Fake videos of Modi aides trigger political showdown in India election

Fake videos of Modi aides trigger political showdown in India election Manipulated videos are taking centre stage as campaigning heats up in India's election, with fake clips involving two top aides of Prime Minister Narendra Modi triggering police investigations and the arrest of some workers of his rival Congress party. In what has been dubbed as India's first AI election, Modi said last week fake voices were being used to purportedly show leaders making statements that we have never even thought of, calling it a conspiracy o create tension in society. Indian police -- already investigating the spread of fake videos showing Bollywood actors criticizing Modi -- are now investigating a doctored online clip that showed federal home minister Amit Shah saying the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party will stop certain social guarantees for minorities, a subject sensitive for millions of voters. Shah retorted on X, posting his original and the edited fake speech and alleging -- without providing any evidence -- that the main opposition Congress was behind the video it created to mislead the public. The minister said directions have been issued to the police to address this issue. Indian police arrested at least nine people, including six members of Congress' social media teams, in the states of Assam, Gujarat, Telangana and New Delhi last week for circulating the fake video, according to police statements. Five of the Congress workers were released on bail, but the most high-profile arrest made by the cyber crime unit of New Delhi police came on Friday, when they detained a Congress national social media coordinator, Arun Reddy, for sharing the video. New Delhi is one region where Shah's ministry directly controls police. Reddy has been sent into three-day custody. The arrest has sparked protests from Congress workers with many posting on X using the #ReleaseArunReddy tag. Congress lawmaker Manickam Tagore said the arrest was an example of authoritarian misuse of power by the regime. Congress' head of social media, Supriya Shrinate, did not respond to messages and an email seeking comment. MISINFORMATION India's election from April 19 to June 1 will be the world's largest democratic event. With nearly a billion voters and more than 800 million internet users, tackling the spread of misinformation is a high stakes job. It involves round-the-clock monitoring by police and election officials who often issue take down orders to Facebook and X as investigations start. In India's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, more than 500 people keep tabs on online content, flagging controversial posts and coordinating with social media companies for their removal when needed, police chief Prashant Kumar told Reuters on Saturday. Another fake video that sparked a storm last week showed Yogi Adityanath, the state's chief minister, criticizing Modi for not doing enough for families of those who died in a 2019 militant attack. Though fact checkers said the video was created using different parts of an original clip, state police called it an AI generated, deepfake. Using internet address tracking, state police arrested a man named Shyam Gupta on May 2 who had shared the fake video post on X a day earlier, receiving over 3,000 views and 11 likes. The police have accused Gupta of forgery and promoting enmity under Indian law provisions that can carry a jail term of up to seven years if convicted. Reuters could not reach him as he is currently serving a 14-day custody period. This person is not a tech guy. Had he been tech savvy, arresting him quickly would not have been possible, said police officer Kumar.

Abhishek Banerjee Expresses Willingness for Congress Alliance

Abhishek Banerjee Expresses Willingness for Congress Alliance Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee said his party was keen on an alliance with the Congress, for which he even went to meet Rahul Gandhi at his residence at 6 am. Abhishek, the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and heir apparent to the party, asserted that Trinamool Congress candidates are the true representatives of the INDIA bloc in West Bengal. ''Had I not been serious, I would not have rushed to Rahul Gandhi's residence in Delhi at 6 am. We were willing to have an alliance with the Congress in Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal, and despite state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's barbs at our party for months, we did not react for a long time,'' he said on Saturday. ''We gave Congress time till December but we could not wait indefinitely as we had to make preparations. Till December 31, 2023, not a single spokesperson of our party, including Mamata Banerjee, reacted to what Choudhury was saying,'' he added. Banerjee, the MP of Diamond Harbour, said the seat-sharing talks failed because of the state Congress' belligerence.

