JD(S) leader HD Revanna detained in kidnapping case after court rejects anticipatory bail

JD(S) leader HD Revanna was detained by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Karnataka police in Bengaluru on Saturday. The arrest came subsequent to a court's refusal of his anticipatory bail request in connection with a kidnapping case registered at the KR Nagar police station in Mysuru. Revanna was apprehended by SIT officials at the Padmanabhanagar residence of his father and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. His arrest comes after a Special Court for People's Representatives in Bengaluru rejected the JD(S) leader's anticipatory bail plea in the kidnapping case. The son of the 'abducted' woman has alleged that his mother was abducted and sexually abused. In his complaint filed at the KR Nagar police station in Mysuru district, the man said his mother worked as a housemaid at HD Revanna's home for six years before returning to her village, where she worked as a daily wage labourer. The complainant said that on April 23, his mother was taken away by a man named Sathish Babanna, who claimed to have been sent by HD Revanna's wife, Bhavani Revanna. She returned home on April 26. Then on April 29, Babanna took her away again, citing an old legal issue as justification. The man later discovered a video allegedly depicting sexual abuse of his mother by incumbent MP and Hassan Lok Sabha candidate Prajwal Revanna, prompting him to confront Babanna. My mother's picture is also in the obscene video controversy. She suddenly disappeared after the videos were revealed, the son added. He then filed a kidnapping complaint against HD Revanna and Babanna on Thursday night. The Holenarsipura MLA and his associate were booked under Sections 364A (kidnapping for ransom), 365 (kidnapping with intent to cause harm) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. The FIR, registered by KR Nagar police, also lists HD Revanna as accused number one and Babanna as accused number two under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Notably, the JD(S) MLA, along with his son and party MP Prajwal Revanna, are also facing allegations of sexual abuse in connection with the 'obscene videos' case. The duo are facing a probe by the SIT, constituted by the Karnataka government, over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in their household. Revanna was booked in an alleged sexual harassment case on April 28 based on a complaint lodged with Holenarasipura Town police. The case was registered under sections 354A, 354D, 506, and 509 of the IPC on charges of sexual harassment, intimidation, and outraging the dignity of a woman. As per the complaint, the victim claimed that Prajwal Revanna and his father, HD Revanna, had sexually assaulted her. Explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days, following which the state government constituted the SIT to probe the alleged sex scandal involving the MP. Prajwal Revanna is said to have flown abroad on April 27, a day after the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka held on April 26.

Yogi Adityanath Accuses Congress of Planning to Implement Jizya Tax

Lucknow: Ut tar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath criticized the Congress party, accusing them of intending to implement the Jizya tax, originally imposed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on non-Muslim minorities. Adityanath made these remarks while addressing a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh's Ashoknagar district on Saturday, where he was campaigning for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jyotiraditya Scindia for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Adityanath referred to the Congress manifesto, highlighting its proposal for an inheritance tax, which he likened to Aurangzeb's Jizya tax. He stated, Even a civilized Muslim family does not name their son Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb was the most cruel Mughal king. Aurangzeb had imposed a tax named Jizya tax. Today, Congress also talks about the Jizya tax in its manifesto. He criticized the Congress further, claiming that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized respecting inherited property, the Congress proposed an inheritance tax in its manifesto. Adityanath asserted that Congress intended to implement the Jizya tax and questioned whether Indians would accept it. Moreover, Adityanath alleged that the Congress aimed to reduce reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Scheduled Castes (SC), citing the party's manifesto. He accused Congress of reducing OBC reservations in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh during their respective governments. Responding to Adityanath's remarks, Congress leader Pawan Khera challenged the accuracy of his claims and asked Adityanath to cite the page number in the manifesto where the Jizya tax proposal was mentioned. Khera emphasized that Yogis, like Adityanath, should speak the truth. The Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh are being conducted in four phases. The first two phases were held on April 19 and April 26, while the remaining two phases are scheduled for May 7 and May 13. Vote counting is set for June 4. Evidence Against Prajwal Revanna Withheld by Congress Government in Karnataka: Union Minister Sitharaman

