Kangana vs Vikramaditya: The Ultimate Battle for Mandi's Throne

Kangana vs Vikramaditya: The Ultimate Battle for Mandi's Throne Clash of the two richest titans, a celebrity and a 'royal', is on the cards in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi Lok Sabha constituency, known for electing erstwhile ''royals'' maximum number of times. The BJP has for the first time fielded a woman and a Bollywood celebrity in Kangana Ranaut who will take on Vikramaditya Singh, scion of the erstwhile Rampur ''royal family'' and son of six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh. Both the rivals have launched a high-pitched campaign, even with offensive outbursts. Vikramaditya fired a salvo at Kangana asking about her vision about the development of the constituency. Taking a dig at his rival, he said she is on a month-long political tourism and would pack up and return to Bollywood after June 4. Returning the salvo, Kangana dubbed Vikramaditya as ''Chhota Pappu''. It was a mocking reference to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is often dubbed as ''Pappu'' or a novice by his political opponents. Kangana called Vikramaditya a ''junior Pappu''. She asked him why he stood mum when Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took ''anti-Mandi decisions'' like stalling the Rs 250-crore Shiv Dhan project, curtailing the jurisdiction of Mandi University and pushing the Sundernagar airfield project under the carpet. Kangana's main agendas include restarting all the stalled projects besides improving connectivity to remote tribal areas, and popularising local cuisines and traditional attires, and promoting women-centric rural tourism in Seraj and Karsog. ''Mandi will be made a smart city,'' this is my promise, said Vikramaditya, adding that Jalori Jot tunnel will be constructed on the line of Rohtang tunnel and remote Pangi area of Chamba will be connected with Tissa, besides the construction of Beas river front. The alleged insulting remarks by Kangana on farmers during the farmer agitation are recoiling and the Samyukt Kisan Manch has rendered their support to Vikramaditya. On the other hand, Kangana got support from unexpected quarters. The scion of Kullu Maheshwar Singh, who was an aspirant of a BJP ticket from Mandi; former Union minister Sukh Ram's grandson Ashray Sharma, who was defeated by BJP candidate Ram Swaroop Sharma in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls; and Kargil hero Brig Khushal Singh, who was defeated by Pratibha Singh in the 2021 parliamentary byelection with a narrow margin have extended their support to the Bollywood actor. Kangana dubbed Vikramaditya also as a ''bigda hua shezada'' (spolit prince) and a 'paltu' (one who makes U-turns) and said he used to criticise his own government but now is praising it. Singh retaliated by saying she will return ''purified'' from the 'Dev bhoomi'. Both Bollywood reel 'Queen' Kangana and 'Raja' Vikramaditya Singh have declared their assets over of Rs 90 crore. Kangana is banking on her celebrity image, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ram temple factors. Vikramaditya is hoping to sail through riding on the legacy of his father Virbhadra Singh and state Congress chief Pratibha Singh, the sitting MP from Mandi. Vikramaditya, who was active during the monsoon disaster in 2023, has been asking where Kangana was when it had hit the state and caused havoc in the Mandi-Kullu region. The BJP candidate is accused of being unfamiliar with her constituency while the Congress candidate has extensively campaigned for his mother in the last byelections. Out of 19 parliamentary elections, including two byelections held in Mandi since 1952, the Congress has won 13 times, with both Virbhadra Singh and Pratibha Singh winning thrice. Further, the scions of erstwhile princely states won from Mandi 13 times while the ''non-royals'' were elected six times. Raj Kumai Amrit Kaur of the Kapurthala dynasty and Raja Joginder Sen Bahadur of the princely state of Mandi were elected once, Raja Lalit Sen of Suket represented Mandi twice, Virbhadra Singh and Pratibha Singh three times each and Raja Maheshwar Singh of Kullu won thrice. Sukh Ram who won from Mandi three times, Ram Swaroop who won two times and Ganga Singh who won once, when he defeated Virbhadra Singh in 1977, were the exceptions who hailed from non-royal families. The sprawling constituency spreads over six districts and comprises 17 assembly segments. In the 2022 assembly polls, the BJP had won 12 assembly seats falling under Mandi parliamentary constituency. The seat has become prestigious for former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, who has to establish that the BJP still holds sway in Mandi. Vikramaditya Singh has to prove that the impact of the Rampur 'ruling' family is deep-rooted in this constituency. There are 13,77,173 voters in the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency, including 6,98,666 males, 6,78,504 females and three third gender.

