JD(S) leader HD Revanna detained in kidnapping case after court rejects anticipatory bail

JD(S) leader HD Revanna was detained by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Karnataka police in Bengaluru on Saturday. The arrest came subsequent to a court's refusal of his anticipatory bail request in connection with a kidnapping case registered at the KR Nagar police station in Mysuru. Revanna was apprehended by SIT officials at the Padmanabhanagar residence of his father and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. His arrest comes after a Special Court for People's Representatives in Bengaluru rejected the JD(S) leader's anticipatory bail plea in the kidnapping case. The son of the 'abducted' woman has alleged that his mother was abducted and sexually abused. In his complaint filed at the KR Nagar police station in Mysuru district, the man said his mother worked as a housemaid at HD Revanna's home for six years before returning to her village, where she worked as a daily wage labourer. The complainant said that on April 23, his mother was taken away by a man named Sathish Babanna, who claimed to have been sent by HD Revanna's wife, Bhavani Revanna. She returned home on April 26. Then on April 29, Babanna took her away again, citing an old legal issue as justification. The man later discovered a video allegedly depicting sexual abuse of his mother by incumbent MP and Hassan Lok Sabha candidate Prajwal Revanna, prompting him to confront Babanna. My mother's picture is also in the obscene video controversy. She suddenly disappeared after the videos were revealed, the son added. He then filed a kidnapping complaint against HD Revanna and Babanna on Thursday night. The Holenarsipura MLA and his associate were booked under Sections 364A (kidnapping for ransom), 365 (kidnapping with intent to cause harm) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. The FIR, registered by KR Nagar police, also lists HD Revanna as accused number one and Babanna as accused number two under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Notably, the JD(S) MLA, along with his son and party MP Prajwal Revanna, are also facing allegations of sexual abuse in connection with the 'obscene videos' case. The duo are facing a probe by the SIT, constituted by the Karnataka government, over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in their household. Revanna was booked in an alleged sexual harassment case on April 28 based on a complaint lodged with Holenarasipura Town police. The case was registered under sections 354A, 354D, 506, and 509 of the IPC on charges of sexual harassment, intimidation, and outraging the dignity of a woman. As per the complaint, the victim claimed that Prajwal Revanna and his father, HD Revanna, had sexually assaulted her. Explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days, following which the state government constituted the SIT to probe the alleged sex scandal involving the MP. Prajwal Revanna is said to have flown abroad on April 27, a day after the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka held on April 26.

The talk is to win four in four (remaining games). It's important to turn up and deliver our best. I feel our fielding has let us down. We have had a chat about it. We need to be a better team as a fielding unit, we have had a chat. IPL is such a long tournament. It's important to turn up on the day, he said. Historical Portrait of Travancore's Last Queen by Ravi Varma on Display Until May 30

Historical Portrait of Travancore's Last Queen by Ravi Varma on Display Until May 30 The 'hitherto unseen' portrait of Raja Ravi Varma featuring his eldest granddaughter as a three-year-old toddler, unveiled in Bengaluru on the occasion of his 176th birth anniversary on April 29, will continue to be open for public viewing till May 30. Ravi Varma's eldest granddaughter, Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi (1895-1985), was the last ruling queen of Travancore and was considered a living goddess by her subjects. She had ruled the Kingdom of Travancore for seven years from 1924 to 1931. The painting is also a never-seen-before portrait of the Maharani, whose life is well documented. Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation (RRVHF) had mounted a show on her titled, 'Daughter of Providence,' tracing the chronology of how the three-year-old toddler painted by Ravi Varma went on to become the queen, who is known even today for the social reforms she brought about. RRVHF had acquired the painting from the Travancore royal family. ''While the focus of the foundation remains documentation and preservation of Raja Ravi Varma's work, we often come across paintings done by the artist that have never been seen, researched, documented or published before they reach our hands. This painting of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi as a three-year-old girl is one such work that needs to be spoken about,'' said Gitanjali Maini, managing trustee and CEO of RRVHF. The exhibition was conceptualised by the foundation with research and documentation by historian Manu S Pillai, who wrote an award-winning book, The Ivory Throne: Chronicles of the House of Travancore, on the life ofMaharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi.

Can YSRC breach Naidu fortress kuppam?