More migration expected from Congress in Delhi

NEW DELHI : Today, as the newly-appointed Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee interim chief Devender Yadav officially assumes the mantle for the post, we can expect interesting scenes at the Congress headquarters. After the former occupier of the Delhi Congress chiefs chair, Arvinder Singh Lovely, and a band of other rebel Congress leaders, former MLAs, and AICC observers joined the BJP on Saturday, all eyes are now on the rest of the leaders among the 35 ex-MLAs who had expressed sympathy with the former Delhi Congress chief. Party leaders have said todays event is crucial for the city unit of the grand old party as it attempts to show strength and weigh the loyalty among its members. The intention behind the event is to communicate to the public that the Congress will endure, leaders claim. For this reason, all national and state-level leaders, and district and block-level workers of Delhi have been invited to attend the programme at the Congress headquarters. It will become clear who our loyalists are, especially at a time when Lovely has joined the BJP along with three of the rebel leaders, a senior leader said. Party leaders also murmured that there are speculations that Lovely will try to take his faction along into the BJP folds. So, all those who met the former DPCC chief following his resignation from the party are being monitored, they said. Lovely had claimed that 35 former Congress legislators had come in his support after his resignation. Three among them resigned from the party in the days that followed. Lovely had, earlier, maintained that he will not resign from the Congress primary membership. Yet, days after stepping down from the post of the Delhi Congress president, in protest against the partys alliance with the AAP and candidatures from the Delhi Lok Sabha seats, Lovely crossed over to the rival BJP on Saturday. He had resigned from the post on last Sunday. The three other leaders who joined the BJP treading Lovelys footsteps, are former Congress MLAs, Rajkumar Chauhan, Neeraj Basoya, Naseeb Singh, all quiting the party citing similar reasons.

Days before Delhi goes to polls, Lovely, four others join BJP

NEW DELHI : Barely 20 days before polling in Delhi, Arvinder Singh Lovely, who recently stepped down from the post of Delhi Congress president, joined the BJP on Saturday along with four other party leaders. We are connected to people in all 70 Delhi Assembly constituencies. After resigning, I thought of sitting at home with honesty, but all of them said that I should join a strong party to fight for Delhi and the country, Lovely said after joining the saffron ranks. He said it was not just five of them but a long queue of Congress people, who have already decided.... to fight for the people of Delhi in coming days. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief JP Nadda. The new BJP entrant thanked the top leadership and stated that PM Modi gave them an opportunity when they were politically lost. The four others who joined the saffron party, in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Puri, included former Congress MLAs Rajkumar Chauhan, Neeraj Basoya, Naseeb Singh and Delhi youth Congress chief Amit Malik. While Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva welcomed the Congress leaders into the party, presenting them with saffron scarves, and flower bouquets, and issuing them BJP membership slips, Minister Puri stated that the popularity of these dignitaries joining the BJP is undeniable, and their inclusion will no doubt strengthen BJP in Delhi. AAP has done nothing for the development of Delhi during its tenure, leading to deteriorating conditions, said Puri. In the elections, not only will BJP win, but will also take significant steps for Delhis development. Lovely joined the BJP in 2017 but returned to Congress soon. He was appointed the president of the Delhi unit of the Congress in August 2023, replacing Anil Chaudhary. The Congress has not been able to win even a single Assembly election or a seat in the Lok Sabha for a decade now. Sharp attrition in Cong camp Lovely joined BJP in 2017 but returned to Congress soon. He became the city unit chief in 2023. Congress has not won any Assembly election or an LS seat for a decade now. Lovely said it was not just 5 of them but a long queue of others, who have decided to fight for Delhi. He thanked PM Modi at a time when they were politically lost. Delhi Congress interim chief Devender Yadav described Lovely as an opportunist. The party doesnt care about such people. This is not the first time he has tried to sabotage the Congress, he said.

NEW DELHI : Two days after Delhi University announced to hold a Run for Viksit Bharat event with 5,000 students participants on May 8, OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has also sent an email to the students announcing a Viksit Bharat programme on Sunday. The email said the event, named Democracy in Action Programme, will give selected students an opportunity to work closely with the Chancellor of JGU, Naveen Jindal, a candidate for the Lok Sabha poll from the Kurukshetra constituency in Haryana. It aims to give a platform to the youth to contribute thoughts to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, the idea of a developed India by 2047, the 100th year of Independence. PMO push forced Uttarakhand to act against Patanjali

