JAIPUR: Film producer Amit Jani, who has backed Udaipur Files based on the brutal murder of Kanhaiyalal, has once again received threatening comments on social media. Police have detained a youth in connection with the matter and launched an investigation. According to officials, Jani was recently admitted to a private hospital after complaining of chest pain during his visit to Ahmedabad and Udaipur for the films release. On being discharged on Wednesday, he alleged that Bangladeshi elements were trying to mislead locals and instigate violence against him. Like Kanhaiyalal, I am also being provoked to be murdered, he claimed. A threatening comment was allegedly posted by a man identified as Mohammad Shahid. Acting on Janis complaint, police detained Shahid for questioning. Jani further alleged that he received a chilling message reading, We are 700 meters away and will send tiffin, which he interpreted as a bomb threat. In another instance, a Bangladeshi youth named Hamad reportedly commented, Tiffin is expensive, send a knife. Superintendent of Police Yogesh Goyal confirmed that Shahid has been taken into custody and interrogated. We are probing whether these are simply online threats or connected to a larger network. Given the allegations of Pakistani and Bangladeshi links, the matter is being taken very seriously, he said. Police sources added that the threats have created an atmosphere of tension in Udaipur. Udaipur Files , directed by Bharat S Srinet and Jayant Sinha and produced by Amit Jani, features Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiyalal, with Rajneesh Duggal and Preeti Jhangiani in key roles. The film revisits the horrific incident of June 28, 2022, when tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli was beheaded in Udaipur by two men after he shared a social media post supporting BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The accused had filmed the act and circulated the video online, triggering nationwide outrage. The films release reignited political debate. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had accused the Centre of delaying justice to Kanhaiyalals family.

Mirrors that reflect and resonate indoors
Todays mirrors dont just flatter or tattle on wicked queens. They tell stories, bend space, and, with a flicker of light, pull a Beauty and the Beast trick turning a cramped corridor into a ballroom. From the shiny volcanic glass in ancient Anatolia 8,000 years ago, to the silver-backed showpieces of Egypt and Mesopotamia, mirrors have dazzled for a millennium. They have been symbols of life, glimpses of the soul, tools for fortune-telling, and magnets for superstition. Artists from Drer to Magritte and Manet have used them to play with perception, slipping us secret views of the world beyond the frames. Reflections that resonate In homes today, mirrors have stepped out of bathrooms and into living rooms, lobbies, and even Instagram grids, claiming the spotlight. Architect Iraianbu Murugavel calls them lively design features that blend practicality, beauty, culture, and creativity. For him, their magic comes from both material and placement. Traditional silver or aluminium-backed glass still rules, but acrylics, tinted and etched finishes, and even hand-polished metals are rewriting the rules. A well-placed mirror, he says, can transform mood and scale. A full-length panel behind a dining table turns a modest space into a buzzing hub, mirrored ceilings lift the height of urban flats, and mirrored wardrobes make storage disappear into light. For M Murali, chief architect at Murali Architects, mirrors are active design tools used to shape perception, guide movement, and evoke emotion. His team has drawn daylight deep into narrow corridors, brought sunsets indoors with angled panels, and doubled the lushness of terrace gardens using tempered outdoor mirrors to create secret courtyards. Tradition and storytelling Indias mirror magic has deep roots. Murali points to the Sheesh Mahal in palaces of Rajasthan, where walls and ceilings are inlaid with fragments that sparkle like jewels under oil lamps. In modern homes, these reappear as mosaic feature walls or mirrored ceilings. Harini Vijayakumar, founding partner at Studio ZO, is drawn to ainakari, the Mughal-era mirror work of Jaipur and Udaipur, where bits of glass form dazzling geometric patterns. She also treasures the centuries-old Aranmula Kannadi from Kerala hand-polished metal mirrors made without reflective coating; valued as much for their craftsmanship as their reflection. While the north embraced mirror mosaics for grandeur, the south used them sparingly to channel light, mark auspiciousness, and enrich rituals, says Murali. Architect Subhiksha Thiagarajan recalls the slanting mirrors fixed on ledges in old Tamil homes ingenious little panels that bounced courtyard daylight into the darker rooms beyond. The placement of these mirrors was also part of a practice rooted in Vasthu Sastra and the belief that it brings prosperity while warding off evil and negative energy. When too much is too much Mirrors