PM Modi not Italian like Sonia Gandhi who doesn't know Hindi: Kangana

Shimla: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not an Italian like Congress leader Sonia Gandhi who does not know Hindi, he is a son of the soil who is working for the country's progress, said actor Kangana Ranaut, the BJP candidate from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh, on Friday.Addressing a rally at Jagat Khana in Kullu district, Ranaut said Modi is a symbol of good governance and the prime minister knows several languages, including Pahari. Prime Minister Modi is not an Italian like Sonia Gandhi who does not know Hindi. He is a son of the soil, was born in a poor family and is working for the welfare and development of the country, she said. On one hand, there is Modi's good governance and on the other hand, the corruption of the Congress and the people of Himachal Pradesh have made up their mind to ensure the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) victory in the June 1 polls, she added. Attacking Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu for his remarks that Jai Ram Thakur, the leader of opposition in the state Assembly, is making a flop film, Ranaut said Thakur had a super hit tenure of five years as chief minister but Sukhu has failed in his job in 15 months. Sukhu had earlier said Kangana is a good actress but her film would flop as her scriptwriters are Thakur and state BJP chief Rajiv Bindal. Taking a dig at the Congress candidate from Mandi, Vikramaditya Singh, the son of six-time former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh and state party chief Pratibha Singh, Ranaut said his family has been sticking to power for long. Tikkaji (Singh) is the face of the dynastic politics of the Congress, whereas the BJP is a party of commoners where a tea seller (Modi) becomes the prime minister and the son of a mason (Thakur) becomes a chief minister, she added. Meanwhile, addressing a public meeting in Kullu, Singh said, Where are the two crore jobs promised by the BJP and why is the BJP not talking about inflation? The saffron party should talk about development issues rather than misleading the public on Hindu-Muslim and India-Pakistan, he added. The Congress leader also listed his priorities for Kullu district, including promotion of tourism, opening medical colleges and the construction of the Jalori Jot tunnel.

It's 'King' versus 'Queen' in HP's Mandi as Cong fields royal heavyweight against actor Kangana

