Bhavesh Bhinde in Custody After Hoarding Collapse Disaster

Bhavesh Bhinde in Custody After Hoarding Collapse Disaster A court here on Friday remanded Bhavesh Bhinde, director of the advertising firm which had installed the hoarding that collapsed in suburban Ghatkopar and claimed 16 lives, in police custody till May 26. He was arrested in Udaipur, Rajasthan, on Thursday and brought to the city. M/S Ego Media Pvt Ltd, his advertising firm, managed the giant hoarding that collapsed on a petrol pump during a dust storm on May 13. As Bhinde absconded after the incident, police registered a case against him for alleged `culpable homicide not amounting to murder' under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code. After his arrest, crime branch of Mumbai police produced Bhinde before additional chief metropolitan magistrate (Esplanade court) K S Zanwar and sought his custody for 14 days. His agency managed three or four more hoardings, and a thorough investigation was needed in the matter, police said. Rs five crore is required to manage one hoarding, and it needed to probe financial aspects of Bhinde's business, besides finding out who gave the certificate for structural stability and permissions for installation, it said. Advocate Rizwan Merchant, appearing for the accused, claimed that police did not tell Bhinde the grounds of his arrest which made the remand plea invalid. Bhinde became director of the firm in December 2023 while the contract for the ill-fated hoarding was given to Ego Media in November 2022, hence he was not responsible for what happened at that point of time, the lawyer argued. The court, after hearing both the sides, sent the accused in police custody till May 26. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, it had not granted permission for the hoarding.

To mark this anniversary, the House of Suntory will be rolling out its centennial campaign throughout 2023. About Toki Suntory Whisky Toki, meaning time, is a concept that is deeply-woven into the Japanese way of life - a concept rich in meaning the world over, yet especially in Japan, where regard for convention and re-evaluation starts an amazing inventive vitality. The House of Suntorys fourth Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo was inspired to create a blend that is both groundbreaking and timeless, leading him to take a fresh approach with Toki. By bringing the grain component of the blend from the Chita distillery, where the heavy-type grain spirit is distilled only twice on column stills, and is vanilla-rich with a sweet undertone in its unblended state. Shinji-san sourced the malt component from the Hakushu distillery, which produces light, fruity malt similar to many Speyside distilleries. The unique pairing of Hakushu American White Oak Cask malt spirit with Chita heavy-type grain spirit overturns the traditional hierarchy between malt and grain. These seemingly dissimilar but deeply accordant spirits, together with select Yamazaki malts for additional depth and complexity give rise to the exquisite, silky taste, distinctive character and bold innovation of the blended Toki Suntory Whisky. Interview | Congress to win LS seats in double digits in Rajasthan: Ashok Gehlot

AMETHI: Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot has claimed that the Congress is going to win parliamentary seats in double digits in his state and exuded confidence that an INDIA bloc government would be formed at the Centre as winds of change were blowing in the country. In an interview with PTI here, Gehlot also hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remark that the Congress will get fewer seats in the Lok Sabha polls than he age of its shehzada, saying such jumlebaazi will not work as people have understood that the limit to the BJP's lies has been reached. Pakistani leaders praying for Congress; eager to make 'shehzada' next PM of India: PM Modi In the whole country, the message has gone that an INDIA bloc government is going to be formed. The first three phases (of the polls) have shown that this is the situation, the veteran Congress leader, who is here as the senior AICC observer for the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, said. Asked specifically about Rajasthan where polling was over in the first two phases of the polls for the 25 seats there, Gehlot said the Congress is going to do very well in his home state and pointed out that since the polls have begun, Rajasthan is being discussed in the media for this very reason. People of Rajasthan are remembering the schemes of our government. The BJP government has closed them down or is diluting them, so there is a major reaction to that, Gehlot said. The Congress had lost the assembly polls in Rajasthan last year as it bagged 70 seats against the BJP's 115. The Congress drew a blank in the state in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Gehlot alleged that the BJP won the assembly polls by resorting to lies. In the Kanhaiya Lal murder case. We caught the culprits within two hours. The culprits could have run away to Nepal or any other place. We went to the house of the victim, offered our condolences, caught the culprits, and people appreciated that, the former Rajasthan chief minister said. For the first time a package of Rs 50 lakh was given to any family. We also gave jobs to two children from that family. The NIA took over the case but nothing has happened, no one knows what happened to the case, Gehlot said. BJP-led NDA won't even get 150 seats in LS polls: Rahul Gandhi He claimed that his government was falsely maligned that it gave only Rs 5 lakhs to the family in the Kanhaiya Lal case while giving Rs 50 lakh to a Muslim victim's family in another case. This was made viral on social media. All this has become clear before the people. That is why I have said that I think this time, we are going to win seats in double digits in Rajasthan, Gehlot told PTI on Sunday night. Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, was hacked to death in Udaipur in 2022. Killers of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal linked to BJP, alleges Rajasthan CM Gehlot Asked about Modi's remarks that the Congress will get fewer seats in the Lok Sabha polls than he age of its shehzada, Gehlot said, The answer to that is that there was a time when Modi ji used to say something and people used to accept that but now those times have changed. They (BJP) started with '400 paar', 'phir ek baar Modi sarkaar' and then the BJP and its candidates have disappeared. People understood why they were talking of '400 paar' and looking to change the Constitution, he said. Allegations are already being made that the BJP is destroying the Constitution, democracy is in danger, the big scam of electoral bonds has come to the fore, and the Enforcement Directorate, CBI and the Income Tax Department are being misused by them with two sitting CMs put in jail, Gehlot said. INTERVIEW | '400 paar' a joke, '300 paar' impossible, '200 paar' challenge for BJP: Tharoor Gehlot also pointed out how the Congress' accounts were frozen and how all this had brought a bad name for the country. All these moves of the BJP turned people against them. There is a change in the situation now, so Modi ji is saying anything now, from mangalsutra, Congress will take your 'bhains' to our manifesto being of Muslim