can lift a rooms spirit, but if you overdo it, you risk restlessness. Iraianbu advises against placing mirrors directly opposite each other, keeping large mirrored surfaces to a single wall, and pairing them with matte textures to avoid visual overload. Murali compares them to spice. He says, Too much can be overwhelming. Overuse creates restlessness, clutter, or mild disorientation. Hes seen intimate spaces turn into mirror mazes, where constant movement becomes distracting. Harini also confesses to having felt unsettled once at the Kochi Biennale, where mirrored panels formed an uncanny maze. Subhiksha, however, sees it differently. I dont think theres ever a line. It depends on personal preferences. Antique pieces bring nostalgia, while clear glass enlivens. Frames and finishes shift a rooms mood sleek panels for modern minimalism, ornate carvings for tradition. Harini calls mirrors perky, bold choices that work across styles minimalist, boho, bling, modernist making spaces look infinite or almost kaleidoscopic. For Subhiksha, mirrors swing from extravagant to understated, carrying emotional weight. Mirrors can be styled in an extravagant and in an understated way. Either ways, I love the drama and the depth they create in spaces. Creative explorations In Tharun Vikass Mogappair home, Muralis mirrored ceiling crowns a double-height dining space, flooding it with light and stretching it skyward. Meals there feel expansive, interactive, and just a little theatrical. Subhiksha recalls framing mirrors for a functional training centre with hand-cut rosewood shaped into waves. Harini once revived a dark hallway with a Mondrian-patterned mirror wall that lit up the passage by day, without a single bulb. Murali looks outdoors for inspiration, too, pointing to Scotlands Garden of Cosmic Speculation, where mirrors merge landscape with sky. Mirrors are also constantly evolving with technology. Iraianbu predicts smart surfaces with built-in displays, adjustable tinting, and anti-microbial coatings. Harini imagines AI-driven mirrors that talk back. Subhiksha notes the growing ease with once-fragile free-standing designs. Murali envisions flexible, curved, eco-friendly panels with augmented reality overlays, all hinting at how mirrors will soon change not just how we see ourselves, but how we inhabit space.

NEW DELHI: Jaipur traders staged a strong protest against United States President Donald Trumps decision to impose steep additional tariffs on Indian goods in Rajapark's main square. Vendors from the citys main market carried placards condemning the US and Trump, announcing a complete boycott of American products. In a symbolic act, they allegedly burned an effigy of Trump along with US-made goods, even setting fire to US dollar notes. The Trump administrations revised tariff policy has delivered a heavy blow to Rajasthans exporters. The move imposes an immediate 25% duty, with an additional 25% levy on the way, a combined 50% hit on key export sectors like gems and jewellery, handicrafts, and textiles, where Rajasthan holds a dominant share. Ravi Nayyar, President of Rajapark Vyaapar Mandal, said, Jaipurs business organisations have asked all citizens to boycott US products, and we want to give a strong message that because of the arrogance of US President Donald Trump, irrational tariffs have been imposed on us. With 17,000 crore of the states annual exports dependent on the US market, exporters warn this reliance is turning into a liability. Finding new markets will take time, and the immediate risk is to the livelihoods of nearly seven lakh artisans and workers employed in US-focused export units. Industry bodies have urged the government to roll out urgent support measures. Navinit Jhalani, coordinator of the Rajasthan Handicrafts Exporters Joint Forum, said uncertainty has gripped both US buyers and local exporters. We have only 21 days, until 28 August, to ship goods to the US without the additional 25% penalty, he explained. With Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day holidays, meeting this deadline is near impossible. Orders ready after this date are being put on hold by American buyers. US tariffs on Indian oil imports from Russia a 'big blow' to Moscow: Trump Jaipur, Indias gems and jewellery powerhouse, is staring at deep losses. Import duties had already risen from 5.5% to 15.5% earlier this year; the new hike will push many exporters to the brink. Sanjay Kala, former president of the Jewellers Association, said the US accounts for Rs 11,000Rs 12,000 crore of Rajasthans Rs 17,500 crore gems and jewellery exports, most from Jaipur. Around 1.5 lakh people work in this sector in Jaipur, and up to 95% may feel the impact, he warned. Kala noted that while India now faces a 50% tariff, competitors like Turkey, Vietnam, Thailand, and the UAE enjoy lower rates of 1020 per cent, making Indian products uncompetitive. Some manufacturers are already considering shifting production abroad, he said. Jodhpur, a leading exporter of wooden furniture and metal handicrafts, sends Rs 2,500 crore worth of goods to the US