Manipur group says PMs free rice not reaching poor in 2 hill districts, blames black marketing

GUWAHATI: A peoples rights group in Manipur alleged rice given for free to the poor under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) is not reaching the beneficiaries in two tribal districts due to black marketing. The Movement for Peoples Rights Forum, Manipur, alleged a nexus between some officials of the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and a few transport contractors who has reportedly paralysed the monthly rice distribution system in Noney and Tamenglong districts. It sought Chief Minister N Biren Singhs immediate intervention to give relief to people affected by black marketing. The Centre had decided to continue with the scheme for five years from January 1, 2024, for the benefit of about 81.35 crore beneficiaries. This is a historic decision that places the PMGKAY amongst the worlds biggest social welfare schemes aimed at ensuring food and nutrition security. Likewise, several schemes have been initiated in Manipur with an aim to bring prosperity and development, along with the noble idea to bridge the gap between the hills and the valley, the forum said in a statement. However, it added, in contradiction to these objectives and commitments, some officials of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in connivance with a few transport contractors are indulging in unlawful practices whereby large quantities of rice entitled to the beneficiaries are being sold in the black market, mainly in Tamenglong and Noney districts, thereby depriving the basic rights of the beneficiaries. Even among those who are aware of PMGKAY, there are reports of inequitable distribution and favouritism in the allocation of benefits. This has led to further frustration and disillusionment among those who are in dire need of assistance, the forum said. It said the absence of PMGKAY benefits was disproportionately affecting the vulnerable groups such as low-income families, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. It also said that the monthly rice was not distributed to the beneficiaries in July and November of last year and February, March, April and May of this year. The beneficiaries urged the CM to initiate strict actions against the culprits as per the law and ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the scheme within a stipulated period of one week before the matter escalates into a larger crisis.

IPL 2024: Kumble Suggests Having Bigger Boundaries, And More Pronounced Seam On White Balls To Keep Bowlers In The Game

Indian Premier League: The IPL 2024 has been witness to a widening divide between bat and ball, as the batters have fearlessly racked up massive runs at the expense of the bowlers. To bring in a balance between bat and ball, India's legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble has suggested that IPL should have bigger boundaries and get more pronounced seam on white balls to keep bowlers in the game. The overall run rate in IPL 2024 stands at 9.57, which is the highest amongst all editions of the tournament, with 250+ scores above eight. Moreover, IPL 2024 has seen 1133 sixes hit so far, making it the highest number of sixes ever hit in a single edition of IPL. Its been really hard on the bowlers, especially the first half of the tournament. I certainly believe you have to maximise the boundaries at every venue and give batters the biggest possible boundaries. For starters, you can move the dugouts into the stands. I know you will lose a few seats, but so be it. Then the other aspect is to perhaps look at the white-ball having a more pronounced seam so that theres a bit more movement. The ball stops swinging just after one over or less than that. With seam slightly pronounced, there will be some movement with the ball and along with maximising the boundaries, this will help the bowlers because you need a balance between bat and ball. You cant be running in and just going through the gears, otherwise in a couple of years, you wont have too many bowlers lining up to do the bowling, as everybody wants to be a batter. You need bowlers to be a part of the game and the balance is very important in maintaining it. I am sure it will be addressed in the coming years, said Kumble, an IPL Expert, in a select virtual interaction organised by JioCinema on Thursday. Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have endured a horror season so far, resulting in them being at the bottom of the points table and already eliminated from the race to playoffs. Kumble, who served as MIs chief mentor from January 2013 to March 2016, thinks the leadership transition from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya wasnt a smooth one and felt changing the captain of the star-studded side could have happened next year. I thought the change which happened was a bit sudden obviously Rohit Sharma was leading Mumbai Indians for the last ten years and led the team to five titles. In hindsight, maybe, they could have sort of looked at Rohit to manage the team this year and then Hardik could have come in next year. But the team leadership took that decision. Having said that, they havent played good cricket they were inconsistent with the bat and that showed in the matches they played. With the kind of quality and ability batters have in Mumbai Indians, I certainly expected them to make it to the playoffs because when I chose the four teams to enter the playoffs before the start of the season, Mumbai Indians were certainly one of them. Its a matter of yes, a new captain and players not being in greatest of form that also didnt help. Hardik leading GT is different from Hardik leading MI because again he is getting into a new setup and new set of players, said Kumble. Gujarat Titans are also out of the race for playoffs and Kumble thought Shubman Gill fared well in his first year as an IPL captain. Similarly to GT as well, any captain takes time. You really cant judge Shubman I thought he was pretty aggressive in his approach when it came to captaincy and looked to take wickets. Unfortunately, a couple of injuries didnt help GT Shami was a big miss, David Miller got injured and wasnt in the best of form, as compared to the last two seasons. So, in that sense, they missed out due to form, injuries and in T20s, if some of the games dont go your way, then you dont make it. Thats how it works and I think Shubman did well in his first season as captain and with learnings from this season, he will develop and learn from here on. The Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals have already qualified for the playoffs. But the side has been on a slide in form, losing their last four consecutive matches, mainly due to the middle-order not clicking well and injuries leading to changes in personnel at times. Kumble admitted their current form is a cause of concern, but expected Samson & Co to fight back in time for next weeks playoffs. Its not a good thing going into the playoffs with four losses and it means GT need to get their act together. This happens because its a long tournament; I am sure there must be some fatigue that has set in. But having said that, some of it is by their own doing because they have meddled with some of the batters going up and down except for openers, Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag. They have sort of moved the batters around them up and down, and not played all of their overseas players, which were available to them. They have made some changes mostly tactical, that havent worked out for them. Yesterday, they played at a new venue in Guwahati, where the first match was being played. But the pitch wasnt ideal for a team that had batters looking to score runs and get their confidence back, especially the openers. So, you would expect them to have a really flat deck when they play KKR (on Sunday). But if its a slowish wicket, like what we saw yesterday, then it will be a bit more difficult for Rajasthan on that surface. Its a bit of their own doing, but sometimes you try too hard and it doesnt work. So maybe, it's time to just ease off, have a couple of days off and refresh then come back energetic and be ready for the playoffs. They are already in playoffs, so dont see them that worried, but yes, the form is a bit of a worry as a team. It takes just one or two spells or one innings by somebody to take them through, he concluded.

