Kharge: We convinced Rahul Gandhi to run from Raebareli, a constituency his family has long represented

Kharge: We convinced Rahul Gandhi to run from Raebareli, a constituency his family has long represented Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said Rahul Gandhi was persuaded to contest Lok Sabha polls from Raebareli as several members of his family had represented the seat in the past. Gandhi filed his papers from Raebareli barely an hour before nominations closed for the Lok Sabha seat on Friday. It has been held by his mother Sonia Gandhi for the past two decades. Gandhi is contesting from Kerala's Wayanad as well, from where he is sitting MP. ''Our leader Sonia Gandhi has been elected to the Rajya Sabha, so we requested Rahul Gandhi that Raebareli has been an old constituency which served as the seat of Rajiv Gandhi, Firoz Gandhi and several of his family members,'' Kharge told reporters. ''He was at Shivamogga (for election campaign). So last night we held a discussion and finally we filed the nomination. I also went there. There is no question of fear,'' the Congress president added. Kharge's comments came after PM Modi took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi saying he decided to contest from Raebareli because he knew he would lose in Wayanad. When asked about Modi's statement over Gandhi's nomination from Raebareli, Kharge said that such a statement does not suit a prime minister. ''By making such cheap statements he reduces the dignity of a prime minister. Even Indira Gandhi contested from another seat like Chikmagalur and Medak...Ask him (Modi) why he went there (Varanasi) after leaving Gandhinagar,'' Kharge added. On Modi's accusation that people of Pakistan want to make Rahul Gandhi the prime minister, Kharge said it does not happen like this. ''It is our country, where our people will cast their vote. We did not fly to Pakistan for a hug without an invitation. He (Modi) does such a thing and then accuses Congress of taking help from Pakistan. Congress has given leaders who have sacrificed their lives for the unity of the country,'' he said. Despite this, Modi asks what the Congress has done for the country, Kharge said. ''I give them (BJP) an account of what the Congress did but he refuses to take it,'' Kharge added. Queried about the Congress claiming the BJP would change the Constitution after coming to power, Kharge said such claims were being made from open platforms by BJP and RSS leaders. ''We are not the ones who are saying we will change the Constitution. Their Member of Parliament Anant Kumar Hegde said give us two-third majority and we will change the Constitution. Mohan Bhagwat also said the same, even after the 2019 election. Should we trust these leaders,'' Kharge asked. The BJP has destroyed autonomous bodies formed under the Constitution, adding that the Congress was fighting to save democracy and the Constitution. He also expressed surprise over Modi's interpretation of Congress' manifesto as having an imprint of Muslim League. ''How can a Congress manifesto be a Muslim League manifesto? Our manifesto talks about five 'nyay','' he said. Addressing a public meeting in Ahmedabad later, Kharge said Modi was the chieftain of liars since he had not fulfilled promises like giving Rs 15 lakh in the accounts of the people, and doubling farmers' income. ''We are only saying what you yourself promised, we did not add a word. He talked about bringing a bullet train in two years. Have you taken a ride on the bullet train coming up at a cost of Rs 1 lakh crore? It is meant for the rich and not the poor because of the high fares,'' Kharge claimed. He also said the BJP government got MPs from the opposition thrown out when they talk about issues of the poor, like inflation and unemployment. ''The BJP tries to suppress our voice. Remember, we will not bow even when we have to sacrifice our lives. We are fighting for values which are for the good of the country,'' he asserted.

He ran away to Varanasi..., Mallikarjun Kharge on PM Modi's 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' remarks on Rahul Gandhi

He ran away to Varanasi..., Mallikarjun Kharge on PM Modi's 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' remarks on Rahul Gandhi Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' remarks on Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday claimed that PM Modi himself ran away to Varanasi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency on Friday. He (PM Modi) himself has run away to Varanasi, ask him, Kharge asked. After a lot of speculation, Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers from Raebareli on Friday.RaeBareli is considered a traditional stronghold of the Gandhi family. There was anticipation earlier that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from either Amethi or Raebareli, two seats in Uttar Pradesh which are prestige battles for the party. Earlier, PM Modi attacked Rahul Gandhi mockingly 'Daro Mat Bhago Mat' after he decided to contest from Raebareli. Addressing a rally in the Purba Bardhaman district on Friday, PM Modi said, There's no need for an opinion poll or exit poll...I said this much earlier. I predicted on the floor of Parliament two months ago that their (Congress') biggest leader (Sonia Gandhi) would stand down from contesting these elections. And just as I had foreseen, she (resigned as the Raebareli MP and) took a seat in the Rajya Sabha from Jaipur. I also told you earlier that the Shehzada would start looking for another safe seat for himself, fearing defeat in Wayanad. He was so afraid after losing Amethi in 2019 that he bolted all the way down South, to Wayanad. Now, he has escaped to Raebareli. These people often go around telling people, 'Daro maat' (don't be afraid). It's now my turn to say the same to them--'Arey daro maat, bhaago maat' (don't be afraid! don't flee!), he added. Meanwhile, Varanasi is the stronghold of the Prime Minister who won the seat twice in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. BJP has again fielded PM Modi from Varanasi and Congress has fielded Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai. This will be the most anticipated contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Narendra Modi won the constituency in both the 2014 and 2019 general polls with a resounding majority. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi won the seat with over 674,664 votes and commanded a vote share of 63.6 per cent. Earlier in 2014, PM Modi fought on two Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat's Vadodara and the second was Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. PM Modi won the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat by securing 845,464 votes with 72.8 per cent. Congress candidate Madhusudan Mistry secured 275,336 votes with 23.7 per cent. The Varanasi seat comprises five Assembly segments including Rohaniya, Varanasi North, Varanasi South, Varanasi Cantt, Sevapuri. The voting for the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency will be held in the seventh phase of the elections on June 1. The counting of the votes will be held on June 4. (ANI)

