Hubballi murder case: Accused wanted to kill Anjali for last three months

HUBBALLI: Shocking details were revealed during the preliminary investigation of Vishwanath alias Girish Sawant, 22 who was arrested in Davanagere on Thursday night for allegedly murdering 20-year-old Anjali Ambiger at her residence in Veerapur Street in Hubballi on Wednesday. He had later fled to Mysuru. Sawant had allegedly revealed that he had plans to murder Anjali for the last three months and the same was shared with his friends. An investigating team member said that Sawant had told some of his close friends that he will soon be called second Fayaz and will murder Anjali soon. Fayaz is accused of murdering his former classmate Neha Hiremath at her college in Hubballi on April 18. According to the police, Sawant was angry as he did not want to see Anjali getting married to someone else. The relationship between Anjali and Sawant went stale when they had a fight three months ago. The couple went shopping at Durgadbail where Anjali told Sawant that the family was looking for grooms for her. This led to a heated argument between the couple and Sawant hit her in public. Hubballi murder accused stabs woman, jumps off train, near Dgere, caught

DAVANAGERE: Personnel of the Government Railway Police (GRP) caught Girish Sawant alias Vishwa, accused in the Hubballi Anjali Ambiger murder case, near Mayakonda in Davanagere district on Thursday night. Girish, who had fled Hubballi to Mysuru after allegedly murdering Anjali, boarded the Vishwamanava Express train to Hubballi from Arsikere Junction. An eyewitness said Girish, who was travelling in the general compartment, fought with other passengers over a petty issue. Based on the passengers complaint, he was questioned by the GRP personnel at Chikkajajur Junction. After he pleaded innocence, the GRP personnel let him go. However, when the train reached Hanumanahalli, Girish followed Lakshmi, a passenger, to the washroom and demanded that she give him the gold chain she was wearing. When Lakshmi refused and screamed for help, Girish stabbed her, causing a deep injury on her left hand. Meanwhile, hearing her screams, some passengers rushed to the spot and thrashed Girish, who jumped off the moving train. The GRP personnel, who received this information, caught Girish who was lying injured near the railway tracks at Mayakonda. They admitted him to the Chigateri district hospital, where he revealed his identity. The GRP personnel immediately alerted the Hubballi police, who were after Girish. The Hubballi police arrived in Davanagere around 11 pm and took Girish into their custody and shifted him to the KIMS Hospital in Hubballi. Lakshmi from Gadag, who was admitted to the Chigateri district hospital, was shifted to the SSIMS Hospital, where she underwent a minor surgery on Friday. Council polls: Four rebels could tilt the scales

BENGALURU: With biennial polls scheduled on June 3 for six council seats three Graduates and three Teachers it is becoming clear that rebellion could impact four seats. A number of leaders who have turned rebel and filed their nomination papers could turn the contest into a cliffhanger if they fail to concede to their party high commands diktat and remain in the fray. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is May 20. In North East Graduates seat (Ballari, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayanagara and Yadgir), Kalaburagi-Yadgir DCC Bank vice-president Suresh R Sajjan is the rebel candidate against BJPs official candidate Amarnath Patil. Former MLC Chandrashekar B Patil of the Congress is likely to benefit from this rebellion. In South West Graduates seat (Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Davanagere, Kodagu, Shivamogga & Udupi), both Dr Dhananjaya Sarji of the BJP and Ayanur Manjunath of the Congress are facing hiccups. Former three-time Udupi MLA K Raghupathi Bhat has asserted that he will not withdraw his papers as there is a regional imbalance with the party not giving representation to Dakshina Kannada leaders in the Council polls. So, the going may be tough for Sarji, a newbie and a native of Shivamogga. For Ayanur, the situation would be no different as senior Congress leader SP Dinesh, who had contested twice consecutively and lost by a narrow margin, is reportedly firm on remaining in the fray. SL Boje Gowda of the JDS, who is the NDA candidate from South West Teachers seat (Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, two taluks of Davanagere, Kodagu, Shivamogga & Udupi) has an uphill task, as a popular figure in the cooperative movement, Dr SR Harish Acharya of the BJP, has filed his papers. Congress candidate K K Manjunath Kumar may take advantage of the rift in the BJP-JDS alliance. In Bengaluru Graduates seat (BBMP Central, North, South, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban & Ramanagara) where A Deve Gowda is the BJP nominee and Ramoji Gowda is contesting on a Congress ticket, there is no strong rebellion in either party. But KPCC social media general secretary Ferdinand Lawrence has also filed his papers, claiming to be the Congress rebel candidate. The South East Teachers seat is likely to witness a close contest between sitting MLC Y A Narayanaswamy of the BJP and DT Srinivas, husband of former Hiriyur MLA Poornima. The BJP-JDS leadership managed to quell the rebellion in South Teachers seat (Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Mandya & Mysuru) as BJPs EC Ningaraj Gowda was convinced to withdraw his papers in favour of JDS nominee K Vivekananda. Former MLC KT Srikante Gowda was keen to file his papers as a JDS rebel but could not do so as he was hospitalised on Thursday. Scrutiny of papers for SE Teachers seat adjourned The Election Commission of India (ECI) which scrutinised the nomination papers of the candidates in five Legislative Council seats on Friday, has deferred that of the South East Teachers seat to 3 pm on Saturday citing technical reasons. Fifteen people have filed 22 nomination papers for that seat. As many as 103 people have filed 156 nomination papers for the six seats that will go to the polls on June 3. The papers of 76 candidates were accepted to fight for the five seats on Friday. Nomination papers of candidates from all three major partiesJDS, BJP, and Congresswere accepted. There was also some issue with the Bengaluru Graduates seat, as the returning officer, Amlan Aditya Biswas, had rejected some papers of independents that were not in order. Scrutiny is quasi-judicial work done by the RO in front of candidates, clarified Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Meena.