Evidence Against Prajwal Revanna Withheld by Congress Government in Karnataka: Union Minister Sitharaman Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday claimed that the Congress government in Karnataka did not take action against JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna, accused of sexually abusing women, for about a year despite being aware of the matter. The Congress was afraid that it might lose Vokkaliga votes and therefore stayed silent until the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections got over, she said, speaking at a meeting with select journalists here. ''The Union home minister (Amit Shah) has made it very clear that we will not tolerate the matters that go against women and on that we stand united. Though the (BJP's) alliance partner has this issue, we have made it clear that it was not acceptable, and let it be investigated,'' Sitharaman said, when asked if the scandal will have an impact on her party's performance in Karnataka in the ongoing elections. It was being claimed that a driver gave a pen drive (allegedly containing evidence of Revanna's acts) to the Congress party and state home minister but they were sitting on this evidence for about a year, and ''now the BJP is made to answer because the JD(S) is in alliance with us,'' she said. The ministers of the Congress government knew what was in the pen drive but they did not think that safety of women should be their priority, Sitharaman alleged. ''They thought the Vokkaliga votes might go from their hands and decided to remain silent till the time the first phase of Lok Sabha got over. Now they are making it a big issue and pushing it which is typical of Congress and it shows their hypocrisy,'' the BJP leader further said, asking why probe was delayed for one year. The Karnataka government was now writing to the prime minister about the case, asking him to issue look-out notices against Prajwal Revanna and bring him back from abroad, but the Union home minister had clearly said that the Karnataka government can take all the action it wants to take, she said. Asked about BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's son Karan Singh getting ticket from the party for Kaiserganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Sitharaman said the allegations against the MP had not been proved yet. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is accused of sexually harassing women wrestlers. ''Nothing is proven against Brij Bhushan....even if he is convicted, I would say you want to carry the blame to the son. Even convicted people's children have been entertained by so many parties,'' the Union minister said. The BJP was still confident after two phases of the Lok Sabha elections of winning 370 seats on its own and 400 seats along with its NDA allies, she said. Asked if the BJP was in defence mode and responding to the opposition's narrative instead of setting its own, Sitharaman said this was not the case. ''Our response to the Congress' manifesto is not defensive, nor is it negative, rather it is more offensive and substantive,'' she said, adding that the manifesto was more of a Muslim League document. Later, in an interaction with students at an event at Deccan College in the city, Sitharaman talked about the Rohith Vemula case where the Telangana police have filed a closure report before a local court stating that the University of Hyderabad student was not a Dalit, and he died by suicide in 2016 as he feared that his ''real caste'' would be discovered. The issue was dragged to the streets without allowing the university to handle it with sensitivity, the Union minister said. ''It was an unfortunate incident. It was dragged to the streets and a narrative was built that the government was suppressing (facts) and was against students and SCs. Today, the same people who dragged the unfortunate family of Vemula on the street, should stand up before the entire country and apologise for having politicised it,'' she said.

For about over a year, Manjunath was staying with his sister at her place. According to police, the girl's family was planning to get her married and amid this, Manjunath returned to his village last week and eloped with the girl. Subsequently, the girl's family members dragged the woman onto the streets and tied her to an electric pole with rope. No Letter Received on Accusations Against Prajwal Revanna: Vijayendra

