Danam holds padayatra in Khairatabad

Hyderabad: Congress Secunderabad candidate Danam Nagender conducted a padayatra in Nandinagar in the Khairatabad Assembly segment on Saturday in which local party leaders and workers and people in large numbers took part. Addressing street corner meetings, Nagender said that the people of Hyderabad had elected him legislator six times so far because he had always remained accessible to the people and tried to resolve all the issues that they brought to his notice. He slammed his rival G. Kishan Reddy, TS BJP president and Union minister, accusing him of being inaccessible to the people after getting elected as Secunderabad MP five years ago. Nagender said Kishan Reddy enjoyed power and position but the people who voted for him faced several hardships during the floods and the Covid pandemic and related lockdown. When people were suffering, Kishan Reddy was unavailable. He was busy in Delhi but was least bothered about his people in Secunderabad who elected him. During the city floods in 2020, Kishan Reddy failed to bring a single rupee for flood relief from the Modi government despite being Union minister and Secunderabad MP, Nagender alleged.

No HC Nod for Underage Girl Keen on NEET

HYDERABAD: A two-judge panel of the Telangana High Court refused relief to a 16-year-old girl wanting to take the NEET medical entrance despite being underage. The panel of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J. Anil Kumar was hearing a petition filed by Rithika Monika, represented by her mother, who contended that her childs performances in Class 10 and Intermediate showed that she was an extraordinarily gifted student. The panel called upon senior advocate L. Ravichander as amicus to assist the court. He pointed out that the regulations indeed prescribed inhibition whereby a candidate was required to be 17 years old as of December 31 and that the present petition was in the nature of seeking a mandamus contrary to the statute. The panel earlier voiced sympathy for the candidate but was also aware that entertaining such a petition could open the floodgates of multiple claimants. The panel further recorded the judgmnts of different High Court, including Delhi and Chennai, cited by Pujitha, the counsel for the Medical Council of India, and dismissed the writ petition.

Lone Afghan woman diplomat in India steps down amid allegations of gold smuggling

NEW DELHI: Amid reports of being apprehended with 25 kg gold smuggled in from Dubai to Mumbai, the lone Afghan woman diplomat in India, Zakia Wardak, resigned from her position on Saturday. However, Wardak, who was Afghanistans Consul General in Mumbai, attributed her resignation to defamation and personal attacks. It is with great regret that I announce my decision to step down from my role at the consulate and Embassy of Afghanistan in Mumbai effective May 5th, said Wardak on Saturday. She went on to say that during the past one year, she had faced personal attacks aimed at her and her family. Meanwhile, according to reports, the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) apprehended the 58-year-old Wardak on April 25th after she disembarked from an Emirates flight from Dubai and along with her son-in-law crossed the green channel and was close to the exit. Wardak was reportedly taken for physical check when the gold bars were discovered concealed in her customised jacket, leggings, knee caps and waist belt. The gold was worth Rs 18.6 crore. She wasnt arrested as she has diplomatic immunity. Wardak said the personal attacks prevented her from carrying on her work effectively. It has demonstrated the challenges faced by women in Afghan society who strive to modernize and bring positive changes amidst ongoing propaganda campaigns. Wardak went on to say that the persistent and coordinated nature of the attacks aimed at defaming her surpassed a tolerable threshold. It had become increasingly clear that the public narrative is unfairly targeted the only female representative within this system, rather than focusing on constructive assistance and support, said Wardak. She further stated that though she wanted to serve her country and contribute to a positive change, it was taking a toll on her physical well being and ability to function normally. Therefore, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my current role. I extend my gratitude to the Indian government for their welcome and unwavering support during my tenure, which lasted three years, Wardak said.

Khan triumphs in historic third term as Mayor of London

Khan triumphs in historic third term as Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on Saturday registered a decisive victory to secure a record third term as Mayor of London, as the local election results from England and Wales continued to reflect a strong swing in favour of the Opposition Labour Party. The 53-year-old Pakistani-origin Labour candidate secured a massive 10,88,225 votes with a 43.8 per cent vote share, well ahead of the Conservative candidate Susan Halls 8,11,518 votes. Delhi-born businessman Tarun Ghulati, contesting as an independent candidate among a total 13 mayoral candidates, trailed far behind in most of the boroughs. Earlier, Khans own camp and the BBC had already called the election in favour of Khan as borough-wise results poured in for the UK capital to show that he was on course to beat his nearest Conservative Party rival, Susan Hall, with a strong voter swing in favour of Labour. Significantly, the UK capitals Muslim population did not seem to have punished the Labour mayor for his partys failure to strongly condemn Israel over the Gaza conflict in the same way as other parts of the country had. Some of Khans controversial policies, such as the high costs on drivers of vehicles falling under the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) tariff bracket as part of his anti-pollution drive for London, also did not result in a major dent in his overall popularity. Sadiq Khan was absolutely the right candidate. He has got two terms of delivery behind him and I am confident that he has got another term of delivery in front of him, said Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer just before the results were declared. The role of London mayor represents the 8.9 million people living across the capital and has a budget of GBP 20.4 billion. His office is responsible for Transport for London (TfL) and has some control over roads, policing and housing in the city. Londoners also went to the polls on Thursday to vote for one of 14 local representatives on the London Assembly and 11 London-wide Assembly members who hold the Mayor of London accountable. The Labour Party continued its winning streak in most of the local elections, seen as reflective of the electorates mood ahead of a general election expected later this year. Popular Labour incumbent Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham was re-elected with 63 per cent of the vote, who committed to get right back to work to see through his transport reforms and called for more powers over welfare and housing. I am ready to fight harder than I have ever fought for anything before, for a Greater Manchester where people can live free from the fear of debt, hunger and eviction, and where everyone is set up to benefit from the growing success of our city region today, said Burnham in his victory speech. Earlier, the party won the Liverpool City Region and South Yorkshire mayoral races, the North East mayoralty, as well as the brand-new mayoralty of East Midlands. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who was handed a glimmer of hope on Friday with Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen retaining the seat for the Conservatives, will be hoping Birminghams Tory Mayor Andy Street is able to win a contest that has been on a knife-edge between the Conservatives and Labour with double checks underway as the result remained too close to call. However, any immediate manoeuvres by the Tory rebels to try and challenge Sunaks leadership seems to have been averted for the moment as there isnt much appetite for another upheaval in the party ranks. An analysis of the local election results by BBCs polling expert Professor John Curtice suggests that Labour is now in a pole position to win the general election, with the local elections extrapolated to a national level giving the Opposition a comfortable lead.