League, Gehlot. The former Rajasthan CM also hit out at the prime minister over his recent remarks in an election rally that why Rahul Gandhi had stopped taking the names of Adani and Ambani in his attacks. Modi had also wondered whether Gandhi had received money from these industrialists. He (Modi) even made the Adani-Ambani reference. If he has said this, then he should get the CBI to register a case and conduct an inquiry. A case was registered when women had met Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and told him what had happened with them. The Delhi Police registered a case and came to get his statement. Satyapal Malik flagged a scam of Rs 120 crore, CBI went after him. Here Modi ji is himself saying that tempo loads of black money has been given (to the Congress). What the PM says is important, so a case should be registered but nothing is happening, Gehlot said. So all this that Modi ji is saying that the Congress will not get more seats than Rahul Gandhi's age, this 'jumlebaazi' will not work, he added. On how many seats the Congress and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) will get, Gehlot said he cannot predict the number of seats at this juncture but asserted that people have made up their minds for change and were fed up with the BJP's false allegations. Winds of change are blowing and there is an undercurrent. That is why their (the BJP's situation is such that even in Gujarat many seats are in danger for them, he claimed. Gehlot also agreed that there were a number of silent voters in this election. Their (the BJP's) own voters are not coming out to vote. They also know that so many lies will not work and an extreme has been reached in peddling lies, Gehlot said. Asked about the Supreme Court granting interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and whether that will be a boost for the INDIA bloc, the Congress leader said it was a big thing that the court has given bail to a chief minister just for campaigning in accordance with the Constitution. He is the head of a political party, charges have not been framed against him, there is no evidence against him, what decision is made in the case is a matter for later. You could either have arrested him earlier or after polls but he was arrested right before polls. They arrested (then Jharkhand CM) Hemant Soren , froze the back accounts of the Congress. The BJP's situation has deteriorated because of these sequence of events I have talked about, Gehlot said. People have understood that it is now the limit, he said.

Kheri BJP Candidate Focuses on Development, Avoids Mentioning 2021 Incident

Kheri BJP Candidate Focuses on Development, Avoids Mentioning 2021 Incident On his campaign trail seeking a third term as MP from Kheri, Union Minister of State Ajay Mishra keeps to small meetings across the constituency where he talks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Viksit Bharat' and promises to change the ''fate of the this place''. The BJP leader, whose son Ashish Mishra was arrested in connection with the killing of four farmers protesting against the now-scrapped farm laws in Lakhimpur Kheri in October 2021, is rarely seen taking questions. There are often no reference to the incident or his son in any of the meetings as his team ensures a distance between Mishra and reporters. Addressing five small meetings daily on an average, Ajay Mishra sticks to the issue of neglect the constituency faced before Modi came to power. ''Kheri had been neglected by all parties. Nobody did anything for this place. From farmers to traders, everyone was neglected,'' Mishra said at one such small gathering of around 150 people at a crossing in the Palia area here. ''But things under Prime Minister Modi have changed across the country and here too. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working towards his target of Viksit Bharat by 2047. We all must ensure to add in our efforts for the same,'' he added. Hardly a week before the constituency goes to poll in the fourth round of the ongoing Lok Sabha election on May 13, Mishra, who is addressed as 'Teni Maharaj' by his supporters, keeps his speeches small, limits himself to the stage, avoids going among the people, folds his hands before local party workers and rarely offers to shake hands. ''You know the reality of the people of the INDI alliance. They have done nothing for the people except for confusing them. We have just one aim, that is of making India a superpower. And if India develops, how can Lakhimpur be left behind,'' the BJP leader said at another meeting on his campaign trail. Mishra avoids the media and moves ahead without taking any questions and his team ensures a distance between him and reporters. When asked about the issues in Lakhimpur Kheri for this election, he told PTI, ''I am busy with the elections these days,'' and hopped in his vehicle as the motorcade sped ahead for another meeting. Mishra was elected as the MP from Lakhimpur Kheri in 2014 when the ''Modi wave'' swept the country. He repeated his victory in the 2019 general election. Known to be close to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he was made the minister of state for home affairs in July 2021. Just months later, in October of 2021, Mishra faced the biggest challenge of his political career when his son Ashish Mishra was accused of killing four Sikh farmers protesting against the now-scrapped farm laws by running them over and arrested. Despite criticism and the arrest of his son, he retained his position as Union minister. Ashish Mishra is currently out on bail. Mishra and his team also avoid meetings in areas or villages dominated by the Sikh community. ''Many challenges have come before us but with your strength, I have countered them all. I am thankful for your support and I am assuring you that if you continue your support, I will change the fate of this place,'' Mishra said in a similar meeting held in Lakhimpur. Those attending these meetings are mostly men. At some places, a few women also join the meetings but sit at the back. People attending these meetings rarely ask questions. Dinesh Mishra, 22, a graduate who attended one of Mishra's meetings, said, ''People say that we have progressed in the world but this development has not yet reached our villages.'' Kamal Kumar Gupta, a local grain trader, who also attended one of Mishra's meeting said, ''It is true that not much has been done here but what options do we have. The opposition will bring back the 'Goonda Raj' on coming back to power.'' Villagers also raise issue of the lack of better health facilities, damaged roads and limited job opportunities. ''My son is preparing for competitive exams in Lucknow for the last four years but he has not been able to get a government job yet. He also appeared in the UP police recruitment exam but the paper was leaked. We are poor farmers and find it very difficult to afford his education,'' said Arvind Nath Singh of Udaipur village. Asked why he attended Mishra's meeting, Singh said, ''I just came to listen to him. I know politicians will not do anything for poor people like us.'' Ajay Mishra is contesting against Utkarsh Verma of the Samajwadi Party and Anshay Kalra of the BSP. Polling in Lakhimpur Kheri, which has over 18.6 lakh voters, will be in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha election on May 13.

