Above-normal Southwest monsoon chances bring hope for India's agricultural sector: Geojit report

Multiple meteorological organisations are predicting above-normal rainfall during this year's southwest monsoon season in the Indian subcontinent. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the total rainfall from June to September to be 106% of the long-period average. Last year's southwest monsoon ended with a 6% deficit due to El Nino, causing variations in rainfall distribution. Some regions experienced shortages while others, like West Rajasthan and Saurashtra-Kutch, received ample rainfall. However, 7 subdivisions, including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, experienced deficient rainfall.

Anticipated above-normal Southwest monsoon brings hope for India's agricultural sector: Geojit report

Anticipated above-normal Southwest monsoon brings hope for India's agricultural sector: Geojit report Multiple meteorological organizations are anticipating abundant rainfall during this year's southwest monsoon season in the Indian subcontinent. According to Geojit insights, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects above-normal rainfall, with the total from June to September anticipated to be 106 per cent of the long-period average. Private forecaster Skymet Weather Services and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Climate Centre have echoed similar forecasts. Last year, the southwest monsoon ended with a 6 per cent deficit of the long-period average, mainly due to El Nino, resulting in wide spatial and temporal variations in rainfall distribution. However, regions that generally receive good rainfall experienced shortages, while dry regions like West Rajasthan and Saurashtra-Kutch received bountiful rainfall. Out of the total 36 meteorological subdivisions, 7 subdivisions, including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, experienced deficient rainfall. The forecast of normal monsoon rains this year comes as a relief at a time when agricultural output is declining, and food inflation remains high, exacerbated by dwindling water levels in reservoirs. Slow growth in agriculture is mainly attributed to declining farm output, with food grain production expected to decline by six percent in 2023-24. The deficient monsoons last year and warmer, drier weather due to El Nino have left considerable impact on water levels in reservoirs across the country. Currently, reservoir storage stands at 31 per cent of the total live storage capacity, significantly lower than the 10-year average. With the summer approaching its peak, the situation in southern India, where reservoir levels are critically low, has worsened, increasing the threat of drought. Apart from affecting standing crops and agricultural productivity, dwindling water levels could impact other sectors as well. The prediction of normal monsoons this year brings hope for boosting the production of kharif crops such as rice, soybean, sugarcane, and pulses, cooling down food inflationary pressures, and replenishing water resources. However, the arrival, distribution, intensity, and departure of the monsoon remain crucial factors that will impact agricultural production and productivity. Skymet expects good rainfall in southern, western, and northwestern parts of the country, with Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh expected to receive adequate rainfall. However, eastern states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal may face the risk of deficit rainfall during peak monsoon months, impacting kharif crops heavily dependent on early rainfall. Additionally, heavy showers during the latter half of the monsoon season may pose a threat to standing crops across the country. (ANI)

Tripura grapples with fuel crisis, govt imposes restrictions

Tripura grapples with fuel crisis, govt imposes restrictions The fuel scarcity gripping Tripura has taken a new turn as the closure of both railway lines and roads compounded the region's woes. With transportation arteries severed, the already precarious situation has escalated, leaving residents facing unprecedented challenges in accessing essential supplies of petrol and diesel. The closure of railway lines, a vital lifeline for fuel transportation into Tripura, has severed a crucial supply route, exacerbating the existing shortage. Additionally, the shutdown of key roads further compounds the issue, restricting the movement of fuel tankers and hindering efforts to replenish dwindling stocks at petrol pumps. The convergence of these factors has created a perfect storm of scarcity, with petrol pumps forced to ration fuel supplies and impose stringent limitations on sales. As a result, long queues of vehicles snake their way around operational fuel stations, as motorists vie for their share of the dwindling resources. In the face of adversity, Tripura's residents demonstrate resilience, rallying together to confront the challenges posed by the fuel shortage. As communities unite in their efforts to conserve resources and support one another, the hope remains that the region will emerge from this crisis stronger and more prepared for future challenges. Connectivity to get fully restored in four days, says Tripura Transport Minister