No Letter Received on Accusations Against Prajwal Revanna: Vijayendra Karnataka BJP President B Y Vijayendra on Saturday rejected claims that he was in the know about the sexual abuse allegations against Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, and asserted that the issue would have no adverse impact on the two parties in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Vijayendra asserted that he has not yet received any letter regarding the allegations till now and that such claims are ''far from the truth''. Vijayendra's comments came after BJP leader G Devaraje Gowda, who had was the party's candidate for the Holenarasipur Assembly seat against Prajwal's father H D Revanna in the May 2023 assembly elections, had claimed that he had written a letter to Vijayendra in December 2023. The letter, he claimed, informed him about the alleged explicit video clips related to the MP, and warned him about the possible embarrassment to the party if he was fielded as the NDA candidate from Hassan. JD(S) headed by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda joined the BJP-led NDA in September last year. The parties are contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections together. The 33-year-old Prajwal, who is the grandson of Deve Gowda, was the NDA candidate in the Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls on April 26. In the purported letter opposing the BJP's probable alliance with the JD(S) in Hassan, Gowda stated that he was in possession of a pen drive containing scores of explicit video clips and photos allegedly shot by Prajwal Revanna, who also allegedly used them to blackmail many women. Stating that another pen drive containing the videos and documents have reached the hands of Congress leadership, he also warned in the letter that if Prajwal is fielded as the alliance's candidate for Lok Sabha polls, there are chances of them using it as a weapon to target the BJP and cause embarrassment. ''The claims that Vijayendra was aware about the incident and a letter was written to me as the state President in this regard is not true. The person who has said it, please question him....Such incidents should not happen, everyone should bow down their heads in shame because of such incidents,'' Vijayendra said, while speaking to reporters here. Explaining further, Vijayendra said, ''I have not received any letter till this moment. I'm saying this with full responsibility...As the state president I'm saying that on this pen drive (containing explicit video clips) matter, the claims that one had written a letter to me sharing the information about the scandal is far from truth.'' ''Until this moment I have received no such letter as the party president, it has not reached me,'' he said. The state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the sexual abuse allegations against Prajwal after the videos emerged. Complaints have also been filed against him and H D Revanna, raising similar allegations, with police registering separate cases on those. Speculating that the Congress government might have gotten the pen drive containing the videos some time ago, Vijayendra alleged that the government ''purposely released'' it one day before the first phase of polling in the state, citing ''discussions among public''. He demanded answers on this from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the government. He also claimed that this scandal would have ''no impact'' on the Lok Sabha poll results, as the voters want Narendra Modi to become Prime Minister once again. ''Our party's stand is very clear, there is no question of BJP supporting such incidents in any way and those involved in it. Those who have committed wrong will face punishment,'' he said.

Cenre Lifts Ban on Onion Exports; Imposes Minimum Export Price of USD 550 Per Tonne

In just two weeks, onion price per quintal rose to Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,000 from Rs 900 to Rs 1,000 level, while retail price shot up to Rs 25 per kg from Rs 10 to Rs 15. In just two weeks, onion price per quintal rose to Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,000 from Rs 900 to Rs 1,000 level, while retail price shot up to Rs 25 per kg from Rs 10 to Rs 15. New Delhi: The government on Saturday lifted the ban on onion exports but imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne, amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the country. Last night, the government imposed a 40 per cent duty on export of onions. In August last year, India had imposed a 40 per cent export duty on onions up to December 31, 2023. The export policy of onions is amended from prohibited to free subject to MEP of USD 550 per metric ton with immediate effect and until further orders, the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification. On December 8, 2023, the government banned export of onions from March 31 this year. In March, the export prohibition was extended till further orders. In March, the Union Agriculture Ministry released the data for onion production. As per the data, onion production in 2023-24 (First Advance Estimates) is expected to be around 254.73 lakh tonnes compared to around 302.08 lakh tonnes last year. This is due to a decrease of 34.31 lakh tonnes output in Maharashtra, 9.95 lakh tonnes in Karnataka, 3.54 lakh tonnes in Andhra Pradesh and 3.12 lakh tonnes in Rajasthan, the data showed. Last month, in an official statement, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said the government has allowed export of 99,150 tonnes of onion to six neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, UAE, Bhutan, Bahrain, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. Farmers in Maharashtra had protested against the export ban. The Congress last month accused the Narendra Modi government of callously neglecting Maharashtra's onion farmers reeling due to the ban on onion exports and said that its manifesto promises a predictable import-export policy to prevent such catastrophic last-minute policies being imposed on farmers.