Good feedback for candidates in 13-14 seats in Karnataka: Congress leaders

BENGALURU: After the completion of Lok Sabha elections in the state, Congress is upbeat as the feedback and results of internal surveys have been positive for the party from most constituencies. Congress senior leader Saleem Ahmed said the party has received positive feedback from its partymen from about 18-20 constituencies. But some prudent leaders said the signs are good for the party in about 13-14 constituencies. When TNIE contacted the Congress unit in Davanagere, local leaders said they are fairly sure of the party doing well in all the eight Assembly segments in the constituency. The campaigning by party candidate Prabha Mallikarjun, who is pitted against BJPs Gayathri Siddeshwara, received good response, they added. Ballari workers and leaders too said the feedback from all the booths has been good for party candidate E Tukaram, who is contesting against BJPs B Sriramulu. The mood in Belgaum and Chikkodi constituencies in Belagavi district is in favour of Mrinal Hebbalkar and Priyanka Jarkiholi, party leaders said. This despite the fact that Congress has lost the previous three Lok Sabha elections in Belgaum. Priyanka is up against former sitting BJP MP Annasaheb Shankar Jolle, while Mrinal is contesting against former BJP CM Jagadish Shettar. Hassan Congress candidate Shreyas Patel, contesting against incumbent JDS MP Prajwal Revanna, and Star Chandru in Mandya, up against JDS state president HD Kumaraswamy, may have a good show, say party leaders, but are cautious about predicting the outcomes. The feedback is mixed from Gulbarga where AICC president Mallikarjun Kharges son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani is running against BJPs Umesh Jadva. This is because of a recent clash, where 50,000-60,000 members of one community attacked the houses of another community. But analyst BS Murthy pointed out that the Dalit and minority vote share here is so large that it dwarfs other communities. Congress is sure of good tidings in Raichur (ST reserved), where former IAS officer Kumar Naik is contesting against sitting MP and BJP candidate Raja Amareshwara Rai, they added. Congress is getting good vibes in Bengaluru Central and Rural, where Congress Mansoor Ali Khan and DK Suresh are contesting against BJPs PC Mohan and Dr CN Manjunath, the leaders said. The Grand Old Party is upbeat in Tumkur, where the partys Mudda Hanume Gowda is pitted against BJP leader V Somanna. While Lingayats have overwhelmingly supported Somanna, Vokkaligas, apart from SC/STs, Kurubas and minorities have backed Gowda, a Vokkaliga, they assessed. The party says it will fare well in Chikkaballapur, where Raksha Ramaiah, Youth Congress leader and son of former minister MR Seetharam, is the candidate against BJPs former state minister Dr K Sudhakar. Kolar too could be in the party candidates favour KV Gowtham, contesting against JDS Mallesh Babu, they added. The party leaders said the feedback is good from Mysore, where Congress spokesman and Vokkaliga leader M Lakshman is pitted against scion of the Mysuru royal family Yaduveer Krishnadatta Wadiyar. Chamarajanagar could have veered towards the partys Sunil Bose, up against BJPs little-known N Balraj, they added. But it is mixed for Bangalore South, where Congress Sowmya Reddy is contesting against BJPs Tejasvi Surya. But this is for the better as the prospects for Congress from the constituency in 2019 were poor, they said. Minister HK Patil said, We will win 18-20 seats in Karnataka and in North Karnataka where polls were held on May 7, we should win around 10 seats.

Will BJP pull out candidate from South Teachers seat?

BENGALURU: The uncertainty over the BJP-JDS alliance in the South Teachers Council seat continued with JDS declaring realtor Vivekananda as its candidate on Wednesday, coinciding with the BJPs Dr EC Ningaraj Gowda filing his nomination papers for the June 3 biennial polls. The lack of consensus between the alliance partners is likely to mar the prospects of their candidate as Congress has fielded a veteran and former MLC Marithibbe Gowda. But Vivekananda is likely to give a stiff fight, sources said. He was the backbone of former MLA SaRa Mahesh and former minister GT Devegowda and helped them in the previous Assembly polls, they added. Mahesh and Devegowda were said to have convinced Kumaraswamy to give the ticket to Vivekananda, though former MLC KT Srinkante Gowda was also in the race. Interestingly, it was Srinkante Gowda who introduced Vivekananda into politics, remarked a leader close to him. The South Teachers constituency has an electorate of 18,000 teachers from Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar districts. On Saturday, the BJP parliamentary board announced candidates for five Council seats out of six going to the polls. Ningaraj Gowdas name too was in the list. The next day, the JDS leadership held a crucial meeting and resolved not to leave the South Teachers seat to BJP as JDS had won it previously with Marithibbe Gowda. The BJP leadership, including former CM BS Yediyurappa, also favoured leaving it to JDS. But the hiccup is that Ningaraj Gowda is a candidate suggested by BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh, the sources said. After filing his nomination papers in Mysuru on Wednesday, Ningaraj Gowda met several RSS functionaries and BJP leaders to seek their advice as to whether to continue in the fray or to withdraw. BJP has not issued the B form to him to declare him as the partys official candidate. But he claimed that he will file the papers again on Thursday, the last date to do so, along with the B form. The deadline to withdraw the nomination papers is May 20 and will Ningaraj Gowda withdraw is the big question.

Double whammy: Drought or rain, its only loss for farmers in Karnataka

BENGALURU: On the one hand, farmers in Karnataka are facing distress due to severe drought, and on the other, sudden thundershowers are bringing fear of losing standing crops and death of cattle due to lightning. Since the last week of April, heavy rain has been reported in many parts of the state, damaging crops. Farmers who depend on agriculture and horticulture in Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Mysuru, Haveri and Kalaburagi have lost banana, onion, tomato and other crops. Srinivas Reddy, former director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre, said summer crops have been damaged. Sowing would have done by January or February but there was no rain this year. In areas where land is irrigated or is dependent on borewells, farmers took up summer crops. In a few places, unfortunately, borewells too dried up and farmers had paid for supply of water from other sources. Such crops were also damaged, he said. According to Reddy, horticulture crops along with paddy and maize were damaged. Horticulture crops which were ready for harvest were damaged. Due to their weight and heavy wind, plants collapse and nothing can be done for such crops, he said. Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy said the government is aware of crop loss due to heavy rain. For any loss due to natural disaster, the government will pay compensation. CM Siddaramaiah has already directed officials to take care of any losses. The respective tahsildars will take it up, and funds are with deputy commissioners, he said. A senior official from the revenue department said they are compiling losses and in a day or two, they will get the real picture. Apart from crop loss, farmers are also in distress as cattle have died in many places due to lightning. Recently, 50 goats and sheep and their shepherd died after being struck by lightning at a village near Hoskote. On Sunday, 20 sheep were killed in Chikkanayakanahalli of Tumkuru district. On Friday, 14 sheep died in Chamarajanagar. Compensation will be paid to these farmers. After the Southwest and Northeast monsoons failed last year, the State government declared 223 taluks drought-hit, and had sought Rs 18,177 crore in financial assistance for drought relief. An estimate of crop loss on 46.11 lakh hectares of agricultural land, and 2.06 lakh hectares of horticulture land was drawn up. Recently, Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda said the State government had paid drought compensation to over 32.12 lakh farmers. Officials are verifying documents of over two lakh farmers, and each has been given Rs 4,000. Revenue department sources said they have also decided to compensate 1.63 lakh farmers whose lands were not registered under the compensation list. Besides, there are 16 lakh farmers who have small landholdings, and the government decided to pay them compensation of Rs 3,000, sources said.