Connectivity to get fully restored in four days, says Tripura Transport Minister Tripura Transport and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Friday assured that the rail and road connectivity will be restored in four days. Railway and roadway connectivity for Tripura is likely to be fully restored within a couple of days and things will certainly move forward in a positive direction once the connectivity issues are resolved, Tripura Transport and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Choudhary told ANI amidst the fuel crisis looming large all over the state. A significant number of fuel stations have been out of operation after Tripura was virtually cut off from the rest of the North Eastern region due to harsh weather conditions prevailing in parts of Assam. In some areas, roads have been caved which disrupted the supplies in the state. The crisis of petroleum products is quite palpable all over. The state government has already imposed restrictions on fuel refilling. A review meeting was organised on Friday at the civil secretariat here in Agartala. The official update that we have received from the authorities indicated that in the next few days, things will be normal again, the Minister added. On being contacted, Additional Secretary Food and Civil Supplies Department Normal Adhikari said, The railway authorities have informed us that on May 5, they will resume services. Once the railway route is open, all our problems will be solved. Till then, we are getting limited supplies through roadways. The roadway supply is not enough which is why the restrictions are imposed. On being asked whether the alternative Bangladesh route will be explored for bringing essential supplies to Tripura, Adhikari said, To get approval for transportation of goods through Bangladesh would be a lengthy process. The updates that we have received from Assam are quite satisfactory and hopefully, things will turn out to be positive for us. By the time we get approval for the Bangladesh route, railway services will be restored. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee Accuses Governor of Improper Conduct

Mamata Banerjee Accuses Governor of Improper Conduct West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Friday strongly criticised Governor C V Ananda Bose for his alleged misconduct towards a woman employee of Raj Bhavan, which came to light yesterday evening. Addressing an election rally in Purba Bardhaman, Banerjee expressed astonishment at the governor's behaviour towards the woman who had gone to Raj Bhavan looking for a job. ''Yesterday, a young woman who worked at Raj Bhavan came out and spoke against the governor's harassment...the tears of the woman broke my heart. I have seen her video testimony, she said. Banerjee questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited Raj Bhavan last night, remained silent on the issue. ''The woman cried and walked out saying she was too scared to work at Raj Bhavan anymore. She said that she was called at odd hours and was subjected to harassment. And these are the people who talk about the dignity of our mothers and sisters?'' Banerjee said. Bose on Thursday had said he will not be cowed down by ''engineered narratives'' and the ''truth shall triumph'', hours after TMC leaders claimed that the woman had lodged a police complaint against the governor for molestation. Banerjee also criticised the Election Commission for transferring around 1,500 police officers from West Bengal to other states for election duties, without reciprocal assistance from other states. ''No police personnel from other states have come to West Bengal, the EC had sent only central forces. But strangely, no one from state police sent elsewhere were allowed to cast postal ballots. The poll panel is not allowing this'', she said, adding, ''We will not sit tight. We will take it to its logical conclusion and fight to the end''. Asserting that democracy is under threat in the country, Banerjee accused the BJP of manipulating EVMs and spreading falsehoods during campaigning. Banerjee criticised the BJP for its policies, including the NRC, CAA, and Uniform Civil Code, which she argued undermine people's rights. She also accused the BJP of hypocrisy, alleging that it failed to reinstate jobs lost under CPI(M) rule in Tripura, despite promising to do so before coming to power. ''The BJP snatched away jobs of school teachers in West Bengal. The party is now saying they will help those who lost their jobs. It had said the same thing before coming to power in Tripura when 10,000 jobs were taken away during CPI(M) rule in the state. Have those jobs been reinstated by the BJP after coming to power there'', she asked. Banerjee said in West Bengal, the CPI(M), Congress, and BJP are fighting together. ''Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed his indiscretion by questioning Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest from Rae Bareli while speaking at a public rally. Rahul Gandhi's choice seems justified. How does it matter to Modi. At some point, he (Modi) contested from multiple seats. Even BJP leaders have done the same,'' she said.