CHITTOOR : Election fervour reached new heights in Kuppam Assembly Constituency this time as N Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP supremo and sitting MLA, aggressively campaigned in the region to seek an unprecedented eighth term. Rangaswami Naidu of the TDP had won from Kuppam in 1983 and 1985. Naidu has been representing Kuppam since 1989. However, his winning streak was challenged in the 2019 elections as YSRC president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy upped his ante against the TDP supremo. With the ruling YSRC making electoral gains in local body elections and Naidus vote margin considerably dropping over the past three elections, the Assembly polls have become a high stakes battle for the Opposition TDP, highlighting the need for proactive measures to secure electoral success. His recent door-to-door campaigning in Kuppam marks a significant shift in his political strategy. This comes in the wake of YSRC targetting Kuppam in a bid to win all 175 Assembly seats. Jagan had set his sights on Kuppam since before 2014. He nominated retired IAS officer Chandramouli in 2014 and 2019 to take on Naidu. Although he lost both times, the margin with which Naidu won dropped. From an impressive 65,687-vote margin in 1999, Naidus lead progressively declined to 59,588 in 2004 and 47,121 in 2014. In the 2019 elections, his majority reached its lowest point at 30,722 votes. After Chandramoulis demise in 2020, Jagan nominated his son and MLC KRJ Bharat as Kuppam MLA candidate. With an aim to reinforce his connection with the people of Kuppam, Naidu has taken up several campaigns, including roadshows, public meetings, and interactions with party workers. The former chief minister is not only sure of his victory, but he has also asserted that he will win with a majority of one lakh votes. Naidu has appointed MLC Kancharla Srikanth as chairman of the constituency co-ordination committee and entrusted the management of the constituency coordination committee to PS Muniratna. The coordination committee then named R Chandrasekhar as its convener. During his recent visit to Kuppam on March 25, Naidu unveiled ambitious plans for the regions development. He declared that he will transform Kuppam into a model town, outlining specific initiatives to uplift various sectors. He announced the creation of a special cluster, spread across 100 acres, for granite sculptors in Kuppam. Additionally, he has pledged to develop the airstrip to facilitate farmers practising agriculture, horticulture, and floriculture with exporting their produce internationally. Criticising Jagan for misleading people regarding the release of water from the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) project into the Kuppam branch canal, the TDP chief has assured the people that HNSS waters will soon reach the Kuppam region, ensuring the replenishment of village tanks in preparation for the next agricultural season. Both the ruling YSRC and the TDP have been claiming credit for the works undertaken as part of the HNSS project in the region. This project aims to release water from Krishna River into the local tanks and water bodies of the constituency. It may be noted that on February 26, 2024, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy released Krishna River water into the Kuppam Branch Canal, which is part of Phase-II of the HNSS project. This project, completed at a cost of `560 crore, was undertaken in the Rajupeta village of Ramakuppam mandal. Furthermore, the TDP chief also promised to establish an engineering college affiliated with the Dravidian University so it can serve as the accreditation authority for all degree colleges in Chittoor district. He also announced plans for constructing an outer ring road and a four-lane road to Bengaluru, aimed at improving connectivity and infrastructure in Kuppam. This is the maiden election after Kuppam town was upgraded from Nagar Panchayat to Grade-III municipality. Political experts are of view that Jagan elevating Kuppam gram panchayat as municipality was intended to project that he intends to do greater things for the town, which Naidu could not do since 1989. Ruling party leaders are now claiming that Jagan has fulfilled his promise and extended locals their due representation. Nonetheless, TDP leaders and supporters remain steadfast in their belief in Naidus capability to emerge victorious, highlighting his track record and the electorates acknowledgment of his accomplishments in contrast to the governance of YSRC. Dravidian University The prevailing sentiment among voters overwhelmingly favours Naidu, underpinned by his legacy of industrial development spanning over three decades and substantial progress across all sectors. While the welfare schemes of the ruling party have had some impact in rural areas, residents there have also recognised the financial strain caused by rising prices and heavy taxes, said Raju, a private employee. Both the ruling YSRC and TDP have been trying to win the hearts of communities, including Vannekula Kshatriyas, Kuraba, Muslim and others which plays a key role in the segment. In fact, YSRC candidate KRJ Bharath is a Vannekula Kshatriya. Kuppam constituency is located between Tamil Nadu to the east and Karnataka to the west. This proximity to two States significantly influences the political dynamics in Kuppam. With its location on the border, the influence of neighbouring States also weighs heavily on Kuppam. The constituency encompasses the Chittoor district, including Kuppam Municipality, Kuppam, Ramakuppam, Gudupalle, and Shantipuram mandals. Chandrababu Naidu is a visionary leader and he has to focus on the entire State and not only in Kuppam. Naidu has developed roads and drinking water facility in rural areas of the constituency. There has been no massive development in the constituency during the YSRC-led government in Kuppam. People of the constituency are always with Naidu, said S Muniswamy, a 65-year-old from Kuppam town. Sukumar, another resident of Kuppam, rued that majority of the rural population are dependent on Bengaluru city and parts of Tamil Nadu for their livelihood. Hundreds of people from rural pockets of Kuppam basically rely on construction works in Bengaluru city and the outskirts. They go early in the morning and return to their villages in the evening. The severe drought condition has forced the people to migrate to the neighbouring States, he added. The YSRC is banking on its plan to develop Kuppam municipality with `66 crore. It has proposed works for water supply, construction of CC roads, drains, street lights, community halls at Lakshmipuram, Kamathamuru, DK Palli SC colony and Thambiganpalli, electrical crematorium, construction of new municipal office in the town. Naidu has done nothing in his own constituency even when he served as chief minister for 14 years. Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced a separate division for Kuppam and converted the major Panchayat as a municipality. We have planned to develop Kuppam as a horticulture hub, besides providing livelihood to people in the region. The YSRC government will ensure the provision of irrigation water to 6,300 acres of ayacut through 110 minor irrigation tanks in the Kuppam constituency, fulfilling the long-standing demand of the people for access to drinking and irrigation water, marking a new era of prosperity and growth for the region, said Bharath. In the ensuing elections, a total of 34 nominations were filed in Kuppam. Of these, the election commission accepted 21 and rejected nine, while two candidates withdrew from the race. Currently, there are 13 contenders in the primary race between the TDP and the YSRC.