TMC shares video accusing Suvendu of 'orchestrating' Sandeshkhali incidents, BJP calls it 'fake'

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday released a video via social media, alleging that the incidents in Sandheshkhali were a BJP conspiracy to malign West Bengal before the Lok Sabha polls. In the purported video, a man who identifies himself as the BJP mandal president in Sandeshkhali is heard saying that Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, is behind the whole conspiracy. The man in the video alleges that Adhikari directed him and other BJP leaders in the area to instigate three to four local women to make rape allegations against three TMC leaders, including Shahjahan Sheikh . In the video, the man claimed that Adhikari himself had planted guns at a house in Sandeshkhali, which was subsequently portrayed as a seizure by central agencies. Notably, the authenticity of the video posted by the TMC has not been verified. Sharing the video via X, the TMC wrote: From mass rape to arms seizure, every claim was bought and staged by none other than Suvendu Adhikari and accused the BJP of leaving o stone unturned to malign Bengal. And quoting the party's post, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote: The shocking Sandeshkhali sting shows how deep the rot is within the BJP. In their hatred for Bengal's progressive thought & culture, the Bangla-Birodhis orchestrated a conspiracy to defame our state on every possible level. Never before in the history of India has a ruling party in Delhi tried to malign an entire state and its people. The shocking Sandeshkhali sting shows how deep the rot is within the BJP. Never before in the history of India has a ruling https://t.co/50QUParP16 Mamata Banerjee (@MamataOfficial) May 4, 2024 The cat is out of the bag. The sinister plot of Modi-Shah, central agencies and their allies stands exposed, the TMC said, apparently referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Senior TMC leader Abhisekh Banerjee claimed on Saturday that the video vindicated the TMC's stand that the saffron party was behind the incidents. In the press conference, Banerjee, who is considered number two in the TMC, alleged that to create grounds for the imposition of Article 355 in Bengal, Adhikari orchestrated the entire incident in Sandeshkhali. Banerjee asserted that the honour of Bengali women were compromised by such allegations in Sandeshkhali, which he believes are aimed at maligning the state. I never thought the politics of Bengal would stoop so low to get votes. We have been saying from day one that a shameless attempt was made to malign Bengal ahead of the elections, he said. Shri @abhishekaitc vehemently criticised the Godi Media's spineless sensationalism, turning manufactured narratives into a spectacle to tarnish Bengal's image. He condemned the Judiciary for its biased favoritism towards the BJP! #SandeshkhaliExposed pic.twitter.com/h2AGmZTetJ All India Trinamool Congress (@AITCofficial) May 4, 2024 He demanded that the BJP's top leadership apologise for maligning Bengal about Sandeshkhali within 48 hours. The TMC national general secretary also wondered what Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had mentioned Sandeshkhali incidents several times during his election rallies, will say now. In his election rallies across the state, PM Modi has continued to criticise the TMC over what he claimed to be apathy towards the victims in Sandeshkhali, where allegations of sexual abuse surfaced against the party's leaders, including Shahjahan Sheikh. Responding to the TMC's allegations, Adhikari said, It is a fake and doctored video. It seems that the TMC sensed defeat (in the election) and is trying to divert attention. There have been hundreds of complaints by women of Sandeshkhali. BJP spokesman Shankudeb Panda said the TMC was unable to combat the swelling public anger over the Sandeskhlai incident. The TMC is insulting women in Sandeshkhali and Bengal. Its leaders are uploading such a doctored video as it found no other way to combat the charges, he said. (With additional inputs for PTI)