181 academicians accuse Rahul Gandhi of spreading falsehood

New Delhi: As many as 181 academicians, including vice chancellors and former VCs, have accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of spreading falsehood regarding the appointment process for university heads and sought lawful action against him. In an open letter, they said the Congress leader has alleged that vice chancellors are appointed solely on the basis of affiliation with some organisation rather than merit as they slammed his claims. The process by which VCs are selected is characterised by stringent and transparent rigorous procedure grounded in the values of meritocracy, scholarly distinction and integrity, they claimed. Jawaharlal University Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, Delhi University VC Yogesh Singh and AICTE Chairman T G Sitharam are among the academicians who have signed onto the letter. The selection has been completely based on academic and administrative prowess and with a vision to take universities ahead, they said. Though they did not quote Gandhi's specific claims, the Congress leader has in the past alleged that affiliations with the Hindutva organisation RSS is often the guiding factor in appointments to academia. Among the signatories to the letter are Vinay Pathak, VC, CSJM University, Kanpur, Bhagwati Prakash Sharma, Chancellor, Pacific University, Udaipur, N C Gautam, former VC, Mahatma Gandhi Gramodaya Vishvavidyalaya, Chitrakoot, Alok Chakkarval, VC, Guru Ghasidas Central University, Bilaspur and Vinay Kapoor, former VC, BR Ambedkar National Law University, Sonipat. Universities in India have undergone a significant transition as evident in their ascent in global rankings, prominent accreditations, world class research and innovations, curriculum facelift narrowing the industry academia gap and higher placement prospects reaffirming their commitment to academic quality and societal relevance, they asserted. They said, The array of academic disciplines and professional experiences represented amongst us stands as evidence of the unbiased and inclusive nature of the selection procedure. It reflects their dedication to cultivating an atmosphere that values and promotes diversity, encourages independent thinking, and supports scholastic achievement, they said. Rahul Gandhi has resorted to falsehood and has defamed the Office of the Vice Chancellors at large with the intent to derive political mileage out of it. It is, therefore, earnestly prayed that appropriate action be taken against him forthwith in accordance with law, they said. The academics said in their letter that as guardians of knowledge and administrators of academia, they maintain an unwavering commitment to maintaining the utmost levels of governance integrity, ethical behaviour, and institutional integrity. Urging everyone involved to exercise discernment in distinguishing fact from fiction, to abstain from spreading unfounded rumours, they called for dialogue that is well-informed, constructive, and supportive of their shared goal of creating a dynamic and inclusive educational environment.