Revanna, a former minister, who has been served a second summons to appear for questioning before the SIT probing the case, has time till this evening to do so, Parameshwara said. ''It (lookout notice) has been issued against him (Revanna) already.....anticipating that Revanna may also plan to go abroad, it has been done,'' Parameshwara said. Prajwal has already flown abroad. A similar look out notice has been already issued against Prajwal. While speaking to reporters here, he said, ''Revanna has time till this evening to appear before SIT for inquiry. Second notice was given to him. In the meantime, in the Mysuru kidnap case he is said to have applied for a bail.'' Responding to a question on an arrest being made in the Mysuru kidnap case, the minister said, ''such things keep happening..arrests will be happening, lookout notices have been issued, several other developments will be happening, many things may not come to the public domain.'' A first case was registered against the father and son duo for alleged sexual harassment at the Holenarsipura police station in Hassan district last Sunday, based on a complaint by a woman who worked in Revanna's house. The second FIR was registered against Revanna and his confidant Sathish Babanna in Mysuru on Thursday night for allegedly abducting a woman, who is also reportedly a victim of sexual abuse. Asked, while Satish Babanna, the second accused in the kidnap case has been arrested, but first accused Revanna has not been arrested yet, Parameshwara said, ''He (Revanna) has been given an opportunity, notice has been given to him under section 41 A of CrPC and he will have to appear (before SIT). ''He has been served the second notice and he has 24 hours time, which will end today, after which whatever action should be taken will be taken.'' To a question regarding arresting Prajwal, Parameshwara said, ''He will have to come back (from abroad). If not today, day-after-tomorrow or after that he will have to come. After that, procedurally, whatever has to be done, like arrest and other things will be done.'' The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna, who is the grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's candidate from Hassan, which went to the polls on April 26. His advocate had sought for seven days time for him to appear before SIT, to which the investigating team has replied it is not possible as there is no such provision. The second FIR was filed against Prajwal Revanna, this time by the CID in Bengaluru on Wednesday based on a complaint by a JD(S) party worker, who alleged she was raped by him at gunpoint. He later made a video of her and blackmailed the woman saying he would make it viral if she did not fulfill his lust whenever he demanded, the complaint said. Meanwhile, the SIT team did the 'spot mahazar' at Revanna's Holenarsipura residence in the presence of the victim on Saturday, according to sources.

SIT likely to seek 'Blue Corner Notice' from CBI against Prajwal Revanna Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday was informed by officials of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged sex scandal involving Prajwal Revanna that there is a possibility of the CBI issuing a ''Blue Corner Notice'', against the Hasssan MP. Siddaramaiah held an ''important meeting'' with SIT officials, during which he instructed that immediate action be taken to arrest Prajwal Revanna. ''We will proceed for arrest with appropriate measures. There is a possibility of CBI issuing a Blue Corner Notice, which will speed up the investigation,'' the officials told the CM, according to a release from his office. ''They (SIT officials) have assured that they will arrest and get the accused back, as soon as they get the information from the airports,'' it said. A Blue Corner Notice is issued by the international police cooperation body to collect additional information from its member countries about a person's identity, location or activities in relation to a crime. The SIT is said to have sent a request to the CBI, the nodal body for Interpol matters in India, seeking a Blue Corner Notice against Prajwal Revanna, official sources said. ''Once CBI issues this notice, SIT hopes to get information about the whereabouts of Prajwal Revanna,'' they said. The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna, who is the grandson of former PM H D Deve Gowda, was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's candidate from Hassan, which went to the polls on April 26. Explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days, following which the state government constituted the SIT to probe the scandal. His advocate had sought for seven days' time for him to appear before the SIT, to which the investigating team has replied it is not possible as there is no such provision. At the meeting, the chief minister was briefed by the SIT officials about the developments so far in the case, his office said in the statement. The officials explained to Siddaramaiah that Prajwal Revanna, the main accused in the case, is ''missing'', and that a lookout notice has been issued against him, and intensive search is also being conducted. ''Immediate action should be taken to arrest Prajwal Revanna. Decisive and strict action should be taken against those involved in the case,'' the chief minister said as he gave stern instructions to the officials that negligence and delay in this matter will not be tolerated.