Punjab CM Mann alleges BJP imprisoned Kejriwal to hinder his LS poll campaign

Punjab CM Mann alleges BJP imprisoned Kejriwal to hinder his LS poll campaign Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said the ruling BJP was afraid of his Aam Aadmi Party colleague and Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail in connection with a excise policy linked case. The BJP has jailed him in a completely false case to stop him from campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls, said Mann, who held a road show for his party's Bharuch candidate Chaitar Vasava. ''They put him in jail just before the elections because they wanted to stop Arvind Kejriwal from campaigning. BJP and Narendra Modi are scared of AAP and Arvind Kejriwal. But they don't know that Arvind Kejriwal is not just a person, he is an idea,'' Mann claimed. ''They can never stop a thought. They can only keep the person in jail. Vasava was similarly jailed by the BJP because he fights for the people and their rights. But he is out now and fighting for what is right,'' he said. Vasava was jailed in a rioting case in November last year and later released on bail by the High Court. The BJP is so scared that it got Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren arrested, froze the bank accounts of opposition parties and is using the governors of non-BJP ruled states to do their dirty work, Mann alleged. ''The Punjab governor creates obstacles in the works of the state government. The governor of Tamil Nadu does the same. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee is also facing difficulties. Because the BJP is a dictatorial party, they want to finish the Constitution of Babasaheb Ambedkar. They want to finish off our democracy,'' Mann asserted. ''In Surat, the Congress candidate withdrew his nomination. They (BJP) bought off independent candidates and won unopposed. Constitutionally there should have been an election because even in the absence of other candidates there is NOTA (none of the above) option to a voter,'' he opined. The first two phases of the Lok Sabha polls has given a shock to the BJP, which is no longer using the slogan 'abki baar 400 paar', the Punjab CM claimed. The INDIA bloc, of which the AAP and Congress are constituents, is winning both the phases easily, he added.

IPL 2024: LSG Might Have To Play The Rest Of The Event Without Mayank Yadav, Says Coach Justin Langer

Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari: Lucknow Super Giants are reconciled to probably playing the rest of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 without young tearaway pacer Mayank Yadav. Even if there is a possibility of getting him back, it would be a huge test for the pacer, said LSG head coach Justin Langer ahead of their upcoming clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. Yadav had returned for the match against Mumbai Indians at the same venue on April 30 but pulled after bowling 3.1 overs, returning to the dugout as his injury flared up again. Langer said there were no updates on Mayank Yadav on Saturday but felt his injury was the usual one that young fast bowlers have to suffer early in their careers. No updates. He had a scan. He has got a small tear in a similar area where the last one was. So, it is very unfortunate. We saw the impact he had made, said Langer in the pre-match press conference on Saturday. He came back into the game, but we can also see there's been a lot of discussion about fast bowlers, and he spoke to (Jasprit) Bumrah after the game and he reassured him that he's going to be a fast bowler, said the former Australia coach. Part of his journey as a young fast bowler, he's going to get injuries, and in my experience every young fast bowler, probably until they get to 24-26, are going to experience different injuries and also most unfortunate is he's got huge potential, he added. Langer dispelled the notion that Yadav had made a pre-mature return against Mumbai Indians, which led to his injury aggravating. He did his rehabilitation, (it) was excellent. He went into the game, had a couple of balls before the game, he was completely pain-free, so I was very sad for him and it's disappointing for LSG as well, said the LSG coach. He said even if there are chances of Mayank Yadav returning to the squad, it would be a big test for him. Already might have to play the rest of the tournament without him. You can fly him, hopefully for the playoffs but it will be a real test as well. It would probably be difficult for him to get up for the backend of the tournament, said Langer. LSG are currently placed third in the third position with 12 points from 10 matches and is in a tight contest with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals in the race for the playoff spots behind the top two -- Rajasthan Royals (16) and Kolkata Knight Riders (14).

BJP criticizes Rahul Gandhi's Rae Bareli nomination, citing 'beta bachao, beta badhao' concerns

BJP criticizes Rahul Gandhi's Rae Bareli nomination, citing 'beta bachao, beta badhao' concerns The BJP on Saturday took a swipe at the Congress over Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli, saying the opposition party seems to believe in ''beta bachao, beta badhao'' (save son, promote son). Speaking to reporters as five former Delhi Congress leaders, including Arvinder Singh Lovely, joined the BJP, the ruling party's national general secretary Vinod Tawde claimed that many Congress workers wanted Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to contest from Rae Bareli but her brother took the plunge instead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's slogan is 'beti bachao, beti padhao' (save daughter, educate daughter) but the Congress' slogan is ''beta bachao, beta badhao'', he said. Tawde said Gandhi had claimed that Kerala's Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, from where he is seeking re-election, is his family and he will not go anywhere else. ''But he has now gone back on his assertion and filed the nomination from Rae Bareli,'' the BJP leader said. How can the people of the country trust him when there is such a mismatch between his words and actions, Tawde asked. BJP leaders, including Modi, have mocked Gandhi for contesting from Rae Bareli and not Amethi, another Uttar Pradesh seat which he represented in the Lok Sabha for three terms before losing it in 2019. Former Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam alleged that the ''Rahul camp'' has long been conspiring to scuttle Priyanka Gandhi's political career and claimed that the party will split after the poll results are announced on June 4. Krishnam, who has been vocal about his support for Priyanka Gandhi, was expelled from the Congress following his incessant criticism of the party leadership over a host of issues, including its recent decision to turn down the invite for the Ram temple consecration ceremony. He has been full of praise for Modi's leadership.