BJP seeking votes in name of Lord Ram, won't benefit: Gujarat Congress Chief

BJP seeking votes in name of Lord Ram, won't benefit: Gujarat Congress Chief Gujarat Congress President Shaktisinh Gohil, on Saturday, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of seeking votes in the name of Lord Ram, claiming that they won't benefit from this as they are exposed before the public. In a democracy, votes are given on work, but in the name of work, BJP has done mischiefs. So they are seeking votes on the name of Lord Ram. But they are exposed to people, and they are not going to benefit from this, Gohil said while speaking to the media in Valsad. Gohil spoke to the media after Congress leaders held a public rally in Valsad in support of Ananthbhai Patel, the party's candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The constituency will go to polls on May 7. Further raising questions on the timing of the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Shaktisinh Gohil said, For Hindus, words made by Shankaracharya are last. Shankaracharya has said that a temple where 'Kalash' was not placed and construction work is not completed, Prana pratishtha can't be done. But as elections were approaching, they did it just for the sake of votes. And now their candidates are getting flak for it in Gujarat. When asked about his expectations and the kind of response they are getting in the state, Gohil said, Me, my party, and all my candidates are getting full support from the people of Gujarat, and that's why the BJP is frustrated, and their candidates are scared even of contesting elections. They said black money will return and everyone will get Rs 15 lakh. Nobody got it, but the BJP's account got all the black money. Farmers' income was not doubled but expenses doubled. We have a positive agenda; we talked of five 'Naya' and 25 guarantees, he added. Earlier in the day, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed a rally at Valsad and said that the BJP wants to weaken democracy in the country and has pressured every institution in the last 10 years to not comment against it. They (BJP) want to weaken democracy and the people of the nation. Institutions that protect your rights, be it media, have been weakened. The media used to ask us every day, but nothing of that sort is happening today, she said. All 26 parliamentary seats in Gujarat will go to the polls in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 7. BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed in Surat after the nomination papers of the Congress party's candidate Nilesh Kumbhani were rejected, as his three proposers claimed in an affidavit to the district election officer that they had not signed his nomination form. The third phase will include constituencies from Kutch, Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad East, Ahmedabad West, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Anand, Kheda, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Chhota Udaipur, Bharuch, Bardoli, Navsari, and Valsad. Rajasthan stage set for 2nd phase under scorching sun

JAIPUR : As the sun beats down on Rajasthans desert expanse, the political climate is heating up even more in anticipation of Fridays elections. With voting set to take place across 13 constituencies, the state has become a focal point of intense campaigning, with star campaigners from major parties leaving no stone unturned to ensure victory. Five to eight high-profile seats have caught the publics attention due to the stakes of the candidates involved. In the Jodhpur constituency, BJPs Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is locked in a fierce contest with Karan Singh Uchiarada from Congress. Having won the seat in both 2014 and 2019, Shekhawat faces a tough challenge from Uchiarada, who also hails from the Rajput community. Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha seat is another battleground where BJPs Om Birla, a two-time winner, is facing a formidable challenge from Prahlad Gunjal, who recently switched allegiance from BJP to Congress, belongs to the Gurjar community and enjoys the backing of ex-CM Vasundhara Raje, making the race closely contested. Chittorgarh seat sees BJP state president CP Joshi locking horns with Congresss Anjana Udaylal and BSPs Meghwal Radheshyam. Joshis campaign is further complicated by the presence of rebel BJP MLA Chandrabhan Singh Akya, who poses a significant threat due to his strong grassroots support and anti-Joshi sentiments. In Rajsamand, Mahima Singh Mewar (BJP) and Damodar Gurjar (Congress) are the main contenders. While the seat is traditionally considered safe for the BJP, the last-minute change in Congresss candidate has added a new dimension to the race, nominating Damodar Gurjar for this seat. Initially, Congress had chosen Sudarshan Rawat, who later backed out. Subsequently, Gurjar, originally fielded in Bhilwara, was moved to this seat. Religion plays a key role in the Udaipur constituency following the murder of tailor Kanhaiyalal. BJPs Mannalal Rawat and Congresss Tarachand Meena are the main contenders, with Congress facing potential vote bank erosion. The Tonk-Sawai Madhopur seat witnesses a polarised contest between BJPs Sukhbir Singh Jonapuria and MLA Harish Meena, with Gurjar-Meena vote polarisation evident. Banswara-Dungarpur seat is embroiled in controversy with Congress supporting candidate of BAP, Rajkumar Rot at the last minute and their official candidate, Arvind Damor, refuses to withdraw. In Ajmer, the BJP has nominated MP Bhagirath Chaudhary for reelection, while Ramchandra Choudhary, a seasoned dairy chairman, represents Congress. In Bharatpur, the Jat movement shapes the electoral landscape. The area boasts around 5 lakh Jat voters. Additionally, the region has about 3.50 lakh Jatav voters. Congresss Sanjana belongs to this community, while BJPs Ramswaroop Koli has previously won from the Bayana seat. Its a three-way contest in the Barmer-Jaisalmer seat. An independent candidate Ravindra Singh Bhati has emerged as a prominent figure, causing concern for both Kailash Chaudhary (BJP) and Umedaram Beniwal (Congress). The electoral battleground also features the sons of two former CMs, Vaibhav Gehlot and Dushyant Singh, contesting from Jalore-Sirohi and Jhalawar respectively. Similarly, Dushyant Singhs fifth-time bid from Jhalawar has posed questions about the strength of his opposition. High-stake 13-seat fight With this phase, polls to all 25 seats in the desert state will be over; 12 constituencies went to the polls in the first phase VOTERS No of AC segments: 200 Total voters: 2,80,78,399 Service voters: 26,837 Male voters: 1,44,48,966 Female voters: 1,36,02,272 Third-gender voters: 324 First-time voters (18-19 yrs): 8,66,325 Disabled voters: 3,22,829 Voters above 85 years: 3,01,742