annually, more than half its total exports. The tariff hike threatens the livelihood of nearly one lakh artisans and workers. With competitors like Turkey and Mexico facing just 10% tariffs, our products could be priced out of the market, said Dr Bharat Dinesh, president of the Jodhpur Handicraft Exporters Association. The Centre must act fast to safeguard MSMEs and open talks with the US. Trumps 50 per cent tariff threat puts Indias gem and jewellery exports at risk: GJEPC chief Kirit Bhansali Bikaners famed wool industry, with 250 units producing 11.5 lakh kg of yarn daily, faces a severe blow. This yarn is used in carpets exported worldwide, especially to the US via Bhadohi. The 50% tariff threatens to snap this supply chain, impacting about one lakh people directly or indirectly linked to the sector. Udaipurs quartz industry, which supplies 4045% of Rajasthans exports to the US in this category, will suffer as buyers turn to cheaper suppliers in Vietnam, Turkey, and Brazil. The citys marble exporters, already hit by a slowdown, now face uncertainty over shipments worth Rs 100 crore annually. Kota stone and sandstone exports worth Rs 200 crore annually could lose buyers to other markets as US costs rise. The Hadoti regions coriander, dairy products, chemicals, and de-oiled cake exports are also at risk, potentially affecting Rs 250 crore in trade. Rajiv Arora, president of the Federation of Rajasthan Exporters, urged the Centre to expand production-linked incentive schemes and provide targeted relief for affected sectors. If we dont act fast, the economic and social fallout could be severe, he said.

'Udaipur Files' released in 4,500 theatres, Kanhaiyalals sons attend emotional first screening
JAIPUR: The film 'Udaipur Files', based on the tragic murder of Kanhaiyalal Sahu in Udaipur that made national headlines in June 2022, was released across 4,500 theatres nationwide on Friday. The censor board cleared the film, which stars Vijay Raaz, after making 55 cuts. Kanhaiyalals sons, Yash and Tarun Sahu, attended the first screening at Udaipurs Urban Square Mall. They were visibly emotional and broke down during the throat-slitting scene that recreated their fathers brutal killing. Their mother did not attend the screening, choosing not to relive the trauma. During the show, Yash and Tarun carried a photograph of their father and left an empty seat in his memory. The films release was marked by tight security in the city, with extra police forces deployed in sensitive areas and special teams stationed at 21 check posts. Speaking to the media, Yash Teli said, After a long and difficult struggle, the film has finally reached audiences. It was challenged at multiple levels from the High Court to the Supreme Court and the Central Government. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting cleared it after confirming it did not target any community. Yash added that his family has been fighting for justice for the past three years without success. Through this film, we want to show our pain to the country. It tells the truth about the injustice done to my father. I hope people watch it and support us in our fight for justice, he said. Explaining why his mother stayed away from the premiere, Yash said, We decided not to bring her this time. She has already suffered a lot. In the past, watching such portrayals caused her immense distress. He also criticized what he called terrorist-minded people and organizations that, in his view, provide legal aid to terrorists and demanded that such groups be banned. The film is directed by Bharat S. Srinet and Jayant Sinha, produced by Amit Jani, and features Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiyalal. Rajneesh Duggal and Preeti Jhangiani play key roles. Udaipur murder case sparks fresh political criticism over justice delay On June 28, 2022, Kanhaiyalal Teli, a tailor by profession, was beheaded by two Muslim men in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The attackers filmed the act and circulated the video online. Kanhaiyalal had shared a social media post supporting BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, whose remarks had sparked the Muhammad remarks controversy. The release of 'Udaipur Files' has reignited political debate. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot once again accused the central government of failing to provide justice to the victims family. Last month, Gehlot criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Jaipur, questioning the delay in justice. Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within four hours. Both had links with the BJP. Yet the NIA, under your ministry, took over the case overnight and we did not object, Gehlot wrote on social media. He pointed out that in three years, the NIA court has not delivered a verdict because it does not have a regular judge. It is a failure of the Centre and the NIA that only 6 out of 166 witnesses have testified. No special or fast-track court has been formed. The case is currently being handled as an additional charge by the CBI court, he said.