NEW DELHI : The Uttarakhand governments decision to revoke licences for 14 Patanjali Ayurved products occurred following a directive from the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) regarding appropriate action on an RTI complaint against Baba Ramdev for repeated violations of an Act dealing with misleading advertisements of Ayush products. In addition to suspending 14 products of the Baba Ramdev-owned Patanjali Ayurved, the state government initiated legal proceedings in the Haridwar CJM court for violating the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act on April 16. Both actions by the State Drug Licensing Authority were prompted by the PMOs directive, which instructed the Ayush ministry on January 24 to take necessary measures. Patanjali advertisement case: SC raps Uttarakhand State Licensing Authority for inaction The PMOs directive to take action against Ramdev followed after RTI activist Dr. K V Babu wrote to the Prime Ministers Office on January 15, highlighting Patanjali Ayurveds repeated infringements of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. The PMO directed authorities to inform Babu about the action taken. In response to Babu, the State Drug Licensing Authority (SDLA) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, acknowledged that the PMO had instructed them to investigate his complaint and take appropriate action. It is to be informed that Dr. Babu KV has complained about misleading advertisements of certain medicines manufactured by Divya Pharmacy and Patanjali Ayurved Limited, said the response dated April 23. Babu received the response on April 30. The response noted that numerous complaints were received, and warnings/clarifications/notices were issued to the concerned pharmacies several times. However, despite these warnings, misleading advertisements related to certain medicines persisted, prompting the SDLA to take disciplinary action under the Drug and Cosmetic Act. Dr. Mithilesh Kumar, Joint Director of SDLA, stated that disciplinary action was taken under the Drug and Cosmetic Act Rule 159 for not following instructions regarding the said medicines. Additionally, cases were filed under the Drug and Magic Remedies Act against the operators of the pharmacy in the Haridwar CJM court on April 16, 2024. Babu, who has tirelessly pursued action against Ramdev for the past two years, expressed his frustration with the state authorities lack of action, necessitating intervention from the PMO and the Supreme Court. The state government, which faced criticism from the Supreme Court for failing to act against Patanjali Ayurved despite repeated violations, informed the apex court on April 30 about the measures it had taken. It also issued an apology and pledged not to disobey any orders of the Supreme Court deliberately or wilfully.

Afghan diplomat steps down over defamation and personal attacks

NEW DELHI: Amid allegations of being apprehended with 25 kg of gold smuggled from Dubai to Mumbai on April 25th, the lone female Afghan diplomat in India, Zakia Wardak, resigned from her position on Saturday. However, Afghanistans Consul General in Mumbai, Wardak, attributes her resignation to defamation and personal attacks. It is with great regret that I announce my decision to step down from my role at the consulate and Embassy of Afghanistan in Mumbai, effective May 5th, said Wardak on Saturday. In her resignation, Wardak mentioned facing personal attacks over the past year aimed at her, her family, and even extended relatives. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) apprehended the 58-year-old Wardak on April 25th after she disembarked from an Emirates flight from Dubai. She, along with her son-in-law, crossed the green channel and was close to the exit when stopped. Wardak was reportedly subjected to a physical check, during which the gold bars were discovered concealed in her customised jacket, leggings, knee caps, and waist belt. The gold was worth Rs 18.6 crore. In her resignation, Wardak stated that the personal attacks prevented her from effectively carrying out her work. It has demonstrated the challenges faced by women in Afghan society who strive to modernize and bring about positive changes amidst ongoing propaganda campaigns. Wardak further stated that the persistent and coordinated nature of the attacks aimed at defaming her had surpassed a tolerable threshold. It had become increasingly clear that the public narrative unfairly targeted the only female representative within this system, rather than focusing on constructive assistance and support, said Wardak.

CJI DY Chandrachud calls for global efforts to combat juvenile cybercrimes

NEW DELHI : Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Saturday said juvenile justice systems must recognise its vulnerabilities and enhance international cooperation by sharing best practices to tackle growing digital crimes involving minors. The CJI made the observation in Nepal where he is on a three-day official visit at the invitation of Chief Justice of Nepal Bishwombhar Prasad Shrestha. Addressing a gathering at the National Symposium on Juvenile Justice in Nepal, Chief Justice Chandrachud said, When discussing juvenile justice, we have to recognise the vulnerabilities and unique needs of children embroiled in legal conflicts and ensure that our justice systems respond with empathy, rehabilitation, and opportunities for reintegration into society. He also pointed out that the children are often driven towards delinquent behaviour by complex societal challenges like economic disparities and social inequalities. Family breakdowns resulting from issues like domestic violence or poverty can leave children without the necessary guidance, making them more susceptible to negative influences, the CJI noted. Citing the momo challenge he said that it was a viral hoax that spread through social media platforms in 2019, targeting children and adolescents. This hoax purported a series of escalating dares, including self-harm or suicide, although it was later debunked. Its rapid dissemination highlights the susceptibility of juveniles to online dangers. There is a need for proactive measures to educate and safeguard young individuals in the digital age, emphasising digital literacy, responsible online behaviour, and effective parental guidance as crucial components in mitigating cyber-related risks, Chandrachud said. Highlighting that a holistic approach is needed and it was the need of the hour, the CJI said, the correlation between economic resources and juvenile delinquency needs to be addressed. The CJI also appreciated the efforts of the Supreme Court of Nepal, the Secretariat of the Central Child Justice Committee, and UNICEF Nepal for organising a symposium that not only fosters discourse but underscores a collective commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children, who epitomise the future of innovation, growth, and humanity.

