Green revolution: Meet the next generation of Indian pitches

CHENNAI: Toss. Weather. Conditions. Pitch. Dew. Outfield. These are just some of the factors that have a significant say in the way a team approaches a match, irrespective of the format. Among the above, pitch takes prominence for how it behaves could dictate the pace at which play progresses. While cricket is still scratching the surface when it comes to data, significant technological advancements have been made in many other aspects, including the pitch. Whether it is drop-in or conventional, there are different types of pitches based on the soil used, and so on. Over the past decade or so, hybrid pitches, too, have come into practice, especially for the white-ball format. SISGrass, a UK-based synthetic turf manufacturer, has been a pioneer in the field not just in cricket but also in football, rugby and hockey. With over 650 hybrid pitches installed across the globe, including Dubai, where conditions are vastly different from England. And now, joining hands with Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA), they have installed four hybrid pitches on the square of the scenic venue at the foothills of the Dhauladhar Range and two pitches in the nets outside. While they are used just for practice at the moment, it is the first time a venue in the country has installed hybrid pitches. Now, what is a hybrid pitch and how is it different from a conventional surface? Paul Taylor, former England cricketer and International Sales Director, Cricket at SIS Grass, explains. There are different kinds of hybrid pitches. There is an artificial hybrid, a concrete base with a carpet on top and then a soil profile on top of that. There's a carpeted hybrid, which is a synthetic carpet. It's then filled with soil, and then grass grows within that soil. Then there's the stitched hybrid, which is what we do. It takes your existing natural turf pitch and we inject synthetic fibres into that surface. And the stitching is at 20*20m centres. It covers the whole pitch, and it extends beyond the stump lines by about a metre to make sure that the back foot contact for the bowlers is part of the system. The fundamental thing that is different about our pitch, is that it's still 95 percent a natural turf surface. There's only 5 percent of fibre injected into it, Taylor tells this daily. The stitching goes to a depth of 90mm but we can stitch deeper. In cricket, we only stitch to 90mm because that's all that's really needed. The fibre that we use is a polyethylene monofilament fibre. It's the latest technology in terms of how that's made. It's resilient and durable. It enhances performance. It doesn't fade in UV light and things like that. And it comes in different colours as well. We have a green fibre, a beige fibre, then a mixture of green and beige, so whatever the surface that we're stitching into, we can pick the suit, he adds. The 5 percent fibre is expected to keep the wear and tear in check; it also enables the grass to recover after a match. The fibres help the grass plant to become stronger. There's a natural air space around the fibre when it's injected, obviously, water will go down. And all the nutrients that are put onto cricket squares will also get down to the root. So the grass is a lot stronger, a lot more durable. You get up to three times the amount of cricket on one pitch that you would ordinarily get with a fully natural surface, says Taylor. However, when it comes to pitches, it is never one size fits all. The conditions in England, where SIS Grass began working in 2017, is very different from India, a country where different states will have different climatic conditions throughout the year. This is where the other factors like soil content and clay content come into play. It is different in different places. However, we have installed it in Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and so on. One of the things we noticed when we installed the pitches in the UK is that the moisture content within the soil profile needed to be about 40% to allow the injecting needles to inject the fibres. In India, because the clay content is a lot higher, I think in Dharamsala it was around 66%, the moisture content we had to get into the profile was anywhere between 60-80%. Again, it's all part of learning. We now know how to install in the north of the country, but installing it in Mumbai and installing in Kolkata could be very different. We can adapt how we install to suit the conditions, Taylor explains. The type of grass used too plays a crucial role based on the climatic conditions, even more so in a country like India where cricket is played all throughout the year. What we need to understand is the different types of grass. The squares over here tend to be Bermuda grass rather than Rye grass, which is what they are predominantly in the UK. So the outfield at Dharamsala is a Rye grass outfield and by the way, it looks beautiful. It's absolutely stunning when I was there last time. The issues they have had previously have been rectified. Credit to the ground staff for getting that back. The other thing that is worth mentioning is we actually have a system in that outfield called SISAir, which is a drainage system and an aeration system specifically designed to improve the outfield performance. That is now working well, it has made a big difference to the outfield. That's a first for India as well. So, Dharamsala is leading the way in terms of cricket technology, said Taylor. I think what we're looking to work out at the moment is in what parts of the country, and times of year that we can install these pitches. They only take one pitch, and will take about four hours to install. So it's quite a quick process as long as we've got the appropriate moisture content in that pitch. So the preparation of those pitches is the important thing from our side. If we can get the moisture content in, we can actually stitch the pitch in four hours. We're actually developing a new machine that's going to be able to stitch in three hours. That is the plan, which will be developed over the next few months. But the universal machine will stitch one pitch in four hours. So the installation at Dharamsala took about two weeks, and that's mainly through finding out about the conditions about the soil content, the moisture content, the clay content. So there's a little bit of research initially over the first three or four days before we actually start to work. The challenge, however, remains when it comes to red-ball cricket. At the moment, they have the ICC's approval for using hybrid surfaces in white-ball cricket but not in tests. However, they have gotten approval to use hybrid pitches in the 2024 England County season on a trial basis. The practice surfaces at the HPCA Stadium are put to use on Saturday as the Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings prepare for their return leg contest to be played on Sunday. But for SIS Grass, this is just the beginning. Mumbai and Ahmedabad are next in line but Taylor wants to take the technology to the masses. It's a product that we want to cascade throughout the cricketing network in India. So that's working with schools, local clubs, local communities and so on. Yes, it enhances the professional game. More importantly, from my perspective, it enhances the grassroots game as well. Because if we can get young players playing on the same sort of surfaces as the international players, that's got to be a bonus for development of the game in India, says Taylor. For HPCA, it is about embracing the new technology and having the best of the facilities at the venue, ensuring that the youngsters can give themselves the best chance to improve on their game. The pitches offer a consistent, smooth, even playing surface to the players, especially the youngsters, which will enhance their skills. This should be implemented in other grounds across the country so that players are well versed with playing on these grassy wickets, which are the future of the game, Avnish Parmar, HPCA Secretary, told this daily.