Abu Asim Azmi's statement on the Udaipur murder case has created controversy. He called the beheading a reaction to comments against Prophet Mohammad. Azmi linked the incident to Nupur Sharma's remarks. He was reacting to the upcoming film 'Udaipur Files'. The film is based on Kanhaiya Lal's murder. Lal was killed for supporting Sharma. Azmi believes the film spreads hatred.

JAIPUR: In a chilling case of post-tragedy exploitation, fraudsters posing as government and legal representatives allegedly attempted to deceive and intimidate the family of a deceased victim of the recent Ahmedabad plane crash. The family, residing in Rundeda village of Vallabhnagar tehsil, was approached with a false promise of 8 to 10 crore in compensation in exchange for confidential documents and signatures. According to the police complaint filed by Deepak Menaria, son of the deceased Vardichand Menaria, the fraudsters first made contact via a mobile call on the night of 17 July. The caller, identifying himself as Bhupendra, claimed to be part of a central government verification team and requested personal documents including a copy of the deceaseds passport and flight ticket. He assured Deepak that filing a legal case against Boeing could result in a massive compensation payout. The very next evening, on 18 July, a man and a woman arrived at the complainants house in a white Ertiga car (registration number GJ 06 DX 8772). Without prior notice or formal introduction, they entered the house and began speaking directly to the victim's mother in a confusing and persuasive tone. Alarmed, she called Deepak, who rushed home to find the duo claiming to be from the Supreme Court in Delhi. They allegedly insisted that the family sign and provide thumb impressions on some documents, which they claimed were needed to initiate a lawsuit against Boeing in the United States. However, when Deepak stated that he intended to file the case independently including Boeing, Air India, the Government of India, and the Airport Authority the duo allegedly became aggressive, trying to coerce him into signing. After the two left the house, the situation worsened when Deepak received a WhatsApp message stating they would return the next day by 2 p.m. When he asked for the reason and declined to answer calls, he was bombarded with voice recordings until 11 p.m., allegedly pressuring him to comply. In one of the audios, the man claimed to be a senior Delhi-based advocate working on behalf of the Central Government to verify Boeing's released funds. He threatened that they would return and sent suspicious documents via WhatsApp. Disturbed by the continued pressure and fearing for the safety of his family, Deepak approached the Udaipur district administration on 19 July. The family sought protection and action against the impersonators. Following this, the Vallabhnagar police registered an FIR against unknown individuals under relevant sections related to fraud, impersonation, and intimidation. The case has now been taken up by local law enforcement. Investigators are examining phone numbers, messages, and audio clips shared by the complainant. The police are also tracing the vehicles registration to identify the fraudsters. Authorities have urged other bereaved families to remain cautious and report any suspicious communication, especially in the wake of sensitive incidents like the Ahmedabad plane crash.