Power and water shortages threaten lives of dialysis patients in Karnataka's Mysuru district

MYSURU: While state and central governments proudly tout their efforts to bring quality healthcare to rural and remote parts of Karnataka, the ground reality tells a starkly different story. In HD Kote taluk's government hospital, which serves a significant tribal population, patients confront grave challenges due to the lack of consistent access to power and water. A video capturing these difficulties has gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the urgent situation. In a disheartening development, hospital staff have had to turn away at least 5 to 10 dialysis-dependent patients in the past two days due to the facility's inability to administer necessary treatments. Dialysis, crucial for individuals with severe kidney issues, relies on consistent access to power and water. The hospital's failure to ensure these essential resources has put the lives of many at risk. Patients returned home with complaints of cramps and breathlessness, symptoms exacerbated by missed dialysis sessions. They expressed their frustration and fear, blaming the poor service and lack of resources at the government hospital. Disruption of power & water shortages are putting lives at risk in HD Kote taluk government hospital in #Mysuru district. Patients, including dialysis-dependent individuals, are being turned away due to the hospital's inability to provide essential treatments. @XpressBengaluru pic.twitter.com/oKsViAu65a Karthik K K (@Karthiknayaka) May 15, 2024 We come here hoping for relief and we are dependent on government service as we cant afford this service in private hospitals. If basic facilities like power and water are not found at hospitals, what will be the situation of patients? Sometimes they blame it on rain on CESC officials, but they dont consider the situation of patient who come from long distance from neighboring villages for this purpose, said Rangaswamy, relative of a patient. Meanwhile, the hospital's staff, caught between the demands of their duties and the constraints of their resources, struggle to provide adequate care under these circumstances. A staff, on condition of anonymity, said, We are trying our best with what we have, but without consistent power and water, it is impossible to deliver the care these patients need, he said. When the issue was brought to the notice of District health officer (DHO) Dr Kumaraswamy, he said that he would look into this and get it resolved at the earliest.

Karnataka: Woman dies alighting from moving train, kin get relief from Railways

BENGALURU: Death or injury caused while boarding or deboarding trains is an untoward incident, said Karnataka High Court, awarding a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the legal heirs of an elderly woman. Justice HP Sandesh passed the order, allowing a petition filed by the legal heirs of victim Jayamma, who died at the Channapatna railway station in Ramanagara district on February 22, 2014. The court said it was an untoward incident as defined under Section 123 of the Indian Railways Act, and the Railways is liable to pay the compensation under Section 124A of the Act. Jayamma was getting down from a train after realising that she had boarded the wrong one when the incident occurred. Jayamma, accompanied by her sister Rathnamma, had purchased tickets to go to Mysuru in the Tirupati passenger train. But they board the Tuticorin Express by mistake. As they were getting down from the train, Jayamma fell on the platform and died on the spot, while Rathnamma managed to alight safely. Jayammas legal heirs moved the high court after the Railway Claims Tribunal rejected their claim in 2016, holding that the cause for the death was due to self-inflicted injuries under Section 124A of the Indian Railways Act, though it had accepted that Jayamma was a bonafide passenger. The Tribunal also held that the incident occurred due to Jayammas deliberate act of jumping from a moving train instead of adopting safe options of either getting down at the next stop or pulling the chain meant for an emergency stop. The counsel for the family argued that the sisters alighted from the train after realising that they had boarded a wrong train. The deceased accidentally fell from the train, resulting in her death, as she lost balance as the train might have just started. The high court noted that the Tribunal erroneously concluded that it was a deliberate act of jumping from the moving train and causing self-inflicted injuries. This was after taking note of the fact that the sister of the deceased had safely alighted from the train.

Kidnap case: Accused arrested before FIR was filed, says JDS leader Sa Ra Mahesh

MYSURU: Senior JDS leader Sa Ra Mahesh has sparked a controversy by alleging a conspiracy in the kidnapping case allegedly involving JDS leader and former minister HD Revanna. Mahesh, a former minister, has claimed that before an FIR was filed against Revanna and another accused, Satish Babu, for allegedly abducting a victim of sexual harassment, the latter was detained by the police. According to Mahesh, a bakerys CCTV camera captured Satishs detention at 12 pm on the day when the FIR was registered at 9.30 pm. But the bakerys hard disk was allegedly tampered with and erased by authorities. However, another mobile device recorded the incident and we will share the video as evidence, he said. Mahesh further said that his legal team plans to present this evidence in court. Mahesh also raised questions about the credibility of the complainant, suggesting that the the complainant may have been coerced into signing a blank paper after being offered money. He expressed concern about the complainants whereabouts and criticised the delay in filing a 164A statement with the woman involved in the case. Additionally, Mahesh questioned the plausibility of a kidnapping occurring while the victim was grazing sheep, referencing statements from the villagers who confirmed the victims presence in the area.

Lakshadweep set to tackle sexual abuse with school-level awareness

KOCHI: Against the backdrop of the rollout of recent development plans and the attention garnered by Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit, the Lakshadweep administration is set to adopt another landmark measure. It has decided to incorporate lessons on imparting awareness of sexual abuse into the school curriculum and train staff to deal with such issues, marking a significant step forward in educational reform. Lakshadweeps department of education currently follows the CBSE and Kerala board curricula for schools. This exposes it to the Kerala governments decision to introduce new textbooks for standards I, III, V, VII and IX with several portions aimed at creating awareness of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. In a statement before the Kerala High Court, the island administration said any modification to CBSE and Kerala board curricula will be adopted by schools on the aisles. It further said that teachers and other school personnel will be imparted regular training as part of new initiatives by the boards. The statement was filed in response to a petition for including prevention-oriented programmes on sexual abuse as part of the school curriculum. V Sajith Kumar, standing counsel for the administration, submitted that comprehensive training programmes have already been conducted to equip teaching faculty with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively carry out prevention programmes and identify signs of abuse among students. The Nishtha (National Initiative for School Heads and Teachers Holistic Advancement) training programme, initiated at the instance of NCERT and the ministry of education, offered training on the Pocso Act and on effectively dealing with issues faced by children. The islands education department launched extensive awareness campaigns targeting students, parents and school staff to foster a culture of open communication and vigilance against sexual abuse. Headmasters have been sensitised about the legal obligations of reporting cases of child abuse to authorities. The statement pointed out that protocols for reporting incidents of sexual abuse and consequential actions have been established, ensuring swift action and maintaining the confidentiality of cases to protect the rights and well-being of victims. Complaint boxes have been installed in all schools, it said. As part of the policy adopted by the department, all schools exhibited Komal, a film on child sexual abuse. Faculties are given regular training for building up capacity for guidance and counselling. Recently, 10 teachers from different schools were sent for five days of training at the regional institution of education in Mysuru, Karnataka. Avail KeLSA resources: Kerala High Court The Kerala High Court directed the Lakshadweep administration to avail the services of resource persons of the Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KeLSA) for imparting training to teachers on sexual-awareness programmes developed by Keralas department of general education for schools following the state syllabus in the Union territory.