Congress giving benefit of old pension scheme to over 4k employees , says Himachal CM Sukhu

Congress giving benefit of old pension scheme to over 4k employees , says Himachal CM Sukhu Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that despite the financial crunch, the Congress government will deliver the benefits of the old pension scheme to 1.36 lakh currently employed government workers. Addressing an election rally in Nalagarh of Solan district on Saturday, he said that in the very first cabinet meeting after the formation of the Congress government in the state, he fulfilled his election promise and secured the future of lakhs of government employees by restoring the old pension scheme. Today more than 4 thousand employees are taking benefit of the old pension scheme. The Chief Minister said that Rs 9000 crore of NPS is still stuck with the Central Government, a fight is being fought to get it back, said the CM. He mentioned that the state government has also given a four per cent dearness allowance to the government employees. Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that when the BJP was not successful in forming the government with the public votes, an attempt was made to capture it on the basis of money, but the plans of the BJP could not be fulfilled. He said that the Congress government is completely stable and will definitely complete its five-year term. Jairam Thakur's dreams of Munger Lal becoming the Chief Minister will never be fulfilled. Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that those who fill their houses by digging rivers and ravines can never be servants of the public. He said that BJP MP Suresh Kashyap did not contribute anything to the development of the area. When the disaster struck, Kashyap did not even write a letter to any Union Minister to provide financial help to Himachal Pradesh. no BJP MP went to the Union Ministers to ask for financial help from the Central Government. The state government changed the law for 22 thousand families affected by the disaster and gave a package of Rs 4000 crore from its own resources. He said that now BJP candidates are asking for votes in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of their work. The state government has given a big relief to 1.60 lakh truck operators by waiving off the penalty and interest on passenger and goods tax, he added. He said that these goods carrier operators had to suffer losses during the Corona period, in view of which the state government adopted a humanitarian approach. The CM emphasised that he had reached the position of Chief Minister from an ordinary family and started his political career from the eleventh class. He lauded himself saying that in his 40 years of political career, he never compromised on his principles. That is why after becoming the Chief Minister, the only objective is to serve the public. He said that the state government has earned an additional income of Rs 850 crore from the auction of liquor vends. Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that keeping in mind the problems of the common people, the state government made changes in the revenue laws and organised Revenue Lok Adalats across the state. He said that more than one lakh Itkaal and more than seven and a half thousand Takseem cases have been settled in these Revenue Lok Adalats. On this occasion, Education Minister Rohit Thakur, Congress Party's Lok Sabha candidate Kasauli MLA Vinod Sultanpuri, Congress leader Baba Hardeep Singh, District Congress President Shiv Kumar Sharma and party officials were present. Congress slams Kangana Ranaut for her controversial remarks, advises her to correct historical facts

Congress slams Kangana Ranaut for her controversial remarks, advises her to correct historical facts The Congress hit back at actor-turned-politician and BJP leader Kangana Ranaut for her controversial remarks against its leaders Vikramaditya Singh and Rahul Gandhi and advised her to correct historical facts. While addressing a public rally in the Sundernagar area of Mandi Parliamentary Constituency, Kangana took a jibe at Vikramaditya Singh and Rahul Gandhi over dynasty politics and said that both of them have a magic stick for development and talk only about non-practical things. Responding to this, the Congress leaders dare Kangna to come up with facts and give data of any BJP leader who has contributed their personal property to the nation. The National Media Coordinator for the AICC, Amrit Kaur, said that wherever Kangana Ranaut goes, she creates a mess. Wherever Kangana Ranaut goes, it just creates a mess. Earlier, she created a mess in Bollywood, and now she is creating a mess in Mandi. Her statements are ridiculous; I don't know how she was made a candidate from Mandi by the BJP. Earlier, Sunny Deol was MP and he did not appear after being elected, the same Kangana is going to do. People here want to know where she was during the Himachal floods. She is going to lose by a very big margin. She doesn't have anything to say; she is in frustration and is speaking badly about anything; she doesn't have any contribution to the state. I got to know that she had registered an FIR against her neighbours here; we don't want to give much importance to her, she said. Kaur said that Kangana should first check the facts about her party leaders and speak about dynastic politics. She also questioned her qualifications on which she got a BJP ticket from Mandi. If she says that Rahul is interested in politics, I want to ask her what her contribution to the state is and on what basis she got a ticket from the BJP. What is the qualification for which you got a ticket and why will the people of the state vote for you instead of electing Vikramaditya Singh? She has been fighting and creating a mess everywhere; I want to ask her: will she create the same after she is going to get defeated? Kaur added. The AICC spokesperson for Himachal Pradesh, Vikram Lohia, said that Kangana Ranaut is using very controversial, derogatory language and distorted facts about Indian history. The language used by Kangan Ranaut is unfortunate. I want to tell you that the language you are trying to use is derogatory language against Indira, Sonia and Rahul ji. You claim to be the daughter of Himachal Pradesh and at the time of great need, you were not with the people of Himachal. You tried to earn money in Maharashtra and Mumbai instead of being supportive of the people, said Lohia. You have been talking of dynasty politics; can't you see the family politics of Anurag Thakur in your party? I would appeal to the people of Himachal Pradesh to elect an MP who will remain with you and serve you. I hope the day will not come here where people will have to paste posters to find out MP, he added.Amit Bawa, National Media Coordinator of the AICC, said that Kangana Ranaut will have to correct the facts of history and the people of Mandi will reply to her through votes. I would like to tell you that Kangana Ranaut has neither knowledge of Indian history nor does she know anything about the geography of Himachal Pradesh. She is talking about Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel; it is a historical fact that he died in 1950. The Indian government was formed in 1952, and I got to hear her speech. I would suggest she read the history of classes 9 and 10. She says India gained independence in 2014, sometimes she compares Moti Lal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru with Adani and Ambani. On behalf of the people of the Mandi area of Himachal Pradesh, I want to ask her that Adani and Ambani are trying to capture the property of the nation and Moti Lal Nehru had donated his property for the growth of the country, Bawa said. Apples and oranges can't be compared. She needs to correct her facts. The people of Mandi want to know her and make it clear in public in Mandi if she can name a single leader of the BJP who has donated land or property or a single penny for the country. We have numerous such people and leaders. During the disaster, our Chief Minister himself initiated to contribute to the flood-hit people in the state, he added. I want to ask the BJP that they have been propagating 'Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao'; wrestlers were protesting against the BJP leader for sexual harassment and I want to ask Kangana Ranaut why she was mum and silent on this issue. She is questioning Sonia Gandhi ji; she sacrificed her husband for the nation and today she is there for the unity and integrity of the nation. As far as she talks about family politics, she should see Anurag Thakur first. Everyone knows the contribution of Virbhadra Singh in HP so there is no comparison of Kangna with Vikramaditya Singh here. The people of Mandi will reply in elections, Bawa said further. (ANI)