Schools shut as heavy rains lash Rajasthan, 30 districts on alert
JAIPUR: Rajasthan continues to reel under intense monsoon activity as heavy rains batter multiple regions, prompting widespread disruption and precautionary measures. Jaipur saw heavy showers since morning, causing waterlogging in several parts of the city. Notably, areas around government residences, including those of Chief Secretary Sudhansh Pant and DGP Rajeev Sharma, were flooded. The Hadoti region was badly hit, with connectivity also severely disrupted. In Kota and surrounding Hadoti region, the spell of rain persisted on Tuesday as well, filling up dams, anicuts, and ponds. Waterfalls have begun flowing from the surrounding hills, and low-lying areas are flooded. Many rural roads are submerged, causing significant traffic disruptions, and standing crops are beginning to rot in waterlogged fields. Kota city recorded 15 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, with intermittent rain continuing through the day after a wet night. In Tonk and Sawai Madhopur, several areas are submerged. Rajasthans connectivity with Madhya Pradesh has been severely affected: Parvati river overflowed in Etawah (Kota), flooding a new bridge on the Etawah-Khatoli road. As a result, State Highway-70 (KotaGwaliorSheopur) is closed to traffic. Augaad culvert on NH-552 in Bodal, about 12 km from Sawai Madhopur, was washed away, severing the Sawai MadhopurSheopur (MP) route. In Sawai Madhopur, houses are filled with water up to five feet, and railway tracks are submerged, affecting train services. Morel Dam overflows again The Morel Dam in Lalsot (Dausa), considered Asias largest kachha (earthen) dam, has overflowed with water reaching 1.5 feet above its crest. This is the second consecutive year the dam has reached capacity. The situation is being closely monitored by local authorities. Delhi HC to examine if Centre has power to order cuts in 'Udaipur Files' movie
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought to know from the Centre whether it had the authority to pass the order directing six cuts in the film 'Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder' while exercising its revisional powers. You have to exercise the powers within the four corners of the statute. You can't go beyond that, a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said. The court posed the question on being informed that the Centre, while exercising its revisional powers under the Cinematograph Act, had suggested six cuts to the producers of the movie in addition to a disclaimer. It was also informed that though the film has been recertified, it has not been issued to the producers because the matter is pending in the high court. The petitioner's counsel contended before the court that the central government had exercised its revisional powers in a manner that contravenes the statutory scheme of the Cinematograph Act. The nature of order you passed, you said, effect six cuts, etc, whether this authority is available under the statute? In the earlier round, this court has noticed the change of the provision of Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, as it existed then and now, the bench asked Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, who was representing the Centre and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The court was hearing a plea by Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the tailor Kanhaiya Lal murder case, objecting to the release of the film on the ground that it would prejudice his case during the trial. The (July 10) order was to decide the revision petition under Section 6. There was no order to the producer or to the board (to make cuts). See the earlier order, the court notices the changes in law. Earlier and existing provisions and the changes were noticed. It was noticed clearly what kind of orders can be passed under Section 6... It was a statutory remedy to which the petitioners were relegated. You have to exercise the powers within the four corners of the statute. You can't go beyond that, the bench said. Section 6 of the Act grants the central government revisional powers over film certification. Sharma submitted that the film has undergone a two-step filter, first by the censor board, which suggested 55 cuts, and second by the committee, which further asked for six cuts, making a total of 61 cuts. There is a body of experts and so it happens in this case that it has undergone a two-stage filter test -- first by the board which suggested 55 cuts. All those cuts were those which had purported generic overtones, he said. Senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy, representing Javed, submitted that till now six witnesses have been examined in the case and 160 witnesses remain. I was 19 years old when I was arrested. I am Accused No.8 in the trial. I was released on bail by the Rajasthan High Court because there was no connection between me and the allegations. I am a citizen of this country and am entitled to a fair trial. My right to a fair trial is jeopardised by the release of the film. This is the first proposition. The promise of Article 21 of the Constitution, right