Tripura eyes GI tag for bamboo-made handicrafts

Tripura eyes GI tag for bamboo-made handicrafts Endowed with rich and diverse resources of bamboo with traditional usage Tripura is home to 21 species of bamboo out of 130 species available in India. To protect and preserve the origins of this traditional craftsmanship that is now gradually taking the shape of an organised industry, the Government of Tripura has applied for the Geographical Indication tag for cane craft. Cane is derived from bamboo through different mechanisms. Tripura produces abundant bamboo and cane which are used to make different types of Handicrafts like chairs, tables, mats, hats, bags, hand fans, containers etc. The GI tag helps to protect these handicrafts from being imitated and ensures that the consumers receive genuine and high-quality products. Recently, a total of three products that include, indigenous attires Risha and Rignai and Malabari Pera received GI tag. The few applications that are pending right now include, Tripura Cane Craft, Reang Jewellery, and others. Lauding the state government's initiatives to give this traditional artistry a recognition, bamboo entrepreneur Manoj Kumar Debnath said, I have been working in the field of bamboo handicraft for the last 30 years. The initiative of the state government to get GI tag for the cane and bamboo crafts is praiseworthy. Once the GI tag is accorded, the whole world will know about our expertise in this field. According to Debnath, Tripura-made bamboo handicrafts have received widespread appreciation at the national as well as at the global level. The bamboo handicrafts of Tripura are very famous. In India and outside the country everywhere, the Tripura-made products are highly valued. Once the GI tag is accorded, more people will get to know about us and certainly chances are high for the business to grow, said Debnath. Meanwhile, an expert in bamboo-based product manufacturing Abhinav Kant who is now heading the Bamboo and Cane Development Institute in Tripura opined that GI tagging is important to protect the originality of the products found here. According to him, the Tripura artisans are well versed in the bamboo weaving work used for basket making, which is unique in the country. So far I could understand, bucket products produced here could become an ideal choice for getting the GI tag certification, he added. The weaving patterns that are used here by the artisans are unique. If these things get GI tag the importance of Tripura will grow, he said. Kant also said that a GI tag helps in branding of a particular product which is a part of the culture of a place. (ANI)

BJPs rise to put pressure on BJD, Congress in Koraput

JEYPORE: Swimming against the current, the BJP has emerged as a strong force in Koraput changing the political dynamics and challenging the status quo in the region. Historically, the BJP struggled to establish vote banks in Koraput due to a lack of strong leadership and organisational activities. However, the tide began to turn with the Modi wave during the 2019 elections, where BJP candidates improved vote share across the district. This time around, groundwork by the BJP well in advance of the elections has extended the partys reach to the grassroots level, particularly in tribal areas. The frequent visits of Central ministers and repeated meetings have bolstered the partys image, posing a threat to its opponents. The growing influence of the Modi factor, particularly after the consecration of Ram Lalla temple and anti-incumbency sentiments against the ruling BJD, have further boosted the BJPs prospects in many areas of the district. Unlike previous elections, where the BJP posed minimal threat, the partys candidates are now on par with their rivals from BJD and Congress in all five Assembly constituencies (AC) of Koraput district, believe political analysts. In 2019, party candidate in Koraput AC Tripurari Garada had secured 33,994 votes (24.83 pc). Similarly, Kotpad candidate Khageswar Pujari got 35,366 votes (21.08 pc ), whereas in Pottangi AC, BJP candidate Ram Chandra Pangi logged 25,956 votes (17.8 pc). In Laxmipur and Jeypore ACs, BJP candidates fared equally well, improving their tally. Poll pundits predict there will be a substantial increase in BJP votes, much higher than in 2019. The BJPs candidates in Koraput district include Raghuram Macha for Koraput, Goutam Samantray for Jeypore, Kailash Kulesika for Laxmipur, Chaitanya Nandibali for Pottangi, and Rupu Bhatra for Kotpad.

Tripura Ex-CM meets Odisha BJP leaders to bolster party's electoral prospects Former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb held a closed-door meeting with Odisha BJP leaders here on Saturday and discussed strategies to increase the vote share of the saffron camp in the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections in the eastern state, party sources said. The discussion was held two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during a meeting with party leaders, had reportedly mentioned that the BJP's vote share soared from 2-3 per cent in Tripura and it managed to come to power there. Sources said Deb was invited by the Odisha BJP to sharpen its strategies before the polls and guide it to achieve the goal. Deb, the Rajya Sabha MP, is expected to stay in Odisha for a month till the end of the elections in the state, they said. Shah had also said that the BJPs vote share in Odisha in the 2019 assembly elections was 32 per cent and 38 per cent in the Lok Sabha polls. ''Therefore, an increase in BJP's vote share is possible and the party can form the government in the state,'' Shah said in the meeting. The Odisha BJP is also contemplating consulting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while making its strategies for the elections, a senior party leader said. Assam was another state where the BJP improved its vote share and formed the government. If required, we will consult chief ministers of other BJP-ruled states and strategists to achieve the goal in Odisha, the party leader said. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, one of the BJPs star campaigners, is scheduled to participate in a roadshow for party nominee Pradip Purohit from the Bargarh Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday. Sai will join the roadshow in the Jharsuguda assembly segment.