Extend all possible support to victims in sexual abuse case: Rahul to Siddaramaiah

Extend all possible support to victims in sexual abuse case: Rahul to Siddaramaiah Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has requested Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to extend all possible support to the victims in the alleged sexual abuse of several women involving the sitting Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna. He also asked Siddaramaiah to ensure that all those responsible for these ''heinous crimes are brought to book''. Responding to the letter written by Gandhi, the chief minister on Saturday took to 'X' and assured that his government is committed to protecting the victims of rape and injustice by Prajwal Revanna. ''An impartial investigation will be conducted and no matter how many influential people are involved in the case, they will be handed over to the hands of the law. Along with wiping tears of the aggrieved, I am giving a promise @Rahul Gandhi and to everyone in the country that our government will stand with them in their struggle for justice,'' he posted in Kannada. In his letter to Siddaramaiah dated May 3, Gandhi alleged that Prajwal sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years. Many who looked up to him as a brother and son were ''brutalised in the most violent manner and robbed of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters warrants the strictest possible punishment.'' The Congress leader expressed that he is deeply shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, our Home Minister Amit Shah was informed by G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwal Revanna's antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator. ''What is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the senior most BJP leadership, the prime minister campaigned and canvassed for a mass rapist. Furthermore, the Union Government willfully allowed him to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation. ''The deeply perverse nature of these crimes and the absolute impunity enjoyed by Prajwal Revanna with the blessings of the prime minister and home minister deserves the strongest condemnation,'' he stated in the letter. It also stated that how in his two decades in public life, he has never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of ''untold violence against women''. ''From our wreslters in Haryana to our sisters in Manipur, Indian women are bearing the brunt of the prime minister's tacit support for such criminals,'' the letter alleged. The letter further stated that the Congress party has a moral duty to fight for justice for our mothers and sisters. I understand that the Karnataka Government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the grave allegations, and a request has been made to the prime minister to cancel Prajwal Revannas diplomatic passport and get him extradited to India at the earliest. ''I request you to kindly extend all possible support to the victims. They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book,'' the letter added.

Adityanath criticizes Congress manifesto, alleges similarities to Aurangzeb's rule

Adityanath criticizes Congress manifesto, alleges similarities to Aurangzeb's rule Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said the Congress manifesto talked of 'jizya' (tax imposed on non-Muslims in medieval India) and promotion of cow slaughter and likened it to the ''cruel rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb''. He also accused the Congress of wanting to snatch the quota benefits of SC, STs and Other Backward Classes to please ''its vote bank''. Addressing a rally in Ashok Nagar town of Guna Lok Sabha constituency in support of BJP candidate and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the UP CM hailed the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing respect to faith, bringing welfare schemes for the poor and honour to the country. ''You have heard the name of a cruel Mughal ruler called Aurangzeb. Decent Muslim families don't name their children after him. He levied jizya. What is it? It is inheritance tax being talked about by the Congress,'' Adityanath claimed. On the other hand, PM Modi says heritage should be respected as our movement for Ram temple in Ayodhya continued for 500 years and lakhs of Hindus were martyred, Adityanath told the gathering. ''Forget about respect to heritage, the Congress is talking about levying tax on the wealth of your ancestors. Rahul Gandhi says he will X-ray your property and take half of it after his party comes to power and it will be called virasat tax (inheritance tax). Will you ever give jizya? No Indian can accept this,'' he said. Attacking the Congress manifesto further, he said that party will try to curtail quota benefits of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBCs and give it to its vote banks as it had done in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Adityanath claimed the Congress wants to give minorities all freedom to eat and drink as per their choice and then went on to link it to cow slaughter and beef consumption. ''Are the food habits of minorities different from that of the majority (community? The general food habits are the same but the majority of society does not eat beef and opposes cow slaughter. Now Congress has stooped so low that it will support cow slaughter,'' UP chief minister alleged. ''This is not the Congress that contributed to the Independence struggle. Will you become a partner in this sin? Will there be cow slaughter in the land of Ram and Krishna?'' he asked the crowd. Hailing Modi, the UP CM cited the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the welfare schemes being run by the Centre. ''Terrorism and Naxalism were at their peak before 2014. But now Pakistan comes forward with a clarification even if a firecracker bursts in India. This is new India. We are not aggressors but we don't spare those who make a move against us,'' Adityanath said. Adityanath hailed the Scindias for their fight against the Afghans several centuries ago and recalled the contribution of Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia, grandmother of the Union minister, in the Ram Temple movement and nation building. Addressing the gathering, Union minister Scindia listed the development works carried out in Guna. He said he had heard about corruption and the presence of the land mafia in Ashok Nagar and warned them of action after the elections. Guna will go to polls on May 7.