Malaria: Beware of that bite

CHENNAI: In India, malaria still poses a serious threat to public health despite considerable improvements in recent years. To save yourself and your loved ones against this preventable disease, it is essential to comprehend the risk factors and put preventive measures in place. Recognising the spread of malaria Plasmodium parasites are the cause of malaria, an infectious disease spread by mosquitoes. Via contaminated blood feeds, the Anopheles mosquito spreads the parasite to people. Because these mosquitoes breed in stagnant water bodies, malaria transmission is more common in locations with poor drainage especially during the monsoon season (June to September). In India, who is most vulnerable to malaria? Travellers: People travelling to or relocating to locations where malaria is endemic, especially those that are mountainous, forested, or tribal belts, are at high risk. Individuals who live close to bodies of stagnant water: In peri-urban and rural regions, mosquitoes that thrive in puddles, ponds, or badly- maintained drainage systems constitute a serious menace. People with impaired immune systems: Those with HIV/AIDS, chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and children under five are particularly vulnerable to severe malaria. Communities without adequate preventative measures and sanitation. Effective ways to stop malaria Bed nets treated with long-lasting insecticides, or LLINs: The most effective way to prevent malaria is to sleep under insecticide-treated LLINs. Make sure you have full coverage. Given that they are more susceptible to the illness, pregnant women and small children should especially use LLINs. Repellents for insects: Carefully follow the directions on the package when applying repellents containing DEET (Diethyltoluamide), picaridin, or IR3535 to exposed skin and clothes. Especially during outdoor activities in the evenings and early mornings when mosquitoes are most active, repellents offer an extra layer of protection. Minimise sites for mosquito breeding: Avoid water stagnation from the areas surrounding your house, making sure drainage systems are in working order, and controlling vegetation close to homes. By supporting neighbourhood-level programmes for trash management and drainage enhancement, mosquito breeding grounds can be greatly reduced. Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS): Insecticides are frequently sprayed outdoors, and repellents are used indoors as part of public health campaigns to kill mosquitoes. When such programmes are offered in your region, participate in them. IRS campaigns are an effective strategy for managing mosquito populations, and their success depends on community involvement. Early diagnosis and treatment: Seek emergency medical assistance if you have any of the following symptoms, especially after visiting a high-risk area: fever, chills, sweating, headache, muscle pains, or exhaustion. Complications and transmission can be avoided with early diagnosis and timely medical care. Effective therapy of malaria and stopping the diseases spread depend on early symptom recognition and medical consultation. Weak in the knees?

CHENNAI: Arthritis is one of the most debilitating conditions in terms loss of quality of life. Most patients suffer pain along with disturbed sleep and other health-related issues. With 21st century medical advancements, a patient suffering with knee pain and not being treated right is a crime. There are various modalities to treat such as medications, knee braces/orthotics, physiotherapy and finally, surgery. When we talk about surgery, we talk about overall alignment and best mobility for the patient. The knee surgery can be of various types such as: High tibial osteotomy. Uni compartmental/half knee replacement Total knee replacement Knee replacement surgeries are considered the most successful and they come in top three surgeries in terms of success rates rightly done. With the current practices that we follow, most patients walk within six hours of the surgery. On the second day, they walk outside the room and by the third, they do independent chores with minimal support. This is achieved mainly because of good preoperative patient education and the following of enhanced rehabilitation protocol during and after surgery. This is achieved with good support from multidisciplinary team work such as anaesthetic team, physiotherapy team and the medical team. The current implants and the surgical techniques that are used enhance the patient outcomes and most of them are able to achieve sitting cross-legged by end of six weeks. These patients also can do most sporting activities such as tennis, badminton and running. Normally, they are advised against any contact sports such as football. How can I enhance my recovery after knee surgery? Faster recovery can be achieved by good muscle strengthening and increasing the muscle mass prior to the surgery. This helps patient to be back on their feet much faster and with less pain. Does robotic knee replacement have a faster recovery compared to the conventional knee surgery? According to the current evidences from the American Orthopaedic Association, European and national registry from UK, there is no clear evidence suggesting that the robotic surgery has a faster recovery. Hence, based on this evidence, the insurance companies do not approve robotic surgeries and the cost is borne by the patient themselves. The incision done for the conventional knee surgeries are much smaller compared to the robotic ones and hence the recovery is much faster . Why do we need to spend on robotic knee surgery if the conventional one is safe? A robotic knee surgery minimises errors in comparison to conventional for people who are newly trained in terms of knee surgeries or in cases of grossly deformed knees. The analogy for this is why do we need navigation to drive? Because navigation helps safer driving for a new driver and minimises errors, the same way the new surgeon finds it safer. Is there a difference between robotic and conventional knee replacement surgeries for walking faster? The answer is no! Both robotic and conventional knee replacements have same preoperative recovery time. However, a few studies show minimal dissection and smaller incision during surgery make post recovery faster. Adventure of a Lifetime