PM Modi running 'school of corruption' in country: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is running a school of corruption in the country where he himself is teaching under the subject 'Entire Corruption Science. In a post on X, Rahul said that the BJP has made this course mandatory for its leaders. Narendra Modi is running a 'school of corruption' in the country! Where under the subject 'Entire Corruption Science', he himself is teaching each chapter including 'donation business' in detail, he said. Like-how are donations collected by conducting raids? how are contracts distributed after taking donations? how does the washing machine that washes away corrupt people work? how does the game of 'bail and jail' play out by making agencies as recovery agents? Rahul added. Further, he alleged that the BJP, which has become a 'den of corrupt', has made this 'crash course' mandatory for its leaders, the price of which the country is paying. The INDIA bloc's government will lock this school of corruption and close this course forever, the Congress leader said. Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah held a roadshow in Rajasthan's Udaipur on Friday evening. During the roadshow, Shah took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, mocking him over his past predictions of turmoil in Kashmir. In Kashmir, (Peoples Democratic Party chief) Mehbooba Mufti and (Congress leader) Rahul Baba (Gandhi) used to say there would be bloodbath here once Article 370 is removed, he said while addressing a gathering. Rahul Baba, five years have passed (since the abrogation of Article 370). This is the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Leave alone the talk of the bloodbath, no one has the guts to throw a stone there, Amit Shah added. Union Minister Meenakashi Lekhi said that the letter 'C' in the Congress stands for corruption, criminality, and communal violence. Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 concluded on Friday across 102 parliamentary constituencies spread over 21 states and Union Territories. Elections 2024: 21 states, UTs set for polling in phase one; 102 LS seats in fray

The first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will see 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories go to polls on Friday. The first phase of polling will take place across all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, all five seats in Uttarakhand, both seats in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Meghalaya, and the sole seat in Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, respectively. Polling will also take place for 12 out of 25 seats in Rajasthan, eight out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, six out of 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh, five out of 48 seats in Maharashtra, five out of 14 seats in Assam, and four out of 40 seats in Bihar. Additionally, three out of 42 seats in West Bengal, one out of 11 seats in Chhattisgarh, and one out of two seats in Tripura will be contested. In the union territories, one out of five seats in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the sole seats in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry, will be up for grabs. Voting for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will take place across seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with the counting of votes slated for June 4. Separately, voting will also be held for 92 assembly seats in the state elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim on Friday. Of the 102 Lok Sabha seats, the BJP had won 39 in 2019, with the ruling alliance NDA bagging 12, five and three of them in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, respectively. The BJP's existing allies hold seven of them. And in Tamil Nadu, the DMK-led alliance had swept 38 of the 39 seats in 2019 general elections. Amongst the prominent leaders trying their electoral luck in phase one are Union ministers Nitin Gadkari from Nagpur, Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal Pradesh (West), Arjun Ram Meghwal from Bikaner, Sarbanada Sonowal from Dibrugarh in Assam, Sanjeev Baliyan from Muzaffarnagar in western UP, Jitendra Singh from Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir and Bhupendra Yadav from Alwar in Rajasthan. Tamilisai Soundararajan, who recently resigned as governor of Telangana and Lt Governor of Puducherry to return to active politics, is contesting from Chennai South Lok Sabha constituency. Nakul Nath, son of Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath, is seeking reelection from Chhindwara. Will the BJP's lotus bloom in Tamil Nadu? Tamil Nadu is gearing up for polls a mid fierce campaigning and an intense three-way political battle between the alliances led by state heavyweightsthe DMK and the AIADMKand the BJP, respectively. With elections for 39 Lok Sabha seats looming, approximately 6.23 crore voters are poised to cast their ballots across nearly 68,000 polling stations. The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made unprecedented efforts to gain ground in the Dravidian stronghold. Modi's exhaustive campaign across Tamil Nadu, including rallies in Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, and Tirunelveli, underscores the BJP's determination to break its electoral jinx in the state. From raking up alleged corruption and 'parivarvad' politics of the DMK-Congress alliance to the Katchatheevu issue, Modi left no stone unturned in his nine visit to the state Coimbatore, the hub of western Tamil Nadu, is the most keenly watched constituency in the state and the BJP's K Annamalai is slogging to emerge victorious, battling against Dravidian giants the DMK and AIADMK. Meanwhile, the DMK, led by Chief Minister Stalin, has campaigned on platforms of social justice and welfare measures, portraying the elections as a battle against the BJP's divisive politics. Throughout the campaign, Stalin has repeatedly emphasised the importance of these elections, likening them to a second independence movement aimed at freeing the nation from the BJP's influence. In contrast, the AIADMK, under the leadership of Edappadi K Palaniswami, has staunchly defended its record in governance and taken a strong stance against the DMK's campaign. Palaniswami has vigorously addressed various issues, including law and order, and has accused the BJP of discrimination based on caste and religion. Despite facing challenges from both the DMK and BJP, the