Congress Targets 18 Parliamentary Seats in Karnataka

Mangaluru: Amidst fervent speculation, Congress leaders in Karnataka have set their sights on securing over 18 parliamentary seats in the upcoming elections. Their optimism stems from the remarkable performance in the last year's assembly elections, where they clinched 135 seats, coupled with the successful implementation of five guarantee schemes. We secured 135 assembly seats in the previous election. If we translate this victory, it would equate to 18 parliamentary seats, KPCC working president Manjunath Bhandary told Deccan Chronicle. Our track record of delivering on these promises has resonated positively with the people. Therefore, we are confident of surpassing 18 seats in the parliamentary elections, he expressed hope. Bhandary emphasized the comparative failures of the BJP government in fulfilling promises in 10 years, contrasting them with Congress's successful implementation of assurances within months of coming to power. He also highlighted Prime Minister Modi's recent speeches, criticizing the absence of a report card on the government's achievements and instead focusing on tangential issues like 'Mangalsutra,' which, according to him, indicates BJP's apprehension. Congress leaders are eyeing and setting strategies to win those cosntiteuncies in North Karnataka region where the party had lost the last election by a small margin and also those places where there is unhappiness within BJP. Meanwhile, BJP leaders, while acknowledging the potential impact of the guarantee schemes, assert that the voting patterns of the people will remain in favor of the Modi government in the parliamentary elections, citing satisfaction with its performance.

Startup funding in India declined by 17 per cent in FY24

NEW DELHI: The startup funding in India registered a decline of 17 per cent in FY 24 as compared to the previous year. In 2021 the investment professionals were getting on average six deals daily but in 2024, it has declined to three. According to a report titled 'India Invests' by Wealth 360 One, the private equity of value USD 100-250 million range, is down by 60 per cent. While those investing USD 500 million or more too have gone down drastically by over 80 per cent. The funds investing less than USD 100 million have also registered a decline of 30 per cent. But funding under USD 5 million is still happening at a steady rate. The report highlights that the bigger deals, over USD 25 million, which usually happen when a startup is growing, have also decreased. This means there's less money going into startups overall, especially in the medium to large-sized deals. Late-stage venture capital investments have been hit hard too. Startups raised nearly USD 8 billion from investors this year, marking a 50% decrease from FY 22-23. As per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry data, India is home to 111 unicorns with a total valuation of USD 349.67 billion. Out of the total number of unicorns, 45 unicorns with a total valuation of USD 102.30 billion were born in 2021 and 22 unicorns with a total valuation of USD 29.20 billion born in 2022. In 2023 only one unicorn emerged. India houses 1.7 lakh registered Startups, collectively generating over 1.2 million jobs. Maharashtra leads with 5801 Startups, followed by Delhi NCR with 3150, Karnataka with 3032, and Tamil Nadu with 2810 Startups. This slowdown in funding isn't just in one area of investment. Both private investment and venture capital funding have taken a hit, especially after the surge seen in 2021-2022 during the pandemic. Angel investors, who usually support startups in the early stages, are putting more money in, but they're choosing fewer startups to back. On the other hand, venture capital deals have also dropped by half in FY24 from the previous year. According to the report, consumer-focused sectors and technology are facing the most caution from investors. These sectors are experiencing a big drop in the number of deals and the total amount of money. But the industrial and materials sectors are staying steady, while others like financial services and healthcare are doing better. Investors, especially in the tech sector have declined. They want to see profits and realistic values before investing. This caution has led to almost half the amount of money being invested in the tech sector compared to before. Similar decreases are seen in consumer staples and discretionary companies as investors look for safer bets. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu are the top five states to attract substantial investments by private equity funds. In terms of cities, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Pune are the top cities that attracted maximum PE investments. However, the investments in FY24 is up to 30 per cent less as compared to FY23 in most of the states. The experts have attributed the decline to the reduced investment in Indian Startups. Mumbai has surpassed India's silicon city Bengaluru in attracting PE funds as Startup funding has substantially lowered in FY24.