Trinamool video claims sexual harassment cases an attempt to defame Bengal

KOLKATA : Amid the row over incidents in Sandeshkhali where allegations of sexual abuse against TMC leaders have surfaced, the TMC released a video on social media, claiming that allegations were a conspiracy by the BJP to defame West Bengal ahead of Lok Sabha polls. In the purported video, a man, who claimed to be a BJP mandal president in Sandeshkhali, was heard saying that Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the Opposition in the sssembly, is behind the whole conspiracy. The man alleged in the video that Adhikari had asked him and other BJP leaders of the area to instigate three-four local women to level allegations of rape against three TMC leaders, including Shahjahan Sheikh. The man was also heard saying that Nandigram MLA Adhikari himself had planted guns at a house in Sandeshkhali, which was later shown as the seizure by Central agencies. Adhikari could not be contacted for his comment. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the shocking Sandeshkhali sting shows how deep the rot is within the BJP. In their hatred for Bengals progressive thought and culture, the Bangla-Birodhis orchestrated a conspiracy to defame our state. Banerjee also said, History will witness how Bengal will rise in rage against Delhis conspiratorial regime and ensure their bishorjon (immersion). RJD chief Lalu tried to save those behind Godhra train carnage: PM Modi

PATNA : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday alleged that RJD chief Lalu Prasad tried to shield those who were responsible for burning more than 60 kar sevaks by setting up the Banerjee committee to probe the 2002 Godhra train burning incident. Addressing an election rally in Darbhanga, Modi said the opposition always pursued appeasement politics, and it was the reason the father of Bihars shehzada (referring to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav) had tried to save those who were responsible for the Godhra arson. After all, it was the rule of Sonia madam, PM said. He recalled that Lalu who was the then Railway Minister had constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the Godhra train arson, which under his influence gave a report that exonerated those guilty of the arson. He said that the court dumped the report. PM alleged that Congress was trying to give reservation to Muslims by cutting into quotas of SCs, STs and OBCs, even by going against the sentiments of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and backstabbing B R Ambedkar. Since these deprived sections are disillusioned with INDIA bloc, the alliance is now trying to give reservation to Muslims by cutting into their quotas, he added. Targeting Tejashwi for his comment on X in which he pointed out all three service chiefs of the armed forces are Hindus, PM said that now even the religion of service chiefs was counted and asked whether anybody while remembering the martyrdom of Captain Abdul Hamid looked him from the prism of religion. Without naming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi, PM said, There is a shehzada in Delhi and one in Patna, both of whom think of the country as their fiefdom. Addressing a rally at Palamu in Jharkhand, Modi said the Pakistan government is praying Congress prince to become PM, but strong India wants strong government only. He said, Leaders of JMM and Congress have collected huge assets through corruption, but I dont even have even a bicycle or house of my own.