JDS MLA H.D. Revanna Granted Bail in Woman's Abduction Case

BENGALURU: Janata Dal Secular (JDS) MLA and former minister H.D. Revanna was granted bail by a Special Court for elected representatives in Bengaluru city on Monday, amid allegations of abduction of a woman who is claimed to have been a victim of sexual exploitation. Revanna is currently held at Parappana Agrahara Prison in Bengaluru city for five days. The woman is alleged to be one of the victims of sexual exploitation by his son Prajwal Revanna, a Lok Sabha member representing the Hassan seat. Speaking to reporters after the bail hearing, Revanna's advocate, Srinivas, stated that the Court found discrepancies in the investigation conducted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and consequently granted bail. He further alleged that the accusations against Revanna were politically motivated. As part of the bail conditions, the Court required Revanna to provide a Rs 5 lakh personal bond and two sureties, among other stipulations. When asked about his client's release, the advocate expressed confidence that Revanna would be released from prison on Tuesday upon fulfilling the Court's requirements. Revanna was taken into custody by the sleuths of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on May 4 from the residence of his father, former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda. According to the police complaint filed by the victim's son H.D. Raju, his mother, a former maid at Revanna's residence in Holenarsipur, was allegedly abducted from their house in Hebbalu Koppalu, Krishnaraja Nagar taluk of Mysuru district, in an attempt to pressure her into not disclosing the alleged sexual harassment by Prajwal Revanna to investigating officers. Based on the complaint lodged by the victim's son, the Krishnaraja Nagar police filed a First Information Report against Revanna. The 17th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Bengaluru city had ordered judicial custody for Revanna until Monday. Revanna, along with his son Prajwal, has been accused of sexual exploitation of women, and cases have been registered against them at Holenarsipura Town police station. Prajwal reportedly fled the country on April 27 after allegations of sexual exploitation surfaced, leading the State Government to form a SIT. A blue corner notice has been issued against him by Interpol officials.

Cong demands Prajwal Revanna's extradition from Germany in murder case The Congress on Monday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make all efforts to bring back Karnataka's JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna, who fled the country after sexual abuse allegations surfaced against him. Talking to reporters, the Congress' women wing president Alka Lamba said the party will show black flags to Modi during his rally and roadshow in Mumbai on May 15 and 17. ''You should bring back Prajwal Revanna and hand him over to the Karnataka government. The silence of PM and BJP leaders is like supporting the accused,'' Lamba said. The Centre must make talk to Germany to get back Revanna, she said. After the sexual abuse allegations surfaced, Revanna fled to Germany. ''We will show you (Modi) black flags and gherao you even if you arrest us,'' Lamba said, adding her party is making plans for the agitation during the PM's visit to Mumbai. So far three FIRs have been registered in Hassan, Mysuru and Bengaluru against Revanna, the NDA's Hassan Lok Sabha constituency candidate, and his father H D Revanna in connection with the sexual abuse allegations. The Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case following a complaint by the State Commission for Women chairperson Nagalakshmi Chowdhary. The JD(S) leadership has suspended Prajwal from the party.

Bengaluru: Residents of Kanminike apartments seek separate electricity meters, roads

BENGALURU: Residents of the Bangalore Development Authoritys (BDA) sprawling residential complex at Kanminike (Phase-II & IV), off Mysuru Road, desperately seek separate electricity meters, and direct access from the main road promised six years ago, when the flats were sold. BDA assures the road will be in place by year-end. Dr Mithra BC, who owns a 3 BHK house told TNIE that due to the temporary electricity connection provided for the residents, electricity bills are huge. We have a pre-paid electricity arrangement with BESCOM. The contractor pays upto Rs 30,000 a month. We pool in money from the families that have occupied the homes and pay any amount beyond that. Due to heavy consumption during summer, our bill came upto Rs 4,000 per family for both, March and April, he said. The absence of individual electricity meters was hitting them hard, and causing problems among neighbours, he added. Out of nine lifts, we are using only one lift so that electricity consumption can be reduced, he added. AM Thimmaiah, a 2 BHK flat owner said, This is a beautiful locality with BDAs residential complex built on nearly 50 acres. But the facilities are sorely inadequate and only 50 families have occupied their flats. BDA had promised direct access from the Mysuru Road in 2018. Our apartment is located 3.5 km from Challaghatta Metro station. When I bought the property, we were promised good road connectivity, running 80 ft wide. It is 2024 now, and we still dont have access to the road. We need to take a detour and pass through Kanminike village to reach our homes, he said. A top BDA official said, We acquired upto 800 metres of the road. But due to a cemetery along the route, we could not acquire the remaining land. So, the alignment was changed and another round of land acquisition had to begin. We have got it cleared by the board recently, and the preliminary notificiation for acquisition has been issued. After the final notification is issued, we can acquire the land and call for tender to ready the road. The process will take some time. We are looking at having a new road by end of 2024 if the acquisition takes place smoothly. The official conceded that non-installation of electric meters by the contractor was an unresolved issue and needed to be addressed.

BJP may settle for 4 seats in Karnataka biennial polls, to give South Teachers seat to partner JDS

BENGALURU: BJP, which had declared its candidates for five of the six Legislative Council seats (three each of graduates and teachers) leaving one for its alliance partner JDS, is now likely to give one more seat to the regional party in the biennial polls and settle for four seats. The biennial Council polls are on June 3. JDS patriarch HD Deve Gowda and party state president HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday met to discuss the South Teachers seat and decided not to leave it for BJP, sources said. It is our seat which we held previously and the BJP leadership, including former chief minister BS Yediyurappa, is convinced that it should come to us, a JD(S) source said. But some BJP leaders are not happy. Party spokesperson MG Mahesh told The New Indian Express that the party has already declared a candidate, EC Ningaraj Gowda, for the seat and the decision has been taken by the high command. There cannot be any change, he added. Ningaraj Gowda said, It has been decided by the parliamentary board. I will file the nomination papers on May 15. I have no idea of the party leaving the seat to JDS. But another source said the BJP leadership will give the seat to JDS. If that happens, the regional party will contest from South teachers and South-West teachers constituencies that it held previously. This could also help prolong the JDS-BJP alliance amid the raging controversy over the alleged sex tapes of Hassan JDS-BJP Lok Sabha candidate Prajwal Revanna. JDS has already announced BL Bhoje Gowda as its candidate for the South West teachers seat. It may field former MLC KT Srikante Gowda or businessman Vivekananda from the South Teachers constituency. BJP has announced Amarnath Patil from North East Graduates seat, Dr Dhanajaya Sirji from South West Graduates, A Deve Gowda from Bengaluru Graduates and YA Narayanaswamy from South East Teachers and they will take on Congress candidates in direct fights. Ningaraj Gowda is a former Mysuru University syndicate member. In fact, former MLC Marithibbe Gowda had won the seat from JDS last time, but he recently joined Congress and is contesting as the Congress candidate. Winning the two seats that it held in the past will come as a big relief for JDS, whose base is getting eroded by national parties in the Old Mysuru region, touted as the Vokkaliga bastion. The electorate for the South Teachers constituency is teachers from Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar and Hassan districts. That is the reason the regional party is not willing to leave it for BJP, party sources said.