India waits for details on arrests in Canada over Sikh separatist's murder

India waits for details on arrests in Canada over Sikh separatist's murder India will wait for Canadian police to share information on the three Indian men it has arrested and charged with the murder of a Sikh separatist leader last year, Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Saturday. Canadian police charged the three on Friday over the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and said they were probing whether the suspects had links to the Indian government. Jaishankar said he had seen news of the arrests and said the suspects apparently are Indians of some kind of gang background... we'll have to wait for the police to tell us. The trio, all Indian nationals, were arrested in the city of Edmonton in Alberta on Friday, police said. Nijjar, 45, was shot dead in June outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population. A few months later, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cited credible allegations of Indian government involvement, prompting a diplomatic crisis with New Delhi. Nijjar was a Canadian citizen campaigning for the creation of Khalistan, an independent Sikh homeland carved out of India. The presence of Sikh separatist groups in Canada has long frustrated New Delhi, which had labeled Nijjar a errorist. Canadian police said they had worked with U.S. law enforcement agencies, without giving additional details, and suggested more detentions might be coming.

A few people's selfish motives and aspirations grow a lot. This is the same Lovely who had advocated for an alliance with AAP. Today, he made an excuse because he had to go to the BJP. Lovely might have had some compulsions. But his character has come before everyone today, he said. Meanwhile, after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party today, former Congress Delhi Chief, Arvinder Singh said that he had resigned last Sunday from the post and till date no response has been received from party leaders. Sadiq Khan Wins Second Term as Mayor of London

Sadiq Khan Wins Second Term as Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, the Pakistani-origin Labour Party candidate in the race to be re-elected London Mayor for a third term, looked set on Saturday to register a decisive victory, as the local election results from England and Wales continued to reflect a strong swing in favour of the Opposition party. The 53-year-olds own camp and the BBC have decided to call the election in favour of Khan as borough-wise results poured in for the UK capital to show that he was on course to beat his nearest Conservative Party rival, Susan Hall, with a strong voter swing in favour of Labour. Delhi-born businessman Tarun Ghulati, contesting as an Independent candidate, is trailing far behind in most of the boroughs where counting has been completed. ''Sadiq Khan was absolutely the right candidate. He has got two terms of delivery behind him and I am confident that he has got another term of delivery in front of him, said Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. The role of London Mayor represents the 8.9 million people living across the capital and has a budget of GBP 20.4 billion and is responsible for Transport for London (TfL) and has some control over roads, policing and housing in the city. Londoners also went to the polls on Thursday to vote for one of 14 local representatives on the London Assembly and 11 London wide Assembly members who hold the Mayor of London accountable. The Labour Party continued its winning streak in most of the local elections, seen as reflective of the electorates mood ahead of a general election expected later this year. The party won the Liverpool City Region and South Yorkshire mayoral races, the North East mayoralty, as well as the brand-new mayoralty of East Midlands. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who was handed a glimmer of hope on Friday with Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen retaining the seat for the Conservatives, will be hoping Birminghams Tory Mayor Andy Street is able to win a contest that has been on a knife-edge between the Conservatives and Labour. However, any immediate manoeuvres by the Tory rebels to try and challenge Sunaks leadership seems to have been averted for the moment as there isnt much appetite for another upheaval in the party ranks. An analysis of the local election results by BBCs polling expert Professor John Curtice suggests that Labour is now in pole position to win the general election, with the local elections extrapolated to a national level giving the Opposition a comfortable lead.

Mayank Yadav Ruled Out of IPL 2023: Coach Justin Langer

Mayank Yadav Ruled Out of IPL 2023: Coach Justin Langer Pace sensation Mayank Yadav has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League after sustaining a lower abdominal tear, Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer confirmed on Saturday. That the 21-year-old Delhi man would be out of this IPL with a grade 1 tear (side strain) was first reported by PTI on May 1 along with the news of his induction into BCCI's pace bowling contract list. Asked about Mayank's fitness status, Langer said, No, we'll be praying that he can play, hopefully, in the play-offs, but I am a realist as well. It'll probably be difficult for him to get up for the back-end of the tournament.'' Mayank, who took everyone by surprise with his 155 click thunderbolts played four IPL matches, took seven wickets. But more importantly, in two of those games he broke down without completing his quota of overs. The pacer got injured for the first time against Gujarat Titans and he left the field with a side strain after bowling one over. He underwent a four-week rehabilitation and came back against Mumbai Indians but broke down again after sending down 3.1 overs leading to scathing criticism from Langer's one-time teammate Brett Lee. Langer informed the media that Mayank sustained a tear at the same area where he was injured earlier. ''He's (Mayank) had a scan. He's got a small tear in a similar area to where his last one (injury) was. So, it's very unfortunate. We saw the impact he had when he came back into the game, the former Australia opener and head coach said. Langer said even the great Jasprit Bumrah has spoken about how fast bowlers will have to cope with injuries. There will always be a lot of discussion about fast bowlers, and I know he spoke to [Jasprit] Bumrah after the game and he reassured him that if he's going to be a fast bowler, a part of his journey as a young fast bowler, he's going to get injuries. So, in my experience, every young fast bowler, probably until they get to 25 or 26, is going to experience different injuries. It's the most unfortunate. He's got huge potential, he said. While Lee had questioned LSGs handling of Mayank's injury, the head coach sounded different. His rehabilitation was excellent. He went into the game [against MI], had a couple of bowls before the game. He was completely pain free. So, it's very sad for him and it's disappointing for LSG as well that he might not play (the rest of the tournament).