Sorry state of school mathematics

Some years ago, during a private conversation, the education minister of a western country urged me to help her school-going daughter overcome her phobia of mathematics. Her request brought home the stark truth that the teaching of mathematics at the level of schools is not in good shape. My own memories of learning mathematics are not very edifying. Of course, exceptions occurred when I had two very fine teachers in grades 8 and 9, respectively. But the rest of my school years were rather disappointing. Do I stand isolated with such memories? The answer is resoundingly in the negative. Why has such a situation prevailed with such consistency for so long in so many parts of the globe? I have, over the years, conducted many experiments to try and figure out why. I have tried to find ways to help rectify the problem. The biggest stumbling block is the fact that most teachers of mathematics are rather clueless about the pedagogy to be adopted and the content to be chosen. This results in unimaginative teaching methods that rely on rote learning and heavy use of the blackboard. Contrary to the commonly held belief, mathematics is one of the most transdisciplinary of subjects and it permeates every level of human endeavour. This should provide more than ample advantages and opportunities to our teachers to make the learning interesting. Let us take the subject of the theorem of Pythagoras. Most teachers are unaware of the rich history of this theorem and how it connects with so many real-world matters. The theorem was known in many cultures and civilisations much before the time of Pythagoras. In India, there is documented evidence in several Sulba Sutras of the fact that the theorem was known with different methods of proof hundreds of years before the time of Pythagoras. More importantly, the theorem arose out of architectural needs of society. I am also aware that up until a few decades ago, in rural India, the theorem was used to demarcate agricultural fields in the shape of accurate rectangles. What is not so well known is that Pythagoras visited India. I have come across hard documentary evidence through Greek and European sources as also Indian sources of the visit. He was much influenced by Indian philosophy and particularly by Jainism. So much so that he became a vegetarian, stopped wearing leather garments and footwear and would have his supper before sundown. What also pains me is the fact that the theorem can be applied through a very easy and interesting experiment to calculate the circumference of the Earth. Yet I have not come across a single schoolteacher in India who practices any of the above. One other lacuna that most school learning programmes seem to make is to compel the entire class to learn in a uniform manner. It is so important to not make this error. It is important to understand that students learn best by doing practical things with which they can relate to real-life situations. Gandhiji and almost every major educator has emphasised that in the context of teaching less is more and what you do with your hands enters your heart. I have brought about much learning of arithmetic through games like treasure hunts. Here the clues require arithmetical thinking and calculations. The students have participated in teams, and they teach each other as well as enjoy the process of discovery. With some degree of patience and freedom to experiment much learning happens that gradually leads to conceptual understanding and creative thinking. I know that teachers complain about lack of time but all they need to do is to teach a few important and pivotal concepts instead of mechanically teaching everything. Siblings Found Deceased in Family Shop, Father's Whereabouts Unknown A 13-year-old girl and his younger brother were found dead inside their father's grocery shop in northwest Delhi's Keshav Puram area on Saturday, police said. The childrens father Manish, who is suspected to have killed the two siblings, is absconding and efforts are on to nab him, they said. A call regarding the incident was received at 7.15 pm, police said. Manish's wife told police that both the children had gone to school but they did not return home. Initially, she thought that they were with their father as he would often pick them up from their school, they said. ''She tried to contact Manish but his mobile phone was not reachable. In the evening, when other family members opened the shutter of their shop, they found the two siblings lying inside in an unconscious condition,'' an officer said. They were taken to hospital where doctors declared them dead, he said, adding that their school bags were also lying inside the shop, located on the ground floor of their house. According to a police officer, it is suspected that Manish killed his children by giving them some poisonous substance or by smothering them. ''The matter is being investigated from all possible angles and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem,'' the officer said, adding the actual cause of death will be ascertained only after the report comes. During investigation, it was found that Manish was upset due to some financial issue, however, further probe is underway. The statements of the family members have been taken, police said. The CCTVs in the locality are being scanned and teams were formed to locate Manish, police said.

One soldier killed, four injured in terror attack on IAF convoy in Pooch, weeks before LS polls in region