IPL 2024: We Will Stick To Winning Combination For CSK Clash, Says PBKS Spin Bowling Coach Sunil Joshi

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium: Experts have always opined not to change a winning combination and Punjab Kings will follow the wisdom handed down the ages when they take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings in Match 53 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium here on Sunday afternoon. On an upswing after two wins on the trot, Punjab Kings will face the five-time champions CSK for the second time within a few days as they attempt to move up from the seventh position they currently occupy in the standings and get into a position to challenge for a place in the Playoffs. Sunday's match is their first game at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala this season and PBKS spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi explained why his side enjoys travelling to Dharamsala for the IPL games. The ground in Dharamsala is one of the best grounds in the cricket world because of the location and the surface we get to play here. It's a fantastic ground, Joshi said at the pre-match press conference on Saturday. Punjab defeated Kolkata Knight Riders, chasing down the world T20 record total of 262 last week. Earlier this week, PBKS picked a big win over the Chennai Super Kings, chasing 163 with 7 wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare. Entering the contest with a positive mindset and on the back of two solid victories, Joshi said that his side will stick with the same playing combination. No, we do not think we will be making any changes. Because we want to keep up the winning squad, he said. The former Indian left-arm spinner further gave an update on skipper Shikhar Dhawan's injury status and also praised Sam Curran for taking over the leadership role effectively in Dhawan's absence. Dhawan's rehabilitation is on track. He is doing well. He is not available for the next game. Hopefully, he will be back for the final two games, Joshi said. Shikhar was also injured last year. He was playing well but Sam had to come up as captain because of his injury. Sam has come up as a leader yet again and he has stepped up with the team, he added. The tournament has reached a stage where all the teams are fighting to grab the top four spots and confirm a spot in the playoffs. Joshi insisted his side is focused on getting the right results and is not too focused on the points table calculations. The team conversations that we have had, our approach is to put in the best effort and to play to win the game. The table calculations will come on their own. We do not see that part very closely. What we look at is what are the areas we can do better, what we have not done over the past few games, what best we can do and how we can improve as a team. That is the conversation we have with the players, he said. Our plan of action is to keep winning. The challenge is always with the bat and ball. It's a good surface. I keep telling players to hold their horses and execute their skill, he signed off.

BJP will get double digit MP seats in Telangana, says Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad: Union Tourism Minister and Telangana BJP State president G Kishan Reddy here on Friday exuded confidence that the party would win double digit seats this time during Lok Sabha elections. Addressing leaders after welcoming IT Companies owners and employees at the State party office, he said the graph of BJP was increasing significantly every day and unable to digest it the Congress leaders launched a false campaign against the BJP. The BJP would win a majority of seats in Telangana because of Prime Minister Narendra Modis Tsunami across the country. The BRS has become helpless even before the completion of Lok Sabha elections while the Congress leaders were unable to visit the villages to do campaigning because of their failure to fulfill their promises given during the Assembly elections in 2023, he said. Kishan Reddy alleged the people in villages were facing acute shortage of water and power supply. Congress means cheating, deceiving and dynasty politics and it proved in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. The same thing is repeating in Telangana, he said. Referring to the Congress leaders Donkey Egg campaign against the BJP, Kishan Reddy woundered whether the party changed its election symbol - Hand to Donkey Egg. To cover up their failures in implementing half dozen guarantees promised during Assembly elections, the Congress was indulging in mud-slinging against the BJP. However, the people were observing everything to teach a fitting lesson to the Congress in the elections, he added.