He addressed the huge public meeting in Rabakavi Banahatti and called upon the people to ensure the victory of Bagalkote Congress Lok Sabha candidate Samyukta Patil. After the first phase of elections to 102 Lok Sabha constituencies in the country, Modi has clearly got the hint that the BJP will lose. For this reason, he is telling terrible lies. Suvendu Adhikari Demands TMC Declared 'Terrorist Outfit' After Arms Recovery

Kolkata: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) -led West Bengal government after arms and ammunition, including foreign-made revolvers, were recovered from the premises of suspended TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan in Sandeshkhali. Adhikari demanded that the ruling party be declared a terrorist outfit. Adhikari stated, All the weapons found in Sandeshkhali are foreign. Explosives like RDX are used in horrific anti-national activities. All these weapons are used by international terrorists. I demand to declare Trinamool Congress as a terrorist organization... This state is a paradise. People who watched the trailer on the incident in Khadikul, Egra, today watched the movie amid the recovery of RDX and deadly weapons in Sandeshkhali. Mamata Banerjee is fully responsible for this incident. I demand to arrest Mamata Banerjee and declare Trinamool Congress as a terrorist organization, as reported by the media. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at two premises of Sheikh Shahjahan, the main accused in the Sandeshkhali violence, related to a January attack on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team by a mob allegedly incited by the now-suspended leader. According to a statement by the central agency, The CBI seized three foreign-made revolvers, one foreign-made pistol, one Indian revolver, one Colt official issue police revolver, one country-made pistol, 120 nine mm bullets, 50 cartridges of .45 calibre, 50 cartridges of .380, and eight cartridges of .32. Sandeshkhali experienced significant unrest earlier this year when women villagers accused Shahjahan and his aides of sexual harassment and land grabbing. After being suspended by the TMC for six years, Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on February 29. The Boy's Revenge on His Ex-Girlfriend Leaves Everyone Stunned

A startling incident has emerged from Turkey, here in Izmir, where a man recently sought revenge on his ex-girlfriend in a way that caught everyone's attention. The incident occurred around 9:00 pm last week, when more than two dozen food parcels arrived in front of an apartment building on Simen Street in Izmir's Balatova district. The bizarre sight of parcels from different restaurants and over 50 food delivery boys crowding the scene was captured on cameras by passersby. The entire food delivery was intended for a single woman who was puzzled by what was happening. The matter quickly caught the attention of the press, and investigations commenced without delay. It was found that a man had sent all these food parcels to the woman under a fake name. Along with placing the orders, the man had opted for the cash-on-delivery option available on the food app, YemeiSipariEtti, which required the woman to pay and potentially engage in a dispute with the delivery boys. It was revealed that the person behind this elaborate prank was the woman's ex-boyfriend, who was attempting to harass her following the end of their relationship. Instead of using the correct phone number, the man used a suspicious number, 0555 555 55 55. However, some restaurants noticed the odd number and attempted to call for verification, but others did not make such efforts. Consequently, more than 50 orders arrived at the same address simultaneously, with delivery boys waiting outside the building for payment. What's astounding is that even after so many incidents, none of the restaurants considered filing a complaint with the police or investigating the matter further. No one even attempted to identify the suspicious activity. However, upon being contacted by journalists, several restaurants in Izmir admitted to falling victim to the prank. One restaurant owner mentioned that many other restaurants had called them to warn about fake orders, but by then, the food had already been dispatched. All orders were eventually returned, and unfortunately, the food had to be discarded. However, it has not been confirmed yet whether the person was betrayed in love, but some news outlets have reported it in a similar manner. Congress was biased against Hindus for vote bank, today they're exposed: PM Modi in Bihar's Araria