India Emerges as a Global Tourism Powerhouse, Set to Join Top 10 Markets: Airbnb CBO

India Emerges as a Global Tourism Powerhouse, Set to Join Top 10 Markets: Airbnb CBO India is one of the ''fastest-growing markets'' for online accommodation hosting platform Airbnb and the country has the potential to be among its top 10 global markets in the coming years, according to its Chief Business Officer Dave Stephenson. The company is investing in India to tap the opportunity of a rapid rise in tourists travelling to foreign destinations as well as domestic places that are rapidly growing post-pandemic and where 90 per cent of its first-time bookers are Gen Zs. ''It (India) is one of our growth markets and we see a huge opportunity for growth in India in the future. In India, nights booked grew by almost 30 per cent YoY (Year-on-Year) in 2023 compared to 2022, which is a positive sign,'' Stephenson told PTI. For Airbnb, India is going to be ''a large travel market'', where it has seen a ''strong desire'' among the ''Indian travellers to venture overseas as well as explore domestic destinations, especially those off the beaten path'', he said. Though, Stephenson did not any specific growth numbers but said India is a ''focus area'' and ''is one of our fastest-growing countries''. When asked as whether India figures among Airbnb's top 10 markets globally, Stephenson replied in negative. Further he said, ''It should be one of the top 10 markets. It is getting to be a large travel market and we definitely think it can be. That would be the goal.'' Airbnb is investing specifically in India, where a number of tourists travelling to foreign destinations as well as domestic places are on the rise post-pandemic and is supporting them to stay in its range of ''inexpensive homes all the way to luxe homes''. It has witnessed a whopping 75 per cent jump in international group travel bookings from India, where families/friends are going abroad for vacations. It has added features like the collaborative wishlist, where it is helping these groups find a perfect place. ''Indians are inspired by Cricket and Bollywood, and they want to explore the world. If they stay domestically, they are going to places like Goa and enjoying. But also, if they have the opportunity to travel abroad, they love to go to Italy and places that they're inspired by from the movies,'' he said. Currently, 90 per cent of its first-time bookers are Gen Zs. Moreover, Airbnb is supporting the inbound flow of international travellers coming to India. Airbnb is ''working closely with the government in their vision to make India one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world'', Stephenson said. It has partnered with the Ministry of Tourism and curated a dedicated microsite which spotlights heritage stays across India. It has also partnered with state governments of Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Maharashtra, among others, to promote lesser-known destinations and conduct capacity-building workshops, he said. It is supporting individual homeowners to share their home, or a second home, enabling them to earn money out of their properties. ''We have supported over 85,000 jobs and contributed over USD 920 million dollars to the GDP of India just through our Airbnb activities,'' he said, adding, ''When people stay in Airbnb, they support the economy, the economies of the host and community they stay in versus staying in a hotel where the profits can go off to some corporation.'' Airbnb on Wednesday unveiled Icons, a new category of extraordinary experiences hosted by the greatest names in music, film, television, art, sports, and more. Among 11 global such Icons, it has selected the home of Chennai-based home of Bollywood actor Janhvi Kapoor, where she had spent her childhood, for a stay. 'Live like Bollywood star Janhvi Kapoor' in India, offers stay in the home, which was owned by late actor Sri Devi, it said. This summer international destinations such as Milan (Italy), Amalfi (Italy), Tokyo (Japan), Rome (Italy) and Frankfurt (Germany) are trending in Airbnb search lists. According to Airbnb, Bollywood films and social media influencers have continued to contribute towards the growing popularity of Europe and Japan. Besides, Goa, Varkala in Kerala, Varanasi, Delhi and Kochi are among such domestic destinations, it added.