Congress nominee Vikramaditya Singh invites BJP rival Kangana Ranaut to open debate on local issues Himachal Pradesh minister and Congress candidate from Mandi Lok Sabha seat on Wednesday challenged BJP nominee Kangana Ranaut for an open debate over their vision for the constituency. While addressing a press conference here, Singh said, ''Ours is a healthy democracy...she should take part in a debate and tell the people about her vision. I will also tell the people about the work which I have done for Mandi as well as my vision for the constituency.'' He also hit out at the actor over her speeches in poll meetings and said that whenever she goes she has only one agenda and that is to keep on repeating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's name. ''Though we have immense respect for PM Modi, she should at least tell the people about her vision instead of completely relying on the PM,'' the public works minister added. ''She says that she is a big actress...she should come forward and tell the people of Mandi about the work that she will be doing for them, and I believe that the youth, women, and people of Mandi will appreciate it,'' Singh said. ''I believe that this is the way to take things forward so that the people of Mandi can decide whom they want to be their leader from Mandi,'' he said. Singh claimed that Kangana has no knowledge about history and geography of the state. ''She just reads out the script that is handed over to her by her scriptwriters and has no reply when someone asks her a question,'' he said. Meanwhile, Kangana, who was addressing a gathering in Nankhari area in Mandi constituency, hit out at Singh and said that if former chief minister Virbhadra Singh was alive today, he would have scolded Vikramaditya Singh for making ''disrespectful statements'' against her and would have asked him to apologise to her. She said that he (Virbhadra Singh) would have been deeply hurt by the fact that the daughter of Himachal Pradesh was told that she is ''impure''. ''We can forgive him (Vikramaditya Singh) for saying that but we cannot give him the leadership,'' she added.

However, he betrayed everyone after securing their support, remarked Kharge, reflecting on Modi's campaign rhetoric. He lamented the plight of thecommonpeople who suffered the consequences ofdemonetization, while the affluent managed to safeguard their wealth through various means. We do not intend to name anybody, but Modi claims credit for everything, leaving us with no choice but to address him directly, he said. He highlighted Modi's pledges to unearth black money, deposit Rs 15 lakh in every citizen's account, double farmers' income, generate employment for2crore individuals annually, and curb inflation, all of which remain unmet. Contrasting Modi's record with Congress-governed states like Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh, Kharge asserted that the Congress party has deliveredonits promises, underscoring its commitment to fulfill electoral mandates. Touching upon historical parallels, Kharge recalled opposition to Indira Gandhi's initiatives by parties like the Swatantra Party, Congress (Organisation), and Bharatiya Jan Sangh. Hedrew parallels toModi's current rhetoric, accusing him of perpetuating baseless allegations akin to his predecessors. He criticized Modi's speeches, particularly his recent remarks about Congress confiscating women's Mangalsutra. Even in the era of the Nizam, no one dared to snatch away theMangalsutra. Is thisthe manner in whicha Prime Minister speaks? None of our previous Prime Ministers resorted to such language. During Congress's 55-year rule, we never resorted to such tactics; instead, we introduced initiatives like the Land Reforms Act, which aimed to empower the underprivileged by granting them land, he said. Modi's attempts to sow discord between Hindus and Muslims are evident, yet here, our communities stand united, he added. During a rally in Yadgir, Kharge accused Modi of favoring the wealthy over the impoverished. Pandit Nehru envisioned amenities and infrastructures asthe moderntemples that would benefit all segments of society. However, Modi has diverted attention to another temple and begun admonishing us. He alleges that Congress leaders failed to visit the Ram Mandir. We understand when to visit and where to visit to pay our respects, he said. He also questioned Modi performing religious rituals during Pran Pratista ceremonies. When I served as the revenue minister, we allocated funds to numerous Hanuman temples without any ulterior motives. Our actions were guided by respect for people's faith, not political gain. In contrast, Modi invokes the name of Lord Rama solely for electoral purposes, he remarked. Modi professes to oppose corruption, yet individuals facing charges now find refuge within his circle. Over 23 leaders who faced corruption allegations have aligned themselves with Modi's camp, some even attaining influential roles, he added.

Kangana Ranaut has no knowledge of history says Congress' Vikramaditya Singh Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi Vikramaditya Singh on Wednesday took a dig at Kangana Ranaut and said that she knows nothing about our country and its history. ...She (Kangana Ranaut) has no knowledge of history, geography, or statistics. Sometimes she says that the country gained independence in 2014 and sometimes she says that Subhash Chandra Bose was the first PM of the country. Leave aside the history of the country or the state, she doesn't even know the history of her party, said Vikramaditya Singh. He further stated that he did not want to make any statement on the BJP candidate. I am only asking her that we want to interact with you with a mandate and a vision with committed leadership, he added. He challenged Ranaut saying, I request Kangana Ranaut that come and debate with me at Mandi's Seri Manch. I will tell you about our vision and what work we have completed... BJP's 400-Seat Goal Linked to RSS 'Plan' to Eliminate Reservations, Congress Alleges