AIADMK remains confident in its ability to weather the storm, with Palaniswami asserting that the party will emerge victorious with the support of the electorate. UP: Eight seats up for grabs in India's largest state The first phase of the seven-phase parliamentary election in western Uttar Pradesh sees voters in eight Lok Sabha constituencies exercising their constitutional right. These constituencies, falling in the Jat and sugarcane belt, include Saharanpur, Bijnor, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Nagina, Moradabad, Rampur, and Pilibhit, spread across nine districts. The contest is three-cornered, primarily between the ruling BJP-led NDA, the Samajwadi Party (SP), and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The BJP has allied with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), while the SP has partnered with INDIA bloc ally Congress. The BSP, however, decided to go solo. Key issues for voters include employment, education, and development. A total of 80 candidates, including seven women, are in the fray. The eligible voter count stands at 1.43 crore, with a significant Muslim voter presence ranging from 35 to 50 percent. Notable candidates include Jitin Prasada from Pilibhit, who got the ticket over sitting BJP MP Varun Gandhi , Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan from Muzaffarnagar, and Azad Samaj Party chief Chandra Shekhar Azad from Nagina. In the previous 2019 polls, the BJP secured victories in Muzaffarnagar, Kairana, and Pilibhit, the BSP won in Saharanpur, Nagina and Bijnor, while the SP won in Moradabad and Rampur, the stronghold of its jailed leader Azam Khan. However, the party later lost Rampur to BJP in a bypoll. Cracking the Jat code: BJP's strategic courting of RLD and what it means in western Uttar Pradesh Maharashtra: Polls in 5 LS seats; Gadkari among 97 nominees in fray More than 95 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise on Friday in the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra , covering five of the 48 constituencies, where 97 candidates, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari of the BJP, are in fray. Polling will be held in the constituencies of Nagpur, Ramtek (SC), Bhandara-Gondia, Chandrapur and Naxal-hit Gadchiroli-Chimur (ST), all located in the easternmost parts of the state. There are 95,54,667 voters in the five Lok Sabha constituencies in the Vidarbha region where voting will take place on Friday. Of these, 48,28,142 are male, 47,26,178 are female and 347 are transgender voters, according to a statement from the state electoral office. In Nagpur, which houses the RSS headquarters, a direct fight is on cards between Gadkari, who is seeking a third term, and Congress candidate Vikas Thakre. First phase of LS polls in Maharashtra: It's Congress party's 'caste calculations' vs BJP's 'Modi charisma' In Chandrapur, BJP candidate and Maharashtra minister Sudhir Mungantiwar is facing Congress nominee Pratibha Dhanorkar, wife of late parliamentarian Suresh Dhanorkar, who was the lone MP from the grand old party to be elected from Maharashtra in 2019 from the seat. In Bhandara-Gondia, the BJP has fielded sitting MP Sunil Mendhe, who is pitted against Congress candidate Dr Prashant Patole. Two-time Lok Sabha MP of BJP, Ashok Nete, is contesting against Congress nominee Dr Namdev Kirsan in Gadchiroli-Chimur (ST), where some areas are affected Naxal insurgency. In the 2019 elections, Nete had defeated Congress candidate Dr Namdev Usendi. In Ramtek (SC), the fight is between Shyamkumar Barwe of the Congress and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena's candidate Raju Parwe. Maharashtra, which has 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second highest after Uttar Pradesh, will vote in five phases between April 19 and May 20. Rajasthan: 12 seats in fray; will BJP's dominance continue? In the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Rajasthan, 12 out of 25 seats will be contested. Polling will be held in Churu, Nagaurm, Ganganagar, Jhunjhunu, Bikaner, Sikar, Jaipur Rural, Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur and Dausa. According to chief electoral officer Praveen Gupta, a total of 2.54 crore voters are set to vote in the first phase on Friday. Notably, a Union minister is among the 114 candidates in the fray. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is contesting from Bikaner against Congress candidate Govind Ram Meghwal. The Bharatiya Janata Party won all 25 seats in Rajasthan on its own in 2014, and in 2019, the NDA won 25 seats, the saffron party won 24 seats and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) won one seat. Key constituencies include Nagaur, witnessing a contest between the RLP, now in alliance with Congress, and the BJP, and Churu, with former BJP MP Rahul Kaswan contesting as a Congress candidate. In Sikar, the CPI(M) is challenging the BJP's incumbent MP. The ruling BJP focused its campaign on PM Modi's popularity and its infrastructure work, while the Congress raised issues of central agency misuse and unemployment. Notable campaigners include PM Modi, Amit Shah, and Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi. The second phase of the elections in Rajasthan will be held on April 26. In the second phase, polls will be held in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies: Tonk, Ajmer, Pali, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jalore, Udaipur, Banswara, Chittorgarh, Rajsamand, Bhilwara, Kota and Jhalawar. MP: Six LS seats in action, including Kamal Nath's bastion Six constituents will be in action during the first phase of the four phases for the Lok Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh. The constituencies include Shahdol, Mandla, Jabalpur, Balaghat, Chhindwara, and Sidhi, covering 13 districts and 27 assembly segments. A total of 88 candidates are in the fray, with Jabalpur having the highest number at 19 and Shahdol the lowest at 10. The total number of registered voters across the six constituencies is 1,13,09,636, with arrangements made for shelter, water, and medical assistance at polling booths due to the hot weather. In the 2019 elections, the BJP secured 28 out of 29 Lok Sabha seats, while the Congress won only one seat in Chhindwara, held by Nakul Nath, the son of former Chief Minister Kamal Nath. The second, third and fourth phases of the elections will take place on April 26, May 7 and May 13. Kamal Nath fighting lone battle to help son win Chhindwara and protect home turf Over 75 lakh voters to decide four seats in Bihar In Bihar, the stage is set for the first phase more than 75 lakh voters will decide