Ex-Congress Leaders in Delhi, Including Arvinder Singh Lovely, Switch to BJP

Ex-Congress Leaders in Delhi, Including Arvinder Singh Lovely, Switch to BJP Former Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely joined the BJP on Saturday along with a few other leaders, including former MLAs Raj Kumar Chauhan, Neeraj Basoya and Naseeb Singh. All the former Congress leaders, who have publicly slammed the opposition party's alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi for the Lok Sabha polls, joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, party general secretary Vinod Tawde and its Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni. Lovely hailed the BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for giving him and his colleagues the opportunity to join the party when they felt lost. He asserted that Modi is set to retain power in the Lok Sabha polls and expressed confidence that the BJP's flag will fly high in Delhi as well. The seven parliamentary seats in the national capital will go to polls on May 25 in the sixth round of the seven-phase elections, voting for which began on April 19. Votes will be counted on June 4. A four-term former MLA like Chauhan, Lovely had recently quit as Delhi Congress president protesting the party's alliance with the AAP. All these Congress leaders had echoed similar views. Amit Malik, a former youth Congress leader, also joined the BJP. It is believed that these leaders were also upset with their party's choice of candidates, including Kanhaiya Kumar and Udit Raj, for the Lok Sabha polls here. This will be the second innings of Lovely in the BJP after he left it to rejoin the Congress in 2018 following a brief stay in the saffron party. Puri praised these leaders and said the BJP will utilise their services effectively. Lovely said the people of Delhi want to rid the city of the AAP government headed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail in the excise scam case. Chauhan said the AAP government has pushed the city backwards after all the ''development'' seen earlier, a reference to the Congress government headed by Sheila Dikshit. Both he and Lovely were ministers in her government. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said no one can stand with those who have ''looted'' the city as he welcomed them to his party. INDIA bloc parties AAP and Congress are fighting the polls in Delhi under a seat-sharing arrangement. While the AAP has fielded candidates from four seats, the Congress is contesting the elections from three.

At Bihar rally, Modi slams Lalu over Godhra, blasts oppn parties for quotas

At Bihar rally, Modi slams Lalu over Godhra, blasts oppn parties for quotas Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday charged RJD president Lalu Prasad, the BJPs principal opponent in Bihar, with having tried to ''shield'' those guilty in two-decade-old Godhra train burning incident and put blame on kar sevaks. Addressing an election rally at Darbhanga, Modi, who was then the chief minister of Gujarat where riots had erupted after the incident, also alleged that the RJD supremo had acted in connivance with the Congress, which headed the UPA, in power at the Centre. This is probably the first time Modi raised the Godhra issue during the ongoing elections. Without mentioning Prasad by name, Modi described the RJD supremo, who was the Railway minister in the first UPA government, as one serving sentences, out on bail (in fodder scam cases)''. He had tried to shield those who were responsible for the Godhra train burning incident in which more than 60 kar sevaks were burnt alive. Was it not the reign of Sonia (Gandhi) madam, remarked PM, referring to the former Congress president and UPA chairperson. Modi recalled that the Banerjee Commission, although headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court, was often called ben raazi (the sister is willing), and ''under pressure'' from Prasad it submitted a ''bogus'' report that ''tried to exonerate those who were guilty and put the blame on kar sevaks themselves''. ''But the court consigned the report to the dustbin. Those who were guilty got punished, some of them even getting death sentences,'' said the prime minister. Modi alleged that all constituents of the opposition bloc INDIA had a propensity towards appeasement and lambasted the RJD for ''counting Muslims among armed forces''. The remark seemed an oblique reference to Tejashwi Yadav, the RJD presidents son and heir apparent who has spoken of all the three armed forces being headed by Hindus while slamming the ruling BJP at the Centre for repeatedly claiming that the faith of the majority community was in danger. In his speech which lasted for more than 30 minutes, Modi also took potshots at Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, mentioning neither by name but observing ''there is a 'shehzada' (crown prince) in Delhi. Likewise there is a 'shehzada' in Patna. Both have had a dismal track record''. ''Their tendency for appeasement makes them behave in this fashion. Earlier, they had insulted the armed forces by raising questions on surgical strikes. We never think in terms of Hindus and Muslims while talking about our armed forces and our martyrs,'' the prime minister said. Modi also alleged that in 2007, when Prasad was the railway minister, ''he had advocated reservations for Muslims'' and that the RJD supremo and Congress ''want to divert quotas for SCs, STs and OBCs, who feel disillusionment towards them''. ''These parties are going against Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and even Jawaharlal Nehru, both of whom were opposed to reservations along religious lines but let me assure you, as long as Modi is alive, nobody can snatch away reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs,'' said the PM at the rally here. Slamming the INDIA bloc for ''spreading lies that I want to change the Constitution, which I worship'', Modi said, ''I have been challenging them for 12 days to give in writing that they will not snatch away quotas meant for deprived people and provide these along religious lines. They are yet to do so''. The prime minister also noted that the Mithila region, named after an ancient kingdom of which Darbhanga was the capital, was the land of Goddess Sita, and therefore, had special sentiments for Ram temple at Ayodhya. ''India was first attacked on its western boundary about 1,000 years ago. It led to a millennium of enslavement. When we freed Ayodhya after a nearly-500-year-long fight, I had said that for the next 1,000 years, India will script a new history,'' said Modi who also asserted that the country had begun to get its rightful place in the comity of nations. ''When bad days fell on the nation, Bihar was among the worst sufferers. We must not allow the state to return to the era of the lantern'', said Modi, referring to the RJDs poll symbol. He also made an indirect reference to the land-for-jobs scam under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate in which Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav have been named, saying the people of Bihar have been made to do away with their land to get jobs. The people of Bihar must also not forgive constituents of the INDIA bloc, which ruled Delhi and Maharashtra when mass exodus of labourers took place during the COVID pandemic, asserted the prime minister. He also lauded ally Nitish Kumar, the Bihar chief minister who heads the JD(U), for his governance track record. Modi added, We had been occupying the 11th spot among economies of the world. Now we are the fifth largest economy. Referring to the inheritance tax controversy, the prime minister alleged that the Congress wants to bring in a law by which one will be deprived of 55 per cent of whatever one's parents have earned and saved. They wish to place a fatwa on one's inheritance. In keeping with his penchant for connecting with locals wherever he goes, the prime minister addressed the rally wearing the traditional headgear Mithila paag, on which the lotus, the BJPs poll symbol, was printed. He also took note of an enthusiastic supporter who brought a cut-out of the PM to the venue. ''I appreciate that you have made Modi dance. Now you please hand it over to the SPG people'', said the PM.

