarify the caste name. This will make it possible to identify those who are socially, economically and educationally backward, he said. Social Welfare Department Commissioner Rakesh Kumar said that 42 questions have been included in the caste survey of Scheduled Communities. A comprehensive survey of the socio-economic development of the Scheduled Castes is being conducted with the approval of the commission. After the house-to-house survey in the first phase is completed on May 17, a special camp will be organized in the respective gram panchayats from May 19 to 21. In this special camp, mainly wage labourers and those who have migrated to other places will be surveyed. He said that documents like Aadhaar, family ration card and other documents can be submitted and registered within the booth. In the third phase, an opportunity has been provided to enter information for the survey online. The original caste can be clearly stated by entering the RD number of the Aadhaar card and caste certificate. In the 2011 census, 43 percent of the people have mentioned Adi Karnataka, Adi Dravida, Adi Andhra. Similarly, the app has been prepared to mention the sub-caste name clearly, he said. Scheduled Caste Coordination Member Kantharaj, Deputy Commissioner Dr. MR Ravi, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. Praveen P Bagewadi, Superintendent of Police Nikhil, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Mythri and others were present.
BJP MLA Gali Janardhan Reddy faces disqualification after conviction in mining case
BENGALURU: Mining baron and BJP MLA Gali Janardhan Reddy may lose his legislative assembly membership in view of his conviction in the illegal mining case by a CBI court in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The state assembly is expected to issue a formal order in this regard once it gets a certified copy of the conviction order. The CBI court convicted Reddy in the OMC mining case. As per Section 3 of the Representation of the People Act, sitting MPs or MLAs convicted in any case and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years will be disqualified from the House from the date of conviction. The disqualification will continue for further six years after his release. Government sources said that action can be initiated against the MLA once the certified copy of the court order is received by the House. Since he (Reddy) is a member of the legislative assembly, a formal order has to be issued. We will issue the order only when we get the certified copy from the court. Once we issue the formal order, it will be applicable from the date of the judgment, the sources said. Though there was a provision in the RP Act, which allowed convicted legislators to continue as members of the House if they appealed before the court within three months, the Supreme Court in 2013 declared it as unconstitutional, they said. The sources, however, said that if Reddy goes to court and gets bail before the assembly gets the certified copy of the conviction order, he may not be disqualified. Assembly Speaker UT Khader is abroad and is expected to return to Bengaluru on Wednesday. In 2024, the High Court of Karnataka granted bail to Karwar MLA Satish Krishna Sail in illegal export of seized iron ore cases in which he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment. In October, 2024, the special court sentenced him to seven years imprisonment. In November, he got bail from the HC. The sources said that Sail had moved to the court and got bail even before the assembly received the certified copy of his conviction order. State BJP leaders are waiting for more details on the court order against Reddy. A senior BJP leader said that if an MLA or MP is disqualified based on court orders, the party will disassociate from him/her. However, the party high command will take a decision on such matters, the leader added. The list of accused A-1: BV Srinivas Reddy (OMC MD, convicted) A-2: Gali Janardhan Reddy (BJP leader and former minister, convicted) A-3: VD Rajagopal (former IAS officer, who served as director of mines, and vice-chairman and MD, AP Mineral Development Corporation, convicted) A-4: Obulapuram Mining Company Private Limited (convicted) A-5: Rao Lingareddy (former AD of Mines Department, deceased) A-6: Srilakshmi (IAS officer, discharged by the high court) A-7: Mehfuz Ali Khan (Janardhan Reddys PA, convicted) A-8: B Kripanandam (former IAS, acquitted) A-9: P Sabitha Indra Reddy (former minister, acquitted) FORMER LOKAYUKTA HEGDE WELCOMES CBI COURTS VERDICT BENGALURU: Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde has welcomed the CBI court order convicting sitting MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy, sentencing him to seven years of imprisonment. Karnataka Lokayukta under Justice Santosh Hedge had submitted a detailed report in 2011 that exposed the magnitude of the illegal iron ore mining in Ballari and directly implicated Reddy in the scam. I am satisfied with the judgment. Not only I, those who worked with me then, too, would be satisfied now. The government exchequer has incurred a huge loss because of Janardhan Reddy, Justice Hedge told media persons at his residence in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Justice Hedge, who had called Ballari district, the erstwhile hub of illegal iron ore mining and the political stronghold of Reddy, as the Republic of Ballari, said, As far as I knew, no government laws were applicable in Ballari. Even if there were murders, there were no cases registered. Many families have suffered because of him.