to fair trial, is an essential component of what it means to be a citizen in this country, she argued. The senior counsel said the film producer has expressly said that the film is based on the case chargesheet and even the dialogues have been lifted directly from the chargesheet. She contended that the central government has exercised its revisional powers in a manner that contravenes the statutory scheme of the Cinematograph Act. Referring to the relevant law, Guruswamy said there are three kinds of revisional powers that can be exercised by the Centre -- the government can say that the film cannot be broadcast; they can change the certification or they can suspend it. What it cannot do is what it has done here, which is to suggest cuts, remove dialogues, add disclaimers, modify disclaimers like the sensor board. It cannot do, she contended. While Guruswamy concluded her arguments, the submissions of Sharma remained inconclusive and the court would continue the proceedings on August 1. Besides Javed's plea, another petition has been filed by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani. It could not be heard due to the non-availability of the counsel. Two petitions related to the movie came before the high court following a Supreme Court direction. The top court directed the petitioners to move the high court against the Centre's revisional order of giving nod for the film's release. The producers of the film had moved the top court after a high court bench previously stayed the film's release. The apex court on July 25 said the film-makers' appeal against the high court order staying the film's release was infructuous as they had accepted the July 21 Centre nod for the film's release, subject to six cuts in its scenes and modifications in the disclaimer. Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered in June 2022 allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The assailants later released a video claiming the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP member Nupur Sharma following her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. The case was probed by the NIA and the accused were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, besides provisions under the IPC. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
J&K students seek probe into alleged harassment that led to BDS students death in Udaipur
JAIPUR: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has sought the intervention of Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma in the alleged suicide of a student from Jammu, blaming college harassment and institutional neglect for her death. The tragic death of Shweta Singh, a final-year BDS student from Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, has triggered strong reactions from student groups demanding accountability. Shweta died by suicide on 24 July at the Pacific Dental College and Research Centre in Udaipur, allegedly after enduring prolonged harassment by faculty members. In a letter to the Rajasthan Chief Minister, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association demanded a time-bound judicial inquiry, citing what it described as a disturbing case of institutional failure and academic exploitation. According to the Associations national convenor Nasir Khuehami, Shweta had been mentally harassed for over two years by faculty members Naini Jain and Bhagwat Singh, whom she named in a handwritten suicide note. The note, shared widely by students, accuses the two of demanding bribes, failing non-paying students, and blocking her exams and degree for over a year. She was emotionally broken. Her note says it all, how she was punished for not paying bribes, made to work with juniors, and slowly driven to the edge, Khuehami said. The Association also alleged that following her death, college authorities failed to respond in time. Students had to carry her body down six floors without any medical or administrative assistance. The hostel room where the incident occurred remained unsecured for hours, raising concerns about evidence tampering. Despite student protests and the discovery of the suicide note, an FIR was filed only three days later, and reportedly left out the full names of the accused. The Association claims the delay was deliberate and meant to shield the faculty. Students speaking to the police or media were allegedly threatened by college officials. Theres been a systematic effort to silence students and weaken the case, the Association stated. No arrests have been made yet, even though abetment to suicide is a serious cognisable offence. The removal of the accused teachers, the Association says, is mere cosmetic damage control. Calling Shwetas case a grim reflection of the exploitation in private colleges, the Association said students from Jammu and Kashmir in Rajasthan now feel unsafe and fearful of speaking up. Among its demands: immediate arrests, a judicial inquiry led by a retired judge, protection for student witnesses, and a regulatory mechanism to monitor private colleges. This is not an isolated case, Khuehami said. Its about ensuring no student is ever pushed to such a tragic end again.