Assam Police to start BMI test from Aug 16: DGP

Guwahati: Assam Police personnel will undergo their annual Body Mass Index (BMI) test for the second consecutive year starting August 16, DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh said on Thursday. In a push for professionalism, the force initiated the ambitious BMI testing last year, with the DGP leading by example. One year since we announced the first of the annual BMI test for @assampolice personnel. Buoyed by encouraging first steps, it's time to start preparing for 2024 BMI test scheduled to start from August 16th 2024, Singh said in a post on X. In 2023, a total of 70,161 personnel participated in the test, with 1,748 failing due to BMI readings exceeding 30. Later, 1,884 police personnel had undergone re-examination of the BMI to make them physically fit. BMI is a measurement of a person's weight with respect to one's height. According to the World Health Organisation, a BMI over 25 is considered overweight and over 30 is obese. Earlier, the DGP had said those unable to meet weight standards by the deadline could opt for voluntary retirement, except for those with genuine medical issues like thyroidism. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had advocated for the removal of 'dead wood' from the force, including habitual drinkers, severely obese personnel, and those facing corruption charges, to transform the police force into a responsive and proactive entity.

Ministers style of talking spoiled our thousands of votes: Assam BJP MLA

GUWAHATI: An MLA of ruling BJP in Assam claimed the partys thousands of Lok Sabha election votes were spoiled due to a ministers style of talking. Mrinal Saikia, the Khumtai MLA, requested Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ask the BJP minister, Jayanta Malla Baruah, not to talk about party matters in public. Respected HCM @himantabiswa sir, pl tell @jayanta_malla to keep his mouth shut about party affairs. He should realise by now that his style of talking has already spoiled thousands of @bjp4assam votes in this #election2024, Saikia wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The MLA made the statement in the context of Baruahs certain remarks against some BJP old guards. In a veiled attack, Baruah stated what matters the most is ones dedication to the party how much time one gives to it. #8pm :- Respected HCM @himantabiswa sir, pl tell @jayanta_malla to keep his mouth shut about party affairs. He should realise by now that his style of talking has already spoiled thousands of @bjp4assam votes in this #election2024 pic.twitter.com/xoN6o9bpMN Mrinal Saikia (@Mrinal_MLA) May 15, 2024 The statement followed a show-cause notice which the BJP served on senior leader and former MLA, Ashok Sarma for publicly criticising party leadership. The BJP accused him of provoking voters against the party on the polling day. Earlier, BJP MP Dilip Saikia, who contested the parliamentary election from the Darrang-Udalguri seat, slammed Sarma, accusing him of working against him. For some time, the BJP in Assam has been affected by a clash between its old and new workers. Sarma is an old BJP leader while Baruah has a Congress past. Baruah joined the BJP in 2015 when Himanta and several other MLAs, who all were with the Congress, ditched the party to wear saffron. Sarma was elected to the Assembly in 2016 from the Nalbari seat. In 2021 however, the BJP denied a ticket to him and fielded Baruah instead. He successfully contested. Assam, which has 14 seats, went to Lok Sabha polls in the first three phases. During elections, the BJPs four-time former Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain made no bones about expressing his displeasure over the delimitation exercise of last year. He was livid that the BJP got weakened in Nagaon after the constituency had undergone massive demographic changes as a result of the delimitation exercise. His utterances had not gone down well within the party.

