AICC eyes Christian face for Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee
KOTTAYAM: As moves for a change of guard at the helm of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) gather pace, all talk is now centred around naming a person from the Christian community to the position. Even as Pathanamthitta MP and former Kottayam DCC president Anto Antony has emerged as a strong contender, the AICC leadership has reserved its decision, at least for the time being, as a consensus remains elusive. In addition to Anto, the names of former Kannur DCC chief and Peravoor MLA Sunny Joseph, and senior leader and Chalakkudy MP Benny Behnan are actively being considered. The AICC seems keen to take into account the concerns of the Christian community, especially the Catholic Church, over inadequate representation in the party leadership, especially after the era of A K Antony and Oommen Chandy. The Church has aired its concerns on multiple occasions. While Anto has the backing of the AICC leadership, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra blessings, Sunny is the preferred nominee of the Syro-Malabar Church. The party leaderships stance has not gone down well with the Church. Apart from the fact that its nominee is being overlooked, Anto does enjoy good relations with the Church, say Christian leaders. Meanwhile, there is a strong feeling among senior leaders that both Anto and Sunny will come up short when pitted against CPMs seasoned Pinarayi Vijayan and BJPs new generation leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar, prompting them to back an extended term for K Sudhakaran. Meanwhile, the Church is viewing reports of Anto enjoying the support of Changanassery archbishop Thomas Tharayil as mere propaganda aimed at sidelining its nominee. While trhe Church initially planned to release a statement debunking the rumours, it ultimately decided against it, preferring not to intervene in Congress politics. Antos links to the Pentecostal Church have also created hesitation among some Church leaders. At the same time, a section in the Church believes that Antos elevation as KPCC president could potentially alter the perception of the Congress being pro-Muslim. We dont believe that Antos position would benefit the Church in any way. However, it will definitely change Congress image of Muslim appeasement. Nevertheless, it may not attract Christian votes en masse to the Congress, said a senior priest. Amidst the confusion and discord, the AICC leadership has decided to postpone the official announcement. While there were rumours that Anto would visit Oommen Chandys tomb in Puthuppally and address the media following his appointment as KPCC president, no such announcement has been made yet. The Congress leadership has been grappling with a dilemma over the potential change in leadership, torn between accepting the Churchs recommendation and sticking with an Ezhava representative to prevent a shift in the communitys support base towards the BJP. However, the leadership is of the view that the Ezhava community has been adequately represented over the past decade, with leaders such as V M Sudheeran, Mullappally Ramachandran, and K Sudhakaran except for a brief period under M M Hassan.
Book released on Bengalurus affair with BMTC rides
BENGALURU: Bengalurina Bussina Kathegalu (Bengalurus Bus Stories), which captures the memories associated with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses, was released on Monday. A collaborative effort of the EQUIMOB (Inclusive Cities Through Equitable Access to Urban Mobility Infrastructures for India and Bangladesh) project, Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bengaluru Bus Prayanikara Vedike (BBPV) and Samvada, the book brings alive memories of double-decker buses, love for bus radio when there were no mobile phones, bus bonds and others. When we discuss about Bengaluru, the first thing that comes is the Information Technology, the citys infamous traffic, Silk Board Signal. But we hardly get to see anything related to BMTC buses, Bengalurus lifeline, said Prajwal, a PhD Scholar from ISEC and Utrecht University, who coordinated for the project from EQUIMOB. Like Kolkata or other cities, Bengaluru didnt have trains for local commute. All we had was the BMTC (then Bangalore Transport Service). BMTC buses, which played a pivotal role in Bengalurus making, have largely remained neglected in its development story. Except for some scenes in a Kamal Hassan movie and in other Kannada movies, BMTC buses are hardly seen, Prajwal said. Though every one of us has travelled in BMTC and has a lot of memories associated with it, it is not being recorded, he said, adding that the book has stories associated with the bus, he added. The organisers said the e-book will be uploaded on Equimob website soon, and hard copies will be distributed among the BBPV community organisations and various government departments.