Karnataka BJP alleges lack of protection for girls, women under Congress government

Karnataka BJP alleges lack of protection for girls, women under Congress government The BJP on Saturday slammed the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government over the law and order situation in Karnataka and alleged that young girls and women had no protection. Sharing a newsreport where a minor Dalit girl was allegedly impregnated by a youth in Hubballi, the BJP took to social media platform to condemn the incident. In a post on 'X', the BJP alleged that the minor girl was ''raped by a fanatic'' and that there is no ''protection for Hindu young women and girls in Hubballi.'' ''Hindu young women are today victims of the mistake of giving power to terrorists, rapists, fanatic Jhihadists called brothers @INCKarnataka like the Kerala files,'' the party alleged in the post. Meanwhile, a youth has been arrested for allegedly impregnating minor girl in Hubballi, police said. Citing the recent murder case of Congress Councillor Niranjan Hiremath's 23-year-old daughter Neha, who was stabbed to death inside her college campus in Hubballi, the BJP attacked the state government over the investigation in the case. The case is being probed by the State's Criminal Investigation Department. ''While Neha's murder case in Hubballi is still pending, another inhumane incident has made Kannadigas to lower their heads. If they @siddaramaiah and @Dr Parameshwara (Home Minister) do not crush the bigots immediately, the Hindus will destroy the government,'' the BJP said in the post.

In a letter to Siddaramaiah, Gandhi condemned the actions of Revanna, an MP from the southern state, and accused him of enjoying immunity with the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In a veiled attack on Modi, the Congress leader said he has never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women. I request you to kindly extend all possible support to the victims, Gandhi said in his letter to the Karnataka chief minister. They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book, he added. Describing the incidents as horrific sexual violence unleashed by the incumbent member of Parliament from Hassan, Gandhi alleged that Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years. Many who looked up to him as a brother and son were brutalised in the most violent manner and robbed of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters warrants the strictest possible punishment. I am deeply shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, our Home Minister Shri Amit Shah was informed by Shri G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwal Revanna's antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator, the former Congress chief said. Revoke Prajwals passport, Karnataka CM tells PM again He said what is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the seniormost leadership of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre, Modi campaigned and canvassed for a mass rapist. Furthermore, the Union government wilfully allowed him to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation. The deeply perverse nature of these crimes and the absolute impunity enjoyed by Prajwal Revanna with the blessings of the Prime Minister and Home Minister deserves the strongest condemnation, Gandhi said. In my two decades in public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women. From our wrestlers in Haryana to our sisters in Manipur, Indian women are bearing the brunt of the Prime Minister's tacit support for such criminals, he alleged. In this backdrop, Gandhi said the Congress has a moral duty to fight for justice for our mothers and sisters. I understand that the Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the grave allegations, and a request has been made to the Prime Minister to cancel Prajwal Revanna's diplomatic passport and get him extradited to India at the earliest, he said. Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MLA from Holenarasipura in Karnataka's Hassan district, is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda and elder brother of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. He is facing allegations of sexually abusing women. Amid Prajwal row, BJP-JDS alliance likely to continue for Council polls

Onion Exports Resume with Minimum Price Threshold of USD 550/Tonne

Onion Exports Resume with Minimum Price Threshold of USD 550/Tonne The government on Saturday lifted the ban on onion exports but imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne, amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the country. Last night, the government imposed a 40 per cent duty on export of onions. In August last year, India had imposed a 40 per cent export duty on onions up to December 31, 2023. ''The export policy of onions is amended from prohibited to free subject to MEP of USD 550 per metric ton with immediate effect and until further orders,'' the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification. The Congress last month accused the Narendra Modi government of ''callously neglecting'' Maharashtra's onion farmers reeling due to the ban on onion exports and said that its manifesto promises a predictable import-export policy to prevent such catastrophic last-minute policies being imposed on farmers.