Sexual assault victim says she was not kidnapped; questions now over Revannas arrest

MYSURU: In a major twist to the kidnapping case of the sexual assault victim, in which the Special Investigation Team had arrested JDS MLA HD Revanna, a video clip said to be of the victim has surfaced on social media. In the clip, the woman claimed that nobody had kidnapped her and that Revanna and his son and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna are innocent. The woman was a domestic help at Revnnas residence when she was allegedly sexually assaulted. The video comes a day ahead of Revannas bail plea to be heard in a special court on Monday. In the short clip, the woman says she had visited her relatives house in Hunsur for a few days. But when she saw the news on TV channels that her son Raju had filed a police complaint against Revanna, his close aide Satish Babu and Prajwal, she was shocked, she claimed. I was worried why my son had filed a complaint when I was not kidnapped. I want to clarify that Revanna, Prajwal Revanna and Babanna (Satish Babu) did not harm me. They have looked after me very well. I have no connection to the video (sleaze video of Prajwal Revanna) released on mobile phones. Nobody harmed me. I have not done anything wrong, she said. The woman also assured the family members that she is fine and will return home soon. Nobody should panic. I am in a safe place. I request the police not to harass my family members by visiting our house. As there are small children in our house, they will get scared. As we are labourers, our neighbours will see our family in low light if the police regularly visit our house. Leave us alone. If we face any problem, we will approach the police station. But right now, we have no problem. If my family members suffer any problem, then the police will be responsible. My son had filed a complaint in panic as I was away in a relatives house, the woman said. However, TNIE has not independently verified the authenticity of the video doing the rounds on social media platforms and also on television channels. In the meantime, the relative too claimed that the victim had come to her house to get medical treatment at a Hunsur hospital. She said the police, however, had picked her up from their house. JDS MLC KT Srikantegowda told TNIE that false charges have been framed against Revanna. The womans daughter and son-in-law have clearly stated that the woman was not kidnapped. They have given the statement clearing the air. Why should the kidnap charges continue against Revanna when the family members have clarified, he asked. When TNIE contacted the police, they were tight-lipped. They only said the SIT is probing the case and they have no further knowledge of it. The state government set up the Special Investigation Team after the alleged sex tapes of Prajwal Revanna surfaced. There are also reports that the woman in the video clip which had gone viral is not the victim but her relative.

Sexual abuse case: Devaraje Gowda sent to 14 days judicial custody

HOLENARASIPUR/BENGALURU: The Holenarasipur JMFC court on Saturday remanded BJP leader and advocate Devaraje Gowda in judicial custody for 14 days. Gowda was detained by Hiriyur police in Chitradurga district on Friday night. Holenarasipur town police led by Hallimysuru circle inspector and Banavara sub-inspector took Gowda into custody in Hiriyur and brought him to Holenarasipur on Saturday around 4.30 am. Two mobile phones, some documents and a Toyota Innova SUV in which Gowda allegedly tried to escape were seized. Holenarasipur town police have invoked rape and sexual assault charges against Gowda based on fresh statements by the 36-year-old victim. The sexual harassment complaint against Gowda was filed by the victim on April 1. Sections 376, 354a, 354c, 448, 504 and 506 have been invoked against Gowda. The police started tracking his cell phones after his audio recordings with former MLA LR Shivarame Gowda came to light. In connection with the case registered against him on April 1, Gowda filed an application for anticipatory bail on May 8. The petition has been posted for hearing on May 15. Hassan superintendent of police MS Mohammad Sujeetha quizzed Gowda for almost four hours. His statements were recorded at the circle police inspectors office in the presence of additional SP Venkatesh Naidu and DSP Ashok. Faces case for obstructing official on duty Devaraje Gowda too reportedly posed some questions to the police officers. After his statements were recorded, he was taken to the government hospital in Holenarsipur for mandatory medical tests. Meanwhile, Hassan extension police have taken up a complaint against the advocate for allegedly preventing Hassans deputy commissioner C Sathyabhama from discharging her duty while at office a few months ago. Gowda is also wanted by SIT probing the Hassan sex scandal. He had responded to the SITs first notice by giving his statements. However, he absconded after SIT issued him a second notice in connection with his press conference where he played some audio recordings and showed documents claiming to be crucial in the probe into the sex scandal. He had also urged the government to hand over the case to the CBI after he was allegedly asked by an officer of SIT to delete a statement which he had made against Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Thundershowers, yet Karnataka to face pre-monsoon deficit

BENGALURU: In the last 17 days, Karnataka has received good rains, owing to which the rainfall deficit has reduced by half. However, officials in the India Meteorological Department (IMD) say that the rainfall in the coming weeks is unlikely to be enough to fill the deficit before the onset of the southwest monsoon. According to IMD data, Karnataka, during the pre-monsoon period between March 1 and May 11, received 31.5 mm of rainfall as against the normal 63.3 mm. The highest rainfall deficiency of 76% has been reported in Dakshin Kannada district. The coastal district got 25.6 mm of rain as against the normal 106.7 mm. Coastal Karnataka on the whole saw a 53% deficit in rain. The region received 28.5 mm of rain, against the normal 60.5 mm. South-interior Karnataka too saw a rain deficit of 58%. The region received 33.9 mm of rain, against the normal 81 mm. North-interior Karnataka recorded 32% deficiency as it received 39.4 mm of rainfall as against the normal 43.3mm. Bengaluru Rural and Urban districts saw rainfall deficiency of 51% and 54%, respectively. Chamarajanagar and Chikkaballapura districts recorded a 75% deficit in rainfall. In Mysuru and Mandya districts, there is a 44% and 52% rainfall deficiency, respectively. IMD officials say the pre-monsoon showers had a delayed start, and so far, Karnataka has received 31.5 mm of rain. From April 25 to May 1, there was a 97% deficiency in rainfall. Nearly all parts of Karnataka started receiving rainfall only from May 1. However, despite an increase in thundershowers in most parts of the state, it is unlikely that it will close the gap. The formation of weather systems will have to be assessed until the onset of the southwest monsoon. Rain is forecast for the next 34 days, after which the systems will again have to be studied.