Congress was biased against Hindus for vote bank, today they're exposed: PM Modi in Bihar's Araria In a fresh attack against Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Friday that the grand old party was iased against Hindus for vote bank. The first right on the resources of our country lies with the poor of this country irrespective of religion. The way Congress was biased against the Hindus of India for their vote bank, today they have been exposed, PM Modi said while addressing a public rally in Bihar's Araria. The Prime Minister attacked the INDIA bloc over the Supreme Court decision rejecting the plea for 100 per cent VVPAT verification of EVM votes and said every leader of the opposition grouping has committed the sin of creating doubts in the minds of people about Electronic Voting Machine and heir dreams have been shattered. They did not let people exercise their right to vote for decades. Booth capturing was very common. They did not even let the people step out to vote. Now when the poor and honest voters have the strength of EVM, they are trying all they can to get rid of the EVM. Today, the Supreme Court has given a strong verdict saying that the old system of ballot paper voting will not come back, he said. He said opposition parties should apologise to the people for creating doubts about the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Today, the whole world praises India for its democracy, for its election process, and its use of technology in the election process and these people for their own self-interest were defaming the EVMs. These people have continuously tried to betray democracy, he said. PM Modi said the verdict of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is to make India strong economically and people of Bihar have an important role to play. Today, there are two main streams in politics. One stream is BJP-led NDA which wants to strengthen the people of India. On the other side is the INDI alliance which wants to fill their own pockets by seizing the property of the people, he said. Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister addressed a public rally in Bihar's Munger in which he attacked the opposition coalition accusing it of appeasement. There is an NDA model on one side and there is an INDI Alliance model on the other. INDI alliance model is appeasement (tushtikaran) and NDA's model is satisfaction (santushtikaran). We have to ensure that no one is left behind. We gave toilets, gas, electricity connections, and water facilities to our mothers and sisters. We gave free ration and free medical treatment, PM Modi said in Munger. We never asked anyone about the religion or caste of the beneficiaries...anyone who is eligible will get the benefits. This is true secularism and true social justice, he added. The Prime Minister said that the Congress party has set its eyes on the wealth of people and wants to conduct an x-ray, adding that it will seize more than half of the properties inherited by the people. The INDI alliance is using all its might for appeasement. The 'Shehzada' of Congress has said something which will bring a problem for everyone. He has said that a survey would be conducted for every family. The families have small properties and savings, women have some jewellery. The 'Stree Dhan' is considered sacred. Congress, which looted the country with corruption, has now set its eyes on your properties, PM Modi said. Congress wants to impose an inheritance tax. They say they will conduct an x-ray of every family. Today, you are able to pass on your properties to your children. But, Congress is planning... the guru of Shehzada (veiled jibe at Sam Pitroda) has said that they will seize more than half of your property. Now, two out of four-room houses, five acres out of 10-acre land, you will have to give to the government. The INDI alliance has come up with this dangerous plan, he added. The Prime Minister also addressed a public meeting in West Bengal's Malda today, where he attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress and its ally Congress. He said the ruling TMC and the Congress, which are partners in the INDIA bloc but are contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha separately in the state, are competing with each other in their 'appeasement' politics and attempts to woo a 'certain' community. The Congress wants to grab your properties and the TMC hasn't spoken a single word against it. They are competing with each other for appeasement and attempts to win over a certain community or vote bank. While the TMC government has worked to grant permanent residency to infiltrators from Bangladesh, the Congress is talking about redistributing your assets among a certain vote bank, PM Modi added. The only glue that holds the TMC and the Congress together is appeasement. These parties can go to any lengths to advance their appeasement politics and reverse any decision taken in the national interest, he added. Amid a verbal assault from PM Modi over its alleged wealth survey and redistribution pitch, the Congress has clarified that neither did it make any promise in its manifesto nor did Rahul Gandhi make any such assurance to voters. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said his party was in favour of a comprehensive socio-economic caste census. Senior party colleague and Lok Sabha candidate, Shashi Tharoor, too, waded into the matter, saying there was no mention of wealth redistribution in the Congress manifesto, adding that it was a desperate attempt by the BJP to divert public attention from the burning bread-and-butter issues affecting the people. Nowhere does it (manifesto) talk about wealth redistribution. Nowhere does it say anything about taking anybody's gold and snatching the mangalsutra of women. These are preposterous claims by the BJP and show their desperation. They know that they are losing these elections and will fling muck at us as much as they can, Tharoor said. PM Modi wrapped up the day's electioneering with a mega roadshow in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly. The day witnessed the voting in 88 constituencies across 13 states/UTs in the second phase today. According to the Election Commission, the overall turnout was registered at around 60.9 per cent. The voting was held in 13 seats in Rajasthan, 20 in Kerala, eight in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, five each in Assam and Bihar, six in Madhya Pradesh, three each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, and one each in Tripura, Manipur, and Jammu & Kashmir. The first phase of voting in 102 constituencies across 21 states/UTs were held on April 19. The third phase of the seven-phase parliamentary elections will be held on May 7 and the final phase will be on June 1. The results will be announced on June 4. (ANI)