BJP's 400-Seat Goal Linked to RSS 'Plan' to Eliminate Reservations, Congress Alleges The Congress on Monday alleged that the BJP wants ''more than 400 seats'' so that they can amend the Constitution and fulfil the decades-long ''conspiracy'' of the RSS to abolish reservation. The main opposition party said this is the first time that a political party's goal is not only to win an election but also to secure more than 400 seats. The Congress and the BJP have been sparring over the issue. While addressing the election rallies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been rebutting the Congress charge and saying even if ''Babasaheb Ambedkar comes, the Constitution cannot be changed''. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Monday shared media reports on RSS-BJP leaders' remarks in the last few years on ''ending reservation'' and alleged that they have been trying to do away with the quota in education and jobs for the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBC). ''RSS-BJP have been opposing reservation for 100 years. For the last 10 years they have been continuously attacking reservation -- in 2015, RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat had talked about reviewing reservation and its need and time limit. ''In 2017, RSS leader Manmohan Vaidya said reservation should be removed. In 2018, (former) BJP MP C P Thakur had opposed Dalit reservation,'' Ramesh said in a post in Hindi on X. In 2021, former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur of the BJP had said the time had come to put an end to caste-based reservation, he said. ''You must be seeing that many BJP leaders are saying they want 'more than 400' seats so that they can amend Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution. These people have openly said so: Ananth Kumar Hegde, the BJP MP from Karnataka and a former Union minister; Arun Govil, the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate from Meerut; Lallu Singh, the BJP MP from Faizabad; Jyoti Mirdha, the BJP's Lok Sabha poll candidate from Nagaur,'' the Congress leader said on the microblogging platform. Ramesh said the people should note that this is the first time that the goal of a political party is not just to win an election but to emerge victorious in more than 400 seats. ''The BJP is a clear threat to our Constitution. It wants to amend the Constitution so that the decades-long conspiracy of the RSS to abolish reservation can succeed,'' he alleged. The Lok Sabha polls are being held in the country and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set a target of winning more than 400 seats. On the other hand, Prime Minister Modi accused the opposition party on Monday of planning to implement religion-based reservation in the country for the sake of vote-bank politics, while asserting that he will not let it happen. Modi alleged that this proposal of the Congress is for appeasing minorities as the SC, ST and OBC communities are now with the BJP. In another post, Ramesh said, ''Today in Patan, Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi brought out a copy of the Constitution of India and promised to uphold and protect it at all costs in full public view. The Indian National Congress is the true party of nationalism, constitutionalism, and justice - and we will never compromise on these principles.'' In yet another post, Ramesh also cited a debate in Parliament to hit out at the BJP over Prime Minister Modi's ''mangal sutra'' remarks. ''During the discussions in Parliament on the Union Budget on August 5th 1991, then MP Atal Behari Vajpayee made the following suggestions on how India could resolve its economic crisis. The only time that snatching mangalsutras was ever on the table was when Mr Vajpayee advocated for it! he said. ''Mr Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh heard him intently but thankfully studiously ignored his advice,'' Ramesh said. According to the excerpt shared by Ramesh, Vajpayee had said, ''There is about 10,000 tonnes of gold in our country, out of which 5,000 tonnes is hoarded and 5,000 tonnes have been brought into the country through smuggling. If we succeed to [...] get 2,000 tonnes of gold from the public - I am not talking of 5,000 tonnes of gold but only 2,000 tonnes of gold [...] it would be worth 36 billion American dollars. ''If we sell gold worth 25 billion dollars to clear our debts and invest the rest of gold in such a way that it would fetch us 10 per cent profit, then it would help us in overcoming the financial crisis,'' Vajpayee was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the country has seen through the ''sinister plot'' of trying to amend the Constitution and doing away with reservation because that has been the core philosophy of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Even in the BJP, it is no coincidence that leaders such as Jyoti Mirdha and Anant Hegde are talking about amending the Constitution, Shrinate said. ''What does it mean? It simply means denying people the right to reservation. It simply means acting against Dalits, tribals, backward classes and the poor in the general category. People have understood your sinister plot and will throw you out,'' she said.

Delhi Police registers FIR in Amit Shah doctored video case, Congress threatens similar action