Thousands send postcards to ECI asking it to wake up over political hate speeches

BENGALURU: Raising their voices against inaction of the Election Commission of India (ECI) over politicians spewing hate speech while campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, members of civil society groups and citizens queued up outside post offices and mail boxes to send postcards to the commission. The protest campaign was held across 11 cities in the country, including Bengaluru and Mysuru, around 11 am. The #GrowASpineOrResign campaign revolved around citizens demanding the ECI to promote a free and fair election. The message was loud and clear through inked postcards that had a skull and a spine stamped on them and advocated for punitive action against hate speech by several BJP leaders, openly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the elections. Vinay Kumar, an activist, said, Whatever action the ECI has taken against hate speech is futile and useless and it has not deterred even the PM from making such statements. Moreover, the concern is that even after the election this will continue to have a long lasting impact on society. Over 200 individuals in Bengaluru and thousands across the country have sent postcards designed by Vinay Kumar to the ECI asking it to wake up and realise that it is an independent body and doesnt work for the government. The group also submitted a joint complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai signed by 20 organisations, including lawyers, activists, filmmakers and citizens.

Reputation of male, female equal: Bengaluru court

BENGALURU: Character, reputation or feeling comes first and stands equal for both males and females, said the city civil and sessions court, rejecting the anticipatory bail to three youth, including a woman. The trio had allegedly videographed a man naked and threatened to send the video to all his contacts and the media. Judge Mamtaz, 52nd Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, said the body of male or female is always treated as holy and the mental injuries are more heinous than the physical injuries as the act of making a naked video public will leave an indelible scar on the mind. On April 21, the accused woman called her friend, the complainant, who is a resident of Laggere, to come to a pub at JP Nagar. He arrived at around 11 pm and the two, along with her two male friends, drank till 2 am. Later, one of the accused snatched the complainants scooter key. Another accused and the woman then pushed the complainant into the car and abused in filthy language for not returning the money he had taken from the woman. They later took the complainant near Shirke apartments in Kengeri and assaulted him. Then near Mysuru Road, they asked him to pay Rs 70,000 on that day or Rs 1 lakh the next day. Later, they took him to Sonnenahalli where one of the accused was staying and locked him up in a room. They made him remove all his clothes and videographed him. They forced him to get a cheque book from his residence through a delivery app at that hour and made him sign a blank cheque. They threatened him that if he did not return the money by May 5, the video would be sent to all his contacts. A day after returning home, the complainant filed a complaint with Puttenahalli police on April 23. The court noted that the case is still being investigated and if the accused persons are granted bail, they may try to destroy evidence.

Dont rush to become CM, you may fail: Somanna to DKS

BENGALURU: With Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy continuing their slugfest over Hassan JDS MP Prajwal Revannas alleged sex scandal, leaders cutting across party-lines, close to both of them, feel it is unwarranted, even as it is imperative for the guilty to be punished. The issue escalated into a spat between Vokkaliga leaders within the JDS and Congress, with equal number of them siding strongly with either Kumaraswamy or Shivakumar on the issue. However, certain non-Vokkaliga leaders, including ministers within the Congress government and some BJP leaders from the Old Mysuru region, have been cautious in this regard. Former minister V Somanna, speaking his mind, on Thursday suggested that Shivakumar should refrain from attacking former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and his family. Dont rush to become the chief minister. If you take decisions in a hurry, there are chances it will backfire, the senior Veerashaiva Lingayat leader warned. Shivakumar has attained all the posts, and is just one step away from the top post. I was the one who wished that he become CM when the Congress came to power in the state, since both of us hail from the same taluk, he observed. Somanna, however, clarified that if the charges against Prajwal are proven, he should be given the harshest punishment. It may be noted here that Somanna has been on good terms with Shivakumar all along. The JDS rank and file held protests across the Old Mysuru region, targeting Shivakumar. If Shivakumar continues to drag the Gowda family into the Prajwal row, the JDS would use it as an opportunity to reorganise itself. The outcome of the Lok Sabha polls will also have a bearing on the regional partys future prospects, observed a political analyst. The poll results will be out on June 4. JDS core committee chairman GT Deve Gowda, who held a meeting on Thursday, said the party will launch its membership drive soon to strengthen the organisation ahead of the ZP/TP polls expected to be held in July. The JDS party is still a force in Mandya, Kolar, Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural, and Hassan, with no dearth of candidates to contest the polls for the rural local bodies, said TR Nagaraju, a former mayor of Tumakuru.

BENGALURU: The Special Investigation Team formed to probe the alleged sexual abuse cases against Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna has detained four more people in connection with kidnapping a woman, sources in the SIT said on Thursday. The SIT has already arrested Prajwal's father and Holenarasipura MLA H D Revanna who is under judicial custody at the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Wednesday had said that a third person had been arrested, but declined to divulge their identity citing investigation procedures. JDS holds padayatra in Mysuru, wants DKS dropped

MYSURU: A day after JDS leaders sought a judicial probe into the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, party leaders led by MLA GT Devegowda took out a padayatra on Wednesday, demanding an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They also demanded that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar be dropped from the Cabinet. JDS leaders, including former MLA SR Mahesh, MLA GD Harish Gowda, MLC CN Manjegowda, former MLAs K Mahadevu and Ashwin Kumar, former MLC KT Srikante Gowda, JDS district president Narasimhaswamy, and party workers, took out a padayatra from Old Milk Dairy Circle on Bannur Road to the Deputy Commissions Office. JDS workers, holding placards, shouted slogans against Shivakumar and demanded a CBI probe, expressing distrust over the investigation conducted by the SIT constituted by the State Government. Devegowda alleged that a large number of pen drives were purchased from a private company in Chennai for Rs 3 crore, and the obscene videos were copied to the pen drives in a laboratory in Malaysia before they were distributed to the public. The photos and videos of Prajwal Revannas driver, Karthik, with Congress Hassan candidate Shreyas Patel have been shown in the media. There is information that Karthik campaigned for Patel in the Lok Sabha elections. As SIT cannot conduct a proper investigation, and the team cannot visit Malaysia or Chennai for investigation, we demand the case be handed over to the CBI, the MLA said. Meanwhile, former MLA SR Mahesh said that few SIT officials are investigating the case based on the directives from Congress leaders. There cannot be a proper probe into the case. We want the SIT to investigate to know who had downloaded the videos to pen drives and who had distributed them. As there was no arrest of any person in this regard, we doubt the investigation. So, we demand a CBI probe. A few Congress leaders have conspired to finish off the JDS, he said.