It is likely to go upwards when reports from all polling stations are obtained, the EC said, adding voters reaching polling stations till the end of polling hour are allowed to cast their vote. Election Commission data showed the highest voting percentage was recorded in Tripura which registered 79.46 per cent polling, followed by Manipur at 77.32 while the turnout was in Uttar Pradesh at 54.85 per cent and Bihar 55.08 per cent. The unparalleled support for NDA is going to disappoint the Opposition even more. Voters want NDA's good governance. Youth and women voters are powering the strong NDA support.'' In Kerala, the turnout was 65.91 per cent. The election process, held amid tight security arrangements, was primarily incident free except for instances of bogus voting and breakdowns of electronic voting machines (EVMs) being reported in some booths of the state. Such incidents resulted in delaying the polling process in the affected booths. One person each reportedly died at Palakkad, Alappuzha and Malappuram after casting their vote and a polling agent died after collapsing at a booth in Kozhikode. Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency recorded a turnout of 79.46 per cent. Election officials said there were some complaints from a few booths but those were ''promptly addressed''. A jawan of the Madhya Pradesh Special Armed Force deployed on poll duty allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at a government school where he was stationed in Gariaband district under the Mahasamund seat in Chhattisgarh, where a voter turnout of 73.62 per cent was recorded. A polling booth at Sivni village in Balod district (Kanker seat) was decorated like a wedding 'mandap', with a display of rituals of traditional weddings. Several brides and grooms, dressed in their wedding finery, cast their votes at several polling booths. The EC said people from 46 villages in Bastar and Kanker seats cast their votes in a polling booth set up in their own village for the first time in a Lok Sabha election. In neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, there was a turnout of 57.88 per cent. An estimated 71.11 per cent of the 77,26,668 voters exercised their franchise in the five parliamentary constituencies of Assam that went to polls in this phase. There were reports of intimidation by suspected militants, altercation between Congress workers and NPF supporters and damage of EVM at a polling station in the Tangkhul Naga-dominated hill district. At KK Leishi Phanit polling station in Ukhrul, irate voters destroyed an EVM and other items after alleged disturbances by armed miscreants. The overall voting percentage in Karnataka was 68.30. A case was booked against BJP MP and Bangalore South Candidate Tejasvi Surya for allegedly posting a video on a social media platform and soliciting votes on the grounds of religion, the Election Commission said. Another BJP leader CT Ravi was booked for allegedly promoting hatred and enmity between citizens through his social media post. Various restaurants in Bangalore were offering free dosas, laddu, coffee and other food items at discounted rates to customers who cast their vote. A private hospital assisted 41 inpatients cast their vote with the help of city civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Green corridors were created for the ambulances across constituencies to ensure easy, hassle-free voting. Some EVMs were destroyed at a polling station in Indiganatha village in Chamarajanagara district of Karnataka during a clash between two groups of people over whether to vote or not. Officials said an FIR is being filed the Election Commission will take a call after getting a detailed report. A voter turnout of 57.83 per cent was recorded in eight constituencies in Maharashtra, while in Rajasthan, the turnout was 64.07 per cent. In Bihar, the turnout was 55.08 per cent, 71.84 per cent in in West Bengal and 71.91 per cent in Jammu and Kashmir. The Lok Sabha polls are the first major electoral battle in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into Union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh -- on August 5, 2019. The Election Commission registered nearly 300 complaints in West Bengal, mostly related to EVM malfunctioning. After Friday's phase, polling is over in Kerala, Rajasthan and Tripura.