JAIPUR: In the wake of the tragic Jhalawar school wall collapse incident that claimed the lives of seven children, fresh incidents from Jaisalmer and Udaipur have once again highlighted the crumbling condition of government school buildings in the State. Two rooms of a government school in Kotada, Udaipur, collapsed around 8 pm on July 27. Fortunately, since the incident did not occur during school hours, another potential disaster was prevented. Upon receiving the information, residents, including Pipla Sarpanch, rushed to the spot to assess the damage. According to locals, several school buildings in the Kotada region are in a severely dilapidated condition and pose a serious threat to students and staff. Jhalawar School tragedy puts Rajasthan Education Minister in the dock: Will he Resign? In a separate incident, a portion of the plaster ceiling at the Amba Khadra Anganwadi Centre in Eklingpura village of Gram Panchayat Manvakheda collapsed late at night. No children were present at the time, averting a major mishap. However, the incident has left Anganwadi workers and local children shocked. Villagers claimed that they had repeatedly informed the Panchayat and concerned departments about the dangerous condition of the building, but no repairs had been initiated. These incidents point to serious negligence by the authorities and underline the deteriorating condition of public infrastructure in educational institutions. Meanwhile, the Rajasthan High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the Jhalawar tragedy. Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand described the incident as nerve-shocking, heart-breaking, and society-rocking, expressing deep concern over the condition and safety of government schools in the State. The court observed that even though 6% of the state budget is allocated to education, the condition of many schools remains deplorable. Shockingly, 32% of government schools lack electricity, 9% do not have access to drinking water, and many still do not have separate toilets for boys and girls leaving girl students especially vulnerable. The court highlighted the gravity of the situation by stating: Girls are afraid to go to school due to the lack of basic facilities. If they drink water, they fear needing a toilet that doesnt exist. The High Court has issued notices to the Union Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women and Child Development, as well as to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary, Education Department, Women and Child Development Department, and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, demanding detailed reports on the current status and for immediate measures being taken. The court has asked why the following directions should not be issued. Immediate survey and identification of all dilapidated or dangerous school buildings. Preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. Compensation and full support (including treatment and education) for affected families. Proportional development of schools according to the local population. Provision of separate, clean toilets for girls. Free sanitary napkins and installation of vending machines in schools. Regular power supply, fans, and proper lighting facilities in every school. Establishment of libraries and computer labs with internet access in all schools. Development of an online complaint redressal system. Fixing accountability and recovering costs in cases of poor construction. Initiation of departmental and criminal action against responsible officials. Formation of district-level committees for monthly inspections and monitoring. As incidents of school infrastructure failures continue to emerge, the state now faces urgent pressure from both the judiciary and the public to ensure the safety and dignity of its school-going children. During the event, major announcements related to the cooperative sector are expected, and appointment letters will be distributed among the youth. However, the visit has drawn sharp political reactions. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot criticised the Union Minister, demanding answers over the lack of progress in the Kanhaiyalal murder case. Today Union Home Minister Amit Shah is coming to Jaipur. Before the assembly elections, you mentioned the Kanhaiyalal case in every rally in Rajasthan and asked for votes in his name, Gehlot posted on X. He accused the BJP of misleading the public on compensation to the victims family. Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within four hours. Both were associated with the BJP. Despite this, the NIA, under your ministry, took over the case overnight. We didnt object. But the BJP continued to spread lies about compensation, which was one of the major reasons behind our governments fall, he wrote. Gehlot expressed dismay over the slow pace of justice. Three years have passed, but the NIA court has not delivered any sentence. There isnt even a regular judge in the NIA court here, and witness statements havent been recorded yet, he said. He urged Shah to respond to the people of Rajasthan: How long will Kanhaiyalals family wait for justice? Will the BJP continue to politicise the issue, or is it serious about delivering justice? On June 28, 2022, Kanhaiyalal, a tailor from Udaipur, was brutally murdered by two men after he posted content on social media in support of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred for July 21 hearing on the film 'Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder', and asked the filmmakers to await a decision of the panel appointed by the Centre to hear objections against the movie. The panel is scheduled to meet at 2:30 pm on Wednesday. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi told the filmmakers that the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal tailor murder case can't be compensated for the loss of reputation if the film is released but the filmmakers can be in monetary terms. The filmmakers had challenged the Delhi High Court order staying the release of the movie. The bench asked the Centre's committee to take a decision immediately without loss of time after hearing all the parties. It also directed the panel to accord hearing to the accused in the murder case. The film was scheduled to be released on July 11. On July 10, the Delhi High Court stayed the release till the Centre decides on pleas seeking a permanent ban over the film's potential to promote disharmony in society. The petitions, including one filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president and Darul Uloom Deoband principal Maulana Arshad Madani before the high court, claims that a trailer of the movie released on June 26 was replete with dialogues and instances that had led to communal disharmony in 2022, and carries every potential to stoke the same sentiments again. Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered in June 2022 allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The assailants later released a video claiming that the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma following her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. Four die in Himachal, five in Rajasthan's Kota as rain plays havoc
NEW DELHI: Four people died in Himachal Pradesh as rain continues to wreak havoc in the state, while five were swept away in Rajasthan's Kota at a barrage after a heavy downpour caused the authorities to release water from a reservoir. In Himachal, more than 200 roads are out of bounds for vehicular traffic, a majority of them in Mandi, while a flash flood warning has been issued for 12 districts in Jharkhand. An individual each drowned in Kullu and Kangra districts, one died after being bitten by a snake in Bilaspur, while one was killed after falling from a height, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said. Since the onset of monsoon on June 20, 61 people have died in the state in rain-related incidents. In Rajasthan, Khatauli in Kota district recorded 198 mm of rain over 24 hours, the highest in the state. Five youths were swept away in the Chambal River Monday afternoon after the water level suddenly rose following the release of water from 12 gates of the Kota Barrage. The identity of the five missing youths is yet to be confirmed, as the rescued individual is not in a condition to provide detailed information at this stage, Digod Police Station SHO Purshottam Mehta said. Due to continuous rainfall in the region, the authorities opened all 12 gates of the Kota Barrage at 11.30 am on Monday, releasing approximately 2.2692 lakh cusecs of water downstream, said Nisha Sharma, Junior Engineer at Kota Barrage. A met department official said that a circulation system over Madhya Pradesh has intensified into a low-pressure area. Due to the system, parts of Kota, Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Udaipur divisions have seen heavy rain since yesterday. Delhi got a decent drizzle towards the evening, lifting the heavy humid pall it had sweltered under during the day. According to IMD data, Lodhi Road recorded the highest cumulative rainfall at 18.5 mm till 8.30 am on Monday. Pragati Maidan received 24.3 mm of rain, Ayanagar, 15.5 mm, Safdarjung, 15.8 mm, and Palam, 8.5 mm. In Himachal Pradesh, 208 roads, including 157 in the disaster-hit Mandi district, are closed for vehicular traffic, while 745 water supply schemes and 139 power distribution transformers were affected. The local Met office has issued an Orange alert of heavy to very heavy rain in Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur on Monday, and Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur on Tuesday. It issued a Yellow alert, meaning heavy rain, for at least three of the 12 districts till Friday. In Odisha, the weather department forecasted heavy rainfall in 19 of the 30 districts, as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked system. The India Meteorological Department cautioned fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours in the north Bay of Bengal, as squally winds, blowing at 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, were likely to prevail along and off north Odisha. A red warning was issued for extremely heavy rain, above 20 centimetres, in Mayurbhanj, Keonhar and Sundargarh. Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore were predicted to receive 12 cm to 20 cm of rain. The remaining districts were forecasted to witness 7-11 cm of precipitation. Kolkata is likely to experience spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers over the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rain is likely across South Bengal districts, as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre here. In Jharkhand, a flash flood warning was issued for Bokaro, East Singhbhum, Garhwa, Gumla, Khunti, Latehar, Lohardaga, Palamu, Ranchi, Saraikela, Simdega, and West Singhbhum districts till 11.30 am on Tuesday. Surface runoff and inundation may occur in some low-lying areas, the IMD said. A Red alert was sounded for heavy to extremely heavy rain in Saraikela-Kharswan, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum districts, and an Orange alert for Gumla, Khunti, and Simdega districts till 8.30 am on Tuesday. The weather office has issued a Yellow alert for heavy rain in Ranchi, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Jamtara, Hazaribag, Giridih, Koderma, and Deoghar till 8.30 am tomorrow.