the fate of 38 candidates standing in four constituencies: Nawada, Aurangabad, Gaya and Jamui. Tight security arrangements are in place at Nawada and Aurangabad, besides reserved seats in Gaya and Jamui, where a majority of nearly 5,000 polling booths have been marked as sensitive, given these districts' long history of naxal violence. Nawada, with 20.06 lakh voters, sees a tough battle primarily between the BJP's Vivek Thakur and the RJD's Shravan Kushwaha, with Independent candidate Binod Yadav adding complexity. Gaya, with 18.18 lakh voters, witnesses 14 candidates, including former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi, an NDA ally, and RJD's Kumar Sarvajeet. Jamui, with 19.07 lakh voters, features a showdown between Arun Bharti from Chirag Paswan's LJP (Ram Vilas) and RJD's Archana Ravidas. The party's president Chirag Paswan, whose sister is married to Bharti, has shifted base to Hajipur after having represented the seat for two consecutive terms. Aurangabad, with over 18 lakh voters, sees BJP's Sushil Kumar Singh facing RJD's Abhay Kushwaha. 76.01 lakh voters, including 36.38 lakh females and 255 belonging to the third gender, are expected to cast their votes. Uttarakhand: Can BJP 'three-peat' clean sweep? Uttarakhand's all five Lok Sabha seats go into polling in phase one, with the BJP aiming to retain the seats for the third time and the Congress looking to regain lost ground in the state. The five seats going to polls on Friday are Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar and the lone reserved seat of Almora. The BJP won all five seats in Uttarakhand in the 2014 and 2019 general elections. More than 83 lakh voters will decide the fate of 55 candidates in the fray. Sitting BJP MPs Ajay Bhatt, Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah and Ajay Tamta have been fielded by the party from Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar, Tehri Garhwal and Almora, respectively. The BJP has replaced its candidates in Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal. Former chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat is contesting in place of Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank from Haridwar and Anil Baluni in place of Tirath Singh Rawat from Pauri Garhwal. The Congress has fielded former PCC president Ganesh Godiyal from Pauri Garhwal, former chief minister Harish Rawat's son Virendra Rawat from Haridwar, Jot Singh Gunsola from Tehri Garhwal, Prakash Joshi from Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar and Pradeep Tamta from Almora. Candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and relatively smaller outfits and independents are also in the fray, but straight contests are likely between traditional rivalsthe BJP and Congressin all the seats. Experts say that Haridwar's demography, which has substantial minority and Dalit votes, may also not be a cakewalk for the BJP's Trivendra Rawat, despite his advantage over his rival in terms of experience, as Congress veteran Harish Rawat, who had won the seat in 2009, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure his son's victory from the seat. If the Modi factor works again as it did in 2014 and 2019, overriding all other factors, the BJP will obviously reap the benefits but if unemployment, inflation, continued migration from the hills and performance of BJP MPs over the past 10 years outweigh the national issues, the Congress will gain, political analyst Jaisingh Rawat said. Bengal: Triangular tussle between TMC, BJP and Cong-Left In the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, all attention is on Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduars constituencies in north Bengal. A total of 56,26,108 voters are eligible to vote in 5,814 booths in this phase. Coochbehar, where Union Minister Nisith Pramanik faces TMC's Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, remains significant due to past violence and political rivalries. The deployment of central forces is higher in Coochbehar compared to the other two constituencies. Both BJP and TMC have intensified their campaigns, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee addressing rallies. Key issues include corruption allegations against ruling party leaders, denial of central funds, and the 2021 Sitalkuchi firing incident. The BJP won all three constituencies in the 2019 general elections and maintained its grip in Coochbehar and Alipurduars in the 2021 assembly polls. But, the TMC had the upper hand in Jalpaiguri in the 2021 assembly polls, winning five and the saffron party managed to win two. The Left Front and Congress are contesting together, having secured only single-digit vote shares in 2019. The BJP has renominated Jayanta Roy in Jalpaiguri and Pramanik in Cooch Behar, but replaced last time's winner John Barla with the party's Madarihat MLA Manoj Tigga in Alipurduars. The TMC has, however, changed candidates in all three seats, fielding Prakash Chik Baraik in Alipurduars, Nirmal Chandra Roy in Jalpaiguri and Sitai MLA Basunia in Coochbehar. Direct, triangular contests in Assam's five LS seats Assam gears up for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in five constituencies, with 35 candidates vying for victory, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal . The electorate of 86,47,869, comprising 43,64,859 women and 42,82,887 male voters, will cast their votes in 10,001 polling booths under tight security with 60 companies of security forces deployed. The BJP is contesting in all five seats, the Congress in four and supporting the Assam Jatiya Parishad contestant in one, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in two and the All India Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) in one seat each. A direct contest is on the cards between the BJP and Congress in Jorhat, Kaziranga and Lakhimpur, while in Dibrugarh and Sonitpur, there is likely to be a triangular fight among the ruling party, Congress, AJP and AAP. The prestigious Dibrugarh constituency has three candidates in fray: BJP's Sonowal, a Rajya Sabha MP, pitted against the United Opposition Forum, Assam (UOFA) candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi of the AJP and AAP's Manoj Dhanowar. In Jorhat, four candidates are in contention, with Lok Sabha's Deputy Leader of the Opposition Gaurav Gogoi locked in a direct contest with sitting BJP MP Topon Gogoi. Gogoi had to shift his constituency to Jorhat from Kaliabor, which has been renamed Kaziranga following a delimitation exercise in the state last year. In Kaziranga, BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa is locked in a direct contest