Delhi Police registers FIR in Amit Shah doctored video case, Congress threatens similar action Soon after the Delhi Police summoned Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in a case of a doctored video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Congress warned of similar action against BJP leaders in Congress-ruled states and accused the BJP of spreading fake news and morphed videos during the election campaign. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate told the media that Revanth Reddy, who is also chief of the Telangana Pradesh Congress, is not afraid of such threats and will fight the BJP. ''If they believe they can intimidate Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, they are really living in a la-la land,'' she said. ''Revanth Reddy ji is a fighter, who fought the BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi), your B-team. We trounced them, we trounced you, and we ensured that you were relegated to the margins. You call him and you will have a good day,'' she told reporters at the party headquarters shortly after the Delhi Police action. ''They think we will keep sitting like this and not initiate any action. We will also launch action against all those. There will be FIRs in Karnataka, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, where the BJP is not in power,'' she said. The Delhi Police summoned Revanth Reddy on May 1 for questioning in a case of a doctored video of Shah circulating on social media and police in some BJP-ruled states also swung into action, making the first arrest in Assam. Shrinate said, ''The biggest example of an autocratic rule and an arrogant king is Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Modi is continuously lying about the Congress manifesto and if someone is allegedly editing your video and circulating it, you are arresting people based on that.'' ''But this country is not going to be scared by all these things. This country will take an account of unemployment and price rise. If you take action, then action will also be taken from our end,'' the Congress leader said. ''Prime Minister Modi should apologise to the people of this country on how he has been speaking lies on our manifesto, on reservation and the 'mangalsutra','' she said. The Congress social media head claimed that the truth is that after two phases of these polls, the country has decided to ''throw them out and send them home packing''. ''The people of the country have woken up and the truth is that they wanted to change the Constitution and that is why they want 400-plus seats. If you play FIR-FIR, then there will be FIRs on every wrong action of yours,'' Shrinate said, asserting that the Congress does not run fake news and claiming that it is the BJP which runs fake news. Shrinate claimed that Modi became prime minister ''only by lying to the countrymen and spreading false propaganda''. It is the BJP people who are experts in editing and using statements, she alleged, claiming that the saffron party recently ran a statement of Rahul Gandhi by cutting out SCs, STs, OBCs amd EWS. Now action will be taken against all of them, she warned. ''We will take all our proofs before the same Delhi Police, which is now investigating the AI speeches of the prime minister and Amit Shah. We will also take the manipulated tags of all such platforms to the Delhi Police. Then we will see if Amit Shah's police will wake up only for Amit Shah or will follow the law,'' Shrinate said. Congress leader Ponnam Prabhakar said, ''If such a video is there, then the BJP has made those to damage Rahul Gandhi's image. An investigation should be carried out.'' Notices have been issued to five members of the Telangana Pradesh Congress, including Revanth Reddy, who posted the video on X, sources said, adding that a team of the Delhi Police's Special Cell handed over a notice to the Chief Minister's Office on Monday. They have been asked to appear with their mobile phones, laptops, tablets or any other electronic device through which they have created, uploaded and tweeted the video on their X accounts, the sources said. Addressing a Congress rally at Sedam in Karnataka, Revanth Reddy said ''no one here is afraid'' of such notices and alleged that Modi is now using the Delhi Police to win elections. On Monday, the BJP also lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against the Congress, alleging that it circulated the ''deepfake and morphed'' video of Shah to derail the poll process and demanded strict action against the party. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said one person has been arrested in connection with the fake video.

Tibetan Girl Imprisoned for Freedom Advocacy Vows Continued Activism

Tibetan Girl Imprisoned for Freedom Advocacy Vows Continued Activism On October 21, 2015, a 15-year-old Tibetan girl along with her sister was picked up by Chinese authorities in the Tibetan county of Ngaba and put behind bars for three years for publicly displaying portraits of the Dalai Lama and demanding a ''free'' Tibet. In June last year, the girl, Namkyi, arrived in India weeks after entering Nepal following a 10-day arduous journey on foot with a ''firm'' resolve to aware people across the world about 'Chinese repression' in Tibet, according to her account. Namkyi, now 24, says she is currently studying at 'Sherab Gatsel Ling', an educational institution being run by the Tibetan government-in-exile in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala. ''What the Chinese government is showing to the entire world about Tibet is in total contrast to the real situation. The Tibetan people are living under increasing fear and repression,'' she told a small group of journalists. ''China has been trying to undermine Tibet's identity,'' she alleges. The Tibetan activists have been accusing China of denying religious freedom and trying to stamp out Tibet's cultural heritage and identity. Beijing has been rejecting the charges. ''I want to tell the world what is happening in Tibet. I want to be the voice of the Tibetan people to let the world know about their pain and anguish, about the Chinese repression,'' Namkyi said. The girl, born to a typical nomadic family in Charo village, also recalled her and her sister Tenzin Dolma's detention following their demonstration at a key locality in Ngaba, ''calling for 'Free Tibet' and seeking swift return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet''. ''Not more than 10 minutes into our march, four or five police officers came from behind and snatched the portraits (of the Dalai Lama) from our hands,'' she said about the October 21, 2015 protest. ''We did not let the portraits go from our hands and resisted the police action. Finally, the Police dragged us down the road and told us to be silent. But we shouted our slogans continuously,'' she said. ''They handcuffed our hands, put us into the police van, and took us away to the detention centre of Ngaba County. Then, they took us to another detention centre in Barkam city.'' Namkyi said she and her sister were subjected to severe torture. ''We were interrogated in a small room where a heater was switched on with excessive heat. Different interrogators asked various questions such as who incited us to hold the protest; where did we get the portraits of the Dalai Lama and whether we had any acquaintances from outside etc,'' she said. ''Despite mental and physical torture, we only responded that both of us freely decided to hold the protest, and no one incited us, and also that our family members knew nothing about it.'' Namkyi said the trial started nearly a year after the arrest. ''That day (when the trial began), we both saw each other for the first time since our arrest,'' she remembered, adding the court sent to prisons. ''After three months in prison, I worked in a labour camp where copper wires were produced, and my sister made cigarette boxes at first, and then we were shifted to a wrist-watch manufacturing camp,'' she said. ''Later, we learned that our family had sent food and clothes for us, but we never got anything from the prison authorities.'' ''On 21 October 2018, we were released from prison after completing the prison term,'' she added. Namkyi alleged that the Chinese authorities ''troubled'' her family members and relatives in view of the demonstration held by her and her sister. ''On May 13, 2023, I started my journey of escape with my aunt Tsering Kyi without telling anyone,'' she said adding they first crossed over to Nepal through a border point Namkyi said she came to Dharamshala on June 28 last year. In India for close to 10 months, she feared for the safety of her family members. ''I am worried that my family may be targeted,'' she said. Namkyi said her main aim now is to ''let the world know the real situation in Tibet.'' ''People are living in pathetic conditions in Tibet. I want to be their voice to the world. I want to visit various countries and spread and tell them what is going on in Tibet,'' she added. Namkyi said she had the opportunity to seek blessings of the Dalai Lama last year during which he underlined the need for working towards protecting the identity and cultural heritage of Tibet. After a failed anti-Chinese uprising in 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet and came to India where he set up the government-in-exile. The Chinese government officials and the Dalai Lama or his representatives have not met in formal negotiations since 2010. Beijing has been maintaining that it freed ''serfs and slaves'' from a brutal theocracy in Tibet and bringing the region on the path of prosperity and modernisation. China has in the past accused the Dalai Lama of indulging in ''separatist'' activities and trying to split Tibet and considers him as a divisive figure. However, the Tibetan spiritual leader has insisted that he is not seeking independence but ''genuine autonomy for all Tibetans living in the three traditional provinces of Tibet'' under the ''Middle-Way approach''. Relations between the two sides strained further due to protests against China in Tibetan areas in 2008.