BENGALURU: Hit first, hit hard, and keep hitting victory will be yours. These words of his father kept ringing in Colonel Jangvir Lambas head as he took the uphill task of participating in the 38th edition of the Marathon des Sables, known as the toughest race on Earth. The race, covering 253.5 km done in various stages in Morocco, deep within the Sahara Desert, saw 52-year-old Lamba emerge victorious. Despite the sheer difficulty level associated with the ultramarathon extreme temperatures of 46-52 degrees Celsius, blisters on the feet, resurfacing of old injuries, dropping salt levels, and a general sense of fatigue Lamba never doubted he would finish the race. He completed the six-stage race in 67 hours and seven minutes, competing against 900 athletes from 60 countries. The race took place in April. At no point did the thought of not finishing the race even cross my mind. Its all about mental resilience that is associated with the endurance sport, he explains. This mindset likely stems from early advicefrom hisfather, advice he adheres to even now.He recallsa time in sixth grade when his father asked him to dopush-ups andhe could barely manage five or six. My father then took charge and over the next few years trained us. By the time I was in Class 11-12, I was doing 500 of them. As I trained, my father would always say one more. To this day any time Im pushing myself, I keep telling myself those two golden words, says the fourth-generation Army officer, currently posted at the ASC Centre and College in Bengaluru. PiC: Nagaraja Gadekal Previously a bodybuilder, Lamba suddenly found his aspirations crushed when he started developing spinal issues in 2019 and was advised to reduce his weight, as his condition could worsen. At that point, he decidedto switchto cardio exercises and took on the Ironman (a gruelling race consisting of a 3.9km swim, 180.2 km bike ride, and a 42.2km run) completing three (Cairns, Australia; Langkawi, Malaysia; and Goa) within just 12 months. Then, while browsing the internet, he discovered the Marathon des Sables and immediately signed up. The training itself wasnt as intense since I had previously been training for the Ironman for which I would start at2.30am, he says, adding, For Marathon des Sables, I only ran 10k every day, sometimes 21 km, with a 10 kg vest as weight. Drawing an analogy between lifes challenges andthe intenserace, Lamba reflects, There is so much pain one endures during the race but its hard to share during that point since everyone is going through their own. Its the same with life, isnt it? You cant always share what youre going through. This wasnt just a race, it was a test of endurance and a culmination of training and dedication. So, what lies next? Definitelyno race under 100 km! he signs off.

Charming tunes

BENGALURU: The imageof snake charmers, controlling snakes with theirbeens(awind instrumentused in snake charming), has been part of Indiasidentity forthousands of years. It was also one of the first symbols of exotic India from which people wanted to distance themselves as quicklyas possible. Although the practice of snake charming has long been banned, those who used to practice it seek alternative ways to sustain themselves. Roysten Abel, a theatre personality known for working withindigenous folkmusicians like the Manganiyars of the Thar Desert, is bringing a uniqueshow to Bengaluru. For the first time, 100 snake charmers will takethe stage, performing a symphony that includes Bollywood tunes,Scottish bagpipemelodies, and traditional snake charmer songs. The ideafor the show originated when Abel met Bahar Dutt, anenvironmental activistrunning an NGO called Friends of Snakes. She was working in Molarband, Delhi, a village where snake charmers live. She washelping themgive upSnake Charmingbut needed to find an alternativevocation forthem. Since Ive been working with indigenous folk performers fora longtime, I suggested we do something with 100 charmers, says Abel, adding that the show aims to redefinesnakecharmers identities from street performers to concert musicians. Assembling 100 snake charmers for a single musical production was achallenging proposition, given that beenis typically played solo. Abel recounts, When I proposed this, I was told it wasnt possibleand thateven playing with ten beens together is a difficult task. Itsnice totake on challenges sometimes. So then we started calling up snake charmers in UP, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Rajasthan. After holdingauditions that attracted 500 charmers from across the country,a groupof 100 was formed, each bringing theirowntunes and styles. The one-hourconcert includes traditionalsnake-charmingtunes andtunes fromthe Scottish Highlands. I find the instrument similar tothe bagpipesof Scotland. So, we have two bagpipe tunes, shares Abel, adding, The challenge in creating a musical production of this scale was to getthe hundredcharmers to synchronize and play together like a musical concert. Known for creating immersiveset designsfor his productions, Abel notes that this time the set issimple tokeep the focus on the musicians. The main visual is thatthe hundredcharmers are on stage, wearing their traditional outfits,he adds. The show hastravelledto various cities in the country andeven openedfor a festival in Naples, which was a unique experience for Abel. We performed in one of the oldest opera houses in the world, traditionally a place frequented by the elite bourgeois class andoften associatedwith nobility. To have our snake charmers perform in frontof thewhos who of Italy was remarkable, he shares. Abels projectextends beyond artistic innovation to create a new world fora dyingart form and the hundreds of people dependent on it. You justput themon a map where everybody wants to get rid of the snakecharmer becausethey think thats the old India. Also, it is such aunique instrumentto our country, you can explore them and see themin differentcontexts, he says, hopeful of creating analternative livelihoodfor the community. Rain rain come again!