with former Congress MLA Roselina Tirkey, with both candidates belonging to the tea workers' community. Kaziranga has the highest number of 11 candidates in the fray. In Sonitpur, also renamed from the earlier Tezpur after delimitation, there are eight nominees, with a triangular contest likely between BJP MLA Ranjit Dutta, Congress candidate Prem Lal Ganju and AAP's Rishiraj Kaundinya. Lakhimpur has nine contestants, prominent among them being sitting BJP MP Pradan Baruah and Uday Shankar Hazarika of the Congress. Two LS seats in strife-torn Manipur go to polls Manipur gears up for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections amid tight security measures, particularly in the wake of recent ethnic violence. The Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat, which comprises 32 of the 60 assembly segments in the state, and 15 assembly segments of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat will go to polls in the first phase on Friday. Six candidates, including state Education Minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh of the BJP and Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of the Congress, are in the fray for the Inner Manipur seat. Outer Manipur, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes, will witness a four-cornered contest between Naga People's Front's K Timothy Zimik, Congress' Alfred Kanngam Arthur and independent candidates Kho John and Alyson Abonmai, with all the candidates being Nagas. A total of 9.91 lakh voters are eligible in Inner Manipur and over 10.22 lakh voters in Outer Manipur. Special arrangements have been made for people displaced due to ethnic strife, with special polling stations set up. The campaigning has been subdued due to the prevailing tensions, and security has been heightened with the deployment of central armed police forces, especially in vulnerable and critical polling stations. Polling personnel have been dispatched to their respective stations, with special provisions for internally displaced people. The election authorities have ensured gender diversity in the management of polling stations, with some stations being exclusively manned by women. Despite the challenges posed by the recent unrest, efforts are underway to conduct the elections in a free, fair, and peaceful manner. Tripura and Nagaland In Tripura, the first phase of Lok Sabha polls will see voting for the Tripura West Parliamentary constituency and a by-poll in the Ramnagar Assembly. The main contest in Tripura West is between the BJP's Biplab Kumar Deb and state Congress president Asish Kumar Saha. With 14.61 lakh eligible voters, including 7.33 lakh males and 7.28 lakh females, the constituency has 1682 polling booths. Central paramilitary forces will secure all booths, with webcasting from each. In the Ramnagar Assembly by-election, BJP's Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumer faces former CPI(M) MLA Ratan Das, with 54,669 electors deciding their fate. In Nagaland, over 13.25 lakh voters will decide the fate of three candidates. Congress nominee S Supongmeren Jamir, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) candidate Chumben Murry and Independent Hayithung Tungoe Lotha are contesting the elections. BJP President J P Nadda, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, and Deputy Chief Ministers T R Zeliang and Y Patton addressed several rallies in support of their candidate. Polling will run from 7 am to 4 pm, with 13,25,383 eligible voters, including 19,999 first-time voters and 6,707 people with disabilities. Female voters slightly outnumber male voters. In 2019, NDPP's Tokheho Yepthomi won against Congress's K L Chishi. J-K: Udhampur LC seat in action amid ceasefire The Udhampur seat in Jammu and Kashmir will go to polls on Friday in the first phase of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. In view of the ongoing ceasefire between India and Pakistan and the heavy deployment of paramilitary forces, the voting process is expected to be peaceful in 2,637 polling stations in the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, a senior election official said. Union Minister Jitendra Singh is eyeing a third consecutive term in the constituency after winning the seat for BJP in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, facing a major challenge from Congress candidate Choudhary Lal Singh, who had also won the seat twice in 2004 and 2009. Democratic Progressive Azad Party's (DPAP) candidate G M Saroori, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Amit Kumar and six independents will also be contesting the elections from the Udhampur constituency. According to officials, there are 16,23,195 eligible voters. Among them, 845,283 are men, 777,899 are women and 13 are third-gender voters. There are a total of 84,468 potential first-time voters, aged 1819, of whom 45,825 are men, 38,641 are women and two are third genders, the officials said. Lone Puducherry segment all set for three-way fight The fate of the 26 candidates in fray for the Lok Sabha polls will be sealed on Friday when voters spread across four regions will pick the lone MP from this union territory, where the fight is largely confined between the ruling BJP and Congress. BJP leader and Home Minister A Namassivayam, fielded on behalf of the AINRC-BJP combine, will face off Congress MP and PCC president V Vaithilingam, while AIADMK's G Tamizhvendhan is also testing his luck as a debutant. The Union Territory has a total of 10,23,699 voters spread over Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions. Andaman's lone seat in action The lone seat in Andaman and Nicobar Islands will see 3.15 lakh voters get an opportunity to exercise their franchise. A total of 12 candidates, including two women and five independents, are in the fray for the polls. Of the 3.15 lakh voters, 1.64 lakh are men and 1.51 lakh are women, while there are four third-gender voters. The electorate also includes 39 voters from the Great Nicobarese tribe of the Strait Islands, 68 members of the Onge tribe at Hut Bay and 98 members of the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar Island. Special polling stations have been established for them. This time, the saffron party has nominated Bishnu Pada Ray as its candidate, while the Congress has fielded its sitting MP, Kuldeep Rai Sharma. Ray was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1999, when he defeated Congress candidate Sharma by 2,990 votes. He was re-elected in 2009 and again in 2014. In the 2019 elections, however, Sharma secured a victory against BJP's Vishal Jolly (Ray was denied a ticket) by a narrow margin of 1,407 votes.