Maharashtra MLAs Seek Maiden Parliament Term from Solapur

Maharashtra MLAs Seek Maiden Parliament Term from Solapur The fight for the Solapur Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra is between two sitting MLAs who are trying their fortunes for the first time in parliamentary politics. Congress candidate and former Maharashtra chief minister Sushilkumar Shinde's daughter Praniti Shinde is a three-time MLA from the Solapur City Central assembly constituency while BJP nominee Ram Satpute represents the Malshiras assembly segment. Praniti is the third member of the Shinde family who is contesting the election from the Solapur Lok Sabha seat. Her father represented this constituency thrice - in 1998, 1999 and 2009, but he could not win the election in 2014 and 2019. In 2004, her mother Ujwala Shinde contested the seat unsuccessfully. Historically, the Solapur seat has been a stronghold of the Congress, but the party lost it seat in 2014 and again in 2019. It is currently represented by Jai Siddheshwar Shivacharya Swami of the BJP. It 2014, it was represented by another party leader Sharad Bansode. Polling for this seat will be held in the third phase on May 7. Solapur district is located close to the Karnataka border. It is famous for ''Solapuri chaddar'', its cotton blankets. It is also known for the handloom and powerloom industry and leads the state in the manufacturing of beedis, hand-rolled cigarettes wrapped in tendu leaves. One of the biggest issues that haunts the district is shortage of water, with locals saying that they get water once in six to seven days. Another matter of concern is unemployment with the locals saying that industrial development was missing in the region. Rahul Gaikwad of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) led by Prakash Ambedkar, son of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, withdrew from the poll race on the final day of withdrawal of nomination forms. The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) did not field a candidate this time even as it had received a significant number of votes in the last election. The VBA has now supported independent candidate Atish Bansode. Praniti Shinde, who is fighting her maiden Lok Sabha election, said, ''Solapur is a big constituency with a different set of problems. I have tried to cover each assembly constituency here by going there and understanding the problems faced by the people to see how they suffered under the BJP rule.'' On the Congress's allegation that the BJP was ignoring the issue of water scarcity in Solapur, Satpute said, ''It is just Congress' narrative. I want the residents of Solapur to know that a water scheme worth Rs 650 crore of a parallel pipeline has been planned by the Centre to bring water from Ujani dam to Solapur. The work is underway and in the coming five months, the water woes will be resolved.'' ''In the nearby Akkalkot region, water was made available for irrigation purposes by the Modi government, but for 40 years, Congress did not do anything,'' he alleged. Satpute expressed confidence that the BJP will retain power for the third time in the constituency. ''Her (Praniti's) father (Sushilkumar Shinde) faced defeat in Lok Sabha polls from here twice. Our party leader Subash Deshmukh defeated her mother (Ujwala Shinde). This is for the fourth time that the Congress gave a ticket to a member of the same family because they didn't find any other party worker. She will also be defeated now. The Solapur voter is intelligent and will choose BJP,'' he said. The handloom and powerloom weaving industry provides employment to a large number of workers. There are 115 units of 29 various beedi factories and there are about 70,000 women who are involved in the beedi-making process, while the number of factory workers is 1,725 in the district, according to official figures. One of the issues faced by the women who make the beedis at home is that since 2016, the wages they used to get every week as cash, now get deposited in the bank once a month. Shinde said, ''Beedi workers took a big hit when demonetisation happened. They used to get paid in cash on a weekly basis, but they don't get cash any more, which is an issue for them. Daily wage workers need cash in hand and demonetisation did not have a desired effect. Why they imposed it is still a mystery.'' To campaign for Satpute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an election rally in Solapur on April 29, while Uddhav Thackeray addressed a public meeting the same day to drum up support for Shinde.