Mysore jail warder suspended, arrested for abusive video against CM Siddaramaiah
MYSURU: A warder at Mysore Central Jail was suspended for six months, and also arrested by Bettadapura police after a video surfaced on social media, in which he makes abusive remarks against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The video was allegedly shot by prison warder Madhu Kumar, and went viral on social media platforms, prompting the jail superintendent to suspend him and order a departmental inquiry. The video was allegedly made as a reaction to a recent incident where the CM publicly rebuked an additional superintendent of police during a public meeting in Belagavi. Throughout the 5 minute-33 second-long clip, Kumar, a ex-serviceman, uses vulgar and derogatory language and insults the CM and his family members. He says that while a politicians power lasts only for five years, a government employees power is for 35 years. The chief minister, being an advocate, should know how to behave with an officer. If this is the case involving an ASP, what would be the fate of a constable? he asks. He also warns Siddaramaiah against targeting the police, stating that the personnel are feeling let down by the chief minister. Kumar claims in the video that the government has not deposited salaries of prison staff on time, making it difficult for them to pay monthly instalments. He also accuses the CM of taking MUDA sites as a land loser, and criticises him for supporting minorities and attacking the RSS. Referring to the recent mob attack on Udayagiri police station here, Kumar says the law and order situation in the state has collapsed. Since Kumar shot the video on April 28 and sent it to a friend to share online, the jail superintendent suspended him and ordered a probe. Kumar said he is ready to lose his job. Earlier in the day, enraged over the video, Congress workers led by DCC president BJ Vijaykumar and KPCC spokesperson M Lakshmana staged a protest in front of the jail, demanding that Kumar be immediately arrested, since his abusive language is against the Karnataka Civil Reserve (Conduct) Rules. Lakshmana also accused Kumar of abusing Congress leaders through his Facebook account, which is against the State Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, and appealed to the DCP (Law and Order) to register an FIR.

Home minister: Will go beyond policing to heal Coastal Karnatakas fractured society
BENGALURU: Retaliatory killings in Coastal Karnataka have become a cause for concern for the government and law enforcing agencies. The murder of Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty a few days ago is the fourth such incident in the region in the past few years. Acknowledging the limitations of conventional policing in preventing such incidents, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara said, This isnt just about law and order anymore. It is about healing a fractured society. The government plans to set up a coastal task force and involve influential community and religious leaders, in its efforts to restore peace. We will go beyond policing, he said, emphasising the need for sustained dialogues and reconciliatory efforts. We will not involve rabble-rousers, but use respected voices, who can help ease tensions, he added. Investigations revealed that each killing appeared to be meticulously premeditated, raising urgent concerns over deepening communal divide and bloodshed in the region. Experts and civil society leaders warn that the situation, if goes unchecked, may destabilise the social fabric of Coastal Karnataka, and Shettys murder may not be the last. For peace to prevail, civil societys role important Former DGP Dr Ajai Kumar Singh echoed this sentiment. If people expect the police alone to ensure peace, it may not be possible. But if civil society -- religious, political, and community leaders -- take a stand against it, peace can prevail, he said, citing Mahatma Gandhis intervention during violence in erstwhile Calcutta during the Partition. Police can only do so much. A collective societal effort is essential, he added. What is happening in Coastal Karnataka is unacceptable, said peace activist Fr Cedric Prakash from Gujarat, though he hails from Coastal Karnataka. Violence in any form must be rejected by all. India, thanks to Mahatma Gandhi, gave the world the principle of ahimsa. It is believed that the retaliatory killings started after the murder of a youth from a minority community in the region, a few years ago. While each killing further polarised communities, law enforcement agencies have struggled to prevent such incidents. Fr Prakash told TNIE that efforts must be made to restore peace from the ground up. Real, sustainable peace will only take root at the grassroots when we begin to see one another as brothers and sisters, rejecting all forms of demonisation and discrimination, he said. Former Union minister CM Ibrahim said, Yes, everyone must ensure that peace prevails. I, for one, am willing to help in any way possible.