Opposition blames EVMs for its defeat, says Anurag Thakur

Opposition blames EVMs for its defeat, says Anurag Thakur Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court's decision regarding EVMs. We welcome the decision of the Supreme Court. The opposition tried to spread confusion and blame EVMs for its defeat but now the Supreme Court has made it clear and has rejected the petition, he said. Slamming the INDI alliance, he said, My request to the opposition is that if they want to fight elections, then fight on issues, fight on ideology. We are working to take India forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Service, good governance and welfare of the poor are the identities of the Modi government. On the other hand, they must have changed the name from UPA to INDI alliance but the face and thinking are the same. The public is not ready to accept them, he added. Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi, he said, If he is getting defeated in Wayanad then he must try to fight from any other seat. If he is taking support from the banned organisations like SDPI and PFI then, it in itself raises a question that just to win elections he has demeaned himself to such a level. Earlier, Thakur expressed his enthusiasm and encouragement for voters amid the Lok Sabha elections, urging them to come out in large numbers despite the extreme heat. Notably, Himachal Pradesh has four Lok Sabha seats: Hamirpur, Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra. The BJP had won all four seats in 2019. The elections to the four Lok Sabha seats of Himachal Pradesh and by-polls to the six assembly constituencies that fell vacant with the disqualification of six rebel Congress MLAs will be held on June 1. China Insists on Talks with Dalai Lama's Representatives, Excluding Autonomy Discussions

China Insists on Talks with Dalai Lama's Representatives, Excluding Autonomy Discussions China on Friday said it will talk only with the representatives of the Dalai Lama and not the officials of the Tibetan government in exile based in India but ruled out dialogue on the highest Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leaders long-pending demand for autonomy for his remote Himalayan homeland. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin was reacting to reports of the back-channel talks between the Tibetan government-in-exile and the Chinese government when he said China regards the Tibetan government-in-exile based in Dharamshala as a separatist bloc. The so-called Xizangs government-in-exile is a completely separatist political bloc. It is totally against the Chinese Constitution and laws. It is illegal, Wang told a media briefing here. No country has recognised it. On Thursday, Sikyong or the political head of Tibet's government-in-exile, Penpa Tsering, told a visiting group of journalists in Dharamshala, India, We have had back-channel (engagement) since last year. But we have no immediate expectations from it. It has to be a long-term (one). Insisting that the talks are very informal, the head of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) said, I have my interlocutor who deals with people in Beijing. Then there are other elements also trying to reach out to us. According to Wang, the Chinese government has two basic principles for contacts with this (Dalai Lamas) group. First, we will only have talks with the representatives of the 14th Dalai Lama instead of the so-called representatives of the so-called government-in-exile or the so-called administrative centre, Wang said. Secondly, the topics for talks will be only for the arrangements and not for the so-called autonomy of Tibet, the main demand of the 88-year-old Dalai Lama. They should have some self-introspection and refrain from all activities sabotaging the stability of Xizang and go back to the right way so that we can move towards the next step, Wang said without elaborating. From 2002 to 2010, the Dalai Lama's representatives and the Chinese government held nine rounds of dialogue that did not produce any concrete outcome. The Tibetan side pitched for genuine autonomy for the Tibetan people in line with the Dalai Lama's Middle-Way Policy. No formal talks have been held since after 2010. In Dharamshala, another senior Tibetan leader indicated that the back-channel talks are aimed at reviving the overall dialogue process as it is the only way out to resolve the Tibetan issue. The 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 and came to India where he set up the government-in-exile at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.