Over 50 KAS candidates miss exam after last-minute hall ticket distribution by Karnataka PSC
BENGALURU: More than 50 candidates could not write the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) mains exam on Saturday as the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) changed its deadline for collecting hall tickets and issued them just a few hours before the exam. The candidates now want the state government and the High Court of Karnataka to intervene and ensure justice to them. Earlier this week, the high court allowed around 120 students to write the exam. These candidates were earlier left out because of some confusion in the Kannada translation of a question paper for the preliminary exam held in December last. After the court order, KPSC said these candidates must submit their applications along with fees by 3 pm on May 2, and that hall tickets could be collected in person at 5.30 pm at its office in the city. However, with no clarity on the 5.30 pm deadline, at 9.40 pm on Friday, KPSC issued a notification on its website, stating that the candidates must collect hall tickets by 12 midnight. The exam was to be held at 10 am the next day. This sudden change confused many candidates. Some of them, who were in Bengaluru, rushed to the KPSC office in the rain. But they were stopped at the gate. When they began protesting to let them in to collect their hall tickets, police resorted to a lathicharge. The candidates, however, continued their protest till they were allowed to collect the hall tickets one by one, forcing them to be at the KPSC office till 4 am. Though KPSC stated that it followed the court order, the candidates said the manner in which the matter was handled was unfair. They pointed out that more than 5,000 candidates had approached the court, but only those who were part of the petition were allowed to write the exam. They said, There are 65,000 Kannada-medium candidates. If only a few are helped, is that the social justice promised by the chief minister? Many candidates appealed to the governor to stop the exam immediately to prevent injustice to them. Fathima Begum from Kalaburagi said the hall tickets were issued just hours before the exam, causing immense stress not just to those who got last-minute approval from the court, but also to those who had cleared the prelims. Some candidates being favoured deliberately Many candidates felt that this was done deliberately to manipulate the results and favour certain candidates. Srikant P from Bidar said if KSEAB could conduct exams for SSLC and PU students smoothly, there was no reason why KPSC should falter, unless there was something to hide. The commission should be completely overhauled and those responsible for this must face action, he added. Madhav Gowda, a candidate from Hassan, sought to know if KPSC is under the control of the state government. The way the commission handled the situation showed lack of accountability on the part of it, he said.

Jharkhand Minister sparks controversy over alleged fake degree, Pakistani links
RANCHI: Minority Affairs Minister Hafizul Hasan, who had hit the headlines recently for his 'Sharia over Constitution' remark , has landed into controversy once again for obtaining a PhD degree from a fake university and his alleged links to Pakistan-based networks. BJP alleged that the institution -- Bharat Virtual Open Educational University, which has conferred PhD degree to Hasan, has no legal status to confer degrees. Sharing photographs on X on April 26, Hasan said, Today, at the convocation ceremony of Bharat Virtual Open Education University, I was awarded an honorary doctorate (PhD) for my work in the social sector. This is a proud moment for me, my family and the people of my area. According to state BJP spokesperson Ajay Shah, this institution is run by some people from the Muslim community and has no legal existence. Shah also claimed that this fake university shows its affiliation with Central Christian University, Africa. After a thorough investigation it was revealed that the Chancellor of this university, Dr. Usman, was awarded the title of Professor by an institution in Islamabad, Pakistan, he said. Based on this revelation, Shah made a serious allegation that the entire network of the degree of Minister Hafizul Ansari appears to be linked to Pakistan. Minister Hafizul Ansari obtained his PhD from a bogus institution called the Bharat Virtual Open Educational University, which has no legal status to confer degrees, said Shah. Citing Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956, Shah asserted that the university is not recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Government of India, or the Jharkhand government. (PhD) , pic.twitter.com/rdY0niFeT9 Hafizul Hassan (@hafizulhasan001) April 26, 2025 According to Shah, Ansari resorted to acquiring the degree after failing to qualify through recognised Indian universities. He described the alleged university as a paper institution run by individuals promoting Sharia law, with no official standing under Indian law. He demanded a high-level inquiry into the alleged Pakistan connection to uncover the full extent of any wrongdoing and ensure strict legal action if violations are found. Hafizul Ansari, a senior leader in Jharkhands ruling coalition from Santhal Pargana, currently holds a key ministerial portfolio. Known for his influence among minority communities, Ansari has often been in the spotlight for his outspoken views on socio-religious issues. Earlier, talking to a News Channel, Hafizul Hasan had said, For me, Sharia is more important. We keep the Quran in our chest and the Constitution in our hands... Muslims Walk with Quran in their chest, and the Constitution in their hands. Okay! so we will first hold the Sharia and then the Constitution. Later, he issued a warning that Muslims could take to the streets and resort to violence if provoked, making a veiled reference to the amended Waqf Act. In a video clip Hasan could be seen warning using the phrase maar kaat hoga to emphasise the potential unrest, saying, Muslims are showing patience, but if disturbed, we will take to the streets, and violence will erupt there will be chaos.