Afghan Ambassador to India Resigns Amidst Gold Smuggling Allegations

Afghan Ambassador to India Resigns Amidst Gold Smuggling Allegations Zakia Wardak, the senior-most Afghan diplomat in India, has resigned from her position after reports emerged that she was caught at Mumbai airport last month for allegedly trying to smuggle 25 kg of gold worth Rs 18.6 crore from Dubai. Wardak had taken charge as the acting ambassador of Afghanistan to New Delhi since late last year after working as the Afghan Consul General in Mumbai for over two years. In a statement posted on 'X', the Afghan diplomat said she decided to resign in view of numerous personal attacks on her that severely impacted her ability to effectively operate. She, however, did not mention the reports of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seizing 25 kg of gold from her at the Mumbai airport on April 25. It is learnt that the DRI did not arrest Wardak as enjoyed diplomatic immunity. ''It is with great regret that I announce my decision to step away from my role at the consulate and embassy of Afghanistan in India, effective May 5,'' she said. ''Over the past year, I have encountered numerous personal attacks and defamation not only directed towards me but also towards my close family and extended relatives,'' she said. Wardak took charge of the Afghan embassy in New Delhi last November after the mission helmed by then ambassador Farid Mamundzay announced its closure. Mamundzay had moved to the UK. There was no comment by Indian officials on Wardak's resignation. ''These attacks, which appear to be organised, have severely impacted my ability to effectively operate in my role and have demonstrated the challenges faced by women in Afghan society who strive to modernise and bring positive change amidst ongoing propaganda campaigns,'' Wardak said in her statement. She said the ''persistent and coordinated'' attacks have surpassed a ''tolerable threshold''. ''While attacks on me and my character were not altogether surprising, as being in public life is something I had prepared myself for, I was unprepared for the toll it took on those close to me. It is not fair to subject them to such unwarranted and horribly unfair experiences,'' she said. ''The persistent and coordinated nature of these attacks, aimed at defaming my character and undermining my efforts, have surpassed a tolerable threshold,'' Wardak added. ''It has become increasingly clear that the public narrative is unfairly targeting the only female representative within this system, rather than focusing on constructive assistance and support,'' she said. ''While it is my passion to serve my country and contribute to positive change, I find it necessary to prioritize my well-being and ability to function in a normal capacity. Therefore, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my current role.'' The Afghan diplomat also thanked India for its ''unwavering support'' during her tenure in the country. ''It has been a great privilege working alongside the people of India for the past three years. I am grateful for the collaborative efforts and shared vision for progress between nations,'' she said.