BENGALURU: Big drops of plump raindrops fell on the parched footpaths of namma ooru bringing in some temporary relief. There was barely any chance to rejoice because the rain was gone as soon as it came. I fancifully imagined the earth opening and closing its mouth in anticipation of more precipitation, and I hurriedly (and rather foolishly) rolled down my car window hoping to get a whiff of damp earth and perhaps a cool breeze with a splatter of rain on my face. But alack! The blast of warm air that assaulted my visage brought me back to reality pretty fast. Other than trying to wave this heat-onslaught off with a couple of jokes and comments, we, Bengalureans, have to sit back and take a long hard look at the total dissipation of our beloved city. We have stood by and watched as unscrupulous people have usurped our lake beds, built ugly high-rise apartments on them and dumped waste and effluents into our water bodies. We have stood by and watched successive men-in-white build steel structures and auction off the trees that stood in the way. We have also protested (mildly) when our green landscape suddenly turned into cement heaps, and we the citizenry try valiantly to protect our green spaces like Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park (both whose acreage has diminished alarmingly). And when the chaos, the traffic and the lack of infrastructure overwhelm us, we sit back and talk about our wonderful weather over filter coffee! Now we dont even have that as we swelter with temperatures that are higher than cities and towns that border the Thar Desert! As far as Im concerned, people who care and are invested in the welfare of our beloved city belong and those who have a cavalier attitude dont! I really dont care about your phonetics! Now that I have vented, I need to do what ooruians do best. Close our eyes to the angst and talk fluff! Whats going on where, who is suffering from FOMO, how does one keep ones skin hydrated under layers of make-up, grand (and not so grand) openings, and a myriad of other such earth-shaking information. As one can see the heat wave hasnt played kindly with my mood, so the best thing to do was to pamper oneself. So I booked a special jaali massage at The Ritz-Carlton spa. Tired and harassed by the heat I walked into the swanky interiors of this hotel to be greeted by a shower of rose petals (that gave me the right vibe aka vataavaran). Greeted by a courteous staff, pampered to the hilt with a synchronised massage (or a four-hand jaali massage) by young women with strong hands! I keep telling myself Im worth it! Last evening I attended an elegant sit-down dinner called Shefs at The Leela, an initiative to give female chefs a level playing field in male-dominated professional kitchens. An initiative conceptualised by travel & food columnist Rupali Dean and VP/GM Madhav Sehgal, the evening abounded with showcasing the talents of three shefs Radhika, Prerana and Devika, with interesting conversations about what inspires them as they were deeply connected with sustainability. So the adage of she foraged, she prepared, she perfected was spot on! Dont direct the windadjust the sails! (The writers views are personal; this column was written before Fridays rains)

Karnataka HC wont quash case against BTC for evading tax

BENGALURU: In a setback to bookies of the Bengaluru Turf Club (BTC), the Karnataka High Court refused to quash the criminal proceedings initiated against them by the CCB, for allegedly not depositing the crores of rupees collected from the punters and bettors towards GST and TDS, before the concerned department. While dismissing the petition filed by Surya and Co 25 other bookies, Justice S Vishwajith Shetty observed that the allegations against the accused are very serious as they allegedly misappropriated crores of money collected by them, towards payment of GST and TDS. This is one among other allegations. Under the circumstances, the prayer made by the petitioners for quashing the FIR registered against them cannot be granted, he said. The petitioners have challenged the legality of the crime registered by the CCB before the High Grounds police station for the offences punishable under the provisions of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963, Karnataka Race Betting Act and IPC. Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty, and additional state public prosecutor BN Jagadeesha contended that the statement of 21 punters disclosed that bookies have collected GST at the rate of 25 percent while collecting the betting amount, and no receipts were issued. The bookies, who have not maintained any record of the winning bettors, have also collected 30 percent TDS amount, they stated before the CCB. The state government has also submitted that the raid was conducted after the completion of four horse races, and an amount of Rs 3.45 crore was seized. For the period from June 1, 2023, to January 18, 2024, a total of 1,507 races have been conducted in BTC but the total collection shown was only Rs 24.96 crore for the said period. If the average of four races is taken into consideration, the total betting amount for the 1,507 races is Rs 1,302 crores. But the collection shown was Rs 24.96 crore only, to evade tax, the state argued. The state also submitted that the BTC president has also stated before the CCB that the bookies are not authorised to enter transactions in pencil sheets and the betting cards issued by them are not in the requisite format as they do not even contain tax invoices or GST numbers.