BENGALURU: While the state and Central governments are working to identify and protect heritage sites in Karnataka, the responsibility of the people, especially locals, is much bigger. Experts echo the lack of sense of ownership, respect and pride among people and government officials alike. Recently, after a video went viral showing a meat stall at the tomb of Krishnadevaraya, the legendary ruler of the Vijayanagar dynasty, in Anegundi, the Department of Archaeology Museum and Heritage (DAMH) filed a complaint against the accused. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) says the site is a state-protected monument. Then, how was this allowed to happen? Madhusudhan KR, researcher and member of the Karnataka Itihasa Academy, says, The incident came to light after videos taken by tourists went viral. A similar incident was reported from Doddaballapur taluk in Bengaluru Rural, where a 5th century Ganga dynasty stone inscription went missing, during construction of a temples compound wall. This cannot continue. State and national heritage should be protected. A bigger concern is of sites being disrespected, destroyed, defaced and damaged. It all started with the cinema industry, which romanticized the etching of messages in stone. Now people have immortalized it. Some go to heritage sites with cameras, some others with chisels and paint. Couples started writing messages, drawing graffiti and symbols. Just imagine, you are visiting a tombstone or a hero stone or fort, and you are greeted with a painted love note. Not just governments, even locals should come forward and take stern action to control the menace to bring such people to book. In some places, people spit on fort walls, urinate or throw food items. This is seen in areas outside fort walls and spaces surrounding them, said an ASI official, seeking anonymity. Although government departments blame manpower and funds shortage for their inability to protect the sites, experts suggest the adoption of alternatives. Citizens should be involved and made watchdogs. They should be made aware of the sites and their importance, made partners in protection and offered incentives for protecting them. ASI and DAMH officials should also work with panchayats. In a district, if 30 per cent of sites are protected, 20 per cent are on the verge of being lost and 50 per cent have already been lost. With this being the state of affairs, a lot more needs to be done, says Madhusudhan. Experts say the government should now shift its focus from the already popular heritage sites of Hampi, Belur, Halebidu, Pattadakal, Aihole and Badami to lesser known destinations. But so far, its only been lip service. Dr Jayasimha P, senior research fellow, Mythic Society, says the Brahmagiri region near Chitradurga is much richer and needs urgent attention. The region gains importance as around 100 years ago, Dr MH Krishna from Mysore Archaeology, under the then kings, had said Brahmagiri holds the key to questions of human evolution. Government departments are carrying out excavation work and have found artifacts older than the Paleolithic period. Already, many important artifacts have been lost over time, and people know very little about this place. Similarly, there is a 1,100-year-old stone inscription in the Panchalingeshwara Temple in Begur temple, near Electronics City, which is named Bengalura. Another expert working with ASI says, requesting anonymity, that while the Central government and other states are finding artifacts and heritage structures to display the glory of King Ashokas Mauryan Empire, Karnataka is doing nothing. There are stone inscriptions of King Ashoka in Koppal, Maski, Brahmagiri and near Chitradurga. These show that his empire touched Karnataka and he had trade relations here. They need to be protected now, before it is too late, the expert says, adding that not just sites, even murals and ecological heritage need protection. In Lal Bagh (Bengaluru), the mango trees planted by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan are well-protected. But the same ecology in Srirangapatna is ignored. Similar is the case with the Nallur Tamarind Grove, which is a biodiversity site now. Over time, the number of trees has reduced. There are also many heritage banyan trees on village roads, which are becoming highways now. Many heritage doors, walls and windows of heritage properties, like in Lakkundi, are being lost to urbanization, the expert points out. DAMH officials admit that many stone inscriptions, especially hero stones, have been lost to urbanization. People destroy the stones by using granite for foundation or in residential/commercial construction. Many such stones are being found on the outskirts of Bengaluru, Tumkuru, Ramanagara, Kolar and surrounding areas, but are being lost because of lack of knowledge about them, the official adds. Experts say the way ahead to protect heritage sites is for the government to get aggressive and involve people. They cite Tamil Nadus example of not just using archaeology to build narratives, but also as assets. This year, there are 22 excavations taking place in Tamil Nadu, but only two in Karnataka. Excavations in Tamil Nadu are being done in the open for people to see and ask questions. There is a guide stationed at the site to explain the works and the site. There is a people connection established there. A similar method is also adopted in Vadnagar in Gujarat, where guides tell stories during the excavations. An emotional link with people is established, which is lacking here. In Karnataka, where