It's 'King' versus 'Queen' in HP's Mandi as Cong fields royal heavyweight against actor Kangana The stage is set for a battle royale in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi Lok Sabha seat as the Congress has pitted state minister Vikramaditya Singh, the titular king of the erstwhile princely state of Bushahr, against BJP candidate and actor Kangana Ranaut. Himachal Pradesh PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh is the son of six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh and Pratibha Singh, the sitting MP from Mandi and the Congress' state unit president. Historically, the Mandi constituency has favoured scions of erstwhile princely states, electing royals in 13 out of 19 elections, including two bypolls since 1952. Vikramaditya Singh, the two-time MLA from the Shimla (rural) assembly segment, is not new in the parliamentary constituency as his father and mother each won the seat thrice. In the 2021 Lok Sabha bypoll to the seat, Singh had campaigned extensively for his mother. Even before his candidature was announced, Vikramaditya Singh was involved in a spat with the actor-politician of Bollywood film 'Queen' fame with neither pulling any punches. While Singh had termed Ranaut ''queen of controversies'', the BJP's Mandi candidate indirectly termed the state minister as ''Chota Pappu''. Last Thursday, Ranaut launched a blistering attack on Vikramaditya Singh, and said, ''Yeh tumhare baap-dada ki riyasat nahin hai, ke tum mujhe dara, dhamka ke vapis bhej doge (This is not the estate of your father or grandfather that you will threaten me and send me back). The BJP candidate's retaliation came in response to Vikramaditya Singh's jibe a few days earlier about her reported comments over beef-eating. ''I pray to Lord Ram to give her wisdom and hope she goes back pure from 'Dev Bhoomi' Himachal to Bollywood because she will not win the elections as she knows nothing about the people of Himachal,'' Singh had said. Indirectly dubbing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Vikramaditya Singh as ''Pappu'', Kangana had said there is one ''Bada Pappu'' in Delhi and the ''Chhota Pappu'' in Himachal says she eats beef. She asked why he was not showing evidence of her consuming beef. Terming Vikramaditya Singh as '''ek number ka jhootha' (liar No. 1)'' and ''paltubaaz'' (one who repeatedly changes stance), she wondered what can be expected from him when ''Bada Pappu'' talks about destroying ''Nari Shakti'' (women power). ''I have made my name in the film industry without the help of my father and mother... I want to join politics and serve the people,'' she said and asserted that politics is an expression of service and anyone from a king to a beggar is entitled to that expression. The factors working in favour of Ranaut are former Himachal Pradesh chief minister and senior BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur's hold over Mandi and that the party has won all the nine assembly segments under the parliament constituency. BJP leader Khushal Thakur, a Kargil war hero who lost to Pratibha Singh by a margin of 7,490 votes in Lok Sabha bypolls held in November 2021, has rendered his support to Ranaut. ''There are over one lakh ex-servicemen in this Parliament constituency'', he had told the PTI earlier. Moreover, BJP leader and the titular king of Kullu Maheshwar Singh, who earlier opposed Ranaut's candidature, has extended his support to her. Of the 17 assembly segments under the Mandi Lok Sabha seat, eight are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled castes. Since 1952, the parliamentary seat has been represented by Raj Kumai Amrit Kaur of Kapurthala dynasty and Raja Joginder Sen Bahadur of the princely state of Mandi once each, Raja Lalit Sen of Suket twice, Virbhadra Singh and his wife Pratibha Singh thrice each and Maheshwar Singh thrice. Three-time MP from Mandi and former Union minister Sukh Ram, two-time winner Ram Swaroop and Ganga Singh were the exceptions and did not hail from royal families.

Hockey Jharkhand secured their spot in the knockout rounds of the tournament by finishing on top of Pool C. This pool also featured Uttar Pradesh Hockey, which boasts Indian stars like Vandana Katariya and Mumtaz Khan, representing their respective home teams in this unique domestic event that has drawn full attendance from Indian team players. Salima Tete, a mercurial attacking midfielder in the Indian side, expressed confidence in the team's upcoming quarter-final encounter against Hockey Mizoram on Wednesday. She also hailed the state's grassroots programme that has empowered the aspiring players with the right training and facilities. There has been a lot of change over the past few years. Earlier, the players used to play on the grass but now they play on astroturf. We are also getting a lot of support from the Jharkhand Government as well. There are a lot of players coming out of these programs. It is amazing to see their potential and the skills they possess. We are also getting constant support and motivation from Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General Bhola Nath. The talent identification program and grassroots development initiatives have helped in bringing up new talent, Tete said as quoted by Hockey India. Salima also expressed her thoughts on how the young players have this golden opportunity to learn from the experienced players in their team. All these young players have this chance to spend time with the experienced players, interact with them, and learn where all they can improve their game. We are always there to help them, and support them. We have seen their game and all these players have the talent to don the Indian jersey in coming years, she added. Meanwhile, Sangita Kumari, who plays as a forward, also echoed the same thoughts on the grassroots development program in Jharkhand. I have seen a lot of change over the past few years in how these programs are beneficial to identify new talent. The kind of training these young players get will help them hone their skills. I feel that these programs are heading in the right direction and I hope that several players from the state get a chance to play for the Senior National Team in coming years, she said.