Bitcoin scam: Karnataka HC Directs Dysp to appear before I.O., wont quash cases

BENGALURU: Refusing to quash the two FIRs registered against absconding accused Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shridhar K Pujar, by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing the Bitcoin scam and a staff for an alleged attempt on his life when he went to arrest him, the Karnataka High Court directed Pujar to appear before the investigation officer at 9 am on May 8. The investigation officer is at liberty to take Pujar to judicial custody and conclude the custodial investigation on the very same day before 6 pm and Pujar should cooperate with the investigation agency and at the same time, the prosecution should not indulge in extra-judicial methods while investigating the matter, the court said. The court added that after the conclusion of the custodial investigation, Pujar should be let free by taking a bond of Rs 2 lakh with two sureties and he should appear before the investigation officer as and when called and should not in any way tamper the prosecution evidence. Justice V Srishananda passed the order while disposing two petitions filed by Pujar questioning the two FIRs, without expressing any opinion on the merits of the matter. In the case on hand, there is no special reason for this court to quash the FIR itself, the court observed while noting that an arrangement needs to be made which would strike a harmonious balance between the rights of the petitioner and the need of the prosecution. The order was passed after hearing the arguments of senior advocate Aruna Shyam appeared for the accused Pujar and Additional State Public Prosecutor B N Jagadeesh on behalf of the CID. It is a settled principle of law and requires no emphasis that every accused is presumed to be innocent unless the allegations levelled against him stand proved before the court of law beyond all reasonable doubts. However, the prima- facie material would reveal that the petitioner said to be involved in helping the accused in a crime registered in the KG Nagar police station in 2020, the court noted. However, the court allowed another petition filed by Pujar and quashed the order of proclamation passed by the trial court against him, on account of procedural irregularities. Pujar is at liberty to appear before the jurisdictional court and subject himself to investigation, the court added. The HC also rejected the anticipatory bail to Pujar who is not available for investigation till now since the crimes are registered.

Kerala: 816g MDMA seized in 48 hours; surge in drug haul anticipated after LS poll

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The enforcement agencies have seized a large quantity of synthetic drugs from two locations in the state within a span of 48 hours, indicating that the drug menace is going to intensify further in the state after the Lok Sabha polls. About 616g of MDMA was seized by the excise from Kozhikode rural on Thursday, while 200g were seized from Angamaly by the police on Friday. The seized contraband could fetch more than Rs 25 lakh in the open market, said an excise source. As per the excise sources, the smuggling of narcotics to the state had reduced since March third week due to the heavy deployment of police, excise and other paramilitary forces in the inter-state borders owing to the Lok Sabha polls. Since the poll date was announced on March 16, the state and central agencies had intensified the scrutiny of vehicles on the inter-state borders of Kerala. Apart from the police and excise, officers from the Income Tax department, SGST division, Directorate of Enforcement, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), and the Narcotics Control Bureau were involved in inspections at the state border and within the state. A senior excise officer told TNIE that seizure of commercial quantity of MDMA rarely happened in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls. MDMA weighing more than 10g is considered as a commercial quantity, as per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). Because of the strict surveillance on border points and multi-layered screening of vehicles done within the state and outside, it was almost impossible to smuggle in contraband during the Lok Sabha poll campaign period. Now, that the polls are over in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, we are expecting a surge in smuggling attempts. More seizures are also expected in the coming days, he said. The synthetic drugs reach Kerala from Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Goa, while cannabis is sourced from plantations located in the hinterlands in Andhra-Odisha border. Since the Lok Sabha poll date was announced, heavy deployment of law enforcement officers made movement of the narcotics a risky affair. Now that the vigilance has been scaled down, the rackets having inter-state connections would be eying to push in the drugs, the excise officer added.

BWSSB aims to recycle 1 crore MLD of sewage to reduce pressure on Cauvery by 50%

BENGALURU: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is on its way to increase supply of water treated with zero-bacteria technology to significantly reduce dependency on Cauvery water or borewells. The board is already sending three lakh litres of zero-bacteria treated sewage water daily to IT major Wipro, and has set an aim to treat one crore litre of water treated with the zero-bacteria technology. The sewage water is categorised as black water (which comes from sanitary lines) and grey water (discarded from bathrooms, kitchens and domestic use). BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said the demand for treated water has increased in Bengaluru from 60,000 litres to six million litres per day (MLD) over a decade and the board is treating 1,200 MLD of sewage water. Water experts have said this initiative can significantly reduce pressure on Cauvery and borewell water for secondary purposes like bathing, washing, cleaning vehicles, gardening, AC maintenance and other non-potable functions by 50 per cent. Water expert and environment professional Vishwanath Shrikantaiah said that 440 MLD of treated water from KC Valley was filling up tanks in Kolar, while 260 MLD of treated water from HN Valley was filling up tanks in Bengaluru Rural, Chilkkaballapur and Anekal. This arrangement is for agricultural purposes, although the treated water is also supplied for lake rejuvenation and for industry use, he said. Currently, 1,470 MLD of Cauvery water is supplied to Bengaluru through pipes, and under Cauvery stage V, additional 775 MLD of water will be supplied. If we put all our Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to good use, recharge the ground, and protect our lakes, we can reduce stress on Cauvery water by 50 per cent.