DAMH has started excavation works in Firozabad, near Kalaburgi South Indias first hammam (communal bath space) and water system the people connect is missing, an expert says. Meera Iyer, convener, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), says a lack of awareness and appreciation among people is the reason for heritage sites being in a poor condition. It is seen that wherever people realize the importance of sites and appreciate them, they are protected. The government should also be more careful in protecting them and encourage people to come forward to do so. The government should also be more judicious in utilizing funds and resources. People should also take an interest in finding out whats around them and its importance. GROUND ZERO SITUATION UDUPI Story of neglect Prof T Murugeshi, retired Associate Professor, Ancient History and Archaeology, MSRS College, Shirva, Udupi district, says Karnatakas coastal region has many sites. But the ASI and DAHM have totally neglected coastal Karnataka with respect to documentation, survey, protection and conservation. Only a handful of sites in this region are protected. No Members of Parliament, MLAs or district authorities are concerned about the rich cultural heritage of this region. Important rock art sites like Buddhanajeddu, Gavali and Avalakki Pare in Udupi district, Karur, Sonda in Uttara Kannada district and Pandavarakallu near Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada, speak of the unknown prehistory of coastal Karnataka but the authorities are totally blind, Murugeshi says. BELAGAVI A fort in ruins The situation in Belagavi is no different. Experts and locals point out that one of the most famous and historic forts Kittur Fort is in ruins. The state government has made plans to revive it and organise Kittur Utsav as an annual affair. They say the government should also give importance to lesser-known sites, including the Bhootanath Temple Complex at Killa Torgal, and ancient Ratta temples in Hooli, Degaon and Gokak, which now lie neglected. GADAG People unaware of importance While Gadag is known for the famous Lakkundi temple, history expert AD Kattimani from Gadag says many historic monuments need to be saved as people in rural areas still dont know their importance. The local administration should come forward to create awareness. Even as excavations have started in Lakkundi and surrounding areas, there are no State or Central government officials on the ground to disseminate information on the same, say experts, adding that it is important, especially when local residents are coming forward and handing over inscriptions and monuments found inside their houses and which they worshipped. Experts say some places inside Gadag town need more vigilance as last December, some miscreants defaced a side wall of Jodu Kalasa in Sudi village. People continue to misuse historic monuments. KALABURAGI Tombs damaged Although there are over 200 historical monuments, only some are protected by ASI and DAMH sites. Many sites are encroached or neglected due to different reasons, including the Bahamani Fort and Haft Gumbaz. Efforts of the district administration to evict families living in Kalaburagi Fort have not yielded results. Miscreants have damaged some tombs situated in Haft Gumbaz premises in search of hidden treasures. There is also lack of proper security at the 16 sites protected by DAMH. Activist Lakshmikanth says many monuments are dilapidated and unrepaired over years. Some monuments have become a place for illegal activities. Historian Shambhuling Vani urges the government to take steps to protect the monuments and make them attractive tourist spots by providing necessary facilities. HASSAN No protection for 50 sites While 45 monuments (24 by DAMH and 21 by ASI) belonging to the Hoysala dynasty are protected, over 50 lie neglected. Experts say the government is showing no signs of protecting the others, including Jain Basadis, inscriptions unearthed in Belur and Channarayapatna, highlighting the works of Chandragupta Mourya and the Chola dynasty. Historian Narasimha Murthy says the need of the hour is to conserve every monument without discrimination. The state and ASI should come up with special programmes to protect monuments for future generations. VIJAYAPURA Home to 81 monuments According to the ASI, Vijayapura city alone has 81 protected monuments, the second highest in India after Delhi. Yet, despite having so many ancient and historically significant monuments, only a few are protected by ASI. While some monuments, such as Gol Gumbaz, Ibrahim Roza, Bara Kaman, Upari Burj and Malik-ek-Maidan, are well maintained by ASI, many others remain neglected, including the fort wall surrounding the city. It has been damaged at many places and even illegally occupied by people to build homes. An ASI official questions the lack of funds for upkeep and maintenance to protect and promote several monuments. We can issue notices to residents, but we cannot remove them from ASI property as it is tricky. We dont get the required support from local authorities to remove encroachments, says the ASI official. State protected sites 800 Unprotected sites identified by state government 25,000 ASI protected sites in Karnataka: 506 (129 in Bengaluru Circle, 282 in Dharwad Circle, 95 in Hampi Circle) (Inputs from:Prakash Samaga/ Udupi; Tushar A Majukar/ Belagavi; Raghu Koppar/ Gadag; Ramakrishna Badsheshi / Kalaburagi; BR Udaya Kumar / Hassan; Firoz Rozindar / Vijayapura)

Senior IAS officers Manivannan, Maheshwar Rao in race for BBMP Chief?