Karnataka Govt Rejects CBI Probe; H D Revanna Sent to Judicial Custody

Karnataka Govt Rejects CBI Probe; H D Revanna Sent to Judicial Custody Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara on Wednesday ruled out a CBI probe into the sexual abuse case against the JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is the NDA candidate from Hassan. This was after JD(S) second-in-command H D Kumaraswamy mounted an attack on the government expressing doubts over the manner the investigation was carried out. Alliance partners JD(S) and BJP demanded that the case, which is being investigated by the state government-constituted SIT, be handed over to the CBI. Kumaraswamy intensified his attack on the government even as his elder brother and Holenarasipura MLA H D Revanna, who is facing charges of kidnapping a woman, was remanded to judicial custody till May 14 by a Magisterial court here on Wednesday. Revanna, son of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, was produced before the court after the completion of four days' police custody. Also, his bail petition before a sessions court has been posted for Thursday. Revanna was arrested in the alleged case of kidnapping a woman, based on a complaint by her son, who alleged that the MLA's son and MP Prajwal Revanna had sexually assaulted her. The woman was subsequently rescued, according to police. The alleged sexual abuse of several women by Prajwal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest. Alleged explicit videos involving Prajwal started making the rounds ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka on April 26. Prajwal reportedly left the country on April 27, a day after the polls. He has skipped summons issued by the SIT to appear before it. A blue corner notice has been issued by the Interpol to bring him back. JD(S) party workers staged a demonstration in some parts of Karnataka including Mandya, Ramanagara and Mysuru accusing D K Shivakumar and other Congress leaders of hatching conspiracy against the JD(S). They raised slogans, and burnt the effigy of the two Congress leaders. Kumaraswamy sought to know why the police did not act on a complaint against a man, who allegedly said that explicit videos of Prajwal and several women will be released. It is now in public domain that Naveen Gowda on April 21 night at 8 pm announced releasing explicit videos on WhatsApp in the next few seconds. I want to ask Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara. What is the role of SIT (Special Investigation Team)? he asked while talking to reporters here. Kumaraswamy also sought to know why the kidnapped woman has not been produced before a court yet. He said: Till now the SIT has not arrested Naveen Gowda. They have not even issued summons to him. Why are you suppressing all these things? Its been a fortnight since the videos were made public. Who is he and whom is he seen in photographs? On his nephew's whereabouts, Kumaraswamy said, If you ask me, what can I answer you? I dont know. When I am not in his contact. I am telling you very clearly. I dont have any relations with him. He has his own dealings.'' Parameshwara turned down the former chief ministers demand for a CBI probe. Kumaraswamy had raised over 100 questions. I cannot answer all of them. He had asked for the CBI probe, which we will not do. The SIT is competent. I have said that we will get a proper investigation done, the Home Minister said. According to Parameshwara, three people have been arrested so far in a case related to the kidnapping of the woman, including Revanna and his aide Satish Babanna. He declined to share the details of the third person saying that disclosing the name would affect the investigation. To a question whether there will be any investigation against those who leaked the videos, Parameshwara said, We do not wish to hide anything. The probe will also cover the circulation of the pen drive. Kumaraswamy has alleged that policemen have distributed it. Which police distributed it and where, are the aspects we have to look into. The SIT will decide whether to issue any notice to Kumaraswamy on his charges, Parameshwara explained. On not arresting Karthik Gowda, driver of Prajwal Revanna, who is believed to have had the pen drive containing explicit videos allegedly involving the MP and several women, Parameshwara said there should be clear evidence to arrest someone. In view of the JD(S) aggressive posture, the ruling Congress alleged that attempts were on to cover up the scandal by diverting public attention towards the release of explicit videos and those behind it. ''Several issues are being discussed in the state, but looking at the discussions I feel that somewhere we have forgotten the background. According to my knowledge the discussion that is going on is about the world's biggest sexual abuse case. I feel its importance has been forgotten,'' said minister Krishna Byre Gowda. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar accused Kumaraswamy of being behind the circulation of explicit videos allegedly linked to Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, and called him ''king of blackmailing'' and the ''lead, director, and producer of the story.''

HD Revanna Remanded to Week Judicial Custody in Abduction of Woman Case

Bengaluru : The 17th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Judge Ravindranath Kattimani on Wednesday remanded Janata Dal Secular (JDS) MLA and former minister H.D. Revanna to 7 days judicial custody in connection with the alleged abduction of a woman. Following the judicial custody awarded to him by the Court , Revanna, incumbent Holenarsipura MLA, was sent to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, Bengaluru city. However, his bail plea is coming up for hearing tomorrow (Thursday). Revanna is charged with abduction of a woman who is said alleged to have been one of the victims of sexual exploitation by his son and Hassan Lok Sabha member Prajwal Revanna. After some of the video clips of the allegations of sexual exploitation of a series of women went viral in public (April 24 this year), Prajwal fled the country and a blue corner notice against him has been issued by Interpol officials. Earlier, Revanna was taken into custody on last Saturday by sleuths of Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigating a series of sexual exploitation of women by Prajwal Revanna. In one of the complaints to the police, both father and son have been named accused as per the complaint of a victim. The complaint has been registered at Holenarsipura town police station. In another complaint against Revanna, a 20-year-old youth H.D. Raju, a resident of Hebbalu Koppalu in Krishnaraja Nagar taluk of Mysuru district alleged that his mother, who had earlier worked at the residence of Revanna in Holenarsipura town of Hassan district, has been missing and kept in an unknown location at the behest of JDS MLA by one of his close aide Satish Babu. Satish Babu has also been arrested by the police. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday stated to have appointed two additional Special Public Prosecutors-senior advocate Ashok Nayak and Jayana Kothari, to handle cases related to alleged sexual atrocities against women by Prajwal Revanna which are under investigations by the sleuths of SIT under Criminal Investigation Department. The move to include two additional Special Public Prosecutors to handle cases related to sexual atrocities is to strengthen the legal team, said the Chief Minister.