Bengaluru rejoices as rain cools the city

BENGALURU: The first day of pre-monsoon thundershowers brought the much needed relief to Bengalureans who were reeling under the longest dry spell for the last 160 days. Thunder showers, coupled with strong winds witnessed a dip in the temperature, bringing joy to the citizen who have been waiting for Bengaluru weather to cool down. According to IMD, before the rain started, at 2.10 pm, the maximum temperature was at 35.5oC, which dropped by 11.3oC soon after the showers. Children, youth and seniors alike, were enjoying the rain. Many people in Indiranagar, Whitefield, Koramanagala and Sarjapura came out of their offices during lunch hours to take a walk in the rain. People were seen dancing and enjoying the rain in Cubbon Park. However, the rain resulted in traffic jams, due to water logging near Nagawara and Horamavu underpass. The traffic police had taken to social media to issue alerts of slow moving traffic. Netizens took to social media to share images of the rain fed areas. Reels and images of people welcoming the rain started trending. Usually during the day time, the maximum temperature in the city hover around 36-39 degree Celsius. However on Friday, it dipped to 23oC. After rain, temperature was 24.2oC. This rain is due to local convection and a trough. Earlier there was an anti-cyclone at 3.5 kms above mean sea level, which was not favourable for cloud formation. Now it has moved northwards. Due to this, there is clumino-nimbus cloud formation and thundershowers, IMD director N Puviarasan told TNIE. On Thursday evening, isolated parts of the city had experienced light to moderate rainfall. However on Friday, Bengaluru, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Kolar, and other areas of south interior Karnataka experienced thunder showers. Parts of Mysuru and Kodagu also reported hailstones. As per IMD, most parts of the city recorded rain from 2.10- 3.20 pm. In some areas, rain continued till 4pm. According to IMD, City recorded 17.2mm rainfall till 5.30 pm. HAL airport recorded 0.3 mm, KIA recorded 0.1mm rain. As per KSNDMC data, maximum rain was recorded in Bidarahalli-45mm, till 5.30 pm. Just a few days ago, Bidarahalli and Kengeri had recorded a maximum temperature of around 41oC. The KSNDMC officials said, most parts of the city recorded 10- 17mm rainfall. As per IMD, the maximum wind speed was 42 kmph at 2.50 pm, blowing in the northerly direction. Citys maximum temperature at 6 pm was at 25oC, with 89 per cent humidity. Puviarasan said Bengaluru and other parts of south interior Karnataka will continue to receive rain for the next two days, after which there will be a temperature rise. Thundershowers have been forecast on May 6 and 7 for south interior Karnataka. However heatwave conditions will prevail over north interior Karnataka. There were no reports of hailstones in the city as the clumino-nimbus clouds were at a lower height. Thunder showers have been forecast for two days, he said.

Rain no relief yet, borewells, water ATMs still dry in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: The water scarcity in Bengaluru continues to take a toll on the daily lives of people, as many parts of the city are running dry. Residents of Ilyas Nagar and nearby areas in Bengaluru South, face another challenge as Rs 5 RO water ATMs run by the BBMP fail to yield water everyday. There are at least three water ATMs In a radius of about 2 km, and they fail to yield water all throughout the day. Mohammed Saleem, a mechanic by profession and a resident of Ilyas Nagar said that his family of five require a can of water for daily drinking and cooking purposes. For the past one week, three of the four water machines have faced a shortage of water. Residents are welcomed with a board indicating no stock of water and that water will be available by 1.30 pm. However, those who come to fetch water end up seeing the board and do not get any water. An operator mentioned that due to summer heat, the water table has gone down and the borewells are not pumping enough water to the tank. Kiran K, who works in a private firm, said that they are paying Rs 5 for 25 litres of water but receiving only 70% of the water. Additionally, some 24-hour water filling centres close before 9 pm. Some people come with five to six water cans, which causes a problem for others. Operators must mandate one or two cans per person, as people have to stand in the line for a long time, he added. The BBMP Chief Engineer (South zone), said that some borewells in the city are drying up due to the extreme heat this summer, resulting in no water in the ATMs. The BWSSB is trying to temporarily fill up the borewells, so that the public can get water. The dry borewells will start working again if it rains, he added Speaking to TNIE Joint commissioner HR Shivakumar, said they are going to look into the issue and resolve the problem.

BJP eyes BC, Dalit votes in Karnataka, Congress depends on subsects of Lingayats

BENGALURU: With the campaign turning intense for the 14 Lok Sabha seats in North Karnataka that are going to the polls on May 7, BJP has been trying to woo a portion of Backward Classes and Dalit votes, which Congress is trying to consolidate, besides minority votes. The BJP that swept the entire North Karnataka in 2019 is pinning hopes on the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community continuing to support it, with former CM BS Yediyurappas son BY Vijayendra being the party state president. Then, of course, it banks on the Modi wave. But the party lacks prominent faces from Backward Classes and Dalits that can draw votes. Former minister KS Eshwarappa, a Kuruba, has rebelled and is contesting as an independent from Shivamogga. ST Nayaka leader and former minister B Sriramulu is running from Ballari. Their services could have otherwise been used by the party, political analysts said. That is why the party is experimenting with former minister Byrati Basavaraj, a Kuruba, among others. In Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, Yediyurappa and HD Deve Gowda are undisputed community leaders. Since the last Assembly polls, DyCM DK Shivakumar has emerged as the prominent Vokkaliga leader in Old Mysuru. That is the reason BJP and JDS forged an alliance for the Lok Sabha polls, said a political analyst. Siddaramaiah has been campaigning extensively in North Karnataka to garner AHINDA votes. In places like Kalaburagi, the Koli aka Kabbaliga community seems to be tilted towards Congress as their leaders, like Baburao Chinchansur, are back in the good books of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge. Both Congress and BJP are holding Koli community rallies, in which they are likely to address the issue of ST tag for the community. Besides AHINDA votes, Congress also hopes that Veerashaiva-Lingayats too back party candidates who hail from the community. Congress has tactfully fielded candidates from subsects within the community that have sizable votes. For instance, Mrinal Hebbalkar and Samyukta Patil, who hail from Panchamasali subsect, are contesting from Belagavi and Bagalkot seats, respectively. Ananda Gaddadevaramutt, who is from the Jangama subsect, is contesting from Haveri. Former DCM Laxman Savadi, a Ganiga Lingayat, has campaigned aggressively in North Karnataka, including Kalaburagi, where Kharges son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani is the Congress candidate.