AAP's Raghav Chadha, Atishi Marlena, and Saurabh Bharadwaj Submit Nominations for Delhi Elections

AAP's Raghav Chadha, Atishi Marlena, and Saurabh Bharadwaj Submit Nominations for Delhi Elections AAP candidates from East Delhi and West Delhi Lok Sabha seats filed their nomination papers amid fanfare and in the presence of senior party leaders on Saturday. The three AAP candidates - Kuldeep Kumar (East Delhi), Somnath Bharti (New Delhi) and Mahabal Mishra (West Delhi) - took out roadshows along with senior AAP leaders and volunteers of the party before going for filing nominations. Bharti in a post on X at 4.48 PM wrote he was waiting for two hours for his turn to file nomination papers along with other candidates at the office of New Delhi Parliamentary constituency returning officer. He also claimed ''there is a hot discussion going on that the BJP fearing massive defeat, to the extent of losing deposits, at New Delhi Loksabha and East Delhi Loksabha seats is contemplating changing their candidates to Sri Hardeep Singh Puri Ji (@HardeepSPuri) and Sri Arvinder Lovely Ji (@ArvinderLovely) respectively. Even if they change candidates, people won't change their decision and will vote BJP out of power in 2024.'' Puri, Union minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, immediately dismissed Bharti's claim as ''baseless and mischievous''. ''He is trying to mislead people. Bharati should get his mental faculties checked,'' Puri said in a statement. The AAP is contesting four of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi in alliance with the Congress. Party candidate from South Delhi Sahi Ram Pehalwan has already filed his nomination. Kumar, who hails from the Dalit community, sought blessings of his parents and jailed party leader Manish Sisodia's wife as well as offered tributes at Dr B R Ambedkar's statue before embarking on his nomination procession. In a post on X, Kumar said a youth from an ordinary family hardly dreams about entering politics but Arvind Kejriwal and Sisodia showed confidence in him and gave him a chance to become the voice of AAP. Party Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, Delhi minister Atishi and MLA Dilip Pandey among other leaders attended the well attended procession of Kumar. Atishi said people of Delhi have made up their mind to retaliate against Kejriwal's arrest through votes and the huge crowd gathered in support of Kumar shows he is going to be the next MP of East Delhi, a general constituency. Singh said Kejriwal has set a significant example by fielding a Dalit community member from the East Delhi seat. He claimed the BJP will lose all the seven Lok Sabha seats and the INDIA bloc will come to power at the Centre winning 300 seats across the country. The BJP's 'Abki Baar 400 Paar' slogan is hollow and it will not get more than 150 seats in the polls, he said. Party volunteers and supporters wearing blue and yellow 'pagris' (headgears) took part in Kumar's procession. The people wearing yellow and blue colours signifying Bhagat Singh and Ambedkar have come out to protest against dictatorship that has put Kejriwal behind the bars, Kumar said. Mahabal Mishra's nomination began after prayers at temples in Raghuveer Nagar. Apart from Sanjay Singh, Delhi minister Kailash Gahlot and Dilip Pandey, Delhi Congress's interim president Devender Yadav also accompanied Mishra in his nomination procession. In a seat sharing agreement, INDIA combine partners AAP and Congress are contesting four and three seats respectively in Delhi, giving a direct fight to the BJP. The nomination process will conclude on May 6. Voting in all the seven seats will be held on May 25.

Supreme Court Raises Concerns Over Indian Judicial Code Provisions Amid New Criminal Laws

New Delhi: Th e Supreme Court has raised serious questions about certain provisions of the Indian Judicial Code, just two months before its implementation. The court has urged the Central Government and the legislature to reconsider and make appropriate changes to Sections 85 and 86 of the Indian Judicial Code to prevent false allegations of harassment against women. In its decision, the bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra highlighted that Sections 85 and 86 of the Indian Judicial Code are similar to Section 498 (A) of the IPC. However, the court emphasized that the explanation provided in Section 86 needs reconsideration to curb the rising trend of false complaints. The court has requested the legislature to make necessary changes to these sections before the implementation of the Indian Judicial Code, 2023, which is scheduled to come into effect from July 1. Sections 85 and 86 of the Indian Judicial Code pertain to the punishment for subjecting a woman to cruelty and provide a detailed explanation of cruelty, including both mental and physical harm inflicted on the victim woman. The bench directed the registry to send copies of its decision to the Union Law Secretary and Home Secretary, who will present it to the Law and Justice Minister and the Home Minister along with their recommendations and comments. The court's concerns stem from the need to prevent misuse of the law, similar to the issues faced with Section 498A of the IPC, which deals with dowry harassment complaints. The bench mentioned that it had raised concerns about Section 498A of the IPC 14 years ago due to the exaggeration of incidents in dowry harassment complaints. The court's decision came while canceling a dowry harassment case filed by a woman against her husband. The court noted that the woman's allegations were vague and lacked specific examples of criminal conduct. The three new criminal laws, which are set to be implemented from July 1, were approved by the Parliament on December 21 last year and received President Draupadi Murmu's consent and signature on December 25. Abhishek, Mamata claim 'sting video' exposed BJP plan to defame TMC over Sandeshkhali; Rahul Sinha hits back