NEW DELHI: An Indian Air Force (IAF) soldier was killed and four others were injured after militants attacked an IAF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Saturday. The attack in Poonch, located within the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, occurred mere weeks ahead of the region's scheduled vote in the sixth phase on May 25. The IAF issued an update via X, writing: In the ensuing gunfight with terrorists, the Air Warriors fought back by returning fire. In the process, five IAF personnel received bullet injuries and were evacuated to the nearest military hospital for immediate medical attention. One Air Warrior succumbed to his injuries later. An Indian Air Force vehicle convoy was attacked by militants in the Poonch district of J&K, near Shahsitar. Cordon and search operations are underway presently in the area by local military units. The convoy has been secured, and further investigation is under progress. Indian Air Force (@IAF_MCC) May 4, 2024 Officials said five security personnel were injured, two of them critically, when four terrorists opened fire on IAF vehicles moving towards Sanai Top in Poonch's Surankot area in the evening. One of the critically injured soldiers later succumbed at a military hospital during treatment, they said. In the process, five IAF personnel received bullet injuries, and were evacuated to the nearest military hospital for immediate medical attention. One Air Warrior succumbed to his injuries later. Further operations are on by the local security forces, it said in another post. The terror attack took place around 6:15 pm when the troops were returning to the air force station from Jaranwali. The officials suspect the involvement of the same group of terrorists who ambushed troops in adjoining Bufliaz on December 21 last year, leaving four soldiers dead and three injured. One of the trucks in the IAF convoy bore the maximum brunt of the attack, with several bullets hitting its windscreen and side. The terrorists, who were armed with AK assault rifles, are believed to have fled into the nearby forests, the officials said. Reinforcements from the Army and police have been rushed to the area and a massive search and cordon operation has been launched to track down and neutralise the terrorists, they said, adding that there has been no contact with the fleeing terrorists so far. Police, assisted by paramilitary forces, had been carrying out searches in Poonch town since Friday, following inputs about the movement of suspected persons. However, no one was arrested during the operation, the officials said. The border district of Poonch, along with adjoining Rajouri, has witnessed some major terrorist attacks over the past two years, signalling the return of terror activities to the region, which was once cleared of terrorism and remained peaceful between 2003 and 2021. The latest incident in the Pir Panjal region follows the killing of government employee Mohd Razaq, brother of an Army personnel, by terrorists in Rajouri's Kunda Top on April 22 and village defence guard Mohd Sharief in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur on April 28. Police have released pictures of two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, including suspected Pakistani national Abu Hamza, involved in the murder of Razaq and announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for information leading to his arrest. The Bufliaz ambush in December last year came weeks after a major gunfight in the Dharmsal belt of Bajimaal forest in Rajouri that left five Army personnel, including two captains, dead. Two terrorists, including top LeT commander Quari, were also killed in the two-day gunfight. Quari was said to be the mastermind behind several attacks, including the killing of 10 civilians and five Army personnel in the district. The stretch between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz on the boundary of Rajouri and Poonch is densely forested and leads to Chamrer forest and then Bhata Dhurian forest, where five soldiers were killed in an ambush attack on an Army vehicle on April 20 last year. In May last year, five more Army personnel were killed and a major-rank officer was injured in Chamrer forest during an anti-terrorist operation. A foreign terrorist was also killed in the operation. In 2022, five Army personnel were killed when terrorists carried out a suicide attack on their camp at Pargal in the Darhal area of Rajouri district. Both the terrorists involved in the attack were eliminated. In 2021, nine soldiers were killed in two attacks by terrorists in the forested region. While five Army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), were killed on October 11 in Chamrer, a JCO and three soldiers were killed on October 14 in a nearby forest. No HC Nod for Underage Girl Keen on NEET

HYDERABAD: A two-judge panel of the Telangana High Court refused relief to a 16-year-old girl wanting to take the NEET medical entrance despite being underage. The panel of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J. Anil Kumar was hearing a petition filed by Rithika Monika, represented by her mother, who contended that her childs performances in Class 10 and Intermediate showed that she was an extraordinarily gifted student. The panel called upon senior advocate L. Ravichander as amicus to assist the court. He pointed out that the regulations indeed prescribed inhibition whereby a candidate was required to be 17 years old as of December 31 and that the present petition was in the nature of seeking a mandamus contrary to the statute. The panel earlier voiced sympathy for the candidate but was also aware that entertaining such a petition could open the floodgates of multiple claimants. The panel further recorded the judgmnts of different High Court, including Delhi and Chennai, cited by Pujitha, the counsel for the Medical Council of India, and dismissed the writ petition.