Upgrade needed to bring back trust in Election Commission

The Election Commission (EC) is technologically challenged. And no, this is not about the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) that have been in the eye of the storm that blew itself all the way up to the Supreme Court. The system of level playing field and free and fair elections, intrinsic to how governments are elected in a democracy, requires an EC with updated rules and procedures, and capabilities to handle fast-paced changes in technology, especially communication networks. The 73-year-old rules impose a 48-hour silence in public campaigning. There are injunctions on the news media about opinion and exit polls. There is, however, a gaping hole when it comes to telecasts and webcasts. Television and internet are unregulated and free to deliver campaign content to voters homes, mobiles, laptops, tablets and desktops, even as voting is in progress in the extraordinarily extended multi-phase polling schedule. On April 19, when voting was in progress in all 39 constituencies of Tamil Nadu, all five constituencies in Uttarakhand and in 58 of the total 102 constituencies where polls were held, TV and internet were actively engaged in beaming live speeches by political leaders, including PM Narenda Modi. In the states where voting was in progress, political leaders, including supremos of regional parties, were canvassing votes, which was available on local TV channels and, of course, the internet. A 48-hour period of pre-poll silence has, therefore, become notional. The EC, on the contrary, has no notion of what it should do to prevent voters from being influenced even as they queue up to vote. Since it imposed restrictions on opinion and exit polls, it should not have been difficult for it to work out how to prevent noisy campaigning from being beamed into voters lives. The failure to prevent violation of its rules ought to be a priority for the EC, which every so often iterates its commitment to making sure there is a level playing field. The violation of the silence rule works to the disadvantage of smaller and regional parties in a Lok Sabha election, because national TV networks tend to focus on the ruling regime and offer up disproportionate slices of time to other national parties and leaders. Regional parties do not have the same advantage. Given that the BJP has included the One Nation, One Election promise in its election manifesto and maintains that it has engaged in a consultative process by forming a committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind, the in-built discrimination in favour of the biggest and loudest increases disproportionately. If the election system is artificially reconstructed, regional and national parties would be locked in campaigning for both state and national elections at the same time. In other words, parties like the AAP, TMC, the DMK, the CPI(M), RJD or even the BJD, the YSR Congress or the JD(S) would have to compete against parties like the BJP for time on national TV. Each regional and smaller party would get squeezed out or be relegated to competing against national parties even on local TV networks. Instead of being political equals, the smaller and regional parties would be reduced to second class citizen status. Since there is already a hierarchy in the categorisation of political parties by the EC, any additional disadvantage would skew the principle of fairness in favour of the ruling establishment at the Centre. An incensed Mamata Banerjee, TMCs boss and West Bengals CM, recently lashed out at the EC, branding it the BJP Commission. An independent EC capable of dealing with change, both structural and infrastructuralsuch as technologyis expected of an institution that has almost limitless resources and ample money to do its job without being attacked as biased by its stakeholders. She clearly believed the institution had been influenced to the extent that it had lost its independence. Mamatas attack was directed against the mobilisation of central security forces and the effective ouster of state police by the EC on the one hand and the removals and appointments of senior police and administrative personnel on the other. This sent out a signal that the institution did not trust the professionalism of public officials in West Bengal. This clash of opinions during elections in the state is not new. It was very evident during the assembly elections of 2021, when the DGP was removed. This time, too, a slew of officials have been removed, including the current DGP. The ECs lack of trust, or rather outright suspicion, that public servants working in states are biased is evident from the removal of six home secretaries from as many states, including UP, Bihar, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The lack of trust in the independence of the EC is equally problematic. While it has become routine for the EC to remove senior government servants before and during elections, there is very little political parties or voters can do to remove people heading the institution. The deep distrust on all sides has grown with every election. From EVMs, to voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) verification by voters of votes cast, counting of VVPAT slips, to how the EC handles the deployment of security forces, state police and government officials, there is no part of the system that is not controversial. For elections to be seen to be free and fair, there is a lot that the EC needs to do to end speculation and distrust about its functioning. Figuring out how to prevent violation of the pre-poll silence period is probably the easiest challenge it currently faces to its credibility. As per the sources, the Centre has provided the security cover to Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, Karamjjit Kaur Chaudhary and Tajinder Singh Bittu only in Punjab. Congress MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary from Phillaur was suspended from all party positions and responsibilities due to his repeated anti-party statements, despite prior warnings. Congress did not release MPLAD funds for public welfare, development in Shimla: HP BJP

Congress did not release MPLAD funds for public welfare, development in Shimla: HP BJP Former Himachal Pradesh Urban Development Minister and BJP leader Suresh Bhardwaj slammed the Congress party in the state on Thursday, claiming that MPLAD money was not released for public development and welfare in the Shimla constituency while the Congress was in power. While addressing the media in Shimla, the BJP leader said, The late Krishan Dutt Sultanpuri from the Congress party represented Shimla parliamentary constituency six times but did not spend MPLAD funds for development in the area. Notably, the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) is a government-funded program that gives each Member of Parliament (MP) an annual entitlement of Rs 5 crore. The funds are released in two instalments of Rs 2.5 crore each, and are non-lapsable, meaning they can be carried forward to the next year if not released in a given year. The MPLADS's goal is to enable MPs to recommend development projects in their constituencies that address local needs and create lasting community assets. Bhardwaj further said that it was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who introduced the MPLADs to the people in the district and that the current sitting BJP MP for the Shimla constituency, Suresh Kumar Kashyap has equally distributed funds to the people for development. Adding further he said that the Congress party has fielded the late KD Sultanpuri's son, Vinod Sultanpuri as a candidate from the Shimla Parliamentary segment. Every MP gets a local area development fund. After 1990, the MP fund was started with one crore per annum and now it is 5 crore rupees. KD Sultanpuri represented Shimla parliamentary constituency six times and now his son is the Congress candidate. During the MPship of Sultanpuri, no such funds were distributed, said Suresh Bhardwaj. Whereas BJP MP, Suresh Kashyap has distributed MP funds equally in the constituency he distributed and spent 19,30,45,875 rupees under MP fund. 72,66,500 rupees for Shimla district, 54,47,875 rupees for Solan and 65,93,084 rupees for the Sirmaur district were spent equally as per population ratio, he said. The BJP leader also said that Suresh Kashyap has played an important role in bringing Shimla under the Smart City project as an MP. Rs 309 crore was spent for IIM Nahan, Green Corridor NH707 has been built and a Medical devise park is being built at Nalagarah in Himachal Pradesh under the special efforts of Suresh Kashyap as a BJP MP, Bhardwaj said further.