IPL 2024: Rajasthan lose four on the trot

CHENNAI: Already-qualified Rajasthan couldnt stem the rot as they went down to already-eliminated Punjab Kings in a low-scoring match at Guwahati, a designated home venue for the former. Rajasthan, who were on a hot streak in the first phase of the season, have now lost four on the trot. While they remain second on the table with 16 points, this loss has opened the door for Sunrisers Hyderabad to finish inside the top-two. Provided Hyderabad win Thursdays match as well as their game against Punjab in Sundays first match, Rajasthan will then need to beat Kolkata in the last game of the group stage to go through to the qualifier. Otherwise, in all likelihood, Sanju Samsons men will be playing the eliminator. On a surface not conducive for aggressive strokeplay, Rajasthan, who opted to bat first, were always behind the eight-ball. Tom Kohler-Cadmore, in for Jos Buttler, couldnt get a move and the innings was somewhat stuck in second gear. Local boy Riyan Parag provided some thrust in the second phase with a 34-ball 48 to lift the them to 144/9; he was ably supported by R Ashwin, who was used as a pinch blocker as he had come ahead of Dhruv Jurel and Rovman Powell. For the visitors, Rahul Chahar got some turn but it was an all-round bowling effort. Punjab faced some problems while chasing the target as Trent Boult and Avesh Khan dislodged the top-order with minimal fuss to reduce the side to 3/36. Yuzvendra Chahal picked up two wickets but Sam Curran and Ashutosh Sharma held their nerve to run down the target with seven balls to spare. Brief scores: RR 144/9 in 20 ovs (Parag 48, Curran 2/24; Chahar 2/26) lost to PBKS 145/5 in 18.5 ovs (Curran 63 n.o; Avesh 2/28, Chahal 2/31).

Happy to get some reward after a challenging tournament: Nathan Ellis

Happy to get some reward after a challenging tournament: Nathan Ellis Punjab Kings pacer Nathan Ellis was relieved to see his team register a much-needed win, against second-placed Rajasthan Royals, after what has been a very difficult IPL season for them. Already out of playoffs contention, PBKS are currently placed in the ninth place with 10 points after five wins and eight losses in 13 matches, while RR, who have stuttered after an excellent start, maintain their second position despite a run of four defeats in recent times. ''The wicket was a little bit slower than expected, but I still think it was a pretty good wicket. Really happy for the guys to get some reward as it has been a bit of a challenging tournament for us,'' Ellis said at the post-match press conference here on Wednesday. Batting first, RR were restricted to 144 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs and then, PBKS chased down the target of 145 for the loss of five wickets, with seven balls to spare. ''We were playing for pride today and trying to put in the best performance we can. Collectively, it was one of our better performances, adapted to conditions, bowled in partnerships. It was probably a complete performance,'' Ellis said of the win. Skipper Sam Curran's unbeaten 63 off 41 balls anchored the PBKS innings, and he received support from Jitesh Sharma, who made 22 off 20 balls, as the duo combined for a 63-run partnership for the fifth wicket to earn the team's fifth win of the season. Playing his first game in this edition of the IPL, Ellis bowled tidily to finish with miserly figures of 1/24 from his full quota of four overs. He also took the all-important wicket of Sanju Samson. ''Coming to the ground, we didn't know what we wanted to do -- bat or bowl. Later, I think we also decided on batting first. Losing the toss wasn't the desired outcome. But I was happy. We bowled first, which gave us the chance to set the tone for the day,'' Ellis said. On how the surface played at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, Ellis said: ''The wicket was a little bit slower than expected, but it was still a pretty good wicket. In the powerplay, was where the game could have been won or lost and we both lost wickets there. ''I think batting-wise, the powerplay was the best time to score and we both probably didn't have the greatest power players. And then from there the ball got a little bit softer and both teams lost wickets.''

IPL 2024: Punjab Kings Restrict Rajasthan Royals To 144/9

Indian Premier League: Rajasthan Royals batting struggle continued as the Punjab Kings excellent bowling efforts restricted them to a score of 144/9 in match 65 of the Indian Premier League at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday. It was once again the hometown hero, Riyan Parag who continued his impressive form scoring 48 runs off 34 deliveries. He replayed his innings from their previous game against CSK in a similar fashion where he had scored 47 runs off 35 deliveries. Parags contribution was the only worthwhile one in the RR batting lineup as the team was restricted to a sub par score. The Royals for the second game in a row struggled to get off to a good start in the game. Punjab captain Sam Curran who stated before the game that he certainly does not want to lose tonight started the game by backing his statement and bowled out Indian Prodigy, Yashasvi Jaiswal in the very first over. RR managed to score only 33 runs in the powerplay which was similar to their powerplay score of 42 against CSK in their previous game. This was followed by wickets at regular intervals for PBKS whose bowlers did not give the Rajasthani batters any chance of gathering rhythm. The fall of the third wicket saw the team send Ravichandran Ashwin to the crease in hopes of restoring some sort of rhythm into the team. The Indian veteran did answer the calls of the teams management as he strung together a 50-run partnership which was the largest of the night before Ashwin was caught trying to clear the boundary off Arshdeep Singh. After Ashwins departure, the middle and lower order were kept in check by the Kings bowlers. Riyan Parag lost his wicket as he was caught plumb for lbw in the final over through a slower full toss by Harshal Patel who became the leading wicket-taker with 22 wickets overtaking Jasprit Bumrah (20 wickets) with one game to go. Brief Score: Rajasthan Royals 144/9 in 20 overs (Riyan Parag 48, Ravichandran Ashwin 28; Sam Curran 2-24, Rahul Chahar 2-26) against Punjab Kings