Amid Prajwal row, BJP-JDS alliance likely to continue for Council polls

BENGALURU: Even as a section of BJP leaders feel that the alleged sex scandal involving JDS leader and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna has caused embarrassment to the saffron party, the BJP and JDS are most likely to continue with their alliance for the biennial elections to the Karnataka Legislative Council for six seats to be held on June 3. State JDS chief and former chief minister, HD Kumaraswamy, has been campaigning for the BJP in some of the constituencies that will go for polling in Karnataka on May 7, indicating that his partys alliance with the saffron party will continue. The JDS held the South West Teachers constituency, represented by SL Bhoje Gowda, and the South Teachers seat was won by Marithibbe Gowda. But Marithibbe Gowda resigned and joined the Congress. The BJP will also find a new face for the South West Graduates seat as Ayanur Manjunath has joined the Congress recently. The saffron party will contest from Bengaluru Graduates seat represented by A Deve Gowda, South East Teachers seat by YA Narayanaswamy, and North East Graduates seat won by Dr Chandrashekhar B Patil. Of the six seats that will go to the polls, the JDS may seek two and the BJP will contest from the remaining four. But the BJP may try to get another seat additionally because it had sacrificed the Bengaluru Teachers constituency, which it had held, to JDS in the bypolls held in February 2024. But JDS candidate AP Ranganath was defeated by Congress Puttanna. Several BJP leaders, including spokesman Ashwathnarayana Gowda, have confirmed that the BJP-JDS alliance will continue. But on seat sharing, leaders from both parties will sit together and take a call, said another spokesperson, MG Mahesh. The alliance between the two parties for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and zilla and taluk panchayat polls all depends on the outcome of the Lok Sabha polls. If JDS wins its three seats, including Hassan, the scenario will be different and the alliance will continue, said a BJP leader. The BJP-JDS alliance failed in the Bengaluru Teachers council seat bypolls. Let them (BJP-JDS) go with Prajwals face. We welcome it if they continue the alliance for the June 3 polls, as it will help the Congress, remarked KPCC media and communication chief Ramesh Babu, a former MLC.

Refer Neha Hiremath case to CBI if you cant probe it, Shah tells Siddaramaiah govt

BELAGAVI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while addressing a rally at Hukkeri in Chikkodi Lok Sabha constituency on Friday, took on the Siddaramaiah government over the murder of 23-year-old Neha Hiremath, and said if the State Government cannot properly investigate the killing, then the case should be handed over to the CBI. Shah, who was campaigning for Chikkodi BJP candidate Annasaheb Jolle, said the Central agency would ensure stringent punishment for Nehas killer. I met Nehas mother and found that there was pressure on the girl to convert. The State Government should hand over the case to CBI if it is not possible for it to investigate the case properly. The CBI will hang the killer upside down and straighten up things, the Home Minister added. Neha, a 23-year-old student, was brutally killed on her college campus in Hubballi last month. Lambasting the Congress government over the issue of law and order, Shah said, The 10-month-old Congress government in Karnataka has destroyed the entire state. If you trust PM Narendra Modi and vote for the BJP, the party will develop Karnataka in the coming days. The BJP has plans to take up several irrigation projects and also link several rivers. Shah said for the last 70 years, the Congress put the issues of Ayodhya Ram Mandir, Kashi Vishwanath Mandir Corridor project, development of Somnath Madir, Kedar Dham, and Badari Dham on the back burner due to its appeasement politics. He alleged that AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stayed away from the Ram Mandir inauguration ceremony in Ayodhya, fearing their partys vote bank. Shah asked the gathering if they want the Parivarvad Congress or the Parivarvad mitanewali BJP to come to power after the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. He asked the people whether Kashmir belonged to India or not and recalled Kharges statement, What was the connection of Rajasthan and Karnataka to the issue of Kashmir? Kharge saab... you have crossed 80 years of age but did not understand the people of Chikkodi, where every kid is ready to lay down his or her life for Kashmir. For the last 70 years, the Congress kept Article 370 in its lap and kept playing with it. Due to the Congress stand on Kashmir, terrorism continued. When Modi became the PM, the abrogation of Article 370 was done once and for all. When the Bill to abrogate Article 370 was tabled in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi opposed it, stating that a river of blood will flow in Kashmir if it is passed. I want to tell Rahul that nobody dared to even throw a stone, he added. He also defended the Centres decision to ban PFI and alleged that the Congress came to power in Karnataka with the support of SDPI, and soon after there was a bomb in a cafe in Bengaluru. Unfortunately, the State Government hastily claimed that it was a LPG cylinder blast. But the NIA investigation found that the anti-national SDPI carried out the blast, Shah said. Shah alleged Jolles political rivals were involved in cutting the hills, grabbing land, and insulting Hindu culture and warriors.