Modi Attacks Opposition, Recalls Godhra in Bihar Rally

NEW DELHI: In one of his fiercest election speeches in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday raked up the 2002 Godhra train arson, an issue that he rarely mentions even at such events, to attack the Congress-led UPA and the then railways minister and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav for practicing appeasement politics at a rally in Bihars Darbhanga. Earlier in the day, the PM addressed two rallies in Jharkhands Palamu and Lohardaga and later in the evening, he held a roadshow in Uttar Pradeshs Kanpur, where he continued his attack on the Opposition over corruption, votebank politics and attempts to change the Constitution for providing reservations to Muslims. Addressing his third rally of the day in Bihars Darbhanga, Modi raked up the 2002 Godhra train arson issue and accused Lalu Prasad of trying to save those responsible for burning alive more than 60 kar sevaks. It is because of this appeasement politics that the father of Bihar's shehzada (allusion to Tejashwi Yadav) had tried to save those who were responsible for the Godhra train burning incident, said Modi, adding that after all, it was the rule of Sonia madam. He (Lalu Prasad Yadav), who has himself been convicted (in fodder scam cases), was railway minister. He set up an inquiry committee and got a report, which exonerated those guilty of the horrendous crime. But the court threw the report away, said Modi. Kicking off his gruelling campaign schedule for the day from Palamu, Jharkhand, the PM took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi without naming him and said Pakistan wanted him as the Prime Minister, but India wants a strong country with a strong government. Maa Bharati's disrespect won't be tolerated anymore. New India's surgical and air strikes shook Pakistan, which was known for supporting terror attacks on India during the Congress regime The new India knows how to enter enemy territory and strike... Shaken by the surgical and air strikes, leaders in Pakistan are now praying that the Congress' shehzada' becomes PM of India... But our strong nation wants a strong government and leader, Modi said at the rally to campaign for the BJP candidate from Palamu, V.D. Ram. The Prime Minister said that earlier, after any terror attack on the country, the Congress-led governments were helpless. But that has changed under the strong BJP-led government at the Centre. Now, Pakistan is seeking help from the world to save the nation. He told the audience that their one vote had contributed to the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya after generations struggled for 500 years, as well as the scrapping of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. The Congress and the INDI alliance want to usurp your land. They want to snatch SC, ST and OBCs' quotas to provide reservations to Muslims by altering the Constitution. Till I am alive, I will not now allow any such design of the Congress to succeed, he asserted. In his address, the Prime Minister claimed that over 25-crore people came out of poverty in the last 10 years of the NDA government. He said: The Congress never bothered for the welfare of people. The party's shehzada was born with a silver spoon and poses for the camera when he visits the house of the poor. But it is my commitment to transform IndiaThere has been no blot of corruption on me in the past 25 years as Chief Minister and Prime Minister. I don't own a home or even a bicycle... The corrupt JMM and the Congress leaders have amassed huge wealth for their children. In Sisai, Lohardaga, Modi said the NDA government has unmasked corrupt forces and all those who indulged in corruption will face action under law in the next five years. Hitting out at jailed former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren without taking his name, Modi said: The former Jharkhand CM is behind bars for corruption... Modi is committed to wipe out the menace of corruption. In the next five years, all those who indulged in corruption will face legal action, he said. The INDI alliance leaders, neck-deep in corruption, hold rallies, including in Delhi and Ranchi, voicing support for corrupt people, which reveals their true character, the PM said. Modi also blamed the Congress for the backwardness of tribal districts, alleging that food grains used to rot in godowns during the UPA regime from 2004 to 2014, while tribal children died due to starvation. Modi said the NDA government ensured that the poor got access to the internet unlike the Congress, which was against it. Today's youths are the heroes of social media. The Congress had made the internet a thing for the rich, but Modi ensured it became available for the poor. We made mobile data affordable for all, he said. The PM also slammed the Congress for not taking any action against Maoists to preserve the party's votebank. He said: But, as long as Modi is alive, no one will be allowed to put tribal lives at risk. Modi also accused the Opposition parties of trying to rob SC, ST, OBC and tribals of reservations because of the disillusionment these deprived sections feel towards the INDIA bloc. The INDI alliance is trying to divert reservations to Muslims. They are going against the views of Babasaheb Ambedkar and first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, neither of whom was in favour of reservations on religious lines, Modi claimed. He also slammed Tejashwi Yadav for bringing up the Hindu Muslim narrative at rallies while talking about the Agnipath scheme and said, When we talk about the martyrdom of Captain Hameed, do we think of him as a Muslim? Without referring to Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav by their names, he said, There is a shehzada in Delhi and one in Patna, both of whom think of the country as their jaagir (fiefdom). He added: Their mindset was exposed when they raised questions about the surgical strikes and spoke ill of the armed forces. A large crowd cheered for the Prime Minister at the Kanpur roadshow in Uttar Pradesh. Mr Modi visited the Gumati Gurdwara before starting his roadshow in support of the BJP's candidates for the Kanpur and Akbarpur Lok Sabha seats.