BENGALURU: With Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) chief commissioner Tushar Girinath expected to be made additional chief secretary of the urban development, the question now doing the rounds here is who will head the richest and largest civic body of Karnataka? Going by sources, senior IAS officers P Manivannan and Maheshwar Rao are the top contenders for the coveted post. Manivannan is now principal secretary, Social Welfare Department, while Maheshwar Rao is managing director of Bangalore Metropolitan Rail Corporation Ltd. Manivannan is known for his good work. He earned the title of Demolition Man for clearing encroachments. Manivannan was commissioner of the Mysore Urban Development Authority and the Mysuru City Corporation. He has a fair understanding of Bengaluru city administration with his experience at Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), where he ensured uninterrupted power supply in most parts of the city. Hence, Manivannan may be chosen for the coveted post, a source said. Maheshwar Rao served as BBMP commissioner in 2018. He was secretary of the Agriculture Department. He was with the Labour Department. He served as commissioner for Industrial Development and director of Industries and Commerce. Jharkhand minority minister sparks fresh controversy with statements on anti-Waqf Act protests
RANCHI: Jharkhand Minority Affairs Minister Hafizul Hasan has once again landed into controversy after BJP leaders alleged that his statement, allegedly referring to the anti-Waqf Act protests, is inciting Muslims to unleash violence in Jharkhand and across the country. The latest controversy stems from a statement made by the minister, where he stated that Muslims will be forced to hit the streets if they are continuously disturbed. In a video clip released by the leader of the Opposition Babilal Marandi on Thursday, Hafizul Hasan can be seen stating that Muslims are trying to remain patient. If you seek to keep disturbing, then they will take to the streets. There will be violence, the country will be in chaos, the minister is heard saying. JMM minister Hafizul Hasan is crossing all limits and inciting Muslims to unleash violence in Jharkhand and across the country. A person attempting to spread unrest in the state has no right to hold a constitutional position. By allowing this person with a jihadi mentality to sit in the cabinet, what message does @HemantSorenJMM want to convey to the public? Babilal Marandi wrote, sharing the video. @jharkhandpolice should take cognizance of the matter and register a case against Hafizul Hasan under the National Security Act, ensuring appropriate action, he added. Hafizul Hasan's purported video surfaced days after another statement by him had irked the BJP leaders of the state. While speaking to a news channel on Monday, Hafizul Hasan had said, For me, Sharia is more important. We keep the Quran in our chest and the Constitution in our hands... Muslims walk with the Quran in their chest, and the Constitution in their hands. Okay! so we will first hold the Sharia and then the Constitution. The BJP strongly condemned the ministers remarks and accused Chief Minister Hemant Soren-led party of being a destroyer of the Constitution. In a post on X, senior BJP leader Shahzad Poonawalla alleged, Hafizul Hassan is a serial offender. Last week, he said that he puts Sharia first, then the Constitution. Now, he is saying the Muslims will get disturbed, come on the streets and resort to violence because of the Waqf Act. He is justifying the violence happening across the country over this. I just want to ask Rahul Gandhi, Jharkhand CM and other leaders of INDI Alliance, who claims to be the protector of the Constitution that whether this is Samvidhan ka samman, Mohabbat ki Dukan or they are votebank ke liye nafrat ke bhaijaan (Respect for the Constitution, Shop of Love' and you are 'Bhaijaan of hatred for vote bank'), said Shahzad Poonawalla. It indicates clearly that the violence which erupted in the name of Waqf and the anti-Hindu state-sponsored violence which took place recently, is targeted, spontaneous and not sponsored, organised, organic, and have the hands of the leaders of INDI-Alliance, he added.