Abhishek, Mamata claim 'sting video' exposed BJP plan to defame TMC over Sandeshkhali; Rahul Sinha hits back In an explosive claim amid the bitter war of words over the alleged atrocities on women in Sandeshkhali, the TMC on Saturday flagged a purported sting operation broadcast by a local television channel to claim that the allegations against leaders and workers of the ruling party in the state were false and trumped up at the behest of Opposition leader and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari. Polling for the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, of which Sandeshkhali is a part, will be conducted in Phase 7 on June 1. The BJP put Rekha Patra, one of the first Sandeshkhali protesters who came out against expelled TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and his henchmen, accusing them of grave sexual crimes, excesses and landgrab on the island, on its ticket from Basirhat. In the alleged sting video, a person, purpotedly a BJP mandal (booth) president by the name of Gangadhar Koyal is heard saying that women, who weren't violated sexually were passed off as 'rape' victims at the behest of the LoP. Claiming that Suvendu 'helped' him get this done, the person in the video adds that the former told him that the TMC's stronngmen in the area wouldn't be arrested unless they were falsely implicated of 'rape'. However, the news channel, which broke the alleged sting operation, did not vouch for the veracity of the clip. Sharing a clip from the alleged sting operation, TMC leader and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, claimed on his official X handle that the people should see through the BJP's attempts to tarnish Bengal's image and reputation to advance and achieve its political ends. I am shocked beyond words to see the SANDESHKHALI STING VIDEO. Every citizen must witness the BANGLA BIRODHI BJP's ORCHESTRATED attempt to DEFAME AND MALIGN WB for their petty political ends. This abhorrent act epitomises the GROSSEST ABUSE OF POWER in history. SHAME!, Abhishek posted from his official X handle on Saturday. The people of Bengal will give a befitting reply to this 'staged' act, he claimed. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, too, posted about the alleged sting video from her official X handle, stating, The shocking Sandeshkhali sting shows how deep the rot is within the BJP. In their hatred for Bengal's progressive thought & culture, the Bangla-Birodhis orchestrated a conspiracy to defame our state on every possible level. Never before in the history of India has a ruling party in Delhi tried to malign an entire state and its people. History will witness how Bengal will rise in rage against Delhi's conspiratorial regime & ensure their Bishorjon (they will be consigned to the waters). A viral video today exposed how the BJP left no stone unturned to malign Bengal. From mass rape to arms seizure, every claim was BOUGHT and STAGED by none other than @SuvenduWB People won't forgive these Bangla-Birodhis. Bengal's mothers & sisters shall avenge this! read a post on the TMC's official X handle. However, trashing the alleged sting video as 'doctored', senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha told ANI, They are claiming an individual, who, in reality, is a TMC booth president, as our booth chief. There is no substance in this so-called sting video. Mamata Banerjee never once visited Sandeshkhali to stand with the wronged and tortured women there. Shahjahan, the key Sandeshkhali accused, is currently behind bars in connection with the attack on a team of the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) while it was in the process of raiding his residence in connection with the alleged ration scam. Earlier, a CBI team visited the Rajbari area of Sandeshkhali to probe land-grabbing charges against the now-expelled TMC strongman. He was arrested on February 29, 55 days after being on the run in connection with the assault on the ED team. Earlier, the Calcutta High Court, which has been arbitrating on the Sandeshkhali case, stated that the CBI, in its report, mentioned huge volumes of land-grabbing allegations and a lack of proper cooperation from the state authorities. The court also directed the state to deploy more staff to help with the investigation. The women of Sandeshkhali in the North 24 Parganas district came out on the streets earlier against the ruling TMC and Shahjahan, accusing the strongman and his aides of perpetrating gross excesses and atrocities on them while also gobbling up their land. Multiple women on the island accused Shajahan and his aides of land-grab and sexual assault under coercion. (ANI)

Cenre Lifts Ban on Onion Exports; Imposes Minimum Export Price of USD 550 Per Tonne

In just two weeks, onion price per quintal rose to Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,000 from Rs 900 to Rs 1,000 level, while retail price shot up to Rs 25 per kg from Rs 10 to Rs 15. In just two weeks, onion price per quintal rose to Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,000 from Rs 900 to Rs 1,000 level, while retail price shot up to Rs 25 per kg from Rs 10 to Rs 15. New Delhi: The government on Saturday lifted the ban on onion exports but imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne, amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the country. Last night, the government imposed a 40 per cent duty on export of onions. In August last year, India had imposed a 40 per cent export duty on onions up to December 31, 2023. The export policy of onions is amended from prohibited to free subject to MEP of USD 550 per metric ton with immediate effect and until further orders, the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification. On December 8, 2023, the government banned export of onions from March 31 this year. In March, the export prohibition was extended till further orders. In March, the Union Agriculture Ministry released the data for onion production. As per the data, onion production in 2023-24 (First Advance Estimates) is expected to be around 254.73 lakh tonnes compared to around 302.08 lakh tonnes last year. This is due to a decrease of 34.31 lakh tonnes output in Maharashtra, 9.95 lakh tonnes in Karnataka, 3.54 lakh tonnes in Andhra Pradesh and 3.12 lakh tonnes in Rajasthan, the data showed. Last month, in an official statement, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said the government has allowed export of 99,150 tonnes of onion to six neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, UAE, Bhutan, Bahrain, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. Farmers in Maharashtra had protested against the export ban. The Congress last month accused the Narendra Modi government of callously neglecting Maharashtra's onion farmers reeling due to the ban on onion exports and said that its manifesto promises a predictable import-export policy to prevent such catastrophic last-minute policies being imposed on farmers.