JDS demands judicial probe into Prajwal Revanna alleged sex abuse, plans stir in Mysuru

MYSURU: In an attempt to salvage the partys reputation which has tanked due to the alleged sexual assault involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, JDS leaders are demanding a judicial investigation by a sitting judge of the Karnataka High Court. Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, former minister and JDS MLA GT Devegowda expressed scepticism on the ability of the SIT to conduct an impartial inquiry. Given Congress reluctance to hand over the case to the CBI, fearing the Central governments interference, it is imperative that a sitting judge of the Karnataka High Court oversees the investigation, he stated. Devegowda insisted that the SIT should find out who distributed the pen drives containing explicit videos. We suspect that the pen drives were distributed under the direction of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The SIT should arrest those responsible for their distribution. Instead of conducting a thorough investigation, Congress is blaming JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda, former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the incident. Accusing Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar of conspiring to undermine JDS in the state, he said the party will protest in Mysuru. JDS workers, particularly women, will gather near Mysuru Palace to protest against Congress and demand a judicial inquiry on Wednesday, he declared. JDS MLA GT Devegowda Former MLA Sa Ra Mahesh said he will retire from politics and resign from JDS membership if SIT proves that a woman was rescued from the farmhouse of Holenarsipur MLA HD Revannas aide Rajashekar in Kalenahalli. If SIT releases video or photographic evidence of the woman being rescued from Revannas assistants farmhouse, I will immediately retire from politics and leave JDS, he vowed. He said that according to his sources, the woman had actually been harboured in her relative Pavitra Harishs house in Hunsur. Accusing Congress of foisting false cases against JDS leaders in the Mysuru region, he said, I know who influenced the womans son to file a kidnapping case, who drafted the complaint and what incentives were offered to him. I will substantiate these claims with supporting documents. We cannot expect impartiality from SIT who are concerned with their own career prospects.

Karnataka gets monsoon-ready

BENGALURU: The recent incidence of rainfall across parts of Karnataka hints at the onset of monsoon. Accordingly, the Revenue Department has written to Regional Commissioners, DCs and Chief Executive Officers to prepare for heavy rain. The officials have been instructed to identify low-lying areas, hold coordination meetings with relevant departments, and make preparations to quickly alert residents near dams, among others. A circular issued by the state disaster management from the revenue department informs that as per IMD prediction, a whopping 104 per cent rainfall is expected across the country, while Karnataka would also receive more rain. With this, there is a need to take precautionary measures to avoid any eventualities in the wake of heavy downpour. There is also the need to convene and distribute responsibilities with other departments for better management. The authorities have instructed DCs to identify low-lying areas, for which coordination is required with the Urban Development Department/RDPR and also the PWD. Police arrest four for illegal abortion in Mandya

MANDYA: Four persons were caught red-handed on Sunday, conducting a sex-selective abortion on a woman, in Pandavapura taluk of Mysuru district. Ironically, illegal termination of the female foetus was being done at the residential quarters of the medical department personnel, situated just behind the taluk health officers office. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the quarters and apprehended four individuals -- Anand, ambulance driver of the taluk government hospital, his wife Ashwini, a D-Group employee in the taluk government hospital, Ashwinis mother Shashikala, and Girijamba, a nurse from Babu Nursing Home. Preliminary investigations have unveiled a disturbing pattern of female foeticide spanning several months within the residential quarters. Acting on public information, a police team led by sub-inspector Umesh conducted a midnight raid on Sunday, resulting in the arrest of the four perpetrators. The woman being operated on was Pushpalatha, a resident of Salundi in Mysuru, and mother of two daughters. Coerced by family pressure for a male child, Pushpalatha underwent a sex determination test, and on discovering the foetus was female, there was a demand for abortion. Police promptly transported Pushpalatha to the government hospital, and also seized medical supplies, including tablets, syringes and drip bottles used in the illegal termination. Police said doctors in the government hospital performed the abortion and provided medical care to the woman. Anand, who had been serving as an ambulance driver on contract basis for nine years, resided in the health departments residential quarters with his wife and mother-in-law. Preliminary investigations revealed a well-organised operation where the woman from Mysuru underwent a sex determination test in a secluded place. Anand and his accomplices provided abortion pills and instructed her to visit a private lodge until labour pain began, at which point she was brought to the quarters for termination.

Karnataka: Ex-MLC asks Congress leader to withdraw from council contest

MYSURU: Rajya Kayaka Samajala Okoota state president and former MLC KC Puttasiddashetty said he will contest the South Teachers constituency election which will be held on June 3. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Shetty said former MLC Maritibbe Gowda, who has been elected for the past 24 years, did not care to solve the problems of teachers. Gowda had recently resigned as MLC and from the JDS, and joined the Congress. Now, he is contesting from the constituency. Gowda does not behave politely with those who come to visit him. Teachers, who were working on a contract basis, did not get salary increments, the old pension scheme has not been implemented, there is a shortage of teachers in government schools and the education department building has not been repaired for years. I will work hard to solve all these issues, he said. Stating that Gowda has made no contributions to the sector for the past 24 years, Puttasiddashetty appealed to him to withdraw from the contest. I appeal to Gowda to support me in the election. Gowda had won the MLC election due to our support. Now I appeal to him to withdraw from the election and support me, he said.

Will sex scandal cause cracks in JDS-BJP pact?

MYSURU: With the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna flaring up, the issue is likely to have an impact on the BJP-JDS alliance for the biennial elections to the Karnataka Legislative Council for six seats to be held on June 3. The two parties are facing the ongoing Lok Sabha election together. Even though the JDS and BJP have claimed that the alliance would continue for the Council, ZP/TP, and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections, the sex scandal has made the saffron party leaders rethink the tie-up with the regional party, according to sources. The issue is in constant media glare, and the public opinion is also against Prajwal. A few BJP leaders want the top brass to rethink the alliance, said a source. This comes even as the BJPs top leadership is trying to portray that all is well in the alliance. Meanwhile, Congress leaders are using the sex scandal to target the BJP and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have directly targeted PM Modi for campaigning for Prajwal ahead of the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Rahul even called Prajwal a mass rapist and flayed Modi for his silence on the issue. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah even accused the Centre of helping Prajwal flee the country. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, however, turned the tables on the Congress, maintaining that Prajwal was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019 when the JDS was in an alliance with the Grand Old Party. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi pressed for the arrest of Prajwal. However, the scandal is almost certain to affect the JDS-BJP alliance, and its impact is likely to be felt within the next few days as the saffron party is set to take an important decision regarding the alliance for the Council polls, say insiders. Informed sources revealed that most of the BJP state leaders are upset with the sex scandal and are not so keen on continuing the alliance. A section of the BJP leaders maintained that they accepted the alliance for the Lok Sabha Polls after the high command forced it on them so that the party repeats the 2019 performance in Karnataka. BJP insiders pleading anonymity feel that it should not be a surprise if the party top brass says enough is enough and ends the alliance or will quietly contest the Council polls alone to minimise the damage the sex scandal has caused to the party. Top brass stitched the alliance without taking into consideration our opinion. Now it is up to them to take a call so that the party will not be targeted by the Congress and I.N.D.I.A bloc in the remaining four phases of Lok Sabha polls or in the ensuing Council elections, said a prominent BJP leader, adding that the party is being targeted and questioned for a crime not committed by its leaders.
